Veteran CBS2 & KCAL9 News Anchor Pat Harvey to Receive Los Angeles Area Governors Award LOS ANGELES—Pat Harvey, iconic local news anchor and nationally-renowned broadcast news reporter, has been selected as this year's Los Angeles Area Governors Award recipient. The announcement was made tonight on the CBS2 News at 5pm by Television Academy Chairman and CEO Bruce Rosenblum. Winner of numerous Emmy Awards, Harvey will be presented with this most recent honor at the Los Angeles Area Emmys on Saturday evening, July 25 at The Skirball Cultural Center's Guerin Pavilion in Herscher Hall. The Los Angeles Area Governors Award is the most esteemed honor given by the Los Angeles Area Governors Award Committee and the Board of Governors of the Television Academy for outstanding achievement in the arts, sciences, or management of television over a period of years, or in recognition of an outstanding singular achievement or contribution. "Pat is an iconic figure in Los Angeles who has made invaluable contributions through her work at CBS2 and KCAL9, and philanthropically in the community," said Rosenblum. "She has been at the forefront reporting on the critical news stories facing our city, and her professionalism and integrity as a journalist makes her a deserving recipient of this year's Governor's Award." Harvey began her career in Saginaw, Michigan, at WNEM -TV, moving on to help

In 1989, she moved to KCAL9 in Los Angeles to co-anchor the nation's first nightly three-hour newscast, and 20 years later, joined sister station CBS2. In addition to her current coanchoring duties for CBS2's 5pm and 11pm broadcasts, Harvey appears nationally as a guest cohost on the CBS Television Network daytime show The Talk. Harvey has covered the biggest local news stories, wom-
en's health issues, national political conventions and presidential inaugurations, and has traveled internationally to report on significant world matters. This work has earned Pat multiple Emmy Awards, including three shared with the station for best newscast. In 2008, Harvey received the Genii Award for Excellence in TV Broadcasting from Southern California's chapter of American Women in Radio and Television, and on October 20, 2009, the Los Angeles City Council and L.A. County Board of Supervisors proclaimed it "Pat Harvey Day." Harvey is the recipient of the
L.A. Press Club's Joseph M. Quinn Award in 2004 and the 2010 Golden Mike for Lifetime Achievement Award from the Radio & Television News Association. She has been honored by the Society of Professional Journalists, the Hollywood Women's Press Club with their Ethics Award, and with the Edward R. Murrow Award presented to KCAL9 news for overall excellence. She is a 2012 inductee of the National Association of Black Journalists Hall of Fame at the Newseum in Washington, D.C.
Outside of the newsroom, Harvey has dedicated her career to community service, advocating for children, education, those in the special-needs community and victims of domestic violence. She co-founded and served as the co-chairwoman of the Good News Foundation, and is the recipient of two honorary doctoral degrees from American Intercontinental University and Mount Saint Mary's University, Los Angeles. In 2015, Pat was named a Susan G. Komen Circle of Promise Ambassador in the fight against breast cancer. Harvey has also received the Silver Star Award from the YMCA, and the NAACP's Ida B. Wells Award. The Los Angeles Area Governors Award has been bestowed upon individuals, companies and organizations that have made a positive impact in the Los Angeles community. Compton Mayor Aja Brown Delivers First State of the City Address COMPTON, CA — Compton Mayor Aja Brown delivered her inaugural State of the City address showcasing her vision for Compton and plans to uplift and strengthen all residents. Promising to push forward initiatives and an agenda that puts Compton first, Mayor Brown announced exciting plans for the future of Compton as well as past achievements reached since she took office in 2013. In the Mayor’s State of the City address, Mayor Brown laid out the tremendous challenges she faced coming in office. “In 2013 fiscally the City had generated a $42 million general fund deficit,” explained Mayor Brown. “The City’s employees were forced to do more with less in the aftermath of massive employee layoffs that reduced the workforce by approximately 200 workers.” She continued, “With fewer employees, growing resi-

Hello Everyone, Wake up everybody no more sleeping in bed. Wake up everybody it’s time for thinking ahead. This song is so apropos today. Now, more than ever, we as a people better wake and see the handwriting on the wall that Black people in these United States of America are in dire strait. We are in serious trouble and unless we stand together and break the chain of negative thinking and talking about how Blacks can’t stick together, we are headed in the same direction that we find our native brothers and sisters in today. It was planned out and executed and we see what happened when the planned came together. How many native Americans (Indians) do you see walking around on any given day? Need I say more? Wake up today and let’s take our Godgiven authority as a people who are made in God’s image to stop the negative stereotypes that are constantly being thrown in our faces. We are more than conquerors. We can do all thing through Christ Jesus who give us the victory. But we have to wake up!

Message to the Black Community and the Black Leadership it’s Time for the Black Community to Push Hard By Rahim Islam I know I should not write when I am feeling the way I feel now (upset and disappointed), because the last thing that I want to do is convey the wrong message, but SOMETHING IS SERIOUSLY WRONG WITH THE BLACK COMMUNITY! I liken our condition to a house that is on fire (our community) and the irony is that the hose, loaded with water (organized movement), is right next to the house but no one IS picking up the hose to put out the fire (organizing). I’ve said before, and I will continue to say that unless we do something significant and do it quickly, Blacks face extinction or being relegated to the permanent status of second-class citizenship. It’s time for the Black community to push hard. Brothers and sisters, what more do we need to see to convince us that the permanency of second-class citizenship for future Black generations is inevitable. Is the mass incarceration of Black men enough (with nearly 55% of the prison population is comprised of Black men when our population is only 4%)? Is the demise of the Black family enough (with nearly 80% of all Black families headed by a single parent, mother (this number was 20% in 1960)? Is it that nearly two-thirds of all Blacks families live at or near poverty, (this population is growing at an alarming rate with the reduction of the socalled Black middle class)? Is it the fact that Blacks own less than one-half of one percent of the nation’s wealth (this number hasn’t changed since the emancipation of Black people). Without wealth and capital, there is no socio-economic fight. If you think these numbers are bad, think again. This is just the tip of the iceberg – the problems are systemic and are extreme in every area of life. These among other factors make for a negative trajectory for our children and future Black generations. As bad as things look for the Black community, what is even worse is that so many Black people have come to accept this reality. Where is the sense of urgency and why aren’t there more Black leaders demanding something that could/would address these issues? Where is the energy on a local level or a national level that most of us can relate to that addresses the social and economic issues facing the Black community? Where are the meeting places and meetings to discuss these issues along with possible strategies and solutions? Where is the movement and the centralized effort to fix these issues? Who are our leaders and what are they doing about these facts? We live in a democracy and in a democracy, if you want to win” you must have leadership. Every group is seeking to obtain more control, power, and resources that are very limited and all of them have representation. In order for any idea or group to win above others, leadership is required. Who represents the Black community locally and/or nationally? Who speaks for the Black community when it’s time to negotiate on behalf of the Black community? The honest answer is that the Black community has no one leader. I compare our community to a body without a head because a multitude of leaders is like having no leader at all, especially if those individuals are not working together. While we must engage the masses (they have a huge role to play in the movement), we must organize our leadership (leaders need leadership also). Let me be perfectly clear, our leaders are the only ones with the potential of tackling the massive issues we face. This is no easy feat and will require the coordination and organizing of our most accomplished, most learned and strongest, and our most successful leaders (i.e. business, civic, legal, medical, social, political, corporate, religious, etc.). You are a leader because you have been blessed. Yes, you contributed to your success but your future would look a lot different but for the struggles of those that came before you and it is our belief that “when much is given, much is required.” Given the incredible plight of our community, who could help our community, if not you? I’m frustrated and dismayed by the lack of leadership and inactivity. Nothing is happening and we continue to make excuse after excuse for not organizing ourselves. There is no other option. If we want to be successful, we must put out the fire. Granted, this is some tough stuff and it’s not going to be easy, but we must do for ourselves what no one else will do. If we don’t get a handle on these social and economic issues, as they have developed over the past 60 years, these numbers will get worse, causing future generations to become more vulnerable. I say that we continue to make excuses because we’re not doing what we need to do to save our children. We’re not organizing. Our children don’t care about our status, egos, or our pedigree. Their destiny has already been determined unless we unite around a common cause – BLACK SURVIVAL. Our leadership continues to fail us by not doing the very basic things needed, creating unity. We see division at every level. Our academia has not been able to utilize the knowledge acquired from some of the best universities in the world to advance the self-determination of Black people. Our religious leaders are divided into so many different sects that it’s practically impossible to align to allow for “functional” unity. The on-going spiritual message from each spiritual center is selfserving and is geared at keeping and maintaining the status quo (dis-unity is quietly preached). Our politicians clearly have lost their way. They practice majority politics but forget that they are a minority. When you’re a minority in politics, you consolidate your power by becoming a caucus, although, in many cases the Black caucus is ineffective, unorganized, uninspired, or
nonexistent. Rarely have I seen the Black politicians pull their individual power together. While we lack the individual and organizational capacity in many areas, as a group we are stronger. We are greater than the sum of our parts. Our problem is that we don’t get to see our collective power in action often enough. I hate to break it to you, but no one person or organization is going to save Black people. The problems we face are so acute and severe they will require the highest level of centralizing, coordinating, and strategizing. If you look at a house (or anything), each part, the design, bricks, wood, fixtures, paint, carpets, etc. and even the labor, has its own value. However, putting the parts together in one place at one time into the final product escalates the value exponentially. When it all comes together, it is referred to as synergy. We reference the greatness of our people but to be great is to have great leaders and to be great leaders, they must be able to lead (good action). THE BLACK COMMUNITY IS IN DANGER OF BECOMING A PERMANENT UNDERCLASS IN AMERICA AND SILENCE, EVEN BY DEFAULT, IS UNACCEPTABLE. By permanent, I mean that our children will have greater difficulty in the future of achieving the American dream (this seems almost impossible because it’s not as if our children are doing better). My disappointment lies in the fact that organization of Black leadership is not happening and we must ask the question, why? A few generations of this behavior has created some very bad habits and behaviors that we must overcome. Yes, we have a massive oppressor that has an agenda to enslave the Black community. However, the biggest threat to the future of the Black community is ourselves, mainly the lack of leadership and we’ve come to be extremely good at doubting ourselves. We make excuse after excuse for not working with each other; believing and thinking that we are more than what we are (all that and a bag of chips); working against each other by backbiting and speaking ill of each other; elated and somewhat happy when one of our brothers or sisters has fallen from a high position; infatuation with symbolism and ceremony over substance and sustainability; reactionary responses versus proactive approaches; tearing something down versus building something up; walks, vigils, marches, but no follow up; and we are quick to disavow ourselves from our past and the hurt that is associated with the enslavement of our people (as long as we don’t acknowledge the pain and trauma that America has caused us, we can never heal). WE’VE BEEN BRAINWASHED AND PROGRAMMED BY OUR OPPRESSOR AND TODAY THAT PROGRAMMING HAS US DOING ALL WE CAN NOT TO WORK TOGETHER. The Black community has been seriously harmed by the Black experience in America. How else can you explain our circumstances? If the Black community isn’t suffering from the legacy of slavery, then one must believe that Black inferiority is real (which I don’t believe). We were snatched and robbed from our motherland by extreme force; carted here like cargo under the most vicious and inhumane conditions; placed into the most violent levels of chattel slavery for nearly 300 years; and during this same period, we were systemically stripped of nearly every aspect of our culture, history, language and knowledge of self. Our ancestors suffered from the worst human conditions only to have the leaders of this current generation suffering from a severe case of amnesia forgetting about all of the horrible things that have happened to the Black man in America. Who will speak for our ancestors because they can’t speak anymore? What would our great leaders of the past do today? What would the great Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm Shabazz, Marcus Garvey and many others being doing today? Would they be silent (WE HAVE BEEN PROGRAMMED TO THINK THIS ISN’T IMPORTANT)? Our conditions demand that you get out of your comfort zone and make your voice heard. We must end our self-imposed boycott and join the fight. We can’t/won’t EVER be able to remove the distrust we harbor until we internally fight against the “Catch 22” and get ourselves to the table. Too many of us are sitting on the fence waiting to see what happens. In my humble opinion, there are three things that we must recognize if we are to have a shot at changing our conditions: 1) it’s going to take a significant high level of unity amongst Black people especially our leaders; 2) our progress will only come when we organize our resources, capacities, and people; and 3) we will have to earn the success that we envision. No one will give us what we need and what we deserve. We MUST DO THE WORK – PROGRESS THRU ORGANIZATION What the Black community needs more than anything is UNITY. Not the unity that is some superficial description where all Black people are all doing the same thing at the same time – that’s unrealistic. The unity that I’m referencing is a functional unity – a functional unity where representatives (leadership) from all segments of the community are working together around a common and collective agenda. A. Phillip Randolph stated: “At the banquet table of nature, there are no reserved seats. You get what you can take and you keep what you can hold. If you can’t take anything, you won’t get anything, and if you can’t hold anything, you won’t keep anything. And you can’t take anything without organization.” Restated, “Nobody is going to give us anything – we must take it; we must organize ourselves.” IT IS TIME TO UNITE AND IT IS TIME TO PUSH HARD. These scholarships can be used to pay for college tuition, boarding, books, and more. Every scholarship has different criteria to be eligible, but all are not required to be repaid as long as the scholar continues to meet the guidelines. Here are the top 15 scholarship programs for women and girls in the year 2015: #1 – Executive Women International Scholarship Program: Offers scholarships to both male and female outstanding high school seniors who plan to pursue a fouryear college degree program. Scholarships are based on academics, extracurricular activities, leadership and communication skills. #2 – Linda Lael Miller Scholarships
for Women: For women age 25 or older who want to complete their education. Candidates must complete a 500-word essay that explains the reasons for applying for the scholarship, how the funds will be used, and how the scholarship award will help them with their education and career goals. #3 – Society of Women Engineers (SWE) Scholarships: For women pursuing undergraduate or graduate degrees in the areas of engineering, engineering technology and computer science. Female students must be attending accredited colleges or universities and preparing for careers in technical fields. #4 – Joe Francis Haircare Scholarship: Named after Joe Francis (19331994), the founder of several hair care franchises, this scholarship is for women
(and men) applying for entrance into Cosmetology/Barber School, OR actively enrolled in a Cosmetology/Barber program. An application must be submitted, as well as a one-page essay, and one or two letters or recommendation. #5 – NFRW’s Betty Rendel Scholarship: These awards go to three female undergraduates each year who are attending a four-year accredited college or university and majoring in political science, government or economics. It is open to women across the nation. #6 – Women’s Independence Scholarship Program: Helps women who have survived domestic violence to return to school and become self-sufficient. The primary candidates are single mothers with young children who lack the re-
Mayor Aja Brown Delivers First State of the City Address (Continued from page 1) Highlights of the Mayor’s State of the City address included the announcement that over 19,000 potholes had been repaired along with 2,200 streetlights being replaced and over 5,000 trees having been trimmed. The audience erupted in applause with the news that 88 residential streets had already been repaved with plans to start repaving Central Avenue in the near future thanks to an approximately $1 million grant from Metro for the City’s Safe Streets Bicycle Improvement Project. Mayor Brown also announced that about 10 miles of City streets would be repaved in the upcoming year. Since Mayor Brown assumed office Compton has significantly reduced its debt to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). In addition, $8 million dollars of debt to the Department of Finance has been repaid
and the City has passed a balanced budget on time in since 2013. While the Mayor acknowledged what she referred to as the ongoing fight for “food justice” in Compton with the closing of grocers Fresh & Easy and Ralphs, she announced a new Smart & Final Extra would be replacing Ralphs at the intersection of Alameda Street and Compton Boulevard and a multi -million dollar investment by Ralphs in their Food 4 Less store located in Compton. Mayor Brown also announced that Pressed Juice would be opening up a first of its kind neighborhood co-op in Compton with juices being sold at 25 percent of the retail price and a portion of the proceeds going to the City of Compton. Los Angeles County Sheriff Jim McDonnell and Compton Station Captain Myron Johnson were on hand to help the Mayor celebrate a reduction in homicides
and violent crime in the City over the past couple of years. Mayor Brown announced a $250,000 public safety grant as well as the passing of law in Compton that has eliminated the hourly motel rentals within City limits that aid and abed in human trafficking. Other news that drew applause was the announcement of a significant investment being made by Trammell Crow Company at the site of what is commonly referred to as the Old Brick Yard. “In 2013 I introduced a Community Benefits ordinance that mandates local hiring and business preference requirements,” Mayor Brown told the audience. “This ordinance mandates that 35 percent of new construction and permanent jobs are reserved for Compton residents and we've initiated the local training programs to match. This will ensure that residents are trained and ready for work once the project comes online.”

Association Scholarships: Awarded to students currently enrolled in a nursing degree program. Eligible students must be enrolled in a state-approved nursing program that leads to a LPN or RN licensing. #12 – Women in Federal Law Enforcement (WIFLE) Scholarship Program: Open to undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate female students interested in a career in law enforcement. Eligible students may major in criminal justice, social sciences, public administration, computer science, finance, chemistry, and physics. 13 – Sara Scholarship: Available to female high school seniors who plan to attend college and are active in golf. The renewable scholarship is awarded to 12 deserving female students each year. Students must have excellent academic skills and demonstrate financial need. #14 – Job’s Daughters Supreme Scholarships: Offers several different scholarships for single female students who are members of Job’s Daughters or whose parents are Job’s Daughters members. Applicants can be high school seniors, graduates or currently attending technical school or college. #15 – Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship: Open to female undergraduate seniors or female students enrolled in a graduate program and studying Computer Science or Computer Engineering.
Michael’s Yard Sale By Israel J. Matthews Contributing Writer
Hello, I am back and this week I am going to talk to you about Michael’s yard sale. I hope you will read it and enjoy. Michael woke up on Saturday morning asking his mom if he could have a yard sale to sell some of his stuff. She said it was okay so Michael started right away. He had it all set up to go. Many people came buying a lot of his stuff. He made a lot of money. He thought, “I will spend some and I will save some of the money.” After Michael bought some things he wanted with his money, he put the rest of the money in his savings account he had opened in Chase Bank. Michael began to realize after he made all that money that he could find some more stuff to sell. So he went to his friends houses and asked them for all the stuff that they did not want. So he made more money and again he bought what he wanted, shared some of the money with his mom and the rest he put in his saving account at Chase Bank. Michael loved making money. He enjoyed the yard sale and he also had fun meeting lots of people he had never seen before during the yard sale. I hope you liked it, and I’ll see you next week. God bless:)

CHURCH & COMMUNITY NEWS American Evangelicals Stand Behind Israel By Bob Smietana NASHVILLE, Tenn. — American evangelicals remain among the strongest supporters of the nation of Israel. Most believe God has plans for that nation, both now and in the future. And many of America’s preachers say Christians need to support Israel. Those are among the findings of a study of American attitudes toward Israel and the Bible from Nashville-based LifeWay Research. As part of the study, researchers conducted two separate
surveys of 1,000 Americans, along with a survey of 1,000 senior pastors of Protestant churches. “No piece of literature has had more impact on American culture than the Bible,” said Scott McConnell, vice president of LifeWay Research. “No country is more intertwined with the ancient biblical narrative than Israel, and evangelical Americans see a contemporary connection with the nation.” Researchers found evangelicals see a close tie between God and Israel. About 7 in 10 (69 percent) say the modern nation of Israel was formed as result of biblical prophecy. A similar number (70 percent) say God has a special relationship with the modern nation of Israel. And nearly three-fourths of evangelicals (73 percent) say events in Israel are part of the prophecies
in the Book of Revelation. While evangelicals remain convinced about a tie between Israel and God’s plans, Americans generally are less certain. Less than half (46 percent) believe the formation of modern Israel is a fulfillment of biblical prophecy. More than a third (36 percent) disagree, while 17 percent aren’t sure. Americans are split down the middle over whether Jews are God’s chosen people as referenced in the Bible, with just under half (46 percent) saying they agree. A similar number (44 percent) disagree, while 10 percent are not sure.
And some Americans think God was closer to ancient Israel than to the modern-day nation. About two-thirds (64 percent) of Americans say God had a “special relationship with ancient Israel.” About 1 in 4 (27 percent) disagrees, while 9 percent are not sure. In contrast, only 48 percent of Americans say God has a special relationship with modern Israel—fewer than the 53 percent of Americans who believe God has a special relationship with the United States, according to previously released LifeWay research. About 4 in 10 (39 percent) disagree that God has a special relationship with modern Israel, while 13 percent are not sure. Evangelicals (70 percent) are much more likely to agree than Americans who don’t identify as
evangelicals (38 percent). Overall, nearly half (47 percent) of Americans believe events in Israel are tied to the Book of Revelation. Forty percent disagree, and 13 percent are unsure. Younger Americans, those 18-24, are less likely (36 percent) to see a tie between Israel and the Book of Revelation than those 45 and older (52 percent). Women (52 percent) are more likely to agree than men (42 percent). Those with graduate degrees (24 percent) are much less likely to agree events in Israel are part of the prophecies in Revelation than those with a high school degree or less (55 percent). Support for Israel Schooling and prophecy both play a role in how Americans view Israel. When asked whether they support Israel’s statehood, 42 percent agree, while 35 percent disagree. One in four (23 percent) is not sure. Higher levels of education correlate to higher levels of support for Israeli statehood. Those with a graduate degree are most likely to be supporters at 61 percent, followed by those with a bachelor’s degree (56 percent), those with some college (43 percent), and those with a high school diploma or less (31 percent). Slightly more than half of men (51 percent) say they support Israeli statehood, compared to a third (33 percent) of women. Support is also significantly higher among evangelicals (50 percent) than others (39 percent). Supporters are split on the reasons they back
Israel. Sixteen percent say the Bible tells them to, and 9 percent say it’s because Israel is important for biblical prophecy. Some (13 percent) say they support Israel primarily because Israel is America’s best friend in the Middle East. Others say it’s because Jews needed a refuge after the Holocaust (11 percent) or because Israel is the one and only Jewish homeland (15 percent). Though the term Zionist is synonymous with believing Jews should have their own state, only 8 percent of Americans claim this label. A third (32 percent) of Americans are not sure whether they are Zionist. Among the most ardent of
Israel’s supporters are senior pastors of Protestant churches. Most (80 percent) agree “Christians should support Israel.” About one in 7 (14 percent) disagrees. Even though they support Israel, some pastors have their doubts about Israel’s military actions. About 4 in 10 (41 percent) agree with the statement, “It is hard to defend Israel’s military tactics.” Fifty percent disagree, while 9 percent are not sure. McConnell noted, “It is surprising that evangelicals, who have such a fascination with Israel’s biblical connections, are no more likely to have an opinion about Israel’s statehood than other Americans.”

HEALTH & COMMUNITY NEWS Patients, Doctors Team Up To Transform Health Care By Mark Taylor Ask Aldo Ciccotelli, MD, to describe how he sees the transformation of America's health system, and he tells the tale of two diabetic patients. The middle-age professionals both suffered the same symptoms: frequent urination, fatigue, and thirst. "Both were intelligent and well-educated," said Ciccotelli, a family physician who also is vice president and chief medical officer for Langhorne Physician Services at St. Mary Medical Center, Langhorne, Pa. One patient "kept his appointments, took his medications, changed his diet, and started exercising. He saw a diabetes educator." Today, John Henry is thriving, enjoying his healthy new lifestyle. The second patient ignored the doctor's advice. "She soon lost feeling in her legs, had
one amputated, and went blind," Ciccotelli said. "Last year, she died." For decades, doctors have been paid to perform procedures, not practice prevention or improve care coordination. But a combination of factors - from the aging of the baby boomers to the explosion in health-care and insurance costs to the passage of the Affordable Care Act -- is driving the health-care system and patients to assume more hands-on roles. Nowhere is this more evident than in the management of chronic conditions, such as diabetes, obesity, hypertension, and chronic heart failure, diseases that particularly affect seniors. Driving the change is a monumental shift in how the Medicare system is demanding better outcomes by paying for performance. For instance, hospitals are now penalized if too
Summer Sluggish By Dean L. Jones, CPM As much as we may not want to accept it, our body's blood sugar shoots up whenever we eat sugary-filled foodstuff. In response to that, our pancreas organ floods the bloodstream with insulin, which may make us feel like our energy is intensified; however, the effects are short-lived. The insulin rapidly lowers the blood sugar and we are left feeling sluggish and/or tired, also known as the crash. This is the peak time of the year when all things like candies, pies, ice crème, cookies, and sodas are everywhere at the ready. So it is necessary to discipline ourselves to consume processed sugar in very small portions, together with routinely eating a balanced meal and thereby working to achieve a more healthy life. Especially during the hot days of summer, it is common to be tempted to turn to drinks like Gatorade or Powerade as thirst quenchers. Despite the facts that thirst will end up being neglected drinking these sugary and sodium filled type of beverages, whereas, when you add processed sugar into the body it slows energy levels to a sluggish crawl. Consequently, be mindful that fresh fruit and/or water will resourcefully eliminate thirst. Do not be hoodwinked by ads from companies like Coke and Pepsi offering their respective Life and True less sugar beverages, as there is still a whole lot of sugar in these products. Less sugar campaigns help soda manufacturing companies distance themselves from being looked at as a major cause of the high American obesity rate, which is roughly 35% of the total population. As a result, beverage companies are striking an improved corporate consciousness today in order to better ensure future revenues from their heavily invested beverage brands. There are massive business undertakings in play to reduce processed sugar in most of the brands we see on grocery shelves. Even Kool-Aid has

At a Chester County Hospital diabetes education class, Zakorchemny finally had an epiphany. "I wasn't overeating," she says. "But I was not eating healthy foods." Zakorchemny, who also has multiple sclerosis, had trouble exercising due to poor balance. But she changed her diet and started walking, dropping 25 pounds as her blood sugar numbers improved. "I've been married for 44 years, and I have three grandchildren. I want to be around to see them grow up," she said.

Brooks said it’s an issue the country cannot ignore. “Just on a heart level, I could not have been more moved by the president’s speech because many of the people that were most affected by what he said couldn’t vote for him today, because they don’t have the right to vote,” he said. “Even if they could vote for him on the outside, there are millions of them locked up on the inside, out of sight and seemingly out of mind. But he made clear today they are not out of sight and they are not out of mind. And when he said there are a million fathers locked up, ask ourselves this: how many children does that represent? “How much of America does that represent?” Brooks asked. “I thought it was an extraordinary address, and it moved me profoundly. I spent the better part of seven years in Newark, N.J., working on prison reentry; and that I have a president that says he is concerned about the issue, but not just concerned

We have to stand with him, stand behind those in Congress who are standing for criminal justice reform, which is why we have supported America’s journey for justice in terms of talking about our lives, our votes, our jobs, our schools matter. Our lives can’t really matter if we get profiled at will. Our lives don’t really matter if in fact we can be, as a people, sentenced under draconian drug laws.
Our lives, our life as a country, matters less, if you have 2.3 million people behind bars — when African-American men are 21-times more likely to lose their lives at the hands of the police than their white counterparts. We’ve got to do something about this.” In places like Baltimore, New York and Ferguson tensions between law enforcement and their communities have spilled out into the open, underscoring longstanding concerns among minority communities they’re treated differently in the criminal justice system. As the leader of the nation’s oldest civil rights organization, Brooks has pledged to continue its mission of advocacy that began over a century ago. “I don’t think that anyone who gathered together to create the NAACP 106 years ago could have imagined a day when we’d have the first African-American president speak to our delegates,” Brooks said. “Who could have imagined an organization, of whom only a minority were African American, to have created an iconic American institution, that being the NAACP. And, to have the first Black president stand before us and lay out a bold, visionary plan for reform? “That was hard to imagine then, but I guess I believe today we’re called to exercise our moral and civic imagination to imagine a country in the future that represents the promise of the past,” he said. “The NAACP that we inherited is the NAACP that we should give to the next generation: bold, powerful, risk-taking, willing to do great things because we’re willing to be courageous. That’s who we are, that’s who we represent and that’s what we’re going to do.”

NATIONAL/STATE & REGIONAL NEWS Waters Calls for Universities, Retirement Plans to Divest from Payday Lenders WASHINGTON, D.C. – At the conclusion of a first-of-itskind Capitol Hill gathering of lawmakers and religious leaders to discuss the impact predatory payday and small-dollar lending practices are having in communities across America, Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA) announced she will be calling on some of the country’s most notable endowments and state retirement plans to begin to take steps to divest their interests in one of the country’s largest payday lenders. The announcement came at an Interfaith Payday Lending Roundtable convened by Waters, the Ranking Member of the Financial Services Committee. The event brought together leaders from Muslim, Christian and Jewish communities to highlight the moral and religious objections that faith leaders have raised in response to predatory payday and small-dollar lending practices in communities across America. As a follow-up to the event, Waters announced she will be sending letters to some of the country’s most notable endowments, including the Harvard Management Company, the University of California’s Board of Regents, and Cornell’s Office of University Investments – as well
as state retirement plans in New York, Illinois, Colorado, Virginia and Montana – calling on them to begin to take steps to divest their interests in Ace Cash Express – one of the country’s largest payday lenders. “Absent substantial reforms in their business practices, public employee retirement assets and university endowments should not support an industry that leaves thousands of Americans trapped in cycles of debt – especially companies that have violated federal law,” Waters said at the event. “We all have a responsibility to ensure that our communities do not support private equity firms that own or invest in payday or other small-dollar lenders.” Panelists at the roundtable discussed the impact of payday and small-dollar lending practices on the communities that these faith leaders serve, and described the advocacy efforts taking place to combat the practices. South Carolina Judge Extends Order Sealing Church Massacre Documents By Harriet Mcleod A South Carolina judge on Thursday extended for another week a temporary order sealing court documents and silencing lawyers and others involved in the case of the slayings of nine people at a historic black church in Charleston last month. Ninth Circuit Judge J.C. Nicholson cited concern about "any graphic pictures of the victims dead on the floor of the church or 911 calls that might have recorded the sounds of victims." Suspected gunman Dylann Roof sat quietly in a gray striped prison suit and shackles next to a public defender during a 30minute hearing in which the judge
interested parties, including relatives of the victims, to be heard. Nicholson issued the order last Friday citing "substantial pre-trial publicity" that could jeopardize Roof's right to a fair trial. On Thursday, however, he said the police photos and 911 calls were his main concern. "Frankly at this stage, the court does not think pre-trial publicity is a problem," he said. The press association argued the public had a right to know about the case and that the judge's order was too broad. Thursday was Roof's first appearance in court since a magistrate's bond hearing on June 19, in which he appeared by video standing in a

The 21-year-old white man was arrested a day after the June 17 killings and charged with nine counts of murder in what authorities say was a racially motivated massacre. A defense attorney told the hearing Roof's competency to stand trial is not an issue and that he has a high school certificate. His attorneys waived bond, but the judge said he was denying it anyway. Prosecutors have not said if they will seek the death penalty and Roof has yet to enter a plea. The South Carolina Press Association had challenged Nicholson's decision last week to issue a gag order on potential trial participants as well as banning the release of documents including 911 police dispatch calls, coroner's reports and witness statements. Nicholson extended the ban until a hearing on July 22 to allow other

A grand jury indicted Roof on nine murder charges in the killings of Bible-study members at Charleston's Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal church including its pastor, the Rev.
