UNDERSTANDING THE MESSAGE OF THE PROPHETS “OBADIAH, PRIDE GOETH BEFORE A FALL”
the book of obadiah is a prophecy against edom (esau), “the vision of obadiah. thus saith the lord God concerning edom; …” (obadiah v1). Judgment was pronounced against edom, at least in part, due to her pride, “the pride of thy heart hath deceived thee, …; that saith in his heart, who shall bring me down to the ground? though thou exalt thyself as the eagle, and though thou set thy nest among the stars, thence will i bring thee down, saith the lord” (obadiah v3-4). God rules in the kingdoms of men, “this matter is by the decree of the watchers, and the demand by the word of the holy ones: to the intent that the living may know that the most high ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will, and sitteth up over it the basest of men” (Daniel 4:17). edom, like nebuchadnezzar above, was about to learn this lesson the hard way. Many nations and individuals of today are just like edom and nebuchadnezzar of yesteryear. they believe that men and kingdoms can overthrow and change the council and will of God. But, just like edom and nebuchadnezzar, they will find that those who walk in pride God is able to abase, “But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble” (James 5:16). and to the nations he says, “righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people” (Proverbs 14:34). Since nations do not have souls, like individuals, God holds them accountable for their actions in the here and now. God once said to his own people (Judah), “shall i not visit for these things? saith the lord: shall not my soul be averaged on such a nation as this?” (Jeremiah 5:29). Jesus pointed out that righteousness is the preservative of the earth. But, when the preservative is no longer effective, it too is to be cast away, “ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men” (Matthew 5:13). this principle is seen in the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, “and he said, oh let not the lord be angry, and i will speak yet but this once: Peradventure ten shall be found there. and he said, i will not destroy it for ten’s sake” (Genesis 18:32). if ten righteous people had been found in Sodom and Gomorrah, it may have still been standing to day. When true Christianity perishes in any nation, including america, that nation is doomed for destruction. edom had exalted herself against God and his People. For this, edom would now be cut off forever, “and thy mighty men, o teman, shall be dismayed, to the end that every one of the mount of esau may be cut off by slaughter” (obadiah v9). When will the individuals and nations of the world learn, “Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall” (Proverbs 16:18)? Grizzlies pick up 1st Region 16 win MOBERLY, Mo. – The Missouri State UniversityWest Plains Grizzly Basketball team finally picked up its first Region 16 win of the season against the Moberly Area Community College Greyhounds in Moberly, and they did it in dramatic style.
With the game knotted at 64-64 and just two seconds left on the clock, freshman guard Juwan Green grabbed the rebound of his own missed layup and put up the winning shot as time expired, giving the Grizzlies a 66-64 win in region play. And, to end the game, we needed someone to make a play, and Juwan did just that.” The Grizzlies got the last-bucket opportunity after causing a turnover with 22 seconds left to play. A quick time out
allowed Walker and the players to set up the plan of attack for the shot, and it was Green’s aggressiveness that allowed him to grab his missed shot and try again, the coach said. “I was proud of our rebounding,” he said. “Moberly usually gets 13 offensive rebounds a game, but we held them under 10. We didn’t shoot a bad percentage in the first half, but we turned the ball over eight times. We got that corrected in the second half by only committing three.” Overall, the Grizzlies hit 27 of 56 shots from the field for 48.2 percent, six of 20 attempts from 3-point range for 30 percent and six of 11 attempts from the charity stripe for 54.5 percent. They also had 31 rebounds, 16 assists, 11 turnovers and six steals for the game. Leading scorers were freshman forward Mike Parks, Jr., with 13 points, Green and freshman guard Vonny Irvin with 12 points each, and sophomore forward Ngor Barnaba with 11. The Greyhounds hit 24 of 51 shots from the field for 47.1 percent, four of 16 3-point attempts for 25 percent and 12 of 16 free throw attempts for 75 percent. They also had 29 rebounds, five assists, 14 turnovers and four steals. Leading scorers were

They will travel to MCCAC foe St. Louis Community College on Feb. 3 then return to Joe Paul Evans Arena at the West Plains Civic Center to host College of Faith from West Memphis, Arkansas, on Feb. 6, Region 16 rival State Fair Community College of Sedalia Feb. 9, Faith Preparatory Academy from West Memphis, Arkansas on Feb. 15, and Moberly on Feb. 19. The team’s sophomores will be honored at the Feb. 19 game. The Grizzlies will host a diaper drive for the Diaper Resource Center at the Feb. 15 game, university officials said. Those who bring a package of diapers to the game will receive free admission, they explained.
