Although the concept of urbanization seems to be related to the act of relocating the population due to its ontology, along with it, it demands a social, economic, cultural and political change. It is inevitable that change will affect the knowledge of architectural design and the field of research. “Need for public space”, which is one of the still up-to-date discussion topics, especially It needs new perspectives and demands the right to social actions that develop in the city of Istanbul. Pendik Kurtköy, which cares about taking into account all the disadvantaged groups of the citizens, the Library and Yuvam Istanbul Social Center, they consider the needs of all urban components and attach first priority to participatories. Social networks are constantly evolving, all kinds of information are available on the internet. In this new era, people can establish a healthy physical connection. There is an increasing need for social areas where one can exchange information and communicate. Apart from the social aspect, what library represents today is also symbolic and political. The residents of the city, who are the users of Yuvamız Istanbul Day Care Center, which is another main program element, are children and education personnel. Childhood is a special period with its own unique needs and characteristics. The ability of children to find the “optimal development” mentioned in various national and international conventions and documents should be perceived as a responsibility not only for schools and educators, but also for local governments and architects by providing child-friendly cities and spaces. The highest possible (optimal) development is possible with happy-guaranteed play and learning-based experiences that include liberating, fun, exploratory learning processes that support the development of children rather than limit them.

While Pür-Zemin transforms the required open space, which is determined in the building criteria of the area, into an urban floor, it also aims to relate to the public floors in the urban environment. It creates a new theme for the city center it is in.

It was aimed for PürZemin to establish a special relationship with young individuals who are users of the educational buildings located on Lise Street and its periphery, and ways to make access to information and socialization enjoyable and participatory were

sought. In this context, creating lecture halls and circulations that support the library’s internal and external activities has been very important, and it has been very important to create the new generation social environment of the library.

The morphology and tectonics of Pür-Zemin also define the distinction between the Children’s Day Care Center and the Library. It also brings an interpretation to the coexistence of public-private space. While undertaking the production of open spaces for the library, it undertakes a role that surrounds, shelters and makes the children’s spaces special in the Day Nursing Home. In addition, a qualified outdoor space by reflecting the contextual dynamism of the interior to the outside. It is aimed to create perception and representation. According to the researches, the places that today’s library users use to access the document, the places they spend time (group rooms, quiet room, cafeteria, multi-purpose hall, workshop, etc.) covers a very small area compared to the spaces. In this context, these alternative uses to the Pür Zemin center and other social activities that may appeal to everyone. takes activities (talking, meeting, eating and drinking, exchanging information, sitting, lying, watching, etc.). It offers the right of access to the city and its ground to the citizens. It is possible to reach Pür Zemin from inside the building, from Lise Street, Onur Street, and from the front area of ​​ the Mosque by stairs, amphitheater and elevators. Program Placement Decisions The area is surrounded by the active streets Lise Street and Onur Street on the North and Southwest perimeter. The use of public space of these two arteries was given priority, and access to the library structure was prioritized, and the perception and use of both the library structure and the Mosque were provided separately from the city junction formed at their intersection. The library structure has established a relationship by taking the entrance from the front area of the mosque and feeding the area through the street library program. The Multi-Purpose Hall, which is also an element of the Library structure that will frequently contact the citizens, is built on the ground and lower ground floors close to these entrances. The proposal carries the users inside and outside the new level building to the upper levels and the social spaces that open to it, +4.00 and +8.00. Library functions are connected to the large terraces and this new public floor.

TALAS PUBLIC PARK + CULTURAL CENTER BAĞ-BAHÇE: urban vıneyard nation’s garden

Design Approach The vineyard house creates a spatial background for the whole of the sociocultural actions in the life of the citizens of Kayseri. In the transformation of the area into a national garden, the “wall” element that creates the interior-exterior, closed-open distinction has been reinterpreted. The “wall” that defines the borders is a transitive structure, becomes spatial, turns into a green landscape, and forms a national garden by blending with local viticulture and horticulture activities. The idea of the wall was reinterpreted by conveying the masses to the periphery. The examples of the vineyard-garden tradition were examined in the land that formed the walls and was shaped by the walls, and the area was divided into zones for different applications. Activity units have been established in the area divided into zones such as the Activity and Movement Slope, Game Getneries, Vineyards and Orchards, Vineyard Grounds, Spotted Forest, so that the urban people can integrate into viticulture activities and turn it into a part of daily life. The floor designs that divide the area into parts, the universities in the direction of the slope to the land, the Hoca Ahmet Yesevi Street on the side of the housing block and the educational buildings, the Talas Bağları Mahallesi and the Ulus Street, which is on the side of Ali Mountain and merges with Ali Saip Paşa Street, and the water element plays a leading role in the design. The water element shows seasonal changes in function. The water, which exists as running water in the summer, freezes in winter, allowing winter activities.

BAĞ-BAHÇE: urban vıneyard nation’s garden

Landscape Approach In the landscape design, the water element formed the main backbone by considering the topography of the land and the existing tree texture, and while other functions were designed to support this, continuity, sustainability and fluency in spatial transitions were taken into consideration. A sustainable, low-emission landscape area is targeted with groundcovers and dwarf shrubs to be used on sloping areas. Transportation and Circulation The street between Hacı Bektaş Veli Park and Millet Bahçesi was closed to traffic and pedestrian movement continuity was ensured. To contact with Ali Saip Paşa Street, which has already been pedestrianized, new pedestrian and bicycle paths have been proposed. To strengthen the relation between pedestrian crossings and the residential blocks located on the side of Hoca Ahmet Yesevi Street, a picnic area, multi-purpose hall, service services (toilet, buffet, safety room) have been added to that part of the Nation’s Garden. The intersection of Halef Hoca Street and Hoca Ahmet Yesevi Street gradually descends towards the Nation’s Garden and forms a small square.

The walls that draw borders are considered as uniting elements, not separating them in the project. For this reason, the concept of “wall” has become open to interpretation. It has a structure that transforms into spaces that allow leaks, like a filter at the entrance, around the area.

Education area has been expanded to increase the organic transitivity towards the public garden. There will be a wall as a border between the Nation’s Garden and the schools, and there is a gate that provides control. Programs such as viticulture archive, library, jam ateliers,

greengrocer, cafe, multi-purpose hall, food and beverage places, amphitheater, pocket cinemas, meeting-debate units, observation hill, sports activity areas form the walls on the periphery. In addition, the watchtowers from the military are used as watchtowers.

The proposed project starts with exploring and understanding abstract repetitions in order to read spatial memory in Bursa Çarşıbaşı UNESCO World Heritage Site through intervals. He looks at the temporal intervals that can be observed in daily life at the scale of the city, in the street texture, in the bridge, in the garden, in the commercial structure, in the courtyard of the inn, in the organization of the façade, in the silk loom, from a historical perspective. In the field, intervals that work linearly, intervals that are created periodically and disappear over time, intervals formed by coincidences, shortcuts and destructions are intertwined. It shows that the interval in Çarşıbaşı is shaped by the themes that connect to each other and the differences between them. In order for this unique quality to be the basic principle of the design approach, the project proposes a monolithic, fluid, connecting and multiplying, intertwined and separate, but above all, a ‘contemporary’ range for the space now.

Architectural Design Approach: balance of using and conservation. new uses have been proposed in the area in addition to reconstruction, preservation of spatial memory and partial preservation of the fiction coming from the adjacent order.

Landscape Design Approach: reading the city as a landscape. The project seeks the means of Bursa as a landscape, through the ecological and urban intervals it has activated by taking the city’s unique topography as a reference.

PlantDesign Strategy: spontaneous landscape texture. As a reflection of the discussions on sustainability and climate change, spontaneous vegetation guides urban landscape strategies as a creative and sustainable plant design approach.

The proposed design offers a continuity that will not interrupt pedestrian movements. It allows the creation of a fluid landscape and open space setup between Hisar and the Hanlar Region. With this feature, the project area will enable different actions such as walking, exploring, encountering, stopping, resting, watching; and in different time periods (weekdays-weekends, night-days, etc.). The courtyard landscape of rice Han and İpek Han, which is functional with the new program proposals, was supported by the proposal of redbud and linden trees unique to Bursa, which will come to the forefront with their color and odor effects in the seasonal cycle, by preserving the existing trees. The courtyards, where the ground is defined by the structural landscape, are designed in continuity/integrity with the architectural texture and colors (horizontal-vertical) of the Hans surrounding them.

The generator of the spatial fiction in the focal area, the interval-space, is the main reference in the shaping of the voids of Çarşıbaşı that emerged after the expropriation. Interval-space can be interpreted as a hybrid landscape that connects, includes

and produces indoor and outdoor spaces in different programs and scales. The urban instrument of this journey unique to Bursa is the intervals that accompany our every moment. Just as it is necessary to read, look and see without

skipping between the lines, in order to make the invisible visible. In the words of Şems-i Tebrîzî, it is necessary to be in the gap, to look through the gap, to keep the gap in order to perceive the space. The venue is interval in Bursa.

The 45 schools that are considered to be demolished and rebuilt under the program of İSMEP (The Project of Reducing Seismic Risk in Istanbul) are evaluated by Uygur Architects as an important opportunity for modernization of the educational spaces. The design approach that stood against the monotype architectural attitude for educational buildings that continued for a long time in the country, resulted in those 44 schools’ transformation as a way to reaction to create authentic education units. Schools are the first places that the children encounter with public space, therefore hold an important position in their lives. The impressions of the spaces left in our school memories are the main substructures that develop our common environmental conscience that will improve our cities’ livability later. The idea that the students who are treated in well-designed spaces will criticize the other spaces and demand for the better, become an important input during the design process.

Each project was designed with awareness that educational units not only are for students, but also improve the learning desire, environmental conscience and good taste of the residents in city life.

During the two years I worked at Uygur Architects between 2018-2020, I had the opportunity to work in various positions in 18 of these 45 schools. In these 18 projects whose names are listed in the index, I took part in works such

as concept projects, preliminary projects, transportation projects, construction projects, detail drawings and manufacturing drawings at various scales, 3D construction modeling, visualization and presentation.


The main principle is to create flexible spaces like ateliers, to be used comfortably by the youth. One other important criterion is to think that the education will be given in other spaces more than classes. Those spaces are evaluated as free environments that host interactive education, mediate people and support them to teach and learn from each other. Especially to create socially sustainable and energy-saving buildings, the structural

components are designed and constructed without any paint or coating. As a design principle, modesty and simplicity are preferred so that the users can customize the spaces depending on their own choices. The determination of the design principles as flexible and modular created the opportunity for each of the 44 schools to be designed differently and in a qualified way, regarding the changing locations, sites and scales. With these qualifications, the 44 individual

buildings in different scales create their own architectural grammar and prevent from a “monotype building approach” trap. Besides the final products, the design process that is carried out by Uygur Architects, also become a forerunner attitude in architectural atmosphere of Turkey. Despite the differences depending on sites and scales, each school project is individual but has the same design language, following the same principles mentioned above.

ESENLER MENDERES HIGH SCHOOL 45 publıc educatıon buıldıngs wıthın the ıstanbul seısmıc rısk mıtıgatıon and emergency preparedness project (af-ceb-cb1.5a)

Esenler Menderes Anatolian High School is located on a rectangular area of 3100 square meters with a 4 meter level difference between its long sides and a street connection on 3 sides. The location of the area with a public park opposite, determined in the building criteria, required the front of the building and the front garden to face the park. It was aimed to provide diversity from the space in the school gardens by using the level difference in the open area that is required to be left. A conference hall and a gym in accordance with international standards were designed to host social and cultural activities for young individuals who are users of educational buildings. The walls coming out of the school yard due to the level difference were made enjoyable with ramps and amphitheater stairs.

MUSEUMCAMPUS A Music School in ankara sugar factory campus as AN Industrial Heritage conservation and transformatıon

Ankara Sugar Factory Campus is a representative of the city in the social, cultural and economic development since they were founded.That’s why, the campus, the entire structure and all the machinery that could be industrial objects it contains, has a value as an industrial heritage. the best way to preserve specialized industrial heritage region and its structure is museumisation. In the project, it is aimed to create an environment that can be exhibited by protecting the industrial objects and buildings located in the region and which have a monumental value by turning the factory land into an open air museum.

The Sugar Factory is designed as a monumental urban object that represent the idea of social and economical developed of a very new civilization, Turkish Republic.Therefore, the building is transformed a public museum.

The machine factory has large spatial volume in order to produce big machines. The music school is planned to be located in the machine factory because it is the first stage of production just like a school for a Campus.

MUSEUMCAMPUS: A Music School in ankara sugar factory campus as AN Industrial Heritage

The Machinery Factory was used by positioning the halls in such a way that there is a material supply axis in the middle, and by positioning the machines close to the walls of the halls during the production of machine parts. These traces within the structure of the venue were also continued in the music school setup. The theoretical classrooms to be found in the music school are located on the periphery facing the courtyard, and the creative spaces of the music school are placed on the other side under the name of performance platforms. Performance platforms were created to seek the spatial diversity of creative production. These spaces needed by the music school are diversified under 4 main headings as benefiting from daylight, being seen from outside, being heard from outside and benefiting from green. The ground level of the machine factory is fictionalised as a public space, remaining true to the Museum-Campus idea. Machine production in the memory of the space is exhibited with the machines on the floor, and music production is exhibited with the performance platforms. In addition, the machines placed at the ground level were transformed with various programs such as a museum shop, cafeteria and library. From the ground level to the upper levels, publicity decreases and privatization increases. The aim of the MuseumCampus project is to transform the Sugar Factory’s industrial landscape with the programs of the Music School and add a new dimension to the continuation of production. In this scenario, industrial objects and structures remaining from the Factory become a part of urban life by being exhibited in the MuseumCampus.

SPACESCOPE OBSERVATORY HOUSES Roccascalegna, Italy

The nocturnal sky is eternal, sublime and inaccessible. When looking at it, the human being experiences the most ancient sensation and feels overwhelmed by an ancient and inviolable mystery. A mystery that not even the most modern and refined minds can understand, despite efforts and technological progress. Dazzled by the brightness of our metropolis, we often forget the extraordinary vision the vault of heaven can offer us. However, there are still places that are far from lights and cities where the beauty of the infinite appears in its entire splendor. Surrounded by forests and crags, Roccascalegna is one of the places where this magic continues to occur and where the sky keeps on telling its eternal and beautiful story. It is a unique and far place that is both incredibly beautiful and clearly fragile. In fact, the fortress deeply depends on the constant care of the human being to preserve its characteristics and remarkable appearance. Looking from a defined gap is a nice way to focus on landscape. Telescope creates a special relation between observer and the sky. The project’s first aim is to set up such a special relation. We researched for an architectural response of a telescope as a symbol of the connection inbetween two walls. The castle has its own picturesque atmosphere. Because of its attitude and altitude, we try to spread the observation over the whole “spacescope.”

It respects existing pathways and buildings. Structure of the walls is provided by u-profilit material which

observatory houses does not damage historical remains. The Pilkington Profilit channel glass wall system consists of self-supporting cast glass channels and an extruded metal perimeter frame. The end result is a wall that obscures vision but allows light to pass through.

The project suggests housing units located on the highest part of the scarp, at the end of the our transition walls. When private parts and public spaces are placed separately, the guests enjoy the beautiful Roccascalegna village view in their rooms.

the wall transformation project of an old military area ın ankara

The urban fabric of the Turkish capital rests on undulating Anatolian steppe colored by yellow parched grass. The in-between of the grid is populated by variousness: residential complexes, houses with gardens, business towers, the slums the parks or sports fields, the city’s monuments, shopping malls. And somewhere mysterious, behind a well-guarded wall. These military areas are well rooted in the fabric of this city, so well that nobody remembers the absence of their ubiquity. And very few know of the life behind these walls. Before these military walls, we are busy with the idea of the subconscious that has built us walls. residential walls, and shopping mall walls, and park walls, and office block walls. And Ankara Kalesi walls.Walls everywhere. Ankara, a city in itself, walled stronger then Jericho. The moment of this cognition led us to think of the notion of transformation. So, we rethink the wall.

This new notion of a wall does not just wall-in and wall-out people, events and spaces. It also walls-within. It inhabits the function. It enables the happenings. Through it we show to the people living in a world of identical unanimous walls, what else can constitute of wall.
