Elder Abuse and Unlawful Evictions by L.A. Sheriffs Running Rampant in L.A. Black Neighborhoods By Dr. Henry L. N. Anderson LOS ANGELES—My name is Henry L. N. Anderson. I was born May 23, 1934. Less than two months before my 81st birthday, I was unlawfully evicted from my residence of 53 years! “Gentrification” was in full swing. It started nine years earlier, when a bank agent offered me a $600,000 loan at age 72, with an “income” of $800/mo from Social Security. “How will I repay this money,” I asked. “You won’t have to; we set aside some of the money for the low payments during the first 2 or 3 years; by that time the value of the property would have increased—maybe doubled—and you pay the loan off, with enough money left over for a nice little retirement fund supplement.” During more than three years of pre-foreclosure and “loan modification” procedures, I tried to hold the bank to its promise; I reminded them “My income has not changed.” They kept trying to get me to say it had. I held firm; and while waiting for a de-

Bishop Noel Jones, John Singleton, Brad Johnson, Antonio Villaraigosa and Janice Bryant Howroyd Honored with National Action Network Rise of the Phoenix Awards By Gloria Zuurveen Editor-in-Chief LOS ANGELES— Bishop Noel Jones, Pastor, City of Refuge Church, accepted his National Action Network (NAN) Rise of the Phoenix Award on Wednesday evening, August 12, 2015, at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles and afterward gave a profound thought-provoking message. He first thanked NAN for the award because they are solution oriented. He said, “One of the things that is so bothersome today in the church and we’re trying to change it the best way we can is that we are so caught up in our identity that we are no longer relevant. Because in many ways the church has preached Americanism for the gospel and we’ve become so capitalistic in our thinking that many of our voices are not heard because everyone seems to be so concerned about being politically correct that no one speaks from their heart anymore.” NAN’s founder and president the Rev. Al Sharpton and its Western Regional Director, Rev. K. W. Tulloss works tirelessly to give voice to the voiceless and to act as advocates for those in need. This year along they’ve worked by focusing heavily on policing policy, education equity, voting rights, economic justice.

I called the bank and was told it was “a mistake…to ignore it.” It did not take long to realize the bank lied and had, indeed, foreclosed. With limited funds, I found a non-profit organization willing and able to assist me. Bankruptcy provided options. The Bankruptcy Law is very specific about Post Foreclosure procedures; and the first is an “Automatic Stay.” That means “all adversarial actions shall cease.” Banks do not like bankruptcy laws; supervising Sheriffs admit they do not receive “much train-

Gentrification under the ‘color of law’ cannot be allowed to succeed. The pattern of unlawful behavior by personnel sworn “to protect and to serve” is outrageous. Not only senior citizens, but younger families with children, widows and disabled persons, otherwise healthy but temporarily unemployed, veterans, and retirees are all “victims of banks, lawyers, brokers and flippers” who manipulate the real Please see Sheriffs, page 10

Hello Everyone, Praise be to God who gives us the victory. Bishop Noel Jones spoke some powerful words at the National Action Network on Wednesday night. He said we need to keep our money in our pockets and support businesses in our communities. The message was dynamite and need to be heard over and over again. He was the recipient of the NAN award and he was right on point. Let us try to make a difference by supporting one another in their businesses. We can turn thing around if we trust God and believe what He said. He said that He will make our enemies our footstool. He said that he will give us more than we can even ask or think. We must take Him at his word and believe by faith His word is true. Let us take to the streets to rescue our young men and young girls from the world. We, all of us can make a difference.

Michael Goes To Church By Israel J. Matthews Contributing Writer Hello this is Mr. Israel Matthews speaking I’m going to tell you something Michael learned at church. I hope you like it. Michael was sitting on the chair listening to what the teacher said. It was about God’s wonderful world. Let Michael tell you what it is about. At first the earth was dark and empty. Gods spirit moved over the waters and God said "Let there be light" and there was light for the day and He called the darkness night and that was the first day. On the second day God separated the waters below from the waters above and He called the space in between, heaven. On the third day God created the dry land and the seas. He said "Let the land have plants and fruit trees." and it was so and God saw that it was good. Then God said "Let there be lights in the heavens to separate day and night and the seasons" and so God created the sun, the Moon, and the stars. and God saw that it was good. That was the fourth day. On the fifth day God filled the seas and the skies with living creatures. He saw that it was good. Then God created living creatures of all kinds on the land; cattle and creeping things and wild animals and it was good. And then God said "Let us make man in our image, and he will rule over all living creatures." And so God created man and woman. God blessed them and told them to care for the living creatures. He told them he had given all of them the food they needed to live. He saw all that and it was very good. That was the sixth day. On the seventh day God rested. Michael loved the story he heard. He loved church.

HEALTH & COMMUNITY NEWS For Fat Loss, Calories May Matter More Than Fat or Carbs By Lisa Rapaport (Reuters Health) - Want to lose body fat? At least initially, a diet low in fat may be better than one that limits carbohydrates, a U.S. study suggests. To test the effects of cutting fat or carbs head-to-head, researchers put 19 obese adults in the hospital twice, each time reducing their calorie intake by about 30 percent and putting them all on identical exercise routines. During one stay, they reduced calories by reducing the proportion of carbs, and for the other one they cut a similar number of calories by reducing fats. Eliminating fat calories for six days during the experiment led to about 89 grams (3.1 ounces) a day of body fat loss, compared with 53 grams (1.9
ounces) a day of fat loss from restricting carbs, the study found. “Our data and our model suggest that the body doesn’t care that fat calories were cut,” Kevin Hall, a researcher at the National Institutes of Health, said by email. “It just kept burning the same amount of fat as it did before which led to a substantial imbalance between the fat eaten and burned and therefore body fat loss.” But when researchers calculated the long-term impact of the two approaches, they estimated that differences in fat loss would diminish over time. Globally, 1.9 billion adults are overweight or obese, according to the World Health Organization. Obesity increases the risk of heart disease, diabetes, joint disorders and
The Funding Bias By Dean L. Jones, CPM This week a number of media outlets put Coca-Cola on blast for its million dollar sponsorship of a science-based research and preferred outcome in addressing America's obesity problem. The general results desired by Coca Cola from this study is to show how in order to maintain a healthy weight a person needs to regularly work out, and stress less about cutting calories. This Coca Cola funded bias outcome added another dimension by working hand-in-hand with scientists supporting them both financially and logistically to form a brand new nonprofit organization. The organization is called the Global Energy Balance Network, which is now operating to promote the argument that weightconscious Americans are overly fixated on how much they consume versus doing physical exercises. Investing money to back a research project for swaying claims in your favor is a very old ploy, as Coca-Cola is doing what many other organizations have routinely undertaken to gain desired outcomes. Such as, ConAgra Foods, Healthy Foods of America, McNeil Nutritionals, Nestle Nutrition Institute, Nutrition & Health Partnership, The Peanut Institute, Slim Fast Foods Company, Johnson & Johnson, have all spent their money in backing reports that twist reality. Funding this study comes at a time when soda sales are noticeably dropping as American consumers move away from sugary drinks, making Coca Cola selfish in wanting to get consumers to drink an unhealthy product. Coca Cola probably made the investment for publicizing a persuasive marketing message to cleverly craft how that their sugary sodas are okay to drink in order to turn vanished consumers back to drinking sodas. On the other hand, I must say that this Coca Cola sponsored study can be taken in with a view that individual knowledge is paramount in preventing or losing fat. Given that eating wrong is a choice, in turn knowledge is es-

Dean L. Jones sential in understanding that routinely ingesting sugary-filled drinks will heighten the risk of becoming fat, developing Type 2 diabetes, cancer, heart disease and/ or other major health complications. Consuming greater than 20% of your calories from added sugar doubles the risk of contracting those aforementioned diseases. For a long time medical proof has shown evidence of how the over consumption of added sugar can not only cause obesity, but also considerably increase the risk of contracting cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Consequently, what can be considered right about Coca Cola's funded study is that foodstuff by itself is not to blame for being overweight, because whatever we ingest is an end result from personal choice. Fast food outlets customarily add sugar, and grocery shelves are stocked with countless numbers of products with added sugars, including, but not limited to, sugar-sweetened beverages, grain-based desserts, fruit drinks, dairy desserts, candy, ready-to-eat cereals and yeast breads. certain cancers. Previous research has found obese people often struggle to shed excess pounds or keep weight off when they do lose it. Lifestyle changes such as following a healthy diet and getting regular exercise can often help in the short-term but fail to produce lasting results, particularly among people who have more than 100 pounds to lose before reaching a healthy weight. For the current study, Hall and colleagues set out to test a popular belief that drives many people to try low -carb diets – that reducing foods like pasta, white bread and sugary treats can curb supplies of the hormone insulin, which in turn limits the body’s ability to accumulate fat. With less insulin, the body may also burn existing fat stores for energy and lose weight. Ten men and nine women
were hospitalized twice for two-week stays, which included five days to establish a baseline diet before starting the experiment restricting calories through fat or carbohydrate reduction. In addition to prepared meals, they all exercised on a treadmill for one hour a day at a set pace and incline. In one respect, the study lent credence to popular beliefs about low-carb eating. Cutting carbs did indeed decrease insulin production in the study. It also led to an increased breakdown in stored fats that can be used for energy, a process known as fat oxidation. By contrast, the low-fat diet didn’t significantly change insulin production or fat oxidation. It’s hard to say how these results might translate into weight loss in the real world, given how tightly controlled the food intake and energy output was for study partici-
pants during their hospitalized diet test, the authors point out in the journal Cell Metabolism. But the results do offer solid evidence that low-carb diets aren’t superior for fat loss, Susan Roberts, a nutrition researcher at Tufts University, notes in an editorial accompanying the study. “Basically what the results say is that overall energy balance is the biggest factor – how do you cut calories in what you eat,” Roberts said by email. To help answer this question, more research is needed that explores how consumption of fat, carbohydrates and protein influences how many calories people eat, she said. “Moderation is not a cool word these days, but if it actually works better we should be working out how to make that the case,” Roberts said. John Singleton said, “The more we are able to see different reflections of our soul on film, when we put soul on images and I am not talking about just putting a black face on an image because you can have a black face on image and not have soul, I truly feel that it has changed and evolved us, America and the world at large to put these images of us and our multiplicities on film.” “Me realizing my dream as a filmmaker it allowed several other people to realize their dream, people who would have never even thought about making a film, television or anything else are following their dream because I followed my dream,” said Singleton. NEWS Elder Abuse, Unlawful Evictions by L.A. Sheriffs Running Rampant in L.A. Black Neighborhoods (Continued from page 1) estate market for personal gain. From kicking in doors with guns drawn, at residences where minor children are to forcing families, renters, and guests out “within the hour,” the Unlawful Eviction giant looms large. There is a crisis of the miscarriage of justice in Los Angeles County, for sure, and perhaps in counties up and down the state of California. When confronted, deputies huddle in short ‘confides’ and go through the motions of “examining the legal papers” presented, but all the time acting like “teens who are hiding some dirty little secret.” A Watch Commander (whose I.D. is in my files, along with several others) volunteered his prior knowledge by confirming: “Bankruptcy, from what I know that means ‘an automatic stay’ is in place.” “Yes!” I ex-
claimed: “That is what your deputies continue to disregard, ignore, and counter act, with impunity!” I soon realized he was ‘toying’ with me. I felt betrayed, but knew I had to persevere. I have experienced numerous trips to the Sheriffs Station to seek assistance and had encounters on the front yard at my property address, trying for acknowledgment of due process. In the end, “badge and bullets” have the last say; and they prevail. Deputies appear more like ‘Gestapo’ than peace officers, more like “agents of the banks/ lawyers/brokers/flippers” than like representatives of “law and order” and our Constitutional form of government. In this gross negligence, doors of homes are kicked in with guns drawn during the wee hours of the morning; families and ill persons and seniors are forced out of years of residence in a matter of minutes, in less than one hour! “All they own in the world is set out on the curb, and if not moved in 5 hours, will be dumped.” Yet, these “crimes” by Law Enforcement go unabated. Who shall address this growing wave of gentrification? Who will insist that Laws of the Land govern people’s conduct, and especially persons sworn to
defend the Constitution? All lives matter; personal dignity is an invaluable asset. All the documentation needed is available; years of “official abuse” has gone unchecked. This is not a condemnation upon the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department; it is, instead, an “expose” of a ‘character of behavior that has been on-going for so long, some deputies “really believe” their “unlawful evictions” are lawful. But, there are others who have been advised, but they reject and ignore. They persist in wrong doing, knowing full well that they are “stepping over the line.” I will not attempt to define their motives; that will be for those looking further into this sinister conduct. The need is extremely urgent. Henry L. N. Anderson (BS, MAR, Ed.D., Ph.D., LL.D., D.D.) Email: dr.henrylnanderson@yahoo.com .

NATIONAL/STATE & REGIONAL NEWS Black Delivery Driver Replaced By Manager After Lowe’s Customer Demands White Employee By Peter Holley Marcus Bradley, an AfricanAmerican delivery driver for Lowe's, says he was stopped from making a delivery by his local store in Virginia following a request for a white deliveryman by white store customer. (AP) Marcus Bradley, a delivery driver for Lowe’s Home Improvement in Danville, Va., was making a routine delivery last week when, he said, he received a call from a manager asking him to return the shipment to work. “I asked him why I couldn’t do it, and he said because you’re black and they don’t want you at the house,” Bradley told ABC affiliate WSET. Bradley said his manager told him the customer gave the company specific instructions not to send a black employee to the home. When Bradley returned to the store, he was replaced by a white driver, WSET reported. Bradley, an 11-year veteran of the company, said he was shocked, and so was fellow deliveryman Alex Brooks, who has worked with Bradley for years and was sitting next to him in the delivery truck when the manager called. “To me, it just ain’t right for a business that we work at to go on with the woman’s wishes,” Brooks told WSET. Brooks, who is white, told the station he refused to get back in the truck and complete the delivery without his longtime partner. “It was one of those things like, ‘These guys will get over it,'”

Chris Ahearn, a Lowe’s spokeswoman, told The Washington Post that the manager involved in the incident has been fired and that the company wants its drivers to know that “we back them completely.” “We’ve reached out to the drivers and one of our senior executives went to the store to apologize to them in person,” she said. “We have zero tolerance for discrimination of any kind, and we should never have accepted the terms of the sale with the individuals who were delivered to.” [A

Congresswoman Waters Marks 80th Anniversary of the Creation of Social Security Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Maxine Waters (DCA), Ranking Member of the Financial Services Committee, marked the 80th anniversary of the landmark Social Security Act. Signed into law by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1935, the Social Security Act has provided economic stability and retirement security to millions of hard working Americans. The Congresswoman released the following statement: “In today’s economic climate we must never forget about the impact of legislation like the Social Security Act of 1935. When the program was first implemented, it covered a very limited number of Americans. Since then it has grown and dramatically evolved into a nearly universal system and, as a result, 93% of American workers pay and contribute to Social Security. “Today, nearly 59 million Americans rely on the earned benefits of Social Security, including 9 million veterans. Furthermore, 8.2
million disabled workers and 6.9 million widows/widowers and spouses of retired and disabled workers are supported by this undeniably necessary Act. “A world without Social Security is one that is hard to fathom. Without Social Security, the poverty rates for Black and Latino seniors would triple. Social Security lifts 15 million elderly Americans out of poverty, including more than 1.2 million elderly people in California. Without Social Security, 22 million Americans, including 1 million children, would fall into poverty. “Today, when the average American has only $2500 in retirement savings, we can rest assured that Social Security will provide our citizens with a means to retire and live a life with dignity. It is clear that Social Security and the benefits it provides for seniors, retirees, veterans, disabled persons, and families of retired workers cannot be overstated.”
