STORIA

Per valutare e meglio capire la storia dell’Universal, dobbiamo, senza dubbio, conoscere la situazione geografica, storica ed economica; all’inizio legata ai luoghi ove nacque e più avanti legata al mondo intero. Alla fine del 1800 (1) Le Locle e La Chaux-de-Fonds erano due centri orologieri a livello mondiale; vi si svolgevano infatti attività sia artigianali (2) che industriali (3) con notevole impegno di manodopera specializzata. In questi luoghi si sono poste le basi di una delle attività più belle e durature della Svizzera, che troverà in futuro la sua più alta espressione nella Fiera di Basilea; perché a Le Locle vi erano numerosi maestri orologiai che divennero famosi (Bergeon freres, Jurgensen, Henry Moser, Tissot &fils….) e che rendevano interessante l’ambiente esponendo in modo permanente le novità presso le loro orologerie. In questo contesto di grande espansione per l’orologeria svizzera, giovedì 18 gennaio 1894 alle ore otto, Numa Descombes (nato a LeLocle nel 1863 – 31 anni) e Ulysse Gorge Perret (nato a LeLocle nel 1868 – 26 anni), fondarono la “Universal Watch” con sede a LeLocle in rue du College, che aveva come obiettivo la “fabrication de boìtes, des cuvettes, des cadrans, de mouvements, d’étuis et emballages de montres” (4). Questa dicitura nell’oggetto sociale rappresentava, per quell’epoca, l’unica maniera per proteggere il marchio e

Sarà la fiera “Montres & Bijoux” tenutasi a Ginevra nel 1950 a dare l’occasione di presentare il primo orologio Universal con quadrante in smalti policromi, sia dipinti che cloisonné (22). L’autore dei quadranti è Charles Poluzzi, uno dei più stimati smaltatori svizzeri e i soggetti preferiti erano le mappe di paesi arabi, dove risiedevano gli acquirenti pronti a sborsare cifre considerevoli per questi pezzi unici (23). Fece eco nel 1958 la notizia che Srul El Sabban (allora ministro delle finanze dell’Arabia Saudita) ordinò all’Universal 50 esemplari di un orologio in oro con l’effige del Re Faisal posta sul quadrante (24). Nel 1952 vengono brevettati sia un sistema che permette l’affissione saltante dei secondi che un nuovo sistema di ricarica bidirezionale con massa oscillante rotativa. A Basilea nel 1953 viene esposta la versione impermeabile del Tri-Compax, con il nuovo sistema di impermeabilizzazione sia della corona che della cassa e un quadrante diviso in due parti. Il 28 aprile del 1954 viene inaugurata a Carouge la nuova fabbrica che fu considerata all’epoca la più innovativa per la progettazione e realizzazione di orologi di qualità e la società cambia di nuovo nome diventando la “Manifacture des Montres Universal – Perret freres SA - CarougeGeneve” (20). Gli architetti avevano progettato un edificio molto luminoso – il 60% delle facciate era occupato da enormi vetrate – ma si erano anche preoccupati del peso di alcuni macchinari e della necessaria stabilità durante le lavorazioni, risolvendo questi problemi con soluzioni che eliminavano le vibrazioni, garantendo così la massima precisione (21). All’interno della fabbrica l’ora esatta veniva fornita dovunque da un impianto al quarzo e un dispositivo diffondeva musica in tutti i reparti; queste innovazioni non lasciano dubbi sugli ambiziosi progetti dei fratelli Perret. Il cronografo “Compur” con due ruote a colonna Nel passaggio fra il monopulsante e il due pulsanti si è avuto uno stadio intermedio in cui per avere la possibilità di fermare la lancetta e poi farla ripartire dopo la misurazione, si è introdotta una ruota a colonne sotto il quadrante con la funzione di interrompere la trotteuse per poi poterla far ripartire senza azzerare. LE NUMERAZIONI - LE NUMEROTATION - NUMBERING Gli archivi della Maison Universal sono andati quasi completamente dispersi nel tempo, a seguito del succedersi di varie gestioni societarie. Per questo motivo non si sono trovati riscontri sicuri circa i criteri seguiti nella numerazione delle casse e nelle referenze dei modelli, essendo impossibile consultare i documenti ufficiali. La tabella seguente, che fornisce le date di fabbricazione dagli anni ’30 al 1967 in base ai numeri di produzione, pur non consentendo collocazioni temporali assolutamente precise, è comunque preziosa perché l’unica a disposizione.

Les archives de la maison Universal ont été presque entièrement dispersées au fil du temps, à la suite des divers changements de gestion et de direction. C’est pour cette raison qu’il n’existe pas d’affirmations sûres concernant les critères suivis pour numéroter les boîtes ni pour établir les références des modèles, étant impossible de consulter les documents officiels. Le tableau suivant, qui fournit les dates de fabrication des années 1930 à 1967 en fonction des numéros de production, bien que ne permettant pas de situer les pièces de manière absolument précise dans le temps, est dans tous les cas précieux dans la mesure où il est le seul dont nous disposions.

Each time management of the company changed hands, another small part of the Universal archives was lost. This explains the absence of any reliable sources of information regarding the numbering system and reference marking used for cases and models, as no official reference documents exist. The table below lists the production dates of timepieces released from the 1930s to 1967 based on the serial numbers; although this may not provide a comprehensive and fully accurate timeline, it is still an invaluable guide (and the only one of its kind available).

GIRARD-PERREGAUX Diverso è il caso di Girard-Perregaux, che si faceva produrre direttamente da Universal i cronografi già assemblati e marcati. Negli archivi Universal si trovano le diverse tipologie di crono prodotti a nome GirardPerregaux, e vi erano pure dei modelli da tasca.

Le cas de Girard-Perregaux est différent. Cette maison fait directement produire par Universal des chronographes déjà assemblés et marqués. On trouve dans les archives d’Universal les divers types de chronographes produits sous le nom de Girard-Perregaux. Il y a aussi des modèles de poche.

Unlike Eberhard, Girard-Perregaux commissioned ready-assembled and marked chronographs directly from Universal. The various types of chronograph produced for Girard-Perregaux can be found in Universal’s archives, including several pocket versions.

Il cronografo qui riprodotto mantiene la stessa impostazione dei quadranti Universal con tanto di scritta compax e la numerazione stampigliata sul fondello (1491xxx degli anni ’50 circa); la referenza di cassa (22294) inoltre ci ha permesso di ritrovarlo negli archivi dell’Universal.

Le chronographe ici reproduit conserve la position des cadrans Universal avec la mention Compax et la numérotation estampillée sur le fond (1491xxx des années 1950 environ). La référence de la boîte (22294) nous a par ailleurs permis de le retrouver dans les archives d’Universal.

The chronograph pictured here has the same dial layout as Universal watches and even the wording Compax and numbering punched on the case back (1491xxx from around the 1950s ); we were able to trace this model in the Universal archives through the case identifier (22294).
