Coaching Staff
Dave Carty Head Coach Fifth Season
Dave Carty enters his fifth season at Pace with a 22-33 career record at Pace. He is just the 4th head lacrosse coach in the program’s 22-year history. During his four seasons at Pace, Carty has coached three All-American players. Coach Carty was most recently the offensive coordinator and academic advisor for the lacrosse program at West Point Prep in Fort Monmouth, NJ. Prior to that, Carty was the head coach and a senior admissions counselor at Centenary College in Hackettstown, NJ. Hired in 2001, Coach Carty posted the best single season record in school history in 2002, as well as the best two-year record while earning consecutive ECAC tournament berths. Prior to Centenary, Carty was an assistant coach at Fairleigh Dickinson from 1995 until he assumed the head coaching position in 2000. After posting a 25-8 record for his two seasons at the helm of the FDU program, Carty captured the 2001 ECAC Metro Championsip, posting a 13-4 regular season record. Coach Carty also spent a year on the sidelines at Kean College in Union, NJ in 1995. Carty implemented a new defensive scheme in his first year in the position as Kean finished the regular season at 12-2 while also capturing the ECAC Metro Championship. Coach Carty is currently on the USILA Division Two ranking Committee and the USILA All-American Committee. Carty graduated from Utica College of Syracuse University with a B.A. in History in 1993. He later earned his Masters in History from Fairleigh Dickinson in 1999. He currently resides in Sparta, NJ.
Dennis Butler
Assistant Coach Defensive Coordinator First Season Dennis Butler enters his first season with the Setters at the helm of the defense. Butler finished his career as a goalie at Ithaca College in 2007 where he was a four-time 1st Team All Empire-8 Conference selection as well as Rookie of the Year in 2004. Butler was also named to the USILA All-American List three times as well as being ranked 5th all-time in saves in Division III. A graduate of Pleasantville High School, Butler currently resides in Pleasantville, NY and is pursuing his Master’s Degree at Pace.
Rob Cornetta Assistant Coach Second Season
Rob Cornetta returns to the Setters sidelines following a stellar four-year career as a member of the Pace University Men’s Lacrosse team. This season, Cornetta will work with the faceoff unit and attack, while also running the substitution box. As a senior, he finished second on the team in goals with 27 and third in points, netting 35. For his career, he totaled 57 goals, 16 assists for 73 points, tallying 11 man-up goals in his four years. He ranks 23rd in school history in points. 2009 Season Preview SCHEDULE The Pace University men’s lacrosse team will look to earn a trip back to the Northeast-10 Conference this season after just missing clinching a birth last season. The men will have to go up against a very challenging schedule this season that includes five games against teams who are ranked in the top-10 in the country. Some of the nationally ranked teams Pace will be competing against are out-of-conference foes Dowling, Molloy and Mercyhurst, and NE-10 powerhouses Merrimack and Le Moyne. The two games of interest that Pace fans should circle on their schedule is the outof-conference matchup against Mercyhurst, and the game against the NE-10 defending champion, Le Moyne Dolphins. The Mercyhurst game is one of interest because this will be the first time Pace will play the Lakers, and Mercyhurst finished the year ranked 5th in the country last season. The Le Moyne game, which will be at home this season, will be a good test for the Setters as Le Moyne has won three of the last five NCAA Division II national titles, and they finished last season as the #1 team in the country. ATTACK Pace will have to deal with the losses of two of their top four scorers from last season. The Setters offense will be led by two upperclassmen this season in Junior James Hammel, and Senior T.J. Urban. Hammel will look to improve from an excellent sophomore season as he was second on the team in goals with 22, and second in points as well with 30. Urban will enter his senior season being ranked ninth all-time at Pace in career assists with 51. Urban was also ranked 43rd in the nation in assists per game last season with 1.07. Urban will look to build on those numbers this season as he will have plenty of young talent to dish it off to. Some of the young guns that will look to contribute right away to the Setters offense are Brian Goodwine, Nicholas Pellerito, Brendan Chillemi, and Kristoffer Carseni.
MIDFIELD The Setters will have to depend on a mixture of experience and youth at midfield this season. The man who will lead the Setters midfield this season is Senior Jake Sheppard. Sheppard was third on the team in goals last season with 20, and finished fourth in points with 24. Junior Joe Clark returns to the midfield after totaling 12 points last season. Clark finished fifth on the team with nine goals, while also contributing 29 ground balls, good for second on the team. Sophomore Joe Arlotta will also provide some depth at midfield this season for Pace. The Setters brought in some freshman that will contribute to some key aspect of the midfield. Freshman John Thorp will start as the long stick midfielder, and Marc Malecki was also brought in to help with face-offs as Pace struggled in that category last season. DEFENSE The Pace defense will be led by sophomore Oliver Musso who returns as the lone experienced defensemen after collecting 12 groundballs last season. The rest of the Setter defense is very young as freshman will be stepping in, and contributing right away. Peter Nieporent and Andrew Hrabsky will be two of those freshmen who will be getting time of the field this season. GOALKEEPERS The young Setters defense will get a boost from one of the best goalies in the nation last season in Senior Timothy Matheis. Matheis finished last season ranked 9th in the NCAA in GAA with 9.33, and he was also ranked 7th in the NCAA in save percentage at .587. Matheis has a career record of 16-20 at Pace with a 9.51 career GAA. Matheis will be backed up in net this season by sophomore Greg Branca, along with freshman Kevin Grady.
