How is our contemporary social behaviour influenced by technology and fashion? How is public space concieved in a society ruled by internet? How do we assume our social roles in a globalized world? This project is based on Georg Simmel’s text “The Metropolis and mental life”, assuming the analysis of the consequences of the overwhelming contemporary lifestyle on the human psyche. One of the next big challanges of humanity is the design of global cities in which the necessity of a public and a private joy has to be figured out. An “over-connected” social structure forces an incessant lifestyle, where the real and the virtual space is difficult to distinguish in our mind. EGO-ZENTRVM wants to offer a sanctuary inspired by the roman baths. For this commitement the Vicente Calderón football stadium in Madrid next to the Manzanares River is renovated..

An intersection-space among two worlds: nature and the city. A gap immersed in a natural world with a wide farming tradition in the middle of a changing city. Located in a strategic place and designed to become what it is: a neuralgic center in the north of Spain. These intrinsic circumstances of the pre-existence generate the entire project: An urban and territorial laboratory transforming the actual “Mercado de ganados” into a “FarmLab”. This new concept of an urban-farm inhabits a new dweller: “the Transfarmer”.

Team members: Nieves Calvo Lopez Pablo Wegmann

portfolio.indd 35

A human being between two worlds coming from diverse urban collectivities and different sectors that becomes the new productive engine of the city. These conditions of the new user make it possible to create a new productive network on different scales and an alternative system which requires a transverse organization where knowledge of very different departments collaborate. The farmer of the XXI century, the transfarmer, is a being that also inhabits and produces in the third space; the digital space. For this reason, the created knowledge and productive network gets improved and expanded into an unlimited consumption and production. In addition, this project develops the optimization of the programmatic organization system of the building creating primarily a platform that makes an infinite type of interactions complemented with instant spaces possible. All this allows for innovative ways of understanding the production concept in an urban environment and its complexity when implementing it in its social fabric.

The italian Instituo Europeo di Design will built a new Innovation Lab in Madrid. The main idea behind this project is a concern about the new ways of teaching and learning in the Universities in the XXI century. Pretending to put together real business projects, design students and a high-tech equipment is probably the key to the success of this ambicious project. An old factory building is the space where Fab. Lab, Coworking, Service-Design Center and Restaurant will inspire young designers, entrepreneurs and companies to collaborate. in diffenrent projects.

Public space. A territory of nobody and everybody at the same time. The stage where social roles and the interaction, the essence of humanity, takes place. Who owns the public space of our cities? Who takes the decisions about the use and the rules? Who can take advantage of the metropolitan atmosphere? This project is a anaysis of the management and the ownership of the public spaces of our cities and a reflection on the social roles in the metropolitan spaces. The Spanish Plaza de EspaĂąa in Madrid is the starting point for this commitment. Its privileged location in the center of the capital puts it in the spotlight of the citizens and the local government. Several monumental and historical buildings around the plaza are abandoned since years and no iniciative seems to aim to solve the situation.

Urban planning in Nacka, Stockholm. The Europan Competition offers the transformation of an industrial territory next to a natural reserve into a housing complex. This proposal studies the flora and fauna’s patrimony and comes to the conclusion of a complex colonization structure of the whole territory. It is an ambitious project with the aim to recover and enhance the biodiversity of the remarkable natural environment. Through the analysis of different soils and microclimates the final strategy proposed in this project is a finger-plan that colonizes the whole island connecting the transversal riversides through programmatic paths. Each finger provides different programs according to the necessities of every location and hosts a specific microclimate. This way, the island recovers its biodiversity and a sustainable urban planification awards an enhanced identity. Opengap launched a competition asking for an Inspirational Hotel. This project is committed to the contemporary geopolitical context and handles with two principal aspects; the refugees and the(ir) women. How could architects help people turn back to their homes, once the situation is cleared and safe. Sociological studies show that people always turn back to their roots, and so tries this project to help to establish a new society based on the women’s active participation and reconstruction of their villages. A new role-sructure empowering women is the starting point of this project. The art and the craftwork is the inspiration and the hope of a new social structure ensuring equality and freedom.

Urban speculation has marked a very large territory in Spain, specially in the capital, Madrid. Huge residencial projects started their rise in the outskirts of the metropolitan area but some never got finished, becoming archeological urban ruins. Instead of demolishing the invested energy this project takes advantage of the preexisting infrastucture and transforms the abandoned territory into a natural park and a botanical garden. The new vegetal area is one of the new Gates to the city, located next to one of the principal highways. The grown trees are used to be planted in the rest of the capital while a new public space is created for the inhabitants of the new town offering a recreational refuge.

The Official Architects’ Association of Madrid COAM organized in collaboration Mahou an open competition for a new headquarter in the center of Madrid. A restoration of an historical building should host a small beer-factory, a tapas-bar typical for Madrid and an enternaining museum of the history of the company. An inspirational refuge will be created in the inside respecting the existing building and just adding some “plug-ins”. There are two principal aspects in this project for creating a sanctuary of joy. In first place, the interior patio will be provided with an ecological and social structure made of rings and cables. Around this hanging structure is growing a vegetal skin creating an oasis in the inside f the building. And the second point is the design of multifunctional interactiv modules that organize the space in different station applicable to the museum and the bar. Also the citizens can interact with the buildings inside and outside through their smartphones. Reservations, news and availability of the modules will be announced on the interactiv screen on the top of the inflatable ring on the rooftop. Team members: Mi5VR

The anual competition for students raised a very interesting and seducing project in “El Matadero” (Madrid). This ancient slaughterhouse is nowadays one of the most popular and successful cultural centers of the capital. One empty ship was the topic of the competition and the challenge was to create a hostel for artists. Artists that come to this cultural center to exhibit their creations. This project keeps the complete structure and the facade, creating an empty space filled with a forest of columns. From this structural columns are hanging individual habitational modules. Floating “eggs” fill the space above connected with hanging platforms. The “egg” is a symbol of the meditational and transcendental character of Art, and how the invited artist can turn back to his private atmosphere after showing his deepest thoughts through his artistic works. Below this transcendental atmosphere a public exhibition space penetrates the building, pretending to continue the riverside of El Manzanares river next to this ground. Visitors can acced to the space interacting with the artists. Team members: Nieves Calvo López Pablo Wegmann

The German School in Madrid moved to a new building in 2015. GrĂźntuch-Ernst Architects won the international competition for this project and executed it with ilusion. The Berlin office needed bilingual architects being able to work between two governmental institutions as well as negotiating with the Spanish construction company and the German architects. This educational complex hosts more than 1500 pupils, and I was one of those many years ago, so it was specially for me a very exciting experience being part of the team that built the new Deutsche Schule Madrid.
