The Castle In 1931, John Ogden finished constructing his family's home on 20 acres in Buckhead. The newly formed Pace Academy acquired the Ogden property in 1958, and the home, now Kirkpatrick Hall, served as the school’s first classroom building. It now houses Pace’s administrative offices.
WELCOME TO PACE ACADEMY… COME ON IN! Most Atlantans associate Pace Academy with Kirkpatrick Hall, our iconic “Castle” with its arched entryway, towering turrets and leaded windows. Pace first found its home within this beloved building’s granite walls, but our current footprint extends far beyond what fronts W. Paces Ferry Road. From the rear of the Castle, you’ll gaze out over the 34 acres of gardens, fields and facilities that make up our main campus. Two satellite athletic complexes on 32 acres are home to our student-athletes and their spirited fans. There’s simply too much to see in one visit, so what follows is an inside look at the spaces that make Pace.
The Playground Command a pirate ship, fly through the sky on a swing or bar, shoot some hoops or become a foursquare champion—anything is possible on the Lower School playground!
Design Thinking In our Lower School Design Thinking lab, imagination reigns supreme. Students work collaboratively to tackle challenges, using items in our prototyping center to design practical solutions to complex problems. With a focus on teamwork, empathy, resilience and confidence, this is creative problem solving at its best.
THE LO W E R S C H OOL THE RANDALL HOUSE, a former family home, houses our Lower School. Renovations in 2007 added outdoor learning space for PreFirst students as well as new classrooms. The building’s cafeteria, a frequent gathering place, serves our 375 Lower School students as well as the teachers, parents, grandparents and friends who join them for lunch every day.
Middle School Arts Expansion of our Middle School arts program in 2014 demanded additional visual-arts space. Housed in our Inman Center, adjacent to the Middle School, students now paint, draw, sculpt and design in a Middle School art suite, complete with two large classrooms, gallery space, a supply room and a kiln.
THE GARCIA FA M I LY M I D D L E S C HOOL COMPLETED IN 2004, the Garcia Family Middle School’s 57,000 square feet includes 25 classrooms and labs, faculty offices, a computer lab, and studio space for our Middle and Upper School strings students. Each grade enjoys its own floor, atop which sits Knights Hall, an assembly space where Middle School students gather each morning for announcements and a daily, student-led “Inspirational Moment.”
The Student Commons The 1,500-square-foot Seaman Family Student Commons allows Upper School students to gather for small-group meetings and to socialize and study during free periods. Its floor-to-ceiling windows overlook the Pace Gardens, and doors provide easy access to the heart of campus. Visit during NCAA March Madness and you just might find students cheering as their favorite teams play on the room’s TV monitors.
The Woodruff Library Harry Potter fans have likened the Woodruff Library to a space straight out of Hogwarts. Our information headquarters’ stately reading room serves as a place for quiet study or consultations with our expert librarians, while movable shelving, classrooms and open spaces make the library’s second floor the perfect spot for collaborative work. Ask our students about Mindfulness Mondays, puzzle challenges and our Bookmobile.
T H E A R T H U R M. B L A N K F A M I LY UPPE R SCHOOL OUR UPPER SCHOOL students call the 75,000-square-foot Arthur M. Blank Family Upper School home. The state-of-the-art building opened in 2014 and includes the Woodruff Library, student common areas, state-of-the-art classrooms and labs, our Academic Resource Center, deans’ offices and a college-counseling suite.
The Theatre Excellence in the arts has long been a point of pride for our community, and we love inviting the guests of students in all divisions to concerts and productions in our theatre. The 600-seat auditorium includes an orchestra pit and a fly system, plays host to performances and events throughout the year and serves as a gathering space during Upper School assemblies.
THE F I N E AR TS CENTER CONSTRUCTED IN 1990, our Fine Arts Center boasts a painting and drawing studio; classrooms for ceramics, sculpture, chorus, band and drama; a traditional darkroom; a computer lab for digital photography, graphic design and yearbook; a stagecraft workshop; exhibit and event space; and a stateof-the-art theatre.
Tennis Courts & Lower Practice Fields Noonan Upper Field and our tennis center sit high atop “Pace Mountain,” at the rear of our campus. Knights fans traveling up the hill to take in a tennis match will overlook four hard courts and enjoy a panoramic view of our lower practice field and the Pace campus.
The Natatorium Adjacent to the Garcia Family Middle School, our natatorium is home to the AquaKnights, our swimming, diving and water polo teams. Lower and Middle School students also use the state-of-the-art facility during physical-education classes.
Boyd Gym There’s something historic about Boyd Gymnasium. Built in 1966, its architecture recalls Pace’s early days and the generations of student-athletes who competed on its court. We’ve updated the space several times since its construction, and today, “Boyd” hosts games and practices, physical-education classes and camps. It also houses our fitness center and weight room, Campus Store, Summer Programs office and clinic.
Inman Center The Knights of the Round Table, our student spirit club, frequently leads boisterous crowds during home sporting events in the Inman Center. Constructed in 2000, the facility houses a multipurpose court and indoor track, athletics offices, locker rooms, spaces for socializing, our snack bar, and the Middle and Upper School cafeteria.
M A I N C AM P U S AT H L E T I C FAC I L I T I E S THERE’S NEVER a shortage of athletic activity on our campus. With two gymnasiums, a natatorium, an indoor track, gymnastics and wrestling facilities, a climbing wall, tennis courts, practice fields, and a fitness center and weight room, our student-athletes have everything they need to compete at the highest levels.
Walsh Field Since its opening in 2014, Walsh Field has welcomed Knights fans for home football games, state-playoff soccer matches and thrilling lacrosse victories. The facility includes a state-of-the-art stadium with bleacher seating, a FIFA-regulation grass field and a Beynon track.
Charlie Owens Field Knights fans go out to the ballgame at Charlie Owens Field, a baseball facility within Pace Academy Athletics Complex. One of our favorite pastimes is listening as Pre-First students sing The Star Spangled Banner to kick off a varsity game each season.
OU R S AT E L L I T E AT H L E T I C FA C I L I T I E S BECAUSE MORE than 85 percent of our Middle and Upper School students wear Knights jerseys, Pace’s footprint expanded in 2005 to include two satellite athletic facilities. Our Warren Road softball complex is located 3 miles from our main campus, and Pace Academy Athletics Complex on Riverview Road is an easy 6-mile drive away. The complex includes Charlie Owens Field, Walsh Field, a track, a multipurpose practice field, locker rooms, an athletic training room and a snack bar.
