The truth is that African American children receive limited media coverage when they go missing. Sadly, without this exposure it is less likely that they will be safely found. The staff at Peas In Their Pods works diligently to spread awareness about this issue by alerting media outlets as needed when African American children are missing or abducted. The media play a critical role in getting news and information out to the public, maybe in the future the role of reporting will include the safety of our children by alerting the public when one of our children are in danger, especially our African American Children, the response time ; immediate. Our mission is to bring awareness to our communities the plight of these children, and to make them a national priority.

12 Ways to Keep Kids Safe Like many parents at this time of year, I often find myself overscheduled and racing from one task to the next, frequently with my daughter in tow. In fact, at a recent parent workshop I was teaching, the subject came up about how to keep our kids safe during this hectic time of year. In other words ... how do we keep an eye on our kids as we juggle assorted holiday chores, shopping, and outings? Of course, nothing beats plain old-fashioned, handholding supervision. But let's face it, it's not always that simple, especially if your children are not exactly toddlers anymore. And even if they are, when was the last time your toddler let you calmly drag them by the hand through boring, mundane, grown-up tasks -- without whining, squirming, or even making a run for it the minute something interesting catches their eye? It's easy for kids to get sidetracked with all the sights, sounds, and smells surrounding us at holiday time. Have them follow the "3 Giant Steps Rule"... kids can only be 3 giant steps away from Mom or Dad at all times. It's a fun way to get the kids stay close by -- make it a game! If children do become separated from you, teach them to look for a "safe stranger" who can help them. For example, a MOM with kids or the cash register person can help a child who is lost. Avoid telling children to go to the "manager." Any adult in a suit, who looks important, can look like the manager to a child. Children must know that they should NEVER leave the mall or store to go looking for you in the parking lot. Let them know that you would never go outside or leave until you are reunited -- no matter what anyone else tells them. Dress children in brightly colored clothes to help keep them easily visible, and be sure to remember what they are wearing. Especially their SHOES. You may even want to take a quick picture with your cell phone before venturing out. In busy places like airports or shopping malls, consider using a cute "harness" for toddlers who are prone to running off. Don't worry about what others may think. It's your peace of mind that is most important. Remind children of the "CHECK FIRST" rule. Kids must always check first with you before going anywhere in a public place, including another store, play area, or even the restroom. 3
Never leave children alone at public facilities such as video arcades, movie theaters, play areas, etc. as a "convenient babysitter" while holiday shopping. Predators are known to look for kids who are unsupervised. Always bring young children into the restroom with you. Avoid facilities that are down dark or long hallways. Look for well-lit restrooms in high traffic areas. If you are comfortable with letting an older child (at least 10 years old) use the men's room alone, always stand outside the door and call in as your child enters, "I'm right out here if you need me." If your child has been gone for a while, open the door slightly and say, "Is everything okay?" Insist that your child answers you. If you don't get an answer or are unsure, enter the restroom immediately to be sure your child is safe. Informing your child that you'll be doing this will encourage them to answer you quickly. Discuss age-appropriate safety issues with your child in a calm, non-fearful manner. When discussing "strangers," inform them that it isn't what a person looks like, it's what they ask a child to do that makes someone dangerous. Kids have been known to leave with a stranger because "he seemed nice" or "he didn't look like a stranger." In an emergency, a loud yell is one of the best things a child can do. Teach them to yell out "MOM, DAD", "STOP," "HELP", "THIS IS NOT MY DAD." A child calling attention to himself in public is a predator's worst nightmare. Review your home address and phone number with children. All kids should know their parents' cell phone number. If necessary, you can write in on a slip of paper, and tuck it into their pocket. Humanizing Law Enforcement Patrolman Joshua Bryan Middle Township Police Department Cape May County, NJ Working with missing children & families, community, its critical that law enforcement agencies make themselves approachable when a crisis does arise. Our youth need to be assured of this fact within and outside of community. I spoke with Patrolman Bryan about doing his part.
It’s important for our youth to have available resources that bring positive changes. Yes it is, We want the community to know about the D.A.R.E. Program and the benefits. What is your role in the D.A.R.E program? Currently employed by the Middle Township Police Department, I have had the opportunity to serve my community in many capacities. For the past three years I have been a D.A.R.E officer teaching fifth graders at a local elementary school. I became a DARE officer to reach out to the youth in my community. Through D.A.R.E I am able to guide them towards a more positive way of life. My involvement in the D.A.R.E program is also a form of community policing which can open lines of communication between law enforcement officers and the youth. Because of the D.A.R.E program, the youth can feel comfortable coming to officers with any issues, such as abuse, neglect, bullying, or peer pressure. What do you hope to accomplish? Taranika was also wearing a green medallion ring with “Tara” and “Betty” written on it. Both of her ears are pierced and she has a dimple mark on the left side of her face.

Myron was wearing a red t-shirt, jeans, a diamond earring in his left ear, and no shoes. He has an appendectomy scar on his abdomen and a scratch on his left cheek. Marco also has a scar on his left ankle. Marco is biracial (AfricanAmerican/Latino).
Taranika’s mother was the last person to see her. She said she last saw her around 10:00pm on the evening she went missing. When she went to go check on her, about 2 hours later, Taranika was gone. It was believed at first Taranika left on her own accord but she is now listed as Endangered Missing. DNA is available to positively identify Taranika when she is found. Marco’s mother, Livia Cadenas, stated that on the day he went missing he had become upset with her because she threatened to punish him for not taking a shower. In fact, he was so upset that he immediately left the house with no socks and shoes on. Cadenas also stated Marco left behind a note stating, “I’m leaving you because you hit my daddy.” Marco was referring to his stepfather, Alfredo, who had been hit over the head with a bottle by his mother. Marco has not been seen or heard from since the day he left his home. Marco’s biological father is dead, killed during a shootout with Ohio police after a grocery store holdup. Dental records are available to positively identify Marco when he is found. He is listed as Endangered Missing. On the day she went missing, Toya left her home to walk to a local store. On her way Toya talked to her mother’s ex-boyfriend and a friend of his. Both have been cleared as suspects. Toya’s mother was at a wedding dress fitting and was getting ready to be married in three days. Toya was to be the flower girl. After Toya’s disappearance her mother decided to proceed with the wedding in hopes that it would encourage someone to speak up about Toya’s disappearance. No one came forward and Toya has not been seen or heard from since. Foul play is suspected in the disappearance of Toya. Her case is listed as a Non Family abduction. Vital Statistics at Time of Disappearance DOB: Oct 1, 1974 Age At Time Of Disappearance: 13 Missing: Jul 27, 1988 Sex: Male Race: Black Hair: Black Eyes: Brown Height: 5'5" (165cm) Weight: 106lbs (48kg) Missing From: PHOENIX AZ United States Myron Timell Traylor is shown age progressed to 36 years. Myron was last seen around 6:00pm walking with his mother in Phoenix, Arizona on July 27, 1988. He was wearing red and white striped shirt, blue and white print shorts and white sneakers. He also has a ½ inch scar on the right side of his head. On the day he went missing, Myron and his mother walked from their home to his grandparents’ house. His home is about one half block from his grandparents’ home on east Pecan Rd. They were to do laundry at the home and Myron had a bag of laundry with him at the time of his disappearance. While on their way, Myron decided to stop at a nearby stand called OK Fish-NChips, which is located at 16th St. and Southern Avenue, to get a soft drink. His mother decided to walk ahead and meet up with Myron at his grandparent’s house. He never made it. A possible suspect in the case turned out to be Myron’s mother’s former boyfriend. Due to lack of evidence he was never charged in the case. The former boyfriend was one of four witnesses that saw Myron at the OK Fish-N-Chips that evening. Investigators have said the former boyfriend was involved with drugs in 1988 and that Myron may have confronted the former boyfriend about his involvement with drugs after seeing him at the stand. Myron’s aunt also stated the former boyfriend wore a sling shortly after Myron’s disappearance. The former boyfriend claimed he got the injury from a dog bite. Hope came to Myron’s case in 1991 when investigators received a letter that claimed Myron was buried on a private property near 24th Street and Jones Avenue in Phoenix. Officials searched the area but there was no sign of Myron or any other evidence. Although there was no evidence found law enforcement believes Myron was killed and buried nearby the area he went missing. There is no other information in the case of Myron. In 2002, 14 years after his disappearance, Myron’s mother died. Myron’s case is listed as a NonFamily Abduction. Tracy Lynn Davenport Vital Statistics at Time of Disappearance: DOB: Mar 19, 1967 Age At Time Of Disappearance: 6 Missing: Apr 27, 1973 Sex: Female Race: Black Hair: Black Eyes: Brown eight: 4'6" (137cm) Weight: 60lbs (27kg) Missing From: SAN RAFAEL CA United States Tracy Lynn Davenport is shown age progressed to 40 years. Tracy was last seen leaving for school at around 11:00am in San Rafael, California on April 27, 1973. She never made it to school that day and has not been seen or heard from since. Tracy was wearing a blue and black flowered dress on the day she went missing. She also has burn scars on her lower hip and abdomen. At the time of her disappearance Tracy was living with her mother, grandmother, and other relatives in Room 49 at the old Bermuda Palms Motel – now Room 149 of the Motel 6 at 737 E. Francisco Blvd.. Her parents were separated at the time. Tracy was a kindergartener at the nearby Bahia Vista School. When she didn’t return from school that evening her family realized something was wrong. However they did not report Tracy missing until the next morning. Once Tracy was reported missing investigators began searching for evidence and questioning people who lived in the area. One witness stated seeing Tracy walking to school and being followed by a black or dark green car. The witness stated it followed slowly behind on Canal Street as she walked to school. For years rumors swirled around that Tracy had been killed and then buried somewhere on the grounds of Bermuda Palms. Thirty-six years after Tracy’s disappearance two retired investigators who had always been haunted by Tracy’s case, and were young police officers and the time she went missing, decided to take another look into Tracy’s disappearance. A team was pulled together to search the grounds of the old Bermuda Palms. They were able to search an area around the pool, which is now covered by flooring. They were also able to breach a crawl space near the pool. They were not physically able to search the area due to the air in the crawl space being deemed as dangerous however they were able to examine the space with a telescope camera. A few pieces of wood and a pair of old safety glasses were the only items found. There was no sign of Tracy. Although Tracy was not found investigator felt a sense of relief that they now could put rumors to rest that Tracy was buried somewhere on the old grounds of Bermuda Palms. The case remains open today and officials believe that someone out there has information on the whereabouts of Tracy. Tracy’s family is very grateful that her case remains open and that search efforts still continue but they also feel that the case was botched from the beginning when her disappearance was not taken seriously. She was classified as a runaway in the beginning and they believe because of this investigators ignored what could have been important clues while the case was still warm. Sadly we may never know what happened to Tracy. Her family has set up a reward of $500 and the Independent Journal has given an extra $1000 in hopes that there is someone out there who has information that brings Tracy home. Tracy’s case is now listed as Endangered Missing. How to Keep Kids Safe While Using Social Media, Driving and Texting Diane Griffin President/CEO Security First & Associates
When our children are young, we often go to great lengths to keep them safe in their physical environments. Yet, as our children get older, it becomes more difficult for us to keep them safe as their environments expand beyond physical space and begin to include social media. As a security expert, I see firsthand what can happen when kids fail to use social media tools in positive ways. Here are some of my tips on how parents can keep their teens safe while using social media: Make sure the tools they are using are age appropriate. Did you know that your child is not allowed to have a Facebook page until they are 13? Make sure your tweens and teens are using tools that are appropriate for their age and become as familiar as possible with the networks they are using, including reading the network’s privacy policy. Be their ‘Friend’ or ‘Follower’. Before you allow your teen to set up a social media profile require that they allow you to become their ‘Friend’ or ‘Follower’ on that particular network (such as Facebook or Twitter). This way, you can monitor their activity and conversations in a very open and honest way. I also recommend that parents have access to the usernames and passwords of their child’s accounts. Discuss what items should-and shouldn’t-be posted. Let your teens know that they should never give out personal information—even on their profile pages—and that comments and photos they post should only be those items they feel comfortable sharing with you as a parent. In addi tion, emphasize to your teens that what happens online usually stays online—messages and photos rarely stay private in the world of social media and cannot be taken back. As the popularity of communication via text messaging rises, the incidence of accidents caused by texting and driving has risen dramatically as well. This has caused some states to outlaw the practice. Because texting has become such a way of life and so commonplace, people tend to ignore the laws that ban it, much as they do speed limits. In addition to being against the law in many states, texting while driving has the potential of causing tremendous harm in the blink of an eye. What many people fail to realize is that a vehicle is a deadly weapon if misused. Glancing away from the road to send a text message or to receive one while driving creates a very real chance that your teen won't look back in time to avert tragedy. Olisa was last seen on July 8, 1982 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. There are no details on what she was wearing that day. Olisa’s mother, Denise Williams, stated on the day of her disappearance she and Olisa’s father, Isiah Williams, were involved in an altercation. He knocked Denise down, took Olisa from her arms, and left with the child. Isiah states that he had been drinking that day, as well as, smoking marijuana. He remembers driving to Island Park and falling asleep on a bench. He left Olisa in the car while he slept. When he woke up the door to his vehicle was open and Olisa was gone. He stated he did not report Olisa missing at first because he thought her mother or other relatives had taken her. Isiah changed his story on many occasions. First it was someone took the baby, then he lost the baby, killed her, she died in a hospital, and “the child was across the water.” The Huron River was search but there were no signs of Olisa. At one point Isiah was arrested on a parole violation and to avoid being charged he told the judge he had information about Olisa. He stated he would only speak up if his charges were dropped. The judge refused. Denise searched many years for Olisa. She even reported her daughter’s disappearance to the National Center for Missing & and Exploited Children, making it one of the first cases for the agency. The center didn’t officially open until a year later. In more recent years investigators have not been able to locate either of Olisa’s parents. 1992 was the last time someone spoke to Denise and she stopped responding to letters. Olisa’s case has gone cold and investigators hope that one day someone will come forward with information that will finally break the case. They believe there is a possibility that Olisa may still be alive. Olisa is listed as a Non Family Abduction. A large percentage of this young people who are aging-out of the foster care system onto the streets are women. Research shows that girls that age-out of foster care are the most vulnerable to domestic violence, prostitution, substance abuse and suicide. These young women enter adulthood wounded, dispirited and brokenhearted. Being on the streets without anyone to turn to and the uncertainties that follow is a scary scenario to even the best of us. Can you imagine the terror and the anxiety that these young women go through day after day, night after night? Family Values Our family should play a very important part in our lives. But as the saying goes "familiarity breeds contempt", when we get familiar with something or someone often times we can neglect the person or thing that we are familiar with... our family is often the object of our neglect. We neglect them for our careers, friends, and even our own selfishness. We sometimes say negative things to them thinking our words won't hurt them 'oh it's only my spouse or my children they'll get over it.' Wrong! Negative words have just as much of an effect on your family. They can cause hurt, pain, confusion, and cause your loved ones to distance themselves from you. We must remember that our ministry starts from the home. We have to build up our families and spend time with them, and always say positive things to uplift them. When was the last time you told your spouse how much they mean to you and how they are the best person in the world, nothing can compare to them? Or told you children that you love them and despite what they're going through, especially in their teen years, you will always be there for them? When was the last time you all sat around the dining table conversing or have a family meeting? Most importantly when was the last time you prayed together? Take some time to put your family first, after God. Cherish the time you have with them now because one day they may not be around. Tomorrow is not promised to anyone so make every moment count.
BARBECUE BRISKET 3 lb brisket, trimmed and most of fat removed 2 teaspoon garlic powder 3 teaspoons Lawry’s seasoned salt 2 teaspoons black pepper, freshly ground 1 lager style beer (Shiner light) 1-2 cups BBQ sauce (recipe follows) Pre heat oven to 325 degrees. Line a baking dish with foil. (Or place in your crock pot and cook on LOW) Place trimmed brisket in dish (fat side down). Sprinkle garlic powder, seasoned salt, pepper over the brisket. Add in the beer and cover tightly. Reduce heat to 275 degrees and cook for 4 1/2 hrs. Uncover and add BBQ sauce over all the brisket. Cover and place back in the oven for an additional two hours. Remove brisket from oven and let cool. In the mean time, drain off the juice from the pan. Place into a saucepan and cook over medium high heat until reduced and thick, approximately thirty to forty-five minutes. Serve meat with reduced BBQ on top. Sauce: 1 1/2 tablespoons brown sugar 1 cup ketchup 3 tablespoons butter 1/4 cup water 1/2 teaspoon celery salt 1 tablespoon liquid smoke flavoring 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce 1 1/2 teaspoons ground mustard, salt and pepper to taste

KEYLIME PIE WITH VANILLA WHIPPED CREAM Crust: 1 1/4 cups graham cracker crumbs (from 9 graham crackers) 2 tablespoons sugar 1/2 cup shredded coconut Pinch kosher salt 5 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted Filling: 4 egg yolks, lightly beaten 4 ounces cream cheese, room temperature 1 14-ounce can sweetened condensed milk 2/3 cup key lime juice Zest of 2 limes Topping: 1 cup whipping cream 1 teaspoon vanilla 1/4 cup sugar Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place oven rack in middle position. Make crust: In the bowl of a food processor, process the graham cracker crumbs, sugar, shredded coconut, and salt until blended. Pour into a bowl and add melted butter. Stir well to combine; pour into 9-inch pie plate. Press graham cracker mixture evenly onto the bottom and sides of pie plate. Bake for 10 minutes and let cool on a rack. Leave oven on.
SWEET POTATO WAFFLES
2 cups peeled, 1/2" cubes red-skinned sweet potatoes 1 cup whole milk 2 large egg yolks 1/4 cup (packed) light brown sugar 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) unsalted butter, melted 1 teaspoon freshly grated peeled ginger 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour Make filling: In a stand mixer using the whisk attachment, beat egg 1 tablespoon baking powder yolks and cream cheese until well blended and no lumps remain. 1 1/4 teaspoons ground cinnamon Add sweetened condensed milk, key lime juice, and lime zest and 1/2 teaspoon salt beat until incorporated and smooth. Pour into pie crust and bake 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves for 15 minutes. Cool completely on rack, then cover and refrigerate 1/8 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg over night or 8 hours. 6 large egg whites, room temperature Nonstick vegetable oil spray Make topping: With an electric mixer (or a stand mixer using the whisk attachment), beat cream, vanilla, and sugar together on mePlace sweet potatoes in a steamer basket set in a dium speed until stiff peaks form. Serve with key lime pie. large sauce pan of simmering water. Steam potatoes until tender, about 17 minutes. Transfer to a medium bowl and mash well. Add milk, egg yolks, brown sugar, Butter, and ginger; whisk to blend.

Preheat waffle iron. Whisk flour and next 5 ingredients in a large bowl. Add potato mixture and whisk to blend. Using an electric mixer, beat egg whites in another large bowl until peaks form. Add 1/3 of whites to potato mixture; fold just to blend. Add remaining whites in 2 batches, folding just to blend between additions. Coat waffle iron with nonstick spray. Working in batches, add batter to waffle iron (amount needed and cooking time will vary depending on machine). Cook until waffles are lightly browned and set.

Yet, when things get to a point that we can’t seem to look beyond the issue that is plaguing us we tend to lose faith. When we lose things in our lives that are precious to us, even though they may not matter to someone else we many times begin to look at the dark side of the journey …o yee of little faith. When we can no longer look at the things that we’ve gone through and look at how the good Lord brought us through we begin to look at the dark side of the journey…o yee of little faith. When we feel that our heart, mind, body, and soul can no longer move forward because the way seems so long we tend to look at the dark side of the journey…o yee of little faith. When we get that news that we weren’t expecting to hear or events that take place bring us so far down that we don’t think we can see past it, we tend to look at the dark side of the journey…o yee of little faith. When we feel that we’re on our last leg and there is no rescue for us we tend to look at the dark side of the journey. When our bills seem to be more than our finances we tend to look at the dark side of the journey…o yee of little faith. When we have so much on our plate and nothing seems to be looking up we tend to look at the dark side of the journey… o yee of little faith. Well let’s turn this around now and look at things that will happen in the midst of that journey that may be dark now, but will soon give way to light. Though we may have lost something or someone that is most precious to us look towards to light, look at what God may be preparing to give you, or if it has been someone, you must keep in mind that God’s purpose has already been carried out through that individual…and I can truly say this having lost one of my grandmother’s recently, she’s no longer in pain and she lived her life, bringing our family together before her passing. When you begin to stare down the issues that you are facing think about the things that you’ve been through and what you felt like going through them and how you came out of it. It was rough at that time, but you made it, so why not have faith that you’ll come through this as well. When the bills are due and it seems like you have more bills than money does it not fall short of amazing that you can pay all of your bills even if you’re only left with a dollar? I know that I’ve been in that boat…honestly still find it nothing short of amazing even today. I have been going through storms even in this last month since my last letter, and while I do I have to think about my own words to encourage myself, I know that the power of God is nothing but awesome, I always seem to come through the hardships that seem to come upon me more often than not. I am not saying that I have not lost faith in some things and have to snap myself back into reality, but I can say for what I am looking at now I stand on my faith that all of the things that I am and will endure are already worked out. This goes for you as well, it’s already done you just have to believe it. God said it in His word…”if you have faith just the size of a mustard seed, I can move mountains for you.” That is something that I believe and will testify to everyday of my life. I want that mustard seed faith. There is nothing too hard for God to do. Where is Your Faith…Stand on It.

Crust: 3 cups flour 1 cup butter (cut into pieces and softened) ½ cup packed brown sugar Beat flour, butter and brown sugar in large mixer bowl until crumbly. Press into greased 13x9 pan. Bake in pre heated 350 oven 12-15 minutes or until golden brown. Filling: 4 large eggs ¾ cup light corn syrup ¾ cup granulated sugar ¼ cup amaretto liqueur 2 table spoons butter melted 1 tablespoon cornstarch 2 cups sliced almonds 2 cups (12 oz. package) chocolate chips Chocolate drizzle Beat eggs, corn syrup, granulated sugar, liqueur, butter and cornstarch in medium bowl with wire whisk. Stir in almonds and 1 2/3 cups of chips. Pour and spread over hot crust. Bake at 350 for 225-30 minutes or until center is set. Cool pan to room temperature on wire rack. Top with Chocolate Drizzle, let set and then cut into bars Chocolate Drizzle: Place remaining chips in heavy plastic bag. Microware on High power for 45 seconds; kneed bag to mix. Cut a small hole in corner of bag; squeeze to drizzle chocolate over bars.
