WOMEN ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE AT OZARKS MEDICAL CENTER’S CANCER TREATMENT CENTER And not to say that the men aren’t important, too, but the staff of this department is predominately women. They are a closeknit family who experience a wide-range of emotions on a daily basis. Not everyone is cut out for this type of work. But these women truly love what they do. They love their patients and the families that they get to know so well during treatment. And through their compassion, knowledge, and hope for all those who visit the Cancer Treatment Center, the lives that they touch are truly blessed.

Pictured are some of the staff members of the Cancer Treatment Center. Front row: Christy Chambers; Susan Kenslow, FNP; Carrie Malone-Johnson; Dr. Makarian; and Angie Garner. Back row: Kristy Kassing, Brandi Davidson, Catrina Tune, Tina Hansen, Iva Highfill, and Dwanella Snethern.

RUBY RUSSELL, RN A few years ago, Ruby Russell, RN at OMC’s Cancer Treatment Center, saw the need to celebrate. Maybe it was a patient’s birthday or anniversary, their last chemo treatment, or the yearly anniversary of their remission. Either way, one really needs a cake or it isn’t much of a Jennifer Bailey and Ruby Russell show some of celebration. So Ruby be- the cakes that are stocked for celebrations. gan running to the OMC Cafeteria to get a cake for these special events. And the more they celebrated, the more they saw cause for celebration until she just decided to bake these cakes herself. Today, Ruby and coworker Lori Cole bake cakes. They do this on their own time and with their own money. Strawberry, spice, red velvet, pineapple upside-down, devil’s food, walnut, are waiting in the freezer in the employee break room at OMC’s Cancer Treatment Center. “All the staff loves celebrating these milestones with our patients. Baking the cakes at home and always having one ready for a special occasion just seemed like the thing to do,” Ruby commented. She remembers one of her patients who absolutely loved her coconut cake. “Seemed like he always got a coconut cake, just about on every visit. He has since passed away. I saw his wife not too long ago and gave her a hug. I asked her if she needed a coconut cake for old time’s sake. And she said she sure did.”

DR. LIANA MAKARIAN When Dr. Liana Makarian, oncologist at Ozarks Medical Center, moved to West Plains four years ago with her husband and two children, she had experienced the emotions and hope of working in a national cancer center. But it wasn’t until she became a part of our tight-knit community that she fully felt the type of love and hope that West Plains has to offer. Focusing on quality of life during treatment is a passion of Dr. Makarian’s. “I want my patients to continue living their lives as normally as possible while they are getting treatment.” She truly cares about each and every one of her patients. When asked if she had one special story to share, she said, “Not just one. It is every day. I have millions of special stories. Every day has so many special stories. There are always tears of joy and tears of sadness.” She is honored to work with such an exceptional staff. “There really is a lot of love here. We treat everyone the same. We always give the best quality of care, the best standard of care to everyone.” Dr. Makarian pointed out that the prevalence of cancer is as high as cardiovascular disease. “Cancer is a silent killer. If you don’t look for it or do other things to prevent it, the inevitable can happen.” She explained that the medical community is getting better with diagnosis, treatment, and prevention, but there is still a ways to go. “We need more education. Women need to make sure to have the tests that are suggested: mammograms, pap smears, and monthly breast self-exams. They also need to have their daughters get the HPV vaccine.”

Pictured are some of the staff members of the Cancer Treatment Center. Front row: Ruby Russell, Ashley Romans, and Jennifer Bailey. Back row: Jeanette Ell, Tracy Riley, and Lori Cole

Facing Challenges with a smile There are many challenges in any business... anyone who has been to Jackie’s in the East Towne Village lately, probably noticed a challenge of a different kind for store manager Jackie Kimbrough. Day to day operations are something Jackie knows well. The challenge for the last nine months has been managing a business while expecting her second child. Ordering, inventory, cleaning, and presenting are Jackie’s top priorities while juggling doctor’s appointments, attending parenting classes, church, and her 13-year-old daughter’s schedule would be enough to turn any regular person into a stressed out mess. Not Jackie. She just keeps moving right along with a

smile on her face. Did you know Jackie also does catering? Corporate Christmas parties, end of year events, as well as New Year parties. There are lots of reasons to buy gifts or have a well catered event. On April 5, little John announced his arrival. His mom, dad, and big sister could not be more proud of the 6 lb, 13.5 oz bouncing baby boy. Make sure to stop by Jackie’s Gifts in the East Towne Village and congratulate Jackie. Go ahead and pick up a little something for you or a loved one while you’re there. You may also get a chance to meet young John.

Owners Kelley Edwards and Shelly Menz, also sisters, have lived and raised their families in the West Plains area for the past 20 years. As a local, family-run business we pride ourselves on reaching out to our friends and customers to really understand the type of items they hope to see at Uptown Boutique.

Family owned business is all about family

It’s very possible Karen Thibodeaux’s voice is the one you’ll hear when you call Pipe Plus Inc., located on Hwy 63, south of Willow Springs. It’s all but guaranteed that if a pretty lady greets you when you walk in the business, it’s her as well. Monday – Friday Did you notice a Texas 8:00am – 4:30pm drawl in that friendly voice? Well, if so, it belongs there, since Karen was born and raised in southeast Texas. Karen has been married to Gaylon Thibodeaux for 39 years and they moved to Missouri in 1991. Karen says she loves living in the Ozarks and has enjoyed making it her home. They have one son, Rod, who works in the family business and also one granddaughter, Natalie, who’s ten. The Thibodeaux’s opened Pipe Plus Inc. 17 years ago and they carry everything you might need in steel. They do custom fabrication; just tell them your project and they’ll give you a quote. Since November 2014 they’ve had a pipe mill. They manufacture their own pipe so customers can now buy direct. They are in the process now of bringing the mill to Howell County, MO. Karen works every day at Pipe Plus Inc., and when she isn’t busy talking about grain bins, field rollers, combo feeders, or many other products they build, she’s very involved in the Thibodeaux’s Cattle Ranch (Cow/Calf operation). That sounds like a full plate for anybody, but Karen’s interests don’t end there. She’s also very active in the Thibodeaux’s hunting resort. Yep, that’s right, a hunting resort! Ask Karen about it. When she’s not busy at Pipe Plus, Inc., or with the cattle ranch, or with the hunting resort, what does Karen do in her spare time? Karen loves the outdoors, loves to paint, and loves to cook. Karen says that family is very important to her and they all work together in the family business. Spending time with them outside of business responsibilities is also very important. “I feel very lucky to live in the best part of the world and to live among such wonderful Ozarks people!” Anyone who gets to know Karen Thibodeaux will soon see that we’re pretty lucky to have her living among us. She, Gaylon, and Rod, work hard to make Pipe Plus, Inc. successful and they treat people the way they want to be treated. Call the folks at Pipe Plus Inc. at 417-469-5292 or visit them at 3676 U.S. Hwy 63 just south of Willow Springs, MO. Or just stop in and say, “Howdy.”
