State Senator Rod Wright Convicted of Perjury, Voter Fraud By Gloria Zuurveen Editor-in-Chief LOS ANGELES—State Sen. Rod Wright, D-Inglewood, faces up to eight years and four months in jail when he is sentenced on March 12 after being found guilty and convicted of perjury and voter fraud on Tuesday by a jury. According to reports, Wright was convicted of five charges of fraudulent voting, two counts of perjury, and filing a false declaration of candidacy. During the trial, prosecutors said Wright lived in Baldwin Hills and not in Inglewood as he had claimed. The Daily Democrat, a northern California newspaper said, “Wright could be the first California legislator in more than a century to be expelled by colleagues. He's likely to at least lose his

powerful committee chairmanship.” However, State Senate leader Darrell Steinberg said Thursday in an interview with the Los Angeles Times that he will not seek expulsion of state Sen. Roderick Wright until an appeal is decided that finalizes the felony convictions. Steinberg said in the interim he will honor Wright's request to remove him as chairman of the Senate Governmental Organization Committee. He said he would be prepared to act if the initial appeal is denied and an appellate court does not stay the sentence pending further appeals. Regarding the verdict, Wright, 61, said to the Times in an interview that he was disappointed but life moves on. He said, “You have to assess where you are and what your options
are. John Hrabe, Writer and Communications Strategist, for FoxandHoundsDaily.com, said, "Wright may have lied to get elected, but he’s been one of the few truth-tellers in Sacramento. Ask Republicans and Democrats, members and staff, lobbyists and reformers. They’ll tell you Wright always provides a refreshing dose of honesty, while the rest of the building is busy delivering spin. His commitment to the truth has often put him at odds with his Democratic colleagues.” He added, “Yep, State Senator Rod Wright just might be the only politician in California that consistently tells the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Except for when it comes to where he lives.”

Little Angels Nursery School Burns WINDSOR HILLS—Los Angeles County Fire Capt. Brian Jordan said at 11:58 am the Los Angeles County fire department was called to the Little Angels Nursery School in the Windsor Hills area of South Los Angeles in the 3800 block of West 54th Street. It took 75 Los Angeles City and Los Angeles County firefighters to douse the blaze in approximately 35 to 45 minutes. No one was inside the building at the time. Four turtles were rescued from the building. It is unclear how the fire started. The building has been redtagged. Firefighters say the roof on the east side of the school collapsed and there is heavy damage

About 100 kids, ages 2 months to 5 years old, attend the school. There is also extended daycare for children up to 12 years old. Students will have classes in two smaller buildings on the property Monday. The blaze reportedly started in the attic of the Little Angels preschool. The family-owned school had reportedly been in business for 46 years The school is described as an institution by the neighborhood. The school’s owners said the

Ms. Stevenson was told she wouldn’t be allowed in the classroom for at least 120 days. Brown gathered with fellow alumni Thursday looking for answers. “She’s touched lives of inner-city children around the world and to kill that off for no reason is unjust,” she told KCAL9′ s Adrianna Weingold. A lot of them didn’t have food or their parents weren’t there for them. Ms Stevenson was there for them,” Horton said. In the meantime, Brown says Ms. Stevenson has to report to the so-called “teacher jail” – a district office downtown where she sits and waits everyday. School officials declined to say why Ms. Stevenson isn’t being allowed on campus when contacted by KCAL9. A spokesperson would only say that it’s a personnel matter.

EDITORIAL/OPINION Publisher’s Column
Dr. Gloria Zuurveen President, CEO, Founder and Publisher
Hello Readers,
We are in the last week of the new year already. Time is passing very fast. I am grateful to the Lord that I am still here and I do not take it for granted that He allowed to me to live. We have a purpose and a reason for taking up God’s air that we breath and while we have a chance we are to do what we can for the brother man. It is our to give what is needful. However, as it is said on page seven we are to have equal access to opportunities within the city and county of Los Angeles. The fact that when we drive around this city day in and day out and can barely see a black man or woman working on these quality public works job is a sin against God. God will for all men to be treated with dignity and with human rights to economic justice. It is time to stand and take action on the part of what is a detriment to us as a people.

When Black Men Flex, Society Gets Scared By Walter Fields By chance I watched the NFC Championship football game at the home of a friend and former college football player, Vaughn McKoy. Of course, it was Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman who stole the show. Sherman’s infamously aggressive postgame interview triggered a debate over the appropriateness of his comments. For two Black men watching the game, few words needed to be spoken. I can’t express how much I loved Sherman’s passion and defiance. Here was a young Black man who takes extreme pride in his craft and is unafraid to proclaim himself the best at what he does. Sherman’s post-game proclamation was vintage Muhammad Ali. And like the boxing legend, the young Seattle defensive star is taking hits because he has enough self-confidence to proclaim himself the best. When Donald Trump does it, he’s called confident, or a genius. When Richard Sherman does it he is belittled as an arrogant n----r. What a different nation we would be if more Black men felt free enough to claim their greatness; free enough to speak their mind; and bold enough to care less what others thought. The criticism of Sherman has been patently racist and in some instances, simply ignorant. Here is a professional athlete, at the top of his game, who warned that the opposition could not make a play on him. In his interview with ESPN’s Erin Andrews, who eventually defended Sherman, he did not use foul language or use an obscene gesture, but simply made it clear that he was better than his opponent. I thought that’s what athletic competition was about. Channeling “the Greatest,” the Seahawk did not back down from his prior proclamations that the receiver in question, San Francisco’s Michael Crabtree, was mediocre. Whether that charge is legitimate or not, you can’t dispute the fact that Sherman lived up to his bravado. This episode is just another reminder that society likes its Black men docile, silent and intimidated. Sherman’s real offense is that he violated the social norm in America. How dare this young
Black man proclaim himself the best? How arrogant that Sherman did not act more “gracefully” in victory and more diplomatically in his response. There would have been no “chatter” about Sherman had he responded in a more subdued manner. In fact, he would have been hailed as a “model” athlete, as someone worthy of adulation and emulation by youth. Instead, this bright, articulate and intelligent Stanford grad is attacked because he wasn’t Negro enough. When Black men flex society, gets scared. We are not supposed to be intelligent and confident enough to recognize our own value. We are expected to be subservient and to show deference to everyone, particularly those who theoretically exercise political or economic control over us. It is the residual residue of an era when we had to walk with heads lowered at the sight of a White person and dared not make eye contact. Sherman held his head high and let the country know he knows how good he is. It was one of the most refreshing moments of television I have viewed in ages. Black men who flex have always upset the nation’s equilibrium. It was the defiance of Robeson, King, Malcolm, Huey, Elijah and Stokely that frightened America, more so than their actions against the nation. It is one thing to be great, it is quite another to know it and to not be diminished in your greatness by the insecurities of others. Black boys are demoralized in school buildings and scarce in the classroom. Black boys are emboldened by criminality and are disproportionately behind prison bars. Society takes great pleasure in emasculating Black males. I have seen it in the way Black men in executive positions in corporations and notfor-profit organizations cower and meekly subscribe to actions that further marginalize the masses. Many Black men have accepted their role to be barely seen and not heard. In one glorious unrehearsed moment of defiance, Sherman exhaled for many of us. What a different nation we would be if more Black men felt free enough to claim their greatness, free enough to speak their mind, and bold enough to care less what others thought. I’ll take Richard Sherman on my team any day. Walter Fields is Executive Editor of NorthStarNews.com.
“Mo’ Money, Mo’ Money” By James Clingman Remember that movie with the Wayans Brothers? After stealing some credit cards, Damon’s character, Johnny Stewart, had everything he ever thought he wanted. He spent a lot of money on “things” and still found himself with more than enough cash to do whatever he wanted. I am also reminded of another movie back in the 1980’s, Wall Street, that featured the infamous Gordon Gekko whose mantra was “Greed is good.” When King Solomon wrote, “Money answereth all things,” I don’t think he had Stewart and Gekko in mind. To expand on that point, the Pope and President Obama will be kickin’ it in March to discuss the issue of economic inequality, which is graphically described by the following three points cited in an Oxfam Briefing Paper: “The wealth of the richest one percent in the world amounts to $110 trillion. That’s 65 times the total wealth of the bottom half of the world’s population;” “The bottom half of the world’s population [3.5 billion people] owns the same as the richest 85 people in the world;” “In the US, the wealthiest one percent captured 95 percent of post-financial crisis growth since 2009, while the bottom 90 percent became poorer.” Do I have your attention? It is definitely too large a number for me to wrap my brain around, but I do know that $110 trillion dispersed among just 85 families is a whole lot of jack! That makes Gordon Gekko and all of his friends look like paupers, and Johnny Stewart isn’t even in the game. What does this mean to Black folks in the United States? And let’s not even talk about the other countries. Last week’s column was titled, “The revolution must be financed,” which pointed out that everything we say we want and need to do begins and/or ends with someone writing a check. Juxtapose that fact against the Oxfam report and marinate for a while on our relative economic position in this country. During the housing collapse Black people lost an estimated $1 trillion in wealth, more than any other group. We were already way behind before the recession; where do you think we are now?
What is our children’s economic position? What does the future hold for Black Americans, collectively, especially since we are a microcosm of the world’s wealth concentration model? That’s right; we have the same relative situation going on with Black money. A small percentage of Blacks holds a large percentage of all Black wealth. You know the most popular ones, from Oprah and Bob Johnson on down to the entertainers and athletes, but there are other business owners whom many of us have never heard of who hold billions as well. This not an effort to make them out to be culprits; this is merely about facts, and then what if anything you are willing to do to help change your and our situation. Now let’s get one thing straight, those 85 families are not going to come to our neighborhoods and drop bags of money from helicopters, and the richest Black folks are not going to do that either. As a matter of fact, some of them are too busy being Johnny Stewart (Gotta have that bling). So once again the call goes out to our people to look at the facts and get with the program. Economic inequality will always be with us; therefore, we must not waste our time and resources trying to reach “equality;” we simply need to spend as much time raising our individual and collective wealth as we spend trying to have an impact on politics. It is now estimated that Black people in the U.S. have exceeded $1 trillion in annual income, which only means something positive to those on the receiving end of that money. Income vs. wealth? No brainer, right? Yes, it takes some sort of income to create wealth, but it will also take good stewardship and “common cents” among our people to reach the lofty heights of economic stability. Look at economic indicators across the board and you will find Black folks at the bottom of every category. Unemployment, business growth (not start-ups), Black owned firms with employees, average annual sales revenue, poverty, health, education, and a lack of structured economic empowerment initiatives are challenges to our wellbeing and future prosperity and, if not changed, will prove to be our demise. And they say our economy is doing much better, that it’s growing. For whom? Our President subscribes to the Reagan model of economics that says, “A rising tide lifts all boats.” I say, if you have no boat a rising tide can also drown you. Blacks need to get mo’ money, buy some boats, and get in on this rising tide of economic prosperity.

Women Forging Ahead in STEM Fields By Alexis Taylor From the AFRO Glennae Williams is still months away from her May 17 graduation, but is already on the path to making her Southwest Baltimore community of Mt. Winans proud. Not only is she set to graduate with a baccalaureate degree from Morgan State University, but she is doing so as an industrial engineering major—adding her name to the short list of African-American women scientists making headway for other minorities. “I always liked math, so engineering wasn’t so far from what I thought I would be able to possibly do,” said Williams,
who comes from a family of civil engineers. With a job already lined up for her at the Johns Hopkins University Physics Lab, Williams is just one example of what it means to exhibit grace under pressure. Aside from balancing her own difficult courses with the academic and personal challenges that come with entering the workforce, Williams has also helped her mother battle multiple sclerosis and breast cancer, the latter diagnosis coming during Williams’ senior year. “She was leaving class to help me get up in the morning—doing homework and
Know What Employers Want Before Applying To Be In Law Enforcement (BPT) - With the economy improving, more job opportunities are appearing, giving today's students openings to show prospective employers their skills and professional talents. However, the job market is still competitive, and students need to know - and then acquire - the skills prospective employers want. In the law enforcement industry, the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts demand for police officers and detectives will increase 5 percent through the year 2022. This growth will make jobs available, but applicants must expect competition for these jobs. Having knowledge of what traits and skills law enforcement agencies across the country want in candidates will help students strongly compete for open positions. Carl Cooper, chair for the Criminal Justice Program for Westwood College's Chicago O'Hare Airport Campus, shares background information provided by members of Westwood's program advisory council as well as training officers and supervisors from the Chicago Police Department, Harwood Heights Police Department and Franklin Park Police Department: Writing and communication skills for law enforcement Report writing is an important part of the job for law enforcement officers, and departments are looking for officers who can communicate well in those reports. They have the potential for being reviewed by other officers, by the media, involved in court cases, and reviewed by many other professionals, which is why good communication skills are so important. What may surprise some applicants is that these writing skills are exactly that - often handwritten. Many departments don't have the high-tech computer systems found in the detective shows on TV, making computer skills less important than
effective communication skills, both written and oral. Ethics/integrity Police officers may face many ethical issues on a daily or weekly basis, and how an officer behaves in these situations could affect an individual, business or even the community as a whole. Westwood College requires all criminal justice students to complete an ethics course to ensure they're prepared for the law enforcement working environment. Community involvement Many police departments require their officers to live within the community. Officers involved in the community are more effective in their careers. "Students enrolled in the Criminal Justice program at Westwood College are shown how effective the community involvement is during their tenure at Westwood," Cooper says. "For example, this past holiday season, students worked with the Franklin Park [Ill.] Police Department to collect toys for 13 adopted families in the community. Students also helped officers wrap and deliver the toys, seeing firsthand the community connection those families made with the department." Physical fitness for law enforcement applicants Applicants shouldn't be surprised that physical fitness is a requirement for most positions. Physical fitness prior to and during the testing process is critical if you want to get the career of your choice. Students wanting to be competitive for those open positions should begin additional physical training on their own. These helpful hints about the law enforcement market, and what's expected of candidates for jobs, were designed to help candidates have an edge when applying for those open positions. And even with the job market improving, that edge is important to getting the best position possible.
helping me when I was in pain,” said mother, DaVeeta White. “She wasn’t always successful, sometimes she failed a class for not getting all her work in, or because she missed a major test when I was having surgery.” W i l l i a ms e ve n t u a l l y learned to balance her caregiver duties with the rigorous challenges she faced at Morgan State. “She worked for me for about three years and she has led our student organization, the Pre-freshman Accelerated Curriculum in Engineering, or PACE,” said Dr. Carl White, no relation, the associate dean of the School of Engineering at Morgan State. “Glennae has done very well, and she has been very influential in running the tutoring program during the semester.” Upon receiving her degree, Williams will join the ranks of African American women scientists, which according to the U.S. Department of Commerce, are few in number. Though women of all races make up 48 percent of the Americans clocking into work everyday, only 24 percent of those women are
checking into jobs in a STEMrelated field. According to information from the U.S. Census, though African American women make up 10 percent of the workforce, only 6.7 percent are actively employed in a STEM field. Whether these women are working in hospitals or universities, their numbers are limited but growing thanks to programs such as the HBCUUndergrad Program, an organization focused on increasing the number of African Americans in STEM fields. “Women of our backgrounds do not move up in the professional ladder like men do,” said Claudia Rankins, a program officer for the National Science Foundation. “In academia, they sort of fall off between the associate and full professor level.” “HBCU-UP is designed to make sure that HBCUs are competitive with other institutions that have bigger resources,” she said. “We also help them continue to stay current and continue to move forward by funding individual projects or institutions, upgrading equipment, employing new
teaching strategies, and involve undergraduates in research.” As the semester winds down, Williams said her goal is all the more clear— especially after seeing how few and far between her peers are. “It’s such a great accomplishment, but it’s hard for me to see because I’m at an HBCU- not only do I see a lot of African Americans but I see a lot of women,” Williams said. “When we go outside of the realm of the HBCU, to events at different companies, it’s a shock. I can’t believe we’re not out there. I can’t believe we are not represented.” Williams said she is looking forward to starting her work at Johns Hopkins as a process improvement specialist, a contract position through Grove Resource Solutions, Inc. “I just hope to leave a good impression,” she said, “not only for Morgan State University’s School of Engineering, but for African Americans and for my age group. We are intelligent, we can be professional and we can get the job done.”

HEALTH & COMMUNITY NEWS Ask the Pharmacist: Understanding the Dangers of Low Blood Sugar (BPT) - The numbers are astounding - nearly 400 million people worldwide suffer from diabetes and many patients may not realize they are at risk for a condition known as hypoglycemia. Hypoglycemia is characterized as dangerously low blood sugar levels that could cause serious side-effects including hospitalization. Jay Belcher, is a specialist pharmacist in Express Scripts Diabetes Therapeutic Resource Center, and counsels patients who may not be aware of their risk for hypoglycemia. "Normally, our body has a natural response that is triggered when blood sugar levels drop below a normal level," says Belcher. "However, in some people
with diabetes, this response is impaired. Certain medications used to treat diabetes, such as insulin, can also prevent glucose levels from easily returning to the normal range." There are certain people at increased risk for hypoglycemia - including those with chronic diabetes and type 1 diabetes patients. "People with type 1 diabetes are at increased risk because they may not show early warning signs of low blood glucose, a condition called hypoglycemia unawareness," says Belcher.- "This means an individual no longer experiences early warning symptoms such as shakiness, sweating, anxiety and hunger; raising their risk of lapsing into severe hypoglycemia."
Public Safety By Dean L. Jones, CPM Former Los Angeles Chief of Police and current City Councilman Bernard Parks is committed to public safety. In a recent action before the city council, he filed a motion to place a legal buying age for energy drinks. CBS News printed a quote by Councilman Parks saying; "If you’re in this mode of drinking this energy drink, instead of eating your breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and you’re using it to stay up for long periods of time, and you’re not sleeping, you’re in danger of injuring yourself and causing health problems." This is a superb effort by city officials to help their constituents gain a greater understanding surrounding the hazards of consuming high levels of caffeine and processed sugar. In view of that, I am constantly appreciative for PACE News having a dedicated health section, publishing over 400 weekly SugarAlert articles on related health concerns. One such article shared how in a healthy person, blood sugar (glucose) levels are metabolized roughly within an hour after eating, except consuming caffeine will raise blood sugar levels much longer. Energy drinks are full of caffeine that raises blood sugar levels, thereby causing the body to put out large amounts of adrenalin making the cells in the body less responsive to insulin. Bear in mind that energy drink sales generate close to $10 billion annually, so when big business is raking in the money, poor health is considered hapless collateral damage. Apart from, the parents who filed in Superior Court of California-County of Riverside a lawsuit for the death of their teenage daughter, Anais Fournier, who overdosed on drinking lots of Monster energy drinks. Dean L. Jones lack of good nutrition and adequate sleep, but energy drink makers take advantage by stating their product remedies that problem. Some daily diets (addiction) consist of drinking highly caffeinated and sugar-laden ingredients from the numerous energy drinks manufactured by Monster, Red Bull, 5Hour Energy, Rockstar, CocaCola and PepsiCo. The Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration reports that hospital emergencyroom visits of people consuming energy drinks doubled in four years from 10,000 in 2007 to 20,000 in 2011. This distressing rate will undoubtedly continue to rise when just one 24-ounce can of Monster Energy drink has 2,500 mg of caffeine or 8 times over the daily recommended safe quantity of 200-300 milligrams (mg) of caffeine to consume. Science shows caffeine to be useful to our health when consumed within the recommended limits, where together with coffee beans and caffeine there are properties that stabilize blood sugar levels while possibly helping to prevent rectal and colon cancer, Parkinson and Alzheimer diseases. Even so, stay SugarAlert! www.SugarAlert.com Dean Jones, Ethics Advocate, Southland Partnership Corporation (a public benefit organization), contributes his view on consuming various unwholesome packaged foods and beverages.
It's important for all diabetes patients to remember that hypoglycemia is usually mild and can be treated quickly and easily by consuming a small amount of a glucose-rich food or drink. Unfortunately the condition can rapidly worsen causing confusion, clumsiness or fainting; in fact, severe hypoglycemia can lead to seizures, coma and even death. Belcher offers the following tips to help prevent hypoglycemia: * Timing is everything: As with all medications, always take your diabetes medications in the recommended dosage and at the recommended times. Some diabetes medications can cause hypoglycemia. If you have questions, talk to your physician or
specialist pharmacist who can help explain how and when to take these medications. * Watch what you eat: Following a meal plan is important for managing diabetes. Have enough food during each meal, avoid skipping meals and try healthy snacking (if recommended). If you are struggling with your food intake, work with a registered dietician who can help design a meal plan that fits your personal preferences and lifestyle. Eating right will help you manage your diabetes. * Exercise responsibly: Check your blood glucose before sports, exercise, or other physical activity and adjust medication if necessary. Plus, have a snack handy if your levels fall below 100
milligrams per deciliter (mg/ dL). Also, check blood glucose at regular intervals during extended periods of physical activity and periodically after physical activity and adjust medications if necessary. * Limit alcohol consumption: Drinking alcoholic beverages, especially on an empty stomach, can cause hypoglycemia. Heavy drinking can be particularly dangerous for people taking insulin or medications that increase insulin production. Only consume alcohol with a snack or meal. Heart Attack Proof: How To Give Yourself a Cardiac Makeover (BPT) - It's not cancer, accidents or even old age - the leading cause of death in both men and women in the United States is cardiovascular disease, which includes heart attack and stroke. The good news is that this killer is highly preventable and controllable. By taking the right steps and working closely with your doctor, you can help prevent heart attack and stroke at any age. Bestselling author Dr. Michael Ozner, a board-certified cardiologist, a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and of the American Heart Association, and medical director of Wellness and Prevention at Baptist Health South Florida, knows when it comes to your heart, a proactive approach is best. Here are some of his top tips to help you start your own cardiac makeover: Eat the Mediterranean way A Mediterranean diet is ideal for heart health because it mainly consists of fruits, vegetables, olive oil, whole grains, legumes, nuts, fish and poultry. It is low in saturated fat and contains more of the healthy fats that support heart function. -When embracing a heart-healthy diet, it's also best to limit sugar, salt, red meat, trans fats or processed foods. Drink to heart health If you drink alcohol, the key is to do so in moderation. Consume no more than one drink for a woman and two drinks for a
man in a 24-hour period. One drink equals 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine or 1.5 ounces of spirits. Catch heart health with fish oil Fish oil supplements are clinically proven to support cardiovascular health. Since the typical American doesn't consume enough omega-3s from healthy food sources, a quality fish oil is the best option to ensure adequate intake. Remember, not all fish oil supplements are created equal when shopping, get a certificate of analysis from the company and compare results for purity, freshness and potency. For example, Nordic Naturals provides this information to customers, which includes guidelines from leading organizations on toxins, oxidation and heavy metals. Know your biomarkers Comprehensive blood tests by a health care professional reveal important biomarkers that can help you understand your heart health and where to make improvements. Biomarkers go beyond standard cholesterol tests to reveal hidden risks. When it comes to heart health, knowledge is power, and when you and your doctor know your biomarkers, you both can come up with an intervention and therapy plan to correct any abnormalities. Step up for heart health Make it your goal to walk 10,000 steps each day - the equiva-
lent of 60 minutes of moderateintensity exercise. Track your progress with a pedometer. It can become addictive to check that little device and see the number increase. If you're not very physically active, start slow and work your way up. Start by walking at least 30 minutes per day and boost your steps by walking during your lunch break, taking the stairs rather than the elevator, and walking in place while watching TV. Melt away stress Stress is an enemy of heart health, but we all know that it's difficult to avoid stress completely. BUSINESS & COMMUNITY NEWS Black Men Absent from Los Angeles County Public Works Project By Gloria Zuurveen Editor-in-Chief “The bottom line is, Michelle and I want every child to have the same chance this country gave us. But we know our opportunity agenda won’t be complete – and too many young people entering the workforce today will see the American Dream as an empty promise – unless we do more to make sure our economy honors the dignity of work, and hard work pays off for every single American.” President Barack Obama State of Union Address LOS ANGELES—President Barack Obama addressed the nation on Tuesday evening and his overall emphasis was on building up the economy with people who have decent work so they can take care of their families. Millions were watching and millions can relate to the words of the president because they are the ones he were talking about. He said that he know that he and Michelle’s opportunity agenda won’t be complete and that too many young people entering the workforce today will see the American Dream as an empty promise unless we do more to make sure our economy honors the dignity of work, and hard work pays off for every single American. He is correct and for the people of the city and county of Los Angeles this statement is more real today that ever before for black Angelenos. Almost any day of the week as I drive down the streets of Los Angeles, I see just about everybody except black men and women working on major public works projects. Many of the public works project are what I consider to me “meat” jobs and not “Top Ramen” jobs whereby one can actually make enough to afford a “Lawry’s” steak dinner for the family and not have to be subject to eating a five for a dollar “Top Ramen” noodle meal for a family of four. This is what the President, I believe, was referring to when he young people entering the workforce today will see the American Dream as an empty promise unless we do more to make sure our economy honors the dignity of work and not some for a few or a certain group but for all its citizens. It is time for our black elected officials in the city and county to get pass making excuses as to why black men and women are not working on these major projects. The black people of Los Angeles city and county who pay taxes must speak out against those same taxes not being used for the betterment of black people but instead are being used for the uplifting of others through economic empowerment due to meaningful and livable wage jobs. Just the other day as I was driving down La Brea Avenue near 62nd street, I witnessed first hand as I had done many times before, men, not black men, working on a county public works project.
I decided to capture the evidence on camera and give a real face to the often talked about scenarios that continues day in and day out throughout Los Angeles. I truly believe in economic human rights like Chokwe Lumumba, mayor of Jackson, Mississippi. Lumumba said during an interview on Democracy Now after his election as mayor in June 2013, “Development is one of the tracks or one of the roads to human rights and to the recognition of human rights, especially our economic human rights. And some of that development is going
to take the kind of leadership and the kind of consistency that we had in the struggle for voting rights and other kinds of rights, which has been unique to our history.” While taking pictures of the “no-black workers”, I was asked by an older black man, who was sitting and observing all the other workers who were not black, what was I doing? I said observing and documenting what I see. He said to me that black men did not want to work. He said they will not come down and fill out applications for jobs when
they are posted and that if they would pull up their pants they may be able to get a job. He said that the county hire independent contractors and they have no control over who the contractors hire to get the work done. He refused to give me his name and when I inquired about who are the contractor I was not given the name or any information. I encourage all who are concerned about blacks not working on municipal public works project to contact your elected officials by way of phone call, a visit to
their offices or call community meetings and organize to halt projects that do not hire blacks. What is going on in Los Angeles county and the city is tantamount to apartheid. It is oppression to the utmost and if black leaders will not do more to make sure our economy honors the dignity of work for blacks like other groups then there will be a next time at the ballot box and we can make a change. ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT NEWS Lennon Bus’ Imagine Party with Sheila E By Ricky Richardson Anaheim- The John Lennon Educational Tour Bus (Lennon bus) made a return trip to the 2014 NAMM Show on January 22nd26th, at the Anaheim Convention Center. The Lennon Bus was stationed in a new highly visible location on the centralized Grand Plaza next to the NAMM GoPro Stage. The John Lennon Educational Tour Bus is a non-profit 501(c) (3) state-of-the-art mobile audio and HD video recording and production facility. In its seventeenth year, the bus is equipped with the very newest technology and gear. The Bus continues to be dedicated to providing young people with tours of the studio and participation in free songwriting and multimedia production workshops. Under the guidance of three on-board engineers, students got a hands on lesson on how to write, perform, record and produce original songs, produce and shoot music videos and documentaries and complete a broad quality music videoall in one day! On that note, Wednesday, January 22nd, Art Alexakis, lead singer for the band, Everclear, was on hand as a guest songwriting mentor to work with students from LACM- Los Angeles College of Music. Art Alexakis was recently named the head of the College’s new songwriting program. Alexakis worked with students in creating an original song and video, that was premiered on Friday, January 24th, part of the Lennon Bus’s annual Imagine Party. The finish product of the students from LACM was shown to officially kick-off the Lennon Bus Tour 2014. The crowd and I looked on in amazement at the original song and video shown on the huge flat-screen monitor that was composed and produced in one day. The song per-

Sheila E was the featured performer for the 2014 Lennon Bus Imagine Party. It didn’t take much effort for NAMM Show attendees to get in a party mode. An argument could be made that Grand Plaza was simmering in anticipation of Sheila E taking the stage. Sheila E and her tight band
entertained the crowd with a spicy set of solid in the pocket grooves that dares you to stay immobile. The unofficial motto of the evening was “If you feel the groove; MOVE! As in dance. The crowd danced throughout their hour and half long set to the tunes “Holly rock,” “Lovely Day,” “Koo-Koo,” “A Love Bizarre,” “Leader of the Band,” “Glamorous Life,” and a fantastic arrangement of “When the Saints Go Marching In,” to name a few. I didn’t stay to the end to see if NAMM Show attendees formed a Conga line back to the Convention Center.

Enthusiastic Crowd Greets Opening of “Ella: First Lady of Song” By Ariel Medley A star-studded evening bursting with jazz, scat, bebop and blues took place inside MetroStage for the opening night performance of legendary actor, singer and choreographer Maurice Hines’ latest musical, “Ella: First Lady of Song.” Starring the talented actress and singer Freda Payne as Ella Fitzgerald, Hines’ musical highlights the pivotal moments in Fitzgerald’s life that transformed her into a world-renowned legend. The musical gives insight into Fitzgerald’s private and often publicized love life, her personal struggles as an African-American singer in a segregated nation, and her intimate battles with family, motherhood, and stardom. Beginning with her early years as an amateur performing at Apollo Stage, the story follows her to her grand performance alongside Duke Ellington, Ray Brown, and Joe Pass at the Côte d’Azur in the south of France. “Freda Payne was my first choice for this role,” Hines told the AFRO. “I wouldn’t have chosen anyone else. Ella and Freda, they are so great, so lovely and purely authentic. You just don’t see that kind of authenticity anymore.” Payne’s sharp and sultry vocals soared throughout the theatre, captivating audiences with songs such as “Sing Me a Swing Song,” “A Tisket-A-Tasket,” “Sweet Georgia Brown,” The Lady
is a Tramp,” and “Mackie’s Back in Town.” Payne’s ability to scat, bebop, and sing in the same key as Fitzgerald brought the songs to life, much to the enjoyment of the audience, who clapped, sang, and danced in their seats to the music. “Ella Fitzgerald affected me a lot,” Payne said. “She got me to appreciate jazz, jazz singers, and good singers, like Sarah Vaughan, Carmen McRae, Betty Carter and Dinah Washington.” Payne urged aspiring singers and performers, to “listen to the songs of the past… I had the advantage of growing up and being around these iconic ladies and seeing them as role models. The key is to listen to the songs of the past.” Payne was accompanied
by a five-member jazz band featuring the talents of William Knowles on piano, Greg Holloway on drums, Grant Langford on sax, Doug Pierce on trumpet, and Yusef Chisholm on bass. In addition to giving a phenomenal performance, the musicians also doubled as Chick Webb and his Orchestra, each portraying members of Fitzgerald’s longtime band. Joined on stage by a purely dynamic cast, the musical features the rich and soulful vocals of actress/singer Roz White as Fitzgerald’s cousin, assistant, and traveling companion Georgiana; the soft and sensuous voice of Wynonna Smith, who gave a lively and comedic performance as a young Fitzgerald, and later on played the part of Fitzgerald’s sister Frances; and a wonderfully energetic performance by Tom Wiggin as Fitzgerald’s longtime friend and manager, Norman Granz, who was determined to produce a show in a club that permitted Black audiences. Together, Hines and MetroStage’s producing artistic director, Carolyn Griffin, put on a phenomenal show which brought out enthusiastic patrons and celebrity support: Dick Gregory and his daughter, Ayanna, Debbie Morgan of “Eve’s Bayou,” and brothers John and Leo Manzari, stars of Hines’ hit production, “Tappin’ Thru Life.”

STATE / NATIONAL & WORLD NEWS Obama Hopes to Sidestep Congress To Have ‘a Year of Action’ By George E. Curry WASHINGTON (NNPA) – With a largely uncooperative, highly-partisan Congress headed into a mid-term election, President Obama declared in his State of the Union speech Tuesday night that he will have ‘a year of action’ by expanding economic opportunity through executive orders and other action that do not require legislative approval. “I’m eager to work with all of you,” Obama said in a speech that lasted a little longer than an hour. “But America does not stand still – and neither will I. So wherever and whenever I can take steps without legislation to expand opportunity for more American families, that’s what I’m going to do.” Repeating many of the themes he sounded in his State of the Union speech a year ago – and having seen congressional inaction on most of them – a frustrated Barack Obama promised to be more aggressive in using the power of the presidency. In glowing review of his first five years in office, Obama said, “Here are the results of your efforts: The lowest unemployment rate in over five years. A rebounding housing market. A manufacturing sector that’s adding jobs for the first time since the 1990s. More oil produced at home than we buy from the rest of the world – the first time that’s happened in nearly twenty years. Our deficits – cut by more than half. And for the first time in over a decade, business leaders around the world have declared that China is no longer the world’s number one place to invest; America is.” He continued, “…The question for everyone in this chamber, running through every decision we make this year, is whether we are going to help or hinder this progress. For several years now, this town has been consumed by a rancorous argument over the proper size of the federal government. It’s an important debate – one that dates back to our very founding. But when that debate prevents us from carrying out even the most basic functions of our democracy – when our differences shut down government or threaten the full faith and credit of the United States – then we are not doing right by the American people.” A major theme of the president’s speech was providing expanded opportunity for all Americans – an opportunity to get a job, to earn fair wages, to get an education and to have access to affordable health care. Today, after four years of economic growth, corporate profits and stock prices have rarely been higher, and those at the top have never done better. But average wages have barely budged. Inequality has deepened. Upward mobility has stalled. The cold, hard fact is that even in the midst of recovery, too many Americans are working more than ever just to get by – let alone get ahead. And too many still aren’t working at all.” Unlike past State of the Union speeches, Obama did not call for higher tax rates on highincome earners. He also toned down his rhetoric on income inequality from a month ago when he called it “the defining challenge of our time” and re-

ferred to a “dangerous and growing inequality and lack of upward mobility.” A recent report by Oxfam, a London based organization that seeks to eradicate poverty, found that the wealth of 1 percent of the richest people in the world ($110 trillion) is 65 times the total wealth of the bottom half of the world’s population. The Tax Policy Center, a joint venture of the Urban Institute and the Brookings Institution, collected data that shows the top fifth of the U.S. population receives 66 percent of taxexpenditure benefits, the middle 60 percent of the population receives slightly more than 31 percent and the bottom fifth receives just 2.8 percent of taxexpenditure benefits. The top 1 percent of the population alone receives 23.9 percent of taxexpenditure benefits. According to a recent Pew Research Center poll, 60 percent of Americans believe the “economic system in this country unfairly favors the wealthy.” And even larger margin – 65 percent – believe the gap between the rich and everyone else has increased over the past 10 years. But instead of getting into what his Republican critics like to call a class war, the president framed the issue Tuesday night through the lens of a lack of progress for working-class Americans. “Let’s make this a year of action,” President Obama said. “That’s what most Americans want – for all of us in this chamber to focus on their lives, their hopes, their aspirations. And what I believe unites the people of this nation, regardless of race or region or party, young or old, rich or poor, is the simple, profound belief in opportunity for all – the notion that if you work hard and take responsibility, you can get ahead.” In an action on Tuesday, President Obama issued an executive order raising the minimum wage for federal contract workers from $7.25 an hour to $10.10. To raise the minimum wage beyond federal contractors, as Obama has been urging for more than a year, he will need the support of Congress. He will also need cooperation from the House and Senate to act on other issues such as immigration, extending unemployment benefits, tax re-
form and expanding pre-K education. Although White House officials are predicting some progress on farm legislation and immigration, they recognize that partisan politics traditionally grow even more partisan in a mid-term election, especially during a president’s second term. Consequently, the administration is advancing a series of modest initiatives, including: • Directing the Treasury Department to create a starter retirement savings account, called “myRA”; • Hosting a White House summit on working families; • Having Vice President Joe Biden lead a review of the federal job training system; • Streamlining federal regulations covering construction of manufacturing factories that rely on natural gas and • Convening a group of CEOs to solicit their ideas on
how best to get unemployed workers back into the job market. On CNN Tuesday night, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich criticized President Obama for taking so long to use the authority he has to issue executive orders, which are presidential directives that interpret the constitution and federal laws without needing the approval of Congress. According to the National Archives and The American Presidency Project, President Obama has issued 168 executive orders. His 147 during his first term was the fewest by a president in more than 100 years. By contrast, in their first terms, Ronald Reagan issued 213, Bill Clinton 200 and George W. Bush 173. Obama defenders say many of his executive orders have been far reaching, delaying enforcement of certain sections of the
Affordable Care Act, federal recognition of same-sex marriages and delaying deportation of some illegal immigrants. At a White House briefing with a small group of reporters Tuesday afternoon, a senior administration official responded to critics who contend that President Obama would be more effective if he socialized more with House Republicans. But that’s been impossible with the Tea Party wing of the GOP, the official said. “They said he should schmooze a little bit more, if he would just go play golf with them,” said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. “They don’t want to be seen playing golf with him. They don’t want to be seen having dinner with him. They don’t want to work with the president and they’ve told us that every way they know how.”
