Local Publisher Celebrates Aunt’s 85th Birthday in Senatobia, Mississippi By Gloria Zuurveen Editor-in-Chief MISSISSIPPI—The family and friends came from near and far to join in the celebration for Juanita Walker-Ross’s 85th birthday celebration in Senatobia, Mississippi on Sunday, September 13, 2015. Annette Balaguer, her husband, Ramon and their two sons, Mario and Andrew had planned everything from their home of Columbia, South Carolina thanks to the wonders of Facebook and the cell phones. It was beautiful with Aunt Juanita’s favorite colors red, black and white. Annette was blessed to have

A picture of Juanita WalkerRoss when was younger. Date Juanita Walker-Ross her cousins Joyce Ann, Mae Rita, Arnita, Linda, Vedia and my friend from Los Angeles to help with setting up every thing for the big day. Aunt Juanita was born on September 11, 1930 in Senatobia, Mississippi to Alner and Laura Walker. Annette gave all the guests newspaper replicas featuring events of the 1930. Popular songs during the 30s were Louis Armstrong’s St. Louis Blues and Fred Astaire’s “Puttin on the Ritz”. The triple layered red, black and white cake was delicious and the menu of baked Chicken, mashed potatoes with cheese and bacon topping made by my cousin Vedia Brunt was mouthwatering served with string beans and corn. We had southern sweet tea to wash it all down. Also celebrating with Aunt Juanita were her two brother’s, Uncle Eddie and Brinkley Walker along with a host of relatives and friends. It was so good to be home to help celebrate Aunt Juanita’s 85th birthday. Ramon and Annette brought a poster of Aunt Juanita’s favorite person, President Barack Obama. She took turns posing with him for pictures with some of the guests. Aunt Juanita was always my favorite Aunt because she always showed how much she cared. When we integrated and

She has always demonstrated courage to fight when necessary. I am so grateful to have been with her to celebrate her 85th birthday. I hope and pray I can be there to celebrate her 90th and many others. It was Aunt Juanita who instilled in me many of the skills I have as an entrepreneur today. She is blessed and she has truly blessed me as an Aunt who cared about the village. Because it does take a village to raise a child.

EDITORIAL/OPINION Publisher’s Column

Dr. Gloria Zuurveen Founder /Owner/ Publisher/Photographer

Hello Everyone, This is the day that the Lord has made let us rejoice and be glad in it. Every day we have opportunity to wake up and get up in our right mind we ought to praise God and give Him the glory He so richly deserve. Yes, without Him we can do nothing and we must never forget from where our blessings come. We can be ashamed of Him before men today and in return He, the Lord will be ashamed of you before the Father so it is our right to do right and call on His name all day and every day. We are blessed, so blessed, and I am living proof of the blessings the Lord has allowed me to reap all the benefits from. We need to consider the ways of God and keep in the forefront of our mind that it is He that gives up the power to get wealth all that we have. We have not because we ask not. We are to not ask God for things with wrong motive but come to Him as a little child in humility asking the Father for peace, for health, for goodness and mercy and most of all we must ask our Father to heal our land today. We must seek Him while He may be found. Seek Him asking that he will show us the way so that we can walk in the righteousness that brings peace and unity instead of all the killing and destroying one another. God is not pleased with all the destruction among the Black race. We must look up and see the salvation that God has granted us through His Son, Jesus. Be blessed.

Another Government Shutdown? By Julianne Malveaux NNPA Columnist Congress must approve a budget by October 1, or our government will shut down. That means that people will not be paid and technically, government departments will cease to operate. Social Security payments, veterans’ benefits, and more will cease to be paid. Literally, government will shut down. Whenever we get to this brinkmanship, Congress approves a continuing resolution that provides temporary funding at current levels, or enforces an across the board reduction of a certain percent. Sometimes the cuts are established so that the military takes smaller cuts than other departments. The bottom line is that lawmakers figure out how to apply a Band-Aid to a hemorrhaging leg. The bad news is that the problem does not go away. The good news is that it keeps us going for a few minutes. Why are House Republicans so determined to have a budget showdown? Part of it is their determination to end federal funding for Planned Parenthood. They refuse to understand that, in addition to providing abortion service, Planned Parenthood provides basic women’s health services, including gynecological examinations. They are providing these health services in areas where they are not available. Abortions represent just a fraction of what they offer. But, based on a set of bogus videos, some Republicans are using those videos to posture about abortion. Somebody needs to speak up for Planned Parenthood, but unless they do, this is going to be a rook on the shutdown chessboard. Then there is the issue, always, about budget cuts and the difference between domestic spending and military spending. In order to accept the Obama budget, Congress will have to lift the debt ceiling. They don’t want to. The Republican rap is we need more fiscal discipline. Many of these folks will take to the floor of Congress or of the Senate to rail about irresponsible spending. Their drama impedes the October 1 deadline, and they know it. This is an opportunity for many Republicans who are presidential

candidates (Ted Cruz, Jeb Bush, Donald Trump, and Ben Carson to name a few) to show their stuff. They want to stand out from their opponents, as well as from this administration. They hope like hell that C-SPAN or some other media is there to capture their vapid remarks. They pray that their passionate nonsense will make the evening news. If they have the slightest bit of sense, they will help pass this budget. Perhaps, after they’ve blown off enough steam, they will. The discussion about the debt ceiling and the division between domestic and military spending is a recurrent one. Some members of both Congress and the Senate have mixed feelings around the deal that our country has cut with Iran. We have limited Iran’s ability to manufacture nuclear weapons, and we have imposed some checks and balances to keep them to their word. How do you cut a deal with the devil? Can we really trust Iraq? For the longest time I have had mixed feeling about the deal, mostly because I really think that part of the deal should be to release American citizens, like the Washington Post reporter Jason Rezaian, who are being held in Iraq. After much contemplation, I am persuaded that the Iran deal is better than anything we’ve had until now. We’re going to deal with a free-lance devil, or a devil with a contract. We can’t verify a thing with the freelance devil. We have significant, though not perfect, limits to Iran’s arms accumulation, so we’ve cut a deal with the devil with a contract. That’s not perfect but it is better than nothing. Would we prefer the Donald Trump nonsense of “I can negotiate with anyone? Somebody would negotiate his comedic idiocy out of the room. It is almost impossible that Congress will pass the twelve bills that are part of our budget. Give that, the next best choice is to maintain the status quo, or impose a percentage cut until a budget deal is cut. Planned Parenthood and Iran should not even be part of the conversation. The deadline, however, has seemed to collide with the drama. There are folks who understand that the budget, or some version of it, needs to be approved by October 1. They just don’t plan to sacrifice their dramatic moment by doing the right thing. Will government shut down? Only if these presidential postures decide that their drama trumps an important deadline. Blackonomics: The Main Thing We Must Do By James Clingman NNPA Columnist What do you consider to be the most important issue facing Black people in America? Jobs? The criminal justice system? The education system? Reparations? Violence? Global warming? Immigration? All of these issues and others you may mention fall under the broad auspices of economics and/or politics. The essence of our problems in both areas is our disorganization. We can complain about the issues mentioned above for eternity, but until we make up our minds to keep the main thing the main thing, our problems will persist. Marcus Garvey and others have told us the greatest issues facing Black people are disunity and disorganization. I totally agree with that. Much of our current condition is rooted in our failure to organize ourselves into a force to be reckoned with, especially in areas that make a difference. The two most important aspects of our society, when it comes to power, are economics and politics; I prefer the term, “public policy.” If we would stop majoring in the minors, our condition would change. Our economic wherewithal is so dispersed, thus powerless, because we virtually give it away without reciprocity in the marketplace. We brag about Black spending “power” but we fail to use it to our advantage; it is power only for those with whom we spend it. An organized effort that utilizes Black dollars to solve many of the problems from which we suffer is the paramount strategy for Black people. Black political influence remains mere influence rather than real power because we give away our “precious” votes, thinking the simple act of voting will somehow cause the two major parties to stop ignoring us and taking us for granted. We still have elected officials and others telling Black folks that all we need to do is “vote” to solve our problems. How ridiculous is that? We out voted White people in the last presidential election, and what do we have to show for it? And please don’t fall back on the low voter turnout during primaries; in 2014, total voter participation was low, but Blacks failed to show because there was nothing on the table that specifically addressed our needs. There still isn’t. It is with that understanding that we must organize our resources toward the very practical model of reward and punishment. With the knowledge of what we face and what controls this society we must leverage our resources to obtain more, just as people use their money to leverage higher loans from banks. You have probably heard the saying, “You have to bring something to get something.”

Organized, focused, collective leverage should be thought of in that vein. Keeping the main thing the main thing is the imperative for organization, focus, and a commitment to sacrifice which, in turn, will result in progressive action and economic empowerment. How can we allow ourselves to be weak when we have the intellectual and financial capacity to strengthen ourselves? Why do we continue to be such a pliable people when it comes to political persuasion, when we have all that it takes to mold ourselves into a viable people that can determine our own fate? The answers to those questions and more are found in the “Main Thing.” Economic power is the main thing in this land of plenty, and after building it, stewarding it, supporting it, sacrificing for it, and creating wealth for it and those who reside here, isn’t time we do the same for ourselves and our children? There was a time, not so long ago, when Black people practiced economic self-reliance and mutual support. We lost our way, and in some cases were led astray, by slick political enticements and even slicker politicians who were – and still are – only concerned with their individual economic security. We chose the political path and abandoned our economic base, the “Main Thing,” in the mid-1960s and have been paying the price for it ever since. This is yet another call from Blackonomics to Black people to finally throw off the yoke of the mundane, the mediocre, and the minor things that plague us and continue to keep us from pursuing the “Main Thing.” How? I’m glad you asked. I will offer one movement and one organization. The movement: One Million Conscious Black Voters and Contributors (www.iamoneofthemillion.com). Learn about it and sign up if you are so inclined. This movement is the answer to many of the issues we tussle with on a daily basis. The organization: The Collective Empowerment Group (www.collectiveempowermentgroup.org). Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, the CEG comprises hundreds of churches working together around business issues to leverage the billions of dollars spent by their members within their communities. Start a chapter in your city. Get busy brothers and sisters. Organize first, and then always keep the “Main Thing” the “Main Thing.” Jim Clingman, founder of the Greater Cincinnati African American Chamber of Commerce, is the nation’s most prolific writer on economic empowerment for Black people. EDUCATION & COMMUNITY NEWS Minority Teachers Quitting Due To Racism And Black Income Disparity, Or Is Common Core And Child Discipline The Problem? By Patrick Frye From the Inquisitr A new report claims the United States’ education system is seeing minority teachers quitting at an alarming rate. Experts cited by the Washington Post claim it is possible a history of racism and income disparity might explain why some black teachers are quitting their jobs, but others believe the new standardized curriculum like Common Core and the inability to apply child discipline may have frustrated these teachers. In a related report by the Inquisitr, Ahmed Mohamed is a Muslim teen who was arrested for allegedly making a clock that was mistaken for a bomb, and his family believes he was unfairly treated due to his brown skin. According to the Progressive, we have minority teachers quitting, yet American public schools largely consist of kids of color. “Nationally, minority students make up 40.7 percent of the public school population,” the 2011 study by the Center for American Progress claimed. “Although many schools (both urban and rural)

are increasingly made up of a majority of black and Latino students, black and Latino teachers represent only about 14.6 percent of the teaching work force. And in urban and highpoverty schools where minority teachers are disproportionately employed, teaching staffs are still predominately composed of white teachers.” President Obama has written about the need to “improve the recruitment, preparation, development, and retention of successful African -American teachers,” yet we are still seeing minority teachers quitting faster in comparison to white teachers. A report by the American Federation of Teachers called the “The State of Teacher Diversity in American Education” claims that “minority teachers—especially minority male teachers—are underrepresented in these urban workforces, with substantial representation gaps between minority teachers and minority students.” According to the Washington Post, income disparity and racism might be one of the reason that we’re seeing minority teachers leaving in such large numbers.

“There is no singular reason for the racial disparities within majors, but centuries of racial discrimination, uneven budgetary support for K-12 education and poor academic advising and student support contribute to the problem,” said Tom Allison, deputy director of policy and research at Young Invincibles. Richard Ingersoll, professor at the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education, also cites “working conditions” as a reason for why black teachers are quitting in such high numbers. He also notes that it’s “standardized curriculum that’s scripted and sometimes micromanaged” which “drives teachers nuts.” In addition to this explanation, PowerLine suggests that minority teachers may be frustrated since control over child discipline has been taken out of the hands of teachers in recent years. “[B]lack teachers may be more frustrated by the indiscipline of their students who (this being the city) tend predominantly to be black, and more discouraged by restrictions on their ability to impose discipline. I’m speculating here. However, the

Shanker study itself argues that minority teachers have higher expectations for minority students than white teachers do. And the study cites

discipline problems as a reason for high teacher quit-rates among minorities.” What do you think?

CHURCH & COMMUNITY NEWS Evangelical Christians Dump Trump: 'Highly Religious' Favor Ben Carson by 56 Percent, New Survey Finds By Samuel Smith From the Christian Post Reporter Although data from earlier this summer suggested that businessman and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump was the leading candidate among Evangelical voters, newer data suggests that Trump is struggling to pick up the support of churchgoers, who are signaling a strong backing for retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson. In an attempt to debunk the widely reported notion that Trump is a leading candidate to receive the votes of Evangelicals in the Republican primary because of his anti-establishment rhetoric, the editor-in-chief of Gallup polling, Frank Newport, recently wrote on new data compiled by his company that he feels better represents Trump's standing with the "highly religious." he new Gallup survey, which was conducted during a time spanning from Aug. 1 through Sept. 8, measures the net favorability of each Republican candidate by religiosity, and finds Trump to be toward the bottom of the pack when it comes to support from the very religious. "These assumptions about Trump's level of support among Evangelicals appear to be based on trial heat polls wherein Republicans are forced to choose one and only one candidate for whom they would, in theory, vote," Newport wrote. "A better view of Trump's image among this group comes from our Gallup data in which Republicans are asked about their views of each candidate individually. This provides a more comprehensive view of the candidates." Trump received just a 22 percent favorability rating among the "highly religious" respondents, and based upon previous research, the highly religious are a good measure for Evangelical Republican. With this group, Trump's support is only good enough for 12th place in the GOP race. By comparison, Carson was

that subgroup), Trump polls just 21 percent. By contrast, among those attending church less frequently, Trump doubles his support." Although Miller finds that Trump only polls at 21 percent among churchgoing Evangelicals, that number falls inline with The Washington PostABC News poll from July that found that Trump finished first among white Republican-leaning Evangelical voters with 20 percent. As it can be unwise to rely on polling numbers to gauge how people will vote come election time, Miller points out that while Trump is seen as an anti-

establishment candidate, his political interests don't necessarily line up with the social conservative interests normally held by those on the religious right. "In Pew's Political Typology, Evangelical populists are 'Steadfast Conservatives,'" Miller writes. "Trumpian populists, in contrast, are frustrated by China 'killing us in trade,' by hedge-fund managers who 'pay no tax,' and, of course, by the bipartisan collusion of the Washington elite on immigration. In many ways, these sorts of complaints traditionally resonated with the white, working-class voters of the Democrat Party."

Torlakson Appoints Administrator for IUSD Frederic J. Brown via Getty Images Ben Carson's supporters in Iowa called him the "anti-Trump" and praised his restrained demeanor during Wednesday's GOP presidential debate. the most favored among the highly religious with 56 percent favorability, while former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio tied for second with 49 percent favorability. "Note that Ben Carson's 56point net favorable among the highly religious Republicans is over two and a half times higher than Trump's," Newport pointed out. "In fact, four candidates in all — Carson, Mike Huckabee, Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz — have more than double the net favorable rating among highly religious Republicans than Trump does." But among the "moderately religious," Trump received a 36 percent favorability rate, which is good enough to tie for fourth place in the GOP standings with Huckabee. Carson again finished first with a 52 percent favorability, while Rubio finished second with 41 percent, followed by Texas Sen. Ted Cruz with 39 percent. "Bottom line: There is no sign in these image data that Trump has any exceptional positioning among highly

religious Republicans," Newport continued. Keith Miller, an opinion writer for The Federalist, relied on another set of data to argue how relatively little devout Christians support Trump. Miller uses the Reuters poll tracker starting from Aug. 21 and ending on Sept. 4 and found that only 25 percent of the GOP primary voters who say they are Evangelical or born-again poll in favor of Trump, compared to the 38 percent Trump receives among all GOP voters. Miller added that Trump polls differently among various religious subgroups. Among churchgoing Evangelicals, Trump receives 21 percent support. Among non-Evangelical churchgoing Christians, Trump polls at 32 percent. Among the unchurched, Trump received 42 percent support. "Even that overstates the amount of Trump support you would find in an Evangelical pew on Sunday morning," Miller writes. "Of those Evangelical GOP primary voters who go to church at least once a month (80 percent of

He holds an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership, an M.A. in Educational Administration, and a B.A. in Liberal Studies, all from San Francisco State University. Dr. Matthews also is a graduate of the Broad Superintendent's Academy class of 2006. Torlakson also praised the work of State Trustee Dr. Don Brann, whose efforts have brought the district to a projected balanced budget. "Dr. Brann and his team have made considerable progress in the road to fiscal stability, and I remain grateful for his service," Torlakson said. The state took over the district in October 2012, when, at the district's request, Governor Brown approved legislation that provided up to $55 million in emergency loans to help the district meet its financial obligations, of which the district has drawn $29 million. The loan must be repaid within 20

years. The legislation required the State Superintendent of Public Instruction to assume all the legal rights, duties, and powers of the governing board of the district and appoint a state trustee invested with the powers of an administrator. By law, the school district's elected governing board serves only in an advisory capacity until a number of conditions are met. The Superintendent's authority continues until the district has adequate fiscal systems and controls in place, and the Superintendent has determined that the district's future compliance with the fiscal plan approved for the district is probable. The recovery plan also includes steps to improve the district's community relations and governance, pupil achievement, financial management, personnel management, and facilities management. Inglewood Unified School District is the ninth school district in California to request an emergency loan, thus triggering the state takeover, since 1990. Since then, local governance has been returned to seven districts. For more information, visit the California Department of Education's State Emergency Loans Web page.

HEALTH & COMMUNITY NEWS Contraception Opt-Out Violates Religious Freedom: U.S. Appeals Court By Brendan Pierson A U.S. appeals court has ruled that President Barack Obama's healthcare law violates the rights of religiously affiliated employers by forcing them to help provide contraceptive coverage even though they do not have to pay for it. Parting ways with all other appeals courts that have considered the issue, the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in St. Louis on Thursday issued a pair of decisions upholding orders by two lower courts barring the government from enforcing the law's contraceptive provisions against a group of religiously affiliated employers. The split in the circuit courts created makes it more likely that the U.S. Supreme Court will take up the issue in its coming term, which begins in October and runs through June. Several employers have already filed petitions with the

Reproductive Vitality By Dean L. Jones, CPM There is a large amount of proof surrounding how what we eat manipulates the outcome of our health. In particular, men can help reduce the risk of developing an enlarged prostate gland, as well as lessen the severity of unhealthy symptoms by sustaining suitable eating habits. For clarity, the prostate is a gland about the size of a walnut, and is part of the reproductive system in the male body. Sadly, an enlarged prostate (also known as BPH - Benign Prostate Hyperplasia) will cause serious problems such as excessive urinating, traces of blood in the urine and/or changes in the color of urine. Although such problems are a lot more common in middle-aged and older men, all the same due in part from what we choose to eat, prostate problems can affect men of any age. For example, men who routinely consume extra calories over recommended daily dietary guidelines are way more likely to develop prostate problems, as compared to those who stay within good quality eating principles. That is because there is a direct link between obesity, high blood sugar and BPH. Whenever a man has an elevated glucose level they are three times more likely to have an enlarged prostate. Consequently, even though eating processed sugar does not necessarily lead to high blood sugar, diet is critical toward eating less processed sugar as part of helping to prevent prostate cancer. Processed sugar will inflame the prostate and thereby create problems, particularly when it is included in processed foods that are very high in trans-fats. Basically, anything made using partially or whole hydrogenated vegetable oil, margarine or shortening are all unhealthy for the prostate gland. For example, processed food items, such as pastries, canned soups, and frozen entrĂŠes commonly use hydrogenated oil.

Dean L. Jones Highly processed foodstuff typically adds sugar and whenever we eat it rarely do we think just how much sugar causes inflammation in our body. Opportunely, by knowing this information can make it easier to value the importance of cutting down or completely eliminating added sugar in order to decrease the pressure on the prostate gland. The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends per day that men consume no more than 9 -teaspoons of added sugar (150 calories), and women consume no more than 6-teaspoons of added sugar (100 calories). The AHA developed these recommendations to help reduce heart disease, in addition to helping prevent problems with many other parts of the mind and body that can be injured from eating too much processed sugar. For over fifty years, considerable world medical research focuses on preventing cancer, and during this same time span American eating patterns have to a large extent become quite unruly. So, be mindful that cancer cells fuel their growth on processed sugar in the body, thereby giving good reason to live SugarAlert! www.SugarAlert.com Mr. Jones is a marketing strategist with the Southland Partnership Corporation (a public benefit organization), sharing his view on mismanagement practices of packaged foods & beverages

court. The Affordable Care Act, commonly known as Obamacare, requires employers to provide insurance for their employees, including access to contraception, sterilization and other preventative services for women. The law allows religiously affiliated non-profit employers to opt out of paying for contraceptive coverage directly. Once they do, insurers must provide the coverage separately

at no extra cost to the employee. Employers that do not follow the opt-out process face a financial penalty. Many employers have filed lawsuits against the government, claiming that the opt-out process makes them complicit in providing contraceptive coverage. Before Thursday, however, every appeals court that considered the issue has rejected that argument. Heartland Christian College

and addiction services non-profit CNS International Ministries Inc, both based in Missouri, and Dordt College and Cornerstone University, both in Iowa, filed the lawsuits before the 8th Circuit. They object to emergency contraceptives, including Plan B from Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd (TEVA.TA), which they believe are equivalent to abortion. The employers say the optout provision violates a 1993 federal law called the Religious Freedom Restoration Act. Circuit Judge Roger Wollman, who wrote Thursday's decisions on behalf of a threejudge panel, said the court must defer to the employers' "sincere religious belief that their participation in the accommodation process makes them morally and spiritually complicit in providing abortifacient coverage." A representative of the U.S. Department of Justice, which litigated the cases for the government, was not immediately available for comment. The cases are Dordt College et al v. Burwell, No. 14-2726, and Sharpe Holdings Inc et al v. U.S. Department of Human Services et al, No. 14-1507, both in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit. LOCAL NEWS U.S. and Chinese Subnational Leaders On Climate Change LOS ANGELES— Mayor Eric Garcetti on Wednesday welcomed mayors, governors and provincial leaders from across the U.S. and China to Los Angeles to day one of the first official convening between the two countries to address climate change. The Summit is the first official convening of U.S. and Chinese subnational leaders on climate change under the Climate Change Working Group. “When Presidents Obama and Xi came together to make their historic accord, it was a hinge of history: a moment in time when we could say that two nations stepped up not to point fingers, not ask questions, but to commit to world-changing directives,” said Mayor Eric Garcetti. “They have asked us at the local and state level to take the torch and carry it

forward — to build on it, to be even more ambitious, and to specify our actions. At this Summit, we have answered that call to action with bold commitments to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions worldwide.” As the two biggest emitters of greenhouse gases on the planet, leaders from the U.S. and China

agreed to share best practices for reducing emissions across industry sectors. During the morning session of the Summit, Mayor Eric Garcetti signed a memorandum of understanding with the Chinese cities of Shenzhen and Beijing to share best practices to reduce emissions from the construction of green building and for oceangoing vessels at berth in their respective ports. In addition, the City of Los Angeles and the City of Zhenjiang, Jiangsu Province announced that they are the first cities to endorse the Subnational Global Climate Leadership Memorandum of Understanding, led by California Governor Jerry Brown, who was also in attendance and spoke at the Summit on Tuesday. The U.S.-China Climate Leaders Summit reconvened on Wednesday, Sept. 16 in Los Angeles with U.S. Vice President Joe Biden was scheduled to visit and provide closing remarks.

NATIONAL/STATE & REGIONAL NEWS Study: Blacks Not Likely to Support Black Republican Candidates By Zenitha Prince From the AFRO.Com Party undermines race among African-American voters; a new study finds, signaling a potentially hard sell for the Republican Party within this voting bloc. And it’s a problem that would likely not be solved by merely promoting Black Republican candidates for office. “There are some very successful African-American Republicans, but those folks don’t attract African-American votes,” said the study’s author, David Niven, a University of Cincinnati professor of political science. “Party matters so much more than race.” After the 2012 presidential elections in which Democratic incumbent President Barack Obama soundly trounced GOP contender Mitt Romney contributed by an historically large turnout among African-

Republican Mia Love becomes emotional as she speaks with supporters after winning the race for Utah’s 4th Congressional District during the Utah State GOP election night watch party Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2014, in Salt Lake City. American voters, the GOP conducted a self-analysis and sought ways to stake a larger claim within the Black and Latino communities. Among those approaches was advancing Black candidates such as U.S. Rep. Mia Love, R-Utah. Niven tested the efficacy of that approach in 28

heavily Black micro-precincts in Ohio’s Franklin County during the 2014 mid-term elections, during which two Black candidates ran for county offices: Clarence Mingo, the incumbent county auditor, and Rita McNeil Danish, who ran for an open seat on the county common pleas court.

The researcher mailed flyers containing a photo of the candidate and the office they sought to every household with a registered voter. But, one mailer, sent to a specific group, included the headline, “Endorsed by the Republican Party” while the other did not. A third subgroup acting as a control group received no mailer. The results demonstrated that Black voters are more likely to vote for Black candidates—unless they know that those candidates are Republican, Niven concluded. “Simply knowing the candidate was African-American did almost nothing for Republicans,” said Niven. “If voters knew the candidates were Republican, they finished below the top of the ticket. If voters didn’t know the candidates were Republican, they outperformed the top of the ticket.” The University

of Cincinnati researcher concluded that GOP outreach to minority voters are hampered by the party’s stance on issues such as immigration, civil rights and other issues important to these communities—a conclusion supported by Black leaders and political experts in previous AFRO reporting. And, too often, Niven added, Black Republicans reflect their party’s sometimesmyopic or dismissive views. “The kind of AfricanAmerican Republicans who have advanced to high office seem disconnected or even dismissive of AfricanAmerican issues and concerns,” said Niven. “The bottom line is: For Republicans, it would help if they have some Colin Powell-style Republicans running for office and not [divisive former Ohio Secretary of State] Ken Blackwell or Mia Love.”

‘Chairman of the Board’ Moses Malone Dies at Age 60 By Nicholas A. Norman From the Houston Forward Times Arguably the greatest rebounder of the modern era has died Sunday in Norfolk, Virginia, at the age of 60. A counterargument could be made for Dennis Rodman, but that argument would be wrong. Three-time NBA MVP and Pro Basketball Hall of Famer Moses Malone, was grounded in the simplicity of his approach. When asked how he was able to be so dominate, he said “Basically, I just go to the rack.” There has never been a better seminar on the art of rebounding. Malone was a workaholic, and made himself into the person he was. Malone was found in bed on Sunday. Former Houston Rockets teammate and close friend Calvin Murphy told reporters the two of them were going to play in a golf tournament. Norfolk police said Malone was found unresponsive and not breathing in his room by hotel staff shortly before 8 a.m. Norfolk Fire Rescue responded and pronounced Malone dead at the scene. The Virginia medical examiner’s office said Monday that Malone died of natural causes, listing the cause of death as hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Malone saw a doctor about an irregular heartbeat less than a week before he died, Malone’s best friend Kevin Vergara said. On the Tuesday before he died, Malone visited a doctor in Houston, where he lived. Malone was working out when he felt his heart skip a beat. The doctor found nothing wrong, but gave Malone a heart monitor. When Malone was found Sunday, he was wearing his heart monitor. Malone was part of the 76ers’ 1983 NBA championship

team, and the club said he will “forever be remembered as a genuine icon and pillar of the most storied era in the history of Philadelphia 76ers basketball.” “No one person has ever conveyed more with so few words — including three of the most iconic in this city’s history,” 76ers CEO Scott O’Neil said. “His generosity, towering personality and incomparable sense of humor will truly be missed.” Nicknamed the “Chairman of the Boards,” Malone was inducted himself in 2001 and remains in the NBA’s top 10 in career scoring and rebounding. He attended the induction ceremonies for the year’s class in Springfield, Massachusetts this weekend before returning to his native Virginia. “Everyone in the organization is deeply saddened by the passing of Moses Malone,” Rockets owners Leslie Alexander said. “Moses was a true gentleman and one of the great Rockets -- and greatest NBA players -- of all time. He will be forever missed. Our deepest condolences go out to his family and friends.” “When I talked to his son [Moses Malone Jr.] this morning, he couldn’t get it out,” former Houston Rockets teammate John

Lucas said. “I kept saying, ‘What are you saying?’ And he told me. ... I was shocked. Moses was one of the best people that I had ever met. ... A true professional, on and off the court.” “He taught us so much about life. He came from nothing,” Malone Jr. said. “He taught us how to work hard and respect people, love your family and always do the right thing. He’s a good person. He was always there to help people. He cared about people who had less than him.” “With three MVPs and an NBA championship, he was among the most dominant centers ever to play the game and one of the best players in the history of the NBA and the ABA,” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said. Malone’s staggering statistics across 21 seasons and 1,455 professional games included 20.3 points and 12.3 rebounds per game. He holds NBA records for offensive rebounds in a career (6,731), season (587) and game (21). Powerful on the court, he was helpful to both friends and foes off it. “Even before we played together, he was one of the first greats who truly mentored me and

showed me how to be a professional,” Hawks Hall of Famer Dominique Wilkins said. “I never saw anyone work harder than Moses and away from basketball, he was just as kind and thoughtful.” Born March 23, 1955, in Petersburg, Virginia, Malone entered the ABA with the Stars in 1974, the first ever player to go directly from high school to the pros. The financial necessity of this decision was obvious: His father left home when Moses was 18 months old, and his mom worked as a meat-packer. As a rookie, he was 6foot-11 and built like a 9-iron — his teenage body bore no resemblance to the imposing workhorse he would eventually become. Due to the coincidental timing of their deaths, you might see a few comparisons between Malone and Darryl Dawkins, who passed three weeks ago. They were both physical prodigies who pioneered the jump from high school to the pros (Dawkins did so in ’75), and both peaked with the 76ers. But the differences outweigh the similarities. While Dawkins is remembered as a lovable goof who never reached his potential, Malone proved that some guys truly don’t need a college education. His rawness was temporary; his drop step and fadeaway were autodidactic. “The young Moses Malone had virtually no offensive moves other than a devastating ability to get the ball off the glass,” former Utah Stars coach Tom Nissalke says in the ABA oral history Loose Balls. “He was so lightningquick and just seemed to know where a rebound was going. I saw a playoff game in his rookie season where he had 38 rebounds, 23 of them off the offensive glass.” Larry Brown classified him as the greatest offensive re-

bounder he’d ever seen, an opinion that has become universal (statistically, he’s the all-time leader). But Brown declared him to be so when Moses was still 18. By the end of the 1970s, he’d one-uped Kareem AbdulJabbar as the best center on earth, winning the league MVP trophy three times in five years. He took a 40-42 Houston Rockets squad to the NBA Finals in 1981, raising a few eyebrows by claiming he could beat the Celtics with four guys off the playgrounds of Petersburg, Virginia. Boston ended up winning the series in six, but Malone got his revenge soon enough. After a trade to Philadelphia in ’82, he tortured the Celtics (and everyone else), and essentially gift-wrapped a longcoveted title ring for Julius Erving. Malone played in the league 21 seasons with nine franchises. He was still averaging a double-double as late as 1990 with the Hawks (although he came damn close again in ’92, as a nearly forgotten journeyman with the Bucks). He ended his career by heaving the ball 77 feet at the end of a quarter and draining a 3pointer, much to the amusement of everyone involved. He was a 12-time All-Star and chosen as one of the league’s 50 greatest players. Malone finished his NBA career with 20.6 points per game and was a fourtime selection to the All-NBA first team. Basketball Hall of Famer Moses Malone will be remembered at a funeral service on Saturday in Houston, TX. Malone, a three-time NBA MVP, died Sunday at age 60. The funeral will be at noon CST at Houston megachurch Lakewood. The church is in the same building where the Houston Rockets played during Malone's time with the team from 1976-1982 when it was called The Summit.

Johnson, RLJE Chairman and Founder of Black Entertainment Television (BET) has acquired all North American rights to the highly anticipated film NINA, based on the life of legendary American singer-songwriter Nina Simone. With first time writerdirector Cynthia Mort, the film stars Zoe Saldana (Avatar, Guardians of the Galaxy) and David Oyelowo (Selma, The Butler). NINA will be released in theaters in December 2015 under the RLJ Entertainment brand. RLJ Entertainment previously released its theatrical titles under the Image Entertainment brand, which RLJ Entertainment purchased in 2012. “I am very excited that RLJ Entertainment will be distributing Nina Simone’s biopic with the tremendous talent involved including Zoe Saldana and David Oyelowo,” said Johnson. “I had the special privilege early in my career of working with Ms. Simone while coordinating a performance for former D.C. Delegate Walter E. Fauntroy and knowing first-hand of her major contribution to the soul and emotion of the Civil Rights Movement. I look forward as I am sure many others will, to her story and legacy being made available by RLJ Entertainment to consumers on various media platforms in the coming months.” “Robert Johnson is passionate about this film and he is passionate about Nina Simone, so we are excited to be in business with him,” said producer Ben Latham-Jones. “We believe he can bring the powerful performances of Zoe and David to as wide an audience as possible.” NINA traces the career of legendary American singersongwriter and civil rights activist, Nina Simone (Saldana). “Call JOE When You’re Ready To Go!” Zoe Saldana and Golden Globe Nominee David Oyelowo believes in, which leaves her living alone in France feeling exiled from her own country. That is, until she meets Clifton Henderson (Oyelowo) who helps the high priestess of soul rediscover meaning in her life and music, and to once again embrace America. NINA reflects both her and the people she gave voice to in both their search for redemption and hope in America during the 1960’s. Nina Simone is unarguably one of the great vocalists of the 20thCentury, a 15-time Grammy nominee, she received the Grammy Hall of Fame Award in 2000. Nina’s versions of ‘My Baby Just Cares For Me’ and ‘Feeling Good’ have become standards, featuring in advertising and jazz compilations, and frequently covered by other artists. Her versions of such classics as ‘I Put a Spell on You,’ ‘Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood,’ ‘Lilac Wine,’ ‘Ain’t Got No, I Got Life’ and ‘Wild is the Wind’ have become the definitive versions. Nina’s strong involvement in the civil rights movement brought out the talented songwriter in her. While ‘To Be Young Gifted and Black’ is probably her best-known composition, and was subsequently covered by Aretha Franklin, Donny Hathaway, Bob and Marcia (whose cover was a U.K. top five hit) amongst others, she also wrote many other songs including

‘Mississippi Goddam’ and ‘Four Women.’ NINA was produced by Barnaby Thompson (The Importance of Being Earnest), Ben Latham-Jones (Kids in Love), Stuart Parr (Get Rich or Die Tryin’) and Cynthia Mort (The Brave One) and executive produced by Pierre Lagrange (KickAss), Allison Sarofim (Lake City), Aigerim Jakisheva (Kids in Love), Zoe Saldana, David Oyelowo, James Spring (Burke and Hare), Gene Kirkwood (Rocky), Lauren Lloyd (Cellular) and Paul Rosenberg (Southpaw). RLJ Entertainment executives Mark Ward, Chief Acquisitions Officer and Angela Northington, SVP, Content Acquisitions negotiated the deal with ICM Partners behalf of the filmmakers. Recent RLJ Entertainment releases include The Rewrite with Hugh Grant and Marisa Tomei and written and directed by Marc Lawrence; The Cobbler with Adam Sandler, Cliff “Method Man” Smith, Ellen Barkin, Melonie Diaz, Dan Stevens, Steve Buscemi, and Dascha Polanco, and written and directed by Tom McCarthy; and Blackbird Based on the same title novel by Larry Duplechan stars Academy Award® winning actress and comedian Mo’Nique (Precious), Isaiah Washington (Grey’s Anatomy), and introduces breakthrough actor Julian Walker and directed by PatrikIan Polk (Noah’s Arc, The Skinny).
