UNDERSTANDING THE MESSAGE OF THE PROPHETS “OBADIAH, STANDING ON THE OTHER SIDE”
“For thy violence against thy brother Jacob shame shall cover thee, and thou shalt be cut off for ever. in the day that thou standest on the other side, in the day that the strangers carried captive his forces, and foreigners entered into his gates, and cast lots upon Jerusalem, even thou wast as one of them” (obadiah v10-11). Jacob and esau were brothers, “and when her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb. and the first came out red, all over like an hairy garment; and they called his name esau. and after that came his brother out, … and his name was called Jacob: …” (Genesis 25:24-26). however, when Jacob’s enemies entered into the gates of Jerusalem to spoil the city, esau was as one of them, he stood on the other side (obadiah v10-11, see above). Because of the violence and mistreatment of his brother, esau would now face his own demise (obadiah v10, see above). is there not a lesson in this for all of us? We are our brother’s keeper. When Cain rose up against abel, his brother, and killed him, God asked, “… Where is abel thy brother? and he said, i know not: am i my brothers keeper” (Genesis 4:9)? Cain was condemned by God for failure to act in love toward his brother, “For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another. not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. and wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother’s righteous” (1st John 3:11-12). Cain had an obligation to love his brother and thus to help him in his time of need. John again penned, “if a man say, i love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? and this commandment have we from him, that he who loveth God love his brother also” (1st John 4:20-21). We are to help our brethren in their time of need and/or calamity. abraham is an example of a loving brother. When the herdmen of abram’s and lot’s cattle began to strive with one another over pasture and water for their master’s cattle, abram said, “and abram said unto lot, let there be no strife, i pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen; for we be brethren” (Genesis 13:8). John wrote to the early church, :hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. But whoso hath this world’s good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him” (1st John 3:16-17). Perhaps Paul summed it up best when he said, “owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law” (romans 13:8), and, “love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law” (romans 13:10). By helping others to plunder and kill his brother’s offspring, esau had acted as a servant of Satan and not of God. For this, he would meet his doom. Craig Payne, Associate Profession, Extension Veterinary Medicine, will speak on the Veterinary Feed Directive, Rules and Regulations going into effect January, 2017. Mark Kennedy, Kennedy Grassland Services, LLC, will discuss Summer Pasture Management, forages for summer grazing, ways to manage heat stress.
