Parenting Corner Gaetane Borders President Peas In Their Pods Babyland...No Place For Children A few years ago, I found out that there was a place in America where babies died at a rate that would be expected in a third world or underdeveloped nation. But, it’s not Somalia, Angola, or Cambodia that I’m writing about. Nope, it’s Tennessee! Of the 23 richest countries, the United States had the highest rate of infant mortality, according to the CIA World Fact Book.
types of tragedies. Here is a list of issues that negatively affect pregnancy and/or child health: Lifestyle Choices Maternal Health Alcohol and Drug/Substance Use Birth Defects Poor Nutrition Disease (STD) Irregular Prenatal Care Infections Closely spaced Psychological Stressors Poverty Domestic Violence As you can see, the majority of the issues on the list are preventable or easily treatable. However, community education is key. There are many organizations and initiatives that provide free or very affordable services that can help save the lives of babies. Here is a short list:
The first city health department report warning that Memphis had a problem with infant mortality was issued in 1935. In 2010, this issue had not changed because the state health department reported that in Shelby County, a baby died every 43 hours! Hospitals were reportedly overwhelmed with the number of single mothers who lack of prenatal care. The babies most at risk were African Americans from the most impoverished parts of town. Therefore, every Tuesday and Thursday in Memphis, as the minuscule bodies accumulated, the Health Department took over for the families who can't afford a funeral. The tiny bodies were buried in a cemetery referred to as Babyland. Although the name is reminiscent of an amusement park filled with exciting rides and pony rides…it was certainly not a place you would ever want your children to go..................
Healthy Start Designed to meet community needs, the projects include outreach, case management, health education and community consortia. For more information, visit www.hrsa.gov Medicaid and SCHIP Medicaid is a state and federal partnership that provides access to prenatal care for eligible mothers and health coverage for millions of infants from low-income families.
I am happy to share that there have been some improvements in this startling situation. A decade ago, babies born in the city and surrounding Shelby County were statistically more likely to die in the first year of their lives. The Shelby County health department made saving babies its goal, and sought help from a variety of entities like national and community organizations, faith-based groups, businesses and social service professionals. This effort paid off, as Shelby County's infant mortality rate dropped by nearly a third. This equals to roughly 74 more babies surviving to their first birthday. Let's pray that this trend continues! Prevention is one essential key in preventing these

JAQUILLA EVONNE SCALES MISSING SINCE 9/2001 WITCHITA KANSAS Every month as I look at all the faces of our missing children, the question still doesn’t change, What Is Happening To Our Children, and Where Are? Jaquilla now 16 I wonder if she even knows she missing, at this time my thoughts will remain still missing, I don’t want to think of the worse case scenario. Jaquilla, according to reports was taken in the middle of the night . We need your help in locating Jaquilla, along with all the other featured children. Jaquilla was last seen in bed in her Wichita, Kansas residence in the 1600 block of north Volutsia Street, near 15th and Hillside Streets, at approximately 12:30 a.m. on September 5, 2001. She was discovered missing at 3:00 a.m. She has never been heard from again. There were no signs of forced entry to the residence and no indication of a struggle, and the family's dog hadn't barked. The back door was broken at the time of Jaquilla's disappearance, and therefore was not locked. Jaquilla lived with her mother, Eureka Scales, her younger brother, two uncles and her maternal great-grandmother, Mattie Mitchell, at the time of her disappearance, and had no contact with her father. Because her Eureka was only fourteen years old when she had Jaquilla, she asked Mitchell to have custody. Jaquilla stated preschool the day before her disappearance. That night, her mother was staying with a friend and Mitchell had charge of the children. Social workers removed Jaquilla's younger brother from their home and placed him in the custody of the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services shortly after Jaquilla disappeared, due to concern about living conditions in the residence and about Jaquilla's disappearance. The boy was not returned to his mother's care until August 2004, almost three years later. Police are not sure whether or not Jaquilla was abducted. Her mother believes she is still alive. Eureka said her daughter was a very talkative child in 2001 and liked to wear colorful barrettes in her hair. Her favorite toy was a doll that could turn over by itself. Jaquilla's case remains unsolved. Are You Enabling Your Adult Child? Author Sharon Fox Are you wondering if you are enabling your adult child? These five signs will help you to determine whether or not you are helping or hurting. "Enabling" means that your action allows someone to continue to do something they otherwise couldn't do without it. It is also doing something for others that they should be doing for themselves.
note of these five tips to help you get your lives on track.
5 Tips to Encourage Your Adult Child to be Independent: Collect rent. Check the local classifieds to see what people are charging for rooms in your area. Set a monthly deadline and enforce it. If your child is late with payment, there will be a late fee. If the rent is not paid, you must firmly insist that the child may no longer live there.
Our adult children often need our help as they are maturing and preparing to become independent; however, too often we do things that do the opposite. Instead of helping them move toward independence, we foster dependence.
5 Signs That You are Enabling Your Adult Child You rescue your child repeatedly by paying for things because your he/she isn't working, isn't working enough, spent the money on something else, or is paying off debt that has accumulated from poor choices. Your child either doesn't plan to pay you back or offers to pay you back but never does.
Lay down rules about noise. Most apartments have "quiet times" that begin around 11pm and end around 7am. Make it very clear that you don't want to hear any noise from them during these times - no loud TV or music, no audible laughing, talking, or guests, etc. Lay out the consequences for "noise violations" such as more than 2 noise violations a month results in a rent hike. They'll feel embarrassed when their friends see they have a curfew and quiet time ordered by you!
You are tolerating disrespectful behavior toward you. You are doing this because your child has "problems" and doesn't seem to understand that you deserve to be respected. Your requests to be treated differently fall on deaf ears and only result in more mistreatment.
Consider not providing meals. Would you feed and clean up after someone renting a room? Of course not! Most people simply allow the renter access to their kitchen. The renter still has to buy and cook their own food. Your child may complain that s/he can't cook, or doesn't have time to cook, but many a young adult throughout modern civilization has gotten by on TV dinners and instant noodles for a few years in their lives. If you're concerned about nutrition, give your kid a bottle of multivitamins.
You and your spouse or other family members are frequently arguing about this adult child who is affecting everyone else negatively. Other people are telling you that you are tolerating too much and making excuses for this child. You are resistant to others' suggestions that you use tough love.
Set standards for cleanliness. Make it clear that s/he is responsible for cleaning after him/herself throughout the rest of the house - cleaning dishes, doing laundry, putting garbage in the garbage can, etc. You are not a maid. If you can hold down a job and still pay bills, clean, and provide for yourself, then so can your adult child.
You spend a lot of time thinking about how to "fix" the problems and yet your child doesn't show any interest in your ideas nor does there appear to be movement in a positive direction from your child on his/her own. This obsession to "fix" your adult child is keeping you from enjoying your own life as much as you would be without this "problem."
Limit privacy. Sure, your child is now an adult- but if he/she wants their privacy, then they need to get their own place. Make it very clear that as long as YOU (the parent) are responsible for the mortgage, property taxes, and maintenance of the house, then there is no other adult in the home having privacy privileges. Their privacy should be limited to the bathroom area for using the restroom or bathing. No bedroom dates should be allowed under any circumstances. If they are grown enough to need that much privacy, then they are grown enough to get their own place. Even after using these tips, remember that they are only to be used for a short time. Give your child a deadline to find their own place to stay and stick to that deadline. As long as they feel that you will always allow them to stay with you, they will never move. Stop making them so comfortable! Make them WANT to move out in order to get some peace!
You are working harder than your child. If you are taking on a second job, working longer hours, adding on extra chores, or taking on additional tasks while your son or daughter has many hours of down time, social time, party time, or anything else that is non-productive, then you are enabling your adult child to be lazy while you are working to support him/her. God intends that parents provide for their children while they are young; but He also intends for them to become adults who make wise choices. It is your job to parent in a way that does precisely that. If you are answering "yes" to these five signs, you are enabling your adult children rather than setting boundaries, then your actions aren't helping; they are hurting. If you find yourself in the category of enabling your child, please take

Homicide Sgt. Joe Burgoon has been the primary investigator in the case. He points to a file cabinet stuffed with information such as leads, lists, computer printouts of missing children and stacks of school rosters. ''We've even got information from psychics in there,'' he said. In 1986, Burgoon sent a report to Tech Times Issue 00 the FBI Academy in Quantico, Va., which runs a special program that analyzes unsolved killings throughout the country. ''The FBI could find nothing to compare to our case anywhere in the United States,'' Burgoon said. ''It's amazing.''

Two men who were in the basement of the building discovered the young girl. She was lying face-down in the furnace room with her hands tied behind her back with red and white nylon rope. The victim had been sexually assaulted prior to being strangled, which was the cause of her death.

pains them more than anything is that no one has ever come forward to identify the young victim. The St. Louis authorities have conducted extensive investigations into the victim's identity since 1983 and have received no clear leads. Her murderer(s) remain unknown, although several suspects have been under investigation. No arrests have been made in the case.

The victim's head had been removed with a large-bladed knife after her death. Her head has never been discovered. She had been killed elsewhere and brought to the vacant building after her death. There were no signs of previous abuse on the victim's body. There was no specific features that would give clues as to her identity.
'I don't suppose I'll ever forget that case,'' said Chief of Detectives Leroy J. Adkins, who was the commander of the homicide squad when the case began. ''It still bothers me,'' said Adkins. ''I guess I'm perplexed more than anything else because we've never identified her after all these years. ''Here you have a child, 8, 9, 10 years old and there's no relatives, parents, neighbors, schoolmates or friends who have reported her missing. Nobody has come forward to offer any information about her. ''What is most distressing is how a child that age can't belong to anybody.'' Adkins called the investigation ''one of most extensive, thorough, painstaking investigations in the history of the department.''
The victim was discovered at 5635 Clemens in the basement of the building pictured above

Sticks and Stones May Break My Bones and Words Will Hurt Me Too! Tara Shephard,MA,CADC,LADAC,ICADC How often have we heard the words sticks and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me? The reality is, WORDS DO HURT! Youth today are living in a society were saying mean and hurtful things are part of the norm. Those mean and hurtful sayings can have a very tragic ending as evident by the increase in school shootings and increase in teen suicide. Taking action is paramount. What is equally important is addressing the differences in how boys bully vs. how girls bully. Girl’s bully most through the form of relational aggression and saying hurtful things. Bullying is something that girls view as mean or ugly. Girls do not want to be viewed as mean and definitely not ugly. Thus, girls are faced with different types of bullies than boys. The ones they face may not look as scary from the outside, but who can cause just as much pain. GURLZ and Bullying is the theme of this year’s annual 3rd Annual “At-Promise” Girls Empowerment Conference, Daring 2 Strive Together hosted by Delta Community Based Services. The conference will be held on April 13, 2013 at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. The objective of the conference is twofold. The first is to address social and emotional issues in girl’s lives that negatively impact their ability of becoming educated, economically independent, future professional women of Arkansas. The second fold is to promote networking/collaboration amongst community based providers that offer “gender specific” services to girls. Through our outreach efforts, we are targeting girls statewide ages 12-18 whom are at-risk of poverty, new HIV infections, becoming victims of sexual/domestic assault, dropping out of school, bullying, drug addiction, interaction with the juvenile justice system, and unplanned pregnancy. According to research, social and emotional issues consistently emerge as contributing reasons why girls cannot or do not realize their potential of being successful in life. So, what can others do to address bullying? According to the National Crime Prevention Council, listed below is an overview of what the typical effects of bullying are and what you can do about it. The typical girl who bullies is popular, well-liked by adults, does well in school, and can even be friends with the girls she bullies. She doesn't get into fist fights, although some girls who bully do. Instead, she spreads rumors, gossips, excludes others, shares secrets, and teases girls about their hair, weight, intelligence, and athletic ability. She usually bullies in a group and others join in or pressure her to bully. The Effects This kind of bullying can have just as serious consequenc27 es as physical bullying. It can cause a drop in grades, low
self esteem, anxiety, depression, drug use, and poor eating habits in girls who are bullied. This kind of bullying is harder to see. Most of the time adults don't realize when girls are being bullied in this way. What You Can Do One of the best ways to stop this form of bullying is for the girls who see it or who are stuck in the middle to speak up and say that it is not okay. But only 15 percent of girls speak up, usually because they're afraid the bully will turn on them next. Parents and other adults can help girls beat bullying by teaching them how to stand up for themselves and their friends and by taking action themselves. Here are a few things to remember: Encourage kids to be kind and to help others, particularly if they see someone being bullied. Praise them when they do so. Tell girls they are special, and point out why. Help girls get involved in activities outside of school so they can make friends in different social circles. Don't push girls to be in the "right" class or on the "right" sports team. Let them choose what to play and with whom. Stop bullying when you see it. Don't let anyone, even your daughter, make fun of someone else even if she says she is only "joking." Be a good example. Don't gossip or make fun of others in front of young girls. Talk to girls about their friends, what they do together, and how they treat each other. Ask them what makes a good friend, and whether their friends have these qualities. If you know bullying is happening at school, speak to school officials and ask what they are doing to stop it. www.tarashephard.net tara@tarashephard.net 501-838-8448
