Preface

As Dean of the College of Architecture and Urban Planning, and representing the host institution, I would like to welcome you to the proceedings of the 15th Computer-Aided Architectural Design Futures (CAAD Futures), held at Tongji University.

Rational considerations and methodologies in the architectural design process first came to the attention of Chinese architects in the early 1980s after Jizhong Feng of Tongji University translated J¨ urgen Joedicke’s book Angewandte Entwurfsmethodik f¨ ur Architekten (“Applied Design Methods for Architects”). Its systematic and numerical views served as a foundation for computer-aided architectural design (CAAD) in China. With the impact of the booming global economy, Chinese architects and educators today have a much closer relationship with the international architectural society. Having already initiated many collaborations, Chinese practitioners, researchers, and educators rigorously and ambitiously keep up to date with international CAAD developments. Nowadays, there are many international AEC teams in China, running local projects successfully using the accumulated research and development experience gained in CAAD. Within this vast field of practice, these global teams encounter a number of challenges regarding local materialization during the realization of these projects. Many of these challenges in China summon the most sophisticated R&D in CAAD worldwide.

Among these challenges, some important ones relate to the ideal of data standardization. Within the process of realizing buildings from schematic design to project management, led by various teams from all over the world, the need to understand each other and speak the same “language” is essential in order to exchange information between different platforms in different phases. The other set of challenges relates to the specifics of any given project: Every project has its unique properties based on its locality, such as geographic position, environment, or even users’ identity and culture, which differentiates the project from others.

This coexistence of challenges from two sides embodies the relationship between globalization and localization, which is the exact domain of current developments in CAAD. Thus, the theme of “Global Design and Local Materialization” became the focus of this conference.

The 15th meeting of CAAD Futures held in Shanghai, China, provided a forum for the presentation and discussion of a cross-section of international research and development in CAAD. These proceedings contain 35 papers selected out of 78 submissions from 19 countries and regions, which are grouped under the following five topics: – Digital Aids to Design Creativity, Concepts and Strategies – Digital Fabrication and Local Materialization – Human–Computer Interaction, User Participation, and Collaborative Design

– Modeling and Simulation – Shape and Form Studies Each submitted paper was reviewed by three referees from an international panel of referees appointed for this conference and was further assessed before a ďŹ nal decision was made.
