Hello Readers, Today is the day that our fierce and provocative and spiritual leader, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was gun down as he walked on the balcony of the Lorraine hotel in Memphis, Tennessee. It was a day we shall all always remember because it was the day that turned backward in spite of all the acts by government which were imposed as a jester to appease the Black brothers and sisters because they had succeeded in taken Dr. King’s flesh but never his spirit. It is because of his spirit that we remember today. Dr. King’s spirit still speaks to us today as it did when he said what the prophet Amos said, “Let Justice run down like waters and righteousness as a mighty stream.” Today, more than ever before we need the spirit of Dr. King who stood in the face of opposition to speak truth to powers that be and called things that were not as those they were in his “I Have A Dream” speech. Prophetically he spoke and today we have seen much of it come to pass but we still have a long way to go. With God all things are

EDITORIAL/OPINION Can We Make It to the ‘Promise Land?’ By Ron Daniels April 4 marks the 46th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on a balcony in Memphis. Black America and people of goodwill in the nation and the world were stricken by grief, frustration and anger at the murder of this great man of justice and peace. Indeed, rebellions erupted in urban centers across the nation by people who could not fathom how an apostle of nonviolence could be struck down so viciously and violently. It was clear that America was at yet another crossroad in the quest to achieve racial, economic and social justice. Despite constant death threats, Dr. King never flinched in his determination that this nation should be made to live up to its creed. The night before he was murdered, he reluctantly mounted the podium at the Mason Temple Church in Memphis and seemed to have a premonition of his impending demise. Yet, he proclaimed that he was not afraid dying. In the most memorable part of his oration he took the audience to the “mountaintop” with him and declared that he had “seen the promised land.” Sensing that his life would be cut short he said, “I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the Promised Land.” As we reflect on King’s courage and optimism in the shadow of death, the question is: Can we make it to the Promised Land? Clearly Dr. King was speaking to the long suffering sons and daughters of Africa in America when he referenced “we as a people.” But given his fervent belief in the promise of the Declaration of Independence and Constitution, there is little doubt that he also believed that one day America as a nation must arrive at the Promised Land. Dr. King also knew that for the “promise” to be realized Black people and people of good will in the “beloved community” would have to struggle to achieve its fulfillment. There would be trials and tribulations because there

were forces deeply committed to restricting economic and political democracy to an elite “few” to the exclusion of the “many” in this society. As Dr. King peered over into the Promised Land, he saw a nation that embraced his concept of an Economic Bill of Rights modeled after Franklin D. Roosevelt’s “Four Freedoms,” where every human being would have a decent standard of living: a land where no-one would lack for a job with a living wage or guaranteed annual income, quality affordable housing, healthcare and education. To get to the Promised Land, Dr. King was preparing a Poor People’s Campaign to galvanize the “many” to struggle for an Economic Bill of Rights even in the face of the fierce resistance of the “few” at the commanding heights of capital and finance. To get to the Promised Land, Dr. King also warned that the people, those who aspired to create the change must themselves undergo a change, a personal “revolution” that would translate into creating a just and humane society. Hence he proclaimed, “I am convinced that if we are to get on the right side of the world revolution, we as a nation must undergo a radical revolution of values. We must rapidly begin the shift from a ‘thing-oriented’ society to a ‘person-oriented’ society. When machines and computers, profit motives and property rights are considered more important than people, the giant triplets of racism, materialism and militarism are incapable of being conquered.” The people must create a “moral movement” to get to the Promised Land and that movement cannot countenance a system incompatible with “person-oriented” values. Therefore, those who would get to the Promised Land must challenge and change systems of oppression and exploitation; they must advance a politics of social transformation. As Dr. King put it, “True compassion is more than flinging a coin to a beggar; it comes to see that the edifice which produces beggars needs restructuring.” As we witness the calculated, mean-spirited assault on Blacks, labor, women and poor and working people by rightwing extremists, the explosive growth in mass incarceration within the prison-jail industrial complex and the ever increasing concentration of wealth in the hands of the few, we must continue to be inspired by Dr. King’s view from the mountaintop. Black people in particular must be dedicated to leading ourselves and the downtrodden/dispossessed to the Promised Land. Ron Daniels is president of the Institute of the Black World 21st Century and Distinguished Lecturer at York College City University of New York.

Martin Luther King, Jr’s Last Crusade By MarshaRose Joyner In remembrance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. who at the age of 39 was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee on April 4, 1968, the Hawaii Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Coalition and the “Hawaii Needs a Raise Coalition” partners are planning a “People’s Walk” on April 4, 2014 beginning at 3:30pm. There will be a moment of silence and statewide, the church bells will ring at 6:01pm, the time Dr. King was assassinated. In 1967, King embarked on what would be his last crusade. Encouraged by President Lyndon B. Johnson’s War on Poverty and the “Great Society legislative package”, with the help of our own Tom Gill, U.S. Representative (D.HI). This legislative package brought into fruition the Civil Rights Acts of 1964 and Voting Rights Act of 1965, the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 and the resulting Office of Economic Opportunity (which is responsible for Head Start, Job Corps, Community Action Program and VISTA — Volunteers In Service To America), Medicare, Medicaid, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the National Endowments for the Arts and the Humanities, among others. But after passage of Civil Rights Acts in 1964 and 1965, King began challenging the nation's fundamental priorities. He maintained that civil rights laws were empty without "human rights" -- including economic rights. For people too poor to eat at a restaurant or afford a decent home, King said, anti-discrimination laws were hollow. Noting that a majority of Americans below the poverty line were white, King developed a class perspective. He decried the huge income gaps between rich and poor, and called for "radical changes in the structure of our society" to redistribute wealth and power. "True compassion," King declared, "is more than flinging a coin to a beggar; it comes to see that an edifice which produces beggars needs restructuring." Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) began organizing a national campaign against poverty. “The Poor People's Campaign” was an effort to gain economic justice for people of all colors, genders, young & old, gay & straight, in the United States. However, before the completion of the “Great Society” the Johnson Administration turned its full attention to the war in Vietnam. Senator Robert F. Kennedy asked Marian Wright Edelman "To tell Dr. King to bring the poor people to Washington to make hunger and poverty visible since the country’s attention had turned to the Vietnam War and put poverty and hunger on the back burner." Thus, The Poor People’s Campaign was to inaugurate as a new phase of civil rights extending the struggle for racial equality to the cause of economic justice for all of America’s poor. In his last months of his life, King crisscrossed the country to assemble "a multiracial army of the poor" that would descend on Washington. The campaign was met with hostility from the start. The administration read the campaign as a potential siege on Washington. Congressmen openly called for the censure of any other congressmen who proposed meeting with the campaign’s officials. The Washington Post demeaned him; writing that "King has diminished his usefulness to his cause, his country, and his people." Reader's Digest warned of an "insurrection." In 1967, King spoke out against the Vietnam War, and a staunch critic of overall U.S. foreign policy, which he deemed militaristic. In his "Beyond Vietnam" speech on April 4, 1967 -- a year to the

day before he was murdered -- King called the United States "the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today." Time magazine called it "demagogic slander that sounded like a script for Radio Hanoi." King spoke on April 3, 1968, at the Mason Temple (Church of God in Christ Headquarters) in Memphis, Tennessee. The speech primarily concerns the Memphis Sanitation Strike. King calls for unity, “The Power of Economic Withdrawal”, and nonviolent protest, while challenging the United States to live up to its ideals. “We are asking you tonight to go out and tell your neighbors not to buy Coca-Cola in Memphis. Tell them not to buy Sealtest milk. Tell them not to buy Wonder Bread. Tell them not to buy Hart's bread. As Jesse Jackson has said, up to now only the garbage men have been feeling pain. Now we must kinda redistribute that pain. We are choosing these companies because they haven't been fair in their hiring policies, and we are choosing them because they can begin the process of saying they are going to support the needs and the rights of these men who are on strike. And then they can move on downtown and tell Mayor Loeb to do what is right.” King continued, “Now not only that, we've got to strengthen black institutions. I call upon you to take your money out of the banks downtown and deposit your money in Tri-State Bank. We want a "bank-in" movement in Memphis. Go by the savings and loan association. I'm not asking you something that we don't do ourselves in SCLC. Judge Hooks and others will tell you that we have an account here in the savings and loan association from the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. We are telling you to follow what we're doing, put your money there. You have six or seven black insurance companies here in the city of Memphis”. By the end of the 43 minute speech there was no doubt why the power structure wanted to do away with him. At 6:01 pm April 4, 1968, in less than 24 hours, from the time of the speech, while campaigning for black sanitary workers in Memphis, King was assassinated on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel. In spite of the hole in her heart, not long after that fateful day, Mrs. Coretta Scott King and Rev. Ralph Abernathy decided to move ahead with the campaign. The next month, thousands of demonstrators gathered at the National Mall demanding federal action to alleviate poverty as SCLC leaders, joined by the National Welfare Rights Organization, lobbied Congress to introduce an “Economic Bill of Rights” that would include $30 billion for the creation of employment programs and low-income housing and a guaranteed minimum annual income for all Americans. Now, 46 years later, we find that the United States is still in need of an Economic Bill of Rights. Hawaii is one of the most expensive cities in the United States. While most states set income tax thresholds high enough to exempt from taxes a family of three where the employed person works full-time at minimum wage, seven states do require such a family to pay: Alabama, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Montana, Ohio, and Oregon. We are in desperate need of a minimum wage raise, as well as affordable housing. Though less prominent than the Vietnam War protests of the late 60s and less successful than the Civil Rights movement of the early 50’s & 60s, the Poor People’s Campaign evinced a widespread commitment to ending poverty in America and deserves a place in the public memory. While we in Honolulu will not walk to Washington, D.C., we will walk to the Hawaii State Capitol and make our wishes and issues known. State of Black America: Growing Income Inequality By George E. Curry, NNPA Editor-in-Chief The wealth gap between African Americans and Whites has expanded in recent years and is not likely to narrow without significant reductions in Black unemployment and changes in a system that favors the wealthy over poor and middle class Americans, according the National Urban League’s 38th annual State of Black America report entitled “One Nation Underemployed: Jobs Rebuild America.” The report was scheduled to be released April 3. In a statement, Marc H. Morial, president and CEO of the National Urban League, said: “The 2014 State of Black America and corresponding Equality Index indicate that while each state and city has its own economic recovery story to tell, the consistent refrain is that there is an urgent and growing disparity between the few who are reaping the rewards of economic recovery and the majority who are still reeling from aftershocks of the Great Recession.” Morial added, “While ‘too big to fail’ corporations went into the bail-out emergency room and recovered to break earnings and stock market records, most Americans have been left in ICU with multiple diagnoses of unemployment, underemployment, home losses and foreclosures, low or no savings and retirement accounts,

credit denials, and cuts in education and school funding.” The 2014 Equality Index is a yardstick used to measure how well African Americans are doing relative to Whites. In computing the Equality Index, 30 percent of the final score is based on economics, while health and education each gets 25 percent and social justice and civic engagement each receives 10 percent on a 100 percent scale. “That means rather than having a whole pie (100 percent), which would mean full equality with Whites in 2014, African Americans [with an index of 71.2 percent] are missing

about 29 percent of the pie,” the authors said, explaining the Equality Index. In other words, the larger the Equality Index, the closer Blacks are to reaching parity with Whites. The Equality Index has declined from 73 percent in 2006, to 72.1 percent in 2010 to 71.2 percent in 2014. However, authors caution that the overall figure might reflect progress in some areas and retrenchment in others. Relative to last year’s Black Equality Index: the civic engagement index improved from 99.9 percent to 104.7 percent; eco Please see America, page 10

HEALTH & COMMUNITY NEWS Fast-Food Workers Protest Wage Theft at South L.A. McDonald’s Restaurant LOS ANGELES – Dozens of fast-food workers protested outside a South Los Angeles McDonald’s restaurant today in the wake of the release of a national survey of fast-food workers that found a majority of those interviewed experienced “wage theft” — employer tactics designed to shave costs by improperly withholding employees’ pay. (Visit http:// lowpayisnotok.org) Samuel Quintero, an employee at the South L.A. McDonald’s where the protest took place, said his $8 an hour wage already forced him to rent out his bedroom. He now lives in his living room with his mother and little brother. “I'm fighting for $15 because times have changed and we can't make ends meet with this outdated pay,” said

Quintero. The survey of 1,000 fast-food workers across the nation found that 89 percent of workers polled described some form of wage theft, such as employers falsifying timesheets, asking workers to continue working after they’ve clocked out, or counting legally required rest and meal breaks as unpaid time. Edgar Gonzalez, 21, makes $8.25 an hour working 40 hours per week at a McDonald’s in Leimert Park. Edgar, who is expecting a daughter in a few months, says he can’t make ends meet on his current paycheck, let alone one reduced by wage theft. “I can’t afford to live on $8 an hour when prices on everything are going up,” Gonzalez said. “I’m going to have a daughter soon, whom I need to

Sleep Simplicity By Dean L. Jones, CPM Millions of people suffer from a sleep disorder depriving them from useful rest, which is something that can directly pose serious health risks. Destructively, many of those who suffer from sleep deprivation seek remedy from taking a sleep aid drug. However, drugs are unpredictable as the chemical composition scarcely attempts to slow down the nervous system by randomly changing neurotransmitters in the brain. As such, these sleep aids usually work just enough to help in falling asleep for a short period, only to wake up later being unable to fall back to sleep. In that case, when you wake up early you sometimes tend to eat, drink or smoke bringing on another set of potential problems. The good news is that sleeping through the night comes a lot easier when you make a habit of eating fresh fruits and vegetables. It is not just the fiber or the antioxidants, but scientific studies have shown that by consuming two glasses of diluted tart cherry juice will help add 39 minutes of deep, refreshing sleep. Sounds simple, but the natural sugars contained in fruits and vegetables get the job done and much safer than drugs. Seeing as, natural items like tart cherries contain melatonin, a naturally occurring hormone, thereby consuming it helps regulate sleep cycles. Although, fruit drinks are readily available in many grocery stores, watch out for some brands that add high fructose corn syrup and/ or other processed sugars which defeat the purpose of consuming it, so stay SugarAlert! Anecdotally, my grandmother lived to a healthy 104 years of age and she coincidentally was a huge believer in eating watermelon to help prevent hardening of the arteries. I have no idea if regularly eating watermelon helped her to live a long life, but just in case I had no problem making it my favorite fresh fruit to regularly eat.

Dean L. Jones If tart cherries and watermelon do not sound exciting enough, walnuts are a good source of tryptophan, a sleepenhancing amino acid that helps make serotonin and melatonin, which are the “body clock” hormone that sets our sleep-wake cycles. In the same way, almonds are rich in magnesium, a mineral needed for quality sleep. Even eating a salad with dinner can speed up bedtime, since lettuce contains lactucarium that contains sedative like properties and affects the brain similarly to opium. Do not stop there, bananas are a natural sleeping aid in that they contain melatonin and tryptophan (which converts to serotonin) to help a person fall asleep. Pure honey can promote relaxation and help ease you to sleep at night because as a natural sugar it raises insulin slightly and allows tryptophan to enter the brain more easily. Merely by taking a spoonful of honey (hopefully there is no allergy to honey) before bed will bring about a natural force of sleep simplicity. www.SugarAlert.com Dean Jones, Ethics Advocate, Southland Partnership Corporation (a public benefit organization), contributes his view on health attributes of packaged foods & beverages.

NEWS Free Food Industry Seminar Offered Tips for Business Success LOS ANGELES— California State Board of Equalization Chairman Jerome E. Horton conducted a Food Industry Seminar in the Hermosa Beach Community Center, in downtown Hermosa Beach, CA on Tuesday, April 1, 2014. The Board of Equalization is charged with the administration of more than $55 billion annually in business taxes and other fees. “The primary purpose of the Hermosa Beach Food Industry Seminar was to provide restaurant and bar owners, mobile food truck operators, private caterers, and others in the food service industry information about tax credits, refunds, business loan assistance, and other information to help grow their businesses,” said Chairman Horton. Nearly 200 business owners registered for the free, one-day seminar that was promoted by the Board of Equalization, the Chamber of Commerce, the City of Hermosa Beach, and the Los Angeles Chapter of the California Restaurant Association. Recognizing that one-third of all California restaurants are

located in Los Angeles County, Chairman Horton wanted to ensure that the Board of Equalization did its part to inform and educate restaurant and other food service operators. Donald and Leanna Maynard are the owners of “D & L’s Barbecue and More,” a Los Angeles-based, mobile barbecue and catering business. “Our parttime business operation is growing moderately,” said Donald Maynard. “We came to the seminar to make sure we are on the right track, and in compliance with applicable rules and laws.” Chairman Horton and his team have conducted dozens of small business seminars throughout the 4th District, which includes most of Los Angeles County. The next small business seminar will be held on Tuesday, April 8th at the South Gate Educational Center in South Gate, on Wednesday, May 6that the Pacific Community Center in Glendale, and on May 14, 2014, at the Stanley Plummer Community Center in Dan Dimas, California.

State of Black America: Growing Income Inequality (Continued from page 3) nomics dipped from 56.3 percent to 55.5 percent; social justice declined from 56.9 percent to 56.8 percent; and health (76.8 percent) and education (76.8 percent) remained unchanged. The report also found: Black median household income ($33,764) is about 60 percent of Whites ($56,565), down from 62 percent before the recession; and 28.1 percent of Blacks live in poverty vs. 11 percent of Whites. Unlike African Americans, Hispanics saw their Equality Index with Whites increase slightly, from 74.6 percent in 2013 to 75.8 percent in 2014, which was 4.6 percent higher than African Americans. In a chapter titled “Policies of Exclusion Perpetuate the Racial Wealth Gap,” Thomas M. Shapiro wrote: “The dramatic and widening gap in household wealth along racial lines in the United States reflects policies and institutional practices that create different opportunities for whites and African Americans. Personal ambition and behavioral choices are but a small part of the equation.” Shapiro wrote, “In gross terms, the difference in median wealth between America’s white and African American households has grown stunningly large. The wealth gap almost tripled from 1984 to 2009, increasing from $85,000 to $236,500. The median net worth of white households in the study grew to $265,000 over the 25year period compared with just $28,500 for the Black households.” He said five factors account for two-thirds of the proportional increase in the racial wealth gap: number of years of home ownership, average family income, employment stability, college

education and financial support and inheritance. According to Shapiro, home ownership accounts for 27 percent of the growth in the racial wealth gap. He said reasons home equity rises dramatically faster for Whites include: White families buy homes and start acquiring equity eight years earlier than Black families because they are more likely to receive family assistance or an inheritance for down payments; a larger upfront payment by White homeowners lower interest rates; residential segregation places an artificial ceiling on home equity in non-White neighborhoods; and the home ownership rate for White families is 28 percent higher than rates for Blacks. “Hard evidence shows in stark terms that it is not just the last recession and implosion of the housing market that contributed to the widening racial wealth disparities,” Shapiro wrote. “Past policies of exclusion, such as discriminatory mortgage lending, which continues today, ensure that certain groups reap a greater share of what America has to offer while others are left out.” No one expects the wealth gap to narrow without some reduction in unemployment. Valerie Rawlston Wilson, an economist in the National Urban League’s Washington bureau, noted in her introduction that “More than one-third of unemployed workers have been out of work for six months or longer and one in four has been jobless for a year or longer. Though the unemployment rate declined by 1.2 percentage points from January to December 2013—the largest decline

over a single year since the recovery began—labor force participation also reached a 35year low in December. This downward trend in labor force participation raises concerns about underutilization of America’s labor capacity, or underemployment.” She explained, “If we factored in the number of people who want and are available for work (but are not actively looking for a job) along with the number of unemployed workers actively looking for a job, and those who are working parttime out of necessity (but would prefer full-time work), the actual rate of underemployment was 13.1 percent at the end of 2013, nearly double the official unemployment rate.” And things are even worse for African Americans. “For African Americans, these challenges are even greater,” she wrote. “Though the Black unemployment rate briefly and narrowly dipped below 12 percent for the first time since 2008 at the end of last year, 42 percent of Black unemployed workers are long-term unemployed and 28 percent have been jobless for at least a year. The rate of underemployment for African Americans was 20.5 percent, compared to 11.8 percent for white workers and 18.4 percent for Hispanic workers.” For the first time, the State of Black America provides an Equality Index for 77 major metropolitan areas. The report provided charts for Black-White income equality and unemployment equality. From http://www.afro.com/ s ect ions /ne ws/a fro_ brie fs / story.htm?storyid=82155

STATE / NATIONAL & WORLD NEWS NAHREP Report: Hispanics Continue to Drive Owner Household Growth SAN DIEGO/MIAMI [CapitalWirePR] – Hispanics lead the growth of U.S. owner households and many more are credit-ready to buy now if homes were available, according to the 2013 State of Hispanic Homeownership Report published this week by the National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals (NAHREP). The report about the Hispanic homebuyer market offers an update on key indicators such as household formations, jobs, income and education gains that signal Latinos’ readiness to buy homes. A digital copy of the report is available for download at: http:// nahrep.org/state-of-hispanichomeownership.php “This is a story of pent-up demand. Latinos are ready to buy homes now. Their biggest obstacle coming into today’s market isn’t credit; it’s lack of available housing,” said Jason Madiedo, president of NAHREP. “The readiness of this first-time buyer market represents a whole new purchase cycle that can drive recovery in local communities and put the housing recession behind us once and for all.” According to the report, Hispanics achieved modest growth of 84,000 owner households in 2013, but accounted for an increase of 2.6 million owner households or nearly 47 percent of all homeownership growth in the country between 2010 and 2013. They are expected to comprise 50 percent of all new homebuyers by 2020. The U.S. Hispanic population has grown to 53 million, a 50 percent increase since 2000. Between 2000 and 2012, Hispanic population growth accounted for more than half of the country’s overall population growth. Between now and 2050, Hispanics are expected to grow 167 percent compared to a 42 percent growth rate projected for the rest of the U.S. population. All key indicators are relevant to housing demand. The 2013 report offers a snapshot of economic and demo-

graphic trends that trace the rise in prominence of the Hispanic mega market and its potential to impact the U.S. housing market. It also outlines the challenges and opportunities associated with the market and identifies the housing inventory shortage as the most compelling challenge facing Hispanic homebuyers today. Hispanic real estate leaders say that the astounding trend of cash sales has all but eliminated affordable housing inventory in the nation’s largest Hispanic markets like as Miami, Phoenix, Las Vegas and Atlanta, based on data on institutional investor and cash sales transactions. According to NAHREP, misguided foreclosure disposition programs that favor cash investors are to blame for the shortage and the missed opportunity for homebuyers. Some of the key indicators relevant to housing demand include: ·Population Growth: Hispanics continue to dominate population growth in America. The Hispanic population is presently 53 million and projected to reach 120 million by 2050, accounting for 30 percent of the total U.S. population. Today one in every four children is Hispanic. ·Education: Hispanics continue to make gains in education at all grade levels. In 2012, 69 percent of Hispanic high school graduates enrolled in college, for the first time surpassing nonHispanic Whites at 67 percent. The Hispanic high school dropout rate has also plummeted by 50

percent in the past decade, falling to 15 percent in 2012. ·Employment and Income: Hispanics continue to drive growth in the nation’s workforce. Since 2000, Hispanic job gains have accounted for 66 percent of the growth in the U.S. labor force. By 2050, one in three working Americans will be Hispanic. The median household income of Hispanics is $40,400. Twenty-two percent of all Hispanic house-

holds earn more than $75,000 annually. ·Consumerism: The purchasing power of Hispanics is estimated to grow to $1.5 trillion by 2015, a $500 billion increase from 2010. ·Homeo wnership: Since 2010, Hispanics have accounted for a net increase of 559,000 owner households, representing 56 percent of the total net growth of owner households in the U.S. Hispanics also comprise 47 percent of the total net growth of homeowners since 2000. They are also more likely than the general U.S. population to prefer owning a home. This year’s report, which was researched and produced by NAHREP, augments Census and market data on the Hispanic real estate market with anecdotal observations from its members who primarily work with Hispanic first-time homebuyers. In a 2014 NAHREP survey, members said

that Hispanic homeownership growth would have been stronger if homes were available to purchase. Forty-two percent of members said the present housing inventory shortage was the number one barrier to homeownership for their clients. While 40 percent said they had more than five active clients who have been unable to find a suitable home or get an offer accepted. "Latinos are natural born entrepreneurs. Homeownership is the cornerstone of economic opportunity that enables our families to fund businesses and move forward. We must remove all barriers now and enable the new generation of Latinos to invest in the American Dream of homeownership," said Frank Herrera, Chairman of New America Alliance, a nonprofit that promotes Latino leadership, entrepreneurship and access to capital in the Latino community.”
