EDITORIAL/OPINION Publisher’s Column

Dr. Gloria Zuurveen Founder /Owner/ Publisher/Photographer

Hello Everyone, Prayer is the key and faith unlocks the door. This is so relevant now in this season of Advent. We as a people are faced with so many issues that if it was not for God on our side I don’t know where we would be. But thanks be to God that He is and it is He who keeps us in the midst of this perverse and crooked generation. We must keep up the fight of trusting in God. It is a fight to believe when times get hard but we know that the enemy comes to kill, steal and destroy. He comes to steal our joy, he come to steal our faith in a true and living God. So we are not to get weary but to keep on trusting in God’s Holy Word. To keep on praying and to keep on believing that the same way He has kept our forefathers He will keep us through the rough times and the good. So in this Christmas season let us spread the joy of the Lord to everyone we meet. We are more than conquerors. We will not be defeated. We are the children of the Kingdom and we are royalty. We are recipients of all that the Father has for us if we will only believe we can receive the gift of life through His Son. Merry Christmas and may God Bless and keep all of you. For unto us a Child is Born.

Murder Cover-Up in Chicago By George E. Curry George Curry Media Columnist As more information emerges in connection with Chicago Police Officer Jason Van Dyke’s fatal shooting of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald on October 20, 2014, the more it appears that not only was an unjustified murder committed by a person who had sworn to uphold the law, there was a cover-up at every level. Even worse, the cover-up seems to be still in effect today as Mayor Rahm Emanuel and other officials scramble to cover their tracks. Let’s start with the videotaped incident itself. Perhaps the most illuminating public account of the shooting thus far was provided by Stephen Patton, head of the city’s law department, when he appeared at the City Council’s Finance Committee hearing on April 13, 2015. In urging the city to settle the case out of court for $5 million, he noted that Van Dyke, referred to in his testimony as Officer A, was culpable because: McDonald did not pose an immediate threat to Van Dyke; McDonald was walking away from Van Dyke at the time he was fatally shot; None of the other five officers on the scene saw fit to fire their weapons at McDonald, including Van Dyke’s partner; No other people were ever placed in danger and The use of deadly force in this case was unwarranted. For the past year, Illinois and federal authorities have supervised a joint grand jury. As proceedings dragged on, Mayor Rahm Emanuel doggedly resisted all calls to release dash-camera video of the shooting. After privately viewing the video, however, city officials acted quickly when attorneys representing the estate of the dead teen approached the mayor’s office about reaching a financial settlement. The city was in deep negotiations with attorneys for McDonald’s estate while the mayor was facing a tough re-election fight and eventual run-off with Jesus Garcia. A final deal was struck April 8, a day after Emanuel’s re-election. Five days later, the proposed settlement was presented to the Chicago City Council Finance Committee. Relying on the testimony of corporation counsel Patton, the City Council agreed to a $5 million settlement without a lawsuit being filed or members of City Council looking at the incriminating tape. There is little doubt that if the videotape had surfaced during the height of Emanuel’s re-election campaign, he would not have won a second term. So, he directed his corporate counsel to fight all efforts to have the tape released. Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez, who is up for re-election next year, said City Hall made the decision to withhold the videotape from the public. “They asked us our position in telephone calls – we said it was not our preference to release

it, but it was ultimately their decision because of the FOIA,” Alvarez spokeswoman Sally Daly told POLITICO. “We’re not party to the litigation on the FOIA.” But nothing prevented Alverez from releasing the incriminating tape. More than a dozen Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests had been filed seeking release of the tape, but it took a lawsuit by Brandon Smith, a freelance journalist, to compel its disclosure under public records laws. Cook County Judge Franklin Valderrama ruled that the police department could not use an ongoing investigation as a reason to lawfully withhold the video because other law enforcement agencies, not the department itself, were conducting the investigation. The dramatic footage shows McDonald walking away from Van Dyke when the policeman opened fire, striking the teen at least 16 times, including after his motionless body was already sprawled on the ground. Just before release of the videotape, Alvarez hurriedly did what she could have done all along – she charged Van Dyke independent of the grand jury with first-degree murder. A separate Cook County grand jury has been convened and is expected to formally charge Van Dyke with first-degree murder, which carries a punishment of 20 years to life. Meanwhile, the mayor forced and accepted accepted the resignation of Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy, citing a loss of public confidence. The mayor has appointed a new police accountability task force to examine the McDonald case and other department issues. One of those issues involves surveillance footage from a nearby Burger King. The manager told Chicago NBC/5 that officers entered the fast food eatery the night of the shooting and when they left, 86 minutes of video appeared to be missing. Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan has asked the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division to review Chicago’s police department’s practices, a move Emanuel has labeled as misguided. The mayor said in a statement, “First and foremost, we need answers as to what happened in the Laquan McDonald case, which is why the United States attorney should swiftly conclude his yearlong investigation and shed light on what happened that night, and the actions of everyone involved.” We already know what happened that fatal night. And we also know that Rahm Emanuel fought every step of the way to keep the video of what happened that night out of public view. Now that he has forced his top cop to resign, citizens should force Emanuel to leave office as well. George E. Curry is President and CEO of George Curry Media, LLC. EDUCATION & COMMUNITY NEWS Chicago Mayor Apologizes for Laquan McDonald’s Death As City Protests (AP) Mayor Rahm Emanuel, known for keeping vise -like control over Chicago and his own political image, finds himself in the weakest position of his long public career as he struggles to respond to a police scandal, claims of cover-ups at City Hall and calls for his resignation. The former White House chief of staff on Dec. 9 used a special meeting of the Chicago City Council to try to calm the firestorm, apologizing for the fatal shooting of a Black teen by a white officer and promising “complete and total” reform. “I take responsibility for what happened because it happened on my watch. And if we’re going to fix it, I want you to understand it’s my responsibility with you,” Emanuel said during a sometimes-emotional speech that lasted nearly 45 minutes. “But if we’re also going to begin the healing process, the first step in that journey is my step. “And I’m sorry.” The remarks were Emanuel’s lengthiest and seemingly most heartfelt since the public got its first look last month at the squad car video that showed 17-year-old Laquan McDonald veering away from officer Jason Van Dyke before he began shooting, hitting McDonald 16 times. Van Dyke is charged with first-degree murder. Critics have repeatedly accused him of keeping the footage under wraps until after he won a tougher-than-expected

Protesters block downtown access to freeways in Chicago on Dec. 9. Scott Olson / Getty Images spring election for a second term. The mayor has denied the claim and acknowledged Dec. 9 that he should have pressed for prosecutors to wrap up their investigation more quickly so the video could be made public. But his contrition did little to ease the anger in the streets. Hours after the speech, protesters overflowed an intersection in front of City Hall, then marched through the financial district and blocked a major intersection for a short time as police directed traffic around them. Officers guarded the doors to the Chicago Board of Trade as demonstrators approached. Outside City Hall, retired schoolteacher Audrey Davis carried a sign reading, “Mayor Emanuel is morally corrupt!” Calling the speech “politically expedient,” Davis

said, “I don’t want to hear anything from him except, ‘I tender my resignation.'” Davis, who is Black, said she fears for her 25-year-old grandson when he comes home from college. “Each time he comes home, my heart is in my throat in case he meets up with a racist cop,” Davis said. “We shouldn’t have to live like this.” Since the video emerged, Emanuel has scrambled to contain the crisis. He fired his police superintendent after days of insisting the chief had his support. He also reversed course on whether the Justice Department should launch a civil -rights investigation, saying he would welcome it only after presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and other top Democrats endorsed the idea. In news conferences, he has appeared worn

down, fumbling answers to reporters’ questions or avoiding them entirely by walking away, with cameras rolling. Emanuel has repeatedly said he will not step down, and the next election — should he seek another term — isn’t until 2019. Chicago has no statute or process in place for a mayor to be recalled, and most of the cries for Emanuel to resign have come from grassroots activists and residents, not from the city’s political powerbrokers. The most likely impact will come in the form of pushback from aldermen, who have long been considered a rubber stamp for the mayor’s initiatives, said political consultant Delmarie Cobb. She said the Black community “has been awakened,” and Emanuel can expect a tougher re-election if he tries again. “He definitely won’t run unopposed, and it will be a viable candidate,” said Cobb, who is black. The mayor won reelection in April by a healthy margin, but only after suffering the embarrassment of not getting a majority in a five-candidate February election, forcing the first mayoral runoff in decades. At the time, he pledged to listen more and to “bridge the gaps between the things that divide us.” In the months that followed, his public schools CEO, who oversaw closings of about 50 schools that angered many residents, was indicted on corruption charges. Emanuel also pushed

through the largest tax increase in city history to deal with a budget crisis. His administration has warned of massive mid-year layoffs in the public schools, and is in the midst of rocky contract negotiations with the Chicago Teachers Union. This week, union members are voting on whether to authorize a strike. They could hit the picket lines as early as March. After the video was made public, other flashpoints kept coming. Footage was released of another police shooting — this one deemed justified by prosecutors — and of another man who died in police custody. A review by the city’s quasiindependent police watchdog agency showed that of 409 shootings involving police since 2007, the agency found only two with credible allegations against an officer. Police reports from the McDonald shooting included officer accounts that differed dramatically from the video. In his speech, Emanuel noted the problems are ones that have plagued Chicago for decades, and that there are no simple solutions. “We have to be honest with ourselves about this issue. Each time when we confronted it in the past, Chicago only went far enough to clear our consciences so we could move on,” he said. “This time will and must be different.”

Michael Learns about Christmas By Israel Matthews Contributing Writer Hello. Michael was so happy it was almost time for Christmas break. He had so many ideas about what he wanted for Christmas. He kept making a list and checking it to see if he had put all that he wanted on it. Michael would keep reminding his mom about what he wanted for Christmas. He made promises to his mom just so he could get what was on his list for the big day. But Michael was given a lesson on the importance of Christmas and it was not because he was going to get so many presents from his mom, grandmamma, grandpa and other friends and family members. It was a lesson in the real meaning of Christmas. His mom called him to her and said, “Michael do you know that Christmas is about a baby.” Michael was confused. He asked, “What baby?” Mom said, “Christmas is about a baby name Jesus.” “He was sent by the Father to earth to save us all from our sins and we give gifts to celebrate his coming, his birth,” she said. Michael said, “I am glad to learn about why we celebrate Christmas.” “We can give gifts and received them knowing that the greatest gift is the one God gave us, His son, Jesus,” he said. The end. Thanks for reading, and remember Jesus is the reason for the season. Bye ;)

CHURCH & COMMUNITY NEWS Black Pastors Say Black Lives Matter Is 'Demonic,' 'Shameful' and 'Tragic' “Living in the Excellence of God’s Word” By Samuel Smith From the Christian Post Reporter WASHINGTON — A group of black pastors asserted Wednesday that in order to change the impoverished, crime-stricken cultures in America's inner cities, more emphasis needs to be placed on responsibility, education and entrepreneurship instead of blaming the police for problems facing troubled African-Americans. Bishop E.W. Jackson from The Called Church in Chesapeake, Virginia, and other black ministers from the organization STAND (Staying True to America's National Destiny) gathered at the National Press Club to announce the launch of Project Awakening, a privatesector, church-centered, comprehensive plan for the recovery of America's inner cities that focuses on teaching children they have options and responsibilities in life. While the pastors detailed how the project aims to build relationships between churches, police, the black community and businesses to create cultural renewal, entrepreneurial awakening, and technical education for inner city children, the ministers did not refrain from chastising the Black Lives Matter movement for propagating a "demonic" message that does not offer a solution but simply puts police officers in harm's way. With many in the Black Lives Matter movement quick to silence anyone who dares say that "all lives matter," Jackson, who is the founder and national president of STAND, explained at the press conference that such rhetoric only makes racial matters worse in America. "Let me speak with this admonition. I don't know everything they are saying, I know what I heard. With that proviso, what I have heard has not been good. What I have heard, to me, is divisive and demonic," Jackson stated. "We as Christians know that God created all of us, all of our lives matter, including the lives of unborn babies, they matter too. When you have people saying, 'you can't say all lives matter, we are not going to hear that,' that tells me there is something very, very wrong there." Leon Threatt, senior pastor at CFA Ministries in Charlotte, North Carolina, and STAND's national

Jackson, the founder and president of Ministers Taking a Stand, announces the launch of Project Awakening at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. on December 12, 2015 vice president, seconded Jackson's disapproval of the Black Lives Matters message. "I think perhaps their intent may be wanting to have a positive change, but I think the methodology is dividing the community," Threatt told The Christian Post after the press conference. "When we say 'black lives matter,' we may be over emphasizing the importance of one over the other, and it's my experience that our strength comes from our ability to work together." Threatt, who is a former police officer and has a son who is a cop, said he has been troubled by the call from some Black Lives Matter protestors to kill the "pigs." "I think when we divide community of color against law enforcement, we are weakening our ability. I think they need to check their message and their method. We need to work together," Threatt asserted. "I think the problems in the inner city is far beyond black, it requires the oneness of all the people: black and white." "Certainly, this pitting against law enforcement I am tremendously concerned about that. And we have witnessed that, and I find it quite disturbing that they would use language that would sanction and authorize the killing of law enforcement personnel. This is tragic and shameful that they would use such language," Threatt continued. "I witnessed on a news clip not long ago where they were

having a Black Lives Matter march and chanting 'Death to the pigs!' This kind of language is destructive and unacceptable." Threatt added that he believes the Obama administration has only "helped" further the divide America's communities. "I think the [Obama administration] has been part of the problem. I think that they have helped create the division a new sense of what it means to be a human being, a new sense of character." "Telling young ladies that your body is sacred and you shouldn't be having sex with any guy that comes along and tells you he cares about you, and telling young men they shouldn't be having sex with young ladies and fathering children that you can't then take care of. You ought to be waiting until you get married to have children," Jackson continued. As Project Awakening is still in its infancy, Jackson explained that churches in at least 20 states are beginning to embrace the proposal. "We got representation in 20 states and we got leaders in 10, and those leaders are building on the ground," Jackson explained. "If you include all the churches that are involved and all the members who are involved in those churches who are sort of joining in with Ministers Taking a Stand, it would number in the thousands. Our goal is to have representation from every state in the country."

So, What’s On Your Agenda For Today? God determines the number of your days, but you determine how they are spent. The Psalmist said, “This is the day the Lord has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.” YESTERDAY is a cancelled check, TOMORROW is a promissory note, TODAY IS ALL YOU’VE GOT. And you can BEGIN your life over today, if you live by these words: “Today I will delete from my diary two days— yesterday and tomorrow. YESTERDAY was for learning; TOMORROW will be a consequence of what I do today. TODAY I will face life with the conviction that this day will never return, that it may be the last opportunity I’ll have to contribute because there’s no guarantee I’ll see tomorrow. TODAY I will be courageous enough not to let opportunity pass me by; my only alternative will be to succeed. TODAY I will invest my most valuable resource, my time, into my most important possession, the life God has given me. I’ll spend each minute purposefully, making TODAY a unique opportunity. I’ll tackle each obstacle knowing that with God’s help I can overcome it. TODAY I will resist doubt and pessimism and warm my world with a smile. I’ll maintain a strong faith, expect nothing but the best, take time to be happy, see every task as an opportunity to honor the Lord, and endeavor to leave His footprints on the hearts of those I meet.” John Boykin wrote, “Time is your life—nothing more, nothing less. The way you spend your hours and your days, is the way you spend your life.” SO PRAY, “LORD, HELP ME TO MAXIMIZE THIS DAY.” THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: “TODAY IS THE FIRST DAY OF THE REST OF YOUR LIFE, SO GIVE IT ALL YOU GOT!!!”

HEALTH & COMMUNITY NEWS Deadline Nears for January Insurance Coverage Under the Affordable Care Act LOS ANGELES—An important deadline approaches for Californians who want to start the New Year with the protection of health insurance under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Open enrollment is underway and consumers who want to be covered on January 1, need to enroll by December 15. Covered California, the agency that administers the ACA in California, has made African American outreach a priority for the year three of the historic program. Since 2014, more than two million people have gotten insurance through Covered California, including African Americans who make up 5 percent of the state’s population that is eligible to receive financial assistance to help them pay for coverage and medical care. African Americans though have been slow to enroll at a rate that matches their share of the population. “While we have all worked together to dramatically raise awareness about the new law,

we have more work to do,” Covered California Executive Director Peter V. Lee said. “We estimate there are still more than two million uninsured people in California who are either eligible for Covered California or qualify for Medi-Cal.” Through Covered California, consumers can get financial help, or tax subsidy, that can be worth hundreds of dollars per month and bring health care within reach. We are spotlighting the fact that more than half of those who have enrolled in Covered California -- almost 700,000 -pay less than $100 a month, with the balance being covered by the federal tax credit. That is real affordability. “You can find out if you qualify for financial help, and examine your plan options, by using the “Shop and Compare Tool” at CoveredCA.com,” Lee said. Going forward Covered California will be spotlighting

Acid Reflux By Dean L. Jones, CPM The recurring outbreaks of food borne illnesses reported on a hefty number of companies like Blue Bell Creameries, Chipotle, Costco, Starbucks, Target, Walmart, Sams Club, Albertsons, Safeway, Vons, and 7-Eleven heightens personal decision of when, where and what to eat. This becomes even more critical for over 60 million Americans who suffer from acid reflux and are really cautious about consuming something that might cause serious discomfort. Over 20% of society suffers from acid reflux at least once a month, which basically is an unpleasant condition that causes a sour or bitter taste in the back of the throat, trouble swallowing, hoarseness, chronic cough and sometimes regurgitation. Acid reflux occurs when stomach acid rises up into the esophagus, sometimes reaching all the way to the throat or mouth. Commonly called heartburn, there are many acidic foods that can cause acid reflux, including obesity and smoking have also been linked to acid reflux and symptoms can substantially improve after weight loss and the discontinuance of smoking. The challenge with acid reflux is that we eat every day, but unfortunately too many think it is their birth right to eat whatever and whenever, no matter the possible physical disorders that may ensue. The thing is acid reflux can best be treated the better informed you are about the causes for acquiring it in the first place. It is highly recommended to follow an alkaline diet that emphasizes alkaline foods such as whole fruits and vegetables and certain whole grains, which are low in caloric density. Improving the digestive function will serve to reduce and hopefully avoid the overall symptoms of acid reflux. Cutting out all fried foods seems obvious, but this is so socially accepted as the 'go-to' treat that it is not easy to avoid or resist the temptation to eat. Nonetheless, fried foods are normally high in

Covered California Canvassing Neighborhoods – In an effort to enroll eligible African Americans in affordable health coverage, Covered California is launching an aggressive neighborhood canvassing initiative that includes door-to-door outreach, enrollment events at churches, branded outreach vans and educational materials at barbershops and hair salons in high-priority African American neighborhoods. Free enrollment assistance will continue throughout Open Enrollment, which ends January 31, 2016. enrollment events at storefronts, insurance agent offices, community events and other locations. Dean L. Jones trans-fats and slow down the overall digestive process, leaving excess acids that can eventually move upward into the esophagus. Nearly equally as harmfully to fried comes the many ways in which processed baked goods cause problems with acid reflux. Sweets like brownies and cookies create an acidic environment, especially if they are processed baked goods that are full of artificial colors and preservatives. By avoiding all forms of processed sugar and enriched flour acid reflux will become a thing of the past. Processed sugar ranks highest on the acidic list of foods, over meat (pork, lamb, beef, chicken, turkey), crustaceans, milk, eggs, cheese, ice cream, white pasta, white/whole meal bread, biscuits, soy sauce, artificial sweeteners, coffee, carbonated sodas, spicy foods, chili peppers, milk and of course alcohol. From experience, making excuses for refraining from eating popular foods can often seem uncomfortable not eating foods like the crowd, but the rewards of feeling good and healthy pays dividends by living SugarAlert! www.SugarAlert.com Mr. Jones is a marketing strategist with the Southland Partnership Corporation (a public benefit organization), sharing his view on mismanagement practices of packaged foods & beverages.

This year’s open enrollment period is three months long, and runs until January 31. However, if you qualify for Medi-Cal, you can enroll at any

point during the year. If you or someone you know doesn’t have health care coverage right now, this is the opportunity to enroll in Covered California.

NEWS Congresswoman Waters Statement on U.S. Supreme Court Justice Scalia's Comments in the Fisher v. University of Texas at Austin Case WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Congresswoman Maxine Waters (CA-43), Ranking Member of the Committee on Financial Services, released the following statement following comments made by U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia in the Fisher v. University of Texas at Austin (Fisher II) U.S. Supreme Court case. “I am appalled by the inflammatory remarks Supreme Court Justice Scalia offered yesterday that implied that black people were intellectually less capable than other Americans and therefore should not attend schools of high academic rigor. Justice Scalia’s comments are unacceptable under any circumstance, but are especially alarming coming from the bench of the nation’s highest court, where this kind of thinking has no place. Specifically, Scalia stated that “maybe [the University of Texas] ought [emphasis added] to have fewer” African Americans. Justice Scalia’s comments resurrect a sentiment that prevailed during the Jim Crow, ‘separate but

Congresswoman Maxine Waters

equal’ era; a sentiment that enabled the legal confinement of African Americans to the inferior and underfunded spaces of our nation, and ultimately relegated them to a secondclass life. This sentiment is indicative of a court that, in recent years, has already taken steps to undermine affirmative action and the Voting Rights Act. “It is disappointing and disturbing that a member of the Supreme Court holds beliefs that continue to perpetuate the idea that African Americans should only occupy

second-rate spaces. Although his comments were made in the context of education, the idea that African Americans are less deserving of quality access and opportunity permeates all aspects of our lives. It is why African Americans are more likely to be targets of predatory consumer products, charged more for home mortgages, denied good-paying jobs, or subject to countless other forms of discrimination and injustices on a daily basis. “Furthermore, Justice Scalia’s comments suggest that African American students should be resigned to an education afforded by private, post -secondary colleges, or forprofit colleges, which have been the subject of ongoing fraudulent scandals for decades. I have spent my career exposing the truth about these institutions and their predatory marketing practices that lure African American and other vulnerable student populations into enrollment and saddle them with debt, while failing to provide a quality education or the necessary skills and training to enter the workforce.

Justice Antonin Scalia

It is troublingly offensive and dangerous that Justice Scalia believes this is the type of education that Black students ought to receive. “It is my sincere hope that these comments not only serve as a reminder of the type of thinking that still exists at the highest level of decision making in this country, but that they also compel action from lawmakers and others to continue our fight to eradicate this disturbing philosophy engrained into many of our laws.

I also hope that the many African American students enrolled in universities, law schools, or medical schools and any institution where African Americans are not always welcome or accepted will not internalize Justice Scalia’s comments but will continue to persevere and strive for excellence as they do every day in a society that all too often fails to celebrate and uplift black excellence and academic achievement.”

BUSINESS & COMMUNITY NEWS University of West Los Angeles Now Accepting Applications for Introduction to Real Estate Development for Non-Profit Course By Gloria Zuurveen Editor-in-Chief LOS ANGELES—Many non-profit organizations in Los Angeles run on shoe string budgets with no workable mission, vision or strategic plan as to how they plan to maintain their existence or how they will stay relevant in the competitive world of non-profits. This niche market has two vision-oriented, seasoned professionals with an incredible wealth of knowledge about the business of non-profits. They are Richard Benbow and Leonardo A. Cablayan, Principals, The Consortium for Non -Profit Management (C4NPM). NATIONAL/STATE & REGIONAL NEWS Pew Study: Middle Class Declining, No Longer Majority By Tony Lee The middle class in America is declining and no longer constitutes a majority under President Barack Obama, according to a Pew Research study, which found that “after more than four decades of serving as the nation’s economic

majority, the American middle class is now matched in number by those in the economic tiers above and below it.” Pew found that the “share of American adults living in middle-income households has fallen from 61% in 1971 to 50% in 2015. The share living in the

Washington State Teen Charged with Hate Crime over Social Media Message By Eric Johnson From Reuters SEATTLE—A university student in Washington state was charged on Thursday under the state's hate crime statute with posting a racist threat on the anonymous social media platform Yik Yak, authorities said. The arrest came during a period of heightened tensions at U.S. colleges over allegations of racism on campus and violent threats against black students. Tysen Campbell, a 19year-old student at Western Washington University in Bellingham, was charged with one count of malicious harassment for writing: "Let's lynch her," on Yik Yak, referring to another student, the Whatcom County Prosecuting Attorney's Office said. He will be arraigned on Friday. Authorities have not identified the other student, but the Seattle Times reported on Thursday that university officials believe the message referred to Belina Seare, the student president, who is black. Seare has said she was the focus of racist and sexist messages posted on Yik Yak. Campbell, who is white, was arrested on Nov. 30 by cam-

pus police in Bellingham, about 90 miles north of Seattle, and suspended from the university pending the outcome of the case and an investigation by the school. If convicted, he faces up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine. University spokesman Paul Cocke said authorities were investigating other online messages targeting the school community. Classes were canceled for a day last month at the school after officials found numerous racially threatening online messages. Campbell's attorney could not immediately be reached for comment. The Seattle Times quoted Campbell's mother, Lisa Concidine, as saying her son told her he made a post that was sarcastic and that he immediately deleted it. Demonstrations against racism at college campuses across the United States, many linked with the Black Lives Matter civil rights movement, have gained momentum since student rallies led to the ouster of the president of the University of Missouri last month. Alternative Lenders Facing First Major Disruption By Antony Curry (Reuters)—Alternative lenders are facing their first major disruption. Competition has been intense among the likes of SoFi and OnDeck, which provide credit directly, and peer-to-peer matchmakers Lending Club, Prosper and others. At least 400 players have entered the market in the past 12 months alone, according to one participant. With interest rates poised to rise, the challenges could pile up fast. For starters, higher rates would increase the chances of loans going sour. Most of the upstarts focus on the subprime borrowers that traditional banks largely eschew. Even small payment hikes could put those debtors in the red. As defaults rise, funding for alternative lenders would probably get more expensive or disappear completely. They may not all rely on the same 12 sources for financing, as one industry executive has quipped, but loans from the likes of investment bank Jefferies and hedge funds Fortress and Waterfall Asset Management have become important to their survival. Non-bank subprime mortgage lenders used to operate in a similar fashion. Their demise shows that an increasing number of defaults can quickly persuade back-

ers to take their money elsewhere – and cause other funding methods like securitization to shut down. Developing more stable sources of funding is essential. Lending startup Earnest, for example, said in November that it is getting $200 million from a group led by New York Life, the epitome of a traditional institution. The credibility of the algorithms and other confidential formulas that alternative lenders use to evaluate potential borrowers could also be at risk. Earnest tries to judge a debtor’s willingness, as well as its ability, to pay. Affirm tracks social media for clues. And Vouch asks borrowers’ friends and family how much of a loan they’d be willing to guarantee. Then there’s Prosper, which loaned $28,000 to one of the shooters responsible for the recent massacre in San Bernardino, California – more than half the recipient’s annual salary. Whether the cash was used to buy weapons is not really the point. For the industry, it’s far more relevant that Prosper made a loan to someone who seemed unable to pay it back. Regulators will surely notice, prompting them to step up scrutiny of the entire sector. Coupled with the risks from rising rates, an industry shakeout looks like it’s on the horizon.

upper-income tier rose from 14% to 21% over the same period. Meanwhile, the share in the lowerincome tier increased from 25% to 29%.” According to the study that was released on Wednesday, “married adults (both with and without children at home) are more likely than unmarried adults to live in upper-income households and less likely to be in lower-income households” and white and Asians “are more likely than black and Hispanic adults to be in the upperincome tier, and they are less likely to be in the lower-income tier.” But “over the longer term, black adults sustained the largest increase in income status from 1971 to 2015 and were the only major racial or ethnic group to experience a decline in their lower-income share.” The study also found that “the rising share of immigrants in the Hispanic adult population” (29% in 1970 to 49% in 2015) is likely the reason why “Hispanic adults have slipped down the income ladder since 1971, driven by an increase from 34% to 43% in their lower-income share.” Foreign-born Hispanics were less likely to be in the middle class than U.S.-born Hispanics. The study also found that “in terms of differences by nativity, foreignborn adults are more likely than U.S.-born adults to be lower income (38% to 27% in 2015), and less likely to be upper income (16% to 22%).”

Pew defines “middleincome” Americans “as adults whose annual household income is two-thirds to double the national median, about $42,000 to $126,000 annually in 2014 dollars for a household of three. Under this definition, the middle class made up 50% of the U.S. adult population in 2015, down from 61% in 1971. Lowerincome households have incomes less than 67% of the median, and upper-income households have incomes that are more than double the median”: The income it takes to be middle income varies by household size, with smaller households requiring less to support the same lifestyle as larger households. For a three-person household, the middle-income range was about $42,000 to $126,000 annually in 2014. However, a one-person household needed only about $24,000 to $73,000 to be middle income. For a five-person household to be considered middle income, its 2014 income had to range from $54,000 to $162,000. According to Pew, “the hollowing of the American middle class has proceeded steadily for more than four decades. Since 1971, each decade has ended with a smaller share of adults living in middle-income households than at the beginning of the decade, and no single decade stands out as having triggered or

hastened the decline in the middle.” But the Great Recession and the housing crash, according to the study, especially hurt middle-income Americans, whose financial portfolios are more dependent on the value of their homes. The study also found that mechanics, laborers, and transportation occupations were some of the job groupings with “shrinking shares of overall employment” that “lost income status since 1971.” According to the report, “manufacturing accounted for 26% of employed adults in 1971, compared with 11% in 2014. In 1971, 15% of workers in nondurable goods manufacturing and 16% of workers in durable goods manufacturing had uppertier incomes, compared with 26% and 27% who did so in 2014, respectively.” The study found that “beginning in the early 1990s and intensifying during the following decade, jobs increasingly have been concentrated in highskilled and low-skilled occupations.” But politicians on both sides of the aisle have been pushing for massive increases in hightech guest-worker visas in addition to more low-skilled immigrants that will threaten Americans across all income levels, especially those looking to stay in the middle class and enter into it.
