What Would Dr. King Say About the Disenfranchisement of South L.A. ? Yes, it’s true. Even after all that Blacks in America, especially, Blacks in South Los Angeles have gone through, the 1965 Watts riot,1992 riots and much more, yes, it’s

Hello Readers, Happy Martin Luther King weekend and I hope and pray that you will be safe and sane as you celebrate the birthday of such a great man. Let take some time to reflect on the life and legacy that Dr. King left. We must not forget to tell our children and our grandchildren about the great work Dr. King is known for. He was more than a dreamer with his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. He was a servant of God who cared about people. He cared so much so that he left the pulpit to get in the street with the people and their struggle for life in these United States of America. He was a Moses for us. He led the way through the darks days of deep and entrenched segregation and Jim Crow. He received his call from God and he did not turn back. Today, we must not turn back. We must move forward and speak out on issue like the “Promise Zone” which was recently designated excluding the most poverty-stricken community in Los Angeles, which is South Los Angeles. We must pray and act for justice. We cannot get weary.

First, comes the joy of Christmas and the associated effort to demonstrate our love of friends and relatives with the lavish gifts. This is followed by the hope that comes with the birth of a New Year. We have an overindulgent celebration, as well as the annual exercise of making promises to ourselves called New Year’s Resolutions. Soon after we make them, we routinely break them!

Dr. King spoke dramatically of trials and tribulations from which we emerged. Like most of us of that generation, we stood as witnesses to never-ending, daily injustices. In our eagerness to shield our children from the trauma of racism and the memories of disparagement that can cast a shadow over confidence and selfesteem, we stopped teaching the lessons of running the race in the dust of last place. CHURCH & COMMUNITY NEWS Research: Racial Diversity at Church More Dream Than Reality By Bob Smietana NASHVILLE, Tenn -Having a racially diverse church remains more dream than reality for most Protestant pastors. More than eight in ten (85 percent) say every church should strive for racial diversity, according to a survey from Nashville-based LifeWay Research. But few have diverse flocks. Most (86 percent) say their congregation is predominately one racial or ethnic group. It’s a reality that once led the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., to call Sunday mornings the most segregated time of the week. Today, diverse churches remain rare, said Ed Stetzer, president of LifeWay Research, partly because of human nature. “Everybody wants diversity,” said Stetzer. “But many don’t want to be around people who are different.” The research study also found 91 percent say “churches should reflect the racial diversity in their community,” and 79 percent believe their congregations look very similar to the people in their neighborhood. But Mark DeYmaz, pastor of Mosiac Church, a multi-
ethnic church in Little Rock, Ark., is skeptical. DeYmaz, who also helped found the Mosaix network of multi-ethnic churches, said pastors aren’t always aware of how diverse their communities have become. “Pastors would do well to look into the diversity of nearby public schools and gauge this against the diversity of their church to really understand their context,” he said. “They might, too, spend one hour sitting at the front of the nearby Wal-Mart or other local grocery to see if in fact their church reflects the community.” Data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows America is becoming increasingly diverse. About 17 percent of Americans identify as Hispanic. African Americans make up 13 percent of the population, followed by Asian Americans (5 percent), and one percent Native American or Native Alaskan. Another 2.4 percent identify with more than one racial group. Non-Hispanic whites make up 63 percent of the population. That number drops to about 49 percent for children under 5 years old, according to a recent report from the Associated Press.
DeYmaz sees the widespread support for the idea of diversity in the LifeWay Research poll as a good sign. “We have gained tremendous ground over the past ten years or so,” said DeYmaz. Ten years ago, he said, the first meeting of the Mosaix network drew about 30 people. A similar meeting in November 2013 drew more than 1,000. He said pastors are more aware of the need for diversity in churches. In the past, DeYmaz and other leaders in multiethnic churches spent much of their time trying to convince other pastors about the need for diversity. Now they spend more time talking with pastors about strategies for creating diverse churches. “Increasingly, their question is not, ‘why should I,’ but ‘how can I?’” he said. Derwin Gray, pastor of Transformation Church, a multi-ethic congregation in Indian Land, S.C., said if pastors want a diverse congrega-
tion, they need to change their sermons. He worries pastors support diversity for pragmatic rather than theological reasons. Gray said the early Christian churches were racially diverse, but that idea was lost as churches divided along racial and ethnic lines. He wants pastors to go back to the Bible to discover why churches should be diverse. “We shouldn’t long for racial diversity – we should long for the proclamation of Jesus, which creates ethnic diversity,” he said. “The Apostle Paul didn’t start one church for Jews and one church for Gentiles in the New Testament. The Gospel brought people together.” More focus on racial diversity in church could find a welcome audience. A second LifeWay Research survey – this time an online panel of 1,036 Americans – found that three quarters (78 percent) say “every
church should strive for racial diversity.” More than half (51%) say they would be most comfortable visiting a church where multiple ethnicities are well represented. Three quarters also said churches should reflect the diversity of their communities. There are some signs the number of diverse churches in the United States is growing. The 2010 Faith Communities Today survey, which included 11,000 congregations of different faiths, found that about 12.5 percent of Protestant churches were multi-ethnic. That means in those churches no one ethnic group makes up more 80 percent of the congregation. DeYmaz said moving diversity from a dream to a reality will take hard work. “Wishful thinking in this regard will not bring increasing diversity to local churches for the sake of the Gospel,” he said.

HEALTH & COMMUNITY NEWS Congresswoman Waters Encourages Breast Cancer Survivors to Stay Strong Los Angeles, CA – Congresswoman Maxine Waters (CA-43), a longtime advocate of breast cancer awareness, education and research, showed support for urban women and their families struggling with cancer at the inaugural Life Worth Saving Awards & Fundraiser Luncheon this past weekend. The founder of Life Worth Saving, Yvette Pye, is in her third fight against cancer. The organization understands that the effects of life-threatening diseases can potentially become devastating and serves as a vehicle to empower, educate and heal the community. The event was held at the Century Community Charter School in Inglewood, CA. Attendees included gospel duo Mary Mary. "Yvette is a
fighter not just for herself but for other women who also face this horrible disease," said Congresswoman Waters. "I urge all women to make sure you are aware of breast cancer risk factors, doing monthly breast self-exams, and getting regular mammograms to detect breast cancer in its earliest and most treatable stages." Congresswoman Waters’ advocacy on health care issues, and her willingness to challenge the health insurance companies, started nearly four decades ago. Remember The Maine By Dean L. Jones, CPM Effectively 116 years have passed since a terrorist like explosion destroyed the United States' battleship Maine in Cuba's Havana Harbor (February 15, 1898). This ruinous blast killed 266 of the 350 men aboard the Maine, which pushed the USA into war against Spain. On the face of this historical event there is little reason for considering not to eat health harmful processed sugar, but out of good consciousness one may what to reflect on some of the appalling circumstances leading to current affixation on American processed sugar. More than two hundred years before this explosion, Cuba and the many other islands in that region were constantly undergoing some type of takeover by another major country, and it was in the 19th century when Cuba became the most important world producer of processed sugar. It got there by employing forced enslavement of Africans for labor, as the Cuban processed sugar industry was booming, necessitating the country's need to improve its transportation infrastructure. Here's where American capitalists contributed to building roads and railroads that greatly eased the transportation of perishable sugar cane. Such capitalists also got heavily involved as planters in Cuba taking full advantage of enslaved African labor that guaranteed a high monetary return from their investments. Thus, the USS Maine had been docked for less than a month in Cuba on an official mission that was basically to protect American lives and property in the event that Cuba's struggle for independence from Spain might escalate into full-blown warfare. Enslaving people to yield free labor in Cuba to plant and produce sugar occurred even after the rebellion of Africans on board the Spanish schooner, La Amistad, in 1839. Similarly to remembering the Maine, La Amistad is an event to pay homage and refrain from eating a product entrenched with enslaving people. In 1841 the

The Mende people were the enslaved parties who had been abducted from Sierra Leone, where the final verdict was ruled in favor of the Mende, thereby restoring their freedom and safe passage back to Africa. All the same, by 1860 Cuba continued processing sugar (with 436,000 enslaved Africans), and was particularly dependent on the United States, which bought almost 90% of it. Simply put, it stems from USA's sweet tooth that enabled people to be enslaved to satisfy the sugar craving. Later during prohibition of alcohol in addition to importing Cuban sugar, Bacardi Rum (Cuban company - established in 1862) used the molasses in the making of its product and USA represented 80% of sales. Three Health Issues Women Shouldn't (and Don't Have To) Put Up With (BPT) - Women often endure health issues in silence, especially if the problem is embarrassing, affects only them and doesn't pose a serious health risk. Yet issues that appear minor and personal can have a major impact on a woman's quality of life and ultimately on the lives of those around her. "It's natural for women to want to avoid talking about certain deeply personal health problems, such as heavy periods, digestive problems or incontinence," says Dr. Jessica Shepherd, assistant professor of Clinical Obstetrics and Gynecology and Director of Minimally Invasive Gynecology, University of Illinois College of Medicine . "But talking about a problem can lead to effective treatment. Many health issues that seem to be merely inconvenient can actually have a pervasive impact on a woman's personal and professional life." Here are three common health issues that women tend to discount as "minor," and avoid talking about. Yet each of these issues can deeply affect not only a woman's physical health, but her mental, personal and professional well-being as well. * Incontinence - Defined as the involuntary release of urine from the bladder, incontinence affects 25 million Americans, according to research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Seventy-five to 80 percent of them are women, the National Association for Continence estimates. Women may remain silent about their problem thinking inconti-
nence is a normal part of aging (it's not) or that it only affects sufferers on a personal level. Yet a study in the Journal of the American Geriatric Society found that incontinence affects a person's quality of life, disrupting social, sexual, interpersonal and even professional functioning. From bladder training to medications, treatments can help. The first step is to talk to your doctor about the problem. * Heavy periods - About 10 million women experience heavy periods that require hourly changes of pads or tampons even at night, bleeding that lasts a week or longer, and that restrict their daily activities. While menstrual problems may seem deeply personal to a woman and not something she wants to think affects others - heavy periods can profoundly affect a woman personally and professionally. Women with heavier periods miss work 28 percent more than other women, a study of the National Health Interview Survey reveals. And 83.5 percent of women in a United Kingdom study said if their heavy periods persisted over the next five years, they would be unhappy - making the issue a mental health concern, too. Consulting with their doctors can help women decide on a treatment for their heavy periods. Oral contraceptives and hysterectomies have been traditional options for severe cases. In a Do-It-Yourself World, We Still Need Professionals (BPT) - We live in a world that encourages us to DIY - "do it yourself" - in everything from remodeling our houses to building our own websites. While smart, dedicated people can certainly accomplish a lot, professional expertise is still extremely valuable, especially when it comes to investing. New data from a Natixis Global Asset Management survey of 750 U.S. investors shows that most investors can benefit from working with an advisor, broker or other financial professional. "Our study found that many investors lack the necessary investing knowledge and professional guidance that is so crucial to achieving successful savings outcomes," says David L. Giunta, president and chief executive officer of Natixis Global Asset Management U.S. "Today more than ever investors need the support, expertise and perspective that a professional advisor can bring to the table." The study found that Americans have a low opinion of their own investing acumen, with fewer than one in three (28 percent) classifying themselves as having "very strong" investment knowledge. Most (54 percent) say they don't have a financial plan, and nearly as many (45 percent) say they don't even have clear financial goals. Among investors who do have financial plans in place, many are not being realistic: On average, they expect they'll need 62 percent of their preretirement income to live on once they retire - much less than the 70 percent to 80 percent that many experts believe retirees will need. While investors readily acknowledge their lack of investment knowledge, goals or planning, they're not doing much to improve their skills. Nearly half say they spend more time planning vacations or home improvements than they do monitoring or rebalancing their investment portfolios.
The bottom line is this: Many investors remain unprepared to manage their investments, lacking the knowledge, the time and - perhaps - the motivation to do all that is needed. With Social Security and pensions playing a diminishing role, and an increased need for other investments that can generate retirement income, under-advised Americans could enter their golden years unprepared and short of money - placing at risk the secure, dignified retirements they have worked so hard to achieve. Financial professionals can play an important role in helping investors reach their retirement goals. Here are seven ways they can assist individuals in reaching their goals. Advisors can: 1. Help investors articulate their reasons for saving and set clear goals. Saving for a college education in 10 years requires different strategies than preparing for a retirement decades in the future. 2. Assist investors with developing a financial roadmap. Yes, we can't predict the future - but a good financial plan can help investors make progress toward their goals while mitigating market volatility and other uncertainties. 3. Provide investment expertise. Some investments that would benefit a portfolio, for example alternative investments, can be complex. A trained professional can provide the knowledge and expertise investors require to select the appropriate products and strategies for their needs. 4. Offer an independent perspective. Perhaps the single biggest threat to any portfolio is human emotion. Discussing market volatility with a knowledgeable advisor who can put events into a historical context can help take emotion out of the equation - especially during rapidly rising or falling markets - providing a sound platform for investors to make better decisions. 5. Create portfolios that
can generate growth or income while minimizing risk. Advisors can help investors build durable portfolios that are consistent with their risk tolerance and are designed to enable them to stay invested and focus on long-term goals. 6. These investors have stronger investment knowledge and clearer goals and plans; are twice as confident that their retirement plans are on track; and have a better overall understanding of risk and how alternative investments work than investors who don't use advisors regularly. "Investors need durable portfolios that are consistent with their risk tolerance, intended for the long haul and designed to enable them to stay invested and focus on longterm goals," says Giunta. "However, there is no paint-bynumbers investment strategy. While some investors may be successful on their own, the majority of them will be more successful in meeting their goals if they have an advisor by their side."

According to statistics, an athlete’s professional lifespan is about six years for a player who makes the opening day roster, and 11.7 years for those talented enough to make a Pro Bowl. However, as of the 2008 NFL season with 1,889 players listed on the 32 NFL team rosters, the average longevity is 4.6 years, according to Medical News Today. They face challenges including brain damage caused by the contact sport, as well as poor preparation for the job market. After two years of retirement, 78 percent of former NFL players have gone bankrupt or are under financial stress, notes research from Sports Illustrated. More disturbingly, just 49 percent of NFL retirees 30-49 years old have jobs within a year after leaving the league, notes a University of Michigan 2009 report. What Would Dr. King Say About the Disenfranchisement of South L.A. ? (Continued from page 1) committed on the people of South Los Angeles. All I have heard is “wait until next time” from public officials and politicians. Congresswoman Karen Bass said, “I am disappointed that South Los Angeles was not included in this round, and I will be following future Promise Zone announcement to ensure that South Los Angeles is included in the next round.” The crucial question to Bass is “Where were you all the time during the first round?” “Where were the outreach component of this economic deal?” I think Dr. King summed it up in his 1967 book “Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community? It was here that Dr. King criticized Johnson’s War on Poverty for being too piecemeal. Dr. King said, “Programs created under the “War on Poverty” such as housing programs, job training and family counseling” all had a fatal disadvantage because the programs have never proceeded on a coordinated basis...at no time has a total, coordinated and fully adequate program been conceived.” Dr. King was prophetic in his statement and even today because of this fatal disadvantage South Los Angeles is being robbed and disenfranchised from much needed economic justice and empowerment. One year prior to Dr. King’s death, on April 4, 1967 while speaking at Riverside Baptist Church in New York, he said, “It seems as if there was a real promise of hope for the poor—both black and white—through the poverty program. There were ex-
periments, hopes, new beginning. Then came the build up in Vietnam and I watched the program broken and eviscerated as if it were some idle political plaything of a society gone mad on war, and I knew that America would never invest the necessary funds or energies in rehabilitation of its poor so long as adventures like Vietnam continues to draw men and skills and money like some demonic destructive suction tube.” Dr. King’s started the Poor People’s Campaign after this to address the shortcomings of the “War on Poverty” to “demand a check” for the suffering of African Americans. Now more than ever, African American people of South Los Angeles are hit the hardest with foreclosure rates, homelessness, lack of quality education, unemployment and no employment and lack of access to capital to jumpstart businesses and its leaders are still not investing the necessary funds or energies in the rehabilitation of is poor and therefore they should too “demand a check”. The people of South Los Angeles should demand a check because they have been disenfranchised and robbed of economic opportunities in that they have been seemingly willful disregarded by the status quo and by those who were in the know. As Garcetti and one of his staff member, who is an African American commissioner for Public Works gives excuses and reasons for why South Los Angeles were not included in the “Promise Zone” and another politician saying “next time”, it paints a real vivid picture of what the late Dr.
Amos Wilson in his book Blueprint for Black Power: A Moral, Political and Economic Imperative for the Twenty-First Century, said about African Americans having access and control over economic resources. He said, “One of the most important and potent sources of social power is access to and control over economic resources. Dr. Wilson said, “The relative powerlessness of Afrikan Americans is directly related to their relative lack of control over important economic resources. This lack is neither due to the absence of an entrepreneurial tradition nor an absence of “economic virtues” so celebrated in White Americans and economically successful immigrant groups, including fabled Koreans and Cubans. The relative feebleness of Afrikan American enterprise has been deliberately induced and maintained by a number of concrete, socioeconomic, sociopolitical actions taken against their economic growth, development and power by three major groups—White Americans, immigrants, and Blacks themselves— particularly the Black leadership establishment.” The above statement by Dr. Wilson is sad but true and the Black leadership establishment’s lukewarm demeanor of tacit approval of having been willfully robbed and disenfranchised from the “Promise Zone” by Garcetti and his ilk is sickening and must not be tolerated, especially 50 years after Dr. King proclaimed "I Have a Dream. It is time to wake up from dreaming and make Dr. King a reality.

TV’s Mowry Twins Open Up About Interracial Marriage Backlash By Alexis Taylor From the AFRO Tears flowed on a recent episode of Oprah Winfrey’s “Where are they Now?” show as one of the nation’s most popular set of twins discussed their relationships. Sisters Tia MowryHardrict and Tamera MowryHousley, born in Germany to Black and White parents, gave details about the public backlash they have encountered over one sister’s interracial marriage. “People choose to look past love and spew hate. That’s what hurts me. I’ve never experienced so much hate ever in my life,” said Mowry-Housley, who married Adam Housley, a Fox News correspondent, in May of 2011. “I’ve been called ‘White man’s whore’ and the new one is ‘Back in the day you would have cost $300, now you’re giving it to him for free-- stop that,” she said her sister, in shock, wiped tears from her eyes. “Me as a person could never even fathom or think of these words. It’s very hard for me to think of it because I’m a product of it. My mom is a beautiful Black woman and my dad is an amazing White man and I grew up seeing a family,” she said.

Mowry-Housely also said that she has battled with taunts that her sister is better because she is married to African American actor Cory Hardrict. “They say, ‘Oh Tia’s a true Black woman because she married a Black man.’ Oh? MowryHardrict said she’s been told her sister has “done it right by marrying a White man.” Regardless of the bullying, the women say they are happily married, and both have had sons in the past two years. wood in 1994 when ABC produced “Sister, Sister,” a TV series about twins named Landry who were separated at birth and later reunited after a chance encounter in a mall. Both women have experienced success as adults, and briefly co-starred on a show together from 2011 to 2013 called “Tia and Tamera,” which aired on the Style Network and E! Curry From the NNPA The U.S. Justice Department and the Tobacco-Free Kids Action Fund have reached an agreement with the four major tobacco companies requiring them to spend millions across major media as part of a settlement for their misrepresentation of the hazards of smoking—but the companies will not have to make a single purchase from a Black print or broadcast media company. As part of a 24-page proposed consent agreement reached Friday, the companies will have to spend more than $30 million advertising with the three major television networks and run full-page ads in 35 White and Hispanic newspapers as well as purchasing space on
their respective websites. Black publications and media companies were not among those included in the agreement. The agreement is scheduled to go before U.S. District Judge Gladys Kessler in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia on Wednesday for final approval. “We are shocked and deeply disappointed that the Justice Department, the Tobacco-Free Action Fund and the tobacco industry would all agree to sign off an advertising plan that totally disrespects the Black community,” said Cloves C. Campbell, chairman of the National Newspaper Publishers Association, a federation of nearly 200 Black newspapers. “The industry’s past efforts to target African-American consum-
Waters Touts Importance of Volcker Rule WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA), Ranking Member of the House Financial Services Committee, touted the importance of the recently-released Volcker Rule for ensuring taxpayer dollars are no longer used to protect banks from risky trading losses. In a statement delivered in a hearing of the full Financial Services Committee on the measure, Waters underscored that a strongly implemented and enforced Volcker rule will protect the U.S. economy from suffering another debilitating financial crisis and will ensure taxpayers are never again asked to rescue failed financial firms. Her full remarks are below. As prepared for delivery: Thank you, Mr. Chairman. It’s been more than five years since the beginning of the financial crisis – which resulted in the largest destruction of wealth in a generation. And while many observers still disagree about its central cause, we know that proprietary trading played a significant role. Such trading has indeed produced tremendous profits for some of our largest financial firms – but it also contributed to losses during the height of the crisis. In fact, one academic study estimated that by mid-April of 2008, banks had lost roughly $230 billion dollars on certain proprietary holdings, which regulators and other interested parties had believed were simply inventories of assets held to facilitate client trading. In the wake of these devastating losses, taxpayers stepped in to staunch the bleeding and Congress took action to ensure that such an emergency would never happen again, enacting comprehensive legislation to address the many causes of the crisis – from the bad loans at the heart of the collapse, to the exotic securitizations that drove the demand for predatory mortgages, to the opaque derivatives markets that created tremendous interconnectedness and risk in our financial system. A key part of Wall Street Reform is the Volcker Rule. If properly implemented, the Rule will provide that banks insured by taxpayer dollars can no longer engage in proprietary trading or investments in risky vehicles like hedge funds. The concept of the Rule is simple: loan-making, deposit-taking banks should not be engaged in risky, speculative activity on the backs of the American taxpayers. Many observers of our financial system agree on this. Standard & Poor’s has pointed out that,
quote, “the implementation of the Volcker rule could have favorable implications for the credit profiles of some of the largest U.S. banks, such as reducing trading portfolio risk.” John Reed, the former Citigroup Chairman, notes that, quote, “a strong Volcker rule is one of the most important provisions to prevent ‘too big to fail’ financial institutions, stop conflicts of interest and support credit in our economy.” And even Chairman Hensarling has stated to the Wall Street Journal that, quote, “we have to do a better job ring-fencing, firewalling—whatever metaphor you want to use—between an insured depository institution and a noninsured investment bank.” In the face of their statutory directive to implement Volcker, our regulators have undertaken the tremendous task of wading through 18,000 comments – and have engaged with stakeholders during dozens upon dozens of meetings. We see the European Union potentially moving forward with a similar effort, and the United Kingdom has passed legislation implementing a similar measure, known as the “Vickers Report.” All of these actions should be applauded. At the same time, I understand that regulators are working diligently to address some issues related to the Rule that have come up in the last month, including the issue related to collateralized debt obligations backed by Trust Preferred Securities. Most of the Democratic members of this Committee urged regulators to provide an exemption for banks that would be consistent with their treatment under the Wall Street Reform Act. I appreciate the regulators’ responsiveness on this point, and believe their recent interim rule has provided important relief to community banks. Mr. Chairman, the Volcker rule will ensure federal dollars are no longer used to protect losses from risky trading. Doing so will protect the U.S. economy from suffering another debilitating financial crisis and will ensure taxpayers are never again asked to rescue failed financial firms. And now that we have the Rule’s framework in place, I look forward to conducting oversight and ensuring that our regulators are faithfully enforcing this provision, which will be central to the success of the Wall Street Reform Act. Hamm, director of communications for the TobaccoFree Kids Action, said on Monday that the media outlets were selected by Kessler and disclosed in an order issued Aug. 17, 2006. Hamm said he did not know how she determined what media outlets would be used to carry the advertising. A telephone call Monday requesting comment from the Justice Department was not returned. The story of the agreement was first disclosed by Target Market News. The Chicago-based publication said an advertising source placed the value of the total buy at $30 million to $45 million. The advertising campaign, which won’t go into effect until all appeals have been exhausted by the tobacco companies, was agreed
to as part of a settlement that found tobacco companies misled the public about the dangers of smoking. The four defendants are Altria, R.J. Reynolds Tobacco, Lorillard and Philip Morris USA. The U.S. Justice Department filed suit against the cigarette manufacturers on Sept. 22, 1999 charging that they had violated the Racketeer Influenced and Corruption Organizations Act. They were found guilty at the conclusion of a trial that lasted from Dec. 21, 2004 to June 9, 2005. Though the tobacco industry is bypassing Black media while complying with a federal order to disclose its deception, in the past it used the Black media to target African-American consumers. “The tobacco industry has gone to great lengths to target the African-American community over the past 30 years,” the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids stated. “Through market research and aggressive advertising, the industry has successfully penetrated this population. The industry’s ‘investment’ in the AfricanAmerican community has had a destructive impact: African Americans suffer the greatest burden of
tobacco-related mortality of any ethnic or racial group in the United States.” “The health of the African American community has suffered disproportionately from the advertising campaigns of the tobacco companies, and Black owned media has been demonstrated to be the best way to engage the African American community,” Jim Winston, executive director of the National Association of Black Owned Broadcasters, told Target Market News. “Yet, now that the tobacco companies are being required to educate the public about the harm that tobacco products have caused, the companies and the DOJ have no plan to direct any educational advertising to our communities.” Both Winston and Campbell said they plan to contact the Justice Department and ask it to direct tobacco companies to include Black-owned print and broadcast media in their public education buys. If that fails, Campbell said, his organization will take stronger action. “If our newspapers aren’t good enough to advertise in, their products – including the nontobacco ones – aren’t good enough for us to consume,” he said.
