Chef Marilyn Celebrates 25 Years of Serving the Community By Gloria Zuurveen Editor-in-Chief “We fall down but we get up 25 years and still standing by the Grace of God.” Chef Marilyn LOS ANGELES—The quote printing on the front of tshirts worn by all of Chef Marilyn’s staff and volunteers on Wednesday, March 25 speaks volume to her perseverance in the face of trials and tribulation. Chef Marilyn Cole, known to the community for these last 25 years as simply, “Chef Marilyn”, has indeed demonstrated her commitment to excellence in bringing the community of Los Angeles affordable downhome cooked meals daily. On this day, in collaboration with Parent Action Coalition for Education (P.A.C.E.), a nonprofit organization founded by Gloria Zuurveen who is the Founder/Owner and Publisher of PACE NEWS, to help youth learn the art and skills of journalism through the PACE Journalism Education Enrichment Program (J.E.E.P.) which is currently being taught at the Grace Hopper STEM Academy middle school located in Inglewood, Chef Marilyn fed hundreds in the community at the low cost of only 99cents for each entrée of mouthwatering soul food served. Proceeds will be donated to the PACE Journalism Education Enrichment Program. One customer named Jean was in line and she had been there for hours before Chef Marilyn’s open her doors for the day long event. Jean said she has been coming to Chef Marilyn for over 15 years and she comes because the food is so good. Francis Scott, another customer, said out of all her 28 years she has lived in Los Angeles she has been coming to Chef Marilyn and she says the community should support her be-

cause she gives back to the community. Richard Lloyd Brown Jr. did not hesitate to talk about how he loves Chef Marilyn and that he was usually the first one in the line but he was beat on this special day by two people. He started naming off all the different food he enjoy at Chef Marilyn. He said he loves her turkey meatloaf, her smothered chicken with gravy and rice, her macaroni and her cheese cake. Chef Marilyn took time away from the kitchen to come out and greet those who were waiting in the long line for her delicious entrees. She said, “I just love to do it.” “The fact that I can do something and people enjoy it, that’s rewarding in itself.” As Chef Marilyn talked with CBS 2 reporter, Kaj Goldberg, she kept on giving God the glory for sustaining her all these years. Some people brought their lounge chairs in preparation for the long wait. Karen Waters, daughter of Congresswoman Maxine Waters, were on hand to personally give commendation from her mother who could not be there because of business in Washington, D.C. Mike Davis, from the Los Angeles Department of Public Works came by to say congratulation and Congresswoman Karen Bass sent a representative also. Councilmember Bernard Parks came by to show his admiration for Chef Marilyn’s tenacity and strength to keep on going forward. For this 25th anniversary Chef Marilyn brought out the DJ and the free photo booth so everyone could have their pitcher taken either with Chef Marilyn or alone. It was a time to celebrate and she threw a party to remember and the 15 young ladies from Grace Hopper STEM Please see Chef, page 7

EDITORIAL/OPINION Pressuring Us Towards War

Publisher’s Column By Bill Fletcher, Jr.

(NNPA) I never cease to be surprised by the racist audacity of the Republicans in Congress. In clear violation of international protocol, they arranged for Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu to speak before Congress. The established practice has been that this is done always in consultation with the Executive Branch. This time the Republicans decided to snub that branch.

Hello Everyone, This month has been a month to celebrate women all over the world. It is the time we take the time to acknowledge all that women mean to us and the world. Just like James Brown said, “This world wouldn’t be nothing without a woman or a girl”, so too our communities would not be nothing with a woman or a girl so we are to celebrate women all over for the rest of this month. God and his wisdom knew what He was doing when he made woman from man and gave her a rightful place to dwell and to tell the story about the Messiah when He was risen. It was a woman who carried the message that He, Jesus had risen to save us from our sin. It was and is women who give substance to families when men decides that they can’t take it anymore. It is women who makes the difference and we are to celebrate her for what she has done and continues to do for the whole world. Praise God for women not just in the month of March but all year long.

Wonders never cease. Forty-seven Republican Senators then signed onto one of the strangest letters in the history of international relations. The letter is addressed to the leadership of Iran and, in essence, says that whatever agreement Iran comes to with the Obama administration will be voided by the next President of the United States. This is remarkable on so many levels, not the least being that no agreement has been reached–at the time of this writing–and that the Republicans are telling another country that there is no point in their negotiating with the incumbent administration. Like many people, I have been curious as to whether these Senators actually broke a law. I am hoping that this can be quickly clarified. Deciding that they are appendages of the Israeli state instead of representatives of the people of the United States, the Republicans are suggesting that if Iran does not surrender to the terms established by Israel that there will be war. Yes, Netanyahu and his sycophants in Congress do not use the term “war.” They speak of increasing sanctions and other pressure, but most knowledgeable observers recognize that the intent is to create a military crisis that will result in

actions being taken by the United States against Iran. The results would probably be catastrophic. Let us all remember that it was Prime Minister Netanyahu who sought to assure the people of the USA that by attacking Iraq in 2003 that it would change the region for the better. Netanyahu was, of course, half right: the region has changed. He got the second part wrong, however: it changed for the worse, with the spread of Al Qaeda and, more recently, the Islamic State, and with the corresponding instability. There are questions that need to be asked of these Republican members of Congress. Let’s start with the matter of war. Are they prepared for yet another war? These are the same people who are insisting on cutting the budget and not taxing the rich, so where do the resources come from for a war? And, of course, what happens if the Iranians, attacked by the US and Israel, shut the Straits of Hormuz where so much of the world’s oil travels? What is the Republican answer? The answer for the Republicans seems to always be the same. Bully until you win…or until someone stands firm…and then start alleging anything that will discredit that government or social movement as supposedly standing in the way of peace. The longer that this goes on, the more that this feels like we are living George Orwell’s “1984”, where there is eternal war and that eternal war is considered peace. Between Barack and a Hard Place By James Clingman The “experiment” that featured a Black man in the White house is on the downside now. Folks in the Obama administration are busy looking for their next job and jumping ship faster than rats. But you can’t blame them; that’s the way it is in politics. You ride your horse as long as you can and then you find a new horse. That’s just what folks in Presidential administrations do. The question is: What horse will Black folks ride now?

It’s very uncomfortable being between Barack and a hard place. To whom will we turn? Will Hillary help us? Will one of the Republican candidates help us? Maybe Doctor Ben will win and come to our rescue. Dr Ben What are Black folks to do in 2016 as we now find ourselves wedged between Barack and a hard place with no wiggle room? Maybe we could “apologize” to Hillary for abandoning her in 2008; maybe we could do a public mea culpa to the Republicans. After all, we need someone to turn to now, right?

With Barack, came new line-dances at the clubsline dance, new phrases, and new “hope” that would finally move Black people to the front of the line for a “change.” We were large and in charge, big-ballers and shot-callers, cool and stylish, but we soon found that we were not really running anything. Having bet the farm on our horse, we now look on in agony as he comes down the home stretch. We want to move the finish line a bit farther down the track because we don’t yet have the victory, and it looks like we’re not going to get it. All we can hope for now is just a little more euphoria before November 2016. rock Right now many Black people, “sheeple,” as some are called, are between Barack and hard place. We don’t know if we are pitching or catching. As that Richard Pryor movie asked, “Which way is up?” We invested nearly 100% of our political capital in our current President, thinking we would get a decent ROI (Return on Investment). Unless there is a drastic uptick in the next few months, our investment will be lost forever, because we know this experiment will not be done again for a long time.

Well here are a few thoughts: Maybe we can now turn to ourselves; maybe now we will fully understand the error of our ways and make appropriate change; maybe we will finally work together as a solid bloc to leverage our precious votes against the 2016 candidates; maybe we will understand that no matter who resides at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Black folks still have to be vigilant about our political and economic position in this country; and maybe, as we struggle to remove ourselves from between Barack and a hard place, at least a small percentage of us will organize around economic and political empowerment.

Between Barack and a hard place means that Black people, collectively, are now without a comfortable place to turn, without someone we can look to for hope and change, and without what we considered to be a foothold in politics. Being between Barack and a hard place is causing anxiety, doubt, and even fear among some of our people. Being between Barack and a hard place will make many of us revert back to our political ways by staying on the Democrat’s wagon because the Republicans ignore us and don’t like us anyway. We will rationalize our allegiance to the same party that takes us for granted, however. And some of us will opt out of the system altogether because we are so frustrated and angry at how the previous two terms went down.

The Barack experiment was cool. He sings like Al Greenal green, dances like the steppers in Chicago, shoots three-pointers on the court, plays golf with Alonzo Mourning, and even gets his preach on when speaking to Black audiences.Obama pulpit In other words, Barack could make us feel real good, so much so that we kicked back, relaxed, and waited for him to fix our problems, to speak on our behalf, and to give us the same deference he gives to other groups. Now, we find ourselves between Barack and a hard place— no turning room, very little breathing room, and much uncertainty about our future in the political arena. There will be a new sheriff in town in January 2017, and our guy will stand there with him or her to give congrats and well wishes right before he rides off into the sunset, back to Chicago, Hawaii, or wherever, to enjoy the fruit of his labor, and I do mean fruit. He and his family will be well taken care of, but most of our families will be in the same or worse condition, having been stuck between Barack and a hard place for eight years. What can we do? Glad you asked. Join the One Million Conscious Black Voters and Contributors. Just go to http:// www.iamoneofthemillion.com and sign up. Economic and political powers respond best to leverage. Local Businesses Get a Shot at $370 Million LAX Renovation Project Assemblywoman Autumn Burke’s office partnered with general contractor Hensel Phelps to reach small businesses with the skills necessary to renovate Terminal 7 at LAX. Dozens of local business owners converged on Inglewood City Hall last Thursday to meet with representatives from Hensel Phelps Construction, the general contractor leading the renovation of Terminal 7

pool of talent in the 62nd District. The client is going to get a better project. And because the timeline is so short, these jobs are ready now.” Hensel Phelps representatives connected with Burke’s office, which reached out to local businesses and chambers of commerce to get the word out. Several dozen businesses from the South Bay turned out to learn about the project. The $370

The forum was set up as a way for local businesses to network and market their skills to the project managers, who are looking to hire local companies to do everything from masonry and roofing to lighting and electrical work.“Any time you have a large project like this, it’s critical to hire locally,” Burke said. “Not just to keep the dollars local, but also because we have an amazing

million renovation will result in a new concourse, new ticketing lobbies, a new security screening checkpoint, a renovated baggage claim system, and more. “LAX is clearly on the move,” Burke said. “This project is just the latest in a long list of renovations and updates that are going to make LAX the world-class airport we deserve.” The project is scheduled for completion in December of 2017.

Tuskegee, Ala.; and Wiley College in Marshall, Texas. The agreements are the first between the state’s community colleges and institutions outside the state, according to The Sacramento Bee. “The California Community Colleges is working on multiple fronts to create avenues of opportunity for our students,” California Community Colleges Board of Governors President Geoffrey L. Baum said in a statement. “This agreement opens a new and streamlined transfer pathway for our students to some of the finest and

culturally diverse institutions of higher learning in the United States. I thank our nine partners for working with us to make it possible.” The new arrangement is also the first time that HBCUs have reached a transfer agreement with an entire community college system, according to the Bee, and HBCU representatives said they hope the model would be replicated elsewhere. The arrangement is a boon to HBCUs which have suffered falling enrollment in recent years due to the economic downturn, changes in federal policy and other factors. Representatives of the nine institutions hailed the initiative as “truly a dream come true” during the signing event in Sacramento on March 17, the Bee reported. California’s agreement supports a White House initiative led by Dr. George Cooper to strengthen and expand the capacity of HBCUs to provide quality higher education to students. “California community

college students and the nine participating schools will benefit immensely from the agreement,” Cooper said in a statement. “The schools will have an even larger pool of gifted students knocking on their doors and California community college students will be guaranteed transfer to four-year institutions with rich histories, traditions and track records of success.” Jovon Duke, 22, attended El Camino College in Torrance, Calif., and transferred to Fisk University in 2013 because of its small class sizes and friendly, supportive atmosphere. “Fisk is such a tightknitted community and Nashville is great,” the psychology and sociology major said in a statement. “I’ve had a lot of opportunities to take on leadership positions and have made many friends and close relationships with my professors. I love it here.” Source: Pasadena City College

We were delighted with a Fashion Show presented by Ladies Day Out, displaying beauty in a rich and colorful manner! The Fashion Show was intriguing and particularly most notable were the models themselves of African descent, whom possessed a level of intellect and acclaim to simply boast. I was entertained, quite impressed and proud of the beautiful statuesque conquerors, knowing the world is their run way while embracing their true worth. “The Sojourner, Ida B. Wells, Harriet Tubman, Dorothy Height, and Shirley Chisholms’ of modern times! “ I have been afforded many opportunities this month of March, honoring and giving recognition to women as a whole. The many contributions, their success and the journeys traveled to impact and serve the world is phenomenal. Ladies Day Out honored “A First” - Veronie SteeleSmall , the first County of L.A. Fire Dept. Battalion Chief. I admired from afar, the beautiful and young Afro-American woman who currently holds such a historically male dominant position. YES WE CAN! Veronie Steele- Small was very excited to share her story and encouraged other organizations to invite her to speak at forums, in an effort to support young women pursuing careers traditionally uncommon to women. The National Council of Negro Women-View Park Section was also honored. A monetary gift was presented to Dr. Helena Johnson for their dedication and continu-

Dazzle & Design by Linda Patterson, an event designer delighted us with the most spectacular and decorative “table design.” BJ Ruffin of Unlimited Solutions One, displayed beautiful hand bags. I was quite fond of “Shay’s Rags,” which many of her pieces were adorned on the run way. Fibi & Clo, signature bejeweled sandals are just “hot” for our great summer weather. And of heightened and significant interest was the winery presentation by “Mis En Bouteilles,” truly a very eccentrically and unique captivation of the most gorgeous art signified on wine bottles, gifted from a family with “Three generations of Passion For Wine.” A masterpiece indeed! The Woman having endured the greatest struggles of dehumanization, disregarded and deemed second class citizens, will never fall short to any measure. We are tenacious and undoubtedly capable of withstanding deliberate and cruel opposition. The Woman is the recipient of the world’s magnificence. The Woman, the nucleus in maintaining a civil and developed society. A gift by “Divine Design,” the Woman is God’s gracious gift to the world, a loving, strength - filled, wise and nurturing human. “We are Woman,” defined by greatness, and embracing our wonderful gifts to be shared with mother earth.

HEALTH & COMMUNITY NEWS Fresh and Easy Closing Its Doors in Compton Compton, CA - Fresh & Easy will close its location at 2175 W Rosecrans Ave on Central and Rosecrans Avenues in Compton by April 3. CEO Jim Keyes announced the company plans to sell its stores in a YouTube video posted Friday. The chain was bought out of bankruptcy by The Yucaipa Companies in 2013. The struggling Fresh & Easy chain is remaking itself to better compete in an increasingly crowded grocery landscape, closing 30 Southern California markets as it develops plans to roll out new store formats. In all, about 50 stores in California, Nevada and Arizona will be sold and are scheduled to close by April 3. That represents 30% of the

company's 167 stores. “Fresh & Easy will try to sell the stores, some in areas with few other shopping options, and will use the proceeds to finance new development, including a small convenience store emphasizing fresh food. The company will try to find new jobs inside Fresh & Easy for some of the roughly 650 employees at the stores, but there will be layoffs,” spokesman Brendan Wonnacott said. In addition to Compton, Fresh & Easy will also close locations in Arcadia, Azusa, Buena Park, Camarillo, Chino Hills, Corona, Costa Mesa, Hermosa Beach, Jurupa Valley, La Habra, La Mirada, Lakewood, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Newbury Park, Oak Park, Ontario, Oxnard, Pasade-

Neighborhood Market - Fresh & Easy is a chain of grocery stores that offers a simpler, more affordable way to buy groceries, headquartered in El Segundo, California. Since November 2013 it is owned by Yucaipa Companies. It was a subsidiary of Tesco, the world's third largest retailer, based in the United Kingdom. There were over

200 stores in Arizona, California, and Nevada by December 2012. The City of Compton, California covers approximately 10.2 square miles in Los Angeles County, California situated south of downtown Los Angeles. With a current population of almost 100,000 citizens, Compton is known as the “Hub City” because of its unique position in almost the exact geographical center of Los Angeles County, Compton is strategically located along the Alameda Corridor, a passageway of 25 percent of all U.S. waterborne international trade. Compton is rapidly emerging as a large industrial center in Los Angeles County for transit and distribution, business services, high technology, home and lifestyle products, metals, financial services, and textile manufacturing.

Global packaged food titans know that there is a far greater improved consumer conscientiousness to choose healthier items wherever possible, consequently, any food or beverage brand wanting to get purchased better at least portray the illusion that they are reducing the sugar and other toxic ingredients. Sacramento—Today, 9to5 California joins with other economic equality, poverty and child care advocates in the Stronger California Advocates Network, and with state legislators, to call for new policies that will help secure women’s economic empowerment in California, and benefit families and communities across the state. The network is calling for state policymakers to support a comprehensive agenda in the upcoming year to address women’s economic opportunity across multiple policy areas, including the following: • Reduce poverty and build assets; • Expand access to affordable, quality early childhood care and education; • Ensure fair pay and job opportunities;

Support

working

families. "These issues – reducing poverty, achieving fair pay, workplace flexibility, and access to child care and job training – are issues that 9to5 California members face every day. 9to5 looks forward to organizing with the Stronger California Advocates Network for this economic agenda that all California women and their families need and deserve," said Linda Meric, 9to5 National Executive Director. According to a policy paper issued today by the Stronger California Advocates Network, women comprise almost half the workforce in California, and are primary incomeearners in many families. However, many California women

work in jobs that pay low wages, lack basic labor protections, and have unpredictable and inflexible schedules. Continues Meric, “9to5 members in Los Angeles, Long Beach, San Jose and across the state will continue to lift their voices and take action to expand paid sick days for all California workers, increase the minimum wage, strengthen California equal pay laws, win predictable and flexible scheduling practices, and end wage theft and the CalWORKS family cap.” 9to5 Los Angeles member Nicole Baldonado says, “Together, 9to5 members are a powerful force, and we make our voices heard! I plan to continue fighting for change for my family and my community.”

Little League Star Mo’ne Davis Launches New Shoe Line to Assist Impoverished Girls By Courtney Jacobs From the AFRO Little League star Mo’ne Davis hopes to inspire young girls around the world yet again, but this time in a way that does not directly involve sports. Davis is partnering with the shoe company M4D3 and the “Because I am a Girl” initiative to create a new line of sneakers, with 15 percent of proceeds going to help impoverished girls around the world. “I never thought at the age of 13 I’d be a role model, but having young girls look up to me is pretty cool. If I can inspire them to reach their goals, that would be even cooler,” Davis said in a

Mo’ne Davis

statement. The sneakers are made with the same stitching as a baseball, and bear the message “Throw Like A Girl.” Davis shot to fame during last summer’s Little League World Series as the star pitcher for Philadelphia’s Taney Dragons. She became the first

girl to earn a win and pitch a shutout in the tournament’s history, and later appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated. “We are designing a shoe that represents who [Mo’ne] is; contemporary, spirited and athletic, but at the same time being very caring towards other girls and young women that are vulnerable around the world,” M4D3 ambassador Lisa Zbitnew said in a statement. Davis’ new footwear line is available for preorder on M4D3’s website. The Disney Channel is also in the process of producing a biopic of Davis entitled “Throw Like Mo.”

dren. The senior Jackson told reporters it was “a great morning” as he left a nearby hotel earlier in the morning to meet his son, according to NBC5.

“But a halfway house means he’s half way [home],” said Jackson. “I won’t be satisfied until he’s totally free.” Jackson Jr. reported to federal prison Oct. 29, 2013, after pleading guilty to illegal-

ly spending $750,000 in campaign funds on personal expenses such as furs and vacations. Initially sentenced to a term of up to 30 months in prison, Jackson was released this week, having completed about 17 months. Former U.S. Rep. Jackson will serve out the remainder of his term at the halfway house, two years after pleading guilty to spending $750,000 in campaign money on personal items. Jackson, who also underwent treatment for bipolar disorder at the Mayo Clinic shortly before his incarceration, reportedly shaved three months off his prison term by completing a substance abuse program and earning good

conduct credit. While some have speculated Jackson’s early release grew from his personal wealth and family name, Bureau of Prisons spokesman Edmond Ross told the Chicago Tribune that Jackson’s was not an example of special treatment. It has not been established how long Jackson will remain in transitional housing, however, according to Ross, inmates with strong family and community ties tend to move from halfway houses and into home monitoring, quickly. Jackson will spend three years on supervised release after he fulfills his prison term in September. A month after his term’s fulfillment, Jackson’s wife is scheduled to begin a one-year prison term as an accessory to illegal spending. The couple’s sentences were staggered because of their children.
