The U.S. Treasury Department said on Wednesday that Tubman, who was born into slavery in the early 1820s and went on to help hundreds of slaves escape, would take the center spot on the bill, while Jackson, a slave owner, would move to the back. Hello Readers , It has been a trying week but thanks be to God I made it. I made it when all hope seemed to have been gone. But I praise God for the prayers of the righteous that availeth much. e don’t even know or understand the importance of prayer and the importance of immediately prayer when one ask for it for a certain concern they may have it is wise to understanding that prayer is always right. Anytime and any place. It is the right time to pray for the needs of others. It is always right to pray for the request from others and most of all it is good to pray for one self and trust that God hears your every request. Let us pray for the family and all the fans of Prince. The Legend and Icon who changed the way music and performing music was done. He was an inspiration to so many people all over the world and he felt the world’s pain as he would display his wisdom in his songs that moved a nation to mourn his death on Thursday after the news broke. God answers prayers. Try Him!

‘Bill O’Racist’ at It Again By George E. Curry George Curry Media Columnist I have written about Bill O’Reilly, a/k/a “Bill O’Racist,” in the past and his proclivity to distort the facts when discussing African Americans. Well, he’s at it again. On one of his recent shows on Fox News, he asked, “Don’t you think most AfricanAmericans know there are super predators among their ethnic group? Don’t they know it?” Earlier in the year, he said, “Well, Sanders says he is a straight talker but not, not on this issue. Here’s the truth. African-Americans make up 13 percent of the total population in the U.S.A. but commit 37 percent of all murders. And 90 percent of black murder victims are killed by other blacks. You will never ever hear either Bernie Sanders or Hillary Clinton say that. Republican candidates will not likely point it out either because it’s politically incorrect. It’s much easier to decry racism than actually address the root causes of violent crime which are a corrosive culture and collapse of the traditional family.” For the record, every racial and ethnic group has predators among its ranks, just as they have members who are positive forces. In his rush to blame everything on “corrosive culture” and “collapse of the traditional family” among African Americans, Bill O’Racist conveniently ignores some basic facts. He should have learned last November from Donald Trump’s re -tweeting an erroneous post that claimed that 81 percent of Whites are killed by Blacks. Not only was that fiction, the supposedly source for the figure —“Crime Statistics Bureau – San Francisco” – did not exist. As fact checkers pointed out at the time, only 15 percent of Whites are killed by Blacks. “Trump cast blacks as the primary killers of whites, but the exact opposite is true. By overwhelming percentages, whites tend to kill other whites. Similarly, blacks tend to kill other blacks. These trends have been observed for decades,” Politifact observed. Indeed, FBI stats show that few homicides are committed outside an assailant’s race. In fact, 8 percent of Blacks are killed by Whites and 90 percent of African Americans are killed by other African Americans. According to the FBI, 82 percent of Whites are killed by other Whites. Clearly, there is no “corrosive culture” factor among African Americans at play here. A report titled, “Black Homicide Victimization in the United States: An Analysis of 2013 Homicide Data” by the Washington, D.C. -based Violence Policy Center, provides further insight into Black homicides. The typical Black homicide victim was 31 years old; 7 percent were younger than 18 years old and 2 percent were 65 years old or older. Most – 87 percent – were male and 13 percent were fe-
male. The report notes that 84 percent of all Black victims (4,960 out of 5,891) were killed with guns. Of those, 73 percent were killed with handguns. Significantly, 72 percent (2,002 out of 2,766) of Black victims were killed by someone they knew. Only 764 were killed by strangers. Moreover, 51 percent of the homicides grew out of an argument between the victim and the assailant. Approximately 15 percent were reported to be gang-related. Instead of dwelling on Bill O’Reilly’s ignorant diatribe, the stats should point us in a different direction if we want to reduce homicides in Black America. First there is the larger issue of gun control. “Blacks in the United States are disproportionately affected by homicide. For the year 2013, blacks represented 13 percent of the nation’s population, yet accounted for 50 percent of all homicidevictims,” the Violence Policy Center report stated. “… For black victims of homicide, like all victims of homicide, guns – usually handguns – are far and away the number-one murder tool. Successful efforts to reduce America’s black homicide toll, like America’s homicide toll as a whole, must put a focus on reducing access and exposure to firearms.” Equally important, we most focus on young Black males. That’s not to say we should ignore Black females – we shouldn’t – but 87 percent of Black homicide victims are male. No other group is close. “The homicide rate for black male victims was 30.59 per 100,000. In comparison, the overall rate for male homicide victims was 6.87 per 100,000. For white male homicide victims it was 3.71 per 100,000. The homicide rate for female black victims was 4.36 per 100,000. In comparison, the overall rate for female homicide victims was 1.72 per 100,000. For white female homicide victims it was 1.39 per 100,000,” according to the report. Finally, we must discard the stereotype that most homicides are a result of random violence. As the figures show, 72 percent of Black victims were killed by someone they knew. And just more than half of those deaths began with an argument. With 15 percent of the deaths attributed to gangs, they also cannot be ignored. Teaching Black men to successfully resolve conflict nonviolently has to be a top priority, if we are going to be successful. And this must start early in the life of boys. There are many reasons to be concerned about homicide in Black America. But Bill O’Racist and other right-wing nuts totally miss the point. George E. Black-on-Black Coalescence (Part One) By James Clingman Coalition-building is the best way for Black people to make the kind of progress we need to make in this country, especially when it comes to economic empowerment. Some have posited that Black people are swiftly becoming obsolete. From the agricultural economy to the industrial and mass production economy Black folks, in some cases, had it going on. Many individual Blacks did quite well with jobs and businesses in those areas. As we moved through the technology/information economy and now into the knowledge-based economy, the rules for survival have changed. Are Black people as a group becoming obsolete? Someone said, “All the shoes have been shined and all the cotton has been picked,” which suggests that Black people are no longer needed by white folks, therefore, if we do not change our ways when it comes to business and job development we will indeed become obsolete. Frederick Douglass, Booker T., and Garvey spoke of a time when we would have to consider the question of Black obsolescence if we did not awaken from our deep sleep and refuse to be dependent upon the largess of others for our sustenance. The strength we gain from coalescence will bring about this much-needed change, and one major step is to reach out and connect with other like-minded people of African descent. This should be done on a national and an international level, the closest area being just south of our country—the Caribbean. One of the greatest Africans in modern history was born in Jamaica. Of course, that would be Marcus Mosiah Garvey, who founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA). Look across the Caribbean and you will find other Blacks who knew and followed through on solutions; they took action rather than merely talk about their problems. They stood up against aggression, ignorance, and oppression. They understood and followed through on the value of educating their people, and they subscribed to the lessons their elders left behind. Haitian history shows us strength and refusal to submit to enslavement; it also shows us resolve and a willingness to help others, as in the case of Haitian soldiers going to Savannah, Georgia to fight against the British in the Siege of Savannah on Oct. 9, 1779, during the U.S. Revolutionary War. We also remember the irrepressible Toussaint L’Overture, Jean-Jacques Dessalines, and Henri Christophe, Haitians who led the only successful slave revolt in the western hemisphere.
Many Black people came to the United States from the Caribbean and brought with them the same spirit, the same dedication and drive, and the same resolute character that causes men and women to seek for themselves, as Richard Allen taught back in 1767. Our Caribbean brothers and sisters have come with the determination to do for self, to rely on self, to cooperate with one another, and build an economic system within their own ranks. This article is written in an effort to celebrate our people and establish relationships that will engender cooperation among our people. Marcus Garvey instructed us to do one thing prior to taking on economic empowerment initiatives. He told us to “Organize!” He shared with us the truth about economic empowerment over political empowerment and how we should seek economics first. He said, “The most important area for the exercise of independent effort is economic. After a people have established successfully a firm industrial foundation they naturally turn to politics and society, but not first to society and politics, because the two latter cannot exist without the former.” Lessons from Garvey and others have led a precious few of us to implement strategies that, in fact, will lead to economic empowerment; we need many more. One such effort is the One Million Conscious Black Voters and Contributors (OMCBV&C), which was established on Garvey’s words, “The greatest weapon used against the Black man is disorganization.” The OMCBV&C movement is underway, actively recruiting that critical mass of Black people who will take action rather than merely talk about problems. The One Million will leverage dollars and votes to obtain reciprocity in the marketplace as well as in the public policy arena. It is entrepreneurial in its philosophy regarding ownership and control of income producing assets. The One Million is molded in the very practical notion of using our own resources to help ourselves and our children. We are committed, dedicated, sacrificial in our giving, and unapologetically Black as we pursue our ultimate goals of economic and political strength—in that order. Black people, no matter where we were born or where we live, must appreciate the fact that we started out in the same place and our differences emanate from our experiences in the nations where our ships docked in the western hemisphere.

EDUCATION & COMMUNITY NEWS Black Parents Say ‘Make UC an Option’ for African Americans By Brenda Payton From New America Media OAKLAND, Calif. -- The cost of a University of California education, feeling welcomed on campus and whether academic records are strong enough. These were among the concerns raised by a group of 16 African American parents educators, counselors, community college students - in a candid conversation with UC President Janet Napolitano. The recent two-hour exchange at Youth UpRising in East Oakland came at the request of the UC head, who has expressed concern over the relatively low numbers of African American students enrolled in the 10 campus UC system. Youth Uprising CEO Olis Simmons cochaired the exchange and invited the participants. “Since I took the job in September 2013, I’ve asked how we can make the University of California more representative of the students who graduate from high schools in California,” Napolitano told the group. “What are the real or perceived barriers to expanding enrollment?” African Americans accounted for 4.7 percent of admitted freshman in 2016, according to admissions data released by the University - slightly higher than 2014 but a dramatic drop since the passage of Prop 209 which barred the use of race in university admissions. Meanwhile, admissions for underrepresented minorities are up across the board, with Latinos making up 32 percent of the total. “The primary concerns I hear are how will they finance their
education, how can we demystify the application process and will there be a multicultural community to embrace them,” said UC Berkeley alum Judge Trina Thompson. Thompson, who mentors high school students, related how her own daughter was told by a high school counselor it would be a reach to get into the UC given the enrollment numbers for African American students. Nedra Ginwright, who provides leadership development for urban youth and is the mother of a freshman at UCLA, pointed out that despite financial aid offerings middle class families often fall through the cracks. She said her family had to take additional work to cover her son’s college expenses. Parents also said the process of transferring from a community college is arduous. In her response, Napolitano said a UC education is still about half the cost of a private school and that those whose families have an income of $80,000 or less attend tuition free. She also said more than half of UC students graduate with no
debt, if they complete school in four years. She did concede, however, the UC needs to do more individualized work with families to help them navigate the financial challenges. But there was a more general and intangible concern that was a recurring theme of the evening. Would African American students feel welcome and supported on campuses with so few students like them? “I had the perception that (my son’s) admission was an unattainable dream,” Ginwright said. “And I still have the sense, is he really supposed to be there?” Natalie Figueroa said when she took her oldest child, a senior at Oakland Tech, on a tour of the UC Berkeley campus, an African American student approached them. “She said she could give us the lowdown about what it’s really like and it would’t be pretty. That raised concerns,” Figueroa said. “We saw Akintunde Ahmad, the Oakland Tech senior who had a 5-point grade average and was all over the national news, he was
rejected by UC. He went to Yale,” said Andrea Phillips, a counselor at the Contra Costa Community College District and a UC Berkeley graduate. In spite of their concerns, participants made it clear they value the UC system and want to do what they can to make it more attractive and accessible to African American students. “I want students to have the option of UC. It was so great for me,” said Millicent Cox, a UCLA graduate. “It didn’t seem out of reach or unaffordable.” Another parent said people would not hesitate to represent the UC system in a positive light if the admission process and student experiences reflected their goals. “We all think it’s a great treasure and resource,” she said. Macheo Payne, an educator and UC Berkeley alum, emphasized the importance of staff and faculty who support African American students. He said Jessica Brown, in the admissions office when he attended, was called the Harriet Tubman of UC because she brought so many African-American students in. “If you don’t have the African American staff to receive them and make them feel warm and welcome, then it doesn’t matter if they enroll, they won’t stay,” he said. Jeanne Wilson, the dean of special programs and services at Chabot College, said while African American students make up just 10 percent of the student population there, they congregate around the offices of three African American
counselors. “The counselors make a hub, a place where black students see other black students,” Wilson said. Several participants urged Napolitano to ask African American students about their experiences and to ask those who were admitted but declined to attend what influenced their decision. The group offered numerous suggestions for ways to attract more African American students. Invite them to apply. Invite Black Student Unions from high schools to attend a youth empowerment weekend. Increase dialogue with community college administrators. Start talking to students when they are in middle and elementary school. Make more use of African American graduates to recruit new students. Brianna Rogers, a re-entry student with plans to transfer from Berkeley City College to UC Berkeley, recommended professional development for staff and faculty. “Bring the professors into 2016,” she said. “Have them use more diverse literature.” “I always say a meeting is not a result,” Napolitano said as the dinner meeting drew to a close. “This has been an effective exchange of information that can inform change.” For Kimm Blackwell, a counselor at Berkeley City College, change is the operative word. “I see all that the schools have to offer and I want to be a part of changing the experiences to make it better,” said Blackwell. “UC needs to be an option.”

Inactivity is one of the key factors contributing to the nation's high rate of obesity and its related health effects. Research shows 50 to 70 percent of people spend six or more hours a day sitting, and 20 to 35 percent spend four or more hours a day watching TV. This type of inactivity - or 'sitting disease' - can lead to serious health conditions. For example, nearly 35 percent of U.S. adults are obese, and obesity-related conditions including heart disease, stroke, Type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer are among the leading causes of preventable death. The estimated annual medical cost of obesity in the U.S. is $147 billion.
Annual medical spending on an obese patient is estimated to be $1,429 higher than it is for a person of normal weight, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). While those figures are discouraging, there is one easy solution that could have a profound impact. Walking is one of the simplest, least expensive and most effective ways individuals can improve their health. It does not require any special skills, expensive equipment or a gym membership. Below are six easy ways to incorporate more walking into your day: 1. Take a walk with a coworker at lunchtime or schedule a walking meeting.

While at work this week a colleague brought in donuts for the office and placed a sign above the infamous pink pastry box reading 'Free Donuts.' The purpose for the sign was to encourage workers to grab one and enjoy the free sweets. From morning to time to go home, there were workers over and over again making the general statement that they know it is something they are not supposed to eat, but they cannot resist. Even pre-diabetics took part in the free donut opportunity, which reinforces the notion that sweet for many is irresistible. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have worked hard to make it as clear as possible that consuming processed sugar directly causes heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and many other diseases that include overweight through morbid obesity. The extensive processing necessary to make refined sugar manufactures it to such a level that it can be classified as a toxic substance. It is an inflammatory to the body's digestive system, where some of us are at a much higher risk of developing heart disease than others. The CDC has formally published that at least 200,000 Americans die each year from heart disease and stroke, a considerable number being preventable. More than half of preventable heart disease and stroke deaths happen to people less than 65 years of age, and black people are nearly twice as likely as whites to die from preventable heart disease and stroke. Nearly 1 in 3 deaths each year in the United States stems from heart disease and stroke, where simply by eliminating tobacco smoking, alcohol, and processed sugary items such as multiple sodas that this statistic will unquestionably drop dramatically. It's Your Medical Record: Make Sure It's Always About You (BPT) - There's only one you. But sometimes your name or some of your personal information is so similar to someone else's that doctors' offices or hospitals can have a hard time identifying your records correctly. It's a dangerous and costly problem that can lead to missed diagnoses, inappropriate treatments or unnecessary tests, as well as making it difficult for your doctor to share information with your other health care providers. A solution? A patient identifier that makes sure your unique health records accurately represent you. That's why the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), the national organization of health information management professionals, has started an online petition asking for a voluntary patient safety identifier. A voluntary patient safety identifier is something you could create and would allow medical systems to recognize you quickly and accu-
rately when accessing your information. It will help ensure all your health information is kept together and is complete, all the while remaining under your control. The petition will encourage our leaders in the federal government to engage with experts in the private sector who have experience in accurately identifying people, as they do in banking and other financial businesses, along with security experts. With 80 percent of doctors and 97 percent of hospitals currently using an electronic health record, having a way to accurately and safely exchange information can make health care more safe and effective. "The voluntary patient safety identifier - created and controlled by patients - will be a complete and positive gamechanger in health care in terms of patient safety, quality of care and financial consequences," says AHIMA CEO Lynne Thomas Gordon, MBA, RHIA, CAE, FACHE, FAHI-
MA. "We encourage patients, health care professionals and the public to think about patient safety and sign our online petition. We want to make health care safer, more efficient and more effective for everyone." The challenge of accurate patient identification is illustrated by a study conducted by the Harris County Hospital District in Houston, which found that, among 3.5 million patients, there were nearly 70,000 instances where two or more patients shared the same last name, first name and date of birth. Among these were 2,488 different patients named Maria Garcia and 231 of those shared the same birth date. That's why people from across the country are supporting a petition that asks the Obama administration to join with the private sector to discuss a voluntary patient safety identifier. My second choice was Sojourner Truth,” Winfrey told The Associated Press Wednesday on the red carpet for her new series, “Greenleaf.” Like Tubman,
Truth also was an abolitionist during the 19th century. “I’m not going to cry here for AP, but I think that’s the best choice. That is the choice for America,” Winfrey said. Tubman, an antislavery activist will be the first African-American to appear on an American banknote and the first woman to appear on one in a century. Her portrait will replace former President Andrew Jackson, who will be moved to the back of the redesigned $20 bill. Born a slave, Tubman went on to lead the Underground Railroad, a secret network of safe houses where slaves were helped to escape to free states. “Now people that didn’t even know who she was are going to know who she is,” Winfrey said. Winfrey sees Tubman’s presence on the bill as historically significant, but also realizes it may carry less impact in a decade or so. “I

Me and mom just watched his movie, ‘Purple Rain’ last week.” Monica Griffith who raised her young daughters, Thea Monyee and Tara during the early 90s said “I always knew that he [Prince] was before his time.” Prince had that mesmerizing affect on people.
