My legs still bear the scars of running into chairs…and tables…and chests…and beds, that were not where they were the day before. My mind operates under the assumption that once a room is arranged, to where everything functions as it should, it stays in its place until the house burns down, or you die. But, this year, things were different. About a month ago, Judy decided that the living room furniture, that we’ve owned for the last 30 years, and has been rearranged 30 times, was outdated and needed to be replaced. Carefully, she took pictures of each item and placed them on one of those internet sales sites, thinking it would be weeks before it all sold, giving her plenty of time to select and special-order her dream furniture. Surprisingly, all the old furniture sold within the first week, before she even had time to order the new stuff. After I helped the new owners load their two trucks with the last of our old living room set, I walked back into a completely bare room, except for the television hanging on the wall, and very calmly and lovingly asked my wife,

t’s the dawn of not only a new year, but a new decade. What will 2020 hold for us? Hopefully more ups than downs. This year marks a milestone for me – my 50th Julie Turner-Crawford birthday. As a child, I predicted my life to be is a native of Dallas much different by the time I hit 50 than what it is now. Julie, call 1-866-532-1960 In 1966, Time magazine predicted, “machines or by email at editor@ will be producing so much that everyone in the ozarksfn.com. U.S. will, in effect, be independently wealthy.” The average non-working family could expect to earn an average salary of between $30,000 and $40,000. In today’s economy, that would be about $300,000. In 1957, Popular Mechanics predicted every road in America would be replaced with a network of “pneumatic tubes” and cars would only need enough power to drive to the nearest tube. In 1951, the same publication predicted we would all have at least one helicopter in the garage. Transportation would not be the only change we would see in 2020, according to some scholars. In a lecture at the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1911, surgeon Richard Clement Lucas predicted outer toes would be used less and less, and “man might become a one-toed race.” — Continued on Next Page

just a thought Across the Fence Continued from Previous Page Futurist and computer scientist Ray Kurzweil wrote in his 2005 book The Singularity Is Near: When Humans Transcend Biology that by the 2020s, there will be “nanobots” capable of entering the bloodstream to “feed” cells and extract waste, making food consumption obsolete. Thank goodness that prediction has not come true. Nanobot fried chicken just doesn’t sound too appetizing. We may laugh at some of the predictions for 2020 from long ago, but not all are far-fetched. In 1913, Gustav Bischoff, former president of the American Meat Packers Association, predicted humans’ diets would consist of mostly vegetables as the years went on because of a shortage of meat. There’s no shortage of meat in the U.S. today, thankfully, but inaccurate information is presented to consumers about animal-based foods being “unhealthy,” prompting some to skip out on meat, dairy and poultry products. Then there’s the animal-rights movement scaring folks away from animal products with allegations of animal cruelty. Other predictions regarding agriculture are coming to fruition, including advanced technology, the mainstream

Life Is Simple Continued from Page 3 “Where the !@#$ do you suggest I sit for the next two months?” As I’ve said many times, I am a creature of habit and sameness, who has his whole life disrupted by even minor changes (I may have a little obsessive-compulsive disorder). This change was not minor, and with the prospect of having my sanctuary unusable for quite some time, I thought about moving into my machinery shed. Actually, I didn’t think of that, as much as my wife suggested it. “Don’t get so worked up,” she consoled. “It’ll be fine when you come back this evening.” When I returned from an afternoon of feeding cattle and fixing fence, I walked in through the back door, as always, DECEMBER 23, 2019

production of hemp, a growing farmto-plate movement and increased food safety, just to name a few. We’re also going to see some not-so promising changes. There will be more stumping for “fake meat,” to draw more consumers away from animal products. There’s going to be a continued decline of farms in some production areas, especially dairy operations. The coming years may be difficult for some producers, however, there will always be a need for farmers and ranchers to feed the world. According to the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, the world population is expected to boom to 9.8 billion in 2050 and 11.2 billion in 2100. This means food production is going to need to increase dramatically in the coming years, meaning there will be a need for more farmers and increased agricultural technology because nothing can replace food or the American farmer or rancher – nothing.

winding my way through the hallway and kitchen, before entering what used to be our living room, dreading the inevitable rise in my blood pressure. To my astonishment, there were two lawn chairs and a foldable, chaise lounge, strategically placed to view the TV. On a little makeshift table, between the furniture my wife had moved in from the patio, were my swimming trunks, sunglasses and one of those cute little drinks topped with a tiny umbrella. Playing on the big-screen was a DVD of a white, sandy beach, complete with gentle waves lapping toward me. Judy had also reset the furnace level in the house to broil, causing me to sweat to the point that I could almost imagine sitting on a sun-soaked beach. My mind, relieved of the worry about a place to sit, immediately turned to… I need to order more propane.

To paraphrase the old John Denver song, Carl Huff’s version would be: “Country roads, take me home To the place I belong — Douglas County, in Missouri, Take me home, country roads.” Carl grew up on the original 40 acres owned by his parents, southwest of Ava, Mo. His dad expanded that acreage to total 375, which Carl bought them in 1972. Carl had, in the interim, attended high school and at School of the Ozarks and parlayed his success in the construction industry in Kansas City, Mo., into the possible finances to purchase this property, as well as some owned by his grandmother since the late 1800s. Lettuce, spinach, carrots and beets rebound in the December sunshine in Polk County just outside Bolivar, Mo., at The Salad Farm, operated by Ronald and Sonya Antonini. Beginning seven years ago when they came from Venezuela literally “with the clothes on their backs” as Ronald put it, they have built a farm that produces lettuce and other vegetables, eight months of the year, September through June. While not the time or place, one would expect to find such a treasure trove of greenery, the Antoninis raise their bounty in six high tunnels, free-standing walk-in plastic-covered modern greenhouses, all concentrated on one acre of intensive gardening. Both were born in the U.S., Ronald in Michigan and Sonya in New Mexico, but their families immigrated to Venezuela when they were children. While visiting relatives for two months several years ago, they made the decision Ronald and Sonya Antonini provide fresh to stay in the U.S. and came produce to the Bolivar, Mo., public school to the Bolivar area, to be near system and to other customers year round. other family members. “We use all organic practices and never use any poisons or pesticides,” Sorows, freshly overturned, were benya explained as she and her ing readied for the planting of husband opened the doors to new seeds. During other parts of Bolivar, Mo. their high tunnels to reveal a the season, they also raise torainbow of green and red letmatoes, peppers, eggplants, tuce varieties, as well as the redand a wide variety of other topped greens of beets. Other colorful vegetables. DECEMBER 23, 2019

meet your neighbors “Here, we grow eight months of the year, September through June,” Ronald explained. Their unusual growing season is the opposite of other Ozarks farmers and gardeners. “Come June, July and August, it is way too hot in the high tunnels. We can only work in them in the early morning in the summertime or late in the evening. Otherwise, it is too hot and of course, too hot for much of the produce. In Venezuela, it is a tropical environment in which we could work all year, so we had to learn how to adapt to the different seasons here. Of course, the worst is January and February when it gets down to 10 to 15 degrees. We have heaters in a couple of the tunnels but it is not enough to really keep them warm, just enough to go against the worst of the cold. Sometimes, we just have to let things hibernate until March.” In Venezuela, Ron also grew produce but not on the intensive scale the family does now. He was primarily a beekeeper with 80 hives and also raised sugar cane. The African bees he kept there produced a large amount of honey but are also known to be highly aggressive and require a full beekeeper suit, sealing out all contact with the bees for the safety of the beekeeper. “I haven’t done much with bee hives here,” Ron continued. “I just don’t have the time with all the vegetables. “The honey you have here in Missouri has a wonderful flavor though,” Sonya added. To help their gardens grow and their business boom, the Antoninis have applied for and received Missouri ValueAdded Farm-to-Table grants. “The MASBDA Farm-to-Table Grant program through NRCS was a true blessing from God, helping us to get started, Ronald said. “We received our first grant in 2015 or 2016, and then additional ones in 2016 and 2017; and they helped us so much. With those grants, we were able to pay for 75 to 80 percent of the cost of three of the high tunnels. Those grants were a great financial help. Without those, we would not be at the point we are now.” Ronald and Sonya also utilized the MASBDA Value-Added Farm-To-Table Grant Program to build a new facility DECEMBER 23, 2019

with processing equipment and a walkin cooler. This allows them to wash and process all produce indoors and keep foods fresh longer. The Antoninis market their produce to local schools throughout the Bolivar area, at area Farmers’ Markets and to area restaurants. “It was hard doing the marketing in the beginning,” Ron stated. “But once, someone tastes our produce for the first time, they come back and most important, they tell others. These days, we don’t have to do any amount of advertising. We’ve had people arrive here who have serious allergies or sensitivities to sprays and other chemicals and we tell them, try our produce and see what you think. You will not find a problem with those kinds of sensitivities and they tell us it is true. And they come back.” There are few days off for the family. Their operation, like most agricultural ventures, is labor intensive. “Of course, this is a lot of work, seven days a week and many people do not want to work that hard. It is easier to do something else but we like it. When you love what you do, it is not really work,” Ron said. “The best part is that we can see God’s hand, God’s energy in all that we do. It is our dream and we offer our part, but without God’s help, it would come to nothing. The next best part is that this is a family operation. We work together, with our sons, Obed (12) and Lawrence (11). They help and we see each other at our table every day. Time spent with the family is priceless. And then, of course, working with nature, putting the vegetables on our own table, we know exactly what we are eating and we know we are doing something good for our community. “And on the rare occasions, when we run short of produce and we cannot fill all the orders, I can tell you, we first fill the needs of the schools because the children always come first on our priority list.”

Three Museums in One

By Juanita McLellan

Fort Leonard Wood’s John B. Mahaffey Museum aids in the training of soldiers Located at 14296 South Dakota Ave., Building 1607 on the grounds of Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., the John B. Mahaffey Museum houses three museums in more than 23,000 square feet of gallery space. Dedicated to preserving the history of the Engineer, Chemical Corps and Military Police, the artifacts of the Army Museum were compiled over many years, from many locations. The United States Army has been preserving its history since 1824, when Congress asked the Army to keep records of its accomplishments. Some artifacts date from the 1700s. “If you think of the Army’s history like a pizza; what the Army does, is they take that history and slice it up by the branches; infantry, artillery, engineering, administrative, or units like 1st

10

Cavalry Division or 82nd Airborne Division,” Engineering Museum Director Troy Morgan said. “And then the individual museums across the Army laser focus on their slice.” The result is many different museums located on different bases across the country, all telling a slightly different chapter of the Army’s history. Part of the job of the John B. Mahaffey Museum is to train soldiers on the history of the different branches of the Army, and in the process, help them to become better soldiers. Troy pointed to the museum’s history, which is passed down to each soldier as playing a part in making our Army strong. “You have made a commitment that you are going to put the freedom and values of this nation above your personal needs and desires,” he said. “What army museums do

is, we record those personal stories, and share them with the next generation.” Particularly striking are the life size displays of soldiers in combat situations, authentic enough to require a second look. The Engineering Museum moved from Fort Belvoir, Va., in 1989, where it was established in 1954. Troy has worked at the Engineering Museum for 10 years. “My favorite parts are training soldiers, and meeting veterans,” he said. “Most people who come here are really happy, so it’s easy to go home with a smile on your face.” The Army Corps of Engineers are responsible for building bridges, digging tunnels, building runways for aircraft, and every aspect of making sure soldiers can engage the enemy in combat, despite any rugged terrain they may encounter. The Chemical Corps Museum was es-

tablished after the World War 1 Armistice and was originally housed at the Gas Defense Plant on Long Island, NY. The Chemical Corps Museum records the various stages in the development and use of chemical weapons, from World War I to the present, including gas masks. There is a “Micky Mouse” gas mask, which was an attempt to make the idea of chemical warfare not so scary for children. Kip Lindberg has been director of the U.S. Army Chemical Corps Museum since 2008. “Without a doubt, the best part of working at the Chemical Corps Museum is having the privilege of interpreting our branch’s 101-year history to our soldiers and the American public,” he said. “Every chemical corps soldier undergoing training at Fort Leonard Wood gets a block of instruction on their branch history, and DECEMBER 23, 2019

ozarks roots ‘our museum in their classroom.’ Then on graduation day, we get to see these fine men and women proudly giving their family a tour of their museum.” The Military Police Museum is dedicated to tracing the history of the military police from the 1700s to the present. The Military Police Corps Museum officially began at the Provost Marshal General Center at Fort Gordon, before moving to Fort Leonard Wood where it opened in September 2000. The professional Military Police Corps had its beginnings in France during World War I, but the organization was officially formed in September 1941. They played an important role in the Cold War, as M.P.’s began Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin in August of 1961 and continued to man that service until it closed in June 1990. The Military Police Corps also won honors when serving in Vietnam during the Tet Offensive of 1968, when it was upgraded to a higher level of responsibility for the Army. James Rogers has been the director of the Military Police Museum since March 2003. “I most prefer conducting historical research regarding the design, development, use and interpretation (either for public exhibit or written articles) of the artifacts in our collection,” he said. “Also searching for appropriate artifact additions that we may be lacking to support the museum story line,” he added. The John B. Mahaffey Museum at Fort Leonard Wood remains a popular attraction, with half a million visitors each year, including soldiers from other countries. The future of the museum is bright, though change in on the way. “All three museums here at FLW are in the beginning process of consolidation of administrative and operational functions that are intended to allow the branch director/curators more emphasis on artifact curation and research,” James Rogers said. The museum is open to the general public. Visitors from outside the base must stop at the main gate, where their I.D. is checked. A valid driver’s license, or some other form of official identification is required.

Jake Jacobson

We Also Have Utility, Cargo, Dump, Equipment Trailers & More In Stock!

By Laura L. Valenti

Hometown: Bolivar, Mo. Family: Wife, Sandy; sons, Jake and Bo; and daughter Samantha (Sam) In Town: Jake Jacobson was raised in northwest Montana and has operated his own fencing company in Polk County, outside Bolivar, Mo., since 2006. “I started doing all kinds of fencing but these days, I do agricultural fencing, barbed wire and woven wire. Trying to do privacy fences in town, for instance, you end up with folks wanting to fight over six inches of dirt,” he added with a smile, robbing his words of any offense. “There is something to that old saying, ‘good fences make good neighbors.’” In the Country: “We keep commercial cattle and we’ve had up to 20 cow/ calf pairs although we don’t have that many right now. My wife was raised on a farm and has worked the cows with me in the past. “I also keep a couple of ranch horses. On my days off, I work with another friend and we do some cowboying on the big operations, working cattle, rounding them up, and doctoring them. It’s a good way to help make it financially because as everyone knows, these days you’ve got to be diversified,” he said. “The best part of what I do, with the fencing or the cattle, is that at the end of the day, I can see what I’ve done. You can’t say that in every job but it’s what I like about what I do.” Jake’s approach to his work is honest and amiable, truly that of a cowboy who finds himself in cyber space, caught in a near time warp in the 21st century. “I’m looking to get through life without a computer,” he added. “I work for a lot of good people. I have good customers and that makes this work a lot easier.” DECEMBER 23, 2019

There is not much in the way of new news in the hay world this week. A lack of winter weather has most of the cattle guys getting along okay and no one is really looking for hay at the moment. There has been very few inquires from sellers or buyers in the last couple weeks. The supply of hay is moderate to heavy, demand is light to moderate and prices are steady. The Missouri Department of Agriculture has a hay directory available for both buyers and sellers. To be listed, or to view the directory visit http://mda.mo.gov/abd/ haydirectory/ for listings of hay http://agebb.missouri.edu/ haylst/ (All prices f.o.b. and per ton unless specified and on most recent reported sales. Cheese: Barrels closed at $1.6950 and 40# blocks at $1.7975. The weekly average for barrels is $1.8690 (-.3795) and blocks, $1.8965 (-.0630). Fluid Milk: Farm milk output is variant, in some cases from one farm to the next. The 30,000 foot view would suggest it is increasing weekto-week, but lower year-to-year on a number of farms nationwide. All that said, there is plentiful milk in most processing facilities in the country. Bottlers have cut orders, in some cases, in the midst of the fall/winter holiday season. Cheese producers continue to report Class to sub-$2 discounts on spot milk loads. Cream supplies are not as variant as raw milk, as they are generally abundant from coast to coast. Butter makers are churning hard. While Class II and Class III cream usage is still busy in some areas, some producers are allotting some extra time off this holiday season. F.O.B. cream multiples are 1.18-1.30 in the East, 1.14-1.28 in the Midwest, and 1.01-1.22 in the West. SPOT PRICES OF CLASS II CREAM: $ PER POUND BUTTERFAT, F.O.B., producing plants, Midwestern U.S. - $2.4000 - $2.4774.

Through EQIP, the Bairds received reimbursement for a significant portion of costs to install a rotational grazing system. In addition, agency experts assisted Sam and Danni with planning, installing and modifying their system. “The people are the best resource. The different practices and programs give us an excuse to be involved with those people on a very regular basis,” Sam said. The Bairds attribute their success to the advice and expertise of the NRCS, Greene County SWCD and MU Extension employees who continue to guide the Bairds every step of the way. “We get a lot of support and encouragement knowing we have someone to call with questions,” Danni said. Sam added, “We would have tried it (rotational grazing) but we would not have been successful without them.” It took the Bairds three years to get DECEMBER 23, 2019

meet your neighbors LOOKING FOR FREELANCE WRITERS rotational grazing practices up and running on their farm. They setup the system on a 110-acre area, dividing their pastures into paddocks that range in size from 4 1/2 to 13 acres. They manage 30 momma cows that are either a registered Braunvieh or an Angus-based commercial cow. Sam recently analyzed and compared the stocking rates of their farm, Baird Braunvieh. First, he took a look at his stocking rates from five years ago. Based on his records, he calculated that during that year, which he considered an average grazing season, 7 1/2 acres supported one cow. He then reviewed his records from last year, which was a year fraught with drought. This time, due to the Bairds’ established management intensive grazing system, 5 acres supported one cow. “We saw a 50 percent increase in production. That is how you buy 50 acres for $500 an acre,” Sam commented. For the most part, the Bairds rely on the manure from their cattle as a natural fertilizer for their fields. “We typically let the animals do the work,” Sam explained. But after last year’s drought they decided to spread nitrogen on some of their pastures to promote growth. Another benefit of their rotational grazing system is needing less hay. Historically, the Bairds feed hay December through March. However, the bountiful rain this year has produced lush fields, giving the Bairds hopes of feeding hay for only three months instead of the typical four months. Each year, Sam and Danni make at least one significant improvement to their operation. Four years ago, they worked to establish warm season grasses in two of their paddocks. But they soon found out that planting big bluestem can cause a farmer to get a bit anxious. As they had on past pasture improveDECEMBER 23, 2019

ments, the couple turned once again to the aide of Mark Green, lead resource conservationist at the USDA – NRCS. The bluestem grasses eventually emerged. Now, the Bairds enjoy the benefits of fastgrowing summer grass when the fescue slows down. Their success with the EQIP program motivated the Bairds to seek out other opportunities to partner with NRCS and Greene County SWCD. In addition to utilizing EQIP for their rotational grazing system, the Bairds tapped into EQIP for assistance with forest management on their farm. In addition, Sam and Danni got involved with the Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP), through NRCS. Through CSP, the Bairds built fence around a pond, planted trees near their house and barn area, planted red clover into a fescue-based hayfield and installed an inground water tank. Now they are working with the agencies through an agroforestry program to provide their cattle additional shade. “When you start dividing these paddocks up into smaller areas, in the hot summer we not only have to give them access to water, we also have to give them access to shade,” Sam explained. In the next couple of years, the Bairds plan to plant 400 trees in the middle of their fields. The Bairds operate their farm with sustainability in mind. Their rotational grazing practices naturally improve the quality of the soil and grass in their fields. Sam and Danni share their successes and failures with other farmers wanting to implement similar operations. They host fieldtrips for farmers attending grazing school, open their fields for high school agriculture grass competitions, and willingly share anything they have learned to anyone who asks.

Creating a Strategic Plan By Jessica Allan

M

y employer, Guaranty Bank, recently held its bank-wide strategic plan Jessica Allan is an agricultural lender meetings in which they rolled out and commercial new goals for the next few years. I relationship manager appreciate these meetings not only at Guaranty Bank in because they loop all employees in – not just manNeosho, Mo. A resident agement – but they also reinforce that reaching our of Jasper County, she is goals is a team effort. The achievement of those goals also involved in raising and the overall success of the company is affected by cattle on her family’s everyone, from branch bankers to lenders to back offarm in Newton County fice operations, even board members. and is an active alum At the meeting, the chairman of the board of the Crowder Colquoted NBA legend Michael Jordan: “You have lege Aggie Club. She to expect things of yourself before you can do may be reached at them.” The point he was making is that you will jallan@gbankmo.com. do whatever it is that you set out to do. Your mindset determines the achievement of any goal just as much, if not more, than any amount of work or money you throw at that goal. I completely agree and it’s why I think it’s so important for my customers to have a strategy for goal achievement, whether they have 10 goats or 1,000 cows. Just like the strategic plans put into place by the banks I have worked for, these plans need to be specific and measurable. This makes it much easier to attain that goal, so instead of setting something vague be specific: Growing the herd by 20 percent through heifer retention by 2025 versus getting more cows. Put simply, what gets measured gets done. Part of any goal achievement strategy is making a contingency plan for when something goes wrong, an all-too-common occurrence in agriculture where so much depends on fickle weather patterns. Whether it’s crops or cattle, you are going to be affected by weather, supply and demand, prices, global economies and who knows what else. What is your plan for keeping up with operating costs and bank payments in those tough years? A savings account? An off-farm job? Diversifying your operation? Insurance? What happens if you get sick, hurt or, heaven forbid, die? Disability insurance? Life insurance? Hire extra hands? My point is that establishing a strategy and contingency plans well before you want to achieve your goal can help ensure your success. Not only does it provide you with specific targets, but it can keep your mind engaged. You must keep the mindset that the goal you set can be achieved. If you set a goal of owning 600 acres, but know you will be OK if you only have 300, then chances are you’ll settle for that 300 acres or perhaps less. If you think you can or you can’t, you are right. Our mind is a powerful tool that is often left neglected in our toolbox. The most important key to any operation is you. You are the one that endures the failures, large and small, and celebrates the victories. You are in the day-to-day management of your operation, slogging it out in the mud and heat, and basking in the relief of a job well done. You, and the team you surround yourself with, will make your dreams a reality, but only if you determine that they will, in fact, happen.

Making farming a little easier

Benefits of Participation By Klaire Howerton

Working with local, state and federal agencies can help producers improve their farm There is an almost endless array of farm programs, many of which are offered through the USDA and the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS), for a producer to apply for. With options ranging from crop insurance to high tunnel initiatives to grazing schools to conservation and energy initiatives, the process of selecting a program can be a little overwhelming. A producer will want to make sure their time and energy are well invested in a program that will make a difference for them, and many folks ask the question ‘what can these programs actually DO for me?’ Fortunately, the answers are pretty beneficial. Farm programs can: Extend the Growing Season: Many produce farmers and small homesteaders apply for the Seasonal High Tunnel Initiative. This initiative is geared towards helping growers who raise produce for commercial or educational purposes extend their growing season in an environmentally friendly manner. “There is more environmental benefit by allowing them to grow longer,” USDA/ NRCS Assistant State Conservationist for

what do you say? What program or incentive has been the most beneficial to you and your operation?

DECEMBER 23, 2019

Field Operations Curt McDaniel said. He explained better soil health, increased organic matter, better nutrient cycling, and taking advantage of the sunlight are all benefits of using a high tunnel. Curtis Millsap, a grower from Springfield, Mo., who received a High Tunnel grant from the NRCS and produces vegetables year-round with nothing but solar heat. “I think that is a great thing for the environment,” he said. Put Up Fence: Building fence for rotational grazing can be an expensive undertaking, but farm programs can help. Michael and Amy Billings of Buffalo Lodge worked with their local NRCS team to design and partially fund a rotational grazing system for their herd of bison. Michael and Amy first began working with NRCS in 2011, when they had a herd of 25 bison and 80 acres. To more effectively utilize the forage on their farm, Amy and Michael acquired another 105 acres, and they utilized NRCS and local soil and water conservation district assistance to install crossfencing, a livestock water-distribution system, tire tanks and pasture seeding, including conversion of some acres to native warm-season forages. They can

now support up to 100 bison that rotate through 17 paddocks on 185 acres. Build Barns: Another Ozarks producer, Polk County, Mo., dairy farmer Nelson Hostetler, put up a new dairy shed and animal waste system with design and financial assistance from the USDA NRCS. He originally contacted the NRCS about a manure lagoon, but his local service center employees helped him expand on that idea. With his new set up, his cows are producing 20 pounds more milk per head, per day. Pollinate: David Panahi, of Fair Grove, Mo., utilized the assistance from NRCS’ Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP) and Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) to provide plenty of resources for his beehives. According to the NRCS, Panahi’s pollinators are surrounded by fields of wildflowers, shrubs, red maples and fruit trees including pears, peaches, apples and even heat-loving figs. The native plants, Witchazel, Aromatic Asters and Goldenrod, were established with assistance from NRCS and designed to have continuous bloom periods throughout the growing season that enhance honey production and pollination activity.

Reduce Erosion: Gary Harral, a farmer in Benton County, Ark., reached out to his USDA NCRS branch to rectify losing a foot of pasture a year along a 2,400-foot section of the Anderson Branch of the Little Osage Creek to erosion. His program of choice was the Illinois River Sub-Basin and Eucha-Spavinaw Lake Watershed Initiative Project (IRWI) – a voluntary program that provides financial and technical assistance to agricultural producers for addressing water quality concerns in Northwestern Arkansas and Northeastern Oklahoma. “Gary’s project consisted of bank shaping and protection by pulling the creek bank back on a 2:1 slope, installing a rip-rap toe in the streambed and placing geotextile and rock rip-rap on the shaped banks up to the normal bank,” Josh Fortenberry, NRCS soil conservationist at the Bentonville Field Service Center, explained. Today, erosion on Gary’s farm is drastically reduced. These are just a handful of success stories from folks who have participated in farm programs. Stopping in at the local USDA/ NRCS Service Center, visiting www.usda. gov and following state specific USDA and NRCS social media pages can help producers get inspired and begin implementing some of these programs on their own land.

“The Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQUIP) provided internal fencing and a livestock watering system that enabled management intensive grazing. That was a game changer.”

“The grazing schools really do so much for people, like wells, electric fencing, fix up stream banks and show you how to fix up a stream or river crossing so cows can’t get under it. It’s just a good program.”

“I’m a fan of EQUIP (Environmental Quality Incentives Program) because it’s all encompassing. Typically a water system is the most expensive thing to install and EQUIP has good costshare rates.”

“We installed water lines and water through EQUIP and we found that cost-share program very helpful. We have done some other projects on our own, but we are hoping to do more with EQUIP.”

Busting the Myths By Klaire Howerton

Some of the most common misconceptions regarding farm programs and incentives With the popularity of social media, misconceptions about agriculture run rampant these days. It can be difficult to tell fact from fiction, even for producers in their own industry. One topic within the field of agriculture that has its own share of myths is participation in federal farm programs. Federally funded programs are “farmer welfare” While many farm programs and subsidies offered though the Farm Bill can aid a producer in a time of need, they are not intended to be “farmer welfare.” Government programs are essentially a form of insurance. Most people insure their homes, cars, health, businesses, etc. Why shouldn’t a farmer insure his or her business against unpredictable weather, invasive pests, disease, drought or flooding? Risk mitigation through participation in one of the USDA’s programs can provide protection and peace of mind to producers. According to the USDA, some of their most popular risk management programs include: the Agriculture Risk Coverage and Price Loss Coverage programs (protects farm revenue from changes in market conditions and provides a safety net to farmers and ranchers when there is a substantial drop in revenue or prices for covered commodities), the Dairy Margin Coverage Program (replaces the Margin Protection Program for Dairy and offers protection to dairy producers when the difference between the all-milk price and the average feed cost (the margin) falls below a certain dollar amount selected by the producer, Federal Crop Insurance (offers hundreds of different insurance products – product offerings include coverage for production loss, revenue loss, and price decline. The insurance covers row crops, livestock, specialty crops, organics, dairy, grazing land and more) and the Noninsured Crop Disaster Assistance Program (provides financial assistance to producers of certain eligible crops for which catastrophic risk protection plan of insur-

ance is not available when low yields, loss of inventory, or prevented planting occur due to an eligible cause of loss). Producers Have No Control Another common myth when it comes to farm programs is that once a producer is approved to participate, the government “takes over” a farm. The USDA and Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) Service Center employees are all about building relationships with the farmers and landowners they serve. “We always encourage people to stop in and visit,” Curt McDaniel, USDA/ NRCS Assistant State Conservationist for Field Operations, said. “We want to give people the best experience we can, and it starts with a conversation.” Once producers have selected a program, applied and been approved, they can utilize an online portal called the Conservation Client Gateway. This tool allows producers to request technical assistance, apply for financial assistance, view, sign and submit applications and other documents, and track payments. “Big” Farmers Get Preference When it comes to programs like those offered through the NRCS Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP), applications that have been submitted are reviewed to determine which requested projects will have the largest positive impact on the environment. McDaniel said these programs and initiatives are aimed at producers who have environmental needs with livestock, landscape and headquarters, and are not necessarily related to the amount of acreage, number of animals, etc. Farm programs can be incredibly beneficial to producers, despite the myths that surround them. Visiting a local USDA/NRCS Service Center or going online to www.usda.gov can help further dispel misconceptions and inspire producers to apply. DECEMBER 23, 2019

Performance is in the pail When your grass lacks, MFA has your supplemental solutions. Our new Performance First Horse Mineral Pail with Shield provides horses with essential nutrients for digestive health and performance. It combines MFA’s Shield Technology with biotin to naturally boost immunity and aid in hoof health and integrity. The convenient, reusable 25-lb. pail is perfect for hanging on a gate or fence. Also check out MFA’s new Performance First AllStock supplement, a 50-lb. tub designed to deliver nutrients to all classes of livestock. There’s no added copper, so this tub is safe for sheep.

When forages alone aren’t enough, MFA supplements produce results. Now available at your MFA Agri Services or AGChoice location. Ash Grove - 417-751-2433
