Congresswoman Maxine Waters Spoke Words of Wisdom and Power During the Black Business Association 2016 Salute to Black Women Business Conference Vendor Fair & Awards Luncheon By Gloria Zuurveen Editor-in-Chief LOS ANGELES— What a time? What a time? What a time we had on Saturday, March 19, 2015 from the break of day to the going down of the same at the L. A. Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles. Women, women and more women filled the banquet room with anticipation of hearing from the incomparable and one-of-a-kind politician that tells it like it is and this day was no difference. In times like
these, women, especially Black women need to hear and give positive feed back about their economic situation. On Saturday was that day at the Black Business Association (BBA) 2016 Salute to Black Women Business Conference Vendor Fair & Awards Luncheon in Celebration of National Women’s History Month. The BBA’s theme for the affair was “Working to Form a More Perfect Union: Honoring Women in Public Service and
Government. Thanks to Earl “Skip” Cooper, the vision and tenacity as well as the audacity to step out on faith and do what had never been done during a month of the year that is set aside to honor all women on a national scale, Cooper’s vision was to focus on Black women who have done ordinary and extraordinary, the ultimate criteria was that they have to be Black. The vision caught on in Los Angeles and now just about
David Herrera, President, American Integrated Service, Inc. Gives a Helping Hand to Neighborhood Youth Achievers in Watts By Gloria Zuurveen Editor-in-Chief When Michael Wainwright initially approached me to write about a man, a generous benefactor who, without hesitation, after witnessing first-hand the work that Wainwright and his limited staff have been doing to help youth succeed with academic and life skills in the Watts community for more than 10 years, I reluctantly said I’ll check it out. After my drive to his headquarters in Wilmington and being greeted by his friendly receptionist and then after only a few minutes of waiting, I was impressed, not just with the first impression from his office staff, but also with David Herrera, the man himself. Herrera, an Engineer, Chemist and President of American Integrated Services, Inc. (AIS) in Wilmington, California since 1998, is also a philanthropist who has a heart for the community; therefore, he puts his money where his mouth is by

EDITORIAL/OPINION Publisher’s Column
Dr. Gloria Zuurveen Founder /Owner/ Publisher/Photographer
Hello Readers , Happy Resurrection Day on Sunday. It is a blessed occasion to celebrate the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is a blessing that I had the opportunity to witness my grandson, Israel Matthews play Jesus Christ. I am a believer and I practice what I believe. I believe that you train up a child in the way that he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it just as the Bible says. I am a living witness to the fact that God changes hearts, souls and minds of his creation. It is through faith in his substitutionary death of His Son Jesus Christ that he has given us all a fair chance to live free from sin and shame the way we did before Jesus came into our hearts and made us new. Israel was able to do the part because he knows that Jesus is real and that for Him to live He has to live in his heart so when he was asked to play Jesus it was almost a natural because Jesus lives in him daily. It was a blessing but it was also a testimony to the goodness of the Lord and how when you are obedient to His will He will not let you down and Easter is all about renewal and beginning because of Jesus Christ ultimate sacrifice.

Do Black Organizations Really Have Our Backs? By James Clingman “Nonstop Aiding and Abetting in Corrupt Practices” While Black people are bogged down in shallow and meaningless political discourse, our vaunted Black organizations continue to be M.I.A. except for their time in front of the cameras with Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders. They say they cannot endorse candidates, but we all know that’s a sham. In an article written by Freddie Allen, of the National Newspaper Publishers Association, Marc Morial said the nine Black organizations that met with the candidates wanted to “provide to every candidate who is running for president of the United States, be they Republican or Democrat, the opportunity to hear from us on issues of civil rights, social justice, and economic justice in America, today.” Any real demands made on our behalf? Al Sharpton said, “For the first time in American history, we will watch a Black family leave the White House and we do not want to see the concerns of Blacks leave with them.” So that’s where our concerns have been hibernating for the past seven years; and all this time I thought Sharpton and the POTUS were taking care of them. And, I suppose to give comfort to Clinton and Sanders, Morial said the nine historic civil rights organizations represent tens of millions of Americans and that all of their organizations were “multicultural and multi-ethnic.” Multi-cultural and multiethnic? That’s strange; I thought they were Black or at least “colored.” Speaking of colored, let’s look at one of these “Black” multi-cultural/ethnic organizations. In case you missed the cryptic message at the beginning of this article, “Nonstop Aiding and Abetting in Corrupt Practices,” think about the NAACP. You may know it as the group whose answer to the Ferguson issue was to walk 130 miles to the Missouri Governor’s office, followed up by a 1,000 mile stroll from Selma to the steps of the U.S. Capitol in search of justice. Guess they didn’t find it when they got there. This is the group that practices outright hypocrisy by railing against voter suppression and voter ID laws, while accepting and even promoting those corrupt practices within their own ranks. More specifically, this is the group that has wreaked havoc in Ohio by conducting four elections for State President, two of which were legitimately won by Jocelyn Travis over
Sybil McNabb, and two of which were do-overs by the national office via its henchman, Gill Ford, to keep their chosen candidate, McNabb, in office. In the first corrupt election over which the national office presided, children were allowed to vote for McNabb—yes, children! In the second corrupt election, which just took place on March 12, 2016, again under national supervision, the same corrupt practice used in Cincinnati was used by Gill Ford in Columbus. He suspended Travis three days prior to the election, just as he did the Cincinnati president, whom he suspended the day before the election in an obvious effort to have his chosen candidate run unopposed. The NAACP’s “Nonstop Aiding and Abetting in Corrupt Practices” is shameful, especially in light of holding themselves up as the national champion for fairness in the voting process. Even more shameful is the fact that only a relative few members, among those who have actually seen these shenanigans take place, are willing to stand up against the NAACP’s corruption. The good news is that a group of members throughout Ohio have followed the lead of the Crittenden County (Arkansas) and Cincinnati branches by seeking and winning a Temporary Restraining Order against the NAACP’s continued interference in local elections. The results of the March 12th election are being held in abeyance by a Columbus, Ohio judge, who will conduct a hearing on April 7, 2016. You can be sure that all evidence of corruption, voter suppression, and electionrigging will be brought forth at that time. Aside from the obvious hypocrisy displayed by the national leadership of the NAACP, not only in this case but in several other branches across the country, their corrupt practices also point to a larger problem. So-called Black organizations like the NAACP, despite their implied social contract with Black folks, can be swayed, bought, rented, or leased with nothing expected in return except a few dollars under the table, a political photo-op, or a nice hotel suite. The NAACP needs to stop abusing its members’ rights before purporting to speak on our behalf. As for nine Black organizations suggesting they are the repository of Black power, here’s a question: If they have power, why after nearly eight years of a Black President are we, as cited in Morial’s State of Black America Report, worse off now and in “crisis”? As the heads of those organizations now intercede on our behalf, by meeting with presidential candidates, what would make us believe Blacks will get anything specific from the next administration?
Black-Owned Media Companies Should Push for More Political Ads By Roger Caldwell NNPA News Wire Columnist In the 2016 Florida political campaign, there are millions of advertising dollars in play and Black-owned media companies are the perfect vehicles for driving “get out the vote” efforts in the state. At the present time, Republicans in Florida control the state legislature, the governorship and the administration. With more Democrats than Republicans on the voter rolls in the state, it makes no sense that the GOP controls everything. During the 2008 and 2012 presidential campaign, President Obama won the Sunshine State in both elections with a Republican governor. That fact proves that moderates, women, and minorities can change the color of a state from red to blue. In order to make this happen in 2016, the Democratic Party in Florida must have strong leadership, and be totally committed to win. In 2014, many of the Black candidates running for office felt they received no support from the Democratic leadership, not even from Allison Tant, the chairperson of the Democratic Party. Thaddeus Hamilton, a Black man ran for Commissioner of Agriculture in Florida received over 2.3 million votes, and never received any financial support from the Florida Democratic Party. He was left off the first statewide Democratic candidate ballot box sheet, and many thought it was not a mistake. Racism in Florida politics is a reality in both parties, but over 95 percent of Black voters are Democratic. There are two Blackowned media associations in Florida, and they must work together. They must develop a united front with a plan to take to the national and statewide Democratic Party. The Florida Association of Black Owned Media Inc., which celebrated its 10th year in December 2015, and the newly formed Black Owned Media Alliance in southern Florida are the two Blackowned media associations in Florida. African Americans make up 16 percent of the Florida population, and 2.5 million Blacks are registered to vote in 2016. These Black media organizations should be helping to organize and register another 250,000 Black voters for the 2016 elec-
tion. In order to make this happen, the Democratic Party should be spending money with the Black media to educate the Black community in Florida about the different elections, and what they mean. In this critical election year, the Black owned media groups in Florida must collaborate and put pressure on the national and local Democratic Party to not ignore our vote and community. But, at this time, there are too many Black organizations in Florida such as the Urban League, the NAACP, Nation of Islam, and the Black Churches that appear lethargic and not excited about the election. They are not mobilizing and educating our community, and the Black media is not endorsing candidates and holding them accountable to their promises and platforms. As local candidates see the Black media more engaged in the voting process, they will spend more advertising dollars with the Black media in Florida. During a media symposium in South Florida last year, Eric Knowles, the president of the Miami-Dade Chamber of Commerce said that only 3 percent or $2.24 billion out of $75 billion spent on television, magazines, newspapers, and radio advertising was spent on media focused specifically on the Black audience. Knowles said that, “One reason [major advertisers] don’t care about us is because we’re going to spend our money in their businesses anyway.” Many of the leaders in the Black-owned media groups are beginning to talk about boycotting, if the major advertisers do not spend more money in our communities. Black-owned media companies in Florida for the first time are joining forces and are reaching out to the advertising community to get a larger piece of the pie as a united front. Those business should take the same action when it comes to dealing with the Democratic Party, locally and nationally. He is the man who since who has been setting standards of excellence and providing environmental services in five strategicallylocated offices. The company speaks volume with its motto, “The environmental service leader since 1998”. AIS has been leading in the field of offering comprehensive environmental solutions through construction, remediation, demolition, abatement, industrial services, emergency response and hazardous waste transportation as a licensed contractor and certified Minority Business Enterprise. When I finally agreed to interview Herrera, I could see the pride and joy he has for AIS and his 250 employees. Having worked on one demolition project such as the Great Western Forum in Inglewood, he became

The basketball court is housed in a huge warehouse room at AIS headquarters along with an entire fitness room for his employees to use when they want to. Herrera talked about how important education is and how important the work Wainwright is doing for the youth so whatever he can do to help out he will do it. Herrera, a native of New Mexico, started from humble beginnings. He said that education is the great equalizer. He should know as he graduated from the University of Colorado and is now an Engineer and a Chemist. His son, Isaac and his daughter, Sophia currently attend the same university that gave their father a chance to get ahead and to be the leader he is today. His wife Linda is a Physician Assistant who graduated from University of Southern California Medical School. Herrera reputation precedes him in Watts and the community of contracting. Herrera said, “Wainwright is the one who should be interviewed and acknowledged because of all the good he is doing for the youth in the Watts community.” He said there should be many others
Another one of Herrera’s project is that of serving in the community of Watts as the environmental contractor for the Jordan Down redevelopment project. Jacqueline Jones, a 15 year resident of Jordan
Down, who is employed with Anderson Environmental and has worked with Herrera, said she is grateful for having been given a chance and opportunity to work for AIS. She said about Herrera, “ He is a nice, understanding and believing person who gave me a chance.” She said because of my job as an environmental specialist she can now help give her girls a better life. Jones said when she first heard about the tearing down and rebuilding of Jordan Down, she said, “I am going to work on that project.” She did and she has been moving forward to show others that with a lot of hard work they too can succeed. Thanks to Herrera and his generous philanthropic outreach to organizations like NYA to help students graduate and fulfill their educational dreams so that they will succeed just as Jones has because of a man like Herrera, President of AIS. By Israel Matthews Contributing Writer Hello Readers, Thank you for asking about Izzy’s Column. We are back and I hope you are ready to hear some good news. Michael is going to talk to you about how much fun he had playing Jesus in his school musical. Michael loves school and he loves acting. Michael loved the Easter Musical that the school put on every year. This year they chose him to play Jesus. Michael had a lot of fun and he took it very seriously. It was a life changing experience for him. He said he was a little afraid when they were lifting him up on the big wooden cross to show how the crucifixion was. Michael said that he learned a lot

about the crucifixion like for instance, the triumphant entry, the repented and un-repented thieves and the resurrection of Je-
the community. “There is no doubt in my military mind that David and his army once given an assignment will complete it, secure the compound and leave the American flag flying high,” said Hines about Herrera and his team at AIS. According to Kenny Herrera of Southern California Edison, “AIS knows the value of safety and makes it a high priority, as demonstrated by their excellent safety track record of no safety incidents. The commitment to safety starts under the leadership of David Herrera. David has dedicated the time and resources to identify potential risks and perform the right measures of communications and mitigation measures to minimize

HEALTH & COMMUNITY NEWS Digital Mammography May Also Reveal Heart Disease Risk By Marilyn Larkin Reuters Health Mammograms performed to check the health of the breasts could also give clues to the health of the heart, researchers say. That’s because the amount of calcium in the arteries of the breast, which can be seen on a digital mammogram, seems to reflect the amount of calcium in the coronary arteries, which supply blood to the heart. Although women are commonly screened for breast cancer with mammography, there is no routine screening test for heart disease. Calcium in the coronary arteries is known to be an early sign of heart disease. Finding a link between calcium in the breast arteries and calcium in the cor-
onary arteries is a reason to “pay attention,” study coauthor Dr. Jagat Narula from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City told Reuters Health by email. Narula and colleagues will report their findings April 3 at the American College of Cardiology annual scientific session in Chicago as well as in JACC: Cardiovascular Imaging. For the study, the Mount Sinai team analyzed heart disease risk factors, such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, high blood sugar and smoking, in 292 women who underwent both digital mammography and a chest computed tomography (CT) scan. They found that 42.5 percent of the women had calcium in their breast arteries, as
Pre-Diabetes By Dean L. Jones, CPM More than 86 million Americans have Prediabetes, meaning that the body's blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not to the levels to be diagnosed with diabetes. Fortunately pre-diabetes can be reversed through lifestyle changes such as increased physical activity and weight loss, thereby reducing the chance of developing type-2 diabetes. To know if you are prediabetes complete the following quiz shared by the web site www.doihaveprediabetes.or g. Age: Less than 40 years (0 points); 40 - 49 years (1 point); 50 - 59 years (2 points); 60 years or older (3 points). Man or Woman: Man (1 point); Woman (0 points). If you are a Woman, have you ever been diagnosed with gestational diabetes? Yes (1 point) (0 points). Do you have a mother, father, sister, brother with diabetes? shown by digital mammography. Those women were significantly older and had more high blood pressure and chronic kidney disease compared with women who didn’t have breast arterial calcium. Coronary artery calcium, as shown in the CT scans, was noted in 47.5 percent of the women, who were also significantly older and had more high blood pressure, chronic kidney disease and diabetes compared with the women who didn’t have coronary artery calcium. Subsequent analyses revealed that the presence of breast arterial calcium was about 70 percent accurate overall in predicting the presence of calcium in the coronary arteries. Further, it did at least as well, and in some cases better, than standard risk predictors at identifying women at high risk of heart disease. Senior author Dr. Laura Margolies told Reuters
Health by email that after digital mammography, “Women should ask their radiologists if there was any calcification in their breast arteries. This information can then be given to their primary care doctors to be used in conjunction with standard risk factors to determine if further evaluation (or treatment) would be of benefit.” She also noted that seeing images of calcification in the arteries in the breast could be “the strongest motivator for a woman to take action to reduce the chances of developing clinically significant cardiovascular disease.” Dr. Margolies pointed out that there is always the possibility of so-called false positives. “Not all breast arterial calcification is indicative of significant cardiovascular disease. And people who are already being treated for cardio-
vascular disease might not derive any further benefit from knowing that the arteries in the breast are calcified, too.” Commenting by email, Dr. Joan Brem, Director of the Breast Imaging and Interventional Center at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., said, “This study demonstrates that accurate cardiovascular risk can be determined by evaluating the extent of calcification in blood vessels seen on digital mammograms, without the use of any additional radiation or risk. These exciting findings will allow women to be screened for the two most frequent life-threatening diseases at once - breast cancer and cardiovascular disease - (and allow) for determination of cardiovascular risk in a large population of women who might otherwise not get this potentially life-saving information.”

CBM Staff Last Tuesday, the California Assembly Committee on Jobs, Economic Development and the Economy held an oversight hearing on the Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development, also known as GoBiz. According to the committee agenda, five years have passed since the office was created. Lawmakers were eager to hear progress. While many presenters applauded the efforts of GoBiz, the hearing hit a sour note when California Black Chamber of Commerce President Aubrey Stone described the bleak situation of AfricanAmerican business in the state. Stone said Black businesses employ less than two people per company and that these numbers are a reflection of the African-American unemployment rate, which is twice the state’s average. Stone also told attendees that no one from GoBiz had ever contacted him to discuss the Black business climate. “I have had no official contact from anyone from these agencies that are dedicated to economic development,” said Stone. “I recommend the formation of some type of review panel to find ways to reduce this embarrassing economic gap that currently exists.” In response, GoBiz’s Executive Director of Infrastructure and Economic Development Teveia Barnes apologized for not reaching out to Stone prior to the committee hearing. After Barnes’ apology, some lawmakers on the committee asked follow-up ques-

tions about the agency’s relationship with Asian and Hispanic chambers of commerce. GoBiz’s small business advocate Jesse Torres responded that he knew and had a relationship with other groups. Torres’ admission sparked criticism, although he promised to make a better effort to connect with the chamber in the future. “I am disappointed … I don’t see how this is rocket science,” said Assemblymember Mike Gipson (DCarson) expressing concern. “You just said a moment ago that you gather chambers together to have a dialogue and conversation.” Clearly frustrated with GoBiz’s responses, Gipson stressed his disappointment that Barnes was just meeting with the Black Chamber for the first time. Gipson also wants to check in with the banking committee to determine why some banks aren’t participating in lending programs. “You are right. I should have met Mr. Stone be-
fore today,” said Barnes. “We have already made arrangements to get together and continue our conversation.” Committee Vice-Chair Young Kim (R-Fullerton) closed the hearing on a more positive note, comparing the committee hearing to her experiences as a mother. She said from time she has to sit down with her children to tell them they are doing a great job, but ask what more can be done? “That is how I see what this hearing was today” said Kim. “ I know you were already doing the work and a good job, but we needed to see how you can do better.” The three-hour hearing mainly focused on small business assistance, including the Offices of the Small Business Advocate, International Trade and Foreign Investment and the Small Business Finance Center. The committee requested a follow-up hearing with GoBiz. As of press time no date has been set.

If he knew that he would be smiling down from heaven.” Pinkney’s career in politics began four years before he started the BAPAC, which has grown to 50 chapters around the state. Pinkney led Gov. Even though Lyons was blessed with a great upbringing, she was a very shy child and she attributes acting to helping her come out of her shyness and modeling helped her become more feminine. In the 90s her manager, Maynard Virgil, was a producer on Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. In 2011, she began working at Barbizon of Hollywood and in a short time got promoted to Executive Barbizon of Manhattan.
