First AME Church Holds Prayer Vigil for Families of 9 Victims a White Man Killed in Emmanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina By Gloria Zuurveen Editor-in-Chief LOS ANGELES—Hours after suspect 21-year-old Dylann Roof murdered nine worshippers who were attending a Wednesday night Bible study in one of America’s most historic churches in the nation, the Emmanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina, a City-Wide prayer vigil took place thousands a miles away at the First African American Episcopal Church in Los Angeles . The First AME church family and the Jewish Faith Family at Temple Isaiah in Los Angeles, joined with other peace-loving individuals across racial and religious lines in sharing words of comfort and solace to the families of Pastor Clementa Pinckney and the other eight women and men who were so senselessly gunned down while attending a Prayer Service at the historic church in South Carolina on Wednesday night. Mayor Eric Garcetti was on hand to speak to the crowd who had come from near and far to find the peace that passes all understanding of why someone would enter a house of worship and do such a diabolical act. He was introduced by the Right Reverend T. Larry Kirkland, the Bishop of the 5th Episcopal District of African Methodist Episcopal Church. Mayor Garcetti opened his remarks by giving thanks to the bishop and all those who had come out for the evening. He said what happened was not just an attack on the church but that it was an attack on the nation itself. He quoted scripture from First John 4:20, If anyone says, “I love God” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he sees cannot love God whom he has not seen. The audience gave him a round of applauds. He said, “Emmanuel AME is as American as the Liberty Bell.” He said it’s not just a church of the proud parishioners who decades and centuries long have gone there. It is a part of our history and it is an attack on our history of who we are and on what we believe in as people of faith and what we believe in as Americans. “In 1816 when Emmanuel AME was first built when few raised their hands up, Denmark Vesey stood up with White and Black brothers and sisters against the crime of slavery and as a result the church was burned to the ground but it couldn’t be stopped,” said Mayor Garcetti.

Hello Everyone, Words can’t express the pain I feel for those families who have lost loved ones at the hands of hateful murderer. It is hard to hold back the anger but is helpful to understand and know that God is the God of all comfort in times like these. While we seek through prayer and meditation the will and ways of God, it is still a disgrace when we as a people don’t learn simple lesson of unity when it seems that the whole world is against us. On last night, as I was moved to be present to do as the late Ida B. Wells would have done. Tell our story as it happens in our community when our so -called Black leaders call an alarm to pray and seek God’s face. While it was at First AME Church a City-Wide prayer vigil and call all denomination and religion to come together, I was appalled that when I arrive at the church as the Black Press, again, I was directed to the balcony while the white press has prominent position inside of the church. When we develop a spirit of Nehemiah and have concerns for our people? It is bad enough when White people are killing us in cold blood and we still allow for them to come in our house of worship without questions but to the Black we direct them to the backdoor. Carter G. Woodson said it best. “We sick Master.”

Good News and Bad News in Latest Job Numbers By Julianne Malveaux, NNPA Columnist The unemployment rate rose just a bit in May, an indicator that Wall Street and Main Street are celebrating because that means more people are looking for work and that more people are optimistic. Some polling data says something quite different – two major media polls show widespread dissatisfaction with the status quo, with majority support for an increased minimum wage, for paid parental leave and paid sick leave. Further, more than 60 percent said there was room for advancement in our economy An analysis of the New York Times/ CBS poll concludes, “inequality looms large” in the minds of most Democrats and independents, and nearly half of all Republicans. These are the folks who are reading the headlines that say things are getting better, and living a life that say things are too slow and too stagnant for them. The disconnect partly reflects the difference between productivity increases and GDP increases. In other words, people are working harder, and national productivity is growing faster, than wages are. Last month, the average hourly worker earned about 8 cents more than they did the month before. Those eight cents represent a 2.3 percent increase this year. This sounds like good news this year, but what about stuck wages for the past several years? Those who are reading about good news are asking, “What about me?” The latest unemployment report sends a similar mixed message. While the unemployment rate ticked up from 5.4 percent to 5.5 percent, the good news is that 280,000 new jobs were created in May 2015. That’s great news and on target for the number of jobs that need to be created to bring us back to the employment levels we enjoyed eight years ago. Not so good news: Many of these jobs aren’t “good jobs.” Nearly half of the jobs in “business services” are part-time or consulting jobs. These are jobs that offer no health insurance, no sick days, no paid vacation. These are folks who, even when highly compensated, are on their own. Perhaps the increase in leisure and hospitality employment reflects optimism about the economy,

because it suggests that employers think more people will be traveling and enjoying hospitality services this summer. Still, most of the jobs in this industry are part-time, with the average worker getting 22 hours a week— too few to qualify for benefits. In hospitality, including food and drinking places, young people are working for low wages, often depending on tips, always earning less than they might if the labor market would absorb them at their skill level. Meanwhile, many of us who enjoy the services of the coffee barista, the waitress, or the theme park guide don’t ever wonder how well they are paid. Still, it makes sense to revel in the good news – the unemployment rate is lower than it was a year ago. Always, though, there are the footnotes. The 5.5 percent unemployment rate is 10.8 percent when indices of labor utilization are considered. The African American unemployment rate, at 10.2 percent, is nearly 20 percent when underutilization measures are considered. The 20 percent rate lower than a year ago, but it is still too high. The percentage of the population that is employed also reflects significant racial gaps. While nearly 70 percent of White men are working, just 62 percent of Black men have jobs. And while the same percentage of White women and Black women hold jobs, given data on men, it is clear that African American women are responsible for much more of the family income than Caucasian women are. No wonder people who hear about ‘good news’ don’t feel it. No wonder they are responding to polls with a concern that does not reflect the so-called good news. No wonder too many are concerned about poor working conditions, about feeling that they have no opportunity to improve their situation, about being frightened by the income inequality that will determine the futures of their children. Are we excited about the news that the economy is recovering? Of course. Some of us would be much more excited if the recovery trickled down. - See more at: http:// www.blackpressusa.com/good-news-and-bad-news-in-latest-job -numbers/#sthash.gIFNNka7.dpuf Julianne Malveaux is a Washington, D.C.-based author and economist. By Bill Fletcher, Jr. NNPA Columnist If you want to see up-close what the political right wants to do to public education, take a look at Wisconsin. Recent legislation, aimed ostensibly at the city of Milwaukee, is attempting to remove local control of the schools and systematically expand the charter school system. And here is the punch line: they want to remove the requirement for teachers to be certified in order to teach. That’s right. You heard it first. These throwbacks suggest that teacher certification is both unnecessary and a hindrance to the hiring of teachers. Thus, there would be no requirements to teach. There are several things to understand about the political right’s approach to education. Many people thought that they were simply interested in charter schools. Nope. Many thought that they were simply interested in vouchers. Nope. They are interested in the end of public education and its replacement with a system of publicly subsidized private education. Now, let’s take a moment and look at this. One of the favorite arguments of the right is that everyone should have a voucher to go to a school of their choice. Well, if we were all born equal – and I don’t mean equal in front of the law but I mean equal in front of the dollar – that might be one thing. Yet, the reality is that if there is private education, it will always be to the advantage of those who have money. Vouchers simply mean that there is a pool of funds available allegedly for each student. But wait: will those vouchers guarantee that your child gets into the school of your choice? No. Why? Because, among other

things, the tuition in that school may be more – quite possibly substantially more – than the value of your voucher. Vouchers will not guarantee that a poor student will get into a good private school. There is no guarantee that they will even be considered. Privatization of education also raises some troubling issues about the content of education. This is a matter that has been arising a lot over the years. Will there be any standards? Obviously, if the right-wing in Wisconsin gets its way, there will be no standards for teaching. But what about the content of the curriculum? Every school teaching based on its own ideology? There is a name for this and it is “chaos.” Public education has been weakened in large part because the resources that are needed are not being made available. Beginning with the tax revolts of the 1970s, right-wing movements have sought to starve the public sector generally and public education in particular because they simply do not believe in the need for or the right to have a public sector and public education. To them, whatever is “private” is automatically superior to anything “public,” despite repeated evidence to the contrary. So, the next time you hear someone talking about more charter schools, more vouchers, etc., understand that this is a code for a dangerous agenda. They want your tax dollars and your family’s money in order to enrich the privateers. And none of this help’s your child’s education. - See more at: http:// www.blackpressusa.com/right-wing-out-to-destroy-publiceducation/#sthash.0cxNFtde.dpuf Bill Fletcher, Jr. is the host of The Global African on Telesur-English. EDUCATION & BUSINESS NEWS Texas School Draws Fire for Giving “Ghetto Awards’ to Students By Courtney Jacobs A Middle School in Texas has drawn criticism for awards two teachers handed out to students. Two teachers at Sulphur Springs Middle School in Sulphur Springs, Texas gave out “ghetto awards” to their eighth-grade special education class. In fact, the awards were something of a tradition; this latest round was the Eighth Annual Ghetto Awards. School administrators said one of the teachers appears to have carried them over from a previous place of employment. The awards came to light after several students’ parents posted them on social media. The exact criteria for which a student earned a “Ghetto Award” has not been made clear; according to Dallas-Fort Worth Fox affiliate KDFW, one of the teachers claimed they were not meant as a racial slur. One award posted on social media was labelled “The Huh? Award,” and was given to a student for saying “huh?” often during class, the television station reported. Debra Jose’s grandson was a recipient of one of the award. “Tears just started falling out of my eyes,” Jose told CBS Dallas affiliate KTVT. “I was like, what did they just do to him again? I just lay in bed and thought about it all night long. I couldn’t sleep very good. You want the best for children, not just my grandchild, but every child.” “It is not something [the Sulphur Springs school district] is proud of,” Sulphur Springs Superintendent Michael Lamb told the television station. “It is not acceptable. It is not anything we want to be a part of… and we are addressing it today.”

CHURCH & COMMUNITY NEWS Obama Mourns Loss of 9 Killed in Charleston; Says Shooting Massacre Is 'Heartbreaking,' Especially in 'Place of Worship' By Samuel Smith In his remarks regarding Wednesday night's massacre inside the historic Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina, President Barack Obama outlined how the congregation has a 200-year history of dealing with persecution brought on by racism and hatred. After a white gunmen, identified as 21-year-old Dylann Roof, shot and killed a pastor and eight other worshipers attending a Bible study at Emanuel AME Church, Obama issued a spoken statement on Thursday condemning the attack and added that he was personally angered by it. "Any death of this sort is a tragedy," Obama stated. "There is something particularly heartbreaking about the death happening in a place in which we seek solace and we seek peace, in a place of worship." Reports of survivor testimonies indicate that the gunman's motives were largely inspired by a racist attitude, in which Roof allegedly felt that black people are "taking over the country" and "have to go." "Michelle and I know several members of Emanuel AME Church. We knew their pastor, Reverend Clementa Pinckney, who, along with eight others, gathered in prayer and fellowship and was murdered last night," Obama said. "And to say our thoughts and prayers are with them and their families, and their community, doesn't say enough to convey the heartache and the sadness and the anger that we feel." Although the death of pastor Pinckney and the eight others is tragic, this is not the first time this Emanuel AME Church, which dates back to 1816 as the first independent black congregation in the U.S., has been caught in the crosshairs of racially inspired attacks. Obama explained the central role that the church had in the liberation of African-American slaves led to a large white supremacist pushback against the congregation in the mid-1800s. One of the church's founding mem-

Vesey was accused of organizing a slave revolt plot that would have involved thousands of slaves from around the city and surrounding areas. After white supremacists found out about the plot, they torched the original Emanuel AME church building. "Mother Emanuel is, in fact, more than a church. This is a place of worship that was founded by African-Americans seeking liberty," Obama said. "This is a church that was burned to the ground because its worshipers worked to end slavery." The church was rebuilt in 1834, but that was during a time when black churches were prohibited from gathering. Obama explained that the church was forced to secretly congregate. "When there were laws banning all-black church gatherings,

they conducted services in secret," Obama explained. Emanuel AME's importance also extends into the civil rights era, when leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King spoke at the congregation. "When there was a nonviolent movement to bring our country closer in line with our highest ideals,

some of our brightest leaders spoke and led marches from this church's steps," Obama said. "This is a sacred place in the history of Charleston and in the history of America." "Reverend Pinckney and his congregation understood that spirit. Their Christian faith compelled them to reach out not just to members of their

congregation, or to members of their own communities, but to all in need," Obama continued. "They opened their doors to strangers who might enter a church in search of healing or redemption. Mother Emanuel church and its congregation have risen before –- from flames, from an earthquake, from other dark times -– to give hope to generations of Charlestonians." Also in his statement, Obama argued for more gun control and made the bold claim that malicious attacks, like the one carried out by Roof on Emanuel AME, only seem to happen in America. "At some point, we as a country will have to reckon with the fact that this type of mass violence does not happen in other advanced countries," Obama contended. "It doesn't happen in other places with this kind of frequency. And it is in our power to do something about it." Americans should change how they think about gun violence, he added. "We don't have all the facts, but we do know that, once again, innocent people were killed in part because someone who wanted to inflict harm had no trouble getting their hands on a gun," Obama argued. "And at some point it's going to be important for the American people to come to grips with it, and for us to be able to shift how we think about the issue of gun violence collectively."

HEALTH & COMMUNITY NEWS China Rejects Patent Linked to Gilead Hepatitis C Drug By Brendan Pierson and Adam Jourdan (Reuters) China has rejected a Gilead Sciences Inc patent application related to its costly hepatitis C drug, a U.S. advocacy group said, adding the move may lead to other countries to consider rejecting patents for the controversial treatment. Gilead has drawn fire for the cost of its top-selling drug Sovaldi, priced at $1,000 per pill in the United States or $84,000 for a typical 12-week course and its patents have been challenged in the U.S., India and Europe. The application China has rejected was for a so-called prodrug, the inactive form of the drug which then converts into the chemically active compound once in the body, the New York-based Initiative

for Medicines, Access & Knowledge (I-MAK) said. Gilead, however, holds the China patent to the base compound in the drug, also known by its generic name sofosbuvir and China's rejection of the prodrug patent does not open the way for copycat drugs to be made in the world's No. 2 drug market. China-based officials for Gilead were not immediately available for comment. Emails and calls to Gilead's U.S. offices outside office hours went unanswered. Officials at China's State Intellectual Property Office did not confirm the decision when contacted by Reuters, but a notice posted on the body's website said Gilead's application for "nucleoside phosphramidates", a kind of prodrug, had recently been

Swallowing Hype By Dean L. Jones, CPM The Cleveland Cavaliers lost to the Golden State Warriors for the 2015 NBA championship, and LeBron James looked broken hearted to his team's defeat. Ironically, his expression reminded me of how you sometimes look when your blood sugar crashes from consuming too much of a sugary-filled soda. Quite coincidental since Mr. James and other prominent celebrities apply their respective name and face to endorse a variety of junk food and drink products. One example is found in the latest ads developed for CocaCola's Sprite soda and its 'Obey Your Verse' campaign that attempts to entice rap music fans by placing song lyrics on specialty cans. This summer's soda sales season offer consumers of the drink to read the lyrics to their favorite songs while swallowing Sprite's product hype. The celebrities include present and past famous rap artists Drake, Nas, Rakim and Notorious BIG. Mockingly, the term soft drink is anything but soft, as sugary sodas increase the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and other chronic conditions. For those who consume 1 to 2 sugary drinks a day or more run a 26% greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes than people who rarely have such drinks. Even swallowing one can of a sugary beverage per day raises a 20% higher risk of having a heart attack or dying from a heart attack than not or rarely consuming sugary drinks. Women who consume a can a day of sugary drink stand a 75% higher risk of gout than women who rarely swallow such drinks. Food and beverage brand endorsements are obviously beneficial to personal cash flow, where LeBron James is not alone in the big star names being joined by Peyton Manning and Serena Williams who help sell the hype for Papa John's and McDonald’s, respectively. Dean L. Jones products from Gatorade, Wheaties, Nabisco and Pepsi. Likewise, the great Serena Williams lends her face and name to Oreo, Gatorade, and Nabisco 100Calorie Snack Pack campaigns. One bit of information you will undoubtedly never get from these campaigns are how as soon as soda is swallowed, the pancreas is notified and rapidly begins to create insulin in response to the excessive processed sugar. Insulin is a hormone the body uses to move sugar from food or drink into the bloodstream, where cells are then able to use sugar for energy. Within 20-minutes of swallowing a single 20-ounce glass of soda, blood sugar levels spike and the liver responds to the insulin by turning sugar into fat for storage, and in 45-minutes caffeine from the drink is fully absorbed, causing eye pupils to dilate and the blood pressure to rise. Over the next 15-minutes the body begins to experience a blood sugar crash. Accordingly, do not fall victim to swallowing the celebrity endorsed sugary hype. rejected. China's move follows a decision by India's patent office in January to reject Gilead's patent application for Sovaldi, finding it was not inventive enough. Gilead is appealing the ruling. Under pressure to cut prices, the California-based firm agreed last year to make the drug available for lower prices in 91 developing countries. I-MAK has brought legal challenges against Gilead's patents or patent applications in five countries not covered by the agreement: China, Argentina, Brazil, Russia and Ukraine. Charities in Europe have also challenged Gilead's patent over its prices. The World Health Organization says as many as 150 million people worldwide live with chronic hepatitis C infection, most of them in low and middle-income countries. It recently added Sovaldi to its essential medicines list and urged lower prices, especially in middle income countries. (Editing by David Gregorio and Edwina Gibbs)

BUSINESS & COMMUNITY NEWS Mayor Garcetti Signs Historic Minimum Wage Increase into Law LOS ANGELES-- Mayor Garcetti today signed the City of Los Angeles's largest anti-poverty measure into law, increasing the City's minimum wage to $15.00 per hour by 2020. The law will give a raise to more than 600,000 Angelenos currently earning minimum wage, helping lift them and their families out of poverty. The Mayor was joined by business, labor, and religious leaders as well as seven members of the Los Angeles City Council to sign the ordinance at Martin Luther King Jr. Park, in South LA, where he first launched the campaign to raise the minimum wage in LA on Labor Day 2014. "Today is a major victory for our city, our communities, and working Angelenos across Los Angeles," said Mayor Eric Garcetti. "While our city's economic health continues to roar back— we have the highest employment levels on record -- too many Angelenos are still being left behind. Today's minimum wage increase addresses that gap, enabling working families in LA to lift themselves out of poverty and tying our minimum wage to the cost of living to make this justice last. LA as whole will benefit from this boost: we have always prospered the most when everyone is able to spend money into our economy." The law raises the minimum wage to $15.00 by 2020 for businesses with 25 employees or more and to $15.00 by 2021 for businesses with 25 or fewer employees. By 2022, and annually thereafter, the minimum wage will increase based

on the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) for the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The minimum wage in the City of LA will be increased on the following schedule: 7/1/16: $10.50 7/1/17: $12.00 7/1/18: $13.25 7/1/19: $14.25 7/1/20: $15.00 For businesses and nonprofits with 25 or fewer employees, the increase will happen on the below schedule: 7/1/17: $10.50 7/1/18: $12.00 7/1/19: $13.25 7/1/20: $14.25 7/1/21: $15.00 Youth wages will be 85% of the minimum wage for workers 14-17 years old. Of the more than 600,000 current minimum wage earners who will receive a raise, 97% of those workers are aged 20 and older; 60% are over 30 years old. Over 80% of the workers receiving this raise will be people of color and 50% are women. Nearly half of minimum wage earners earning this wage have some college education and 14% have a bachelor's degree or higher. In addition to the minimum wage, Mayor Garcetti will sign into law an ordinance passed by the City Council that will establish an Office of Labor Standards (OLS), with $500,000 budgeted in fiscal year 2015-2016 to fund investigators and outreach efforts to ensure businesses are paying workers their fair share.

The OLS will work to curtail wage theft and ensure a level playing field for businesses in Los Angeles, working in conjunction with current State efforts to enforce the minimum wage. Mayor Garcetti was also joined today by minimum wage earners Chaz Grayson, a member of the Los Angeles Black Workers Center, and Lucio Fernandez, a janitor, who will both benefit from this increase.

In raising the wage in LA, Mayor Garcetti joins President Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, and leaders across the country pushing to raise the wage across the United States to lift Americans out of poverty. Since launching this campaign, Mayor Garcetti and his staff met with business coalitions, community members, non-profits, small business groups, labor organizations, Neighborhood Councils, and religious

leaders to gather input and garner support for his effort to #RaiseTheWageLA. This is the latest step in Mayor Garcetti's effort to put the recession in the rearview mirror and get Angelenos back to work and back on track. Since Mayor Garcetti took office in 2013, Los Angeles has added more than 85,000 new jobs and unemployment is down 2% (seasonally adjusted).

NEWS Mayor Garcetti Announces Public Online Access to Building Records LOS ANGELES — As a part of his back to basics agenda, Mayor Eric Garcetti today announced a new customer service tool from the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety (LADBS), the LADBS Online Building Records system, which will offer users a quick and easy way to research building records and obtain digital images of original documents online. The Online Building Records system allows 24-hour access to key records such as building permits and Certificates of Occupancy without requiring customers to make a trip downtown and wait in line at the records counter, saving Angelenos and businesses time and money. "Putting our building records online is good business practice and just plain common sense," said Mayor Garcetti.

"This system cuts red tape and improves customer service for builders, developers, and everyday Angelenos, making L.A. more attractive to key investments that create jobs. City Hall is working to help those investing in LA." The system contains more than 13 million records dating from 1905 to the present, including building permits, Certificates of Occupancy, building modifications, grading information, Commission files, and more. Since the system's soft launch in May, it has been accessed more than 27,600 times by nearly 3,700 unique users. Access to Online Building Records is from LADBS.org under the “Online Services” tab, or directly at http:// ladbsdoc.lacity.org/idispublic. Records can be retrieved by address, legal description,

Izzy’s Column

County Assessor Parcel Number, or document number. Permits and Certificates of Occupancy, the most requested and used documents, were converted to digital image first, and more than 4.7 million of them are now available. Conversion of historic microfilm and paper documents is in progress, and those images will be placed online as they are converted. LADBS serves approxi-

mately 65,000 records customers annually. Primary users include homeowners, contractors, architects, engineers, escrow agencies, banks, and permit expediters. Real estate industry users may use records to validate use and occupancy for a building being sold or purchased. Development industry users might use records to review permits and Certificates of Occupancy, address code enforcement issues, or bid on

jobs. Homeowners preparing to obtain new permits, sell their homes, or wanting to satisfy curiosity and concerns may also seek records. The Online Building Records service is part of a suite of development services enhancements and customer service improvements being rolled out by LADBS, including Inspection Case Management and Saturday inspections.

NATIONAL/STATE & REGIONAL NEWS South Carolina Shooting Victims United by Their Devotion to Church By Laila Kearney and Katie Reilly

The victims of Wednesday's mass shooting in Charleston, South Carolina, were bonded in life by their faith and their close links to the historic African-American church where they worshipped, studied the Bible, and were killed. The six women and three men fatally shot at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church included a high school track and field coach, a studious Dallas Cowboys fan, a dedicated librarian and a state senator and preacher whose voice commanded respect. They opened up their Bible study class to a young white man who police later named as the suspect in their murders. Dylann Roof, 21, was arrested in Shelby, North Carolina, about 220 miles (350 km) away, on Thursday. Clementa Pinckney, 41, senior pastor at Emanuel and a Democratic member of the state senate, was the most prominent victim. Pinckney grew up in Jasper County, South Carolina, began preaching at age 13 and became a pastor five years later. With his tall stature and booming voice, he motivated and educated his congregation, colleagues said. "He had a very, very strong impact on this congregation and in this community," said James Gilliard, acting steward at Campbell Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church, where Pinckney served as pastor from 2009 to 2010. Pinckney had two daughters with his wife, Jennifer. He graduated magna cum laude with a degree in business administration from Allen University in Columbia, South Carolina, where he served as class president. Reverend Sharonda Coleman Singleton, 45, was also killed, said officials with Charleston Southern University, where Singleton's son, Chris Singleton, is a student. She was also a member of Emanuel's ministerial staff. Singleton, who lived in Summerville, South Carolina, was a speech language pathologist at Goose Creek High School, where she coached the girls' track and field team. and sister, posted a photo of his mother and Pinckney to Instagram on Thursday morning. "It’s funny how I always told you that you went to church too much," he wrote in the post. "You would laugh it off and say, 'Boy you can never have too much of the Lord.'" Reverend Daniel Simmons, 74, who also worked at Emanuel, was the only victim who died at a local hospital rather than in the church. Simmons' father was a pastor for 50 years and his mother was a member of the women's Sunday school, according to an online obituary. He had three brothers. 'WARM AND HELPFUL SPIRIT' A second Allen University alumnus was killed in Wednesday's shooting. Tywanza Sanders, 26, a 2014 graduate who like Pinckney had a business degree, was a quiet but popular student who was dedicated to his education. "He presented a warm and helpful spirit," the university said in a statement. On his Facebook page, Sanders said he was a fan of the Dallas Cowboys and the Charleston RiverDogs minor league baseball team. He is shown in his profile photograph smiling and looking relaxed against the backdrop of a message that read, "Your dreams are calling you."

ART/ENTERTAINMENT & SPORTS NEWS Father Makes a Daughter Proud with TV Award Nomination By Taylor Bell PACE NEWS Contributing Writer In 2009 television news producer and California native Raymond Bell won his first Emmy for Best Sports Story. In 2014 Bell took home his second Emmy for Best Feature Story. This year, Bell is nominated for yet another Emmy for his story on David Kopay,

the first openly gay football player. Although his success has made him a respected and wellknown presence in the community of broadcast television in Los Angeles, to me, Bell will always just be my father. “I’m honored and humbled by receiving this honor and recognition from my peers for a third time.” Bell said. My father has worked in the field of television for over 35 years. First, as a production assistant at KTLA Channel 5 news, then as a sports producer at FOX, and currently, as a freelance producer for CBS. His knack for finding and telling compelling stories is what continues to garner the attention of the Television Academy of Arts and Sciences and, more recently, the Los Angeles Press Club. Along with scoring an Emmy nomination this year, Bell received a nomination for “Best Sports Story” by the Los Angeles Press Club. “I’m excited to receive this nomination because the Los Angeles Press Club is a prestigious organization with a long history of honoring journalism,” Bell said. “David Kopay’s story about keeping his sexuality a secret is moving and compelling.” These accolades are just a small reflection of Bell’s hard work. In 2002 Bell brokered a deal with FOX Sports International for a ten-episode sports and entertainment talk show called, “Inside Pitch.” Over ten episodes guests such as actors Will Smith and Sylvester Stallone and former NBA basketball star Shaquille O’Neal made appearances on the show. Bell’s innovative and creative mind continues to push him into new projects outside of news. Currently, Bell is coproducing a documentary with filmmaker Doug Harris about Major League Baseball’s first African-American umpire. In addition, Bell is in the process of co-producing a play called “The

Ghost in the House,” about Jack Jackson the first African American heavyweight-boxing champion. The play is co-written by Ernie Hudson of the movie “Ghostbusters” fame and Frank Megna. The play will be presented by UCLA’s Black Alumni Association and performed at UCLA Schoenberg Theater October 9, 10 and 11 of this year. As his daughter I am very proud. His hard work and passion for news has rubbed off on me. I never imagined that someday I would follow in his footsteps and desire to enter the world of broadcast television and media as well. But because of his guidance and encouragement I find myself pursuing the same dream today. When I was in college I decided to become a journalist. I joined my university newspaper and there, began to write news stories. The very first story I ever wrote and published received so much black lash on my campus that I was bombarded by hateful comments and phone

calls from students. Students even removed the newspapers that contained my article, which was about the pressure of sorority and fraternity Greek life, from the newsstands. It was a difficult moment to say the least. But my father, being so experienced in the field of media, encouraged me to take the difficult and traumatic experience as an invaluable one. He simply said, “You do not realize it now, but this will be good for you.” Indeed, it was. Because of his words I grew thick skin, something I needed in order to be successful in the dog-eat-dog world of media. It was at that moment that I came to truly appreciate my father’s presence and work in television news. For me, it is no surprise that he has received these precious awards and nominations. They are the fruit of his hard work and dedication to his craft. I am thankful to have a father that understands the journey I am taking since he already paved the road for me to take it.
