Preamble
While Mathare residents contend with barriers such as limited economic prospects, gender discrimination and violence, the community is also deeply invested in using its own ingenuity to survive and find a pathway out of poverty. Individual innovations, women’s groups, community -based organization support networks, and youth activities are some of the many assets in Mathare. This suggest that any planning process should build upon and lift-up community assets, innovative strategies of resilience and local knowledge. Good Samaritan children's home is a Christian nongovernment, non-profit making organization established in 1991 by Ms. Mercy Mburu after noticing cry for help by children in the community. This goal was to champion children rights by giving them a conducive and enabling environment for them to live in. At Good Samaritan Children's Home, they strive to make a positive impact to the community no matter how small the magnitude. This report describes a new proposal spearheaded by NCBA, aimed at improving the lives and living conditions of Good Samaritan Children’s Home through a partnership between Maridadi Building Constructors and Triad Foundation.

The site is located in Mathare along Mau Mau Road. Mathare is bordered by two main highways of Juja Road to the south and Thika Road to the north, but access is poor within the settlements. Many pathways and roads do not have a safe and grade-separated space for pedestrians, and almost all Mathare residents must walk to obtain basic services.

CONTEXT Good Samaritan Children’s Home consist of 7 plots (21,22,23,24,25,63 & 64), 5 on the northern side of the Mau Mau Road and 2 on the south. Plot No. 63, has a temporary structure and Plot No. 64, has a permanent structure, currently being extended up to 5th floor. The Cows Zero Grazing Unit is on 5No. plots directly across the road from the home as shown on the map. NEMA & UNEP The River impacts a universal 30 meter riparian buffer which will have significant effects on all of the major informal settlements lying along the Mathare River.

“In the Mathare Valley alone, a riparian buffer would displace 20% of households or approximately 22,146 residents and would further destroy 1,116 structures, of which at least 6 are schools, 8 religious institutions, 3 markets, 31 latrine blocks and 43 water points.” Mathare Zonal Plan,2012.

The animal shelter will comprise of the zero grazing unit located at grade level and the poultry farm. Other support spaces include open utility spaces, animal feeds and tools store, changing area and two shops. Understanding the inherent risks posed by the river, the facility is designed as a make-shift swing space, built partly on the 15m riparian. However, the channel of the river has over the years been re-routed and its land reclaimed illegally to accommodate the informal settlements. This has greatly reduced the size of the buildable land. Therefore, we recommend the following:

1. Possible relocation of the animal shelter. 2. The land to be surveyed to understand soil structural composition and the extent of available buildable space. 3. An environmental report assessment from the NEMA consultant to advise on the way forward.

Sustainability The project applies the latest techniques for sustainable environmental design and construction to achieve the most energy and natural resource conserving facility of its kind within Mathare. (ie) adopting passive design strategies such as solar orientation, using locally made bricks, composting toilets, natural ventilation strategies, solar panels for electricity etc.
