EDITORIAL/OPINION Publisher’s Column

Dr. Gloria Zuurveen Founder /Owner/ Publisher/Photographer Photo by Ian Foxx

Hello Everyone, There is no place like home. I am, by the grace and mercy of God going home this week to Senatobia, Mississippi to celebrate with my family the 85th birthday of my darling Aunt Juanita Walker -Ross. It was Aunt Juanita who gave me a sense of being somebody. It was Aunt Juanita who in her early 20s owned her own café. It was called the Blue Flame Café and it was one of the most popular spots during segregation. When workers would get off from chopping and picking cotton, or working other jobs on the farms, it was the Blue Flame Café that gave them fame. It was the place where I use to hear Rufus Thomas “Walk the Dog” and “Do the Funky Chicken” on the jukebox. Aunt Juanita was always an entrepreneur. She always worked for herself and I lived with her and learned the value to business ownership. To still have this opportunity to celebrate and hear her history is a blessing and I pray God she will have a very blessed celebration thanks to Annette, Melvin and Larry, her three children who organized this family gathering. I will also cover the Southern Heritage Classic between Tennessee State and Jackson State. See you next week. Be Blessed.

‘Angry Black’ Gunmen By Julianne Malveaux NNPA Columnist Alison Parker, a rookie news reporter at WDJB, the Roanoke, Va. CBS affiliate, had turned 24 just days before she was murdered on August 26. Her work partner, cameraman Adam Ward, was about to move to Charlotte, N.C. because his fiancé, a producer at WDJB, had a new job. Both Parker and Ward were described in superlative terms by their bosses, she as a “star” who lit up the screen and had a limitless future, he as a capable and thorough cameraman, dedicated to his jobs. By now, most have still photographs or footage of them being murdered on camera as Parker was interviewing Vicki Gardner, who led the local chamber of commerce. She was shot in the back, and has survived. These on-air murders are about as grisly as they come, and there can be no explanation, except insanity, to account for them. What was wrong with Bryce Williams, whose real name was Vester Flanagan? Why did he stalk and then kill two of his former colleagues? He’d sued his former employer for racial discrimination and had his claim rebuffed. Still, he maintained a sense of outrage because he felt he was treated unfairly. You probably have never heard of Lonnie Gilchrist, a Wharton MBA, who was dismissed, he said, because of racism. He walked into the Merrill Lynch office in Boston and shot his boss, George Cook, saying, “No billionaire is going to ruin my life.” He worked on commission, and according to many, was treated more like an office boy than a professional. Charles Ogletree, now a Harvard Law professor, defended him in 1988-89, along with two other attorneys. Gilchrist pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, and his lawyers used “racial rage” as one of the reasons that Gilchrist killed Cook. The jury took five days and nearly 30 hours, and deadlocked before reaching a conclusion. The case might have been a slam-dunk, but the jury obviously found at least some merit in the racial rage defense. Nobody deserves to be massacred at any stage of their life. The folks at Mother Emanuel AME Church had their lives cut short. The little children at Sandy Hook Elementary School, in Newton, Conn. had full lives ahead of them. Anyone who picks up a gun and decides to fire at a group of people publicly has clearly taken leave of their senses. Yet,

there is a difference in the way crazed people are discussed in the media. Vester Flanagan was immediately described as angry and crazed, a judgment the media did not rush to when Dylann Roof, the shooter at Mother Emmanuel in Charleston and Adam Lanza, the shooter at Sandy Hook, embarked on insane massacre activity. Can race be a factor? What happens when mental illness collides with racial rage? The man who shot Alison Parker and Adam Ward either experienced or perceived racial slights. The station manager Jeff Marks said Flanagan was “a man with a lot of anger.” If even a fraction of the slights Flanagan said he’d experienced were true, he had a right to be angry. Watermelon jokes? Monkey slurs? In the 21st century? Come on people. Some of us can turn the slur around or ignore it. White folks might find this funny and some African Americans might find themselves profoundly offended. Those who already feel beleaguered might feel so offended that they’d respond angrily enough to be labeled “hostile” by a human resource manager. Lonnie Gilchrist was also labeled an “angry” man. One of his bosses said he got so angry at criticism that he reacted with such an outburst that “we were very frightened.” How much stereotyping goes into labeling some Black men as frightening? Do they have to be taller? Larger? Or, simply blacker? Descriptions of Flanagan as an angry Black man need to be contextualized. Some describe him as an arrogant man with a chip on his shoulder. Some of those terms are subjective. How many African Americans have been described as “angry” when they simply attempt to hold their own in a mostly White space? One coworker said Flanagan was angry because he responded crisply when she described him as “too quiet.” I guess if he laughed aloud he may have been considered “too boisterous.” Even as we mourn Alison Parker and Adam Ward, we have to ask why their murderer snapped. We have to ask why there are so many “angry Black men.” They don’t all scream, they don’t all shout, they don’t all shoot; most let their corrosive anger swallow them from inside. Many of those outwardly functioning Black men die a decade earlier than their White counterparts because of the anger they’ve internalized. What happens to a dream deferred, wrote Langston Hughes? Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun? Does it fester like a sore and then run. Maybe it just sags like a heavy load. Or, does it explode? Lonnie Gilchrist exploded. Flangan exploded. We can call them deranged, disturbed, or simply angry. Yet, we do ourselves a disservice if we fail to examine race as one source of their explosion. Blackonomics: Post-Katrina’s Illusion of a Recovery By James Clingman NNPA Columnist Katrina does not need the word “Hurricane” as a descriptor; we are on a first name basis with her. Thousands died as a result of that storm, and others were abandoned, left to fend for themselves in unbearable heat, polluted waters, and filthy municipal facilities. Hundreds of thousands, called “refugees,” were relocated (or “dislocated”) in what could certainly be called Third World refugee camps. And many more were sent to what Barbara Bush thought was a pretty nice place, the Houston Astrodome. “…this (she chuckles slightly) is working very well for them.” Ten years later, our president goes back to New Orleans again after his 5-year anniversary visit in 2010, to declare that he was “inspired” by the resilience of the people of New Orleans, and he lauded the progress made in rebuilding houses. While Obama admitted there is more work to do and cited the inequities that existed long before Katrina came to town, some residents were more open about their dissatisfaction. An Associated Press article by Darlene Superville and Nancy Benac observed, “Colette Pichon Battle, executive director of Gulf Coast Center for Law & Policy, cautioned against slapping too happy a face on New Orleans, saying ‘rebuilding since the storm favors privileged private enterprise and this illusion of recovery is not progress.’ “City residents, too, spoke of uneven recovery. I think we have a long way to go, said Lisa Ross, 52, an appraiser. She said areas frequented by tourists have recovered tremendously but many neighborhoods have struggled.” Based on that quote, it looks like money from tourism is more important than people. But, we knew that, didn’t we? Former President George W. Bush also returned to the scene of the crime to laud what he described as progress in the New Orleans’ education system since Katrina. Juxtaposed against his famous commendation to the head of FEMA in 2005, “Brownie, you’re doing a heck of a job,” his words in 2015 rang hollow. It seems to me that rather than, or at least in addition to speechifying politicians returning to New Orleans, those companies that received billion dollar no-bid contracts to rebuild should have returned to put some of their profits back into the 9th Ward. They should have returned and set up entrepreneurship schools in that “model” school system that emerged from the disaster. It would be great if the Black festivals and conferences that come to New Orleans would leave an economic legacy with Black residents who still suffer

from the vestiges of Katrina’s wrath. All it takes is the symbolism of a presidential visit for us to forget about New Orleans for another five years. Obama should have brought a check to “bailout” the residents? Many Katrina survivors have either been permanently relocated to other states, moved to other parts of the city because of gentrification, gotten sick from the polluted water and formaldehyde in those “guvment” trailers they lived in, or have died during the past 10 years. Despite the number of laborers needed to rebuild the city, the opportunity for Black people to work was stymied by corrupt politicians, greedy corporate execs, and contractors. After being corralled like cattle, accused of “looting” food while Whites were lauded for “finding” food, hunted down like wild animals, abandoned in stinking polluted water, turned back at gunpoint by their neighbors across the bridge, relegated to yet another Diaspora, this time in the U.S., separated from their children and loved ones and unaware of their whereabouts, used as political fodder, and now being used as props for presidential speeches, don’t you think they deserve a lot more than rhetoric? If what is happening in New Orleans now is the best we can offer in 10 years, especially after we spent billions rebuilding Iraq in much less time, the leaders of this nation should hang their heads in shame and beg the forgiveness of those still negatively affected. After that, a “Marshall Plan” should be issued in response to the conditions under which Black and poor people have lived since – and before – Katrina. Economic empowerment is the answer, you know. Former NAACP President Bruce Gordon, in an interview in Black Enterprise magazine (Sept. 2005), speaking about New Orleans, said, “Most recently there’s been a lot of concern about the way African Americans are treated in the French Quarter…folks there don’t treat them very nicely. I would say in addition to [marching], we should take our dollars elsewhere…That, to me, is a more significant message than a protest because it has an economic impact on the offenders.” Gordon was right, of course; but maybe that’s why he was terminated from the money-hungry sellouts in th

e national NAACP. Are you listening, festival goers and conferees? EDUCATION & COMMUNITY NEWS Most LAUSD Students Test Below Grade Level By Paige Austin From PATCH.com A majority of Los Angeles Unified School District students are below grade level in math or English. New Common Core curriculum testing results that were released today by the state show the district’s students performing slightly below their counterparts across the state. The California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress, administered to about 3.2 million students across the state in the spring, is vastly different from the previous Standardized Testing and Reporting program. The results of the new tests, therefore, cannot be compared to the previous year. “The results show our starting point as a state, a window into where California students are in meeting tougher academic standards that emphasize critical thinking, problem-solving and analytical writing,” said state Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson. “California’s new standards and tests are challenging for schools to teach and for students to learn, so I am encouraged that many students are at or near achievement standards. “However, just as we expected, many students need to make more progress,” he said. “Our job is to support students, teachers and schools as they

do.” The tests were administered to students in grades three through seven, as well as those in 11th grade. According to the results, 16 percent of students statewide exceeded the standard in English language arts and literacy, while 28 percent met the standard. Meanwhile, 25 percent “nearly met” the standard, and 31 percent did not meet the standard. In math, 14 percent exceeded the standard, 19 percent met it, 29 percent “nearly met” it and 38 percent fell short. In Los Angeles County, 15 percent of students exceeded the standard in English, with 27 percent meeting the standard, 26 percent nearly meeting it and 32 percent failing to meet it. In math, 12 percent of Los Angeles County students exceeded the standard, 19 percent met it,

29 percent nearly met it and 40 percent did not meet the standard. Los Angeles Unified School District students fared slightly worse, with only 10 percent exceeding the English standard, 23 percent meeting the standard, 26 percent nearly meeting the benchmark and 41 percent not meeting it. In math, only 9 percent exceeded the standard, 16 percent met it, 28 percent nearly met it and 47 percent failed to meet it. LAUSD Superintendent Ramon Cortines stressed that it is too early to be “pleased or displeased” with the results, saying they will “provide a roadmap for how we can better prepare our students for college or the workforce.” “As we all expected, the overall results of these more rigorous assessments show that

we still have more work to do,” Cortines said. “However, we are committed to strengthening our efforts and providing the support our students need to meet these challenging new standards.” Torlakson said the overall results continued to show an achievement gap among some ethnic groups, English-learners

and low-income families. “Clearly we must continue working to eliminate these gaps,” Torlakson said. “Much work needs to be done, but we are moving in the right direction with our efforts to provide extra resources and services for students and schools with the greatest needs.” City News Service

Michael's Granny By Israel J. Matthews Contributing Writer Hello again, this is Israel Matthews, and today Michael's going to his Granny’s house. Michael's mom drove him to his Granny’s house. When they got there Michael ran up to the door and rang the doorbell. Michael's Granny opened the door "Michael!what a big surprise." Michel had packed everything he needed to have fun at Granny’s house. He packed coloring books, colors and swimming trunks for his Granny's big pool in the backyard. He couldn’t wait. He went in the pool and it was nice. After having fun in Granny’s swimming pool it was time for a little TV. He watched a movie in her big beautiful living room. The movie was fantastic. It was the Great Debate with Denzel Washington. I learn a lot about what Black people had to go through. I also learned that it takes a lot of studying to be on a debate team. Michael saw his moms car pull in the driveway. He was sad he had to leave because he wanted to take another dive in the pool. He want to go to Granny’s house every week, every day. Thank you. God Bless.

CHURCH & COMMUNITY NEWS National Baptist Convention Floods Memphis for Annual Session By Wayne Risher Trolley-style buses rolled down the Main Street Mall on Wednesday packed with Baptists on their way to the biggest convention to hit Memphis since the Church of God in Christ. National Baptist Convention USA delegates filled hotels in Downtown and beyond for the church’s Annual Session, which organizers expected to draw as many as 50,000 over five days. Near the Court Square trolley station, Memphians Abdul and Velinda Rashad greeted visitors and handed out maps. The Rashads, members of Hunter Avenue Baptist Church in North Memphis, were part of a legion of hospitality volunteers who fanned out across the city to help visitors find restaurants, transportation and other services. As soon as one bus pulled away with a standing-roomonly crowd, people emerging from nearby Court Square hotels started a queue for the next bus. While Abdul handed out maps, Velinda greeted the gathering crowd with a “Good morning, everybody.” She shooed away a panhandler who approached one of the delegates and explained that the volunteers’ goal is for delegates to have the best experience possible in Memphis. The Nashville-based convention, the nation’s largest black church group, turned heads in August when organizers increased their projection of how many people would attend the event, which runs Monday through Friday at the Memphis Cook Convention Center. The church’s typical session attracts about 20,000. Memphis hotel and tourism officials said the convention came at an opportune time for Memphis, filling a normally slack period with sold-out nights at Downtown hotels. “It’s definitely a good group for us,” said Kelly Earnest, spokeswoman for The Peabody. “Typically after Labor Day it’s a soft week for us but having the Baptist convention and then the Southern Heritage Classic overlap the way they have, we’ve got many sold-out nights. It’s a very good piece of business and we’re grateful for it.” The 26th annual Southern Heritage Classic on Saturday pits Tennessee State University against Jackson State University at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium. Matt Huss, general manager of the Sheraton Memphis Downtown, said the 600-room

hotel is sold out, with Baptist convention delegates occupying all but a few rooms. “It’s a great group,” Huss said. “They’ve been very cordial, very friendly.” When rain moved into the area, the Sheraton accommodated an overflow crowd at the hotel restaurant by setting up a dining area in an adjoining meeting room. The hotel also provides food and beverage service for the convention center. “It’s been a very good week for us,” Huss said. Memphis Convention & Visitors Bureau president Kevin Kane said, “I haven’t seen this many people at an event since COGIC.” “I was at the convention center yesterday and the main hall was full, the ballroom was full, the downstairs was full and the hallways and everything else were jampacked,” Kane said. “They’ve taken over the city,” he added. COGIC, a Memphis-based denomination, regularly claimed crowds of 30,000 plus at its annual holy convocation before moving it to St. Louis in 2010 because Memphis didn’t have enough hotel and convention space. Kane said the bureau assigned a staff person to help find hotel rooms for convention goers, a step that’s reserved for the biggest events. Delegates had booked about 25,000 nights in Memphis hotel rooms by Wednesday. The Memphis area contains about 22,500 hotel rooms. “We’re still selling them. We’re still putting people in hotel rooms,” Kane said. Many delegates aren’t spending the entire week in the city, Kane said. “This is a lot of drive-in, drive-out. A lot of them will spend a night but they won’t spend three straight nights.” Lora Griffin, women’s missionary union president at Friendship Baptist Church in Kansas City, Missouri, has been attending National Baptist Convention events for six years, and she gave Memphis high marks for its hospitality effort. “I think Memphis is doing well,” Griffin said as she waited for a bus at Court Square. “I heard someone say they needed more hotels near the Convention Center, but there is transportation to get to the meeting area.” Griffin said it’s her first time in Memphis, so she plans to take in some of the city’s attractions. “Before I leave, I plan to take advantage of the sights, go to the museums. Whenever I go to a city, I make sure I get to see the

HEALTH & COMMUNITY NEWS Surgeon General Calls on Americans to Walk More NEW YORK, / PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -Surgeon General Vivek H. Murthy issued today a Call to Action on Walking and Walkability. Dr. Murthy's report emphasizes the importance of walking for improving people's physical and mental health. His "marching orders for health" encourage communities to create safe and accessible walking opportunities and to conduct programs to help make walking an integral part of people's daily lives. The Lerner Centers for Public Health Promotion at Columbia, Johns Hopkins and Syracuse universities have started Monday Mile programs on their campuses and in their communities. Monday Mile walks provide a fun, easy way for individuals, families, schools, hospitals and workplaces to give the week a

By Dean L. Jones, CPM Asthma is a lung disease described as a chronic respiratory illness constricting the breathing passages. Annually, 1 in 9 Americans are inflicted with at least one asthma attack. The medical community commonly recommends for preventing asthma attacks to avoid allergens, since allergens can cause inflammation of the bronchial tubes. For all intents and purposes, any inflammation of the airways can trigger an asthma attack, and is not limited to pet hair, plant pollen, air pollution, dust mites, and so on. In view of that, when it comes to what asthmatics should eat and drink the customary focus is on eliminating dairy products like milk and cheese that are known to produce mucus. The reason being is mucus thickens natural secretions in airways and constricts air passages, which is why it is recommended that asthmatics stay well hydrated, as water thins mucus secretions, thereby keeping bronchial passages more open. All the same, one must stay sugar alert surrounding the choices of ingesting processed foodstuff since there is a connection between asthma and processed sugar consumption, as processed sugar is an inflammatory agent when ingested into the body. This fact was documented nearly eighty-five years ago when in 1931 a Nobel Prize for medicine was awarded to German biochemist Otto Heinrich Warburg for his discoveries surrounding the negative respiratory effects of human cells and the metabolism of cancerous tumors. He is credited with clearly showing how tumors thrive in acidic conditions from consuming processed foods, especially those with processed sugar. This time of year when school reopens doctors frequently report an increase in reported asthma attacks. Naturally, some asthma attacks are brought about with the new school activities and consequently literally forgetting to use or locate inhalers at the appropriate time. Even if, asthma sufferers should consider that when

Dean L. Jones their activities increase so does their respective needs to make decisions and eating is one that easily falls victim to making poorly rushed choices. Fast food items use processed sugar to enhance taste and this one ingredient can show up frequently leading to an over activated pancreas organ, which can then lead to inflammation in various sites throughout the body. The pancreas is a small organ that produces insulin and functions for releasing hormones affecting levels of sugar in the blood. When pumped with processed sugar it can over-react and produce too much insulin or too many sugars into the blood, then inflammation in the air passages can occur. To finish, be mindful of pharmaceutical commercials describing products to help with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). These advertisements talk about people having shortness of breath and such symptoms may not be asthma but COPD, particularly for older adults who have smoked cigarettes. On the Johns Hopkins East Baltimore campus, deans, professors, school administrators and fitness instructors take turns in leading the Monday Mile walks. David Holtgrave, interim director of their Lerner Center for Public Health Promotion remarked, "The Monday Mile is a great way to bring our community together – it gives students, faculty and staff an opportunity to interact in an informal and healthy activity, and it encourages everyone to set a pattern of healthy behavior for the rest of the week."

The Columbia Lerner Center collaborated with Columbia University Office of Work/Life to add Move It Monday messages to their walking program for university employees. "The American workforce is becoming increasingly sedentary," said Gina Wingood, director of the Lerner Center at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health. "Facilitating regular walking groups is an important way of supporting the health and well-being of our community." Why Monday? "Research shows that people are more likely to commit to an exercise

program on Monday, and that those who start their week with exercise are more likely to keep exercising throughout the week," Sid Lerner, founder of the Centers explained. The Monday Mile is part of the Monday Campaigns which encourages people of all fitness levels to get moving each week starting on Monday. NATIONAL/STATE & REGIONAL NEWS Poll: Blacks, Whites Agree Police Treat Blacks Differently Byron Dobson From Tallahassee Democrat TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Sharp differences exist between the way blacks and whites view the treatment of blacks by police, according to a poll being released Wednesday by the National Bar Association, the organization of black lawyers and judges. According to the poll, 88% of blacks believe black people are treated unfairly by police, compared to 59% of whites who share that view. In the South, those differences are even more stark. In the South, considered to be the region stretching from Florida to Delaware, it’s a view held by 90% of blacks but just 55% of whites. In the Northeast, by comparison, the gap is much narrower — 74% of blacks say police treat blacks unfairly compared to 63% of whites. But more whites, 67%, compared to blacks, 52%, said police are misunderstood by black people. Those views are consistent across most regions for whites,

Maxine Waters the women who have lost sons at the hand of police including Travon Martin mother Sybrina Fulton and others. but in the Northeast, a national low of 35% of blacks agreed. In

the South, 70% of whites agree compared to 58% of blacks. The

national poll of 1,088 adults was conducted June 25-July 6 by Tallahassee-based Sachs Media Group, for the association, the country’s oldest and largest national association of predominantly black lawyers and judges. Tallahassee attorney Benjamin Crump was elected president of the association in July. Crump, a nationally known civil rights attorney, worked with the family of Trayvon Martin after the 17-yearold was killed by George Zimmerman. The poll was conducted in the midst of a heated summer of debate about police treatment of blacks, especially young black men — Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo., Eric Garner in New York, Tamir Rice in Cleveland and Freddie Gray in Baltimore, where the city just agreed to a $6.4 million wrongful death settlement and officers are awaiting trial. “Our national conversation about race has been going on for a long time, and it’s encouraging to see signs of progress,” Crump

Waters Celebrates 50th Anniversary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development Washington, D.C. – September 9, 2015, marked the 50th anniversary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) founding. In commemoration of this milestone, Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA), Ranking Member of the House Financial Services Committee, commended HUD for its unparalleled work expanding opportunity and providing safe, decent, and affordable housing for millions of families across the country. Congresswoman Waters also reiterated the importance of HUD, noting that the agency’s work is more important today than ever before. She released the following statement. “Fifty years after its founding, HUD remains a critical part of our nation’s social safety net and remains an essential part of ensuring that families have a stable roof over their heads. Whether providing critical rental and homeless assistance for our country’s most vulnerable populations, making important investments in local community development and affordable housing initiatives, or helping millions of families achieve the American Dream of homeownership, HUD has been there – consistently – to support our poorest and historically disadvantaged communities. In my role as the Chairwoman of the Subcommittee on Housing and Community Opportunity, I was honored to work with HUD to preserve and rehabilitate public housing, reauthorize critical

homelessness assistance programs, to support the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) in its mission to expand homeownership, and to rebuild the Gulf Coast after the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina. Additionally, in the aftermath of the recent financial crisis, I was pleased to partner with HUD to help deliver much needed assistance to the families most devastated by the economic collapse. As part of 2008 legislation, I authored legislation

that created the Neighborhood Stabilization Program, which has infused over $7 billion into local communities across the country to rehabilitate foreclosed homes and breathe new life into distressed communities; nearly $230 million of which went to the Los Angeles region. Today, as Ranking Member of the Committee on Financial Services, I see firsthand how HUD supports American communities by providing housing assistance to

more than 35 million individuals, helping 44 million families obtain affordable, sustainable mortgages through FHA, and investing over $144 billion in state and local economic development projects through the Community Development Block Grant program, or CDBG. For the past five decades, HUD has truly been a Department of Opportunity, helping Americans build stronger, safer, healthier, and more sustainable communities. It is my firm belief that HUD can and will continue to make a difference for America’s cities, towns, and rural communities, and help Americans achieve the opportunity to pursue their dreams, provided that Congress adequately fund HUD programs. We have a lot of work ahead of us to give every person in this country, regardless of their identity or geography, new opportunities to thrive. I congratulate HUD for its history of dedicated service to America, and will continue my support in the years ahead.” Congresswoman Waters, as the top Democrat on the Financial Services Committee, continues to fight for HUD programs, helping to ensure that this critical government agency continues to support America’s working families and communities. As HUD enters its 50th year, Waters and Financial Services Democrats remain committed to helping HUD ensure access to safe, decent, and affordable housing and strong communities for all Americans.

said. “However, 50 years of conversation is too long without seeing more movement and, to a certain extent, regression. This survey shows that clearly there remains work to be done.” Crump, along with Clarence Anthony, executive director, National League of Cities, and Karen Cyphers, director of Sachs Media Group’s Breakthrough Research division, will present complete poll findings Wednesday during a national media conference call. Other highlights of the poll: • In response to the statement that certain races are genetically superior or inferior, both black and white respondents strongly disagreed, with whites at 88% and blacks at 74%. However, the difference in opinion across the racial divide was more pronounced among younger respondents. Ninety-four percent of whites between the ages of 18 and 34 disagreed that certain races are genetically superior or inferior, while 67% of blacks in the same age group disagreed. “These data show younger generations of Americans expressing greater concerns about the future of race relations than older generations,” said Cyphers, who supervised the survey. “Younger Americans also report avoiding interactions with people of other backgrounds to a greater extent than older Americans,” Cyphers said. “These findings validate the need for improved communications within communities, and more engagement from public, private and nonprofit leaders.” • To the statement that most black people are racists, only 11% of black respondents agreed, while 27% of whites agreed. • To the statement that most white people are racists, 41% of blacks agreed, as opposed to 28% of whites. • To the statement that the media fuels racial tension, both whites (88%) and blacks (78%) agreed. • To the statement that the news media portrays people fairly based on race, 74% of whites disagreed, and 70% of blacks disagreed. “These findings should concern all citizens and public officials who still see the need to build a greater sense of community after so many years of policy progress,” Anthony said. “There is significant work to be done — especially among young adults who don’t see positive change around them. “While they’ve grown up at a time when we’ve made considerable advances in creating more racially inclusive communities, clearly we all have a lot more work to do.”

ART/ENTERTAINMENT & SPORTS NEWS Maya Angelou’s Art Collection is Headed to NY By Ula Ilnytzky NEW YORK (AP) — The art collection of celebrated writer and civil rights activist Maya Angelou is heading to auction this month. Among the highlights of the Sept. 15 Swann Galleries sale is a painted story quilt that hung in Angelou’s Harlem home. It’s a work by AfricanAmerican artist Faith Ringgold titled “Maya’s Quilt of Life” that was commissioned by Oprah Winfrey for Angelou’s 61st birthday in 1989. It depicts Angelou surrounded by flowers along with excerpts from some of her writings. It’s an acrylic on canvas with pieced fabric border that could bring $150,000 to $250,000. The nearly 50 artworks were consigned to the auction house’s AfricanAmerican Fine Art Department by Angelou’s estate. They’re expected to fetch $400,000 to $640,000. Angelou died last year at age 86. Her son, Guy Johnson, said in an introduction to the auction catalog that “her family hopes that the art which added color and character to her daily life does the same for others.” Her collection reflects her interest in female artists like Elizabeth Catlett and Phoebe Beasley and African culture. “Kumasi Market,” an oil-and-acrylic painting of a crowded Ghanaian market scene by African-American muralist John Biggers, is estimated to bring $100,000 to

$150,000. “The Obeah’s Choice,” a watercolor by Romare Bearden of two AfricanCaribbean women, has an estimate of $20,000 to $30,000. And a painting by Jonathan Green, “Wading in the Surf,” could bring $8,000 to $12,000. The quilt is the only Ringgold quilt to ever come to auction. It measures 6 square feet and includes passages from Angelou’s “Just Give Me a Cool Drink of Water ‘fore I Diiie,” ”Gather Together in My Name,” ”The Heart of a Woman” and “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.” “Just as Dr. Angelou continues to serve as a source of inspiration for countless artists, writers and performers, she also found inspiration

in the works of others,” her son wrote in the catalog. “For my mother, paintings, sculpture, dance and music were ways of translating the intangible into digestible bites; these forms of art were ways of expressing feelings and emotions that resisted the confinement of words,” Johnson said. Earlier this month, the contents of Angelou’s home in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, were sold during a three -day estate sale. Her personal papers, including letters to Malcolm X and James Baldwin, are housed at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, a research unit of the New York Public Library. The artworks will be on view at Swann Galleries from Sept. 9-11, Sept. 12, Sept. 14 and until noon Sept. 15. -
