P1 Completes Work on Museum of Art and Light in Manhattan, KS

23-foot chandelier + Radina’s Cafe

When you walk into the new MOA+L (Museum of Art and Light) and see the 23-foot colorful glass chandelier, you could easily be at an upscale museum in Manhattan, NY. But this gem is located in Manhattan, KS, also known as the “Little Apple”.

Manhattan, KS, is now home to one of the newest immersive art experiences in the U.S., featuring traditional, digital and immersive art.

The Museum of Art + Light is the first art museum in the United States to present permanent multi-sensory immersive exhibition experiences along with displays of physical fine art objects.

Museum Director Erin Dragotto says she looks forward to the technology – and education – the museum can offer.

“Our mission is to bridge 21st century technology with the visual and performing arts,” she said. “This is the first museum in the country built with that in mind. The museum will also offer classes from some of the artists featured, teaching some of the techniques they use.”

Perhaps the museum’s crowning glory, Mezmereyz, fondly known as “The Mez”, is the Museum of Art + Light’s multi-sensory, state-of-the-art, 21,500 sq. ft. immersive exhibition

environment. It is the first exhibit of its kind to be permanent and available all year ‘round, with rotating exhibits and artists.

The electrical team at P1’s Manhattan, KS, office recently completed work on the distinctive electrical systems that power the museum experience, including “The Mez”.

The electrical scope just for The Mez included power for 108 Epson projectors spanning across approximately 37,000 linear sq. ft. to produce 188,000,000 pixels of animated art.

According to Project Engineer Steven Smoll, says P1 had to be careful when running the wiring.

“P1 was able run the electrical in this room while keeping the wiring as hidden as possible so as to not interfere with experience,” he said.

Digital art may be the main attraction at this new museum, but they will still have traditional art exhibited as well.

Steven notes this required 2,800 feet of track with over 350 light heads to be installed into the ceiling.

“With timing and teamwork, all the trades were able to work together to get these installed properly,” he said.

2,800 FEET OF TRACT LIGHTING

Post-design changes are not uncommon on some jobs, and Steven notes the team was able to adapt to several “after the fact” changes with this one.

“The first change our team tackled was the big chandelier that greets museum patrons,” Steven said.

“Adding this chandelier meant P1 had to route more power from the mechanical room, working around the elevator shaft, and running the wiring up into the 40 ft. lobby ceiling.”

In addition to the chandelier, the museum added a Radina’s Café, which entailed adding an additional transformer. Radina’s is a staple for coffee and baked goods in Manhattan, KS, adding some local flavor to the museum.

“Our electrical team had to run additional conduit and pipe to the third floor on the opposite side of the building, and they did it all while maintaining the

original schedule,” Steven explained.

The museum project was actually a combination of an existing structure and a new build.

”There was already part of an existing building, and we connected the new building to that,” Steven said.

“The existing building had no fire alarm or sprinkler system, so we had to tie the new building to the old building, run it all together, and get it all tied back to one central panel.”

“The only place to run wires for everything was on the second floor of the existing building within the attic space,” Steven said.

All the hard work paid off in the end, and the museum had their grand opening on November 8, 2024.

MOA+L is expected to be quite a draw for “the little apple”, and P1 was proud to play a role in this valuable piece of Manhattan, KS, history. 

“With timing and teamwork, all P1 trades worked together to get the lighting installed properly.”

What Makes Your Holiday Happy?

We asked P1 associates to share what has - or will - make your holiday the absolute best this year, and you really delivered some great stories!

Growing up in NW Missouri, winter months could become bitter by Christmas. For as long as I can remember, my family participates in the “Snow Challenge”. Family members take off shoes, socks and roll up pant legs. We plunge our toes into the snow. Whoever can withstand the freeze the longest – all while performing assigned tasks, like touching the mailbox, running 20 yards, etc., receives a special gift and bragging rights for the year.

For over 50 years, my mom made Povitica bread for the Christmas season. It started when she & my dad first started dating to impress his Croatian immigrant family. When I was little, I was “in charge” of grinding the walnuts for her. As time went on, I wasn’t involved with the holiday baking anymore, but mom & my older sister started making it together every year. Due to illness, mom didn’t get to make it last year. In February my sister moved to Hawaii, and in early May, mom passed away. To honor mom this year, over Zoom (Hawaii to Missouri), I will be taking mom’s spot and my sister and I will be continuing the tradition mom started over 50 years ago. This year mom and her tradition live on by giving me and Aimee a way to become closer even if we’re half a country and an ocean apart.

A few things that make my holidays happy are: Buying a new ornament with my husband every year that symbolizes something that happened or a specific interest; matching Christmas PJs for the family (dogs included); making cookie boxes every year with my mom to share with friends/family; attending a Christmas Eve candlelight church service.

The thing I love most about the holidays is spending quality time with my family and seeing the joy on their faces. After my hubby & I married, we started hosting Christmas at our house with our parents and closest sibling spending the night on Christmas Eve. It was a packed house, but so much fun with all the amazing food and all the hugs and laughs we shared. It reminded me of the holiday parties we used to have when I was a kid.

Having my family all together makes me happy. Plus, all the good food!

Senior Project Manager, Lenexa Construction

My holidays are always made brighter because of the joy my four grandchildren and my wife bring to my life. Every day during the year we have the blessing of seeing our grandchildren, but during this time it always seems to have a little more meaning. We always get together and take a trip to a special event or place here in town. Time is precious and we all know that it waits for no one so love every minute and rejoice in the moments spent together.

The Pickle Ornament: Every year on Christmas morning, my parents will hide a pickle ornament on the tree. My siblings and I hide in the other room until we get the countdown to go look for it. We chase after each other running into the living room trying to find the pickle first. It usually gets pretty physical with the tree almost getting knocked over. The person who finds the pickle first receives an extra present that year (which is usually me).

Favorite Holiday Traditions: Watching the movie “Christmas Vacation”; Favorite memory: going downstairs on Christmas morning to see what Santa brought us; Favorite holiday activities: spending time with the family and all of the food; Favorite holiday food: All of the desserts; Special holiday keepsakes: my tree ornaments I got each year while growing up

Thanksgiving has become me cooking for family and friends: turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, broccoli rice casserole, Amish egg noodles (because you can’t get enough carbs), dinner rolls, and of course pies. We don’t put up Christmas decorations until we’ve had our Thanksgiving turkey. I look forward to Candlelight Christmas Eve church service at 11:00 pm on Christmas Eve. When the service ends you can turn to your neighbor and wish them a Merry Christmas. Special holiday keepsakes: My mom started ordering University of Kansas Christmas ornaments for me years ago and it is fun to put them on the tree each year.

Favorite holiday activity: Seeing Christmas lights; Favorite holiday food: Sopa de Fideo and Cherry Delight

Although my family and I don’t celebrate Christmas due to differing cultural perspectives, I’ve always attempted to partake in the festivities if possible. I don’t have a lot of extended family that celebrates Christmas either, so during this time we try to eat items that are more festive-themed to get in the mood of the holidays and just spend quality time together. From my experience, you may always make new friends but your family are your eternal friends, so during this time it just feels more special.

I am very thankful for the upcoming holiday season, for this will be the first holiday that my daughter Tabitha doesn’t have to travel back down to Fort Worth, TX. She was diagnosed with cancer two years ago and each holiday had to be celebrated away from friends and family members. She just recently got a MIBG scan done back home in Wichita and her scans came back negative for cancer. Tabitha just celebrated her 15th birthday, and the good news came back an hour before we gathered for her birthday. So, she got to stand before all who attended and share the great news. Not a dry eye in the room! Always be thankful.

What makes holidays happy for me is the tradition of cooking up a feast with my mom. It’s also connecting with loved ones, spending time with family and creating memories together. We love slowing down. During the holidays it give us a chance to take a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life to relax, reflect and enjoy the moment.

Playing Santa for children with special physical and mental needs is my all-time favorite holiday tradition. I love seeing the smiles on their faces, not to mention the tears of joy in their parent’s eyes when they finally get the picture with Santa while their children are smiling!

I’m looking forward to spending time with family.

Memories of my childhood Christmases: On my mom’s side we are a big Sicilian family. Our holidays, especially Christmas, were always big, loud and festive. We had 40+ people talking, laughing, playing board and card games after dinner. One of my cousins would dress as Santa and we would each get a gift from the bag. My mom and her sister would get together after Thanksgiving and start making cookies and cannolis for family and friends - over 500 of each. And when we were growing up, we got to help which was always a blast as a kid. I miss those days, so getting excited for decorating as soon as I can makes it feel like I’m back with my family.

Safety and Fleet Coordinator, Lenexa-Construction

Obviously the one thing that makes me the happiest around this time of year is my sweet daughter Charlie! I LOVE being able to make so many memories with her and see the joy in her eyes and continue the excitement that my mom made for me when I was little. A holiday tradition we have every year is getting Chick-fil-A for an early dinner before it gets dark, then hopping in the Longview Lights line before it gets too long. Charlie sits up front with me (which she thinks is SO MUCH FUN!) We turn on Christmas music and eat our dinner. By the time we are done with dinner, it’s dark and the line starts moving, and we are able to look at and enjoy the lights!

What is going to make my holidays happy this year and for many years to come is that this will be the first one I spend with my son Miles. We are so excited to bring him into family traditions and to start making traditions of our own.

Marketing Manager, Lenexa-Construction

After the hustle of Thanksgiving dinners and events, and before the hustle of Christmas dinners and events, there comes a quiet day (usually Black Friday) when we put up the Christmas tree and take time to look at all the ornaments, remembering the people and places they came from. My favorite ornament is this celluloid Father Christmas. It was given to my dad when he was born in 1930. My dad always thought it was so cool that it was made of celluloid, the first synthetic plastic material, developed in the 1800s. Even though my dad is no longer with us, we take good care of Celluloid Santa!

Silvana Da Silva

Project Engineer, Lenexa-Construction

My favorite holiday tradition is watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade while my mom is cooking dinner and I am decorating the inside of her house while my brothers hang up the Christmas lights outside. It’s nice because we’re all together enjoying each other’s company. And at the end of the night, we’ll go downstairs and decorate the Christmas tree and decorate sugar cookies while watching “The Polar Express”.

Every year, my mom, my sister, our girls and I get together to bake all kinds of Christmas goodies! It’s a tradition we have done since before my girls were born and I cannot wait to continue this tradition with my grandbabies!

When our kids were ages 15, 13, and 10 we were expecting another little girl and had not told anyone. We waited until Christmas Eve and wrapped a picture of the ultrasound in a cute baby frame. We let our kids open one gift on Christmas Eve, so we gave that to them as the Christmas Eve gift. It was very exciting to see their reaction. The oldest child definitely caught on first and then on down the line. Our daughter was so excited because now she would have a little sister. It was such a sweet moment and our family talks about it every year.

We play Bingo on my mom’s side of the family, instead of buying gifts for everyone. We each bring a fun bingo prize to try and win.

The holidays make me happy since I was taught by my Dad all about exterior illumination in my early teens, and I have been hooked since. In high school, my Mom used to call me out of school to add more Christmas lights to the house. We had to do it while my dad was at work, because I tended to go a little overboard. He would love the look, but hate the fact that he usually was the one taking them down...and the power bill! Today I do the lighting on my own home. The only difference now is I have a 5-year-old daughter (Maeve) who LOVES to help me with this wild tradition, and really enjoys the outcome when we are finished. Creating forever lasting memories like these with Maeve are by far the best moments that make me happy during the holidays. You can’t put a price on that!

Growing up, our church was a winter wonderland, adorned with towering trees that seemed to touch the ceiling. I recall attending midnight mass, the air filled with the sweet scent of pine and the soft hum of carols. The church was aglow, and everyone seemed to have hope and joy. For me, a Christmas tree remains the quintessential symbol of the season. Its beauty evokes a sense of peace and wonder, carrying me back to simpler times, filled with joy and anticipation.

This year will be the first Christmas I’ll be celebrating without my dad Gary who passed away a few months ago. Although this thought is overwhelming, it also has allowed me to recall all the amazing Christmases we were blessed to celebrate together. Dad was the original Clark Griswald! Each year our family would make the journey to a Christmas tree farm out in the country in search of the biggest and best tree we could find. I will never forget the year we REALLY over did it and cut down the most ridiculously large tree you can imagine. Dad managed to cut it down with a little hand saw, and we got it tied to the truck.

We tried to pull the monstrosity through the door, and the tree branches ripped the doorknob completely off! Dad had to remove the door from the frame. Luckily, we had room to stand the tree up. We improvised and created a tree stand out of an old metal wash tub. Once the tree was secured in the wash tub, tied down to the walls, and decorated, what a sight it was!

A few days later, our two cats ran up the tree trunk, and the entire tree fell over onto the living room carpet, breaking many family heirloom ornaments.

When Christmas was over there was the task of how to get this tree out of the house. My Dad came walking in the front door with his chain saw running loud and proud! That is one Christmas we will never forget, and we’ve had lots of laughs as we remember it over the years.

Our top tradition is taking a family picture with Santa at Bass Pro Shop in Olathe every year. It’s amazing to see how much our family grows and continues to share the holiday with each other. My favorite memory from a past holiday is spending our first Christmas with my son who was born a couple weeks before a nice snowy Christmas in 2020.

When my daughter was little, she really liked to make “cut-out” cookies, so when she was five, we invited all her cousins over and we had a cookie party. We have continued to have a Christmas cookie party every year since, and this year will be the 19th year.

A holiday tradition we have is deep frying two turkeys and one “tur-duck-en” (turkey, duck, and chicken). We also always watch Christmas Vacation on Thanksgiving night.

Digital

My daughter and I started a tradition of silly Christmas cards together. We come up with a new theme every year (usually featuring our cat Biggie Smalls) and put little “easter eggs” from the year for people to find.

One thing I look forward to every year is going to through Christmas in the Park at Longview Lake. I have gone every single year since its inception when I was a child back in the mid-1980s. Even while being gone for college and military service, I have managed to not miss a single year. It’s a tradition that I have since been able to share with my wife and daughter.

Heather Richards-St. Clair

My wife Erin has always been obsessed with all things Christmas, but when she became a mother in 2006 she began a tradition of giving special Christmas ornaments symbolizing life events, travel, and hobbies to the girls, Ella and Chloe. As you can imagine, by the time the girls were 9 and 11, they had a whole tree dedicated to these mementos. I watched as Erin unwrapped every single ornament and explained the sentiment tied to it as the girls hung them one by one on the tree. I can’t put into words the way it made me feel the year they gave me my first ornament. With every passing year, the tree is the centerpiece of our holiday joy. We are now to the point where we need to buy a house with taller ceilings so we can buy a bigger tree! This tradition will continue to be our favorite, and most treasured annual opportunity to look back on the memories we have been so blessed to share as a family over the years.

Working Together Part 1

The Success of Story of P1 Service Operations and Preventative Maintenance Sales

The collaborative relationship between P1 Service Operations and Preventative Maintenance Sales is a cornerstone for success.

This article delves into that collaborative relationship. Stay tuned for “part 2” in a future issue, which will focus on how the project sales teams interact with Operations.

Working

Together for a Better All-Around Experience

According to sources at P1 Service, both the Maintenance Sales Teams and Project Sales Teams have achieved remarkable success over the past few years, consistently outperforming the sales goals, primarily due to their innovative internal strategies and commitment to collaboration.

Instead of waiting for equipment to fail and then responding to issues, the focus of preventative maintenance is on preventing equipment problems before they occur. This proactive approach ensures equipment and systems operate at optimal efficiency, which not only enhances performance but also significantly reduces energy costs and repairs.

The Preventative Maintenance Sales teams across all branches of P1 Service have experienced extraordinary success that has led to significant growth. Over the past five years, the maintenance base has more than doubled, a significant achievement attributed to the enhanced collaboration between service managers and sales teams.

This teamwork has streamlined processes, creating more accurate and clearer communication while allowing for reduced time investment.

For example, skilled technicians now accompany sales representatives to carry out surveys, which frees up valuable time for service managers, also

Overview of the Process

 Preventative Maintenance Sales Representatives work closely with Service Managers.

 Together, they conduct comprehensive facility surveys to assess customer needs, identify specific pain points, and formulate customized plans that address these challenges.

 Each plan is tailored to the specific requirements of the client’s operations in combination with the right financial solution.

 Once a plan is established, service managers are empowered to oversee implementation. They take full responsibility for executing the plan according to predetermined objectives, taking into consideration factors like time, cost, and required materials to ensure its success.

Skilled technicians now accompany sales reps to carry out surveys, which frees up valuable time for service managers, also ensuring more detailed equipment and facility evaluations.

HOLIDAY SAFETY TIPS

Happy Holidays from the P1 Safety Team! 2024 is shaping up to be another great year for safety indicators, but we are not done yet! Stay focused and finish strong as we welcome 2025 with that P1 World Class Safety Culture.

PREVENTING FIRES

If you’re using a real tree, water it daily to prevent drying out, and keep trees away from heat sources. Make sure artificial trees are labeled fire resistant.

Use proper extension cords for outdoor lights and avoid using indoor cords outdoors. Always inspect for frayed wiring before hanging anything up.

If using space heaters, try not to place anything closer than three feet in front of them.

Use surge protectors to protect devices when plugging in multiple decorations & always inspect them first before use.

SLIPS AND FALLS

Clear walkways of snow, ice, or wet leaves. Wear proper footwear when walking on icy & wet surfaces. Remember, never put your feet where your eyes haven’t been.

Whether putting a topping on the tree or lights on the house, use the same safe ladder practices at home that we do here at work.

MENTAL WELLNESS

TRAVEL

Lock all windows and doors when traveling. Check that door cameras are working properly or ask a trusted neighbor to keep an eye out while you’re away.

Plan ahead by checking weather conditions prior, and allow extra time for holiday traffic. Make sure your vehicle is in good condition for long trips.

If you indulge in any alcohol drinks, be sure to do so responsibly. Always have a designated driver and keep any alcohol out of reach of children.

SECURITY AND SHOPPING

Stay extra alert in parking lots when shopping – it IS the busiest time of year.

Be on the lookout for online scams! Shop on reputable sites and be wary of those “too good to be true” offers.

Secure valuables when shopping. Don’t leave bags or packages visible in your car; lock them in the trunk.

Holidays can bring pressure. Keep expectations realistic and focus on meaningful connections. The holidays can be difficult or lonely. Be sure to reach out to anyone who might have recently lost someone close to them, or may live too far away from family and are unable to travel home.
