Fresh Oregon crab is back on the menu — the commercial Dungeness crab fishery opened along all of Oregon’s coast on Dec. 31, 2019. Prior to the opener, crab vessels were allowed to set gear from Dec. 28 onwards, using the “pre-soak” period of time to set gear in anticipation of the first pull of ocean crab pots just before the new year. Though the ocean commercial Dungeness crab season in Oregon is targeted to open Dec. 1, it can be delayed to ensure a high-quality product to consumers and to avoid wastage of the resource. Crab meat recovery testing in late November and early December showed that many areas within the Tri-
State region still did not meet the criteria for an opening. The delayed opening has allowed for crabs to fill with more meat and all areas have now exceeded meat recovery criteria. Recreational crab harvesting is also currently open coastwide in the ocean, bays and estuaries, and on beaches, docks, piers, and jetties. Recreational crabbers should always call the Shellfish Hotline (800-448-2474) for closures before crabbing. Commercial Dungeness crab is Oregon’s most valuable fishery. Last year’s delayed season opening still brought in the second highest ex-vessel value ever ($66.7 million) with 18.7 million pounds landed, just above the 10-year average.

THE GOULD PIANO TRIO will joined by clarinetist Robert Plane when the group takes the stage for a Jan. 19 Neskowin Chamber Music Concert at Camp Wi-Ne-Ma.
A Harmonious Combination Clarinetist Robert Plane, Gould Piano Trio to play Neskowin Chamber Music concert on Jan. 19 Clarinetist Robert Plane is joining forces with the Gould Piano Trio for the the Neskowin Chamber Music series’ first concert of 2020 on Sunday, Jan. 19, 3 p.m., at the Chapel at Camp Wi-Ne-Ma. Plane boasts a long career both as a solo performer and with various chamber music ensembles like the Gould. The list is extensive and varied and includes performances with the Mozart Clarinet Concert in Madrid, the City of London Sinfonia, the Ulster Orchestra, the Zurich Chamber Orchestra, and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. Plane also has long had a particular interest in British clarinet music in concert and on disc. He is the principal clarinet of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. He has performed and recorded with the Gould Piano Trio for more than 25 years. The Gould Piano Trio has been compared with the great Beaux Arts Trio for, in a Washington Post review, its “musical fire” and “dedication to the genre.” The group was launched by its first prize at the Melbourne Chamber
Music Competition, followed by a successful appearance at New York’s Weill Recital Hall, described by Strad Magazine as “pure Gould.” The trio performs both well-known masterpieces and some neglected works. They have also commissioned and performed new works, considered by them as important to staying creative and freshly inspired. The Goulds — Lucy Gould, violin, Richard Lester, cello, and Benjamin Frith, piano — have toured extensively in North America, the Far East, New Zealand, and all over Europe. In addition to their concert performances, they have given master classes throughout the British Isles. Season tickets for Neskowin Chamber Music series, which is now in its 26th year, are $110; single tickets at the door are $25. For more information, visit neskowinchambermusic.org or call 503-965-6499. The Chapel at Camp Wi-Ne-Ma is located three miles north of Neskowin, just off Highway 101.

Commissioners to consider cable landing appeal on Jan. 9

Tillamook County Commissioners will consider a set for four appeals of a conditional use and similar-use determination granted by the Tillamook County Planning Commission earlier to Edge Cable Holdings LLC, on Jan. 9, starting at 9 a.m. On behalf of Facebook, Edge Cable Holdings is seeking to land a Jupiter Submarine Cable System fiber optic cable on a residential lot in Tierra Del Mar. The Jan. 9 hearing is a continuation from a Dec. 9 hearing when commissioners heard from staff, the applicant, appellants and took public testimony. At the close of that hearing, oral public testimony was closed. In total, four appeals have been filed with Tillamook County. A partial list of the issues raised in the appeals include the assertions that the proposed use is not allowed conditionally because it is not among the listed uses, that the proposed use shouldn’t qualify for a similar use because it is “fundamentally” different than uses permitted conditionally and doesn’t meet the “common definition of ‘public utility,’” and that the parcel isn’t suitable

ODFW is reminding crabbers that effective Jan. 1, 2020, all surface buoys used with recreational crab pots or rings must be marked to identify the owner of the gear. The identifying information should include first and last name or business name and at least one of the following: permanent address, phone number, ODFW ID number, or vessel identification number. The new rule does not apply to crabbing gear used from piers, jetties or beaches. Tags are

We continue to assert there will be substantial negative and unacceptable impact to our community, our residential use, and the residential character of the community.” Records relating to the proposal and the ensuring appeals — including audio of the first appeal hearing — can be found by visiting co.tillamook.or.us/gov/ ComDev/hidden_Edge_Cable.htm.

news&community The Tillamook Narcotics Team (TNT) detectives, along with Tillamook County Sheriff Patrol Deputies, Tillamook City Police Patrol Officers, and an OSP K9 Unit served a drug related search warrant on Dec. 23, at approximately 3:30 p.m., at 7560 South Prairie Road in Tillamook, Oregon. Detectives contacted multiple subjects at the location. During the search, methamphetamine, some cash, evidence of drug sales, and some firearms, including an NFA class III automatic weapon, were recovered. As a result, Duane Edward Bradish, 53, and Warren Scott Hunter, 54, both of Tillamook, were arrested and lodged at the Tillamook County Jail. Bradish was arrested on charges of possession of methamphetamine (two counts), delivery of methamphetamine (two counts), unlawful possession of a machine gun, and possession of heroin. Tillamook County is continuing to play the waiting game in regards to when it can reopen the beach access ramp at Cape Kiwanda. news&community Tillamook Co. partners complete opioids use needs assessment A consortium of local partners working together over the past three months recently completed a countywide needs assessment that shows a clearer picture of the gaps and opportunities for opioid use and misuse in Tillamook County. Funded by a federal Rural Communities Opioid Response Program (RCORP) planning grant, the consortium—dubbed RCORP Tillamook—worked with consultants and community stakeholders to collect and evaluate data relevant to Tillamook County. Evaluating data-based estimates, the workgroup has determined that around 1,700 to 1,800 people in Tillamook County currently misuse opioids. This number includes three subgroups: those with opioid use disorder (OUD), whether diagnosed or not; those with opioid dependence and who are at-risk for developing the disorder; and those without dependence who occasionally take opioids for non-medical reasons. The needs assessment document provides brief Tillamook County health and demographic data. It then estimates how many people are misusing
opioids in the county, based on data from National Survey on Drug Use and Health, the Oregon Health Authority, and the U.S. Census Bureau. The document then distills the qualitative findings from community interviews into three themes: 1) pain management and prescribing practices; 2) addiction, treatment and recovery; and 3) harm reduction and education. The document describes resources, challenges and potential solutions for each theme as it pertains to Tillamook County. Identifying these main themes will provide a strong outline for the strategic plan that will be completed by the consortium in February. The final needs assessment document is available online on Adventist Health Tillamook website at AdventistHealthTillamook.org. Upcoming RCORP Tillamook updates between now and the project end in May 2020 will include a strategic plan, a workforce plan, an implementation plan and a sustainability plan. For questions about the needs assessment document or the RCORP Tillamook project, please call 503-815-2308.
Strong Women & Strong People Program to begin Jan. 13 Oregon State University Extension Service in Tillamook County is inviting the public to participate in the “Strong Women & Strong People Program,” a strength-training program for middleaged and older adults, beginning the week of Jan. 13. The Strong Women class is for women and has three session options starting at 8 a.m., noon or 1:30 p.m. Classes are held Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at the OSU Extension Office in Tillamook, 4506 Third St. The Strong People class is open to everyone and is held Tuesday and Thursday mornings, from 9-10 a.m. at the Netarts Community Building. The Strong Women & People Programs were developed at Tufts University, based upon research on how strength training improves the health of older adults. Research shows strength training improves bone density, arthritis symptoms, flexibility, strength, and reduces falls. Registration is now open at http:// bit.ly/TillamookFamilyHealth. Enrollment includes payment
of $30 and the completion of health screening and enrollment forms. Those older than age 70 or those with other chronic health conditions must obtain a release from their medical provider prior to beginning class. All new participants attending sessions at the OSU Extension Office agree to attend orientation on Monday, Jan. 13, 10:30-11:30 a.m. or schedule an appointment with the program coordinator. Accommodation requests related to a disability should be made by Jan. 6, to Nancy Kershaw, 503-842-3433, Nancy. Kershaw@oregonstate.edu. The Oregon State University Extension Service shares research-based knowledge with people and communities in Oregon’s 36 counties. OSU Extension addresses issues that matter to urban and rural Oregonians. OSU Extension’s partnerships and programs contribute to a healthy, prosperous and sustainable future for Oregon. OSP seeks tips for case of unlawful waste of ducks, geese The Oregon State Police Fish and Wildlife Division is asking for the public’s help locating the person — or persons — responsible for the unlawful waste of several ducks and geese in Cloverdale. On Thursday, Dec. 26, 2019, Fish and Wildlife Troopers responded to a report of three garbage bags full of birds found by a person while walking their dog. The bags were located near the Nestucca River in the area of the Cloverdale Boat Launch and the Cloverdale Water District building. A total of eight geese and five ducks were found within the three garbage
bags. Three of the geese had the breast meat removed, and the rest were left to waste. OSP is asking anyone who was in the area or anyone who may have information on the person(s) responsible to call the TIP line at 1-800-452-7888, or dial *OSP and refer information to Sergeant Greg Plummer. Information can also be sent by email to TIP@state.or.us. The TIP program offers preference point rewards for information leading to an arrest or issuance of a citation for the unlawful take/possession or waste of big game mammals.
