“Streets are the dwelling place of the collective. The collective is an eternally wakeful, eternally agitated being that-in the space between the building fronts-lives, experiences, understands, and invents as much as individuals do within the privacy of their own four walls. For this collective, glossy enameled shop signs are a wall decoration as good as, if not better than, an oil painting in the drawing room of a bourgeois; walls wiell their “Post No Bills” are its writing desk, newspaper stands its libraries, mailboxes its bronze busts, benches its bedroom furniture, and the cafe terrace is the balcony from which it looks down on its household. The section of railing where road workers hang their jackets is the vestibule, and the gateway which leads from the row of courtyards out into the open is the long corridor that daunts the bourgeois, being for the courtyards the entry to the chambers of the city. Among these latter, the arcade was the drawing room. More than anywhere else, the street reveals itself in the arcade as the furnished and familiar intelrior of the masses.“ ? *

FOREWORD

This portfolio summarizes my works that I have done during my undergraduate studies and reflects my architectural vision. Throughout my education, I believe that we can offer architectural solutions to the existing problems in the urban spaces which are formed by the interaction between the societies and the cities. In this context, I tried to explore the potentials of this interaction between society and space by trying to create public spaces in my projects. In this book you will find projects designed within this framework. In the hope of pursuing the studies on people, societies, cities and architecture‌ Thank you for taking a look!

EPIC PASSAGE Performance Space Graduation Project / 2018 / Taksim-Istanbul Advisors: Ayşen Ciravoğlu-Zühre Sözeri Yıldırım

The theatre is the oldest branch of art which requires at least two people to make it happen. This reciprocal interaction creates theatre. In theatre, while the one side is watched, the other side is watcher, and the movements of these people create theatre space. Theatre and theatre space have been transformed in terms of cause-effect relationship as sociological, political conditions and diversity of culture throughout history. During the periods from Ancient Greece to present, there have been several type of theatres and theatre spaces which are developed interrelatedly. What is the spatial needs for today’s theatre?

Taksim Square, Atatürk Cultural Center and Gezi Park are urban spaces which provided the substantial actions in political history of Turkey. Within this context, an action space “Epic Theatre” is designed as a continuation of this urban areas. As Hannah Arendt indicates in The Human Condition, theatre separates from all other art disciplines and stays in a societal framework. According to Arendt, theatre stage is an action space, and this action should be among people and plurality is the main requirement of the action. This situation coincides to the political organization that Brecht aims to create with the Epic Theater Theory. Consequently, an Epic Theatre space is designed to make the field of study an action space.

Using Scenarios

Bertolt Brecht defines the epic theatre as theatre of science age. In this definition, Brecht refers to a theatre which examines social science and interpersonal relations in terms of materialist dialectics, and states that theater, which can meet the needs of the age, should be in this scientific way. Brecht played in Italian Stage setting in Berlin Ensemble, because he could not find a stage for the needs of epic theatre. He reflected the “alienation effect which is the primary concept of epic theatre, on actors/ actresses and stage design. On the basis of the science age theatre, performance area is designed with alienation effect. It is planned that the performance area will be designed particularly by the directors according to the needs of performance. Therefore, a flexible stage area has been created by using technology. 30 m*30 m square-shaped performance area fragmentized as 50 cm*50 cm*300 cm grid system. Each grid piece moves horizontally and shapes the space according to the needs. In this way, performance area can be suitable for the plays that are pursuing the epic theatre theory.

Epic Passage is not only a place for people who come to watch a theater, it is also a connection between Taksim where already has many culture and art events and Dolapdere where has many potentials in this subjects. In this way, Epic Passage is not only an action space, but also a reciprocal interaction space.

COLLECTIVE URBAN ART CENTER Cultural Center 7th Project / 2017 / Karaköy-Istanbul Advisor: Faruk Tuncer

The art has been shaped with a fundamental issue ”art for art’s sake or art for society” from past to present. In today’s world, we have encountered with several sociological problems, and art becomes more and more self-enclosed rather than become social. It is one of the most important points to think about. The fact of being closed to public is mostly created by the cultural centers which are designed with introvert structural principles. In this case, the architecture, which is a type of art and also creates places for people’s interaction, needs to take charge in this issue more than before.

The History of Tophane

1453 After the conquest of Istanbul, Tophane-i Amire was built for cannonball production by 2nd Mehmet. 19th 3rd Selim planned a square in Tophane for practice of Ottoman military forces. In 1823, these buildings destroyed by a fire. After that, Tophane square was built with same urban plan by 2nd Mahmut in the damaged area. At the same time, Nusretiye Mosque and neo-classics factories was built, too. Because of the Ottoman Empire’s transition to the regular army, Tophane Barrack, Tophane Watch Tower, Tophane Mansion were built by government of 1st Abdülmecit, today these buildings continue to exist. 1929-1944 As growing of Istanbul, production of cannonball was given up and factories were abandoned in Tophane. In 1929, Henry Ford opened Ford factory in this area; thus, abandoned factories began to work again. Car production had decreased because of the depression era, and in 1934, factory stopped its production. Factory had used the place for storage from 1934 to 1944.

1953 Istanbul harbour was constituted from the merging of Galata dock and Tuesday Bazaar dock. In 1953, Architect Sedad Hakkı Eldem designed Istanbul harbour with merged all of storage buildings and management units.

1956-1986 During the area of Adnan Menderes’ government, factory buildings were destroyed for road-extending works, and entrepots were built in stead of the factories. In 1986, harbour was closed for transportation ships.

Today Nowadays, gentrification studies have been maintained by GalataPort project in Tophane.

20

Karakoy as one of the oldest neighborhood in Istanbul, has a great diversity in culture. In addition, within its cosmopolitan feature Karakoy has also became a trade and manufacture center. When the harbour closed for trade in 1986, Karakoy has lost gradually its commercial feature. However, Karakoy has been transforming with the gentrification projects, today. The main reason of gentrification is to make the port an attraction center again with the Galataport Project. This gentrification comes with several transformations in this neighborhood, especially in sociological way. Art galleries in this environment are one of the results of this transformation. The rapid spread of “art” in this region is quite pragmatic, and it has brought many problems within itself. At this point, it would be reasonable to consider the galleries as an architectural spaces with the definition of “white cube” of Brian O’Doherty. Forming Diagrams

In this project, mainly seeks for the solutions of this problem, and a building with an inner courtyard as a public space is designed for everyone’s use. Building is also designed with respect to the silhouette of the street, and the main parts have the functions as exhibition area, workshops, library, conference room and restaurant. The facades facing the courtyard are designed as transparent as possible in order to increase the publicity effect and to break the white cube perception in art.

The inner courtyard was transformed into a public space with the design decision which makes whole building perceivable. This courtyard serves a resting place not only for visitors of museum, but also for the public. Besides, a restaurant and terrace overlooking the Galata Tower and the Bosphorus are designed and the viewpoint is developed not only facing the inner courtyard, but also towards Istanbul.

THE GRID Social Housing Project 5th Semester Project / 2016 / Kartal-Istanbul Advisor: Tümay Türkmen

Because of the increasing population and the developing transportation system of Istanbul, the slum and inactive parts of the city transformed into new financial centers and residential areas. Kartal, is an important example to the most affected part of the city from these changes. The fact that large companies have carried their headquarters to there, the transportation network has expanded in this direction made Kartal one of the new “residential centers” of Istanbul. The rapidly increased number of the new luxury buildings, which are not proper to the urban fabric, becomes a threat for the city and individuals in Kartal. Because of this situation, the main idea of the project is shaped by creating a space not only for residents, but also a public space for the entire society. In this context, “The Grid” has been designed with respect to the urban fabric in Kartal. Project is tackled within the framework of the social housing as cheap production and properly design for the city. According to the main idea, typologies are determined and forms of blocks are designed. All in all, on the ground level of the project, the public space was created not only for the habitants but also for the society. This project is aimed to preserve Kartal’s existing urban fabric which has been deteriorating as a result of the gentrification projects.

HISART History Musem National Student Competition / 2016 / Yedikule-Istanbul with Ahmet Yaymanoğlu

Industrial revolution is one of the most critical subject in the development of modern era. We can easily say that the roots of today’s technology are based on industrial revolution. The past generation technology and industry have lost their significance and remained inactive as a cause of developing technology day by day. Developing industry have affected the environment in a negative way both straightly and indirectly. It is a compulsory consequence that these old indusrty plants are blank and dangerous areas in a city planned wrong. One of these industrial structure that the source of city lighting indicating nineteenth century civilization is “Gasworks”. In the late 19th century, with this purpose Ottoman Empire have established Yedikule Gasworks in Yedikule district. Yedikule is a historic fabric where the transportation has integrated through railway and seaway. The gaswork settled in the area has enhanced the importance of this area. The district has an intense housing fabric with the immigration because of the establishment of gasworks. It is still a problem that the connection between citizens and the public space is engaged in many places in İstanbul because of the wrong city planning in 1950s-1960s. With the problem we had determined, the main idea has been formed of our Project. Firstly,it is been targeted to transform the historical gaswork in the center of the tranportation axis to public-art space within the programme we have given. In this way,the broken connection between citizens and the coast side will be recovered and the area designed as a museum will be a public art area.

In this point,if we analyze the datas environment give us it is obvious that the Kennedy Street has a very heavy traffic. This heavy traffic axis can be stopped in certain points with an arrangment of traffic lights can be connected between Project area and the recreation area in coast side. However, there is 5 meter elevation difference between Project area and the recreation area. With the purpose to cover this elevation difference and create a certain lineer Street(coridor) axix in this point for the users to reach the area without stairs. This coridor has designed as the main pedestrian entrence. The vehicle entrence,on the other hand, has decided to be on the northern side of the Project area. So it is been thought two entrences to the area from North and South.

The old owens with only front facade durable, have designed as permanent and temporary exhibitions and workplaces by creating a new construction system by conserving the front facades. The corridor between this two buildings, has transformed into a public and art Street by arranging a very strong landscaping. The gaswork in the middle of the Project area has approved the center of the museum and an open amphitheatre has designed in the center at the end of the pedestrian entrence. In this square, there has been designed a new paralel ramp to the exhibition buildings hereby it is provided the connection between North-south and West-east .

A new structure has been designed as training units and cafe in the West side of the area. This structure has seperated to the parts with different functions but this parts have united under the only roof covering. This building has designed one flat that’s why it doesn’t have a negative affect over the silhouette. The facade of the building is mostly transparent thus it ensures views from many points in thr building. In the basement of the cafe part,it’s been designed an auditorium with an Access from the pedestrian entrence. The building of administration and parking area has positioned in the eastern part of the area. There is a direct Access from the building to the Street between exhibition buildings. In the northern part of the Project area it’s created an open public exhibition area on the person-water-green axis by arranging a new landscape. Gaswork has desined as observation platform by offering the view of historical Wall, sea and Project area. It’s been thought to exhibit the war plane as a negative usage of technology in the gaswork as a useful example of technology. In conclusion, it’s aimed to approach to the Project area with a great respect, regain the green areas we are losing day by day as a result of industry revolution and recover the connection between inhabitants and coast side within a cultural public spaces.

THE MODULAR Urban Space National Student Competition / 2015 / Kartal-Istanbul with Damla Soyseven, Ahmet YaymanoÄ&#x;lu

As Lefebvre indicates The Right To The City is the equal access of all inhabitants to the potential benefits of the city, their participation in decision-making processes and the realization of their fundamental rights and freedoms. He defines the right to the city by associating it with daily life. In this context, Lefebvre explains it as the right to access urban life, a renewed centrality, encounters and exchanges, life rhythms and time uses, and the ability to change them according to the wishes of the inhabitants in order to ensure full use of places and moments. It is aimed to create a public space by only interfering the pavement and the nonfunctional facade of Hasan Ali YĂźcel Cultural Center in Kartal. It is aimed to provide different spatial experiences to the users with the 2x2m cubes that everyone can access easily from the society and can spend their free time. The 2x2m grid system shaped respect to the human-scale is the determinant of the location of the project. It is aimed to revitalize the coastal corner spaces not used in Kartal neighborhood and to give a voice to citizens on the public spaces in their neighborhoods.

MI CASA ES TU CASA Urban Camera Obscura EASA / 2017 / Group Construction Project / Fredericia-Denmark Advisors: Blanca Cobreros, Diego Jurado, Niccolo Di Meo

EASA (European Architecture Student Assembly), which has been organized every year with different themes, is offered solutions for contemporary design problems with the architecture student from different countires. Approximately five hundred architecture students from various countries try to associate their architectural perspectives and experiences, and witness that how the architecture affects the public spaces in the cities. In this context, I participated in EASA which was organized with the theme of Hospitality-Finding the Framework in Fredericia / Denmark in the summer of 2017. We experienced how we could affect the city as the two-week guests of Fredericia. I participated in the workshop entitled Mi Casa Es Tu Casa that built public Camera Obscura in harbor of the city. My intention to select this workshop is to have a permanent production in the city and to approach the city from a different visual framework from the port area which is one of the important public spaces in the city. I witnessed that a public space, which was built in 1:1 scale and revealed relationships between the individuals in the city, can directly affect each person in the society. During that two weeks, as being a part of this project, I experienced the architecture in a practical way as well as the theoretical aspects.

Production Process

Firstly, we built our temporary shelter and furniture which we used during the production for manufacturing and storing the materials. After that, we decided the design and arranged two-weeks program with the equal participation of everyone. As a result of the division of labor, I took part in the production process of the pieces that formed the floor of camera obscura for five days. Then we started to transport the produced pieces to project area for the process of joining. I took part in various sections from floor to roof detail during four days. As Camera Obscura would not receive any light, it was a very challenging and enjoyable process to be involved in the production of the closed part. At the end of the two weeks, we built a public Camera Obscura with a view from the port, which was accessible for all residents of Fredericia.
