ED SHEeRAN singer-songwriter Two of our Prime Times readers, Teva and Emerson, went along to see Ed Sheeran in concert. Here’s what they thought... Ed Sheeran performed at Vector Arena and we were lucky enough to get tickets. When the lights went down, the 12,000 crazy fans went wild. He sung most of his songs from his brilliant album +. One of our favourite parts was the universal "shhh’s", that was how Ed made us all get quiet. Can you imagine what it sounds like when 12,000 are saying shush? Emerson’s favourite song was "Small Bump" and Teva’s was "Grade 8", which he rapped like a true gangster! One of the things that made this concert special was the fact that he performed all by himself with his guitar and his loop pedal. Ed was talent ? spotted by OW U KN He sang in a O Y Jamie Foxx. DID E local church n d She no er s bor y a s w o choir from the n d r E gs fo an wrote ua r b e r t "Litt o age of four 17th F 91 le th ne direc wo ings 19 t ion, " agai and "Ove n". r es his Ed nam , one s guitar is e of th m el! Nig called

“If i every have backup dancers, i want them to be the penguins off madagascar!”

At the concert!

what’s a loop pedal? A loop pedal is what Ed Sheeran uses instead of a back up band. It records short passages of music and plays them back in a repeating loop. So when Ed begins a song he plays some chords and oohs and aaahs into the loop pedal and these play in the background while he plays and sings the main tune. It’s pretty amazing!

Snuggling up with Ed (well a cardboard cut out of him at least!)

Let’s get Late last year Prime Times was invited to be a judge at Helensville Primary School, ginger beer making competition. It was an excellent day and I must say we have never tasted so many delicious ginger beers ever! Here's how they did it!

1.

The first thing you have to do if you want to make ginger beer is to make what's called a bug. This is the thing that will help make your ginger beer fizz.

You can always tell a great ginger beer by the fizz!

3. Take off the heat and add the rest of the water and the lemon juice. First the class took part in a taste testing exercise to see which brands of ginger beer they liked the best.

4. Without disturbing the sediment, strain the ginger beer bug liquid through 2 layers of scalded muslin. 5. Add this liquid to the sugared water.

2. Cover with a cloth (the sort of material that you would use to strain jelly through as the bug needs to breathe).

Great home made ginger beers, labels and all...

6. Pour the mixture into clean bottles, cap tightly and leave to stand for 2 days, or until it starts to fizz.

3. Let stand for 24 hours.

22

Ingredients 300 ml lukewarm water 1.25 liters water 250 g sugar 1 lemon, juice

2. Heat gently while stirring until the sugar dissolves.

Ingredients 3/4 teaspoon dried yeast 1 teaspoon ground ginger 1 teaspoon sugar

4. After this feed the bug every day for 10 days with 1 tspn of ground ginger and 1 tspn of sugar.

To Make the BEER

1. Put 1 litre of the water and the sugar in a saucpan.

To Make the BUG!

1. Mix the yeast, ground ginger, sugar and lukewarm water together in a large glass jar.

buggin! 2.

7. After this, it must be kept in a cool place or the fridge to prevent the tops blowing. Both the taste and the smell were tested and rated.

8. Then it is time to drink. The ultimate test is in the taste, and it tastes good!

TOYS OUT NOW!

what I mean. He rushed to the nearest toilet but it was full! He looked around scanning the building, and then he saw it. A porta-loo! But this was no ordinary porta-loo. Instead of an old blue rectangle with a smelly unclean toilet, it was covered with sparkly silver and gold paint. On the roof it had a low-glow light with two yellow antennas either side. In the 20 years that Bob had been living in the retirement village he had never seen this unusual contraption.

the adventures of mr big BY TEVA DICKINSON Once upon a time there was the world’s most super Super-hero. He was the most handsome Super-Hero anyone had ever met. He had slick golden hair, a curly moustache, pumping muscles, shining eyes and sparkling teeth. But that was 50 years ago. Mr. B.I.G (meaning Become Incredibly Gigantic) now known simply as Bob, is very different. His slick golden hair is nowhere to be seen and his curly moustache has now turned into a big fluffy Santa beard. His pumping muscles have slowly transformed into rolls of jelly-like flab and his shining eyes now only shine once in a blue moon behind thick glasses, and for his teeth, well they’re just plain horrible. This particular day was no different to any other. Bob lived in a retirement village and was out playing bowls with his friends again. Since hanging up his cape of honour he was now treated no differently than any other 78 year old. Everyone seemed to have forgotten that he was once the world’s greatest super hero who had saved the world too many times to remember. © 2013 Viaco iacom iaco m Overse seas ass Holdi o ngs g C. C V. In the middle of his game he felt a slight tingling sensation down below… well you know

Bob felt so relieved and raced over to the porta-loo. He stepped inside and shut the door behind him. “Aaaaah, that feels better,” he said happily. While washing his hands at the sink he noticed that the inside was no ordinary porta-loo either. For starters the toilet was actually clean, and it felt a lot bigger from the inside than it looked on the outside. On one wall there four paintings; one of a cave man being chased by a wooly mammoth, one of a war scene from World War II, another was a painting of futuristic cars hovering rather than driving, and the fourth was from the time of Superheroes. On the other wall there was a clock, one of those old fashioned ones that goes, “tick, tock, tick, tock.” Below the clock there were a set of buttons, one yellow, one red, one green. Bob went for a closer look…. The time on the clock read, ‘five minutes past twelve’, but in the middle were the numbers 128,000.BC. “Strange,” thought Bob as he ran his fingers gently over the clock face. “I wonder what these buttons are for.” Foolishly he pressed all the buttons one at a time. “Whiz! Whiz!” Bob heard a strange sound. The porta-loo had begun to buzz and shake crazily. Bob panicked and dropped to the floor and held on for dear life. Then as quickly as it started, all went quiet...
