Hello Everyone, You are invited to come out to Park Windsor Baptist Church for the Choir Musical at 4pm. It will be wonderful to see you while we lift the name of Jesus up in song, praise and thanksgiving. Bernetta Major Thomas and a host of choir directors will be in attendance as they let the Lord use them for His glory. We have been in workshop starting Thursday in preparation for the grand finale on Sunday at the musical. As we prepare for the Sunday musical, let us not forget to pray for the families of those two journalist who were shot and killed this week. Also pray for the killer’s family as well. They are also grieving the lost of a love one and only God know the grief they are caring and bearing. We must stay prayed up to deal with the trying times in our communities today. We must know in whom we believe so that we do not get weary in doing well. We have the one and only one who can give us the peace that passes all understanding.

Occasionally in American politics an issue comes down the pike that brings diverse communities together. Recent actions by the IRS and in Congress have done just that when the IRS sent letters to large donors and to some charitable organizations saying that they may start taxing these donations as gifts instead of as a charitable contribution. This year the US House of Representatives acted to ensure that this will not happen. Congressman Peter Roskam’s bill HR 1104, which clarifies that the Gift Tax does not apply to all nonprofit organizations, and would correct this error. I would like to thank the Republican Leadership, led by Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy and Congressman John Lewis, a Civil Rights icon, for getting this vital piece of legislation through the House. I would also like to urge both of California’s Senators Barbara Boxer and Diane Feinstein to do everything they can to get the Senate companion bill passed. Their support is necessary
to ensure that we are free to support the charities of our choice in whatever capacity citizens deem appropriate. This bill would ensure that donations to all organizations are treated equally. As the law is currently written, the IRS has the ability to decide which organizations are subject to the tax. It’s time to clarify once and for all what is a gift and what is a charitable donation. HR 1104 is supported by organizations as diverse as Americans for Prosperity to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. It received an almost two thirds, bipartisan vote in the US House. Few issues in politics today have this type of broad support. We hope that Senators Boxer and Feinstein and the rest of the US Senate can complete this bill by passing it in the Senate. It is gratifying to see that we have politicians in Washington, DC who sincerely work on issues like this to ensure that ALL donations to ALL organizations are treated equally. Thank you. Blackonomics: Are You Having Fun with Today’s Politics? By James Clingman NNPA Columnist “I’ll see your two Blacks and raise you two more.” The vast majority of the news is centered on politics, specifically, the 2016 presidential race, which is 14 months away. Black people are being sucked under by a whirlpool of nonsense on TV news outlets, newspaper and magazine commentaries, lectures, and even some protests. Candidates are already going across the nation giving speeches, and the first presidential debate by the red-tie and blue -tie gangs, has already been conducted. Hmmm. (When these politicians are on TV, they always wear red or blue ties; and we are divided by red and blue states. The Crips and Bloods must be proud.) Talking heads on news shows are so giddy about the political possibilities, and it is obvious that they see the upcoming election as simply “fun,” as one commentator said. Is it fun for Black people? Are you having fun yet? I doubt it. You’re too busy trying to make ends meet, that is, if you even have any ends in the first place. Folks are making millions of dollars on the political hype, hysteria, and histrionics, while most Black folks are falling deeper into the abyss of economic despair and desperation. Just think about it: all the cable news shows are replete with political clap-trap – morning, noon, and night. They never highlight economic solutions for Black people, never feature conscious Black people as guests on a regular basis, and never move beyond the mundane discussions and point-counterpoint arguing that takes place between and among so-called experts and intellectuals. Of course, no problems get solved in that process. Here’s the caveat for Black people: As I warned in 2007, watch out! The “okey-doke” is afoot. While political discourse is dominating the news, real issues that connect to Black economic growth and power are given very short shrift. Each news channel has its own Black faces, none of whom is able to go “off the plantation,” to speak directly to the important issues relevant to Black people. They consume hours of air time doing their best imitation of Pavlov’s dog, salivating over their preferred candidate and offering milquetoast assessments to Black issues, mainly through a political lens, as if that will solve our problems. I have a strong stomach, so I can watch some of their political chitchat. Black Lives Matter (BLM) is certainly disrupting the political business-as-usual process these days, but they are waiting for the candidates to give them a plan through
which Black lives will indeed matter. The candidates give them scripted rhetoric, but no specific public commitment regarding real change. Asking politicians to do the right thing will only keep us waiting for another 50 years; we must demand what we want, very specifically, and get a oral and written commitment from them before we give them our votes. Politicians are many things, but one thing most of them are not is stupid. They will say whatever makes us feel good; they will dodge our issues or simply ignore us; or they will do what Hillary did when the brother in BLM “asked” what she would do to help. She turned the question back on him, saying, “You tell me what you want.” Presently, politicians control the game. We must start and control our own game. They have no reason to deal with our issues vis-à-vis police brutality and other inequities because there is no price for them to pay for not supporting us. Where is their indignation about what happened to Sandra Bland and more recently Charnesia Corley, who was humiliated by police officers who forced a cavity search on her in a gas station parking lot in Harris County, Texas, in plain sight of passers-by? All Black people are hearing is the same political rhetoric that we hear each election cycle. But whose fault is that? Most politicians only value Black folks when it’s time to vote. Ann Coulter said, “Our Blacks are so much better than their Blacks,” in her defense and support of Herman Cain. We are just pawns on their chessboard, chips in a high stakes poker game. The solution is grounded in economics, the same weapon other groups use to gain political concessions. I recently posed two questions to a Black Republican who recruits Black voters: What will Black folks get if we all vote for the Republican candidate? What will Black folks lose if we do not vote at all? He could not answer those questions. The same questions apply to the Democrats, but more importantly they apply to us. More specifically, we must stop “asking” and start demanding – with the collective power to reward and punish. We can win this fight; we simply have to use the right weapon. You cannot properly defend yourself in a gunfight if your weapon of choice is a switchblade. EDUCATION & COMMUNITY NEWS Minecraft Fueling Creative Ideas, Analytical Thinking in K-12 Classrooms By Benjamin Herold One of the world's most popular video games has made significant inroads into K-12 classrooms, opening new doors for teaching everything from city planning to 1st graders to physics for high schoolers. The game, of course, is Minecraft, a 21st-century version of Legos in which players use simple 3-D digital blocks to build and explore almost anything they can imagine. "It's no longer a farfetched idea that Minecraft could be useful for teaching and learning," said Joel Levin, the co-founder of TeacherGaming LLC, a 4-year-old company based in Tampere, Finland, that has sold MinecraftEdu, its customized classroom version of the game, to more than 6,500 schools, libraries, and museums. "The conversation has shifted to taking a closer look at the types of experiences that are possible." While the game's power to engage children has made it a compelling draw inside schools, there have been hurdles to its growth. Three-quarters of teachers now report using digital games in their classrooms, but many remain uncomfortable with integrating open-ended games such as Minecraft into instruction. Minecraft is also not free. And the game's surging popularity—a Warner Bros. movie is currently in development, and legions of children spend time watching YouTube videos of other people playing the game—has led to some concern that Minecraft's creative elements are slowly being

Still, Levin said, the game is providing a growing number of teachers and students with opportunities to make profound connections. "It's a powerful moment when you take something kids love and are passionate about, and you bring it into the school day, and you say, 'Show me what you can do with it,' " he said. Millions of Players Released in 2009, the commercial version of Minecraft is a virtual sandbox, with no set narrative or goal. Players are given tools and opportunities to build, create, destroy, and interact with each other. (In Minecraft's "survival" mode, which is separate from its "creative" mode, players must find food and avoid animals and monsters that are trying to eat them.)
In March 2014, the computing and software giant Microsoft Corp. bought the game's creator, Swedish developer Mojang, for $2.5 billion. If that seems like a lot of money, consider: A June 2015 report by international gamingresearch and -analytics firm Newzoo tagged Minecraft as the second-most-played computer game in the Western world. Newzoo estimated last fall that in North America and Western Europe alone, 36 million people play Minecraft. The experience of Sara Richards, an instructional technology specialist at Laurel Mountain Elementary in Texas' Round Rock school district, offers a window into how the game has gained a foothold in schools in the United States. Richards, a self-described techie and gamer, was introduced to Minecraft by one of her stu-
dents in 2011. She quickly saw the game's educational potential, but was unsure how to proceed. "All the kids played it at home, but they like killing monsters and putting armor on their guys and throwing potions on people to turn them invisible," Richards said. "None of that fit with the lessons [Laurel Mountain] teachers were teaching." So, during the 2013-14 school year, Richards started an afterschool tech club that included heavy doses of Minecraft play. Club members figured out appropriate ways to use the game in school. They collectively chose their goal (building a medieval village) and worked together to set ground rules (no flooding someone else's Minecraft house with digital lava). As part of an historic preservation unit for 4th graders at Hulstrom Elementary School, in Colorado, students researched prominent architectural sites in the state and built replicas in Minecraft. The experience was a hit. Laurel Mountain's principal and the district's administration— which had previously blocked student access to Minecraft, because too many children were trying to play the game during classes—approved Richards' proposal to buy a MinecraftEdu package for the school. For less than $400, the school received enough game licenses to outfit a computer lab. MinecraftEdu now also offers access to cloud-based classroom servers, which allows teachers to limit access to the game to their students. The first Minecraft classroom
lesson at the school took place with 3rd graders who had just learned about perimeter, volume, and area in their math class. After a brief demonstration, the students set about building Minecraft houses with floors (for which they had to calculate the area), multiple stories (to calculate volume), and fences (to calculate their property's perimeter). When the students were done, they created a Minecraft sign, complete with the results of their calculations, to hang in front of their houses. The lure of the game was powerful motivation for some students who might otherwise have been uninterested in the math content, Richards said. "But the part that surprised me was how well [Minecraft] lent itself to differentiation," she concluded. "The kids who totally got the concepts were able to build these elaborate structures and challenge themselves to find the area and perimeter and volume of something more complicated. The kids who were unsure of themselves could build something smaller." Complex Creations Richards has since expanded Laurel Mountain's use of the game to include eight classrooms and hundreds of students, including 1st graders who built an entire Minecraft city as part of a lesson on city planning last school year. The game's growing popularity inside schools nationally can also be seen at events such as the annual conference of the International Society for Technology in Education. Michael was packing up his backpack at school to go home. "Don’t forget to study for the math test tomorrow,” the teacher said. "Oh no." Michael said. Michael had forgotten about the test. Michael went home to study. He studied for more than two hours and he did the most important part he prayed, "dear God please let me pass this math test tomorrow." Then Michael went to bed. The next morning he got up and prayed again "Dear God please let me pass the math test today and let me have a good day." He went to school. The next week they passed out the papers, "Yessss!!!!" Michael yelled. Michael had gotten an A-. “God answers prayers,” he thought. He was very happy. The end:}

CHURCH & COMMUNITY NEWS Suicide is Epidemic But Doesn’t Lead to Hell, Americans Say By Lisa Cannon Green NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Most Americans believe they are seeing an epidemic in the United States of people taking their own lives. But most Americans don’t view suicide as a selfish choice, and they don’t believe it sends people to hell, LifeWay Research finds. “Americans are responding with compassion to a tragedy that touches many families,” said Scott McConnell, LifeWay Research vice president. “For example, as researchers learn more about the effects of mental illness, people may be more likely to react to suicide with mercy.” In a phone survey of 1,000 Americans, LifeWay Research found more than a third (36 percent) have had a friend or relative commit suicide, and 56 percent describe suicide as an epidemic in the United States. Concern is highest among the oldest half of the millennial generation, those 25 to 34 years old. This age group is more likely than others to perceive an epidemic of suicide (66 percent), say suicide is selfish (45 percent), and believe those who commit suicide go to hell (27 percent, matching 35- to 44year-olds). Federal data show suicides have been on the rise since 2005. This is not unprecedented; suicide rates were almost as high in the mid-1980s. And globally, the United States isn’t even in the top 50. But among 25- to 34year-olds, suicide is the second leading cause of death. “In a young and generally healthy population, it’s understandable this would be a concern—many millennials will know of friends and acquaintances who have either committed suicide or been impacted by those who have,” said McConnell. Not a path to hell Fewer than a quarter of Americans (23 percent) say people who take their own lives go to hell. More than 6 in 10 Americans say suicide does not lead to hell, and 16 percent are not sure. However, Christians (27 percent)—and particularly evangelicals (32 percent)—are more likely than others to believe suicide leads to damnation. Catholics believe more firmly than Protestants that suicide does not send people to hell, with 63 percent of Catholics and 54 percent of Protestants taking that stance. Protestants (19 percent) are more likely to indicate they don’t know whether people who commit suicide go to hell compared to Catholics (12 percent). “The finality of suicide makes people wonder about its consequences,” said McConnell. “Most churches teach suicide is wrong, but
many also acknowledge God’s mercy and sovereignty.” Fewer than 4 in 10 Americans (36 percent) say people who commit suicide are selfish. The number rises for Christians (39 percent) and particularly for evangelicals (44 percent). LifeWay Research also found differences by race. One-fourth of AfricanAmericans say a friend or family member has committed suicide, compared to 39 percent of whites. African-Americans are more likely than others to believe suicide is selfish (44 percent) and sends people to hell (38 percent). In comparison, 19 percent of whites and 25 percent of Hispanics say people who commit suicide go to hell. Effect of mental illness Americans were disconcerted by last year’s suicide of comedian Robin Williams, McConnell noted. Williams hanged himself in August, about seven weeks before LifeWay Research began its survey. “Experts say mental illness affects 90 percent of people who die by suicide,” McConnell said. “Robin Williams fit that pattern—before he died, he had been seeking treatment for depression.” Suicide and mental illness have been taboo topics in many churches, McConnell said. In previous studies by LifeWay Research, two-thirds of Protestant pastors said they speak to their churches about mental illness once a year or less, and 65 percent of family members of someone with mental illness say churches should do more to talk about mental illness so the topic is not so taboo. In recent years, some have begun speaking out. McConnell said pastor Rick Warren has spoken publicly about the suicide death of his son Matthew, and church leader Frank Page released a book about his daughter Melissa’s suicide.
“For too long, many Christians have viewed mental illness as a character flaw rather than a medical condition,” McConnell said. “It’s encourag-
ing to see the culture begin to change. Open discussion of suicide and mental health in churches can make the differ-

HEALTH & COMMUNITY NEWS U.S. Vaccination Rates High, But Pockets of Unvaccinated Pose Risk By Julie Steenhuysen The vast majority of U.S. kindergarten-age children are vaccinated against preventable diseases but sizable pockets of unprotected children still exist, posing a public health threat, according to a government study. Only 1.7 percent of U.S. parents of kindergartners sought exemptions in 2014 from laws requiring children be vaccinated, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study. Rates vary nationwide, however, with at least one state reporting over 6 percent of parents seeking exemptions, the study released Thursday found. Emotional Swings By Dean L. Jones, CPM Families across our country rarely talk about glucose level (sugar) in the body. It probably should be highlighted a lot more since glucose level or blood sugar concentration, with some exceptions, is the primary source of energy for our body's cells. More basically, the proper glucose level is what the body regulates every second of our life to ensure that we stay in balance (metabolic homeostasis). We should develop at an early age an understanding of just how critical processes of learning and performing at an obtainable optimal intensity result best from being in balance. In view of that, the better our body can transport glucose from our intestines or liver via the bloodstream to the body cells, the healthier our life. Likewise, the sooner we understand how our blood sugar level can affect our mood, temperament, personality, disposition, and even motivation, the easier it becomes to see the importance of suitably selecting what we eat and drink. Usually after someone close in relationship acquires an ailment like diabetes or high blood pressure family members heighten their individual understanding about the glycemic index (GI). After that, families customarily spend time talking about eating certain carbohydrates (carbs) and keeping a good blood-sugar level. Certain foods like white bread raise blood sugar levels and other foods like beans are lower on the GI. Pretty much everyone knows how their respective blood sugar rises immediately after drinking caffeinated coffee. Similarly, black tea, green tea, and energy drinks all have caffeine and consequently cause blood sugar on the GI to swing upward. But, not many of us engage in conversation about how sugar-free foodstuff items will raise blood sugar levels. Surprisingly, these items still have plenty of carbs from starches, plus these items use questionably dangerous sugar

Dean L. Jones alcohols such as sorbitol, xylitol, and aspartame. High-fatty foods can make our blood sugar stay up for extended periods of time. Also, being sick with a bad cold raises blood sugar levels, which is compounded from taking some medicines (pseudoephedrine or phenylephrine), such as antibiotics and the decongestants that affect blood sugar levels. There is no discourse needed to understand how alcoholic drinks raise a person's blood sugar level. Except what needs to be discussed more often centers on how alcohol consumption affects blood sugar levels to drop considerably for as long as 12-hours after drinking it. This is a main reason why you may hear from those who care to say if you are going to drink booze to do so with food, and keep it to one drink. Overall, eating things containing any amount of processed sugar is the big problem as it will raise blood sugar levels more quickly when contrasted to carbs and fats. at least 10 states including California are making efforts to tighten school vaccination exemption rules after a measles outbreak at Disneyland in Anaheim sickened more than 100 people earlier this year. All states require a schedule of vaccines that a child must have before he or she can be enrolled in school.
Every state allows exemptions from vaccines for medical reasons, and all but Mississippi and West Virginia allow exemptions for religious reasons. Because U.S. measles vaccination rates are high, at 94 percent among kindergarten-age children, the Disney outbreak was less of a problem than in Canada, Schuchat said. "We were lucky in the U.S. We didn't see large outbreaks in schools," she said, adding that in one province in Canada, there were more than 100 measles cases from the Disney exposure "because of a big pocket of undervaccinated people." High vaccination rates provide herd immunity, preventing the spread of a virus to individuals too young or too sick to be vaccinated. According to the report, which included data on 45
states that met reporting requirements and the District of Columbia, the median rate of kindergartners with any exemption was less than 1 percent in six states and greater than 4 percent in 11 states. Mississippi reported the lowest rates of vaccine exemptions with a median of 0.1 percent, while Idaho reported the highest at 6.5 percent. Schuchat said she was encouraged that states increasingly are making vaccination coverage information available to residents online, with as many as 21 states doing so in the current reporting period. Parents can use that data to check on vaccination coverage in their own communities and schools, depending on how the state reports the data, she said. Amelia Boynton Robinson was a visionary and a fighter. She dedicated her entire life to the cause of advancing civil rights and voting rights for AfricanAmericans. As an activist and organizer in the south during Jim Crow, her dream was simple yet ambitious: that every American, regardless of the color of their skin, deserved the right to vote. after fighting to ensure other African-Americans in her community had access to the ballot box. And of course, many of us recall the photos of Amelia being knocked unconscious by
the police of the Edmund Pettus Bridge; images that are eerily relevant today. As a result of those
events on Bloody Sunday and the demonstrations Amelia led in Selma, President Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act, effectively removing barriers to the polls for AfricanAmericans and minorities across the country. Amelia exhibited tremendous strength and resolve during a time when people risked their lives to vote -- a responsibility far too many take for granted today. Earlier this year, I had the privilege of joining Amelia for the 50th anniversary of the March on Selma. It was a profound and moving moment; it’s hard to imagine the Voting Rights Act without Amelia, without her vision and her bravery. We owe it to her – and to all of those who died and risked their lives fighting for the right to vote – to finally
restore the protections of the Voting Rights Act, so all Americans have equal access to the ballot box.” Amelia Boynton Robinson, known as the matriarch of the voting rights movement, died on Wednesday in Montgomery, Alabama, at the age of 104. She was one of the organizers of the March on Selma, and helped persuade Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to bring the Civil Rights Movement to the city. On March 7, 1965 – known as Bloody Sunday – Amelia was knocked unconscious as she and other demonstrators tried to cross the Edmund Pettus Bridge. She was a guest of President Lyndon Johnson’s when he signed the Voting Rights Act at the White House on August 6, 1965.
Minecraft Fueling Creative Mary L. Patterson Receives Ideas, Analytical Thinking the Rotarian of the Year Award in K-12 Classrooms (Continued from page 3) recent gathering, in June in Philadelphia, featured no fewer than two dozen different sessions on Minecraft in the classroom. As the game takes off, some educators are working to ensure it is used to reinforce the academic and technology standards educators are increasingly held accountable for teaching. Take Laura Israelsen, a teacher librarian at Hulstrom Elementary School near Denver, and Michelle Pearson, a language arts and social studies teacher who is on leave to work as an educational staff member with the Colorado State Historical Fund. The duo has spent the past two school years developing, implementing, and sharing a three-week Minecraft unit on historic preservation. In their unit's initial rollout at Hulstrom, 4th graders learned how to access a public database typically used only by professional preservationists and read primary documents from the national and state park services. The students then prepared presentations that included virtual replicas of Colorado's significant architectural sites, constructed in Minecraft, as well as written arguments on whether or not a site should continue to be preserved. The game is excellent for helping teach the state's digital literacy standards, such as preparing students to use Web 2.0 communication tools and learn new software, Israelsen said. Pearson said that Minecraft can also be used to help motivate students to tackle two of the more challenging standards associated with the Common Core State Standards: reading challenging informational texts, and writing for an "authentic" audience. For Connor Smith, now a rising 6th grader, the unit was memorable, mostly because it represented a rare opportunity to use his imagination in school. "Minecraft is a way to express how you think," he said, describing
how his desire to get every detail correct in the Minecraft reproduction of the site he chose, as well as the opportunity to show his creation to real historic preservationists, prompted him to do more in-depth research and preparation than he otherwise might have. "They didn't believe that you could play Minecraft in school and build something historic," Connor said. "Proving them wrong was great." Future Predictions For all the excitement, it can still be a challenge to get many classroom teachers to embrace teaching in such a newfangled way. Israelsen, Pearson, and Richardson all suggested that many teachers are willing to take on such an unconventional tool only with outside support—from a technology specialist or a teacher librarian, for example. And though MinecraftEdu is not prohibitively expensive for most schools, it does cost money. Software licenses to use the game for educational purposes cost $14 to $18 apiece, depending on how many are purchased, and the game's server software costs schools $41. While Microsoft has trod lightly so far, there is also uncertainty about what the future holds now that the game is owned by a corporate titan. In June, the company launched a website that is intended as a destination for educators interested in using the game, and that seems to parallel much of what MinecraftEdu already offers. Ultimately, though, observers from the gaming and education sectors predict continued growth inside schools, both of Minecraft itself and of other games that seek to harness its open-ended approach. "We're at the beginning of creating new kinds of virtual-reality learning spaces," said Jordan Shapiro, an instructor at Temple University and an author and speaker on game-based education. "I think Minecraft is the beginning of that."

Farrakhan: “Justice or Else” March Just the Beginning By Freddie Allen NNPA Senior Washington Correspondent WASHINGTON (NNPA) – In a wide-ranging conference call with the Black Press, the Nation of Islam Minister Louis Farrakhan said the upcoming “Justice or Else” rally set for October 10 celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Million Man March is just the beginning of the movement. Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr., president and CEO of the NNPA and the national director of the 1995 Million Man March, moderated the call, fielding pooled questions from dozens of publishers and editors from Black newspapers across the country. Farrakhan said that walking down the steps of the United States Capitol building and seeing Black men standing together, shoulder-to-shoulder all the way down to the Washington Monument and over to the Lincoln Memorial was his most memorable experience from the Million Man March on October 16, 1995. The minister boasted that the men went home and recommitted themselves to their families and wives, others registered to vote, and gang members left their weapons at home. Critics, however, charged that little long-lasting follow-up was done on the local level. Farrakhan said that those who benefit from White supremacy fear the power of unified Blacks, Latinos and all minority people and have continued to work against that unity, since the 1995 march. Farrakhan said that since the Million Man March, the Black community is not as strong as it should be, so the struggle for “Justice or Else” must take place on two fronts. “We can not go to Washington appeal to our government to intercede to see that Black men and women tried in their courts get justice in accordance with the law and leave our communities in shambles with us killing one another,” said Farrakhan. “We as men and women must take responsibility for our community and rid our community of fratricidal conflict and that strengthens us as we go to our government to

Hill). demand justice.” Farrakhan said that he thanked God for the women who ignited the Black Lives Matter Movement. “We honor the young ladies that fashioned that cry and all who have joined on but no one can rob the young sisters of the honor that God used [them] to say something that caught on and today Black lives do matter,” he said. “Let’s go to work in our communities to make sure that all of our people fall in love with their Blackness and say, ‘Black lives matter’ and Black love will make sure that Black lives matter.” The truth matters, too. The United States Park Police (USPP) estimate of 400,000 attendants at the original march wildly contradicted the estimated count provided by march organizers, which was roughly 1.5 million. Working with Boston University, the Park Service later revised its estimate to 837,214 – more than twice the original estimate. With a 20 percent margin of error, the size of the crowd could have been 655,000 to 1.1 million men, according to
Farouk El-Baz, director of Boston University’s Center for Remote Sensing. Even the lowest revised estimate was more than twice the size of the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Following the controversy over the number of people attending the Million Man March, Congress prohibited the Park Service from making official estimates. Unlike the Million Man March that primarily focused on the empowerment of men of color, the call for “Justice or Else” is meant to address the struggle for justice for Blacks, Native Americans, Latinos, women, military veterans and poor Whites, everyone who feels deprived in America. “Even though are struggles may be different, justice is what we seek for all,” said Minister Farrakhan. The minister also praised Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s work during the last years of his life that revolved around economic equality, unionization and labor rights, and land ownership. Minister Farrakhan noted that Blacks were largely shut out of the
prosperity enjoyed by White settlers following the passage of the Homestead Act of 1862. Blacks weren’t considered citizens in 1862, a key eligibility requirement that prevented them from claiming any of the millions of acres of free land west of the Mississippi River granted to White settlers by the United States government. “We have to have land, brothers and sisters, as a basis for economic development,” said Minister Farrakhan, proposing a legislative agenda that would promote land ownership in the Black community. Farrakhan encouraged Black business owners to advertise in the Black Press and buy subscriptions to community newspapers, and that part of the estimated $1.1 trillion in annual buying power wielded by the Black community be used to build hospitals, factories and to support Black colleges. He also lamented the anger and frustration that young people have expressed across the nation and that uncontrolled and misdirected anger can lead to great destruction. “We don’t have a lot of time, but we can turn the anger of our community into production,” the minister continued, adding that young people will be more than eager to live productive lives rather than lives of crime and suffering and savage behavior, if properly guided. As the presidential election approaches, Minister Farrakhan warned Blacks against casting their votes foolishly and continuing to vote for the Democratic Party that could and should do more for the Black community. He added that he doesn’t see himself voting for Democratic candidates Hillary Clinton (DN.Y.) or Bernie Sanders (D-Vt.). He made no mention of Willie Wilson, the Black Chicago businessman who is also running for president as a Democrat. “The Black vote is a powerful vote,” said Minister Farrakhan. “But unless any of these candidates that are running for president of the United States speak to the need for justice for those that are deprived, why should we give them our vote?”
