Hello Everyone, Praise be to God for another day. We are blessed to be here one more day. When you hear day after day of more and more of our young and old people dying at the hand of those who are supposed to protect and serve, you have to thank God because it by his grace and mercy that we are here and not a casualty of angry law enforcers or others who desire to take their brokenness out on others. I pray that we continue to trust that through all that we are hearing and seeing that we will not get weary but that we shall continue the good fight of faith and press on toward the mark of the higher calling that God has for us. We are to give our selves away to others and thereby received the blessing that God has in store for us. God is an awesome god and he is able to keep us even in times like these. His word will never return void so we must stay in His Word day and night, night and day. We must get equipped for what is to come. We have been promised that trials and tribulation will come but we are to keeping on trusting God.

Blackonomics: Who Can We Turn to Politically? By James Clingman “Who can I turn to, when nobody needs me? My heart wants to know, and so I must go where destiny leads me.” Listening to an old album by the Temptations, “In a Mellow Mood,” made me think about the political trick-bag Black folks are in now that Barack is on his way out and the focus is on 2016 presidential candidates. I thought about how Black folks are nowhere in the political conversation, neither on the Democratic nor Republican side. Based on the last mid-term election, after which pundits said the emphasis must now be placed on White men and Hispanic voters, Blacks find ourselves on the outside looking in, asking, “Who can I turn to?” Politically, Black voters are obsolete – no longer needed, and in some cases, no longer even wanted. Who can we turn to, now that’s over? Terms such as the “middle class,” “minorities,” “LGBT,” and other nebulous classifications do not identify a group of people who have been in this nation since it began, and do not address our needs or our deserved compensation, in some form or another, for the labor and wealth that we generated. Oh, we are good little boys and girls when it comes carrying the water for the Democrats for the past 80 years or so. We are so docile and compliant as we traipse to the polls every four years to choose from the two persons put in front of us by the real powers in this country. It’s nearly always a case of voting for the lesser of two evils — and sometimes the evil of two lessers. But we continue to rely on a corrupt political system to do right by us. We are so good at crying in front of statues and on bridges and at gravesites. We are great at listening to rousing speeches that cause us to feel good but never make us go out and “do good” for ourselves. We are so captivated by many of those for whom we vote, and we really believe they will work for us when they get to Washington, rather than work for themselves. Our naiveté is off the charts when it comes to politics, which is now causing us to ask: “Who can we turn to?” What is our “destiny,” as the words of that song imply? Where is destiny leading us now? Well, here is what Martin Delany said in his book, The Political destiny of the Col-

ored race on the American Continent, “No people can be free who themselves do not constitute an essential part of the ruling element of the country in which they live. The liberty of no man is secure who controls not his own destiny. For people to be free they must necessarily be their own rulers.” Will we follow Delany’s lesson or will we continue to be swayed by U.S. Rep. John Lewis, who says the vote is “sacred” and is the “most powerful” weapon in a democratic society. Will we follow the likes of the “Five M’s” – Marcus, Medgar, Malcolm, Martin, and Maynard – or will we continue to slobber over many of today’s politicians who have overstayed their time in office and who have not nor will do anything that specifically benefits Black people? Abraham Maslow said, “If a hammer is the only tool you have, every problem in front of you will look like a nail.” As the new political season gets underway, I reiterate that although we have a trillion other tools, called dollars, the only tool we have relied upon has been the vote. Thus, we now face a political climate that has absolutely no concern for the Black electorate because they already know what we are going to do – and not do. Hillary is the likely choice for Blacks now, even though she will not commit to issues that directly benefit Black people, just as the ones on the Republican side will not. Unless we organize a critical mass of Black people willing to be politically independent, vote (or refuse to vote) as a bloc, and leverage our dollars against a political system that has no regard for us, we are doomed as a concern in public policy. Another song on that Temps’ album, our political swansong, says, “What now my love, now that you’ve left me? How can I live through another day? Watching my dreams turn into ashes, and my hopes into bits of clay. Once I could see, once I could feel, now I am numb, I’ve become unreal. What now my love, now that it’s over? I feel the world closing in on me. No one would care, no one would cry if I should live or if I should die.” Better yet, why don’t we all join in a chorus of “What kind of fool am I”? Jim Clingman, founder of the Greater Cincinnati African American Chamber of Commerce, is the nation’s most prolific writer on economic empowerment for Black people. He can be reached through his website, Blackonomics.com.

Beyond the Rhetoric: In Defense of ALEC By Harry C. Alford NNPA Columnist We all know of the recent horror of a North Charleston, S.C. police officer deciding to murder an unarmed Black citizen by firing eight rounds at his back as he tried to flee and then tried to cover it up. There was a consensus across America that this was a senseless and terrible act. As we mourn the death of 50-year-old Walter Scott, a father of five children, there appears to be an attempt by the liberal left to take political advantage of this tragedy. MSNBC television news invited the Congressman James Clyburn (D-S.C.) to comment about the matter. What he said was absolutely shocking. He claimed that this murder happened because organizations like the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) caused this. That they set up the atmosphere for this to happen with vicious laws like the Stand Your Ground legislation. This was totally incorrect and it became obvious that he had been prepped with talking points that were misleading and total propaganda. He took the bait even as he had trouble stating the name of the organization. What we had here was a technique coming out of the liberal left to deceive the general populace into believing that there is an evil empire, known as conservatives, that will murder Black men, hurt Black society in general. The main “whipping boy” has become ALEC. When Republican Indiana Gov. Mike Pence signed a bill promoting religious civil rights, the leftists claimed this was anti-gay and began massive protests (on streets, written and televised media). In the end, they claimed it to be the fault of ALEC. Why is this technique happening all of a sudden? ALEC, a partner organization of the National Black Chamber of Commerce, has a mission that is solid and pro-Americana. It is effective as state legislatures around the nation are becoming more and more pro-business and conservative in their legislative product. ALEC’s success is putting fear into the liberal left and they have begun creating “boogey men”. It reminds me of the unsuccessful Environmental Racism movement during the Clinton Administrations that ended in a big dud. It was a lie and in the end the world realized it was a lie. ALEC is genuine when it claims itself to be: “The nation’s largest nonpartisan, voluntary membership organization of state legislators in the

United States. Members work in a unique, public-private partnership to advance limited government and free market policy. ALEC works on issues of efficiency, effectiveness, accountability and transparency in government to reduce the cost of everyday life and provide real solutions for economic security. ALEC works on economic issues alone, clearly verifiable at ALEC.org and in myriad public statements – and for years has not discussed or acted on any firearms, elections or social-related policy.” I truly believe that the spreading of false and misleading information via the mainstream press and nationally televised news shows is a big disservice to our nation. The hate being leveled at ALEC and other conservative entities is more than immense. I recently read a five page story written by a British publication, UK Progressive, which was one big diatribe of hatred and false accusations of the organization. Can you believe that, a magazine from England stepping up and trying to degrade an American organization whose mission is clear and actually beyond reproach? It gets worse. The liberals have even put up a website which dedicates its entire being to spouting unjustified filth and lies about this mainstream organization. It is hard for me to imagine such a campaign of lies with the intent of forming unjustified hatred on a group of people with a mission that is American as “Apple Pie.” ALEC is a friend of mine and I will debate and go face-to-face with anyone trying to spew such hatred. I and the National Black Chamber of Commerce (NBCC) are prepared to check them for what they are trying to do in such a wicked fashion. I tried to ignore them but when they slip a “game” on Congressman Clyburn, I must draw the line. The NBCC is going to start working more closely with state legislatures. I am writing this article two blocks away from the Illinois State Capitol Building where we are advocating for better government in Illinois. Our Illinois chapters have been very successful in developing a great relationship with the state representatives and senators here. We will emulate this and our partnership with ALEC will remain firm. Great legislation as well as the development of future elected officials with a solid pro-business agenda will be the products of our efforts. We, as well as ALEC, will continue to grow and whoa to the evil minds who try to play evil tricks on the American people. Harry C. Alford is the co-founder, President/CEO of the National Black Chamber of Commerce®. Website: www.nationalbcc.org. Email: halford@nationalbcc.org.

EDUCATION & BUSINESS NEWS Hall & Certified Nursing Assistants Demand Quality Assurance at Skilled Nursing Facilities Los Angeles, CA – Senate Bill (SB) 779 authored by Senator Isadore Hall, III (D-South Bay), and sponsored by SEIU-United Long Term Care Workers (ULTCW), would address understaffing that currently places the lives of nursing home residents at risk. Data from the California Association of Health Facilities (CAHF) indicates that Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNFs) are not meeting the patient-to-staff ratio suggested by Congressional study to maintain the highest practicable physical, mental, and psychosocial well-being of each resident. According to CAHF, the average nurse staffing ratio at SNFs in California is 3.73 hours of care

SEIU-ULTCW President Laphonza Butle, and hundreds of Nursing Home Workers and Community Allies in Support of SB 779. per resident day (hprd), and a congressionally ordered study recommends 4.1 hprd. Such chronic understaffing of positions like Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) creates unsafe, stressful living conditions. “Skilled nursing facilities care for the most important people in the world – our family members

and those we love,” said Senator Isadore Hall. “I have seen firsthand that the current staff-topatient ratio for Certified Nursing Assistants at many skilled nursing facilities is insufficient to ensure the quality of care we expect for our loved ones. The health and safety of patients in a skilled nurs-

ing facility must be a top priority and we must do more to ensure better care for them. I am proud to author SB 779 and to partner with SEIUUnited Long Term Care Workers to improve patient care and modernize staffing at skilled nursing facilities to better meet the healthcare needs of its patients. Our loved ones deserve nothing less.” CNAs are the first responders to the needs of seniors and people with disabilities in SNFs. However, because SNFs are currently understaffed with CNAs, residents are at risk of unnecessary falls, bed sores turning deadly due to not being repositioned as often as needed, and soiled diapers going unchanged. SB 779 would ensure

that SNFs raise the standard of care for residents and their workers by mandating a staff-to-patient ratio that affords healthier, quality care to residents and allows CNAs to successfully do their jobs. “CNAs are doing the best they can to provide the highest quality care patients require, but the current understaffing at nursing home facilities undermines those efforts,” said Laphonza Butler, President of SEIU-ULTCW. “SB 779 would change that by holding all facilities accountable to the patient-staff ratios our parents, grandparents and loved ones with disabilities deserve.” Senator Hall, III will introduce SB 779 in the Senate Health Committee on April 29.

Lou Gossett, Jr. Partners with NAACP LA to “Rekindle the Fire” (Continued from page 1) echoed throughout his speech. His words penetrated the silence that had spread throughout White Hall as he pleaded for the community to wake up and support the youth. “They can't intelligently tell us what they're doing when they're shooting one another, he said. “It’s like a baby sitting in a high chair, with food on the tray and mama's on the phone too long. That food is going to go on the floor.” As he paced around the podium, looking into the faces of mothers and fathers, he said “We're not paying enough attention to these young men and young women, and they're taking matters into their own hands. So, you get what you get.” By the end of his speech, everyone was on their feet. From teens of a Los Angeles youth group to the 90 year old retired business owner listening in the audience, Gossett’s call to action was met by applause. Just before Minnie Hadley-Hempstead, President of NAACP LA, gave her address, musical duo Ebony Coast performed their hit song, Victory. The pair danced across the stage, singing the lyrics, “We will triumph no matter who try us. We cannot fall. They can’t deny us. Together we’re too strong.” After the music had

cleared the air, Hempstead took her place at the podium and gave a speech which laid out a five-point plan for African Americans to succeed. “America is the finest country in the world because of us,” she said. “We were skilled when we got here, and we worked 250 years for free to build this country. So, this is our country.” Her speech addressed issues involving the Los Ange-

les Police Department, but emphasized education and voter registration. “We vote to serve notice,” she said. “We're saying our community is active and involved. So, be careful what you try to do to us, because we're going to be voting in large numbers.” The program also highlighted one of NAACP’s most distinguished youth programs. ACT-SO, short for Af-

rican American Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics, is a yearlong achievement program designed to help African American high school students excel culturally and academically. Lily Faye Pierre, ACT-SO chairwoman, spoke about the benefits of student participation, and encouraged parents to get their children involved. NAACP LA invited representatives of community

based organizations to speak, as well. Arvis Jones, a counselor with Hathaway Sycamore Child and Family Services, discussed the effects of trauma and grief within the African American community. “In doing mental health work with children, I found that our children are being left behind,” she said. “I know you see these people with their pants sagging and you think they're up to no good, but I've worked with kids on parole who have killed. And when you get to them all you have is a regular child,” she said. “They just need someone to care.” The program concluded with final words from Mrs. Mary Louise Batiste, Membership Committee Chair. “We went to Mr. Gossett and told him about Rekindle the Fire,” said Batiste. “He gave it to us, today. This is what we want. This is what we're fighting for. But it doesn't stop here.” On Wednesday, April 29, 2015, a breakfast meeting will be held for local pastors and civic leaders. At that time, the Rev. Kelvin Sauls, Sr. Pastor of Holman United Methodist church, will lead a discussion to help clergy “Rekindle the fire,” within their communities. Residents can expect to see more outreach programs from NAACP LA, throughout the year.

Former California Agent Charged With Scamming Elderly Church Members LOS ANGELES— Constance Gail Fortune, 61, was arraigned in Los Angeles Superior Court in California and charged with three felony counts of grand theft and one felony count of financial elder abuse for allegedly scamming seniors, many of whom were members of First AME Church, out of more than $100,000. agent at the time, sold homeowners, auto and life insurance policies to numerous consumers, but never actually purchased policies and stole their premiums. Fortune’s alleged illegal activities occurred over a two-year period and left consumers with no coverage and at considerable financial risk, according to investigators. Fortune, an employee, trustee and former spokesperson for First AME Church, allegedly hosted meetings and met with fellow church members and others to mar-

insurance products. She fabricated bogus insurance documents on official insurance company letterhead in an effort to give consumers the appearance that the policies were legitimate, and then Fortune used consumers’ premiums to pay for her personal expenses, including lease payments for her insurance office and rent for her apartment, according to investigators. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office Elder Abuse Unit is prosecuting the case. This case is being investigated and prosecuted under the Life and Annuity Consumer Protection Program. LACPP provides grant funds to counties for the prosecution of financial abuse in life insurance and annuity product transactions. Fortune was arrested on April 8 and was arraigned at the Superior Court of Los Angeles on Aril 10. Her court date is set for May 4, and will not be released on bail at this time. Fortune faces up to five years in state prison if convicted.

HEALTH & COMMUNITY NEWS Vaccine Legislation Passes Senate Education Committee on Bipartisan Vote SACRAMENTO – Senate Bill 277, authored by Dr. Richard Pan (D – Sacramento), and Senator Ben Allen (D – Santa Monica) to abolish the personal belief exemption that currently allows parents to opt out of vaccinating their children prior to school enrollment passed the Senate Education Committee on a 7 – 2 vote today. Dr. Pan and Senator Allen presented amendments that protect every student’s right to be safe at school while preserving every student’s right to an education. “Vaccines are one of our greatest medical advancements and to protect the health of our students and our greater community, this bill is urgently needed to boost vaccination rates,” said Dr. Richard Pan, a State Senator representing Sacramento. “This measure will ensure that students whose parents choose to not vaccinate them have several educational options that don’t put other children at risk of contracting vaccine-preventable diseases.” “Today’s amendments reflect our

commitment to increase everyone’s safety against vaccine-preventable diseases while ensuring every child has a place to learn,” said Senator Ben Allen. A long list of school boards, education groups, local governments, health organizations and parent and child advocacy groups support SB 277. The list includes: the American Academy of Pediatrics, Vaccinate California, California State PTA, California Medical Association, California Immunization Coalition, Health Officers Association of California, the Los Angeles Unified School District, Solano Beach School District, San Francisco Unified School District, the Counties of San Francisco, Los Angeles, Marin, Yolo and Santa Clara. Trusted Munching By Dean L. Jones, CPM Each day, we are increasingly dependent that the foods and beverages chosen to eat present no dangers to our health. Whether the item is packaged or direct from the farm, the idea that we would eat something that would make us severely sick is something we rarely think about. It is the fact that in trust we munch, as belief is the order of the day that food manufacturers deliver products that are fit to be eaten. This is one reason why it was alarming to hear this week that Blue Bell Ice Cream voluntarily recalled all of its products (ice cream, frozen yogurt, sherbet and frozen snacks) because they have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism that causes serious and sometimes fatal infections in those with fragile immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only shortterm symptoms such as high fever, severe headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women. Basically, the more ingredients that goes into a product, the higher the chance that something can go wrong. Particularly those things that contain chemicals like processed sugar, we are consequently subjected to a higher potential of ingestion trouble. For the most part, there are a lot of foodstuff items that include processed sugars, disguised under names like corn syrup, dextrose, fructose, glucose, lactose, maltose, and more are included the usual suspects like soft/sports drinks, candy and baked goods. Those grams of added sugar are really saying that each gram contains four empty calories, which can be stored as fat, and ultimately lead to a number of diseases, such as diabetes, obesity, and heart disease. Due to the public pressure, it came as no surprise when the Kraft Company announced this week that starting in January 2016, it will remove artificial preservatives and synthetic colors

Dean L. Jones from its popular Mac and Cheese recipe. It will use spices like paprika, annatto and turmeric to replace the synthetic colors. Still, the one thing that it is not removing from its ingredients is the 8.6 grams of processed sugars per serving. The Hershey's company has developed an enormous amount of trust from consumers over their long-term business activity selling many munching products. A significant amount of advertising is going into its Hershey's Spreads Chocolate product. One of the glaring things that are not disclosed in their advertisements is the amount of processed sugars per serving (2 tablespoons). Well, Hershey's Spreads Chocolate is 19-grams of sugar per serving (just shy of 5 teaspoons of sugar); likewise Hershey's Spreads Chocolate with Hazelnut is 20-grams (5 teaspoons); Hershey's Spreads Chocolate with Almond is 21grams (5+ teaspoons); and Reese's Spreads with Peanut Butter Chocolate is 19-grams of processed sugar. Accordingly, beware of the many munching taking place in your life. 277 to protect her 18 month son from vaccine-preventable diseases. “My son and his friends deserve to be protected from preventable disease as school.” Currently, a parent may choose to opt out of school vaccine requirements that bi-partisan legislative majorities passed to protect students. SB 277 will remove that option, so that only a medical exemption would remain. SB 277 will not remove a parent’s choice to vaccinate his or her child. When a contagion spreads in a community with immunization rates below 90 percent, the protec-

tion provided by ‘'herd immunity’ can be at risk. This means many people are at risk of becoming infected including people who cannot be immunized, including infants, chemotherapy patients and those with HIV or other conditions. The hesitation to vaccinate on the part of a growing number of parents stems from misinformation such as the now retracted 1998 study that falsified data to purport a link between autism and the measles vaccine. The study was authored by Andrew Wakefield who was later found to be lying.

POLITICAL NEWS Senate Confirms Loretta Lynch as Attorney General By Lindsay Dunsmuir and Richard Cowan (Reuters) - Loretta Lynch won Senate approval as U.S. attorney general on Thursday, becoming the first black woman to occupy the post at a time when deadly altercations between white police and unarmed black men are making headlines. The Senate confirmed Lynch by a vote of 56-43 to end a five-month partisan deadlock over her nomination by President Barack Obama. She had waited for a vote longer than the last seven attorneys general combined. Obama said Lynch, the 55-year-old U.S. attorney for Brooklyn, New York, had credibility with both law enforcement and the communities they police. He told supporters from his Organizing for Action political group that he would work with her to rebuild trust so that everyone felt safe and that the law was working on everyone's behalf. Taking over the Justice Department from Attorney General Eric Holder, Lynch also will face early tests on financial cases alleging some of the world's largest banks helped clients evade U.S. taxes and manipulated currency markets. She is expected to start work on Monday. Ten Republicans voted for Lynch, including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. The tally in Lynch's favor was larger than expected, perhaps reflecting political concerns. Of

the Republicans who backed her, four are up for reelection next year, three of them from states with big cities that have large African-American populations. As attorney general she will likely be confronted with civil rights cases stemming from police altercations in several U.S. cities. On Tuesday, the Justice Department said it was gathering information to determine whether it can bring civil rights charges in the death of a man who died after being arrested by Baltimore police. Freddie Gray, a 27-year -old black man, was arrested by white officers on April 12 and died days later after slipping into a coma. A preliminary autopsy report said he died from a spinal injury. IMMIGRATION AN ISSUE The voting margin in the Senate reflected many Republicans' disapproval of Lynch's support for an executive order issued by Obama in November that was meant to shield millions of undocumented immigrants from the threat of deportation. Before the vote, Alabama Republican Senator Jeff Sessions, an outspoken critic of Obama's executive action on immigration, blasted Lynch. "We do not have to confirm someone to the highest law enforcement position in America if that someone is publicly committed to denigrating Congress, violating law," he said. Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid berated Republicans for delaying the confirma-

Loretta Lynch tion and said Lynch was "as qualified a candidate" as he had seen in almost 30 years in the Senate. Lynch's elderly father, Lorenzo, a retired Baptist minister from North Carolina, watched the vote from a visitors' gallery

in the Senate chamber. Lynch had awaited confirmation since November when Obama, a fellow Harvard Law School graduate, nominated her. Despite the delay, she was widely seen as less controversial than Holder, who often

clashed with Republicans. She has said she aims to smooth relations with Congress. Her nomination was backed by the Senate's Judiciary Committee by a vote of 12-8 on Feb. 26. But her confirmation languished over an impasse in the Republican-led Senate on an unrelated bill meant to protect human trafficking victims. Democrats had balked at an anti-abortion provision included in that bill, but that dispute was settled on Tuesday and the bill was approved on Wednesday. An accomplished career prosecutor, Lynch has twice served as U.S. attorney in Brooklyn, most recently since 2010. Her office there handled more terrorism prosecutions than most other offices in the United States. For two years, she also led a committee that advised the attorney general on policy. At a Senate confirmation hearing on Jan. 28, Lynch said her top priorities would include fighting terrorist threats and cyber crime, and improving relations between law enforcement and minority communities. NATIONAL/STATE & REGIONAL NEWS Email: Affleck Asked PBS to Not Reveal Slave-Owning Ancestor BOSTON (AP) — Ben Affleck requested that the PBS documentary series “Finding Your Roots” not reveal he had a slave-owning ancestor, according to emails published online by whistle blower site WikiLeaks, and the information never appeared on the program. PBS and Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates, host of the show that traces the ancestry of well-known guests, said in separate statements that they didn’t censor the slaveowner details. Instead, more interesting ancestors of the actor emerged and Gates chose to highlight them in October’s segment featuring Affleck, they said in the statements posted on the PBS website. “For any guest, we always find far more stories about ancestors on their family trees than we ever possibly could use,” Gates said in an

emailed statement to The Associated Press. He said finding slave-owning ancestors was very common in the series, and noted Ken Burns and Anderson Cooper were two guests with slave-owner relatives. In Affleck’s case, “we decided to go with the story we used about his fascinating ancestor who became on occultist following the Civil War. This guy’s story was totally unusual: we had never discovered someone like him before,” he said. Affleck’s rep did not immediately respond to an email request for comment Saturday. The award-winning actor and filmmaker (“Good Will Hunting” and “Argo”) has also organized humanitarian work in Africa. The email chain between Gates and Sony Pictures co-chairman and chief executive Michael Lynton was part of a trove of hundreds of thou-

West Basin Completes Drought-Tolerant Garden at Culver City High School CULVER CITY, Calif. —On the heels of Governor Jerry Brown’s Executive Order announcing statewide mandatory water restrictions, students at Culver City High School demonstrated that they are doing their part to conserve water during one of California’s most historic droughts to date. Students joined West Basin Municipal Water District (West Basin) Director Scott A. Houston, Culver City Mayor Meghan Sahli-Wells, Culver City Unified School District Board Member Laura Chardiet and community partners to unveil a new Ocean Friendly Garden (OFG) on campus during a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Monday, April 20. Located at the Robert Frost Auditorium, this 2,332-square-foot sustainable garden features several swales that capture large volumes of rainwater from the roof, reducing runoff to the ocean and conserving up to 80% of the water that would have been used to water the old landscape. Drought-tolerant plants were installed by students themselves during a hands-on workshop held in December 2014. “As we are experiencing our fourth straight year of drought, it is important now more than ever that we all take the necessary steps to conserve our precious water,” said Scott A. Houston, West Basin director, who represents the city of Culver City. “These gardens provide great examples on how to eliminate all or part of your lawns and save up to 80% of our drinking water used in and around our home.” The OFG program is part of West Basin’s Water Reliability 2020 program, which aims to reduce dependence on imported water to only 33% by 2020 through doubling water recycling, doubling conservation efforts and adding ocean-water desalination to a local, diverse water supply. Programs such as the OFG allow West Basin to work toward its water efficiency goals by reducing the amount of water used outdoors, which is the leading waste of drinking water in residential communities. “This garden teaches us that we all need to change the way we think about water use,” said Meghan Sahli-Wells, mayor of Culver City. “We are grateful for our program partners who helped build such a beautiful, water-saving demonstra-

Program partners joining West Basin for this Ocean Friendly Garden include Golden State Water Company, Department of Water Resources, Culver City High School, Culver City Unified School District, City of Culver City, Surfrider Foundation, Green Gardens Group and Stout Design Build. change, Gates asks Lynton for advice on how to handle Affleck’s request. “Here’s my dilemma: confidentially, for the first time, one of our guests has asked us to edit out something about one of his ancestors–the fact that he owned slaves. Now, four or five of our guests this season descend from slave owners, including Ken Burns. We’ve never had anyone ever try to censor or edit what we found. He’s a megastar. What do we do?” Gates wrote on July 22, 2014. Lynton replies that it all depends on who knows that the information was in the documentary already. “I would take it out if no one knows, but if it gets out

that you are editing the material based on this kind of sensitivity then it gets tricky. Again, all things being equal I would definitely take it out,” Lynton wrote that same day. After going back and forth, the two seem to decide censoring the information is a bad idea, with Gates writing later on July 22 that if the public learned of it, “It would embarrass him and compromise our integrity. I think he is getting very bad advice” and adding: “Once we open the door to censorship, we lose control of the brand.” Affleck is never mentioned in the exchange of emails between Gates and Lynton; instead he’s referred to as a “megastar” and “Batman.” He was filming “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice” in Detroit at the time. When the segment aired Oct. 14, Gates focused on the occultist, a Revolutionary War relative and Affleck’s mother, who was a “freedom rider” in 1964. A PBS spokeswoman said in an emailed statement Saturday that PBS did not know of the exchanges between Gates, Sony and Affleck and wasn’t part of editorial decisions made by Gates and his producers. “It is clear from the exchange how seriously Professor Gates takes editorial integrity,” PBS said in the statement posted on its website.
