Paul Radke Celebrated His 85th Birthday with Friends and Colleagues at Adelle and Charles Walker’s Baldwin Hills Home By Gloria Zuurveen, Editor-in-Chief and Margo Wainwright LOS ANGELES—Paul Radke was all smiles and amazed when he stepped into the beautiful home of Adelle and Charles Walker in the upscale community of Baldwin Hills on Saturday, March 12, 2016 to find a group of his closest friends and colleagues gathered to celebrate his 85th birthday. Paul, a native of New Jersey and a transplant to Los Angeles 30 years ago, has been fruitful and he has touched the hearts and lives of so many people of all races and ethnic groups, so much so, that the celebration was well deserving as he has not slowed up but has remained diligently committed to the building up of all he meets. “It is not often that we get the opportunity to celebrate and honor such an unsung hero as

Paul,” said Margo Wainwright. “Especially, since he has spent the last 66 years of his life working hard to help keep our Country safe during the first 26 years of service—and the last forty, improving the quality of life for any and everybody that he has ever come in contact with,” Wainwright said. Paul moved to Los Angeles in January 1986, after having served his country for 26 years retiring as a Lt. Col from the US Air Force. In the Air Force, Paul worked in a number of management positions from remote radar sites, Viet Nam; as an internal auditor; and as a Budget and Program Analyst for two tours in the Pentagon. When Paul entered the Air Force he was a high school graduate. During his Air Force career, he attended the University of Chicago and earned his MBA. After having retired he spent ten

years working in the Department of Commerce as a budget analyst and for a computer time sharing company as a computer programmer. After coming to Los Angeles Paul began to work with an organization that was in its infancy and he along with three others established and developed Youth Intervention Program. Paul has used the training and experience he gained to help the community. For the past 30 years Paul has devoted his life to helping small businesses and non profit organizations (start ups as well as existing small businesses) flourish. He served as a teacher at YIP Alternative Education and Work Center (for LAUSD). He has helped hundreds of young people in south Los Angeles County finish high school, go on to college and become success-

EDITORIAL/OPINION Publisher’s Column

Dr. Gloria Zuurveen Founder /Owner/ Publisher/Photographer

Hello Readers , God is good all the time and all the time God is good. We are so blessed to live in America. Even in times like these when you have such a divide among the people. You have those who are pulling for Donald Trump that show great signs of racists, yet, you have Black as well who are pulling for him because he is speaking what they are too afraid to say about current issues today. We must pray for God’s guidance and we must pray for God’s provision in times like these because there appear to be a feeling in the air that there is going to be a rising up of people because of differing opinions about the way things ought to be. On one hand you Hillary Clinton who is receiving what appears to be a majority of our votes yet we have not laid out a plan or an agenda that reflects our issues and concerns. Again, I say, in times like these it is about prayer, praying and more praying. God is the “Ultimate Decision Maker” because He made us and He knows what is best for us. Lest we forget we “He is the potter and we are the clay.” Praise Him for who He is. Daily! He is worthy.

Open Letter from the Sheriff of Los Angeles County Dear Parents, NUDE #SELFIES AND THE NEED TO PROTECT OUR CHILDREN This week, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) Human Trafficking Bureau (HTB) held a news conference and provided reporters a comprehensive update on the horrific nature and the sheer number of human trafficking cases that involve children and young teens taking nude photos of themselves and sending them over the internet. What may have started as a copycat of an online trend is now manifesting itself as a nexus between our teens and the predators who seek to exploit them for profit.

on file sharing sites, exponentially exposing these inappropriate and illegal images of a young girl or boy. Afterward, our young victims often fall into deep depression and have suicidal feelings which stay with them for a lifetime. Our youth need public figures and parents to work together and provide information to our families about the highrisk consequences of inappropriate photo sharing. We need and want to partner with high profiles individuals whose form of self -expression is not blatantly a form of commerce, but a demonstration of the importance of setting goals and teaching our children, but especially our girls, that they have more to offer than just their bodies.

In 2015, the LASD HTB and its co-located partners in the Los Angeles Regional Task Force on Human Trafficking, investigated 519 cases that involved nude photos of girls and boys as young as 8 years old. These photos are forever circulating in cyberspace. Of these cases, one in four photos involved young teenage girls and boys who had taken nude “selfies,” perhaps as an ”act of love” for a boyfriend or girlfriend, an act of teenage rebellion, a cry for attention, or did so because they were duped by someone posing as a friend or teenage acquaintance. All too often, these images end up on the internet or in the hands of child predators, some of whom actually make contact with these children with specific intent of luring them into a relationship, extorting them for additional photos and videos, or in some cases, even money. These cases slice across all socioeconomic and racial lines.

Parents should also understand the legal jeopardy for teens sending nude photos over the internet or cellular devices. Directing someone to make, send, or possess these photos is both a federal and state crime. Every day, our Human Trafficking Bureau sees the tragic realization for parents who learn of their child mimicking what they see in the media, or buying into the myth that their online accounts are truly private, truly secure, that they can control the access of the increasingly sophisticated criminal enterprises who hunt for their next victims on the very platforms parents may believe are just for fun. I encourage parents to learn more about the consequences of sexting and sharing nude photographs, and the threat of on -line predators pose to our children by contacting the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (www.missingkids.org), the Los Angeles Regional Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, or the LASD Human Trafficking Bureau’s Sexual Assault Felony Enforcement (SAFE) team, at (323) 526-5156. In addition, the SAFE team can assist victims and families and provide valuable direction in mitigating the some of the issues that may arise if their child has already engaged in this conduct. Let us do this for our children, and rest assured, the detectives from our LASD HTB will pursue, to the fullest extent of the law, predators engaged in online sexual exploitation of our children. Sincerely, Jim McDonnell

Year to date in 2016, in just a two-and-a-half month period of time, LASD HTB detectives investigated 81 cases involving nude and compromising photographs and videos of our young children and teens on the internet. The quantity of these images number in the thousands. Online forums and websites that market themselves as platforms where these images ‘disappear’ are very misleading; let me be clear; these images NEVER disappear. They are forever present on the internet, viewed and traded like baseball cards by child molesters, predators, and extortionists, many of whom re-post these nude images

Clinton Makes Case for Black Vote By F. Michael Higginbotham From the AFRO With the Democratic primary season upon us, political pundits have wondered whether Hillary Clinton will enjoy the same enthusiastic support from the African-American community in her presidential bid that President Barack Obama received. Others have wondered whether she actually deserves the same level of allegiance from African-American voters. Based upon her campaign thus far, there can be no doubt that the answer to both questions is a resounding “Yes.” Hillary Clinton’s focus on racial issues in her presidential campaign began with an April 29th speech at Columbia University in New York City, where she spoke about recent police brutality incidents. Her wide-ranging discussion of the causes of racial unrest and her proposed solutions demonstrate a deep and thoughtful understanding of longstanding racial inequities both in the criminal justice system, and in the broader economic and political arenas throughout America. Hillary opened by recognizing that while the vast majority of law enforcement officers perform their difficult jobs with respect for those they serve and in compliance with the law, something is seriously wrong in many of the current relationships between police and minority communities. She is absolutely right. Many American cities have had poor police community relations for decades. And with the recent discovery that a white Oklahoma City police officer raped 13 black women, while on duty, over the span of several years, minority perceptions of law enforcement are likely to get worse. Such perceptions have much basis in fact. During the last two decades, the United States Department of Justice has conducted 67 investigations of civil rights violations by police departments. Of those 67 investigations, 24 departments across the U.S. were found to have serious violations requiring judicial oversight. The Department of Justice has intervened in 16 police departments found to have patterns of excessive or deadly force based on race. Over the last seven years, the Obama administration has intervened in four departments including Ferguson, Missouri, where black teenager Michael Brown was shot and killed by a White officer and Baltimore, Maryland, where a young black man mysteriously died in police custody.

Clinton called for body cameras on every police officer in the nation as one step for dealing with this problem. This is an excellent start as bad relations have been exacerbated due to a lack of complete information or conflicting testimony where even implausible police officer versions are accepted as truth. Body cameras are not a cure-all, but they certainly would increase the level and accuracy of information and would likely lead to more indictments and convictions of officers who commit police misconduct. Hopefully, the risk of exposure would also significantly reduce misconduct. Hillary’s most important observation, though, was that the issues raised by the recent deaths of blacks in the hands of police, concern far more than police practices. She explained that a comprehensive approach is desperately needed to address longstanding problems. She began by focusing on disparities in employment. Unemployment among Blacks nationally is twice as high as that for Whites and, in some cities, like Chicago, nearly half of blacks between 20-24 years old are neither working nor in school. As Clinton said, “There is something wrong when more than one out of every three young black men in Baltimore can’t find a job.” More recently, in a debate with Bernie Sanders, Clinton enthusiastically embraced President Obama’s agenda, specifically endorsing his policies on health care, education, criminal justice reform, and on the economy. All are policies Hillary knows are popular with the president’s African-American constituency. She closed the debate saying that, “Obama does not get the credit he deserves,” and vowing to build on his legacy of achievement. Hillary Clinton understands not only that Black lives matter, but that justice requires fundamental reform in the courts, on the streets, and in classrooms, offices, and voting booths. No doubt, as the primary season concludes and the general election begins, Clinton must make her case to Black (and all) voters as Obama did eight years ago. With her performance thus far, as evidenced by receiving 80% of the Black vote in the South Carolina primary – a greater percentage than candidate Obama receiv ed in 2008, Hillary Clinton continues to present a convincing argument. EDUCATION & COMMUNITY NEWS Corporal Punishment: 70% Higher for Black Children than White Children in California Schools By S.E. Williams From BlackVoiceNews (BVN)—“Corporal punishment being a matter of concern has multidimensional and obnoxious impacts over the academic performance/career and sociopsychological well-being of the students…Furthermore, evidence has been found through research that corporal punishment plays a significant role to hinder the learning capacity of students and impede the zeal of creativity.” –International Journal of Business and Social Science Corporal punishment can be defined as the use of physical force intended to cause pain, but not injury, for the purpose of correcting or controlling a child’s behavior. A recent post by the Brookings Research Institute highlighted how black children in public schools in America are twice as likely as white children to be subject to corporal punishment. The assessment was based on nationwide data from the 2011-12 school year (the latest year available) reported by schools to the Office of Civil Rights, Department of Education. The report has reminded all Americans that serious disparities remain in how black children are treated in American schools. The Brookings Institute’s assessment is notable for two important reasons. Firstly, although the majority of states have banned corporal punishment, including California that eliminated corporal punishment in schools in 1986, most states, including California as defined in its Education Code Section 4900049001, maintain the right for school authorities to use reasonable force and restraint to quell a disturbance that threatens physical injury to others; to obtain possession of weapons or other dangerous objects; in self-defense or for the protection of persons or property. Although these caveats exist in California, public school teachers can be charged with child abuse or assault for spanking their students. According to the Brookings institute, there were 42,000 reported incidents of black boys and 15,000 incidents of black girls being beaten by educators in their school during the

2011-12 school year. The report highlighted two important facts. Firstly, black students are more likely to reside in states that use corporal punishment extensively, primarily in the south; and secondly, in a number of states, black students are disproportionately singled out for corporal punishment. Seven states accounted for 80 percent of school corporal punishments. Not surprisingly those states included Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Texas and Arkansas. Six of these states including Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Arkansas, Texas, and Tennessee plus Louisiana accounted for 90 percent of corporal punishment incidents against black students. The report revealed one reason given for black students being subject to more corporal punishment is that, “they live in those states responsible for most of the corporal punishment of all children.” Black students are disproportionately beaten in several states in the Deep South. For example, black children are twice as likely to be struck as white students in North Carolina and Georgia, 70 percent more likely in Mississippi, 40 percent more likely in Louisiana, and 40 percent more likely in Arkansas. On the other hand, the report also indicated there are some southern states with a high incidence of corporal punishment where it is administered equally between black and white students. While heavy use of corporal punishment is more common in states of the former Confederacy, the dispar-

ity exists in northern states as well. According to the report, schools in both Pennsylvania and Michigan are almost twice as likely to strike black children as white even though these states have

overall rates of corporal punishment that are low. Surprisingly, there is also broad disparity relative to the administration of corporal punishment in schools in places most would not suspect.

For example, in the state of Maine, black children are eight times as likely to be punished as white children. However, what is most surprising is in states like California, Colorado and Ohio whose rates of corporal punishment for black children are 70 percent or more higher than for white children. The data used to prepare the Brookings Institute report is a product of the U.S. Department of Education Civil Rights Data Collection (CRDC). The goal of the CRDC is to obtain data related to the nation’s public school districts’ obligation to provide equal educational opportunity. School district participation in the data collection process is mandatory as authorized under the statutes and regulations of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 among other state and federal statutes.

By Israel Matthews Contributing Writer Hello Readers, I have been away for a while and Michael has been taking a little vacation also. I am glad to say that I am back and I will continue our adventures with Michael. But first, I have to say something about my going to the Los Angels Lakers game recently. It was great! Especially the Lakers girls. I was assisting my grandmother, Gloria Zuurveen, Pace News publisher. I took pictures of all the guests who were in the Toyota’s press box. I enjoyed all the fabulous food. Also, I am excited to report that I was chosen to play Jesus in my school’s Easter Play at Redeemer Elementary School. It was so excited when they announced that I would be the one to play, of all people, Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God. What an awesome opportunity given to me by my teacher, staff and fellow students at Redeemer. Izzy’s Column has been missed by many of my readers and again, I am back and I am ready to get to work entertaining and educating you about the “Life of Michael”. So, starting next week, we plan on having Michael back in Izzy’s Column to talk about his exciting and fun-filled trip he recently took to Skateland in Northridge. It was fun and Michael had a blast but we wont talk about all the inside information until next week. Be blessed and have a blessed weekend.

Join us with Dr. Reynolds, Dr. Norwood & 5 Pastors preaching, "Christ's 7 Last Words". Bring your prayer requests to be prayed over at The Miracle Wall! Submitted by Dr. Jynona Norwood.

Matthew 27:15-26 As Resurrection Sunday come, we must ask ourselves are we still crucifying Jesus and saving Barabbas for our own satisfaction. It is important doing this season that we check out our minds and hearts to make sure we are not in a perpetual state of making the wrong choice about who can save us from all the troubles of this world system. We must not be like the crowd that chose a notable prisoner, Barabbas over the Savior of this world system, Jesus. Make the right choice and choose Jesus as your Savior. No president, be it Trump, Clinton, Sanders or Cruz, can give you the peace that pass understanding what is going on in this world today. Only the Savior, Jesus the Christ, the Son of the Living God has the answer. The people said, “Let Him Be Crucified” because they didn’t know the way. They didn’t know that the King that would be crowned and crucified would be the Savior of all who call on his name would also show us the way. Because He was crucified, and Barabbas was chosen instead to stay alive, all of us now have a way back to the Creator, all because He, Jesus hung, bled and died to get us back to the other side. Praise Him and shake yourself loose from all that binds.

HEALTH & COMMUNITY NEWS What Parents-To-Be Should Know About Prenatal Screening Tests (BPT) - If you're pregnant or hoping to become pregnant, recent headlines may have raised your awareness of birth defect risks. Contagious diseases like the Zika virus aren't the only factors that can affect the development of unborn babies. Fortunately, prenatal testing can do a lot to help relieve your fears - by providing information about your baby's overall health and development, including alerting you to potential chromosomal abnormalities. Here's what you should know about prenatal testing and what it can tell you about your baby's health before he or she is born. * Prenatal tests can be non-invasive - such as a blood test or ultrasound - or invasive, such as amniocentesis. * Non-invasive tests tend to be screening tests, meaning they're intended to identify

higher risks of certain conditions, such as chromosomal abnormalities like Down syndrome. * Invasive tests are usually used to diagnose or confirm a condition, and doctors often request them after a noninvasive screening test has raised a concern. Invasive diagnostic tests include amniocentesis, in which a sample of your amniotic fluid will be collected and tested; and chorionic villus sampling, which collects and tests a sample of the placenta. A non-invasive, targeted ultrasound exam can also be used as a diagnostic test. Prenatal tests aim to provide doctors and parents with information about the mother's health and the health of her baby, including the risk of the baby's blood type being incompatible with the mother,

Good To Go By Dean L. Jones, CPM Regularly going is good, even great, yet constipation can seem an awfully difficult subject to bring up, even though more than 4 million Americans suffer from having three or fewer bowel movements a week. Less than half of those who have this serious digestive disorder go to the doctor each year to seek a remedy. Long ago my grandmother's constipation led to colon cancer, which unfortunately occurred before the current advancements in cancer treatments. So, while watching an episode of Doctor Oz this week when a woman spoke of her infrequent and often times difficult bowel movements I related to her misery. Before Dr. Oz suggested a doctor's visit he immediately recommended that the sufferer review their respective eating habits as digestive health depends on what is being ingested. Part of this television discussion shared how processed sugaryfilled foodstuff items and beverages can worsen constipation. Firstly, drinking plain water makes it easier to pass waste from the bowels as it gets absorbed by the stool; however, too many people think that any liquid is the same as drinking water. In contrast, caffeine or alcohols are diuretics, the substances that pull more water out of the body than they provide, which coincidently were the very two liquids that my grandmother drank daily. Foodstuffs that are low in fiber such as ice cream, cookies, cakes, etc enable constipation. When I used to routinely eat yogurt, I learned that it contained an insoluble protein called casein, plus some hidden sugar. These ingredients slowed my digestion, where they were extending the time to dry and harden the waste in my intestines. So, you live and learn and some other ingredients to avoid for this reason include white or brown sugar, aspartame, sucralose, glucose, dextrose, sucralose, sorbitol, saccharin, Splenda, corn syr-

Jones up, cyclamate, sucrose, dextin, lactose, maltodextrin, ribose, Nutrasweet, high fructose corn syrup, crystalline powder, polysaccharides, monosaccharides, carob powder, and disaccharides. Although, there is at least one exception to ingesting sugar and that occurs in the case of honey that has fructose in it as a natural sugar. When it reaches the human colon it draws water into the stool and thereby becomes a natural laxative. Similarly, eating fresh whole fruits are high in fiber, which draws water into the waste making it easier to go, especially pears, watermelons (all melons), and berries. Processed sugar is the number one enemy of the bowel movement as it increases the concentration of bile acids and bacterial enzymes in the colon that can produce cancer-causing compounds and colon cancer. In view of that, it is always good to go and when nature does not call just know that it is not a disease, but it is a symptom that needs attention before it turns into something chronic, or more serious. the risk of gestational diabetes for the mother, and possible chromosomal abnormalities in the fetus. Depending on your risk factors - such as your age, an existing medical condition, or a history of chromosomal abnormalities in your family your doctor may recommend one or more types of prenatal testing. Today, non-invasive screening tests such as an ultrasound and a blood test can provide parents with a wealth of information. For example, the Harmony Prenatal Test, a simple non-invasive blood test, can help determine the risk of a trisomy defect. "Trisomy" means instead of a pair of every chromosome, a fetus has three of

one or more chromosomes. The affected chromosome determines the type of defect a baby may have. The test detects risks of trisomy 21 (Down syndrome), 18 (Edwards syndrome) and 13 (Patau syndrome), the most common types of trisomy defects, and it can be done for normal pregnancies, as well as ones considered high risk. A prenatal blood test for trisomies can be done as early as 10 weeks into your pregnancy, and can provide information about the risk of your baby having this kind of chromosomal abnormality. A recent New England Journal of Medicine study found the Harmony test provided more accurate results than traditional first-

trimester screening tests. If the blood test indicates a high-risk result, your doctor should recommend you follow up with additional testing. Lab-developed blood tests like the Harmony test are developed and validated by laboratories to address unmet medical needs when an FDAapproved test is not available. For more information on prenatal tests, visit the National Library of Medicine's website, www.nlm.nih.gov or the March of Dimes website, marchofdimes.org. To learn more about trisomies and the Harmony Prenatal Test, visit www.harmonytestusa.com. March is Trisomy Awareness Month.

BUSINESS & COMMUNITY NEWS Grocery Outlet is Newest Grocery Store to Open for Business in Compton COMPTON –Mayor Aja Brown and First District Councilmember Janna Zurita officially welcomed Grocery Outlet to the City of Compton Thursday. Occupying the site of former Fresh and Easy Neighborhood Market that closed last year, Grocery Outlet offers the same trusted brands such as Kraft, Kellogg’s, Tide, Tyson, Amy’s Kitchen, Naked Juice and many more with prices up to 60 percent off traditional supermarkets, plus a wide assortment of wine and natural and organic products at surprisingly low prices. “Today is a very special day in the city of Compton,” said Mayor Aja Brown. “We have as an administration focused on bringing healthier options to the Compton community. It’s truly important for us not only to have healthy accessible food but also to focus on providing economic opportunities to our residents. We are big proponents of and have passed policies for local hiring. I am pleased to say that Grocery Outlet has come in and already exceeded our expectations with over 85 percent local hires right here in our very own store.” Councilmember Janna Zurita added, “It is truly a great day in the City Compton! Grocery Outlet is new community partner but I’d like to say that last year before they even opened their doors they donated 2,000 bottles of water to my annual Walk for a Cure breast cancer awareness walk. There were 33 jobs created here and 25 of those jobs went to Compton residents, so thank you Grocery Outlet.” Before an audience that included Third District Councilmember Tana L. McCoy, members of the Compton and Latino Business Chambers and county, state and federal representatives, owners Liza and Lito Guerrero thanked their employees, the Mayor and city council and Compton residents for their help and input in getting the store open less than a year since the closing of Fresh and Easy. The Guerrero’s through Grocery Outlet donated $1,000 worth of food to the Salvation Army of Compton as well as $2,500 to Compton YouthBuild after partnering on a successful special Facebook fundraising campaign. To commemorate the grand opening of the first

Grocery Outlet location in Compton, the store’s owners invite the local community to attend their grand opening event on Saturday, March 19 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Free and open to the public, Grocery Outlet will offer a day of family-friendly fun and prizes including enjoy complimentary coffee and treats. The first 100 families will receive a Jamestown spiral sliced bone-in ham and the first 500 customers will receive a cool, eco-friendly reusable grocery bag. Customers will also have an opportunity to enter to win grand prizes such as $1,000 cash and free groceries for a year ($50 a month for a year). Customers may enter to win one of these grand prizes from March 19 through April 22. Winners will be announced at noon on Saturday, April 23, 2016, at the Compton Grocery Outlet. The opening of Grocery Outlet is a part of Mayor Brown’s Healthy Compton initiative, a community-based comprehensive approach to educating, empowering, and equipping Compton residents to lead healthier lives through the experience of healthy outcomes. Mayor Brown, along with a host of health and wellness partners throughout the City of Compton and surrounding communities are focused on enabling residents to build healthy habits. The Initiative is a result of Mayor’s Brown’s leadership and a grassroots community effort with local residents, business owners and stakeholders working together over the past two years. Grocery Outlet’s opening comes just one week into the Mayor’s city wide 90-Day Community Fitness Challenge. Grocery Outlet has more than 240 locations in California, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Pennsylvania, and Washington. The Compton store is the ninth of 19 new Grocery Outlet stores scheduled to open in the Orange County and Los Angeles areas by the end of 2016, and with these openings independent Grocery Outlet operators will create jobs for more than 600 people. Grocery Outlet is located at 2175 West Rosecrans Avenue in the city of Compton and is open daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. More information can be found at groceryoutlet.com.

NATIONAL/STATE & REGIONAL NEWS Gerri Warren, the Late Publisher of The San Diego Voice & Viewpoint, Enshrined By Stacy M. Brown From NNPA For those who knew Gerri Warren, it wasn’t unusual to see her walking around the offices of The San Diego Voice & Viewpoint or at community events with a smile that could light up the room. It was a smile that those close to her said grabbed attention, and for all the right reasons. “Ms. Warren wore many hats and she touched so many lives,” said Jackie Hampton, the publisher of The Mississippi Link and the enshrinement chair for the National Newspaper Publishers Association Gallery of Distinguished Black Publishers. On Thursday, March 10, Hampton was joined by NNPA Chair and Washington Informer Publisher Denise Rolark Barnes, NNPA President and CEO Dr. Benjamin Chavis and a host of others at Howard University to posthumously enshrine Warren, who rightly was installed next to other Black press icons. “This is where we have the opportunity to say to others that we must strive to emulate those like Gerri Warren as publishers,” said Dorothy Leavell, the publisher of the famed Chicago Crusader newspaper. “There are people who genuinely understand the importance of what we, as publishers, are doing. Gerri started as a teen and it wasn’t until her 30s that a light bulb went off that said ‘what you’re doing is important’ and she raised hell and demonstrated that we have a fantastic group of publishers in the black press,” Leavell said. RolarkBarnes called the occasion one of those sad, but happy, times in which the NNPA – a coalition of over 200 black newspaper publishers from around the country – can gather and take advantage of the opportunity to honor the legacy of one of its esteemed publishers. Addressing Chida WarrenDarby, Warren’s daughter who recently joined her father Dr. John E. Warren as co-publishers of her mother’s newspaper, RolarkBarnes said she was fond of the late publisher and proud of her legacy. “I knew your mom and dad who was on the City Council here in D.C. and when they decided to move to San Diego we lost two great people,” Rolark-Barnes said. Chavis, the longtime civil rights activist and icon, said he was grateful to have a chance to honor Warren. “She’s one of our leaders and this candle that we lit today for Gerri Warren will always live in our lives and long live the spirit and legacy of the Black press,” Chavis said. Family, friends and more than a dozen NNPA members and staffers joined Chida WarrenDarby, the co-publisher of The San Diego Voice and Viewpoint for the enshrinement ceremony dedicated to her mother and former publisher, the late Gerri Warren at Howard University in Washington, D.C. during the 2016 Black Press Week. (Roy Lewis/NNPA) dedicated to her mother and former publisher, the late Gerri Warren at Howard University in Washington, D.C. during the 2016 Black Press Week. (Roy Lewis/ NNPA) For more than five decades, The San Diego Voice & Viewpoint has reported on news from an African-American perspective. They’ve carved a special niche covering African-American communities of San Diego Coun-

ty, from small church gatherings to major political campaigns. As San Diego’s largest African-American publication, the paper has featured individuals and events in a comprehensive manner, while commentators have argued from different points of view in its lively op-ed pages. The Voice & Viewpoint has grown over the last decade to over 350 newsstands and outlets in

convenience stores and the paper can be found in all 89 zip codes of San Diego and has readership of more than 60,000. Warren-Darby, who became one of the youngest newspaper publishers in the country, has carried her mother’s torch in an award-winning manner. She said she was honored to be present as the NNPA enshrined Warren, who died in 2009. “She was a people person,” Warren-Darby

said. “She made time for people and she was never too busy to talk to anyone. She made sure that everyone knew they were important.” Chida Warren-Darby said it is her mother’s smile and her laugh that she often thinks of. “It was her secret weapon,” Warren-Darby said. “That infectious laugh and smile opened many a door and, yes, I’ve adopted that too.”

ART&ENTERTAINMENT NEWS ‘Nina’ Distributor, Bob Johnson: Casting Complaints Show Slavery’s Impact By Sandy Cohen LOS ANGELES (AP) — The distributor of the forthcoming film about Nina Simone says complaints about Zoe Saldana playing the singer reflect an interracial “pathology” established by slave owners. “It’s a tragic past that still exists today,” said Robert L. Johnson, head of the studio releasing “Nina” next month. Producers have been criticized since Saldana was cast in 2012 for choosing an actress who needed extensive makeup and prosthetics to achieve Simone’s dark skin and traditionally African features. “What people are expressing today is something that happened to us during slavery, when lightskinned Blacks were turned against dark-skinned Blacks and darkskinned Blacks were turned against light-skinned Blacks,” Johnson told The Associated Press in an interview Wednesday. “It’s been an unfortunate part of our DNA that was put in our heads by slave masters that is still present today, as you see by people talking about is somebody dark enough to play a role.” Saldana, who is Black, has a significantly lighter complexion than Simone. Saldana’s skin appears to have been darkened for the role, and she wears a prosthetic nose. Writing in The Atlantic, Ta

(Courtesy Photos) -Nehisi Coates said casting Saldana — star of such hits as “Avatar” and “Guardians of the Galaxy” — speaks to the economics of Hollywood. “Saldana is seen as bankable in a way that other Black women in her field are not,” he wrote in an article posted Tuesday. “It’s equally difficult to ignore the fact that, while it is hard for all women in Hollywood, it is particularly hard for Black women, and even harder for Black women who share the dark skin, broad nose and full lips of Nina Simone.” Johnson, founder of Black Entertainment Television (BET), lamented that Blacks have so internalized slavery’s notion of division by skin color. “That’s almost saying that dark-skinned black people have a special cross to bear than lightskinned,” he said. “That is exactly what was put on us, that’s the burden that was put on us by slave owners who sepa-

rated us by color.” Johnson noted that Rosa Parks was light-skinned: “You think Rosa Parks’ pain was less than Nina’s when she had to endure not sitting on a bus?” He acknowledged, though, that he’s heard similar complaints about skin tone before. “I had it when I was running BET. I’d get letters from people saying, ‘Why are all the women in the videos light-skinned women? Can’t there be any dark-skinned women?'” he recalled. “So it’s always been in Black life undercover. This issue about Zoe Saldana and Nina Simone just brought it out to the surface.” Johnson defended the use of makeup in “Nina,” saying, “Every film that I’ve ever seen made by mankind, people put makeup on.” Saldana has not commented publicly on the controversy. The Simone estate, which cooperated with production of the Oscarnominated documentary “What Happened, Miss Simone?” has urged fans to host listening parties rather than watch the new biopic. Representatives for the estate did not immediately respond to an AP request for comment Wednesday. Some Black actresses, including Queen Latifah and Paula Patton, are supporting “Nina,” saying they’ll reserve judgment until they see the film, which is set for release in theaters and ondemand on April 22.
