Bell, principal, Roselee Jackson, Parent Center coordinator and Cynthia Black, volunteer, have worked diligently to ensure that the parents of BOGPA are recognized for their tenacity and endurance in helping to make BOGPA a school of success and continued growth since its inception in 2010.

The Rev. Omarosa Manigault kindly and graciously accepted their invitation as the first keynote speaker.

Women History Month is a significant time to celebrate the many outstanding endeavors women have made and Rev. Omarosa is a stalwart in women accomplishments.

While many people know Rev. Omarosa from her role on NBC's reality TV Series, The Apprentice, produced by Mark Burnett, she is also a woman of

substance with many divine assignments. One of them is as Assistant Pastor of Weller Street Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles.

Rev. Omarosa is the founder of ASK (Ask, Seek, Knock) Missionary Organization—a ministry dedicated to living out the works of Christ. She shares diligently in ministry with her family, friends, students and her community.

She said her greatest passion is her international missionary work, as well as her lifelong work with at-risk youth and homeless women and children.

She has worked on behalf of the Positive Vibrations program in Compton, CA and the Fred Jordan Mission, on Skid Row in LA. She has done missionary work in Nigeria, Senegal, Guyana, and the Gambia. Her most recent missionary assignment

This fun annual celebration was held on Saturday, March 8th, inside Uncle Darrow’s Cajun Creole Eatery and the outside backlot.

The weather felt like it was Summer, coupled with a pleasant Spring breeze. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, “we experienced a minor earthquake near Marina del Rey. This light to mild quake, gave the region a jolt on Friday evening. The quake measured 3.2; it struck at 8:16p.m. The epicenter was a mile southeast of Marina del Rey." I didn’t notice anyone with frayed nerves, after the quake, amongst the masked revelers gathered for this festive occasion. Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Maxine Waters (CA-43) joined her Democratic colleagues in signing a discharge petition to extend unemployment insurance. This special congressional procedure allows a majority of members to bypass Speaker Boehner and force an up or down vote on the Emergency Unemployment Compensation Extension Act (H.R. 3546). This bill would extend emergency unemployment insurance for nearly 5 million Americans looking for work through the end of the year.

"Unemployment insurance is a critical lifeline for millions of families. In 2012, it kept 2.5 million people above the poverty line, including 600,000 children," said Congresswoman Waters. "Since Republicans let the program expire just three days after Christmas – more than 2 million Americans, including nearly 340,000 here in California, have been deprived of the support they need to get back on their feet." The number of people who have lost their unemployment benefits as a result of the program’s Dec. 28th expiration surpassed two million last week, according to a new analysis from House Ways and Means Committee Democrats. Every week, 72,000 people, on average, are losing their unemployment benefits nationwide without an extension of the program. Despite the growing struggles, House Republicans have blocked multiple efforts by Democrats to bring up legislation to extend the program on the House

And we all know the enormous strain, stress and heartache experienced by those families unsure of where their next paycheck is coming from," added Congresswoman Waters.

Hello Readers, Praise God, I am so glad we are here to welcome you to see Israel acting debut in the Long Beach Opera, “The Death of Kinghoffer”. It is playing at the Terrace Theater this weekend in Long Beach.

I am truly grateful for all those who have supported and encouraged Israel, my 9-yearold grandson. He is such a character and most of all he is such a young man on fire for God. He is truly a blessing to me and my family.

His mother Malika is so proud of him. He is in the fourth grade at St. Eugene Catholic School and he loves learning.

Keep him in your prayers as he will be acting for the first time in front of an audience of more than 3000. He has already said he is not afraid because he knows that God will keep him and give him peace.

That is amazing when a child speaks so much wisdom.

Also, this weeks issue is featuring Rev. Omarosa who will be speaking at the Barack Obama Global Preparatory Academy middle school in Los Angeles on Monday, March 24 at 10 a.m.

“12 Years a Slave’s” and the Tides of History

Daniels Now, the world knows something of the story of Solomon Northrup, a “free” Black American from New York who was kidnapped by slave-hunters in the 1840s and for the next 12 years suffered the life of a captive in America’s man-made hell of Negro Slavery. And now, the world knows a truer version of what antebellum America’s “peculiar institution” – its peculiar evil – was and the pain it caused the nearly 4 million Africans and African-Americans directly ensnared in it and the half-million other blacks who, like Northrup, endured a precarious status that was far from true freedom.

“Twelve Years a Slave” gained Hollywood’s highest honor, the Academy Award for the best picture of 2013, capping a spectacular run of film-world honors and “buzz” from its opening last year. It became the first feature film directed by a Black man to win the top Academy Award; and its victory was made all the sweeter by Lupita Nyong’o winning the Oscar for best supporting actress. Understandably, the glow of the acclaim rightly awarded the film and the emergence of its director, Steve McQueen, and Nyong’o as artists of the first rank is still neon-bright.

So, it may be difficult for some to see the broader current of history that envelops both the film and Solomon Northrup’s 1853 written narrative of the same title—to understand what his experience of pain and brutality, countered, most importantly, by an indomitable will to re-gain his freedom shares with some recent developments that at first glance seem far removed in time and distance.

I’m thinking, for example, of the stunning discovery in Munich, Germany late last year of more than 1,400 paintings stolen or confiscated by Nazi officials from their Jewish owners and from museums during the 1940s a shadowy, reclusive German had hidden away in his apartment all these decades. And I’m also thinking of the efforts of Japan’s current prime minister to erase the facts of the country’s savage expansionist policies and actions – and crimes against humanity – during the wars on the Asian mainland and in the Pacific in the 1930s and 1940s. The contrast is striking. On the one hand, the world has re-discovered paintings by some of the greatest artists of the last three centuries which had been lost to the world for nearly 70 years – an incalculable re-addition to the world’s cultural

treasure. On the other, Japan’s national political leader is trying to pretend the evil his country engaged in a half-century ago didn’t happen.

What these things, and many more, have in common is that they show that the events and facts of history can be buried, and rediscovered—and, if the world isn’t vigilant, buried again.

Certainly, until recently that has described the arc of Black Americans’ existence. Solomon Northrup’s memoir was widely publicized and sold well when it first appeared in 1853, as the furious national debate about slavery careened inexorably toward the Civil War. But it was largely forgotten in the war’s aftermath, and White America’s betrayal of Reconstruction. The truths of Black Americans’ enslavement and their achievements were most often distorted and drained of all positive meaning by “White” science, “White” theology, “White” politics, and “White” history—and, beginning with D.W. Griffiths’ landmark film of 1915, “Birth of A Nation,” by many of the “White” Hollywood movies that, far more than school history texts, were how most Americans “learned” about American history.

Indeed, its innovative cinematic techniques and concepts combined with its vicious racism to make “Birth” an enormously influential justification for the pervasive racist laws and policies Whites in the North and South had adopted and were adding to. And its portrayal of Blacks hung like a winding sheet over Hollywood films whose plots contained even minimal references to Blacks or a token number of Black actors. Its most prominent film offspring, 1939’s blockbuster, “Gone With The Wind,” powerfully reinforced for another three decades Blacks’ second-class status on and off the silver screen.

So, is it just a coincidence that “12 Years a Slave” has gained Hollywood’s most prestigious prize during the year that marks the 75th anniversary of the premiere of “Gone With the Wind,” and also the eve of the 100th anniversary of “Birth of A Nation?”

Or is it correct to think that the breakthrough of “12 Years a Slave” at the box office and at the Academy Awards is the result of not only a gripping story, excellent script and fine cast and director at work, but of history, too?

Maggie Lena Walker, Sarann Knight Preddy, Gertrude Pocte Geddes-Willis, Trish Millines Dziko, Addie L Wyatt or Marie-Therese Metoyer?

What about Ernesta Procope, Dr. Sadie Alexander, Or Dr. Phyllis Wallace? What about Bettiann Gardner, Lillian Lambert, or Emma Chappell? What about Ellen Holly, Mary Alice, or Edmonia Lewis?

If we knew anything about these women, it might cause all of us, African American men and women, to walk a bit more lightly, hold our heads a bit higher, and revel in the March is Women’s History Month, so it’s an ideal time to celebrate Black women who often get overlooked by other women as well as their own race.

History belongs to she who holds the pen, she who will speak up, speak out and tell the whole story. If the names of the sisters listed above aren’t as well known as others – like Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, and Mary McLeod Bethune – it is because no one has chosen to tell their stories.

There are a thousands of unsung heroines for every one we lift up and know, women who have made phenomenal contributions to the arts, literature, money, finance, and economic development.

Why write this now? African American History month (February) is usually about notable Black men. Women’s History Month (March) is usually about notable White women.

A book edited by Gloria T Hull, Patricia Bell Scott, and Barbara Smith is titled, But Some Of Us Are Brave: All the Women Are White, All the Blacks Are Men: Black Women’s Studies, As the title suggests, some of us are brave – and our young girls need to know that.

What difference would it make to our daughter and nieces if they knew about Septima Clark or Claudette Colvin? Had they read Lucille Clifton’s poetry, would they find it easier to breathe life into their words?

It pains me to watch Black Women’s History so swallowed that we are almost invisible. The most benign interpretation of this phenomenon is that those who lift history up are too myopic to consider African American women. Is there is a sinister interpretation? Is it that both racism and patriarchy combine to swallow Black women’s history?

International Women’s Day was March 8. Annually, the United Nations sets a theme for the commemoration. This year it was, “Equality for Women is Progress for All.” According to the UN, countries with more gender equality have better economic growth. Companies with more women leaders perform better. Peace agreements that include women are more durable. Parliaments with more women enact more legislation on key social issues such as health, education, anti-discrimination and child support. The evidence is clear: equality for women “means progress for all.”

We can’t make progress if we bury our history. We can’t put Melody Hobson in context if we don’t understand Maggie Lena Walker. We can’t truly celebrate women’s history unless we celebrate Black women’s history. Black women’s history is women’s history, too. It should be realized that both the African American community and the world community cannot progress if any segment of that community is relegated to the sidelines.

The place African American women hold in our history celebrations is quite similar to the space we occupy in contemporary life. We can get tens of thousands or more folks to turn out (as they should) in response to the massacres of Trayvon Martin and Jordan Davis, but the killing of unarmed Renisha McBride has caused much less of an outcry. Theodore Wafer, the White man (yes, race matters) who shot young Renisha, will be tried for second-degree murder in June. Will we remember this effrontery in the same way that we rallied for Trayvon and Jordan?

The sidelining of Black women is one of the reasons that the late C. Delores Tucker worked tirelessly for more than a decade to ensure that a bust of Sojourner Truth be placed in our nation’s capitol. And why not? Susan B. Anthony, Lucretia Mott and Elizabeth Cady Stanton are there. The fight to get Sojourner Truth to the capitol was led by Tucker, a lifelong leader and a founder of the National Congress of Black Women, Unfortunately, she did not live long enough to see the fruits of her labor. EDUCATION & COMMUNITY NEWS Mentors Wanted: How To Guide More Young Women To Success in STEM (BPT) - Careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) are growing and quickly. By 2023, STEM will generate a projected 2.6 million new jobs, creating a high demand for qualified employees with STEM backgrounds in the coming years, according to Georgetown Public Policy Institute's Center on Education and the Workforce.

Despite attractive career opportunities for the next generation of STEM workers, the industry continues to be predominantly male. Women make up only 24 percent of the STEM workforce, the U.S. Department of Commerce reports.

Several programs nationwide are working to close the gender gap by encouraging participation among female students in STEM projects, activities and lessons early on in their education. DeVry University's HerWorld is one such program. Its mission is to educate high school girls about STEM-related fields and connect them with real-life role models.

Throughout March,

designated National HerWorld Month by DeVry University, thousands of young women will interact with their peers, learn from experienced women in high-visibility STEM careers, and participate in confidencebuilding activities and hands-on workshops at HerWorld events across the country.

Hall Names Charlotte Brimmer Woman of the Year LOS ANGELES – Assemblymember Isadore Hall, III (D- Los Angeles) has named Charlotte Brimmer the 64th Assembly District’s 2014 Woman of the Year. Brimmer is a 20-year plus resident of the City of Carson and is an alumna of California State University, Dominguez Hills where she holds a Bachelors of Science degree in Sociology.

Brimmer’s commitment to her community has been demonstrated through her celebrated professional career including service as a Member of the Carson Planning Commission, a Project Manager for the Community Re-

One-third of women who enter STEM bachelor's degree programs after high school switch their major to a non-STEM field by the time they graduate, according to a study by the U.S. Department of Education and National Center for Education Statistics.

Demonstrating to teenage girls that there are women who will support them through their journey in STEM is an important part of HerWorld's objective.

This year for National HerWorld Month, DeVry University is partnering again with Mayim Bialik, best known for her television roles on "The Big Bang Theory" and "Blossom."

The renewed partnership between Bialik and DeVry is a natural fit given Bialik's own STEM background: she earned her Doctorate of philosophy in neuroscience in 2007.

"My biology tutor on the set of 'Blossom' was a tremendously significant mentor for me, inspiring me to look at

science and my academic skills in a different way," says Bialik.

"Though I am currently employed primarily as an actress and not a neuroscientist, I still benefited from a role model showing me what I could achieve in the sciences. I think young girls today deserve the same thing and I want to give them the confidence they need to succeed in STEM." The STEM industry has garnered national attention recently, most notably in President Obama's 2014 State of the Union Address.

"Teachers and principals in schools from Tennessee to Washington, D.C. are making big strides in preparing students with skills for the new economy - problem solving, critical thinking, science, technology, engineering, and math," says President Obama. "Some of this change is hard. It requires everything from much more challenging curriculums and more demanding parents to better support for teachers and new ways to measure how well our kids think, not how well they can fill in a bubble on a test. But it's worth it - and it's working."

HerWorld is part of this national momentum. Bialik and guest speakers who are role models from a variety of STEM backgrounds will show high school girls how they can apply their skills and intelligence to unique and interesting careers in STEM. Programs like HerWorld address a vital need to provide girls interested in STEM with mentors who can guide and motivate them throughout their educational and professional journeys.

Closing the gender gap requires opening the eyes of the next generation to the many possibilities in STEM, and no one can do that better than the women who have seen their own aspirations come to fruition.

There was a lot of shaking of the dancing kind, as revelers stayed on the makeshift dance floors. The bands set list consisted of the tunes “Sturdy Rock,” “Zydeco Cha Cha” intersperse with “Tequila,” “Ride Your Pony,” “Lucille,” “Dirty Rice,” and “Oh! The Crawfish Boil booth stayed busy all afternoon. Uncle Darrow’s Cajun Creole Eatery was constantly packed all afternoon with many regulars as well as an expanding fan base, experiencing the eatery for the first time.

All Rise For Enroll Call

By Olu Alemoru From California Black Media SACRAMENTO— With the March 31 Obamacare enrollment deadline fast approaching, one reality become inescapable: AfricanAmericans are poised to gain the most from low-cost health coverage through the Affordable Care Act, but are lagging far behind in the number of people enrolled.

Health care experts and community advocates agree on the urgency of getting more black consumers enrolled, and the facts behind that deep concern are stark: AfricanAmericans are 55 percent more likely to be uninsured than white Americans, and face a growing number of health and wellness disparities that cost lives and have endured for far

too long. Tragically, lacks have the highest cancer mortality rate of any racial and ethnic group are 40 percent more likely to have high blood pressure, but 18 percent less likely than whites to have it under control twice as likely to be diagnosed with diabetes suffer from an infant mortality rate that is more than twice that of whites, with black infants four times more likely than their white counterparts to perish due to complications related to low birth weight.

With the renewed focus on preventive and wellness that has come with Obamacare, African-Americans stand to gain much better health outcomes — if they would only enroll.

By Dean L. Jones, CPM It has been about 45 years since the bite-sized candy bars came on the scene. Well, it looks like the soda industry is taking a page from the candy industry's marketing play book to make their beverage presentation a little bit smaller. PepsiCo is now pushing a 7.5 ounce soda that is being touted as a mini-can.

Sadly, the stuff contained in the mini can is still harmful enough to make one sick, since it is the same ingredients of carbonated water, high fructose corn syrup, caramel color, processed sugar, phosphoric acid, caffeine, citric acid, and natural flavor.

For the record, natural flavors (artificial) are made by corporate scientists usually called flavorists, where in a laboratory by blending either natural chemicals or synthetic chemicals work to create all sorts of different flavorings.

Nonetheless, this mini-can of liquid contains 26 grams of processed sugar, which is the equivalent of 6½ teaspoons. Not to mention that it also packs 26 milligrams of caffeine and 20 milligrams of sodium. As a reminder, it is the American Heart Association who recommends no more than 6-teaspoons of processed sugar a day for women and 9teaspoons of processed sugar a day for men. So this mini-can is bordering on being a mini ambush of ill-health, in evidently creating various diseases in the human body from over consumption.

Smaller sized things have somewhat of a special charm and consumers may not see it as a threat due in part to its diminutive size. PepsiCo probably considered this where prospective consumers will believe a smaller amount will not be as harmful as a full sized container. But in essence a smaller sized product has the identical stuff to make it taste the same and consequently can put the same hurt as a full sized package because once a consumer is hooked on the substance its'

Major beverage companies believe that they are doing a good thing by not selling their sugaryfilled products in schools. Which sort of serves to show how there is danger associated with consuming the sugary-filled beverages.

From Kindergarten through 12th grade graduation, companies like PepsiCo only market beverages that meet federal, state and local laws. Although, outside of school in the course of extreme sports Mountain Dew, (a PepsiCo product), dominates the younger generation as the beverage to drink.

White Californians account for 54.7 percent of Obamacare enrollees, in the state. “It is extremely important [to be educated on the benefits of Obamacare] because all you hear and you see in the media is the negative stuff,” said Frederick B. BUSINESS & COMMUNITY NEWS White House, Democrats Cry Foul Over GOP Push to Enforce Immigration, Other Laws

By Emma Dumain A House Republican bill aimed at forcing President Barack Obama to enforce immigration and other laws as they are written drew sharp rebukes Wednesday from the White House and House Democrats, who ripped the measure as anti-immigrant.

The legal dispute over President Barack Obama’s unilateral decision to suspend deportations for people brought to the country illegally by their parents, known as “dreamers,” has split the GOP and Democrats before.

But on Wednesday the dispute threatened to end any lingering goodwill Democrats were inclined to extend toward GOP leaders, who just weeks earlier unveiled a set of immigration principles for overhauling the nation’s broken system — and then said Obama needed to earn back the GOP’s trust that he would enforce the law.

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney weighed in from the podium, where he spoke of House leaders’ interest in an immigration overhaul in the past tense.

Carney said the GOP’s legislation “runs contrary to our most deeply held values as Americans and asks law enforcement officials to treat these ‘dreamers’ the same way as they would treat those with criminal records. …

“You hear a lot of talk about where people are on this issue. It doesn’t require much to look at what House Republicans are doing today to question whether or not they’re serious about moving forward on comprehensive immigration reform,” he said.

But GOP leaders said Congress needs to act to curb what they consider to be Obama’s abuse of power on a

broad scale.

“His administration’s blatant disregard for the rule of law has not been limited to just a few instances,” Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., said on the House floor. ”From gutting welfare reform and No Child Left Behind requirements to refusing to enforce immigration and drug laws, the president’s dangerous expansion of powers appears to be endless. Whether one believes in the merit of the end goal or not, this is not how the executive branch was intended by our founders to act.”

The House passed a bill 233-181 on Wednesday that would authorize the House or the Senate to bring a civil lawsuit against the White House for executive overreach.

“The president doesn’t get to decide which laws he’s going to enforce any more than Americans get to decide which laws they’re going to follow,” Speaker John A. Boehner, ROhio, said in a statement. “The fact that the president would threaten to veto a measure requiring him to uphold his Constitutional obligations underscores why this bill is needed, and why Senate Democrats should pass it immediately.”

On Thursday, the chamber will vote on an additional measure forcing federal officials to justify to Congress each time they opt not to enforce certain laws.

Democrats backing an immigration overhaul were livid.

“I want to read to you from the Republican principles on immigration,” said Rep. Luis V. Gutiérrez, D-Ill., during floor debate on Wednesday. “This is what your caucus put forward. ‘One of the greatest founding principles of our country was that children would not be punished for the

mistake of their parents. It is time to provide an opportunity for legal residents of citizenship for those brought to this country as children through no fault of their own and no other place.’ Yet today you want to take away that very ability from the president of the United States.”

Rep. Zoe Lofgren, DCalif., who like Gutierrez has been a leading voice in pushing for a comprehensive immigration overhaul, also weighed in.

“We have had one vote on immigration here in Congress. It was on Congressman King’s bill to deport the Dream Act kids,” said Lofgren on the Rep. Steve King, RIowa, amendment that the House passed last year to override Obama’s executive action to defer the deportations of dreamers. Lofgren also wondered why the House had not yet seen legislation reportedly in the works from Cantor and Judiciary Chairman Robert W. Goodlatte, R-Va., tentatively

titled the Kids Act, that would help dreamers avoid being penalized for being in the country illegally through no fault of their own.

“We’ve heard a lot of discussion about a bill supposedly that’s going to be brought forward by the majority about the innocent children who’ve been brought here,” she said, “but we haven’t seen a bill.

Instead, we see these bills.”

LOCAL NEWS Jerome E. Horton Endorsed by California Democratic Party Jerome E. Horton, Chairman of the Board of Equalization, as a constitutional officer, was required to win 60% of the state delegates to the California State Democratic Party, held this weekend at the Los Angeles Convention Center in Downtown Los Angeles. Horton received unanimous support, becoming the Democratic nominee for Member, State Board of Equalization 3rd District.

Horton encouraged democrats to stay united and focused on empowering the President by taking back the House of Representatives and Senate. He proclaimed that poverty was the greatest threat to our democracy, stating that, according to Public Policy Institute of California, California’s poverty rate of 13.7% exceeds that of the nation at 11.8% with over 4.0 million people living in poverty.

Horton has launched a Campaign Against Poverty to recapture $1.2 billion in unclaimed earned income tax credits and $180 million in state refunds. This past weekend Horton also conducted a Volunteer Income Tax Preparation (VITA) Assistance and Family Resource Fair at California State University, Dominguez Hills, helping nearly 100 individuals file their taxes, claim their credits, and increase their potential for state and federal refunds. His VITA

program is responsible for helping seniors and individuals earning less than $52,000 recapture millions in refunds.

On Saturday, March 29, 2014, Horton brings his VITA program to Inglewood at the South Bay One Stop Business and Career Center, located at 110 South LaBrea Avenue, in Downtown Inglewood, in partnership with his wife, Inglewood City Clerk Yvonne Horton, Inglewood Councilman Ralph Franklin, and Inglewood Mayor James Butts.

By Ricky Richardson Los Angeles-The William Grant Still Arts Center presented “I Got My Pride”-The Blues Tales of Leadbelly exhibit with an Opening Reception and Concert on Saturday, March 1st, from 3:00PM6:00PM. This exhibit is part of the 6th Annual AfricanAmerican Composers Exhibition and Music Education Series. The exhibit is on display through June 7, 2014.

(Source-Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) Huddie William Ledbetter (January 20, 1888-December 6, 1949) was an American folk and blues musician, and multiinstrumentalist, notable for his strong vocals, virtuosity on the twelve-string guitar, and the songbook of folk standards he introduced.

He is best known as Lead Belly. Though many releases list his name as “Leadbelly,” he spelled it “Lead Belly.” This is also the usage on his tombstone, as well as the Lead Belly Foundation.

In 1994, the Lead Belly Foundation contacted an authority on the history of popular music, Colin Larkin, editor of the Encyclopedia of Popular Music, to ask if the name “Leadbelly” could be altered to “Lead Belly” in the hope that other authors would follow suit and use the artist’s correct appellation.

Although Lead Belly most commonly played the twelvestring guitar, he could also play the piano, mandolin, harmonica, violin, and accordion. In some of his recordings, such as in one of his versions of the folk ballad “John Hardy,” he performs on the accordion. In other recordings he just sings while clapping his hands or stomping his foot.

The topics of Lead Belly’s music covered a wide range of subjects, including gospel, blues about women, liquor, prison life, and racism: and folk songs about cowboys, prison, work, sailors, cattle herding, and dancing.

He also wrote songs concerning the newsmakers of the day, such as Franklin D. Roosevelt, the Scottsboro Boys, and Howard Hughes. In 2008, Lead Belly was inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame.

patrons and blues lovers browsed the gallery that consisted of several books about Leadbelly, extensive collection of album records and other recordings, his FBI File, articles from magazines Blues Revue Quarterly, Downbeat, Living Blues and Blues & Rhythm: The Gospel Truth, as well as newspaper articles, photographs and other art work of Robert Johnson, Blind Lemon Jefferson and Lightning Hopkins.

The concert program got under way with an acoustic set of blues featuring Gregg Wright on guitar with Marcus L. Miller on cajon. This was a nice pairing, since many early blues guitarist would tap or stomp their feet for added rhythms. The cajon complimented this acoustic set on the tunes “Bourgeois Blues,” “Gallows Pole,” “Rock Island Line,” “Midnight Special,” “House of the Rising Sun.” These are original compositions

by Leadbelly, who also influenced various interpretations of tunes by Led Zeppelin, Johnny Cash and numerous other pop and rock musicians.

The acoustic set also featured an original tune by Greg Wright entitled “Between Heaven and Hell.”

The second half of the program featured a full band joining Gregg Wright on guitar, Eric Garcia on guitar, Al Threats on bass, Bobby Bryant on sax, and Marcus L. Miller on drums.

This tight band revved up the throttle during this lively, electric set of blues.

The band performed the same compositions from the acoustic set so that the crowd and I could hear different interpretations/perspectives of the

original compositions that were recorded by countless blues, pop, and rock musicians.

The electric set consisted of the spiritual tune “We Shall Walk through the Valley” with a sing-a-long audience participation. I’m sure you find yourself singing or humming the lyrics of “Goodnight Irene,” and “Midnight Special.” For an encore, the band performed “Bourgeois Blues” with several people dancing throughout the gallery like the atmosphere inside Babes and Ricky’s Inn or the famous 54 Ballroom back in the day.

The music of Leadbelly is also being presented in conjunction with The Department of Cultural Affair’s African American Heritage Music Education Program.

Through this series, the William Grant Still Arts Center focuses on teaching music and cultural history to beginning and intermediate students of all ages through practice and playing experience via the works of groundbreaking musical innovators in the tradition of the Arts Center’s namesake Dr. William Grant Still.

A culminating youth and community concert featuring student performances of compositions influences by learning Folk and Blues traditions through the work of Leadbelly, will take place on April 26, 2014.

STATE / NATIONAL & WORLD NEWS ‘Fiery’ Days Recalled in Reflection on S.C. Civil Rights Battles 50 Years Ago

(AP)— In 1960, Simon Bouie — a Black student at Allen University — was arrested for the only time in his life while leading a sitin aimed at integrating a lunch counter in South Carolina. With hundreds of fellow students, Bouie went to a Columbia drugstore, sat on a stool, and was taken to jail for trespassing.

"It was kind of a fiery time, and everybody had their guards up," Bouie, 74, said by phone recently, from his home in Philadelphia, where he is a pastor.

"Local people, it was just a shock to them to see all of us come in and sit there. They were seeing something they had not seen before."

Even decades later, Bouie's voice is animated as he describes the desire he and other young people had to see such places desegregated. The Columbia drugstore itself has been closed for years, although the building that housed it still stands.

Bouie's conviction was

ultimately overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court, which ruled it was illegal to charge people with trespassing without prior warning.

More than 50 years later, he is returning to Columbia to celebrate a renewed interest in discovering the civil rights past of South Carolina's capital city.

On March 14, he was one of a number of former activists on hand for the unveiling of a series of commemorative markers with images and information of notable events that took place in the Southern city. Several will be near the site of the former drugstore.

The event is part of Columbia SC 63, a retrospective effort undertaken by city officials to mark Columbia's place in the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s.

Like many southern cities, Columbia played a role in the campaign for equal treatment for blacks, as students held sit-ins and marched on the Statehouse. Allen University and Benedict College, both in Columbia's downtown, served as incubators for many

Until now, much of that history hasn't been widely discussed or displayed, and city officials hope visitors and residents alike can now get a better understanding of the city's place in history. "It permits Columbia to insert itself in the national narrative," Bobby Donaldson, a historian at the University of South Carolina, said of the look back at the city's history. "The Columbia story is a reminder that the movement took place in many places around the country."

In the 1960s, activists in many states around the South fought to integrate Whites-only facilities, such as lunch counters and public swimming pools.

While part of the overall struggle, however, some of Columbia's activities might have been overshadowed by higher-profile events elsewhere, like attacks on the "freedom riders" throughout the South, or the arrest of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. during protests in Birmingham, Ala. Donaldson has been part of a team researching the civil rights era in Columbia, poring over archival photographs and interviewing activists to piece together details from a somewhat forgotten history.

Some of that story, Donaldson said, included tidbits like knowing activist Malcolm X had appeared in Columbia, but not exactly where or just what he had said. "Now, we're able to fill in a great many of the details and allowed to show that the movement in Columbia was not isolated," Donaldson said. "These were leaders and students who were active with each other."

To Donaldson, part of the reason that Columbia's past may not have previously been discussed in detail is because many of its participants, like

Bouie, left the area and now live all over the country.

"When they left, they took the memories and the history with them," he said. "I'm hoping we can reach even more of those people, to let them know we are very eager to know more about their experiences here."

Activists like Bouie have contributed to other happenings over the past year that have been part of that education. A downtown movie theater hosted "civil rights Sundays," showing free

movies, accompanied by a question-and-answer session. The Richland County Public Library housed a gallery for photography from the era. A national traveling exhibit about the civil rights era made a stop in Columbia.

"We have been able to kind of put our arms around our story," said Kim Jamieson, spokeswoman for the Midlands Authority for Conventions, Sports and Tourism. "There are still pages being added to that story."
