Ozarks Black Gold Walnut Festival Alton, Missouri

The 30th Annual Ozarks Black Gold Walnut Festival held in Alton, Missouri on the square will be here Saturday, October 3, 2015. Friday night, October 2, will be the Run for the Gold, the “kickoff ” for the weekend’s events. The run begins at 5:30pm on the square and ends on the square. This is a 5K run/walk for all ages. Saturday’s events will begin with booth setups to be from 7am to 9am, then an official day beginning with a flag ceremony by the Boy Scouts at 9am. Pumpkin carving contest will start at 10am for fun. So work on your best design for that special pumpkin. This will be held on the courthouse lawn. There will be music entertainment for the whole day. Local talent will be performing as well as the elementary choir. Get in touch with Debbie Sallings at 417-270-1651 for special times. We will have many vendors and food booths. There will also be demonstrations at certain craft booths. Come join the fun. Prizes for the Best Decorated Booth Contest, Baking Contest and Woodworking Contest. The Alton Chamber of Commerce sponsored a contest in the 1980s to name the festival and Jane McGibney won the contest with the name of Ozarks Black Gold Walnut Festival. Thank you, Mrs. Jane McGibney. Don’t forget to purchase your walnuts at the following merchants: Alton Florist, Brad’s Barber Shop, Simpson’s Hardware, and Young’s Feed Store. 20 YEARS OF AUTO REPAIR Mike Mayfield, owner and proprietor of Mayfield Auto Repair, never saw himself owning a business. Mike learned the tricks of the trade from his dad and always had an interest in cars, as his father was a mechanic for the City of West Plains, while he grew up. At the age of 17, Mike started working at O’Reilly Auto Parts. Shortly after starting at O’Reilly’s he decided to put his mechanical knowledge to use and got a second job for some extra money. Mike was hired at a local import shop owned by Justin Stanfield. Three years later Mike decided that he wanted to be his own boss. In December of 1994, he opened his own shop, Mayfield Auto Repair. Mike had help from his younger sister, Valerie, working as Mike’s secretary. After graduating, Valerie moved on and the position was filled by his soon-to-be wife Lora, a former coworker from O’Reilly Auto Parts. Mike and Lora were wed that September. Lora

has ran the office throughout their entire business journey. Family Owned and Operated Since 1995, Mayfield Auto Repair is celebrating 20 years of foreign and domestic repair, customer service, quality certified auto repair, proper, preventive maintenance and worry-free nationwide warranties on most repairs. They offer: service work, tune-ups, engine work, brakes, alignments, exhaust work, welding and fabrication. Along with Mike and Lora, they employ five other employees. They say “employees are like family.” Good technicians are hard to find, because of the ever changing technology and interest change, so keeping the ones you have is important.
