Actor Tony Todd Brings Jack Johnson to Life on Stage at UCLA Shoenberg Hall By Gloria Zuurveen Editor-in-Chief

LOS ANGELES—Tony Todd and the cast of characters including Diahnna Nicole Baxter (Mama), Eleen Hsu (The Wraith) and Kincaid Walker (The Siren), brought to life the spirit of Jack Johnson during the 90 minutes stage production of Ghost In The House held last Friday and Saturday evening at the UCLA Schoenberg Hall in Westwood. It was mesmerizing to witness such a magnificent performance by them all but Todd was truly the leading man and he never came up short. He was the epitome of Johnson in his superb acting ability. He painted a clear picture of the era and the time of the raw racism that Johnson pushed

back against with a dream that propelled him to be the greatest boxer of all times. In the audience were producers who were very impressed with the production. Marcy Gross, Producer, GrossWeston Productions, she was accompanied by her husband, retired Entertainment Business Manager, Edgar F, Gross. She said, “We loved the play. The singing was exceptional and the acting really terrific. The lead was out-standing and very convincing.” "Ghost in The House" is a remarkable, and heartbreaking, story - beautifully produced and acted. An entertaining and informative evening at the theatre. A "Must See" for all Americans - especially in this day and age. Why Black People Answer When Farrakhan Calls By George E. Curry via George Curry Media It’s time to give Minister Louis Farrakhan credit. When he issues a call for people to join him in the nation’s capital, Blacks show up. At least a million showed up for the Million Man March 20 years ago and at least two-thirds as many showed up for Saturday’s Justice or Else assembly on the National Mall. Without a doubt, Farrakhan-led events in Washington, D.C. attract more people than marches called jointly by all of the other civil rights leaders. And whenever Minister Louis Farrakhan is involved in a major event, there is always a controversy about numbers. In his speech at the Million Man March, people were fascinated by his fascination with numerology. In the aftermath of that event, the U.S Park Service made the ridiculous estimate that 400,000 people attended. But Boston University’s Center for Remote Sensing placed the figure between 655,000 to 1.1 million – more than twice as large as the 1963 March on Washington. Farrakhan manages to be a magnet while withstanding withering attacks. Consider a few recent headlines: * “Nation of Islam’s leader Louis Farrakhan: White People ‘deserve to die.'” * “Nation of Islam’s Louis Farrakhan: ‘We need to put the American flag down.'” * “Cancelled: Charleston Wants No Part of Farrakhan’s ‘Justice or Else’ Movement.” How is it that the most reviled Black man in America consistently attracts waves of people? African Americans trust Minister Farrakhan. Even if strongly disagreeing with some of his views and the well-known antipathy between the Nation of Islam (NOI) leader and Jews, Blacks know that he won’t ever sell them out for personal gain or any other reason. They are smart enough to discern that which should be applied to their lives and that which should be ignored. When Farrakhan suggested Saturday, for example, that Blacks should change their last name to throw off the yoke of White supremacy, many African Americans in the audience chuckled. But they cheered when he said, “We have a purchasing power of over 1 trillion dollars but in our reckless and wasteful spending habits we have not been able to pool our resources in a collective manner to build institutions and create jobs for our people. By strategically engaging in economic withdrawal we can begin putting power behind our demands and build a new and better reality.” For decades, many Blacks have admired their discipline but viewed the Nation of Islam as a small, Black supremacy group telling wild-eyed stories about UFOs and trips to and from outer space in spaceships.

More than any other NOI leader, Farrakhan has bridged the gulf between skeptical Christians and Nation of Islam followers, carefully repackaging his message to make it more palatable to non-Muslims. He refers to God and Allah interchangeably and knows and quotes the Bible better than most Christians. Instead of ridiculing Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as an integrationist, as he and others in the Nation of Islam have done in the past, Farrakhan now praises the slain civil rights leader, especially his call for economic empowerment. Although women and men don’t sit together in NOI mosques, he is trying to show a greater sensitivity to and appreciation for the contributions of women. “May I pause for a moment and say to women: Your language must change as to how you address yourselves,” he said Saturday. “You should never call another woman a ‘bitch. Get that word out of our language. No female is after a dog. Every female is after God.” Farrakhan continued, “Black men who like to use such words, pull it out of your tongue, before your tongue is pulled out of your head.” Although his views have not changed towards Black politicians, he now befriends a few, including Rep. Danny Davis (D-Ill.), who made arrangements for Farrakhan to hold Saturday’s rally at the foot of the capitol. But Farrakhan is better known for his scathing descriptions of Black lawmakers. Referring to then-Philadelphia Mayor Wilson Goode in 1985 following a deadly confrontation between Goode and the revolutionary group MOVE, Farrakhan said: “I say, Black people, whenever you put a Black man in office and that Black man betrays the best interest of those of us who put him there, I say take him out. “And if he doesn’t repent, brother and sister, men and women like this, we tar and feather them, we will hang them from the highest limb, we will chop off their heads and roll them down the streets, for the Black people of America are tired of Black leaders selling us out after we put them in office, working for our enemies, rather than working for ourselves.” That’s the old Farrakhan. The new and improved one comes up with titles such as “Justice or Else,” and then let others worry about what the “else” means. And like the McDonald’s commercial, Black people are declaring, “I’m lovin’ it.”

EDUCATION & COMMUNITY NEWS John Muir Jr. High School “1st Annual Reunion Picnic -2015” By Tamara G. Lewis LOS ANGELES—Oh, how beautiful a Sunday afternoon October 11,2015 where the alumnus of John Muir Jr. High School “ The Cougars,” surprisingly gathered in great numbers at Westchester Park in Los Angeles. With great pride the “Maroon and Gray” T-shirts displayed the school colors at John Muir Junior High School’s 1st Annual Reunion picnic. It is a well -known fact , John Muir Jr. High school has in past years out sourced its finest graduates to two of the most notable high schools in Los Angeles - Manual Arts and Crenshaw. Thus, coming home to John Muir Jr High’s 1st Annual Reunion was quite befitting with welcomed comradery and the epitome of celebration! There were all sorts of emotions stirred with folks laughing, hugging, screaming, and down right “Dancing a Jig!” It was a very pleasurable occasion. I observed great people embracing long lost friends, who once walked the hallways together at John Muir Jr. High and participated in school plays, lunch time football games, noon dances (sweat boxes), drill team and performing arts classes; studied for exams, eating greasy food at “Taco Tops,” on Vermont Ave. and often checking out Sear’s and Newberry’s stores to perhaps window shop. There was just an array of exciting histories and wonderful memories to reflect upon. The environment was

Michael’s Girlfriend By Israel Matthews Contributing Writer

Hello. This week Michael’s big adventure is that he has a girlfriend. Here is how it all happened one day at school. He was somewhat shy but he was not about to give up his opportunity to be with the prettiest girl in the school and she is also very smart. Listen up and learn how Michael gets to go on his first date with his new girlfriend. Michael was in his locker when a girl came up to him “Hey, so you wanna go to the dance?” she said. Michael knew the girl since second grade. Michael said “yes” because she was pretty cute. The dance was on Wednesday, the 21st of October and he was ready. The day had come where everybody was dressed up nice and Michael went to pick the girl up—oh, and her name is Stacy—at her home. She looked really pretty like always. They had a fun time. The end for today. Be blessed :)

HEALTH & COMMUNITY NEWS 7 Unlikely Foods That Sabotage Fat Loss (BPT) - The basic idea behind fat loss is simple: eat better, exercise more. However, hidden in this formula are numerous caveats and footnotes. No wonder there are so many books and television specials about the 100 different ways people are supposed to exercise and eat right. According to Becca Hurt, MS, RD, and program manager of Life Time Weight Loss at Life Time - The Healthy Way of Life Company, "one of the most confusing parts of dieting is the fact that many of the foods people think will help them lose weight actually pack on the pounds." Hurt notes there are enemies lurking in common foods that almost everyone eats or drinks. So, what's to be done? To help identify some of the most common weight-loss enemies, Hurt has provided a list of seven culprits everyone will

want to weed out of their diet. Coffee shop drinks Never mind the french fries and potato chips, Hurt says that liquid calories are more often one of the biggest downfalls when it comes to losing weight. For many, it starts with their morning coffee. While 1-2 cups of coffee with only cream added is no harm, the danger is in the sugar loaded, caramel-chocolate dieting disasters many people believe to be perfectly healthy because they ordered the non-fat options. "Not only do these drinks lead to a sugar rollercoaster and energy crashes, they may be loaded with as many as 500-plus calories," says Hurt. Skim milk "Only recently, Americans started to realize fat isn't always the bad guy," explains Hurt. "There is no difference in fat

1 in 3 American Adults By Dean L. Jones, CPM Dismally, a common disease in the USA is high blood pressure, which is medically described as hypertension. In essence, this disease causes blood to flow through blood vessels (arteries) at higher than normal pressures. About 70 million American adults have high blood pressure, or in other words 1 of every 3 adults is inflicted with this disease. Even worse, about 1 in 5 of American adults with high blood pressure is unaware that they have it. Moreover, having high blood pressure shows 7 of every 10 people experiencing their first heart attack has high blood pressure. In the same way, 8 of every 10 people having their first stroke have high blood pressure. Also combined with these current health reports is about 7 of every 10 people with chronic heart failure have high blood pressure, not to mention how kidney disease is also a major risk factor for high blood pressure. It is worth noting that black people (more black women than black men) develop high blood pressure more often than white people and other ethnic group members. Another statistic is that nearly 1 in 3 American adults have prehypertension, which represents the blood pressure numbers that are higher than normal, but not yet in the high blood pressure range. Medically, one of the primary underlying causes of high blood pressure is related to how the human body can produce too much insulin in response to eating a high carbohydrate diet, particularly foods that are heavy in processed sugar. Exercise is essential to lowering high blood pressure, nevertheless the common diet routinely claimed to be among the most effective for controlling hypertension includes fresh vegetables, fruits, lean protein, whole grains, low-fat dairy, and very low sodium content. Even though, today sodium is an outdated culprit to high blood pressure, but a much stronger

loss between diets with no-fat and full-fat dairy consumption, according to recent studies." In fact, Hurt notes that people often add sugar to enhance the taste of their skim milk, which quickly turns it into a decidedly unhealthy option. Pasta Yes, even whole grain pasta is stripped of beneficial nutrients, bleached and loaded with preservatives to make it more shelf-stable. Pasta portions can also be confusing. "A pasta meal should begin with a big salad, and the high protein meatballs should be larger than the portion of pasta," says Hurt. "Instead of spaghetti and meatballs, it should be meatballs with some spaghetti on the side." Reduced fat snacks For many, reduced fat, no fat and low fat labels on foods can be a green light to what they believe is guilt free snacking. The principle to remember here is not all calories are the same. "A 100-calorie pudding pack is not as healthy as 100-calories worth of almonds," explains Hurt. "Food that is naturally healthy doesn't have to have the

"no-fat" label." A handful of nuts, a few slices of full-fat cheese or some Greek yogurt are healthier options by far. Energy drinks For those looking to shed some fat, drinking one of these sugar-loaded bad-boys means putting the brakes on their body's fat burning process. Hurt adds that people should get no more than 5 percent of their calories from sugar and just one energy drink will put someone well over this limit. Sandwiches While many think ordering a sandwich is a diet-friendly alternative to a burger, consider this:

one sandwich has as many carbohydrates as a Kit-Kat bar! "Carbs are not a sustainable source of energy," says Hurt, "and are responsible for that sluggish, hungry feeling that leads many to skip workouts and snack more." The solution: ditch the bread and add a salad! Protein bars They might be marketed as the fat burning, muscle gaining snack, but don't be fooled. Heavily processed protein bars are loaded with sugars and carbohydrates. To get the necessary protein, Hurt suggests looking to nuts or animal sources such as meats or yogurt instead.

Dean L. Jones offender are processed sugars and/ or fructose. The old traditional dietary activity to ease hypertension centered on the reduction in salt, but current research shows the need to reduce the intake of heavily processed foodstuff containing sugar/ fructose. Ingesting too much processed sugar can bring about hypertension, thereby being a primary reason for the body's adverse insulin reaction stems from too much fructose, grains, and other sugar forming starchy carbohydrates. Processed sugar comes in all sorts of forms from table sugar, brown sugar, raw sugar, turbinado sugar, honey (even raw), maple sugar, corn sweetener, dextrose, glucose, fructose and any other word that ends in an "ose", barley malt, rice syrup, liquid cane sugar, concentrated fruit juice, etc. Processed sugar is a proven agitator in promoting more than 75 diseases, especially when the body becomes insulin resistant it is subjected to high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, and the like. BUSINESS & COMMUNITY NEWS L.A. Poll Reveals Many Black Angelenos Distrust Government By Madlen Grgodjaian From California Black Media Twenty three percent of Los Angeles County’s AfricanAmerican residents believe they can make a greater individual impact on their communities than local governments can, according to the results of a recent survey. Ben Winston, Senior Associate at Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research, posited a theory to explain the sentiment underlying the poll results. “I believe the AfricanAmerican community feels this way because they may have lost trust in their government,” Winston said. To share more details about the poll and its results, Vision for a Better Los Angeles

held a public town hall meeting at the Sophia Cathedral’s Huffington Center in Los Angeles on Oct. 8. During the meeting, panelists discussed the findings of the poll and pointed out ways individuals can become more involved in their communities. The panel of speakers and presenters included community leaders, citizens and government officials. During the event, organizers revealed results of the Sept. 14-24 poll conducted by national public opinion research firms Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research and American Viewpoint. President and Chief Executive Officer of the California Community Foundation, Antonia Hernandez, stated that the poll

The John Muir Jr. High reunion was simply a heartfelt great time, and truly like being back home. We are all looking forward to the very next time together! Tamara G. Lewis

was organized to get a better sense of how the people of L.A. feel about their community. “We have a shared desire to make the place we live in better,” he said. One thousand five hundred Angelenos from different ethnic and racial backgrounds participated in the online survey. Ten percent of the survey respondents were Black. Eighty percent of respondents said they want to get involved in their community to build a stronger L.A. County. When asked why people are not more involved in their communities, the most frequent response was: the lack of time. Assistant Managing Editor of Politics for the Los Angeles Times Christina Bellantoni and Director of the Unruh Institute of Politics of USC and Director of the CCF/USC Dornsife/ Los Angeles Times Poll Dan Schnur, analyzed the findings during the town hall. Schnur said although L.A. County residents are busy, they want to help their communities. “Angelenos need the reassurance that they can take time off their busy schedules to volunteer and they need to feel that they can trust their government,” he said. When respondents were

asked who in their community they trust, the overwhelming response of all the groups was that they did not trust their government. It’s likely, the panelists observed, that the increasing national distrust of the federal and state governments seems to be permeating downward to the local level as well. “Voters don’t trust their government, the public, and private or non-profit sector,” Schnur said. There were also significant differences between the way White and Black participants responded to the survey. Twenty six percent of African Americans said it’s up to the government to improve the local communities. In comparison, 41 percent of White participants believe government is responsible. Trust was a major discussion point amongst the attendees at the town hall. Speaker Marcenus Earl from Watts, said, “I see distrust between the Latino and Black communities and also between the people of color and law enforcement.” Second District County of L.A. Supervisor Mark RidleyThomas also attended. He told the audience if the government appealed more to people’s best interests, Angelenos would show

up naturally, creating a positive, reciprocal relationship. “Government has a responsibility to make itself more accessible and we have to access it,” said Thomas. “Nothing happens minus an investment.” The poll also found that the greatest concern for most Angelenos was traffic and congestion. For the Black community, issues such as safety and personal finances were also paramount concerns. Although the poll revealed that Blacks felt greater distress, respondents believe, overall, L.A. County is moving in the right direction. Results also showed that residents are optimistic about the future. “I see neighborhoods being revitalized in the most diverse city in the world,” Earl said. Hernandez of the California Community Foundation pledged to give a billion dollars over the next 10 years to help that optimism about the future becomes reality. “We can dwell on our differences or we can come together in a pledge to have an attitude about the place we live, to have compassion about our neighborhoods and to make my imperfect paradise, a little more perfect,” she said.

NEWS Few Signs of Improvement for NBA Star Odom After Collapse By Jane Ross (REUTERS)—Pro basketball and reality TV star Lamar Odom spent a third day hospitalized on Thursday, reportedly on life support following a series of strokes, after collapsing at a Nevada house of prostitution where authorities said he had been using cocaine. With family and friends at his bedside and fans praying for his recovery, the estranged husband of Khloe Kardashian was reported to be comatose and in critical condition after he was found unresponsive at the Love Ranch brothel on Tuesday.

Celebrity news outlets TMZ.com and "Entertainment Tonight" reported on Thursday that Odom's kidneys were failing and he has been placed on dialysis. Other outlets have said he had suffered several strokes, was breathing with the assistance of a ventilator and had only a 50-50 chance of recovery. Brothel staff told authorities Odom had used cocaine and as many as 10 tablets of a sexual performance-enhancing supplement during his four-day stay there, the Nye County Sheriff said. Farrakhan Outlines Next Steps After Million Man March Anniversary By James Wright From the AFRO.com Minister Louis Farrakhan told a crowd of 200 people that the Nation of Islam will team up with 100 Black Men, an influential national Black male organization, and reinvigorate local organizing committees (LOC) nationwide to move their agenda forward. The minister revealed his detailed plans on Oct. 11 at the Marriott Marquis in Northwest D.C., one day after the 20th Anniversary of the Million Man March on Oct. 10. “I didn’t create the march that happened yesterday, it was God,” Farrakhan said. “It was a peaceful event and there was no drinking, no smoking. It was a glimpse of heaven.” Farrakhan brushed aside comments that the success of the 1995 Million Man March and the Oct. 10 march designates him as the No. 1 Black leader in America. “I am not the great leader,” he said, referring to God. “I am the servant of the great leader.” Farrakhan said that his organization, along with 100 Black Men and the other committees will work to develop nine ministries in the Black community to help improve people’s lives. Those major ministries are in the fields of education, justice, health and human services, agriculture, science and technology, trade and commerce, and arts and culture. Another ministry will focus on the spiritual development of people of color that will be led by ministers called by their deities. Farrakhan talked specifics in his plan, such as the need for Blacks to buy more real estate and take control of the education system in their communities. “You cannot have economic development without ownership of land,” he said. “We should develop a curriculum that we control. Black people are the only race on the face of the earth that is educated by others.” Regarding politics, Farrakhan said that Blacks should be very selective whom they vote for in next year’s presidential election. “If they aren’t talking about justice, you should hold your vote,” he said. “You should not register as a Democrat. You should not register as a Republican, but as an independent.” Farrakhan said that Blacks should leverage their votes for concrete resources and policies that will benefit the race. “As we get stronger, we should form our own political party,” he said. Farrakhan said that in the past, membership in local organiz-

Minister Louis Farrakhan speaks during a rally to mark the 20th anniversary of the Million Man March, on Capitol Hill, on Saturday, Oct. 10, 2015, in Washington. (AP Photo/Evan Vucci) steps -after-million-man-marchanniversary/ ing committees were mainly members of the Nation of Islam but that won’t be the case going forward. “We need to grow beyond our group,” he said. “The LOCs should be strengthened with people who have skills in organizing. Those of you skilled in organizing need to teach it and show us how to do it.” Thomas Dortch, chairman emeritus of 100 Black Men, said the organization is happy to work with the Nation of Islam and the committees. “Name me one other person who can send out a call and have 100,000 or one million respond,” Dortch said. Dortch said his organization will recruit 10,000 men and 10,000 women to work on improving the Black community, just what Farrakhan called for in his speech on Oct. 10. One of the criticisms leveled by some Black leaders against the 1995 Million Man March was that there was no legislative program to present to the federal government or the individual states. Both Farrakhan and Dortch said that the 1995 march was about Black men atoning for their sins and talking responsibility for their families and communities. Following the 1995 march, Farrakhan called for an independent black political movement and a separate, self-sustaining black economy as well as demanded the U.S. government pay reparations to descendants of slaves. In moving forward with action this go around, Farrakhan gave a free copy of the The National Agenda: Public Policy Issues, Analyses, and Programming Plan of Action for 2000- 2008 to attendees at the post-March meeting at the Marriott Marquis in Northwest D.C. on Oct. 11. “You have the power to bring about the change you desire,” he told the audience members.

rumored to have struggled with substance abuse, and he was suspended during the 2000-2001 season for violating the National Basketball Association's anti-drug policy. "Entertainment Tonight" said Odom had briefly fluttered open his eyes on Wednesday night and may have squeezed the hand of Khloe Kardashian's sister, Kim Kardashian, who was among those at the hospital. The Sunrise Hospital & Medical Center in Las Vegas, where Odom, 35, was being treated, has declined to comment on his condition, citing patient confidentiality. Odom's estranged father, Joe Odom, the athlete's two children from a previous relationship, and his ex-girlfriend were also photographed entering the hospital. Odom split with Kardashian, 31, in 2013 after a whirlwind romance and marriage that was captured on the television show "Keeping Up with the Kardashi-

ans" and its spinoff series "Khloe & Lamar." Although the couple signed divorce papers in July, a Los Angeles Superior Court spokeswoman said the divorce has yet to be finalized and they remain legally married. People magazine, citing a source close to the family, said on Thursday that Khloe Kardashian was given the task of making medical decisions about Odom's treatment but was "overwhelmed" by the unexpected responsibility. "She had been thinking of him as an ex, so to find out that, 'No, you have to do this,' well that's really hard for her," the magazine quoted the source as saying. Despite Odom's 14 seasons with the NBA, including two championships with the Los Angeles Lakers, U.S. media have largely focused this week on his brief membership in the most famous family on reality television. ESPN sportscaster Scott Van Pelt took issue with the celebrity-

skewed coverage, noting Odom's accomplishments as a multiple NBA champion and beloved teammate. "I understand not everyone watches sports, but 'Kardashian reality star?' His name is Lamar Odom, and we knew it, long before he got married on a TV show we don't watch," Van Pelt said on his "SportsCenter" show on Wednesday. Kardashian's mother, Kris Jenner, posted a photo of Odom in his Lakers uniform on her Instagram account, asking fans to "please pray for Lamar #ourfighter." Currently a free agent, Odom last played for the Los Angeles Clippers during the 20122013 season and is no longer attached to any NBA team. NATIONAL/STATE & REGIONAL NEWS Clinton to 'Look Hard' at Julian Castro as Possible VP Pick Democratic presidential contender Hillary Clinton won the backing of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro on Thursday and said she would seriously consider making the rising Hispanic leader her running mate if she wins her party's nomination. Clinton and the other Democrats in the November 2016 race for the White House have pushed hard for support among Hispanics, a fast-growing and critical voting bloc that has moved toward Democrats in recent elections as Republicans have stymied comprehensive immigra-

tion reform in Congress and disparaged Mexican immigrants on the campaign trail. "I am going to look really hard at him for anything, because that's how good he is," Clinton said at a U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce meeting in San Antonio, Texas, when asked if Castro might be her vice presidential pick. Appearing with Clinton at a later "Latinos for Hillary" rally, Castro said he has long respected her ability to appeal to people of all backgrounds. Through the years she has always, always been there for us,

Democratic U.S. presidential candidate Hillary Clinton waves with U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Julian Castro at her side during a 'Latinos for Hillary' rally in San Antonio, Texas October 15, 2015. Castro endorsed Clinton's campaign for president. REUTERS/DARREN ABATE and today we're here for her," said Castro, who is the second member of President Barack Obama's Cabinet to endorse Clinton along with Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. Clinton said she was "thrilled" to win the backing of Castro, a former mayor of San Antonio. Castro's twin brother Joaquin, a U.S. congressman, already endorsed Clinton and campaigned with her in Nevada.

While the endorsement was not a surprise, the timing was a boost for Clinton. It came on the heels of a strong debate performance on Tuesday night and while Vice President Joe Biden is still pondering a possible run for the White House. Clinton condemned the hardline comments about immigration that have been prominent in the Republican presidential race,

particularly by Donald Trump, who has maintained a comfortable edge in opinion polls among those identifying themselves as Republicans. "If you listen to all of them, they all to a degree or so sound like him, they just don't have the pizzazz or the hair, but they are making a lot of the same unfortunate points in their candidacies," Clinton said.
