MY WIRELESS AT&T My Wireless AT&T’s roomy new standalone store in the Consolidated Kahala Theatres wing boasts even better displays of its wireless and entertainment services and accessories. TAKE NOTE
From charming character totes to plush pet toys, The Paperie’s merchandise mix has evolved beyond traditional stationery.
P
eruse The Paperie’s shelves and you’ll quickly discover more than just stationery. Tropical diffusers, cheeky wall signs and reusable bags are nestled among its notecards, journals, stamps and stickers. Owner Eldon Ching (above), a former litigation attorney who purchased the store with his wife, Andrea, in 1996, says the rise of email,
text and social media pushed him to diversify, shifting from a custom invitation business to offering a mix of whimsical gift items. One unexpected hit: a pet corner inspired by Ching’s adorable Bichon Frise, Coco, that features colorful toys and pet-themed home décor. Flavorkids, The Paperie’s own line of cards, totes and keiki tees, became an immediate bestseller
T-MOBILE Formerly on the second level, T-Mobile has moved downstairs to the Macy’s wing. Now along with its mobile phones and plans, you can snap up other exciting T-Mobile products such as FamilyMode, a device that manages the digital activity of the whole family and SyncUP Drive, a device that turns your car into smart car.
with wide-eyed characters dressed as musubi, poke bowls and shave ice. Ching says no matter what trends emerge next, keeping his customers happy will never go out of style. “Being out front and interacting with customers, getting that positive feedback from them. That’s what drives me,” he says.
VERIZON WIRELESS Transforming from a kiosk into a store (located in the Consolidated Kahala Theatres wing) translated into a ton more space for Verizon Wireless to show off its great wireless devices, services and plans. On our wish list: the super-sleek Samsung Galaxy S10 smartphone.

THE BIG 5-0
In 2020 Kahala Mall will celebrate its 50th anniversary!
K
ahala Mall’s roots go back to the late ’50s when it was first developed as Waialae Shopping Center. In the ’60s, it modernized and expanded, and by 1970, it emerged as Hawaii’s first fully enclosed, airconditioned mall. Today, Kahala Mall is the primary shopping destination in East Oahu, in the iconic beachfront neighborhood of Kahala. Its focus continues to
be the guest experience, offering a unique mix of local shops and premier retailers and serving as a gathering place for island families and visitors. In appreciation of 50 golden years, this upcoming anniversary year will be a thank you to everyone in the community, especially the mall’s loyal customers. Kahala Mall will celebrate with exciting, special promotions and giveaways throughout the year! Visit

Men, don’t have anything to wear to your next big holiday bash? Problem solved. Reyn Spooner just released its new Christmas aloha shirt which stars Santa on the Big Island skiing the slopes and catching waves off the coast. Swaying palm trees, keiki joining in on the fun and a few sightings of Mele Kalikimaka add to the merry and bright print. The men’s shirts are available in two colorways, blue and red, and include classic, tailored and popover fits. And in the spirit of the holidays, Reyn Spooner also created styles for women, girls and boys with the same pattern, so that the whole family can don the most wonderful aloha print of the year.

WHAT’S NEW
Visiting The Cookie Corner is always a treat; the heavenly buttery aroma alone will hook you. And recently, the locally owned shop refashioned its look to match the comforting, joyful feel of its baked goodies. New lustrous marble countertops, farmhouse pendant lights and subway tiles were key ingredients in modernizing the space, while charming photos of customers enjoying cookies and wallpaper featuring the bakery’s signature floral print really sweetened the vibe.

Can you tell us about some of the artists whose work you carry? We sell a lot of Ed Furuike’s originals. He just brought us another one of his lei paintings and it’s so beautiful—it looks like you’re looking at a wall of lei. Artist Camille Izumi’s vantage point is typically from underwater, which is totally appealing to me as a swimmer. I grew up swimming competitively and am just a water person. Her depictions of women and the female form underwater are amazing. We have other popular artists, such as Heather Brown and Clark Little. I also love two of our newest young artists, Heather Almeda and Miriam Zora Engel.
MEET THE SHOPKEEPER
ART HOUSE
At Magnolia you’ll find a haven of elegantly curated wares. Behind the charming collection? Owner Maggie Parks, attorney, art fan and avid D.I.Y.-er.
What was your background before Magnolia? I’m an attorney. I was practicing at a law firm here in litigation. I had two young kids and I just decided it was time, given where I was in my life. I always wanted to do something like this, so I decided to open a business. It was quite the divein because I had no idea how to work a register! It was a very steep learning curve but it turned out wonderfully. What is your vision for the store? The vision is to offer a wide selection of gift options from the Mainland, Europe or overseas, and, increasingly, from the Islands. We’ve been focusing on a lot of local products, and then balancing that with home goods and artwork from Hawaii artists.
12
KAHALA MALL
What are some of your favorite pieces in store right now? On the gift side, we’re offering more earth-friendly products. We have portable utensil sets as well as clutches made from discarded plastic by Big Island brand Upcycle Hawaii. The artist, Mattie Mae Larson, actually collects plastic debris from the beach and fashions it into functional art pieces. We also carry Unsponges, which are washable, reusable sponges that are a great alternative to typical synthetic sponges that ultimately get tossed and sit in landfills.
Do you dabble in art yourself? I’m definitely more of a D.I.Y.-er and I embrace my crafty side. I’m constantly working on home-improvement projects. Just in the past week or so I refinished a dining table; built, painted and installed a large arbor for my garden; replaced a steel gate; and refurbished a vertical wall garden that my son and I built from scratch. As the holidays are upon us, any suggestions for stocking stuffers? Our Maui Soap Co. handmade soaps are so pretty and the price is really great. Pineapple Palaka makes great ties and has now ventured into womenswear with scarves that are just fabulous. What is one of your favorite things about the Magnolia community? One of my very favorite things is coming to the shop in the morning and being greeted at our door by fresh magnolia flowers that one of our long-time supporters brings for us. She is part of Kahala Mall’s great community of morning mall walkers and has a big magnolia tree in her yard. It’s so touching that she shares her flowers with us—they are so incredibly beautiful and so is she!

THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT GILDA MINASSIAN Chances are Calista is one of your favorite local boutiques for special occasion pieces and casual-chic apparel. But you may not know much about the stylish woman at its helm. Owner Gilda Minassian talks about her rich career, globetrotting for fashion and her prom project that gives back.
I was born in Tehran, Iran. Due to the revolution and the ensuing political unrest, my family was forced to leave our hometown. I’m so fortunate to call Hawaii home. Fashion is in my bloodline. I come from a family of entrepreneurs, which includes my mother, who was a seamstress, saleswoman and merchandiser, and gave back to the community as a mass producer of uniforms for local grade schools. As a woman creating opportunities outside the home, she was a trendsetter. 18
KAHALA MALL
I learned so much from watching her. When we arrived in Honolulu, I followed in her footsteps in clothing and retail. Prior to owning Calista, I worked the sales floor at Cotton Cargo for about 40 years. I was promoted to store manager, then district manager overseeing sevenplus stores. Eventually, I became merchandise manager and ran the entire operation. In 1996 I bought the business and Calista was born. When renaming it,
the name Calista spoke to me. And it speaks for itself—Calista is Greek for “womanly beauty beyond the ordinary,” which accurately describes our company’s purpose. I personally hand-pick all of our collections. Some of my favorites in
My go-to outfit for an event is a simple chic black dress. I’ll dress it up or down with our boundless accessory collections—right now I’m loving our De Blossom sandals and crystal tassel necklaces. I would describe myself as a jetsetter for fashion. I love traveling and do so multiple times a year to find seasonal fashions for the store, and to seek out new experiences with food and culture. My next trip is to Europe this fall—stay tuned! Come November, I’ll be a proud grandmother to twin boys!
Above left, clockwise: Crystal tassel necklace, $45. Citron blouse, $198. Below: De Blossom sandals, $58.
PAYING IT FORWARD My store affords me the privilege to pay it forward. For years, I’ve held a beautiful partnership with Lo Kaimuloa, owner of Riches Kahala. We work together to ensure that young women can attend prom feeling like their best selves. While Lo fundraises, I outfit as many girls as possible at below cost and without profit. Our goal is to provide as much outreach as possible.

alk into the Kahala Mall ASB and you’ll be greeted with a warmer welcome. Inviting wood-paneled walls, a bright and airy entrance, modern light fixtures and furniture are all part of recent renovations to the 12-year-old location. But the sleek new
look is just part of the change. Expanded office space houses an expanded team of ASB experts. Kahala’s branch now includes residential loan officers, business bankers and financial consultants, so you can buy that new home, start that new enterprise and decide the best path for your
keiki’s finances without leaving town. And don’t worry about a wait. ASB’s convenient online appointment system on asbhawaii.com makes every trip even more efficient. It all adds up to an easy way for East Oahu families to handle all their finances in one beautiful stop.
Warm, toasty and fresh from the oven, Pretzelmaker’s delicious baked treats are the ultimate holiday party pupu. The eatery’s delectable Pretzel Bites, available in addictive flavors such as Parmesan, ranch and garlic, and its savory mini Pretzel Dogs, made with juicy 100% Angus beef, can be ordered in large grab-and-go potluck-size assortments. Add on a few dipping sauces—pair cinnamon-sugar bites with the caramel and icing options for a heavenly dessert—and you’re sure to make the party hop.

eiki boutique Up & Riding is easily a parent favorite for its everythingunder-the-sun mix of small-fry fashions and outdoor gear. After all, where else can you find rainbowprinted boardshorts,
resin skateboards and pineapple teethers all on one shelf? Opened in 2010 by locals Jake Mizuno and Shyra Mauer, longtime board riders and water lovers, the shop was intended as a go-to for young surfers and skaters. It offers one of the widest selections
of local kids brands on the Island—you’ll find Kahakai trucker caps, Little Chiefs of Hawaii onesies, Bitty Bambu sundresses and more. This winter, be sure to check out the latest wave of graphic tees and swimwear from the shop’s adorable in-house line.

HEARTS OF GOLD
Liang of Hawaii has been adorning customers with unique Hawaiian and fine jewelry since 1972. Now, on the eve of retirement, husband-and-wife team Annie Liang and Kenny Kao reflect on decades of customer relationships, the shop’s evolution and a custom collection rarely seen in public.
do all kinds. If something breaks or needs to be resized, we can do it and our customers trust us to do it. That’s how we built our business. What’s it like working together? AL: We’re very lucky. To a lot of people, it’s impossible. KK: Most people! When we first began, my father-in-law said, “You guys can stay the whole day, 24 hours (together)?” I said that’s fine with me! We still have arguments. You go to charge a customer (and think) is it too expensive? Too low priced? Those are the things we argue about. Other than that, we’re fine.
“We’re very lucky to have the best customers that span three generations.” Kenny, have you made any jewelry pieces for your wife? KK: Oh yes, so many! A pendant. Rings. She has a whole collection from me. AL: Don’t forget my watch! He made me a Hawaiian bracelet watch. KK: Before, she would wear the watch, but not anymore. Because they’re one-of-a-kind they cost a lot of money, so they’re hard to sell.
How did you get started in the business? Annie Liang: My father ran a jewelry store in Taiwan and opened (Liang of Hawaii) when he moved to Hawaii in 1972. The rest of our family came over in 1975 and I’ve been working in the store ever since. Kenny moved here when we got married in 1979, learned the trade and opened his own factory. Kenny Kao: I took a jewelry-making class at UH. I learned how to do lostwax casting, polish everything and set a stone. Later, when I found out that Hawaiian jewelry was so popular, I 22

asked a jeweler friend to teach me how to carve the lettering. I used to work at a table here but needed more people to help me so I rented a factory space. When did you join the store full time? KK: It was around 2008 that I sold the factory and came back to the store. AL: He was a big help. Because he knows everything about jewelry, it was easy for us to expand our repair department. We
When will you retire? AL: Sometime next year. Having the store is like having a baby. You have to take care of it 24 hours a day. We’re 65 now. If we sign another lease, we’ll work until we’re 70. It’ll be too late to enjoy life! What will you miss most? AL: We’re very lucky to have the best customers that span three generations. It used to be a mom bringing her little girl. Now that little girl is our customer with her own little girl! A lot of young people come into the store and say, “My grandma sent me here. She says we have to come here to buy our wedding rings,” or “our Hawaiian jewelry.” It’s so touching.
