By Lawrence Hurley WASHINGTON—The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday rejected a conservative legal challenge that could have doomed President Barack Obama's healthcare law, upholding nationwide tax subsidies crucial to his signature domestic policy achievement. Obama strode into the White House Rose Garden after the ruling to declare that the law known as Obamacare is working, helping millions of Americans afford health insurance who otherwise would have none, and that it is "here to stay." Chief Justice John Roberts, a conservative appointed by Republican President George W. Bush, wrote in the 6-3 ruling that Congress clearly intended for the tax subsidies that help millions of low- and moderate-income people afford private health insurance to be available in all 50 states. The court decided that the law did not restrict the subsidies to states that establish their own online health insurance exchanges, as the challengers in the case contended. "Congress passed the Affordable Care Act to improve health insurance markets, not to destroy them," Roberts wrote, adding nationwide availability of the credits is required to "avoid the type of calamitous result that Congress plainly meant to

Roberts was joined by fellow conservative Justice Anthony Kennedy and the court's four liberal members in a ruling that may ensure Obamacare becomes a lasting element of the nation's social programs. The ruling means the current system will remain in place, with subsidies available nationwide. If the challengers had won, at least 6.4 million people in at least 34 states would have lost subsidies worth an average of $272 per month. It marked the second time in three years the high court ruled against a major challenge to the law brought by conservatives. Both rulings were written
by Roberts. Unlike the 2012 case, in which the court was split 5-4, Kennedy joined Roberts in the majority this time. The law was passed by Obama's fellow Democrats in Congress in 2010 over the unified opposition of Republicans, who have fought it since its inception. Republicans will keep attacking Obamacare in Congress and on the 2016 presidential election campaign trail to energize right-wing voters and raise money, but little chance exists of the law being rolled back before the end of Obama's presidency in January 2017, political analysts said. EDITORIAL/OPINION Publisher’s Column

Hello Everyone, Glory be to God for all of His goodness and mercy. Let us keep the family of the nine victims who were murdered in our prayers. Let is keep America in prayer because there is a lot of trouble brewing in our society today. With all the disunity and uncertainty, now like never before we need to trust in a living God who is able to keep us through the storms of life. Let us not forget to do what God would have us to do which is to love because love covers a multitude of sins. And we saw this week a clear demonstration of God’s love in action coming from the family members of the victims. They express their forgiveness and how they are trusting in God to carry them through. This is a blessing and we can learn valuable lessons from what we have witnessed. It is the love of God that constrains us and keeps us when everything else tells us to react and carry out vengeance on the those who express so much hate toward us. We must pray for the hearts to change not the flags. People love not flags.

CDC’s Latest Tuskegee Experiment By Robert R. Kennedy, Jr. Last August, CDC senior scientist, Dr. William Thompson, invoked federal whistleblower status and confessed that the CDC has known since 2001 that black boys exposed to the MMR vaccine have a disproportionate risk of autism. Thompson, a 17 year CDC veteran is the author of some of the leading studies cited by CDC to exculpate vaccines from the autism epidemic. Thompson, who still works at CDC, released the raw data sets that he says his bosses at CDC ordered him to conceal. Those data show that black boys who received the MMR vaccine prior to three years old, as the CDC recommends – were 3.36 times more likely to receive an autism diagnosis than those who received the vaccine after 3 years of age. This effect was not observed in other race categories. Nevertheless, when the CDC scientists published their results in Pediatrics in 2004, they omitted the damaging data, fraudulently declaring there was no risk of autism from the MMR vaccination. In August 2014, Dr. Thompson issued a press release through his attorney stating, “I regret that my coauthors and I omitted statistically significant information in our 2004 article published in the journal Pediatrics. The omitted data suggested that African American males who received the MMR vaccine before age 36 months were at increased risk for autism.” The buried data were disturbing, but hardly surprising. The most reliable studies in the scientific literature indicate that African Americans are more susceptible to vaccine injury and may also have increased susceptibility to neurological disorders such as autism. A 2010 nationwide study of CDC’s Autism and Developmental Disability Monitoring Network, found autism incidence about 25% higher in African Americans than Caucasians. A 2014 study published in Pediatrics, showed higher rates of all categories of autism among African Americans in Los Angeles County compared to Caucasians, with the incidence of severe autism elevated by 263% among foreign-born blacks and 152% for U.S. born blacks as compared to U.S. born whites. A 2010 study in the Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health showed that blacks were at significantly greater risk of regressing into autism after receiving the thimerosal-containing Hepatitis B vaccination series as infants. When analyzed further, the data showed that black boys receiving the HepB series were 53% more likely to have autism than those black boys not receiving any HepB shot. Based upon all the population data and CDC’s most recent autism incidence estimates, at least 100,000 African-American male children could have been spared debilitating neurological injury if the CDC scientists had told the truth when the increased risk was first known to them in 2001. Dr. Thompson has requested to testify before Congress about corruption at CDC and has handed Congress over thousands of pages of documents showing widespread fraud in CDC’s vaccine division. It’s not the first time the CDC has concealed vaccine risks from African Americans. Less than ten years ago, in June 1996, African Americans in Los Angeles learned that CDC has been conducting vaccine experiments in their communities. Beginning in 1989, CDC conducted an experiment on nearly 1500 black and hispanic infants using an unlicensed measles vaccine without disclosing to parents that the drug was a high potency experimental vaccine
designed to overwhelm the baby’s maternal immune system. CDC only halted its secret experiment in 1991 when companion clinical trials conducted in Africa and Haiti showed increased death rate and severe immune system disorder among female infants who received the vaccine. Those children died within two years after the vaccination. “A mistake was made. It shocked me”, then CDC Director Dr. David Satcher, told the LA Times. “We need to move to a new level of assurance so people can trust what we’re doing.” CDC denies that any Los Angeles black children were injured by the unlicensed vaccine, but has not produced any studies to confirm that claim. In 1972, a government whistleblower, Peter Buxton, revealed that for the previous forty years, beginning in 1932, both CDC and the U.S. Public Health Service (PHS) conducted the so called “Tuskegee Experiment” to study the progression of untreated syphilis in impoverished African-American men in rural Alabama. Public health regulators lured iliterate sharecroppers with the promise of hot meals, funeral costs and free health care from the U.S. government. According to the Centers for Disease Control, which took over the study in the early 1960’s, none of 299 syphilitic sharecroppers were ever told they had the disease. CDC purposefully withheld penicillin after the antibiotic became a proven treatment in 1947. CDC actively prevented participants from accessing syphilis treatment programs elsewhere. CDC’s victims in that study included numerous men who died of syphilis, 40 wives who contracted the disease, and 19 children born with congenital syphilis. When, in 1966, Buxton, an African-American, sent a letter to government regulators complaining about the ethics and morality of the study , CDC reaffirmed the need to continue the research until all subjects had died and been autopsied. To bolster its position, the CDC sought, and gained support for the study’s extension, from the American Medical Association (AMA). Buxton finally told his story to my uncle, Senator Edward Kennedy in July of 1972. Senator Kennedy convened Senate hearings, at which Buxton and HEW officials testified and CDC finally terminated the study. On May 16, 1997, President Bill Clinton formally apologized at a White house ceremony attended by five of the eight study survivors promising “our African-American citizens” that “clearly racist” public health policies would never happen again. By concealing the link between vaccines and autism in African American boys, CDC had once again violated that public trust. But this is not just about African-Americans. The fraudulent 2004 study, has been cited in 91 subsequent studies as one of the principle proofs of CDC’s claim that vaccines are not linked to the autism epidemic. CDC’s fraud in this study calls into question the validity of the entire body of research that families, medical professionals and policy-makers rely on when making decisions for the health of children. “I have a boss who is asking me to lie”, Thompson said in a taped conversation with Simpson University Professor, Dr. Brian Hooker. “I have great shame now when I meet a family with kids with autism, because I have been a part of the problem….because the CDC has not been transparent, we’ve missed ten years of research, because the CDC is so paralyzed right now by anything related to autism. They’re not doing what they should be doing. They are afraid to look for things that might be associated. I’m completely ashamed of what I did. The higher ups wanted to do certain things and I went along with it.” The time has come in this country for everyone – press, regulators and politicians – to stop “going along with it.”
The Malignant Hate Cancer Took Nine Lives By Dr. Rosie Milligan Deep-rooted hatred is a deadly poison. It’s hard for me to conceive how such deep hatred could fill the heart of a person who has only experienced twenty-one years of living. After the September 11 (9/11) tragedy, a little child asked the question, “Why do they hate us so much?” I asked myself the question, “Why do some white people hate black folks so much?” Black people are America’s best friend. We are more loyal than any race. With our sweat, tears and blood, we built this country, and—even though we never got the forty acres and a mule as promised—we continued to love white folks. We nursed their babies from our breast milk. We took care of their children while leaving our little children at home to fend for themselves. We birthed babies from seeds their men implanted in our wombs, with no consideration given to that offspring. Black men accepted the white man’s seed and provided for the child, without complaint; he went along to get along. Blacks were beaten and killed for attempting to learn how to read. The welfare system refused to assist a needy black family when the father was in the house, therefore forcing the black man to leave home in order for his wife and children to get a little help to survive. (Revisit the movie Claudine). Black men had to leave town, leaving their wives and children behind for merely talking back to a white man or for an accusation of looking at a white woman. Remember Emmitt Till, the young teen murdered in Mississippi in 1955. Many black men escaped the South because they feared for their lives. Some of them never got enough money to return for their families and they started new families, therefore causing fatherless children. Maybe Tulsa, Oklahoma needs to be revisited when black folks had an enclaved community with thriving businesses that was destroyed by a white mob. Maybe America needs a review of black history, where black families, children, mothers and fathers, wives and husbands were separated
and sold as slaves to new masters. Let’s teach on how white men have continued to perpetuate wealth from inventions they stole from blacks— inventions that changed lives for all Americans for the betterment. The list is too long to include in this article—Google “black inventions.” Let’s fast forward to the "NEW SLAVE SHIP” that does not sail—the prison industrial complex that separates black men and women from their children and families. My point is simple. It is time that all races learn the history and conditions forced upon blacks in America. If the shooter had known the history of how America has treated the black race as a whole, I believe his hatred for the black race would not have been as such. Black folks’ condition is a by-product of the inhumane treatment and injustice served him by the establishment. We cannot undo what has happened, however, we can all work hard on doing our part to ensure that this type of tragedy will never happen again based on race. As adults and parents, we must teach love in our homes and not leave that responsibility to our children to learn on their own. The love blacks have for white folks were demonstrated via the response that the victims’ families shared nationally toward the shooter when they expressed forgiveness. I pray we all learn a great lesson concerning sharing our views with our children. They know how their friends feel about other races, they hear their thoughts, they see and hear the media’s perspective, but they also, more than anything, need to hear from us—their parents and elders. We must do a better job in communicating about social issues and we cannot omit discussing race in our homes, our churches and schools. I want to share much more, but I realize this is an article and not a book. I know what has happened is real; I still want to see it as just a dream/ nightmare or something like that. This should not happen in America in 2015. EDUCATION & BUSINESS NEWS NFL Eric Dickerson “Giving Hope To The Fatherless on Father’s Day” By Tamara G. Lewis LOS ANGELES—On Sunday June 21, 2015, Father’s Day at the Eric Dickerson’s HALL OF FAME Youth Football camp, I had the greatest pleasure of supporting an event my GREAT nephews from the Antelope Valley were engaged. It was a beautiful sunny day, sky bluest and brotherly love circled the atmosphere. I arrived at Crenshaw High School (The Cougars) from the beckoning call of my great nephews; Andrew Garner and Elijah Hood (EJ age 7), along with a family friend Samuel Turner (Rell -age 8). The boys insisted I attend this function since it was in the “city.” I felt slightly unnerved as I was entering unfamiliar grounds at Crenshaw High, considering for decades the high school I attended was a cross town rivalry and undoubtedly I will forever represent the “Mighty Manual Arts-Toilers!” However, for the love of children and the Eric Dickerson’s Hall of Fame football camp, I humbly embraced the opportunity to support a great cause and for the first time ever I entered the Crenshaw Cougars gymnasium. I learned upon my arrival the event was a football camp and young people of the community were encouraged and welcomed to attend the camp. The young boys were given an opportunity to hear inspiring presentations of former professional athletes, who showed an interest in their lives and future. Elijah Hood (EJ Age 7) of Lancaster , Ca. stated, “I like football cause I get to tackle. I play quarterback because my dad thinks I am better at QB, but I like being a running back.” EJ’s cousin, Andrew Garner (Noodles Age 8) of Ocotillo School in Palmdale said, “I’m a Wide Receiver and Eric Dickerson played for my favorite team-the Rams. That’s all!” One other kid Marcus Serrato (age 10) attends Lovista School in Lancaster told me, ” Football brought him to Crenshaw High school and I really like Eric Dickerson’s camp. My favorite player is Desean Jackson.” And Johnny Williams, Jr. ( age 7) of Los Angeles said, “ I’m changing schools. I am going to break a lot of records. I

DickCoach Jason Hood "Lancaster Dolphins," Former NFL Eric Dickerson, Rell Turner, Marcus Serrato, Andrew Garner, Elijah Hood, a teammate and Baby Mason $ Garner. Photo by Tamara G. Lewis already know it because I’m real good.” Two former NFL players Eric Dickerson ( Rams) and Leonard Russell (New England Patriots) spoke to the kids and foremost represented an uncompromised desire to develop the character in young boys, so they too will serve as great father’s someday. There were many mother’s and surprisingly grandmother’s attending in support of their young sons as well as
some father’s. The “Lancaster Dolphins” were participating in the event and their coach Mr. Jason Hood commented, “ It is his hope to inspire the youth to leading very healthy lives.” Some of the parents attending were John & Rae’Shelle Garner (Palmdale, Ca.), Jason & Rae’Shawn Hood( Lancaster,Ca.), Candyce Jackson ( grandmother to Andrew Ray Garner & Elijah Hood ), Danielle Turner, Kenneth Garner and daughter Makaila Garner(Los Angeles) , Rainey Collins(Los Angeles). The staff representing the Eric Dickerson football camp gave brief presentations, yet the messages delivered were all too profound. The kids were very attentive, many could truly relate to the discussions. Jason Hill of Akron, Ohio was very active at the camp and represented the “Young Warriors.” He shared with boy’s how difficult his life was as a “white boy growing up in a black community with a drug addicted mother.” Jason emphasized the importance of extending love and being generous, no matter the circumstance. He said, “ the hick-ups made him to whom he is today.” Jason Hill was very instrumental with inspiring Eric Dickerson to establishing the HALL OF FAME Youth Football camp. Jason explained after conducting research, it was determined that an astounding 71% of the households in the local area nearest Crenshaw High school were single parent homes. The camps site was strategically selected due to the struggles of the community. All in attendance could greatly benefit from the rewards of the camp. The wonderful men came out intentionally as “Father Figures” on Father’s Day and shared with the young people their personal histories; victories and failures. Love simply permeated throughout the day. I briefly spoke with both former NFL players, Eric Dickerson and Leonard Russell. Leonard sent a message to the children “Be a leader, keep your pants up, and get an educa-
erson succeeded! In fact, Dickerson referenced once having an opportunity to meet O.J. on USC’s campus (Go Bruins!), while attending Sealy High School in Texas. He said, “I told O.J. that I hope to some day break his record.” O.J. laughed and said, “Good luck.” One of Dickerson’s greatest victories he exclaimed was winning the state championship with the Sealy High Tigers vs. the Wiley High Wildcats. He could still remember the score in that game, 42 to 20 and stated “That’s Texas -Real Football!” Dickerson prides his legacy in being a “giver.” Just as soon as the opportunity presented, he gave to his mom (Great, Great Aunt Viola, who adopted him after his mother’s passing) a beautiful home. He gives willingly and not begrudgingly, which he admitted is great advice taken from his dad. His father also reminded Dickerson to do “everything right the first time, half is never right.” The kids were delighted to receive “FREE” haircuts at the camp from barber T. K., sponsored by “A Cut Above” barbershop located in San Fernando Valley and owned by Trae Allen Mc Murray, III. The kids were proud to display their new cuts. The barbers did a fantastic job! The Eric Dickerson’s HALL OF FAME Youth Football camp is to be commended for their dedication to the uplifting and betterment of the young boy’s and girl’s, who may appear to be targeted for a wrong turn in life; yet saved by the olive branch extended from the hearts of great people.

CHURCH & COMMUNITY NEWS Americans Uneasy About Islamic Threat To Religious Freedom By Lisa Cannon Green NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Americans view Islam as a threat to their own nation’s religious liberty almost as strongly as they consider it a danger to religious freedom internationally, new research shows. Although most persecution occurs overseas, 39 percent of American adults say Islam threatens religious freedom in the United States— almost as many as the 40 percent who see Islam as a global threat, a survey by Nashville-based LifeWay Research finds. “Most recent headlines regarding Islam don’t paint a picture of religious freedom—so we should not be surprised by the strong minority that consider Islam a threat to religious freedom,” said Ed Stetzer, executive director of LifeWay Research. “However, it is worth noting less Americans see Islam as a threat to religious freedom than do not. What's of particular interest to me is not people’s concern about international religious liberty— which I would expect—but that 40 percent of Americans see Islam as a threat to religious liberty in the United States.” A slim majority, 52 percent, believes U.S. religious liberties are not at risk because of Islam. Religious liberty has been widely discussed recently, but social policy, not Islam, has been the focus of recent religious freedom disputes in the United States. Courts have weighed religious freedom arguments in deciding whether to permit same-sex marriage, allow businesses to turn away gay customers, and require employers to pay for birth control. On a global scale, Americans are unsettled about the influence of Islam. While 47 percent think it doesn’t endanger religious freedom internationally, almost as many (40 percent) believe it does, and 13 percent are unsure. Researchers asked
1,000 Americans about their views in a phone survey Sept. 19-28, 2014. Earlier that same month, the Islamic militant group ISIS released videos of beheadings of two Americans, prompting President Obama to tell an alarmed public the extremist group also known as ISIL is not Islamic. But LifeWay Research found at the time 48 percent disagreed with the president’s statement, while 3 in 10 were unsure. More than 1 in 4 believed ISIS is a true indication of an Islam-controlled society. Religious restrictions on the rise Global concern about religious freedom is widespread and data shows such concern to be warranted. For example, Pew Research shows more than threequarters of the world’s people live in countries with high religious restrictions, up from about two-thirds in 2007.
In the United States, restrictions are moderate but increasing, according to Pew. Pew’s measurement of hostile acts involving religion in America climbed 63 percent from 2007 to 2013, and its accounting of government restrictions on religion nearly doubled. Americans perceive the effects, according to previous LifeWay research. More than half of Americans and 70 percent of Protestant senior pastors say religious liberty is on the decline.
Women are particularly concerned about the potential impact of Islam, with 44 percent viewing it as a risk to American religious freedom, compared to 34 percent of men. A similar gender divide emerged in previously released LifeWay research about Sharia law, with more women than men worrying America could come under the Islamic legal and moral code that limits women’s rights. Young adults, Hispanics see less threat America’s young adults are much less likely than their parents and grandparents to perceive Islam as a threat to religious freedom. Less than a third of 18- to 44-year-olds hold that view (31 percent internationally, 30 percent in the U.S.), compared to nearly half of those 45 and older (49 percent internationally, 48 percent in the U.S.). Previously released research found young Americans are less worried than their elders about Sharia law and more likely to say Islam can create a peaceful society. Hispanics also have relatively little concern about Islam’s threat to religious liberty in the United States (31 percent) or abroad (29 percent). In contrast, whites are more likely to believe Islam is a danger to religious freedom internationally (44 percent) and in the United States (41 percent).
LifeWay Research found differences along geographic lines as well, with Southerners more likely to view Islam as a risk to religious freedom than those in the West or Northeast. Evangelical Christians are the most likely to perceive Islam as a threat. The majority of evangelicals see Islam as a danger to religious freedom both domestically (55 percent) and globally (53 percent). In contrast, only 31 percent of Catholics, 34 percent of people from non-Christian religions, and 22 percent of the nonreligious see Islam as a threat to religious freedom in the United States. Internationally, Catholics perceive significantly greater risk at 38 percent, while the difference in opinion is slight for those from nonChristian religions (35 percent) and the nonreligious (23 percent). Protestants view U.S. and global risks equally at 48 percent. Overall, 45 percent of Christians say Islam is a threat to religious liberty internationally and 43 percent say it is a threat to religious freedom in America. “Most religious people desire that other people believe— even convert to—their religion, but how a religion’s followers treat those who choose another belief differs greatly,” Stetzer said. “A large minority of Americans are concerned with how the religion of Islam is treating people with different

HEALTH & COMMUNITY NEWS U.S. Top Court Backs Obamacare, President Says It's Here To Stay (Continued from page 1) Obama said the law has been "woven into the fabric of America." "After more than 50 votes in Congress to repeal or weaken this law, after a presidential election based in part on preserving or repealing this law, after multiple challenges to this law before the Supreme Court, the Affordable Care Act is here to stay," Obama added. The question before the justices was whether a four-word phrase in the expansive law saying subsidies are available to those buying insurance on exchanges "established by the state" has been correctly interpreted by the administration to allow subsidies to be available nationwide. The exchanges are online marketplaces that allow consumers to shop among competing insurance plans. Roberts wrote that although the conservative challengers' arguments about the plain meaning of the statute were "strong,' the "context and struc-

Magnetized Skin By Dean L. Jones, CPM At 4:38 PM on June 21, 2015, the summer solstice occurred officially marking the start of this year's summer season. Summer brings on all sorts of conditions and one not so welcomed is when mosquitoes get on the hunt for our blood. With that have you noticed how certain people seem to attract more mosquito bites than others? Well, a lot of it is due to how these biting insects have an acute sense of smell for certain food ingredients, and at the same time they seek out carbon dioxide. In view of that, this means mosquitoes tend to flock to larger people, plus research reveals that mosquitoes prefer those with type O blood. Body heat, movement or exercise, and sweat also draw them to certain bodies. Who knew how much mosquitoes pay attention to what we eat, going after things from salty snacks, sugary sweets, and other goodies on our skin. That is because these bloodsucking mosquitoes are extremely attracted to lactic acid. This means that wherever there is a food fest with pies, melting ice cream cakes and/or some type of sugary candy to celebrate summer the mosquitoes are sure to follow. As you would have it, these types of foodstuff items come with a saccharine aroma and act as a magnet for mosquitoes and other bugs. Dairy goods and highsodium diets increase the amount of lactic acid we produce, as a consequence, filling up on salty snacks like crispy chips, curly fries, roasted peanuts, or even that bacon on your burger; make us just that much more attractive to mosquitoes. Unfortunately, eating potassium-rich foods increase the amount of lactic acid we give off through our skin. Foods like bananas, potatoes, prunes, raisins, lima beans, avocadoes, and spinach are full of potassium, so snacking on these can make our skin a magnet to insects.

Dean L. Jones For those who drink alcohol, even a single beer can make you a target for mosquitoes. This is mainly due to how most alcohol drinks come as sweet-smelling beverages, the alcohol increases your body temperature, which makes you a target for the little blood-suckers because they are drawn to people with warmer blood. Something most people do not have to worry about is dinning on Limburger cheese which startlingly is a variety of cheese made with the same bacteria that cause feet to stink and mosquitoes love smelly feet. Pickled veggies contain lactic acid; therefore they attract those dreaded mosquitoes. Kimchi is another condiment that makes human blood a little sweeter to mosquitoes. Having a higher level of cholesterol in your blood increases your appeal to mosquitoes, not to mention it being a health hazard all by itself. Eating more fruits and veggies, and opting for lean meats can help to lower cholesterol levels. In brief, reduce your summer mosquito bites by increasingly living more SugarAlert! www.SugarAlert.com Dean Jones is an Ethics Advocate, Southland Partnership Corporation (a public benefit organization), contributing his view on certain aspects of foodstuff.
senting opinion inside the court's white marble and crimson-draped setting. Scalia said the statute's words were clear, that Congress wanted to limit the credits to the state exchanges. Scalia recalled the court's 2012 decision upholding the law, again over his dissent. "We really should start calling the law SCOTUScare," Scalia said. SCOTUS is the acronym for the Supreme Court of the United States. "This court has no free-floating power to rescue Congress from its drafting mistakes," Scalia added. Roberts, sitting next to him on the bench, sat stone-faced. He smiled slightly at the SCOTUScare line, but otherwise betrayed no emotion.
Conservative Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito joined Scalia's dissent. The Obama administration said 16.4 million previously uninsured people have gained health insurance since the law was enacted. There are currently around 26 million Americans without health insurance, according to government figures. "This is not about the Affordable Care Act as legislation, or Obamacare as a political football. This is healthcare in America," Obama said. Congressional Republicans vowed to continue efforts to repeal Obamacare despite appeals from Democrats for them to stop. The top two congressional Republicans denounced the law on Thursday. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnnell said it makes life "miserable" for many people it purports to help. House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner called it "fundamentally broken." The U.S. hospital industry breathed a collective sigh of relief on Thursday and investors cheered that the growing number of paying customers created by Obamacare would not disappear. The ruling sparked a broad rally in shares of health insurers with an especially heavy stampede into hospital operators, which were seen as being at particular risk of facing steep losses
had the subsidies been struck down. Shares of hospital chain Tenet Healthcare surged 12.2 percent to rank as the biggest gainer for the day in the S&P 500. Four other hospital operators' shares hit lifetime highs: Community Health Systems, HCA Holdings, Universal Health Services and Lifepoint Health, with gains ranging from 7.6 percent to nearly 13 percent. Conservatives have called Obamacare a government overreach and "socialized medicine" and launched a series of legal challenges. The current case started as a long-shot by conservative lawyers opposed to law. Financed by a libertarian Washington group called the Competitive Enterprise Institute, the lawyers recruited four people from Virginia as plaintiffs. The lead plaintiff was a self-employed limousine driver named David King. The plaintiffs said they were "deeply disappointed" with the ruling. The law "unfairly restricts the health insurance choices of millions of people, and it threatens their jobs as well," they added. The case is King v. Burwell, U.S. Supreme Court, No. 14-114. BUSINESS & COMMUNITY NEWS OPM Chief Rebuffs Lawmakers On Scope of Cyber Breach By Doina Chiacu (REUTERS)WASHINGTON—The director of the Office of Personnel Management refused on Wednesday to estimate how many millions of Americans were affected by recent attacks on her agency's computers and rejected as premature reports 18 million were compromised. Under blistering attack from lawmakers exasperated by unanswered questions about the massive cybersecurity breach, OPM Director Katherine Archuleta conceded the number of people whose data was hacked could increase from initial reports. OPM said this month it was victim of a cyber attack involving personnel data on 4.2 million current and former federal employees. Another attack targeted information of millions more Americans who applied for security clearances. Some media reports said 18 million were affected in that attack. "It is my understanding that the 18 million refers to a preliminary, unverified and approximate number of unique Social Security numbers in the background investigations data," Archuleta said at a House of Representatives hearing. "It is a number that I am not comfortable with at this time." In her second appearance in as many weeks before the Oversight and Government Reform Committee, Archuleta defended her agency's response to the intrusions. The hearing, which lasted four hours, was the second of at least three this week on the OPM breaches. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell criticized her Tuesday testimony as "world-class buckpassing" and said there was a "management problem" at the agency.
U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Director Katherine Archuleta testifies before a hearing of the Senate Appropriations Committee concerning a recently revealed data breach affecting millions of federal employees' personal data, on Capitol Hill in Washington June 23,...Reuters/Jonathan Ernst Lawmakers have criticized the OPM response to questions about the hacking sluggish and incomplete. Some called on the director, who has been in her job less than two years, to resign or at least take the blame for the sweeping breaches, which U.S. authorities suspect are the work of Chinese hackers. U.S. Representative Jason Chaffetz, the Republican committee chairman, exasperated by Archuleta's refusal to provide numbers, asked whether all 32 million current and former federal workers in its database could have been compromised. But Archuleta steadfastly refused to give an estimate. "As much as I want to have all the answers today, I do not want to be in a position of providing you and the affected individuals with potentially inaccurate data," she said. Archuleta said the second breach is still being investigated and that the number of people affected by that data intrusion "may well increase from these initial reports." Lawmakers also criticized agency contractors,
whose practices have been cited as a factor in the successful hacks. Representative Elijah Cummings, the senior Democrat on the panel, singled out contractor KeyPoint Government Solutions for being the weak link that allowed hackers into the OPM system. Lawmakers said they were frustrated with a lack of information from that company's chief executive, Eric Hess. "I find myself utterly dissatisfied with the explanations we've heard today," said panel Democrat Matt Cartwright. (Reporting by Doina Chiacu; Editing by David Gregorio, Bernard Orr)

Congresswoman Waters’ Statement on King v. Burwell On Thursday, Congresswoman Waters said, “Today, for the second time, the Supreme Court has upheld the Affordable Care Act. The Court’s decision ensures that all eligible Americans will continue to have access to affordable health insurance, regardless of their home state. This decision is a victory for the American people and President Obama. Despite the many attacks by the conservative right wing, President Obama’s signature legislation, commonly referred to as Obamacare, has been upheld and protected by the Supreme Court on a 6-3 vote. The Affordable Care Act is working for American families. The tax credits that were targeted by this court case have helped millions of
Americans in every state obtain affordable health insurance, including more than 1.2 million people in California. After five years of the Affordable Care Act, discrimination against people with pre-existing conditions has become a thing of the past, and the nation’s uninsured rate has fallen to 11.9 percent, its lowest level ever. Republicans have voted 60 times to undermine or repeal the Affordable Care Act, and they have lost twice in their efforts to overturn it before the Supreme Court. NEWS Supreme Court Rules Obamacare Subsidies Are Legal (NPR)-The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday handed the Obama administration a major victory on health care, ruling 6 -3 that nationwide subsidies called for in the Affordable Care Act are legal. As NPR's Nina Totenberg reported in March, opponents of the law contended "that the text of the law does not authorize subsidies to make mandated insurance affordable in 34 states." At issue were six words in one section of the law. As Nina pointed out: "Those words stipulate that for people who cannot afford health coverage, subsidies are available through 'an ex-
change established by the state.' " She added: "The government [contended] that those words refer to any exchange, whether it is set up by the state itself or an exchange run for the state by the federal government in accordance with individual state insurance laws and regulations. The challengers [said] the statute means what it says and no more." The court agreed
Thursday with the government's position. The decision comes three years after a bitterly divided high court upheld the Affordable Care Act as constitutional by a 5-4 vote. President Obama made a statement on the ruling late Thursday morning, saying the Affordable Care Act "is here to stay." Today's case was King v. Burwell.

Izzy’s Column Michaels New Toy By Israel J. Matthews Contributing Writer
Hello, This is Mr. Israel Matthews. Today we’re going to talk about making money.
The
story
is
called
Michael’s new toy. Michael went shopping with his mom. As he was walking near the toy store he saw a toy called the Robomack. It looked fun to play with and he asked his mom if he could have it. She said, “sure you can have it, but you have to work for it.” Michael was fine with that as long as he could have the toy. Michael and mom drove home. As they were heading home mom said, “if you want that toy you have to clean dishes, do the laundry, and also clean your room. He went straight to cleaning his room. When he was done cleaning his room he started on the laundry. After he finished with the laundry it was dinner time. Michael loved his meal. When he was done eating his food he washed the dishes. The next day he went to the mall and he received the toy. After he received the toy, he then ate his food. He loved the food but not as much as he loved the toy. Michael remembered what his Sunday School lesson said in 2 Thessalonians 3:10 “If you don’t work, you don’t eat.” Thanks for reading. stay tuned bye-bye.:} GOD BLESS.
LOS ANGELES— Detectives from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Transit Policing Division, are seeking help from the public in identifying a suspect who slashed a patron on Metro bus line 210, on May 13, 2015, at approximately 6:15 AM. Detectives believe the male Black suspect, had a verbal exchange with the victim as they boarded the bus. The suspect later intentionally cut the victim in the face several times with what witnesses described as a box cutter, prior to running off the bus at Crenshaw Boulevard and Rosecrans Avenue, Gardena. The 36-year-old male victim sustained multiple complex lacerations to his face. LASD Transit Detective Tom Inocente says that although they have photos of the suspect, obtained from the interior of the bus and from a local business (see attached), they have not been able to obtain an identity on the suspect. “This is of great concern to us as
this person attacked the victim when he did not pose a threat to him. He (suspect) indeed poses a threat to the community and needs to be taken into custody.” Detective Sergeant Paul Valle says: “A crime like this committed on a bus is indeed rare and demands our full attention to identi-
fy and apprehend the assailant. That’s why in a situation like this, we need someone to step forward and help us identify the person responsible.” Please take a close look at the photographs. The suspect is described as male, Black, black hair, brown eyes, 5’ 6”, 165 pounds, 28 to 34-year-old. Reports are that he frequents the area in which the crime occurred. If you see him, do not approach. He should be considered dangerous. NATIONAL/STATE & REGIONAL NEWS President Speaks at National Mayor’s Conference in SF By Anna Challet California Black Media SAN FRANCISCO — On Friday, President Obama and Representative Nancy Pelosi had a message for the nation’s mayors — economic recovery will come at the city level, and mayors must be the ones leading the charge. “It’s about paychecks,” said Representative Pelosi, speaking to over 250 of the country’s mayors at the U.S. Conference of Mayors
Patriotic Millionaires Members React to Sanders’ Inheritance Tax Proposal WASHINGTON, DC – Today, the Patriotic Millionaires - a group of more than 200 Americans with wealth of more than $5 million - reacted to “The Responsible Estate Tax Act”, introduced by Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT). “While our diverse membership holds varying opinions on the exact measures needed to reform our broken tax system,” stated Patriotic Millionaires Director of Communications Erik Altieri, “They all agree substantial changes are needed and proposals such as Senator Sanders' foster an important nationwide dialogue regarding the nature of taxes themselves and the role they play in running a successful nation.” Many members of the organization voiced strong support for Senator Sanders’ latest legislation. “This country was founded on the principle that who you are ought to matter more than who your parents were. Dynastic wealth is corrosive to everything the United States of America is supposed to stand for,” stated Ron Garret, Founder and CEO of Spark Innovations Inc., “It is corrosive to democracy. It is corrosive to capitalism. It is corrosive to freedom. In life there will always be winners and losers, but everyone is entitled to a level playing field and a fair start.” The legislation includes several reforms to the current estate tax, including ending tax breaks for dynasty trusts, that were constructed to circumvent the tax code and which have allowed billionaires to pass fortunes from one generation to the next without paying any tax on their inheritance. “For too long has the top 1% of this country held a stranglehold on our policy making,” said Patriotic Millionaires chair and former BlackRock Inc. executive Morris Pearl, “This control is evidenced in recent attempts to completely repeal the estate tax. Those of us who have benefited so much from the opportunities our country provides should be willing to give back to those who are still trying to make a place for themselves in our economy.” This measure begins an important discussion regarding the influence of high net worth individuals on our political system, many of whom have long used their wealth to compel politicians to stack the deck in their favor, at the expense of working and middle class families.
President Barack Obama makes remarks before the U.S. Conference of Mayors in San Francisco, Calif., June 19, 2015. (Official White House Photo by Pete Souza) at the San Francisco Hilton. “Our recovery will not be complete until we recognize that middle-income families are the source of economic recovery … The middle class is the most important engine of economic growth, and mayors know that bigger paychecks come from building better infrastructure.” Following Pelosi, President Obama continued her line of thought: “We can keep paying the costs of patching over our existing infrastructure — more expensive, less efficient, leading to higher commute times, more waste — that’s an option. Or, we can create tens of thousands of jobs right now building a 21st century infrastructure that makes us competitive.” Pelosi brought the conversation around to technology infrastructure and inequality in the education system. “It’s not just [about] bridges,” she said. “It’s about
broadband … If we are going to solve the opportunity gap in our country, we must address the education gap, and one way to do that is with technology.” And, she says, it’s up to mayors to get the job done. “In order to get the broadband, municipalities must be in the lead,” she said. “It has to happen at the municipality level, not the state level.” Pelosi noted that as of 2012, only 37 percent of the nation’s schools had enough broadband to enable digital learning, putting 40 million children “on the wrong side of the digital divide.” “This is immoral. It has an obscenity about it, because the opportunity gap and the education gap are only going to widen,” she said. Pelosi and Obama shared the stage at the opening of the annual
conference, which brings together the mayors of larger U.S. cities to discuss issues ranging from jobs and the economy to climate change and urban policing. The President spoke about mayors’ role in nationwide discussions about policing, saying that it’s mayors who must continue to show leadership in “making sure police have the resources they need to do their job, and making sure that every police officer who has an incredibly tough job is trained in making the kind of connections with community that engender trust and ensure that everybody is treated equally under the law.” He echoed Bay Area-based rapper MC Hammer, who’d spoken earlier in the program. “You don’t want your kids abused, you don’t want [people] to be snatched out of cars,” he said to the group of mayors. “These are things that
make people feel less than human.” Both President Obama and Representative Pelosi noted that Charleston mayor Joe Riley was not present, remaining in South Carolina after the shootings at a historic African American church in Charleston left nine dead on Wednesday night. President Obama said that the roots of the tragedy lie in racial hatred, enabled by a continued lack of gun safety reform. “The apparent motivations of the shooter remind us that racism remains a blight that we have to combat together,” he said. “We have made great progress but we have to be vigilant because it still lingers.” Noting that more than 11,000 Americans died due to gun violence in 2013, he said, “If Congress had passed some commonsense gun safety reforms after Newtown, after a group of children had been gunned down in their own classroom … We wouldn’t have prevented every act of violence or even most. We don’t know that it would have prevented what happened in Charleston. No reform can guarantee the elimination of violence, but we might still have more Americans with us.” While saying that “today’s politics makes it less likely that we see any serious gun safety legislation,” he added that he is “not resigned”: “Every country has violent, hateful, or mentally unstable people. What’s different is not every county is awash with easily accessible guns … I refuse to act as if this the new normal, or to pretend that it’s simply sufficient to grieve and that any mention of doing something to stop it is somehow politicizing the problem.”
Baltimore Rawlings-Blake Sworn In As 73rd President Of The U.S. Conference Of Mayors SAN FRANCISCO, PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The presidential gavel was officially handed to Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake today by outgoing U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM) President Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson, appointing her head of the nonpartisan organization during the 83rd Annual Meeting of the USCM Annual Meeting in San Francisco, CA. There have been four women mayor presidents of the organization – Elizabeth Kautz of Burnsville, MN, Beverly O'Neill of Long Beach, CA, Deedee Corradini of Salt Lake City, UT, Kathryn Whitmire of Houston TX and Helen Boosalis of Lincoln, NE. Rawlings-Blake is the sixth woman president, but the first African American Female to take the post in the eighty-three year history of the organization. During the four-day gathering of nearly 300 mayors, city leaders met to discuss a broad range of policy issues impacting America's cities and their economic health including community policing, federal investment in America's cities and public-partnerships that drive innovation and efficiency. As Conference President, Mayor Rawlings-Blake will set the organization's agenda, appoint committee and task force chairs and serve as
Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake
the national spokesperson for the June 2015-June 2016 term. In her inaugural remarks, Mayor Rawlings-Blake spoke to issues of community policing and its direct connection to the lack opportunity in many communities. "At a time when women and African American women especially, still face many challenges, the honor of being a female President of this organization and the first African American female President is not lost on me. … We talk a lot about how cities are on the upswing. Articles and books are being written about the new renaissance that's taken place reversing a trend of decades of decline of cities. And it's all great. But as you all saw two months ago there are still very large segments of our cities that feel disenfranchised, disaffected and disgusted. They don't see the growth
and positivity that occurs in other parts of town. It's an issue of opportunity as much as it is an issue of policing. It's as much an issue of jobs as it is policing. It's as much an issue of community development as it is policing. It is as much an issue of education as it is community policing. And we don't lose sight of that." Rawlings-Blake underscored the strength of cities and explained she would ensure urban issues are infused into the 2016 political discussion. "We will make sure that our priorities are part of the national debate and that commitments are made to our cities and urban America. I want this year to be the year that we make our voices heard and drive the agenda. … Nearly 90 percent of the people and 90 percent of the jobs are in our metro areas. And because of that, Washington needs to step up." She also reminded the mayors of power of the bipartisan organization. "But we're not waiting for others to help. Every day in every way, each of us are making progress in our cities. And that progress is propelling our country forward. We need to own our power. …Part of this compact should not be what we are asking others to do for us but we can do for ourselves. We can show the progress and impact we collectively can and do make to
create a new normal. That we put our money where our mouths are and so should our State Houses and so should Washington." To view Mayor RawlingsBlake's entire inaugural speech, please visit www.usmayors.org. "She's been elected by her peers said Tom Cochran, USCM CEO and Executive Director. "It's one of the highest honors you can have as a mayor. For one year, she's America's mayor. It's a very powerful position." Prior to becoming the President of the Conference of Mayors, Rawlings-Blake served as Vice President over the past year. Before being elected to serve on the organization's Executive Committee, she was a member of the Mayors' Water Council for two years (2010-2012), and then became its cochair in 2012. Most recently, Rawlings -Blake served on a special working group of mayors and police chiefs put together by Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson during his Presidency to develop a series of recommendations for local and national actions intended to improve policing in America. The group presented its final recommendations to President Obama's Task Force on 21st Century Policing at its Winter Meeting in January in Washington, D.C.
