FabYearBook 2011

The FabLab Network’s second year book, on our way to the future!

3

It is with pleasure that I am welcoming you to the second edition of the FabYearBook. The 2011 edition is bigger and more diverse than last year's first ever edition. Again the FabYearBook shows you some of the wonderful things that are being done, created and made in the global network of FabLabs. If you leaf through it you'll be struck by the wealth of ideas, color and inspiration. A big thank you to all who contributed their stories and examples. Every time I visit a Fablab I see the same basic thing: everybody, and I really mean everybody, who enters a FabLab leaves it again with a smile on their face. Convincing people of the value of FabLabs for their community is as simple as bringing them into a FabLab. There is nothing more empowering than walking into a FabLab with an idea, and leaving it with an object you made. Even if that object is nowhere similar to your idea, even if it not really works yet as you intended. The act of Making will make everybody smile. This second FabYearBook is hopefully another step in a yearly tradition of making that value, empowerment and sheer fun visible. Print this book, bind it in a cover you yourself designed and made in the FabLab, or use the one that Steven Gallagher designed and comes with the book. It's also with some feelings of guilt I welcome you to the FabYearBook 2011. It should have been published in February already, but I simply have been to busy to do it, and only too late started looking for help in finishing it. The reason this second edition is now ready, is because of the hard work and time spent by Susanne Welgraven, a student at the FabLab Arnhem. Everything that is in this edition is to her credit, everything that is missing is my mistake. Susanne, a very big thank you for all your work! You've been instrumental in making this edition happen.

FabLab Groningen Ever since the opening of the FabLab in Groningen (The Netherlands) in April 2010, a stream of activities was organized. These were made possible by a team of at first six volunteers the number growing to ten by the end of the year. The FabLab is part of “Het Paleis. Het Paleis Groningen is a cultural living and working complex in the former chemical laboratory of the University of Groningen. There are over a hundred creative companies housed in Het Paleis; artist studios, designers, musicians and writers. Every month, a cultural Sunday is organized. On such a day all parts of Het Paleis are open to the public for whom lectures, workshops and other cultural activities are organized. Naturally the FabLab participates by showing off its facility and demonstrating the various machines. Over the year this has generated a lot of positive publicity. The last few months the FabLab open hours experienced a significant increase of machine usage, during which the registration of FabMoments. Their value and content has been a major point of attention, as well as their traceability, since these are all core elements of the FabLab philosophy. From these directives the concept of a new website has been created on which all FabMoments can easily be published and ranked, but also traced by subject matter, machine or material. The new website will be launched in February 2011. Through the year the FabLab was also active in a myriad of interesting activities. For example, November 30th, the FabLab organized a gathering featuring a live stream of the TEDx event in Amsterdam. Other network events and innovation activities were furthermore organized together with Syntens. Lastly the FabLab Groningen has bonded with the Bremen, an intensive corporation is developed in order to establish a FabLab.

Education The value of the FabLab in educational fields of technology, art, design, mathematics, materials etc. has been proven time after time and was experienced on many occasions. Since the opening of the FabLab several workshops were successfully organized and students kept finding their way to the FabLab afterwards. This also showed that girls are particularly interested in the use of the machines and digital design for their projects. This also indicates that the FabLab may play an important role in recruiting girls for scientific and technological studies. Furthermore, thanks to the global character of the FabLab (worldwide open source), international projects can easily be organized. Together with Science LinX FabLab Groningen organized workshops for Technasium schools (www.technasium.nl) (the science center for the beta faculty of the University of Groningen, www.sciencelinx.nl). Science LinX thus became a close partner of the FabLab within the University. Workshops were conceived on making and programming robots (artificial intelligence), the design and creation of mechanical legs, following the example of Theo Jansen (Life Science Technologies) and a masterclass on the beauty of mathematics by Prof. Dr. Jaap Top. Aside from these workshops, students have been coming to the FabLab to obtain 3D-prints and laser cutting parts for the projects on which work in school. For the school of Art and Design (Minerva) a series of papercraft lessons were given during which students of Interior Design created various scale models of a designated building. This fired up more discussions of possible cooperation to be developed between the FabLab and Minerva. Following talks with teachers of Technasium schools, the potential role of the FabLab in schools has evidently been recognized. Demonstrations with a Makerbot 3D-printer showed the applicability of such open source machinery in an educational environment. Its open design inspires children in understanding digitally controlled

machinery and building prototypes. Next to this, the Makerbot can be used within the school to directly produce digitally designed objects. All these activities resulted in increased social interaction and structural collaboration between the Technasium schools and the FabLab.

Papercraft With Google SketchUp, 3D models can be created for ultimately producing a physical version using papercraft techniques. Roland Nikolic worked towards a protocol to combine FabLab machines with this technique. A model, e.g. building, can be drawn in SketchUp and digitally unfolded in Pepakura Designer. In Pepakura Designer the unfolded model can be reworked into a design that can be exported as a bitmap file (*.BMP) and Encapsulated Postscript Format (*.EPS). The Bitmap serves as a full color printing file and the other as a path for the laser cutter. Markers are added to the bitmap for aiding in positioning the printout in the laser cutter. On request of the architectural office Onix, Roland Nikolic created a papercraft model of a new building, intended as a gift to prospective buyers. The design of the building was drawn in SketchUp and textures of the house were added based on stock photographs, partly taken on site. The model was imported to Pepakura Designer and unfolded. After all necessary edits, the file was exported as a Bitmap and a EPS file. The design was printed on 250 grams A3 paper and cut using the laser cutter. The good fun of folding and gluing is reserved for the future owners of the house.

Ladies LinX Molecules as jewelry. One Friday several Dutch and South African girls met with female scientists during a speed date Christmas dinner. This dinner was part of the ‘Ladies LinX X-Mas Night’ at Science LinX, the science center of the beta faculty of the University of Groningen. In the afternoon the girls digitally designed moleculebased jewelry using chemical modeling software. The odd molecules were converted to *.STL format for printing with the Z-Corp 3D printer. This event resulted in an inspiring and unexpected collection of wearable molecules. Strange yet lovely.

OB ITU A RY SIM ONE SCHWE IKE RT, INTIA TOR OF FA B LA B LU ZE RN Prof. Dr. Simone Schweikert, director of the interdisciplinary research and study program Creative Living Lab "CreaLab" at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts, Lucerne and initiator of FabLab Luzern, died on 30.01.2011 aged 43 after a severe illness.

1

"Please excuse this long text, I cannot free up my mind for short sentences" Simone wrote to a publisher in early 2005, shortly before her father died. This sentence is characteristic for Simone's view of the world – a world that is open, complex and diverse. Simone has left her marks on so many projects, such as making publicly available her father's extensive collection of first German translations of famous works of literature, founding the first Fab Lab in Switzerland in Lucerne, or implementing a regional innovation strategy in Central Switzerland. She was one of the driving forces behind innovating learning and teaching at university level, studying problems of inter- and transdisciplinary learning. Simone was known and recognized for her innovative thinking well beyond Switzerland. In summer 2008 Simone Schweikert got seriously ill with cancer; she bravely fought this condition while having to be off work repeatedly. Only three weeks before her death she was leading important meetings despite being marked by her illness. Nevertheless she was expressively, almost stubbornly confident to be able to win over the disease. She wasn't granted this victory.

environment in order to create shared learning goals and to discover their individual and collective learning styles. Simone started a number of projects within CreaLab to achieve this. The FabLab as the first Swiss node in an international network enables prototyping and critical making. The project "TINA" aims to develop new IT tools supporting innovation in a network of actors in "Living Labs", and the project "Meet2Create" strives to develop a concept comprising both infrastructure and service measures to support creativity and innovation in meetings and workshops. Simone's work ethic was enthusing and her ability to think in synergies was impressive. We admired her when she was looking into the future with great optimism, despite all difficulties. Simone had the habit of asking her colleagues what they would want to convey to the world. She also was full of faith that with a team of five she could change the world. As her friends and colleagues both from work and from her world-spanning network we are upset by her early death and we shall hold dear her memories. Her achievements, particularly the FabLab Lucerne and the Interdisciplinary Research and Study Program CreaLab at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Lucerne shall keep her memories alive. Simone is survived by her husband Giorgio Buzzi di Marco and her daughter, Chiara Annik, and son, Paolo Leon.

3 Soccer nets A group of approximately twelve community kids who often played in the street outside the Lab came up with the idea of making their own soccer nets. A simple space frame concept design was used where parts were cut on the torchmate router as well as the table saw, with bevels and angles included to help assembly. Afterwards is was just a matter of connecting it together. We used a durable netting bought at the local fabric shop and stapled it onto the frame. It only takes two people to construct one net (including cutting) at approximately 45 minutes. With twelve willing hands, we could really turn these out. We have kept a set of the nets at the Fablab for kids to use whenever they want to play soccer. So far they have held up really well, and can support an individual sitting on the cross bar.

Sessile Drop Tester Water repellency is a major problem for soils. The best method for quantifying the magnitude of repellency is by measuring the angle between the water droplet and a layer of ordinary sand. By Frits Hoff, manager of FabLab Zuid-Limburg, based in Maastricht, the Netherlands History and finance In 2007 the first plans for a FabLab in the southern part of the Netherlands were made by Harry Fekkers, Gene Bertrand and others. Due to big chances in funding the plan stopped unfortunately. January 2009 Frits Hoff started to develop plans for a FabLab in Maastricht. With the help of the first group and others more and more organisations got interested. Funding had become even harder because of the financial crisis. But in August 2010 the European Union decided to finance the collaboration between FabLab Leuven (Belgium) and FabLab Zuid-Limburg (Maastricht) in a substantial way. And there was also money to develop a FabLab in Hasselt / Genk and one in !"#$%&'(#)*+(*,&#-./*#(($($*0&*1"#$*234*5&1"#6#5() From August to December we tried to find cofinance but only a small amount of money was received. Time to stop talking and to show the region, the politics and the companies what a FabLab is about. We hired a shop which was empty for several years (dirty but cheap), found second hand furniture and computers and hired a lasercutter. A new FabLab was born!

Machines, PR and people Most important are the people. If you don't have money you need to find even more a lot of volunteers who are willing to work several hours a week. And we found a team of really nice people. Len Dumont developed a website in Drupal, www.fablabzuidlimburg.nl . With FabTweets (Twitter), FabShots (pictures on Flickr for our FabMoments, made by our photocamera with Eye-Fi SD-card), FabLog, Newsletter, Appointy reservation tool, Forum and a Wiki for all details (Mediawiki). Len also designed a flyer and a 3D-business card. Beside Twitter we also use LinkedIn as social media. After a lot of research, supported by Joost Geraets and others, we decided which machines we would like to use. The lasercutter is from LionLasers, made in China with specifications of LionLasers. The LG600 is much cheaper as the common brands and has a 60W laser. The software Lasercutter 5.3 is different but after a while you can do the same as with the expensive lasercutters. The Coreldraw add-on is nice. One of the reasons to choose LionLasers is that they collaborate with a Dutch group developing an open source driver.

A RepMan 3D-printer was donated but unfortunately it was to much work to make it work. Now it is a nice example of the short but fast history of self-made 3D-printers. Protospace, FabLab Utrecht, build an Ultimaker 3D-printer for us. Good printer and very fast. Also Protospace build the Mantis, 3D-cutter. Small but very nice for building electronic motherboards. A second hand Roland GX-24 vinylcutter was bought with a lot of material. And of cause the usual tools for wood, metal and electronics. Medio January 2011 the New Year's reception of FabLab.nl was the informal opening of the FabLab with almost 50 visitors and an excellent atmosphere.

Activities Each Tuesday it is open day, everybody can use the machines for free. Already in a few weeks a lot of people come to work and get support in developing a product. Not easy when you are still testing all materials, software and different versions. Floris Hoff and Joost Geraets are also developing FabSheets (manuals). On other days more and more people come to see what a FabLab can do for them or their organisations. Inventors, architects, product designers, event consultants etc. You really need to be innovative and do a lot of research to find solutions. More and more products are being made by us (or themselves) so we can earn a little bit of money. !"#$%&'($)"*+,-./"0$,%"$#1"2%,'3"451/5."67-)%-185%9"#3'"$%:31-'5/"+0";&433&<1.<";1"$1.0"$15" weekend 20 people (a lot of father /son combinations, between 6 and 60 years) made their own printer and at Sunday evening indeed 10 printers were ready. It was really community work with the support of the inventors, Josef Prusa and Kliment Yanev, who have been teaching the whole weekend. See this nice movie http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=qq7roeoTM9g The training in design software Rhino (teacher Ronald Meijs) and Blender (teacher Bram de Vries) will start soon. Also the wor&'($)"*=,-./"0$,%"$#1">.8-?3&5%"67-)%-185%9"@853A(5%"B%-&"/5"=%,-C1D"#-.." start as soon as we have enough interested people. We decided not to organise introduction courses in general but specialised for each machine. After 2 hours you should be able to work with that machine. For schools we develop now a special programme. This year a lot of FabLabs in the Netherlands are working on an educational program. We want to use Chamilo, a website for distance education, like Moodle but easier to learn. And of cause open source. We will not start a mobile FabLab to visit the schools, in a truck there is not enough space and it is cold in winter. Instead we will hire a van and demonstrate the machines in a classroom. Last but not least we are organising lunchmeetings with experts like Alex Schraub for fashion, Jan Borchers with intelligent fashion, Dries Verbruggen with printing ceramics etc. with kind regards, Frits Hoff
