Chamber raises an estimated $6,000 at annual awards banquet By TIM HIRSCH of the Sun The results are in and the coffers have been filled. The Pacific City-Nestucca Valley Chamber of Commerce is estimating a $6,000 profit from its annual Awards Banquet and Auction, held Dec. 4 at Kiawanda Community Center. Chamber President Susan Amort told the Sun that funds raised will help support the many events it sponsors each year, as well as provide financial support for its advertising efforts and its commitment to pay for
street lights in various communities in South Tillamook County. Amort also said that, from her perspective, she remains excited the Chamber was able to hold the event at the Kiawanda Community Center this year — and the record crowd they were able to serve. “The (Kiawanda) Community Center really went above and beyond the call of duty to help us,” she said. She also credits the support of the community and local businesses for making the fundraiser such a success. “We couldn’t have done it without the support of a lot of volunteers, the

people who donated items, people that worked the event that night and, of course, the Grateful Bread and Oar House, who really put on a fabulous dinner.” She also voiced appreciation for the staff of Oregon Coast Bank for their job of checking attendees in and out. “They made it much more enjoyable for those working the event,” Amort said. “We really appreciate their expertise and their time and effort.” For more information about the Chamber, visit pcnvchamber.org.

Every business can use a little assistance. And Tillamook Bay Community College Small Business Development Center is there to lend that needed helping hand. To share the services that the SBDC offers businesses throughout the county, the Pacific City-Nestucca Valley Chamber of Commerce will host SBDC director Arlene Soto at its Jan. 8 monthly meeting at Kiawanda Community Center, starting at noon. In addition to discussing services provided by the SBDC Network, Soto will present information about the TBCC truck driver training program. The SBDC network provides services through free, confidential business advising and low-cost training programs. Soto says that all Tillamook County SBDC business counselors have owned at least one business and bring real world experience to advising sessions. “If we don’t know the answer to a business question, we do all we can to help business owners find someone who does know the answer,” she says. Soto, who began her tenure as director of the Tillamook SBDC on Dec. 1, 2017, has been a small business development center director since October 1994 — first in Cheyenne, Wyoming for 13 years then for 10 years in Coos Bay. She has been working with businesses in the accounting field since 1976 and in management since 1988. She is a certified management accountant with a Master’s degree in management from Marylhurst University and a Bachelor’s degree in accounting from Portland State University. The Jan. 8 meeting agenda also includes community updates from leaders in Tillamook County as well as local organizations and entities. New exhibit focuses on building of Route 6 In the summer of 2018, the State of Oregon named Routes 6 and 131 in Tillamook County as the state’s newest Scenic Byway called “Trees to Sea.” To commemorate that designation, the Tillamook County Pioneer Museum has installed a new exhibit entitled “Celebrate Route 6!” The story of the building of the Wilson River Highway and how the Tillamook Burns affected the building of the road is told through a series of historic photographs from the Museum’s collection. The exhibit will be on display until Feb. 17. The Pioneer Museum has been working with the Tillamook Forest Center and Art Accelerated/Blink You Miss It Gallery on a year-long series of events to highlight the importance of the Wilson River Highway in the development of Tillamook County. For more information on upcoming events, visit the “Celebrate Route 6” or “Art Accelerated” Facebook pages. Chamber looks forward to the New Year By VERNE MOBLEY for the Chamber
Howdy Friends and Neighbors! Here it is, time to make those New Year’s resolutions! Did it work for you last year? Not me — close however!! Our Chamber annual meeting Christmas party on Dec. 4 was a huge success — yes, but by lots of folks’ opinions! Hart Keene, our entertainer, was so (what do you say) “magical.” Over 130 folks enjoyed the evening — and the dinner. Three of our great businesses provided the food and refreshments. They are the Oar House, the Grateful Bread and the Sportsman’s. Great night!!! Our next meeting is Jan. 8 at noon at Kiawanda Community Center. Our speaker will be Arlene Soto, the director of the Small Business Development Center — working with our college, TBCC. Plans are right on track for the Birding and Blues event coming up in late April. More later in our next letter. We all had a great time two weeks ago when Santa Claus showed up in a fire truck and the kids sang “Jingle Bells” on his arrival. There were more than 100 young folks — and others — who sat on Santa’s knee. Our Nestucca Valley Lions Club President Dorothy Gann reports the Christmas Basket program with its deliveries went off really well. Our many volunteers sent out our great meals. 107 very appreciative families were served fantastic meals at their homes. Our Lions say thank you many times to all the volunteers that made this work!!! It’s great to be a Lion and a PCNV Chamber members. Call me at 971-257-0200. Paid Advertisement
Community invited to Hospice ‘Reading of the Names’ on Jan. 10 Adventist Health Hospice serving Tillamook County is inviting the community to the annual Reading of the Names ceremony that honors tribute gifts made during the Light Up a Life campaign. The funds help meet the needs of local hospice patients and their families all year long. The Reading of the Names ceremony, the focal event of the Light Up a Life campaign, will be held at noon on Thursday, Jan. 10 at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Tillamook. A display with the names remembered can be viewed in the front lobby of Tillamook Regional Medical Center through the end of January. A donation during this time, made in memory of someone who has died, or in honor of someone still living, helps to ensure that hospice care is available to anyone in the community with a terminal illness. Donations are accepted by mail to PO Box 188 in Tillamook; in person at the Hospice office, located at 980 Third Street, Suite 400, in Tillamook; and online at AdventistHealth.org/Tillamook/Giving. “The support and care that our Hospice team provides to individuals and their loved ones during the last days of their life journey is so important,” shares
Hospice team member Donna Rumbarger. “As we minister through Hospice we see each one as a part of our mission to share God’s love.” Families also share what a difference it makes to have Hospice care for their loved ones. As one person shared, “During such a hard time you are like angels coming to help and support us…God bless you, Tillamook team!” Hospice provides compassionate end-of-life care, including medications related to the terminal illness, equipment required to care for a person at home, and professional services to around 100 patients throughout the Tillamook region each year. The Hospice team, which includes a physician, nurses, aides for personal care, a social worker and chaplain, as well as volunteers, has as their sole focus supporting the person and their loved one along the last journey of learning, loving and reflecting together. While most insurances cover hospice care, each year there are some individuals who receive financial assistance for some or all of the services they need. For more information, call the Tillamook Hospice office at 503-815-2486.
