Black Leaders Supports Jan Perry for Los Angeles Mayor By Gloria Zuurveen Editor-in-Chief LOS ANGELES—The late Mayor Tom Bradley made history in Los Angeles when he became its first African American mayor in 1973. Forty years later, the citizens of Los Angeles have the opportunity to make history once again by electing an African American woman as mayor of

Like Mayor Bradley, who reached across racial and ethnic lines and created a strong coalition of African Americans, Jews, liberal whites, Mexican Americans to win the primary in a crowded field of 13, so too is Perry touting her abilities to do likewise in that has also reached across racial and ethnic lines over the last 12 years to build coalitions among the many ethnic groups that live in Los Angeles. Perry, although reported as the underdog in the race in terms of money raised has a good chance of winning the primary in 2013 just as Mayor Bradley did, surprising many, in 1973. Perry’s potential for winning is just as great, especially if the Black community dor for Perry, what Black America did for President Barack Obama propelling him to victory for a second term with 93 percent of their votes. Perry can, like Mayor Bradley, make a difference for Los Angeles. While Mayor Brad-
Dean Jones world with skyline, vibrant downtown and revitalized financial and business districts, Perry over the last 12 years, has led the transformation of downtown Los Angeles. She has supported economic development and investment to restore downtown and helped to become the welcoming place for middle class families and economic engine of the entire region. Reading Perry’s history, it’s evidence that Perry is no stranger to politics and appears to have been destined for such as time as this, that is, being a candidate for mayor, Perry is the offspring of two parents who brought her up in the shadows of political and civic engagement. Her father, Samuel Perry and her mother Bettie
served both served as mayor of Woodmere, Ohio. Perry recalls vividly her parents efforts in the Civil Rights Movement, fighting and organizing their community made the family a target which led to a local hate group burning a cross in the backyard of the family new home. Perry, a coalition builder among all ethnic groups, understand the importance and power of the African American vote and she has never swayed from getting in the trenches with the African American community. Congresswoman Maxine Waters said while urging everyone to vote for Perry to be Los Angeles next mayor, “Perry has worked hard over a decade and in that time she has never lost sight of what is important for the people she represents. She is deeply rooted in the community and has consistently fought for the community interests.” Black leaders from political giants like Waters, retired Los Angeles City councilman and State Senator Nate Holden, State Senator Rod Wright, 8th District City Councilman Bernard Parks and clergy like the Rev. Cecil L. Murray of the USC Cecil Murray Center for Community Engagement, are standing, stomping and lending their voices for Perry to be the next mayor because, they say, she is the most qualified. Holden said, “She is the only candidate who can coalesce all the races.” He said, “She is very diverse on the issues and her
staff reflects that diversity.” “Other candidates can’t say that. They talk the talk but they don’t walk the walk,” Holden said.

She has the experience to be mayor.” Wright said, “I have to go with Jan because she knows the community.” He said, “It’s a no brainer, she is the best qualified.” Ian Foxx of Foxx Media Group said, “Jan works for the people.” Listing Perry’s accomplishments over the decade, Waters said, “She is tough enough and fights for the best possible outcomes for both the city and her district. EDITORIAL/OPINION Publisher’s Column
Dr. Gloria Zuurveen President, CEO, Founder and Publisher
Hello Readers, Well we have been blessed to witness a Black man become President for a second time. That is a miracle by itself. Miracle are real and if we wake up every morning we’ve also witnessed a miracle from God. We have no power accept that which the Lord gives us. We are to be thankful for the grace and mercy of God each day. We hope you take some time to read our front page. It is about Jan Perry, a phenomenal woman who is running for the mayoral seat in Los Angeles. Looking at her record and the witness with my own eyes as to what she has been a driving force behind, especially in downtown Los Angeles, tells me that she already has what it takes to take this city to another level. She has proven her ability to do what is required in a mayor. If we remember right, it was Jan who, when the late great Michael Jackson passed, was responsible for the funeral to be held in downtown Los Angeles, she was acting as mayor then and she did a superb job. Jan is a fighter and she fights for the people. Take some time and browse the article and consider Perry as the right choice.

“We, The People”… Where Do We Go From Here? By Hardy L. Brown This past weekend we heard a lot of “we the people” from President Barack Obama during his second inaugural address and people reciting the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “where do we go from here”. President Obama gave me something to think about as I sat in my chair watching him address the nation. I thought about my upbringing as a child in the segregated south, and my travels over the old route 66 and interstate 40 that we traversed many times from coast to coast. I thought of my marriage of 50 years, on January 26th of this month to my wonderful wife Cheryl. I thought about our wonderful children and their families and the opportunities they now enjoy from the efforts of their ancestors. I thought about how blessed I am to witness the progress of our nation in electing and then re-electing Barack Obama as president of these United States of America. His re-election epitomizes the progress we have made because many wanted to make him a one-term (fluke) president. The nation has turned the corner in including others in the policy making of our government. I reflected on these things and concluded none of this would not have been possible without “we the people” working together as a government. It was President Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglass, Booker T. Washington, and others that fought to help overcome slavery in this country. It was Rosa Parks, Medger Evers, Martin Luther King, Jr., John Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson and others to help tear down the Jim Crow walls of “separate but un-equal” and enacting basic federal civil right laws of equality in employment, commerce, housing, education and the all important voting rights laws which are under attack today. As the inaugural program progressed tears came to my eyes as I reflected on how far we have come as people of different races and genders participating in the program. Not only in government but the diversity of people reporting on the event from several news outlets. I know the efforts and strategies required to integrate a staff from my many years at Southern California Edison and Kaiser Perma-
nente Medical Care Program with the responsibility of recruiting diversity to break down walls from years of legal discrimination. It took people like Geneva Hillman, Clifford Gallup, Oliver Roemer of Edison, Jim Vohs, Dr. Ray Kay, Art Forbes, Robert Erickson and Frank Boeckman of Kaiser to bring diversity to these companies. None of these things would have been possible without “we the people” voting and hiring people of a different races, genders, religions or lifestyles. Where do we go from here is the question most of us have at the top of our conversation lists? It is clear that in order for people to be elected for a large district or statewide office one must embrace diversity. One has to be mindful of women’s issues as we have more women seeking elected office and being elected. With these two groups being involved in the political process means different policies to deal with equal pay, children, seniors, health care, military and foreign countries will be passed. It will mean a change in political party’s platforms and inclusion of the same in leadership positions. This will force corporate America to change their boardrooms and how they outreach into the society that buys and consumes their products. It will mean that taxpayers will be expecting more than lip service when it comes to governing a community and people. It will mean dollars will be directed in a different direction to help the least of us while not taking anything away from the successful ones. With the re-election of President Obama it means our children regardless of race, sex, religion or lifestyle can wake up from a dream and begin the work on making it a reality. We are getting reports that this shift is causing the Republican Party to re-evaluate their outreach strategies. The question for them is what will the more levelheaded members of the party speak out to silence most conservative members. It appears at this moment that the Democratic Party has their act together while not allowing the most liberal thinking, anything goes members to have their way. They must govern wisely and not over reach with unproven ideas. They will govern for a long time if they find the good and praise it and involve “we the people.”
Hands off Malia and Sasha Obama By George E. Curry (NNPA) Just when you think leaders of the National Rifle Association can’t stoop any lower, they keep managing to plunge even deeper. This time, they have strayed way over the line of respectability by using Malia and Sasha’s enrollment in Sidwell Friends, a private Quaker school, to malign President Obama over his proposal to place limits on the sale of assault rifles and expand background checks. “Are the president’s kids more important than yours? Then why is he skeptical about putting armed security in our schools when his kids are protected by armed guards at their school? Mr. Obama demands the wealthy pay their fair share of taxes. But he’s just another elitist hypocrite when it comes to a fair share of security. Protection for their kids. And gun-free zones for ours.” White House Press Secretary Jay Carney was correct when he said in a statement: “Most Americans agree that a president’s children should not be used as pawns in a political fight. But to go so far as to make the safety of the president’s children the subject of an attack ad is repugnant and cowardly.” New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, a Republican, said: “To talk about the president’s children or any public officer’s children who have – not by their own choice, but by requirement – to have protection and use that somehow to make a political point I think is reprehensible.” I am tempted to call NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre and his comrades scum. But I’m going to resist the temptation. Not because they don’t fit that description. I’m restraining myself because to call them scum would be an insult to scum. A second NRA ad, running four-and-a-half-minutes, tossed in an image of NBC newsman David Gregory – whose children also attend Sidwell Friends School – for good measure. The narrator in the ad says “Armed Guards — Good enough for the David Gregory’s kids’ school, not for the rest of us. …[The] school Obama’s daughters attend has 11 armed guards.” Not surprisingly, the ad conveniently ignores the fact that the Secret Service is required to protect the president’s children. They protected Chelsea Clinton and Julie Nixon when they attended the school, known as “the Harvard of Washington’s private schools.” Although the original NRA ad leaves the impression that it is referring to Secret Service agents, the longer version makes it clear that NRA is referencing security guards at the school, which has a lower school campus in Bethesda, Md. and middle and upper schools in northwest Washington, D.C. .The Washington Post’s Fact Checker column awarded the NRA ad four Pinocchios, repre-
senting a “whopper” of a lie. The newspaper noted, “…the online directory for Sidwell Friends lists 11 people as working in the Security Department. Five are listed as ‘special police officer,’ while two are listed as ‘on call special police officer,’ which presumably means they do not work full-time. The directory also lists two weekend shift supervisors, one security officer and the chief of security.“ “… But we spoke to parents who said they had never seen a guard on campus with a weapon. And Ellis Turner, associate head of Sidwell Friends, told us emphatically: ‘Sidwell Friends security officers do not carry guns.’” The NRA’s ad claiming that President Obama is “skeptical about putting armed security in our schools” misrepresents his position. The clip was taken out of context from this exchange between the president and David Gregory on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” GREGORY: Should we have an armed guard at every school in the country? That’s what the NRA believes. They told me last week that that could work. OBAMA: I’m not going to prejudge the recommendations that are given to me. I am skeptical that the only answer is putting more guns in schools. And I think the vast majority of the American people are skeptical that that somehow is going to solve our problem. Clearly, the president did not say he was skeptical about placing armed security guards in schools. Instead, he said that is not “the only answer.” Even more insane, at a press conference, Wayne LaPierre of the NRA asserted that the answer to preventing future incidents like the one at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. is the placement of armed guards in every school. Among the proposals presented by President Obama is providing federal funds to place more officers in schools, if the school requests them. After acting on a specific proposal made by NRA, the gun lobbying organization denounced Obama yet again. After coming under attack by even some conservatives, NRA spokesman Andrew Arulanandam said: “If anyone thinks we’re talking specifically about someone’s children, they’re missing the point completely…”No, that’s exactly the point. Leave those beautiful Obama girls out of your degenerate ad campaigns. George E. Tyler Perry Offering Reward for Tips on Missing Fla. Men By Zenitha Prince From the AFRO.com F L O R I D A — Filmmaker and actor Tyler Perry is offering a $100,000 reward for information on the whereabouts of two missing men of color from Naples, Fla. Terrance Williams and Felipe Santos are considered “missing and endangered,” according to the Collier County Sheriff’s Office, after last being spotted with now-fired sheriff’s deputy Steve Calkins, almost a decade ago. Perry is offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to the discovery of the present whereabouts of either man, for a total of $50,000. Additionally, he is offering a $25,000 reward for information which, following an arrest, leads to a final conviction or plea of guilty or no contest for causing or facilitating the death of Williams or
Santos, also totaling $50,000. The movie mogul made the announcement earlier this month at a press conference in Naples, where he was joined by families of the missing men, the Rev. Al Sharpton of the National Action Network and Benjamin Jealous, president of the NAACP. “This is injustice,” Perry said, according to the Atlanta Daily World. He added, “I don’t think this is about race or social status as much as it is about, no matter who we are, we should be outraged that this is happening in America in 2013.” According to the Collier County Sheriff’s Office, which is part of a multi-agency probe into the disappearances, Perry has maintained a “sincere interest” in the cases, and has brought his star-power to bear in finding answers. “We need the right piece Please see Perry, page 8

CHURCH & RELIGIOUS NEWS The Cecil Murray Center for Community Engagement Collaborate with Faith Based Leaders to Help Find 1000 African American Apprentices By Gloria Zuurveen Editor-in-Chief LOS ANGELES—The room at the Cecil Murray Center for Community Engagement meeting room on Thursday evening was filled to overflow as African American faith-based leaders met to discuss with officials from the City of Los Angeles and MTA about strategies to find more than 1000 apprentices for reinstatement in the Los Angeles Building and Construction Trades. A key piece of workforce development activity generated by the City of Los Angeles, in partnership with the Building Trades, city departments, local agencies, and a number of non-profits including the Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy (LAANE), the United Job Creation Council (UJCC), the UAW WorkSource Center, and the LAUSD We Build Pre-Apprenticeship Training Program. The main focus of the discussion on Thursday was on strategizing MTA job opportunities on the Crenshaw line with USC, Center for Religion and Civic Culture, Rev. Cecil L. Murray and Rev. Mark Whitlock along with staff members representing Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa including: Larry Frank, Deputy Chief of Staff, JC Lacey, Transportation, Senior Manager and John Reamer, Executive Director of Public Works. Questions were asked by faith based leaders referencing whether an all out effort will be put forth to ensure that African Americans are seriously consid-

Black Leaders Supports Jan Perry for Los Angeles Mayor Southland Partnership Corporation, said, “Los Angeles City Councilwoman Jan Perry is the most excellent mayoral candidate because she truly cares for South Los Angeles residents to achieve greater access to quality jobs, training and career opportunities as en elected official for the city she ushered in the new millennium with proven leadership and skills by attracting and expanding her district toward becoming the sports and entertainment capitol of the world. There is no doubt that Ms. Perry will add incomparable value becoming the top executive of Los Angeles.” Jacquelynn Hawthorne, Chairwoman, Los Angeles African American Women Political Action Committee said she is supporting Perry because she is the most viable candidate. “I based that on the probusiness work she has done creating beautiful city skyline meaning LA Live, bringing jobs to the city of Los Angeles,” Hawthorne said. Hawthorne said, “She is caring and sympathetic. She has done a great job for the homeless in the city.” “Jan is singularly qualified and was brought up in a home where both her father and mother were mayors. It’s in her

DNA.” Carolyn Fowler said, “Jan Perry will bring together community, business and the environment to best serve the City of Los Angeles.” Rev. Murray did not hesitate to add his name to the list of Black leaders speaking in support of Perry. He said, “Jan Perry is like January, the beginning of the new cycle. She can take us to a new beginning. Vote, Jan Perry.” Listening to Black leaders, its appears Perry is the candidate with the most qualifications in spite of mainstream reports that she’s the underdog. Bobbie Anderson, of the New Frontier Democratic Club, said, “Jan is by far the best candidate for the mayor’s office given her past record and life story and I support her 100 percent to be our next mayor.” She said, “I think she is underestimated and underrated clearly, I think she is being misjudged. She is a strong, highly competent and qualified candidate.” Anderson said, “I think that her strong record on dealing with the homeless in downtown Los Angeles was a humane effort on her part. She created a strong
interest in downtown with the businesses such as LA Live. She should be credited with revitalizing the downtown area by bringing new jobs to the community.” “And last,” said Anderson, “She really brought the Ninth District coalition of African American, Asians, Latino together which helped to improve the southern part of the Ninth which had been traditionally overlooked. For example, the Dunbar Hotel and the Jazz Festival on Central Avenue.” Reports that candidate Wendy Greuel worked as an aide for Mayor Bradley some 25 years ago is to be commended for her to have served under such a great leader, however, 40 years after Mayor Bradley historic victory to become the first African American mayor of Los Angeles by reaching over racial and ethnic lines, it appears to be the consensus of Los Angeles Black leadership that the one and only one to compare Mayor Bradley achievements in the 2013 mayoral race is Perry, who when elected, will, like, Mayor Bradley, make history as the first African American woman to lead a metropolis like Los Angeles.

HEALTH & COMMUNITY NEWS You Are Unique - Your Nutrition Should Be Too (BPT) - Remember when you were a child and the world was big-- full of adventure and possibility? You ate your favorite cereal for breakfast, lunch and dinner and at the end of every day, your mom would make you take those little multi-flavored vitamins usually shaped like a popular cartoon character. You didn't necessarily understand why you had to take these, but you always did what your mom told you-- because mother knows best. Now you're older, a little wiser, and you still take your vitamins every day-- at least you should. But how do you know if the vitamins you're buying are right for you? You know you're different. You know your nutritional needs aren't the same as your friends, neighbors, and co-workers. You are keenly aware of how much sleep you need to feel vital, which snacks get you through the slowly ticking minutes of the afternoon, and how much exercise is required to
stay on target. But do you understand the crucial role vitamins play in your individual health? Dr. Brian Dixon does. As executive director of scientific and clinical affairs at USANA Health Sciences, Dr. Dixon extensively studies the body's evolving need for vitamins and understands the important functions they play in an individual's health. His primary focus is on the aging process, antioxidants and detoxification. "Dr. Linus Pauling, the only person to win two unshared Nobel prizes, said it best, and even coined a term regarding this issue: orthomolecular medicine," Dr. Dixon says. "That means getting the right molecule or nutrient, at the right time, in the proper or correct dose." Since you're not like anyone else, why would you require the exact same nutrition as everyone else? You don't. And that's where a tool like the USANA's True Health Assess-
The Scourge of Diabetes By Dean L. Jones, C.P.M.
Unfortunately, if not inflicted personally, we have family, friends, neighbors or associates that suffer from the diabetes disease. Type 2 diabetes is preventable by paying attention to the food and beverages consumed. Although there is a lot to this disease, this week I received an email from an associate who gracefully shows why health matters. “Hi Dean, Well, I won't be able to meet this month; my life has changed, for the better. I was hospitalized on July 15th and I am still here in the hospital. I lost my left foot due to being diabetic; it was a shock to me, not for losing my foot, but that God is working through me in this way. Even though being diabetic was the shocker, I never question the Lord in how or what happens to me, he works in mysterious ways, but gets his message across to us. I was rather surprised too, but then when the doctors told me I was Diabetic, I understood why I was going through this stage of my life, as he wants me to become a spokesperson for the Diabetic Community. So, I really have no I’ll feelings about my condition. While my foot was amputated I had a mild heart attack, and have been getting it treated until last Friday, when I was due to have a triple bypass, but instead they put 4 stents on my heart to allow more air to flow through the heart. It is a lot I know, but God has been by my side all along, as I am grateful and very blessed. I now have work to do, after the healing process, and that’s to get the word out. I'll soon have another foot so I’ll still be able to get around and be normal, so that’s what God wants me to do.
ment comes in. The program assessment takes you through a series of questions and then determines the best nutritional supplements and vitamins to support your specific health needs. It's the perfect instrument to help you discover your nutritional needs as well as provide you with a personalized lifestyle plan that evolves as you do. Your lifestyle has an enormous impact on your nutritional needs, but generally speaking, your body requires different nutrients during the distinctive phases of your life. Your 20s and 30s-- a roaring good time During these decades, you may be relatively healthy, but you're busy building a career, starting a family and enjoying a rigorous social life. During this time period, you could benefit from vitamin B12 for energy, vitamin C to boost the immune system, and melatonin to get restorative sleep — all are important when burning the candle at both ends. Preventative measures, such as adding essential fatty acids like omega3s into your diet, are a good idea as well. Your 40s-- where fabu-
lous meets red flags Even though 40 seems to be the new 30, this is the time frame when both men and women usually develop an increased risk of heart disease. Go on the offense by getting annual checkups, setting dietary restrictions and getting plenty of exercise. Adding heart-smart nutrients like vitamin C, folic acid and vitamin E to your daily diet may help promote good cardiovascular health. 50 and above-- a golden era of health awareness At 50 and above, your life experience starts to take physical form. This is the age when major health problems are most likely to arise. Women 50 and older are subject to a higher risk of osteoporosis and should consider calcium and vitamin D for stronger bones. Eyesight deterioration is common in both men and women, so vitamins A, C, and beta-carotene can be helpful in maintaining vision. And don't forget, after years of wear and tear, a supplement with glucosamine can aid in joint health. The nutrients listed above are by no means a comprehensive guide,
but instead an overview on how supplements are designed to fit age and activity. These recommendations are a starting point for most people because vitamins are also unique to each individual's lifestyle choices within those age categories. A tool like USANA's True Health Assessment can help pinpoint your singular nutritional needs at any age. "At its very simplest, we all require the same essential micro- and macro-nutrients," Dr. Dixon says. "However, we are all unique and have different health goals and needs. The True Health Assessment makes it easy to achieve both." You are one of a kind. Your nutritional needs are, too. No longer are you a child being coaxed to take your cartoonshaped vitamins. Mom knew best, and now so do you. It's time to be accountable for your own wellness. Make the effort to discover your specific health needs and decide which nutritional products are right for you. The good news is you don't have to do it alone. The USANA True Health Assessment can help.
Arguments in First J&J Hip Implant Trial Begin in Los Angeles
Dean L. Jones I am now waiting to go to a rehab facility to continue my treatment, until I get my Prosthetic leg. So that’s my reason for me not attending the POWER Collaborative Network meetings, because I have been dying to get back to work in any way possible. I hope all is still going well for you and the members of the group. By the way I certainly didn’t mean to shock you with this news, sorry, but things like this can and do happen to us, and we accept and try to understand that our lord is sending us a message and we then do all we can to try and save someone else from being in this position. I truly believe I was chosen to be in this position by God and I’m so blessed. I will be chatting with you soon Dean. Thanks for listening to me, and God Bless You. By Deena Beasley (Reuters) - Johnson & Johnson was aware of defects when it started selling its now-recalled metal hip implants in 2004, lawyers said on Friday during opening arguments in a personal injury trial against the company. More than 10,000 lawsuits have been filed against J&J after its DePuy unit recalled the all-metal ASR hip implants in 2010 following recognition that they were failing at higher-thanexpected rates. Opening arguments were heard in the first case to reach trial. The suit was filed in California Superior Court b y 6 6 - ye a r -o l d L o r e n Kransky, whose ASR hip was replaced early last year. "I'm sure that ultimately there will be some sort of global settlement," said Georgene Vairo, professor of law at Loyola University in Los Angeles. "But they are going to litigate some cases. Even though it was clear that something was wrong with the product, that may not be the
cause in each individual claim." Kransky's attorney, Michael Kelly, said the ASR hip caused elevated levels of cobalt and chromium in Kransky, while J&J lawyers said the amount of metals shown in tests was not high enough to cause health problems. "Doctors relied 100 percent on DePuy and patients relied 100 percent on doctors and information was kept from them," said Kelly. Lawyers for J&J contend that Kransky, a lifelong smoker suffering from diabetes and eventually kidney cancer, was in extremely poor health, mainly caused by vascular disease, well before he received the ASR hip. "The evidence will show that DePuy is a good and conscientious company," said J&J attorney Alexander Calfo. He said the doctor who removed the ASR implant from Kransky will testify that he was "coached" by the Kransky family and its law-
yers to use certain phrases, including the implication of metal poisoning, in medical records of the procedure. With wear, all-metal implants can shed metal where two components connect, potentially damaging bone and soft tissue. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration last week issued a proposal calling on companies that make all-metal hip replacements to provide additional information proving they are safe and effective before being allowed to continue selling them. The metal implants were developed to be more durable than traditional implants, which combine a ceramic or metal ball with a plastic socket, but concerns have grown after they were shown to fail more often. As many as 500,000 American are estimated to have received metal-on-metal hip replacements. (Reporting By Deena Beasley; Editing by Jilian Mincer and Dan Grebler)

The Black Business Association Hosts 39th Annual Awards Dinner in Recognition of African American Heritage Month LOS ANGELES—In recognition of African American Heritage Month the Black Business Association (BBA), the oldest ethnic business organization on the west coast, will hold its 39th Annual Awards Dinner on Thursday, February 28, 2013 at the Omni Hotel, located at 251 South Olive Street in downtown Los Angeles. Chaired by AT&T, the evening will commence with a reception at 6:00pm followed by the dinner program at 7:00pm and ending with a scrumptious dessert reception. The purpose of the Awards Dinner is to honor corporations, government agencies, businesses and individuals that have been most supportive of the growth and development of the Black Business Association and the African American business community as a whole. With the second inauguration of our first African American president and the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, 2013 is definitely a year to re-
member and an appropriate reason for this year’s African American Heritage Month theme, "At the Crossroads of Freedom and Equality: The Emancipation Proclamation and the March on Washington," which calls upon us to honor the African Americans who overcame injustice and inequality to achieve financial independence and the security of self-empowerment that comes with it. Born out of the need for collective uplift and advocacy, the Black Business Association has continued to advocate and achieve Black Economic Empowerment. As we continue to celebrate over 40 years of service, it is important to recognize the BBA as a solid contributor to the history of the Black Economic Empowerment movement in fighting for inclusion into what has historically been an exclusive economy. The 2013 honorees celebrated are: · Earl “Skip” Cooper II, Please see Black, page 8

From 2009 through 2012, Wells Fargo hosted 82 such workshops across the country where more than 40,000 customers facing payment challenges attended. Many customers received modifications or other loan workouts to help them keep their homes and avoid foreclosure. Options include Wells Fargo’s own loan modification program and the federal government’s Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP). About 75 Wells Fargo home preservation specialist team members, including bilingual specialists, will be on hand at the upcoming workshops to
assist customers. Customers facing mortgage payment difficulties also can call 1-800-678-7986 for more information about potential options to avoid foreclosure. Wells Fargo originates one in every three home loans in the country, and services one of every six. As of the fourth quarter of 2012, nearly 93 percent of Wells Fargo’s mortgage customers nationwide remained current on their loan payments. From January 2009 through November 2012, Wells Fargo has modified 832,626 mortgage loans. Of those modifications, 84 percent were done through Wells Fargo’s own modification programs and 16 percent were through the federal government’s Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP). As of the third quarter in 2012, Wells Fargo’s delinquency and foreclosure rates remain significantly below the industry average. Less than 2 percent of the loans secured by owner-occupied homes and serviced by Wells Fargo resulted in a foreclosure sale in the last 12 months. Just 7.32 percent of the first mortgage and home equity loans Wells Fargo services were past due or in foreclosure in the third quarter of 2012 compared to an industry average of 11.42 percent. Wells Fargo’s totals are down from a peak of 8.96 percent in the fourth quarter of 2009.

STATE / NATION & WORLD NEWS Tyler Perry Offering Reward for Tips on Missing Fla. According to an ABC News story, Calkin claimed he did not take the then-23-year-old Mexican laborer to jail, but dropped him off at a nearby Circle K convenience store. The following January, Wil-
liams, an African-American man who was then 27, also disappeared after an encounter with the deputy. Eyewitnesses said Williams was having trouble with his 1984 white Cadillac in the area of 111th Avenue North and Vanderbilt Drive when Calkin drove up. The deputy said he dropped Williams off at the Circle K and didn’t see him again. The 17-year veteran was fired in August 2004 after giving several “lies and inconsistencies” in his accounts during an internal investigation, according to The Naples Daily News. The Black and Missing Foundation praised Perry, Sharpton and Jealous for their efforts in bringing attention to the disparity in the percentage of the nation’s missing who are people of color, and the scant media coverage usually given to those persons. The NAACP and Minority Media Community Collaborative are Outraged at Time Warner Cable in Columbus COLUMBUS, Ohio, PRNewswire/ -- A major press conference held November 28, 2012 revealed that the Columbus NAACP and the Minority Media C o m m u n i t y C o l l a b o r a ti v e (MMCC) are outraged at Time Warner Cable's continuous refusal to provide local minority programming. Evidence of this blatant disregard is Time Warner Cable's refusal to carry Bounce 23 TV and Azteca Columbus TV, two broadcasters dedicated to serving the African American and Hispanic populations in Columbus, Ohio. Reverend Joel King, cousin of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King said, "Time Warner Cable has hundreds of cable channels available and yet has refused to sign an agreement to carry local minority broadcasters. And to add insult to in-
States who were reported missing in 2011, about 40 percent, or 270,680 individuals, were people of color. “Unfortunately, the disappearance of Terrance Williams and Felipe Santos are all too common in our communities,” BAM co-founder Natalie Wilson said in a statement. “But with scant media attention yet plenty of stereotypes and other presumptions, this sector of the missing population has largely gone under the radar.” The families of the miss-
ing men have also expressed their thanks to Perry for his generosity and advocacy. “After years of painful struggle concerning my son's disappearance I still refuse to accept anything other than finding a resolution to this nightmare,” said Marcia Williams, mother of Terrance Williams. “I will forever be grateful for what Mr. Tyler Perry has done for me and my missing child. He puts the truth into the saying, ‘pay it forward.’

The NAACP and Minority Media Community Collaborative are Outraged at Time Warner Cable in Columbus (Continued from page 8) Columbus' population is minority (28% African American, 6% Hispanic and 5% other) and they spend approximately $72 million dollars per year in cable service fees. Yet they are completely denied local minority programming. Time Warner Cable, which controls 60% of the Columbus cable market, recently merged with
Insight Communications (30% of the market) and now has a virtual monopoly with 90% of the television cable services in Columbus, Ohio.
