This young Aussie Female featured in the March edition of Fourth Quarter can’t stop winning of course I am talking about Sally Fitzgibbons. Sally Fitzgibbons has taken out the Billabong Women’s Rio Pro over Coco Ho of Hawaii, 21, by a score of 14.10 to 14.03 in peaky one-to-three foot (.5 meter) waves at the primary venue of Rarra da Tijuca. Event No. 5 of 7 on the ASP Women’s World Championship Tour, the Billabong Pro Rio culminated in a thrilling fashion on Monday the 14th of May 2012. With both Fitzgibbons and Ho exchanging the Final’s lead multiple times before the hotter sounded. In need of a high 7-point ride with just minutes remaining in the heat, Fitzgibbons bashed a blowing lefthander on her backside, notching a 7.93 out of 10 to take the elite win, her second of the year. “That was so crazy and Coco (Ho) had me on the ropes for sure,” Fitzgibbons said. “I just had my fingers crossed and knew there would be one towards the end. I made a few mistakes and it happens in finals but I was able to recover there at the end. I’m so excited.” Fitzgibbons, current No. 2 on the ASP Women’s WCT, and has significantly narrowed the gap between her and current ASP frontrunner fellow Aussie Stephanie Gilmore 24, but remained humble in regards to her chase for the 2012 ASP World Title. “This makes the World Title race more interesting, but thinking ahead, it’s still pretty far to go,” Fitzgibbons said. “There are still a couple of events, but to get a win, it’s an amazing result. To win at Bells too, it’s been an awesome year so far.”

Fitzgibbons celebrates her victory

Ho, who was ranked 12th on the ASP Women’s WCT ratings before the Billabong Rio Pro, had yet to advance beyond the Quarterfinals this year, but her Runner-Up finish to Fitzgibbons vaults the young Hawaiian to ninth in the world and restores her confidence to appropriate levels.

The next stop on the 2012 ASP Women’s World Championship Tour is the Roxy Pro Biarritz from July 10-14, 2012.

1.

Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS) 14.10

“This result really opens things up for me,” Ho said. “I’ve been having a really tough year and I’m stoked to get into this Final. This is my best result of the year and this has been an important event for me. Congrats to Sally on her win.”

2.

Coco Ho (HAW) 14.03

Carissa Moore (HAW), 19, last year’s Billabong Rio Pro winner and reigning ASP Women’s World Champion, was edged out of a hard-fought battle against Fitzgibbons in their high-scoring Semi-final affair. Both competitors posted big-scores in the dying seconds of the heat, but it was Fitzgibbons who earned the best of the exchange, handing Moore and equal third place result. “I think we want to make the Final and it’s disappointing, “Moore said. “I’ve lost to Sally (Fitzgibbons) twice this year and I’ve just got to keep trying in the next couple of events and that’s it.”

Billabong Women’s Rio Pro Final Result:

BILLABONG WOMEN’S RIO PRO SEMIFINAL RESULTS: SF 1: Coco Ho (HAW) 14.16 def. Alessa Quizon (HAW) 10.94 SF 2: Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS) 15.47 def. Carissa Moore (HAW) 15.36 CURRENT ASP WOMEN’S WCT TOP 5 (After Billabong Rio Pro): 1. Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) 38,400 pts 2. Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS) 36,900 pts 3. Carissa Moore (HAW) 30,200 pts 4. Courtney Conlogue (USA) 29,600 pts 5. Tyler Wright (AUS) 28,700 pts

Moore, who was dominant over the course of 2011, has yet to find a win in 2012, but remains focused on attaining a strong performance to end out the season. “I think it’s been a bunch of things this year,” Moore said. “I think finding the right waves is one thing overall and I need to switch it up and bring something different out.” Alessa Quizon (HAW), 18, Billabong Rio Pro wildcard, put in an incredible performance at this year’s event, tearing through the world’s best female surfers and finding her way into the Semi-finals. Quizon put up a good fight against fellow Hawaiian Coco Ho, but was ultimately fell during last minute exchange, finishing with a respectable equal 3rd place finish overall. “This has been an amazing event for me,” Quizon said. "I had nothing to lose and it’s been a great learning experience for me and I’m happy that I made it to the Semi-finals. I could tell that Coco (Ho) was getting the scores that she needed and I was looking for one big score and I just didn’t find it. Sometimes it happens that way.” The Billbong Pro is proudly supported by Monster Energy Drink an Xperia Sony Smart Phone. 4

But with clear road to his left, Ferrari made a terrible decision and switched violently to his right. As he did so Cavendish was coming up on the same side, and although the world champ desperately tried to avoid Ferrari’s rear wheel, he had no chance. He hit the deck hard on his left and before you could blink he was sprawling in the middle of the road with the bunch heading straight for him. The resulting melee brought down Phinney, among others, and at first it appeared he may have broken his ankle. Luckily for him the injury turned out not to be as severe as first thought.

The incident was caused by Roberto Ferrari who took out world Champion Mark Cavendish and race leader Taylor Phinney in the final sprint to the line. No one team controlled the sprint after three laps of a 14.5km circuit around Horsens in Denmark, meaning each of the sprinters was left to do his own thing in the final. Goss was the one who positioned himself best coming in to the long, wide final straight.

The crash behind stopped others coming up from the rear, but even before it happened he looked like he had it in the bag. Cavendish came into todays stage as favourite after his dominant performance on Monday , but he lost the wheel of Geriant Thomas with around two and half km’s to go. From there he jumped from wheel to wheel, but had to start his sprint from far back. The riders will fly back to Italy on Monday night, although those caught up in the accident may have to make a pit stop at the hospital first. On Tuesday is the rest day giving the riders affected the chance to recuperate before Wednesday’s team time trial.

Casey Stoner reveals why he quit Moto GP

Two Time World Champion Aussie Repsol Honda Rider Casey Stoner to Hang Up his Helmet for the last time after the 2012 Season.

MAKING my decision to retire from full-time MotoGP racing was a very, very hard thing to do.

I’ve Loved bikes since I was a kid, this is my whole life and if I keep doing it I'm afraid I'm going to lose my passion and not want to go near a bike for the next 10 years, and that would scare me. Many things over time have taken their toll including the direction I see this championship heading. This is not the championship I fell in love with. The rules are changing too much and moving away from prototypes and going the opposite way, towards production-based bikes. It would be really nice to see some fantastic racing again at the front but with only a few factory bikes it is not going to happen any time soon. This decision has been a long time coming, I've thought about it since I was forced to take a break with my lactose intolerance illness, which I still have to manage, when I was at Ducati in 2009. During that holiday I realised there are other things in life and that money isn't everything. Also, that many media reports continue to talk about a mystery illness in 2009 with some people not believing in me or trusting my opinions. I think that I am one of the few riders who can actually say they have retired when they have stopped enjoying it. I had a very nice offer from Honda to renew my contract for 2013 but I don't want to ride and just take the money. And my test day in a V8 Supercar late last year has absolutely nothing to do with my decision to retire from MotoGP. I'm interested to do some car racing in the future and whether I'm fast enough is another question, but it won't be in the near future. Also the birth of my little girl, Alessandra, has nothing to do with this. I've had a great career and some fantastic races and I feel that even after my first championship in 2007 I had reached my goals. It was my dream to become world champion. And I did it again last year with Honda, the team I always wanted to ride for. I'm happy with the career I've had, the wins and battles along the way. I won't have regrets.

winning both races in breathtaking fashion.

Rain hampered the practice sessions on Friday, ominous conditions caused havoc on Saturday and Sunday affecting grip and temperature levels of the track. Weather likely to be the last thing on the minds of HRT and Team Vodafone out to break Ford Performance Racing’s strangle hold start to the season, Tander taking the door off Winterbottom’s car heading to his pole grid position at the start of Race 7. Winterbottom and Tander continuing their battle for the lead as the lights went green. Though, it would end in tears for Tander who was spun around following contact with Reynolds: his car caught fire ending his day. Tander’s spin on the last turn caught Davison and others by surprise: Davison the innocent bystander after van Gisbergen accidentally spun the championship leader to avoid the carnage. Davison, unlike his Holden rival, was able to get his car back out there to accumulate some points, though lost his championship lead to Whincup. Soon after the restart, Moffat was sand-trapped on Lap 7 at Turn 6 causing yet another safety car deployment. At the restart, last year’s winner Jason Bright had a good lead over Whincup and Winterbottom, until Whincup passed him on Lap 14. But, the dark threating clouds had every team peeping outside their garages by this point. Lap 45 and a mysterious misfire from Shane van Gisbergen allowed cars to pass him, but eyes were soon back on the leaders – Winterbottom crossing first for his second-straight win followed by Whincup and Lowndes.

Next day, Davison bounced back for, possibly, the greatest act of racing that has All teams crossed the Nullarbor fresh from New Zealand ever ready to tackle the tyre-eating circuit of Barbagallo in been Western Australia’s capital, and where the weather decidseen ed to be unpredictable giving teams atrocious conditions in a across the weekend. long It was a different format of racing. V8′s Motorsports FPR CLEAN SWEEP, CONTINUE DOMINATION DESPITE CRASH Reynolds had problems with his falcon, but the harshest story of the day went to Ingall. The Supercheap Auto racer was pinged by race control and sent back to the back of the field after his best ever qualifier in a long time, fifth. The Enforcer was not happy and called it a ‘crap penalty’ with many fans agreeing on social media. Taz Douglas had a helping hand off the field and out of the race which resulted in a safety car intervention that saw everyone pitting early. V8 Supercar management came under fire by Roland Dane and Ross Stone after the Safety Car collected the wrong leader resulting in Lowndes and many others being dropped far down the order. This mix-up, however, benefitted many including Davison. Davison swapped his softs for hards and was on the hunt to gain control of the race by quickly overtaking Whincup, who was on harder tyres. Though, the biggest question on everyone’s lips: ‘Can Will Davison manage his tyres properly and win this race?’ Only one person could give us that answer, and he accomplished the impossible! Commentator and former race-car driver Neil Crompton believed that Davison wouldn’t make it, but with the help of another Safety Car, Davison was able to reserve tyres. Patrizi helped to hold off Whincup but tyre degradation enabled Whincup and Winterbottom to pass. Whincup charged and closed the gap, and in the dying stage of the race Winterbottom helped his teammate to hold off Whincup, eventually passing him for second place.

These dying laps of the race must be seen to be believed - a thrilling final race at Perth and another FPR clean sweep. Davison now trails Whincup in the championship standings.

Fa'aoso signs Two-year NRL deal with Manly Manly have signed Newcastle prop Richie Fa'aoso on a two-year deal for the start of the 2013 NRL season. The 28-year-old, who's also spent time with Penrith, Parramatta and Sydney Roosters, said he's honoured to have agreed terms with the premiers. "I'm looking forward to the challenge of establishing myself within such a strong team," he said. Sea Eagles coach Geoff Toovey said Fa'aoso will be a great boost to the Manly forward pack. "Richie will be a strong addition to the team next year and provide some extra depth for us," Toovey said.

Ellis dreading NRL farewell to Tigers Gareth Ellis says he'll leave Wests Tigers at the end of this year with a heavy heart and hopefully wearing a NRL premiership ring. The England international arrived at the Tigers from Leeds with a big reputation in 2009 and has exceeded expectations. His consistent performances won him the Tigers player of the year award three times in as many seasons, cementing his spot as one of the finest back-rowers in the world. The 31-year-old returns to the UK at the end of the year where he'll link up with Super League side Hull FC, who are coached by Tim Sheens' former assistant at the Tigers, Peter Gentle. And although he has no regrets about his decision to move back to Yorkshire, Ellis wants a premiership to take back with him. "That would be the dream ending and the reality is we have the team to do it," Ellis told AAP. "But at the end of the day, I am not going to let that justify whether I have enjoyed my experience here or not. "I've loved every minute of it. Not just the football side of things - living here has been fantastic." Ellis admits he was unsure if he would last in the NRL when he first arrived, but is now dreading the day he has to say farewell to his teammates.

Ellis dreading NRL farewell to Tigers

WOUNDED TIGER: Bloodied back-rower Gareth Ellis carts the ball up in his side's 14-12 victory over Manly in Gosford. Picture: Mark Evans Source: The Courier-Mail I had a lot of apprehension about being an Englishman coming out here and playing in the NRL," he said. "But now I am just another player, one of the boys and part of the club." Ellis and former English greats Ellery Hanley and Gary Schofield were recognised by the Tigers last week at a dinner to commemorate their contribution to the club. And Ellis said being mentioned in the same breath as Hanley and Schofield, who played for Balmain in the 1980s, was a huge thrill. "I am very proud to be associated with that, and very honoured to be in the same company as Gary and Ellery - two greats of the game," he said. Ellis nominates Luke Lewis as one of the toughest players he has faced in the NRL and said he'd love to see the NSW and Australian star take his place in 2013. Lewis has been granted an early release from the final two years of his Penrith contract to seek a new challenge and Ellis said he'd be a perfect fit for the Tigers. "He would be a great acquisition for the club, regardless of who is coming and going," Ellis said. "He is an absolutely brilliant player and, by all accounts, a great bloke off the field as well. He's the full package." Lewis' manager Greg Willett was in hospital coming out of minor surgery when contacted by Fourth Quarter and unable to comment on his client's future plans.

Aussie Samantha Stosur starts her campaign in Madrid

“I thought my level got better and better as the match went on, and the last half of the third set was the best tennis we played. It was really tight, really close. I'm very, very pleased to get through that one.” Sam Stosur

Gabine Muguruza Bianco of Spain, who saved two match points before finally falling 6-2 6-4. Unseeded Mona Barthel won an all-German battle, eliminating 2011 semi-finalist Julia Goerges 6-4 6-1. “This time last year I was ranked around 200 and now I’m close to being seeded,” said Barthel, making her Madrid debut. “It feels strange, but I worked hard for it.

US Open champion Samantha Stosur got off to a winning start at the Madrid Masters on Saturday (6th May 2012), advancing to the “I’m serving well and moving better on the clay and I’m obviously second round with a 7-5 4-6 7-6 (5) defeat of Croatian Petra Martic. benefitting from confidence right now.” “Petra was playing really well, and it really went down to the wire today,” Stosur said after the match. “I thought my level got better and better as the match went on, and the last half of the third set was the best tennis we played. It was really tight, really close. I’m very, very pleased to get through that one.” Next for Stosur is young American Christina McHale. “She’s an upand-coming young player who hits the ball well and is great athlete,” Stosur said. “I will have to be prepared and be on my game. She probably has nothing to lose. “We’ve practiced a few times and I think we’ve played one other time.” That one time was on hard court in Stanford in 2010, a match that stosur won in straight sets. Stosur was joined by Romanian Sorana Cirstea, who upset French seventh seed Marion Bartili 6-7(6) 6-4 6-3. French Open winner Li Na, the eighth seed, also made it through after dominating her opener against teenaged Madrid debutante

Venus Williams, the losing finalist two years ago, was pushed hard by Romanian Simmona Halep before winning 6-1 4-6 7-6 (6), while Spain’s Silivia Soler-Espinosa beat Austrian Tamira Paszek 6-7 (2) 62 6-2. The men begin their competition on Sunday (6/05/2012) with the top eight seeds given a bye. Rafael Nadal, seeded two, will get his first test on the unorthodox and experimental blue clay courts which have drawn the Spaniard’s anger when he plays the winner for the match between Croatian Ivo Karlovic and Russian Nikolay Davydenko on the 6th of May

Wimbledon 2012 has been run and won for another year. For men’s single final it was I guess It was odds on favourite for the Swede Roger Federer to take out the men’s final. Federer met Englishman Andy Murray. The English public hoping for the countryman win but it was not to be. Below is how Roger Federer & Andy Murray reached the Men’s Singles Final.

Roger the record breaker Roger Federer joined the illustrious Pete Sampras/William Renshaw Club when he won the Wimbledon Gentlemen’s Singles title for a record-equalling seventh time. In defeating Andy Murray 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 the Swiss also reclaimed his world No.1 ranking and at aged 30, became the second oldest man to do so behind Andre Agassi. In the Women’s competition it was Serena Williams Against the odds Serena fought back and on Saturday was reunited with the Venus Rosewater dish for a fifth time when she defeated Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 on Centre Court, bringing her Grand Slam singles tally to 14. Venus, who too has endured her own health battles – she was diagnosed with a debilitating auto-immune disease last year – joined her sister on the hallowed turf at 9.30pm for the Ladies’ Doubles final where they secured a 7-5, 6-4 win over Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka to pocket a 13th Grand Slam ladies’ doubles title. And serves up her trump ace card During the third set of her final against Radwanska, Serena delivered 17 aces – four of those served consecutively in one game. By the end of the tournament the American had set a new record of 102 for the Championships.

Welcome to this month’s OZSPORTS U.S. EDITION. In this article we will re-cap the NHL and NBA finals, L.A. Kings broke through for their first Stanley Cup and LeBron broke through for his first ring. With the NFL season still a few months away the media is still focusing on bounty-gate and in baseball news too many ‘no-hitters’ by pitchers means that people are complaining that pitching is getting too easy. Read on and enjoy! NHL After shooting out to a 3-0 lead in the best of seven series against the New Jersey Devils, the L.A. Kings quest for their first NHL Stanley Cup came to an end winning the series four games to two. It took them 45 years but L.A. won the final game with authority, 6 goals to 1. Not only was the 45 years without a title amazing but it’s the first time an eighth-seeded playoff team has won the title. With 17 saves in the final game Jonathan Quick was the finals MVP. He only allowed 7 goals in the 6 finals game, an impressive display and a worthy MVP. The Kings steamrolled everyone in their path after barely making the playoffs, eliminating the top three seeds in the Western Conference in overwhelming fashion as they matched the second-fastest run to a title in modern NHL history. Congrats guys! NBA So LeBron James has finally got the over-sized monkey off his back, after 9 seasons in the NBA the best player in basketball in the past few years has won his first NBA title and received his first ring. Miami Heat was down one game to nil against the Oklahoma City Thunder before steamrolling them by winning the next four games. After having trouble getting into the final LeBron took control and took charge of his team and absolutely smashed OKC who gave little resistance. OKC, a very young team, will look back and rue the game 2, 3 and 4 losses, which were only by a few points but you can rest assured that they will be better for the experience next year. The Miami Heat, carrying the burden of losing last year’s final to the Dallas Mavericks took the hurt they felt from that series and put it all on the line in this series to pull out a win. Now the draft and trading has started and Miami Heat will be trying to keep their championship winning team together. It was funny to hear that if they didn’t win the championship this year the whole team, from the coach down would have been dismantled, it’s amazing what a win does for a team. As of writing this, right now, I have just heard that Boston Celtic, Ray Allen, has signed with Miami Heat for less money than Boston was offering. Once again, a championship changes people’s perspective on things. In other trade news, after playing 8 years with the Phoenix Suns, two time league MVP, Steve Nash, is teaming up with Kobe Bryant and the L.A. Lakers. OTHER SPORTS A quiet old time in the NFL. Bounty-gate has been and gone and now that there is not much to talk about the media is talking about bounty-gate again. The players for the New Orleans Saints are saying that the NFL has no proof that the bounties existed…apart from the fact that the defensive coach who started it all confessed that it did happen. Geez…I can’t wait for the season to start. In baseball news all the talk is about ‘no-hitters’ but before we talk about the problem let’s consult Wikipedia as to what a ‘no-hitter’ is: In baseball, a no-hitter (also known as a no-hit game and colloquially as a no-no) is a game in which a team was not able to record a single hit. Major League Baseball officially defines a no-hitter as a completed game in which a team that batted in at least nine innings recorded no hits. With only 266 ‘no-hitters’ in 150 years of baseball it seems that the media is freaking out over 5 no-hitters in the first half of the 2012 season. Ridiculous suggestions made include moving the pitching mound further back as well as making the pitching mound smaller. Surprisingly no-one is mentioning that the batters (whom some earn $120 million dollars for ten years) should actually try hitting the ball and actually earn that ridiculous amount of money that is paid to them. In NHL news…get ready for another owner lock-out. The players union and owners can’t agree on money issues so we could have a good old fashioned NBA style lock-out within the next few months. That’s all for this month’s instalment folks You can catch my regular column on the Ozsports Website but let’s not forget our weird sports fact of the month: The Major League Baseball teams use about 850,000 balls per season. Melbourne Ice Win Inaugural Trans Tasman Champions League The Melbourne Ice have won the inaugural Trans Tasman Champions League at the Medibank Icehouse, after a heated game versus cross-Tasman challengers, the Botany Swarm. Eventually winning 8-5, the Ice were equal on points and goal differences with the also undefeated Newcastle North Stars, causing the result to be decided by total number of goals scored versus the Swarm. The 8-5 win was bigger the Newcastle’s 6-3 win, generating the Ice the narrowest of victories. Earlier in game four it seemed as if the Ice may be upset by the Swarm, as a big hit by favourite import Matt Armstrong slammed Botany top-scorer Joshua Hay enough the stantion and the end of Swarm Bench. The hit put Hay head first into the unpadded divider and off the ice, bleeding from a cut in the head and suffering concussion that required him to be transported. The hit resulted in Armstrong’s ejection with a major and started off a very emotional and nasty game where the physicality was high and intense. The major gave the Swarm a lead and it took most of the third period for the Ice to run it down and get the necessary two goal lead or an outright win where the scored more than 5 goals. In the end, the Ice did so with a 8-5 win, giving them the same competition points and goals differential as the North Stars, but with the greater total. The Melbourne Ice accepted the brand new cup emblazoned wit the logos of both leagues, and celebrated their win with fans around the rink and at the team watering hole after the game. ___________________________________________________________________________

After a scoreless first half Kieran Govers converted first off a penalty corner drag flick and Des Abbott sent home a field goal moments later. Glenn Turner then scored a sensational goal, nailing a backstick tomahawk, to the crowd's delight, before Russell Ford rounded out the Kookaburras assault on the score board. New Zealand's Nick Wilson scored a consolation goal at the 68 minute mark. Blacksticks Coach Shane McLeod said it was good experinence and showcased how much New Zealand needed to improve to match the top nations in the world.

"I think the scorelines were disappointing, there's nothing that grounds you more than getting a good old fashioned hiding and losing the series three zip is a hiding in my mind," he said.

Kookaburras Clean Sweep over New Zealand

Australia 4 d New Zealand 1 Goals: Kieran Govers(AUS) PC 35m, Des Abbott(AUS) FG 38m, Glenn Turner(AUS) FG 40m, Russell Ford(AUS) FG 44m, Nick Wilson(NZ) FG 68m. The Australian men's hockey team has secured a clean sweep of a three test series against New Zealand, in their last international hit out before the London Olympics, in Cairns tonight. The Blacksticks, ranked seven, never troubled the world number one Kookaburras, who will head to the Games as gold medal favourites.

"I think it takes a while to get used to the tempo Australia play at and we matched that intensity tonight, which is great but you have to do that for 70 minutes. In London if you let your guard down for a moment you are going to pay the price." New Zealand keeper Kyle Ponifex let through four goals but saved just as many and played well in his 150th international match. "It tough you come over here and face the Kookaburras, who are on fire and are getting 5-6 goals a game but you still make lots of saves and we'll learn from that," Pontifex said. McLeod said his charge was coming of age and was beginning to understand the game better as he matured.

Kookaburra's Coach Ric Charlesworth had mixed feelings about the series and asked for more consistency from his players.

"Criteria for doing well in the Olympics means you certainly have to have a keeper of note and he's certainly becoming one of the best keepers in the world," he said.

"I thought it might be closer, in the end 15 goals to three, so it's a pity we didn't have more close games because that would have been better for us," he said.

Tasmanian Eddie Ockenden captained the side tonight and said the series showcased that the Kookaburras 28-man squad was exceptional.

"But you have to deliver consistency and that was what was disappointing about tonight's game, the last 6-7 minutes was appalling and i'm angry about that because it's just sloppy and we can't afford that." The Kookaburras were flat in the opening half and it took a while for the Australians to warm up, where as the Blacksticks played their best 15 minutes of the series. "We weren't good in the first half, we didn't create the quality chances we should have and the last six minutes was shocking and that's sloth, that will cost you if you do that. Charlesworth applauded the effort of those athletes who missed Olympic selection. "Some of the boys who missed out were terrific, their endeavour was good and they're pressing hard for those two extra spots," he said.

29

"We have amazing depth in Australian hockey, we had some guys who didn't make the Olympic team playing and it showed fantastic players have missed out," he said. Five time world player of the year Jamie Dwyer, Matthew Butturini, Liam De Young, Simon Orchard and Matthew Swann all sat out the series injured but will be back on the pitch.

against the Steel on Saturday afternoon before going on to extend their eleven goal quarter-time advantage into an 18-goal victory. The Vixens will now host the major semi-final against the Northern Mystics at Rod Laver Arena, the first time that netball will be played at the multi-purpose venue, with the winner to host the 2012 Grand Final. The Vixens will be joined by the Adelaide Thunderbirds in the 2012 Final Series after they secured the fourth and final playoff berth with a 65-44 victory over the Canterbury Tactix on Sunday afternoon.

Vixens claim minor premiership and double chance

The Melbourne Vixens have claimed the ANZ Championship minor premiership and all important Finals Series double chance with a 56-38 victory over Southern Steel in the final round. The Vixens needed only to win their last game of the season against the Steel to maintain their league leading position at the top of the ladder, ahead of the Northern Mystics on percentage. "It's fantastic, for their championship (ambitions) and their confidence and their opportunity to play at home in front of their home crowd," Vixens coach Julie Hoornweg told the Herald Sun.

Melbourne went on to finish on top of the ladder with ten victories, equally the league’s lowest points tally to win the minor premiership since the Magic achieved the feat in the inaugural season with 20 points. A 17-goal first quarter for the Vixens put them in pole position

Vixens claim minor premiership and double chance continued An impressive first half from the Thunderbirds put the result beyond doubt when a 19-goal second quarter, shooters Carla Borrego and Erin Bell converting every opportunity, extended their 10-goal quarter-time lead to 18-goals by half-time. With a finals spot secured, the Thunderbirds turned to their bench and gave their young players an opportunity to perform in front of a packed Netball SA Stadium, including Leigh Waddington, who made her ANZ Championship debut in the fourth quarter. Despite the fresh faces in attack with Cody Lange and Melissa Rowland, supported by Waddington and Maddy Proud in the mid-court, the Thunderbirds managed to build on their lead by outscoring the Tactix 18-16 in the final quarter to win by 21 goals. The Thunderbirds travel to Hamilton to take on the WBOP Magic in the elimination minor semi-final with the winner to progress to the Preliminary Final where they’ll take on the loser of the major semi-final. The NSW Swifts finished the season in fifth place, two points behind the Thunderbirds, after a heart breaking loss to the Mystics in Auckland. The Mystics came from four-goals down at three-quarter time to snatch a one goal victory in the fourth quarter to deny the Swifts any hope of contesting a third straight ANZ Championship finals series. The defending champions’ hoodoo lives on for another year after the Firebirds had their season prematurely cut short by the WBOP Magic on Monday night to finish the season in sixth, four points off fourth place. The Firebirds would have needed divine intervention to beat the Magic by 21 goals to become the first defending champions in the ANZ Championship history to make finals the year after winning the premiership. Unfortunately a 53-43 loss to the Magic brought the Firebirds’ ANZ Championship regular season to a close while a thrilling two goal victory over the Central Pulse meant that West Coast Fever finished on a high. The Pulse led the Fever at every break though struggled to maintain momentum as the two sides went goal for goal for much of the game. Trailing by a half-dozen goals late in the second half, Fever coach Norma Plummer moved Catherine Cox from goal attack into goal shooter which provided the required spark to turn the game around in favour of the home side. A 12-8 fourth quarter, including nine from Cox, helped the Fever overcome a two-goal three-quarter time deficit to win 40-38 to the delight of the sold-out Challenge Stadium in Perth. Round 14 Results: Melbourne Vixens 56 defeated Southern Steel 38 Adelaide Thunderbirds 65 defeated Canterbury Tactix 44 West Coast Fever 40 defeated Central Pulse 38 Northern Mystics 50 defeated NSW Swifts 49 WBOP Magic 53 defeated Queensland Firebirds 43

Reds draw FK Bunyodkor in ACL Quarter Finals Adelaide United FC will face Uzbek club Buyodkor in the last eight of the 2012 AFC Champions League after the draw took place at AFC House in Kuala Lumpur. The Reds were ironically drawn against the 2011 Uzbek Champions for the two legged Quarter Finals as they attempt to continue their phenomenal run in Asia's premier club competition. The two sides know each other very well having met four times previously in this competition with Adelaide United holding the edge with two wins, one loss and a draw. The Reds winning away and drawing at home in this year's group stage and in 2008 the Reds knocked Bunyodkor out of the competition at the semi-final stage. Adelaide United will be hoping history repeats itself in this years quarter finals. The format for both the Quarter and Semi Finals will be played over two legs, home and away, with the winners decided on aggregate at the end of the two matches.

Adelaide United line up before commencement of a match.

亚洲足球联合会-亚洲冠军联赛 Asian Football Confederation—Asian Champions League

Kuala Lumpur: The official draw for the Knockout Stage of the AFC Champions League 2012 Final saw the honour of hosting the climax of this year’s edition of Asia’s premier Club competition go to the winner of Semi-final Two. The AFC Champions League Final has been decided in a one-off match since 2009 and Korea Republic’s Ulsan Hyundai will be looking to ensure that the most eagerly anticipated match in Asian club football remains in East Asia after the first two editions were held in neutral Tokyo before hosting the final would go to one of the competing teams and determined at the Knockout Stage draw, with Ulsan K-League rivals Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors emerging as hosts of last year’s tournament. Ulsan are aiming to become the fourth successive Korean finalists after last year’s runners-up Jeonbuk, Pohang Steelers and Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma, ACL champions in 2009 and 2010 respectively, but they must first overcome the challenge of experienced continental campaigners Al Hilal from Saudi Arabia. Adelaide United’s appearance in the two-leg 2008 final marked only the second time the ACL decider had been played in the ASEAN Zone after BEC Tero Sasana hosted Al Ain in the secondleg of the inaugural final and contesting this year’s showdown would represent a major feather in the cap for Australian football ahead of their hosting of the 2015 AFC Asian Cup.

However, the Reds’ first hurdle in achieving that objective is another match against familiar foes Bunyodkor, who they played twice in the Group Stage of this year’s competition and twice in the 2008 ACL semi-final, which Adelaide won 3-1 on aggregate to set-up a final with Gamaba Osaka. The first-leg of the AFC Champions League quarter-finals will take place on September 19 with the return fixture on October 2 or 3 while the first-leg of the semis is on October 24 with the second-leg scheduled for a week later.
