illamook County Public Works will be closing Resort Drive on June 20 to allow for repair of two failing sections of the road — one at milepost 1.3 near Riverview Lodge and another just east of Reddekopp Road at milepost 2.1. Both sections have endured damage caused by flood waters during recent years. In a May 25 dated letter send to landowners, Public Works said that the jersey barriers placed to protect the travelling public have been undermined by the Nestucca River and are at risk of no longer offering protection to vehicles using that stretch of Resort Drive. The county’s engineering team, working with an ODOT traffic engineer, has recommended closing Resort Drive now and providing one lane for residents, businesses and emergency vehicles. Tillamook County plans to start construction at milepost 1.3 in July 2016, a project that will relocate the existing alignment of Resort Drive away from the Nestucca River about 25 feet. The project is expected to be completed by this fall. Access to the Riverview Lodge will be open. In a June 8 release to the media, Tillamook County Public Works engineering technician Ron Newton said that this site has been along a slide plane for several years. After a feasibility analysis, moving the road away from the river about 25 feet was the most cost effective and environmentally permitable option. As an Emergency Relief project, it is being funded 90 percent by the Federal Highway Administration with a 10 percent local match. The project is out for bid with bid opening on June 16. The county expects the contractor to start construction towards the end of July and be completed prior to the rainy season. It will require traffic on the road be limited to local traffic and emergency access only. Because it is an earthworks project, the county says the most cost effective time to build the repair is during the dry summer months. At the second improvement site at milepost 2.1, construction of a viaduct

The Pacific City-Woods Citizens Advisory Committee and the Tillamook County Department of Community Development will host the second of three tentatively scheduled public meetings on Thursday, June 16, starting at 6 p.m. at Kiawanda Community Center to afford residents the chance to offer input on the area’s community plan. “We want to be sure to get as many

DOGS and their owners will enjoy a canine-centric afternoon Saturday, June 18 at the 8th Annual Yappy Days in Pacific City. Events will consist of face painting, raffle baskets, doggie meat popsicles, photo opportunities, tug-of war games and more.

RESORT DRIVE in Pacific City will be closed starting June 20 to allow for the repair of two failing sections of road, at milepost 1.3 and at milepost 2.1. Above jersey barriers at milepost 2.1 are beginning to be undermined by the Nestucca River and officials fear the road is becoming unsafe for motorists. — half road and half bridge — is expected to begin this fall and be completed by the spring of 2017. This section of roadway failed in February of 2012 when the river bank washed away the edge of the paved roadway. At the time, the county placed the concrete barriers that are still there and began the process of securing funding for design and construction of a repair. Following a detailed engineering review, it was determined that the best course of action is to construct a partial viaduct where the west bound traffic will drive over a bridge section leaving the east bound traffic on the existing alignment. Funding for this project will again be 90 percent covered by Emergency Relief funds. The county is paying a 10 percent match. As work will be below the “Ordinary High Water,” it is regulated under the Division of State

Lands, the US Army Corps of Engineers and the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. The “in stream work window” for work in this part of the Nestucca River is fall through spring. As with the other repair project, construction will require traffic on the road be limited to local access only. The county will be placing detour signs on Highway 101 and in Pacific City. Officials note that the county rebuilt Brooten Road two years ago and just completed a significant patching project on Old Woods Road. Both of these roads will be used as part the local detour plans. Though Public Works initially indicated they would close Resort Drive at milepost 2.1 on June 16, they announced on June 8 they are moving the closure date to June 20 because of a half-day safety training on June 16.

community members involved in the conversation as possible,” CAC Chair Anne Price told the Sun. First adopted in 1999, the plan guides development rules for the Pacific City-Woods area. “It is important to revisit the plan and make sure it still reflects the priority of the community,” said Price. According to a March 22 letter

from Community Development Director Bryan Pohl, the tentative plan is for the Tillamook County Planning Commission to hold a workshop on the plan on Sept. 8 and hearing on Oct. 13, the latter at which public testimony will be taken. Lady Bobcats record first win as season ends By SHIANA WEAVER for the Sun The Lady Bobcats faced Delphian as the season wound down on May 10 and came away with their first win, 21-20. “Both teams played with heart, but behind our strong bats and perseverance, we were able to hold off Delphian,” says Head Coach Lynn Foster. In their last action of the season, the girls played a May 12 double header at home — again against Delphian, but lost both games. “We knew coming into the year we had a young team and we’d be grow-

ing up together, and that’s just what we did,” says Foster. “The girls worked hard in practice and in games, and learned something new each day. Their defense became more solid as did their awareness of situations and knowledge of the game.” Three girls received Northwest League All League Honors: Danny Johnson (Second Team), Dakota Logan (Honorable Mention), and Scarlet Harrison (Honorable Mention). “The girls had a great season” says Foster. “Their positive attitudes and love of the game helped them through the tough losses. ”

THIRTY-SIX ACRES of forestland along salmon-bearing Butte Creek was recently donated to North Coast Land Conservancy

Conserving the Creek Neskowin landowner creates 36-acre preserve with help from North Coast Land Conservancy

N

orth Coast Land Conservancy received a donation on June 7 of 36 acres of forestland just east of Neskowin. The property includes land on both banks of Butte Creek, a salmon-bearing tributary of Neskowin Creek. Conservation of this land was the vision of landowner and Neskowin resident Sue Gabriel, who in 2011 purchased a parcel of forested land on Butte Creek with the goal of protecting a beloved ancient Sitka spruce she calls Heshe. Gabriel then began looking for an organization to which she could donate this parcel and a smaller parcel nearby, also along Butte Creek, for protection in perpetuity. In addition to the donation of land, Gabriel provided

financial support that will allow NCLC to manage the properties in perpetuity for the conservation values they possess. Gabriel represents the type of enthusiastic landowner NCLC treasures working with to protect important habitats along the Oregon Coast. Headquartered in Seaside, North Coast Land Conservancy has been working since 1986 to conserve and connect the landscape of the Oregon Coast from the Columbia River to northern Lincoln County. To date, NCLC has conserved nearly 4,800 acres of habitat on the Oregon Coast—sevenand-a-half square miles of forest, wetland, and coastal prairie and the rivers and creeks that run through them. NVS spring fund raising drive challenges community to match 105 donations of $20.16 Neskowin Valley School’s Board of Trustees is challenging donors and those in the community to match their 105 pledged gifts of $20.16 each. The fundraiser will run through June 30. Billed as an investment in the 2016 school year, the idea for the fundraiser sprang out of the school’s spring strategic meeting during which the board discussed fundraising plans for the next year. Discussion topics included how small donations can make a big impact on overall giving and soon revolved around making the

idea of $20.16 per donation for the 2016 school year. “Within moments, every board member made a pledge to give and then they included the honorary board members in the match,” said Erica Soto, development director for NVS. “In a very short amount of time, we had 105 pledges of $20.16 on the table. It was very inspiring to see so many people giving without even thinking about it.” For more information, visit www. neskowinvalleyschool.com/#!2016campaign-1/u7g6b.

THE INN AT CAPE KIWANDA’S Yappy Days Festival runs June 18, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and features activities for man and his best friend.

Reveling with Rover Yappy Days promises fun and games, a chance to support Animal Shelter

I

t will be a celebration of man’s best friend when the Inn at Cape Kiwanda hosts the 8th annual Yappy Days Festival, Saturday, June 18, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., an event billed as a day of fun, plus a chance to raise awareness for the Tillamook Animal Shelter. Held on the sidewalk and lawn in front of the Inn, the event will feature face painting, balloon animals, live music, raffle baskets, a silent auction, pet wash, light animal grooming, vendor booths and, tentatively, pet adoptions. New this year will be doggy manicures, meat popsicles, mini pools for a doggy dip, photo opportunities and tug-of-war games. The event also functions as a fundraiser for the Tillamook Animal Shelter — 100 percent of the proceeds raised will go towards the shelter’s needs. The shelter will also have a booth at the festival where attendees can learn about its new location. Donations are accepted and tax receipts are available. Donations of anything that can be raffled or auctioned off at the festival are welcome as well as cash donations. Animal food donations are accepted but will not benefit the shelter — instead, they will be passed onto local food banks. The Tillamook Animal Shelter is always in need of blankets, towels, toys and grooming products. “It’s a really nice way to bring some attention to the Tillamook Animal Shelter,” said Tara Thayer of the Inn at Cape Kiwanda. “This is Pacific City’s way of giving back (to the shelter).” For more information visit facebook.com/ yappydaysinpacificcityoregon or call 1-888-9657001.

PACIFIC CITY-NESTUCCA VALLEY Chamber of Commerce members celebrated the opening of the new Visitor’s Center located at 35170 Brooten Road in Pacific City. Pictured (l-r) are board members Jeremy Strober and Susan Amort, President Verne Mobley, Vice President Dave Baxter, and board members Jacie Voegeli and Doug Olson.

Chamber unveils new visitor center The Pacific City-Nestucca Valley Chamber of Commerce feted the opening of their new visitor center in downtown Pacific City with a June 7 open house where attendees had the chance to meet and greet Chamber board members and learn about the vision for the new center. Located at the office complex just north of the U.S. Post Office at 35170 Brooten Rd., Suite H, Pacific City, the space features tourist and business information. Any member business will be able to

promote their business by displaying business cards or brochures. Chamber members may also reserve the space for business use. Though the Chamber has not yet announced regular hours as it’s still busy getting a full slate of volunteers to sign up to run the center, board member Jacie Voegeli told the Sun that the goal is to have it open at least on Friday and Saturday when many visitors arrive. For more information, call 888-KIWANDA.

Nestucca Fire strengthens its firefighter crew By TIM HIRSCH of the Sun Nestucca Rural Fire Protection District recently bolstered their paid firefighter staff by two in an effort to better serve the community’s emergency needs — especially during the weekend. Former volunteer David Sellers began his 32hour a week paid shifts two weeks ago and will be on the job Friday through Monday. Filling a full-time, 40hour a week slot is Matt Keefer, a former volunteer for Seaside Fire as well as a former Nestucca Fire resident firefighter. Keefer, who began his new job on June 6, will work Friday through Tuesday. Nestucca Fire Training Officer Jim Oeder told the Sun that the new additions were necessary because of the district’s increasing call volume. “We just needed additional help and this helps us with it,” he said. Total annual cost including benefits to fund both positions is approximately $68,000 — $42,000 for the full-time position and $26,000 for the 32-hour post. Funds to cover the cost will come from downscaling the resident program and from not filling an open

PIZZAS, SANDWICHES & MORE! PIZZAS

seasonal position that had received no interest from prospective workers. “Unfortunately, the resident program has been hard to find people for,” Oeder said. “We weren’t able to fill that program for what it was budgeted (for).” With six 32-hour to full-time firefighters now on staff, Nestucca Fire will have between three and six paid staff available for calls everyday. “This gives us a guarantee that we will have a fairly full crew on weekends,” Oeder said. “ That’s where the major call volume is. On weekends we will, for the most part, know we’ve got at least four people rolling out no matter where the call is.” The need for more paid staff is a direct result of the lack of volunteers, which is a national problem. Still, Oeder says he is bringing on five new volunteers in the near future, including one that is already certified as a firefighter and one who is a fresh graduate from Nestucca High School. The remaining three are expected to take a step towards certification on Saturday, June 11 when they participate in a practice burn as Nestucca Fire will level a home on the Beltz property that is being turned into the Sitka Sedge State Natural Area.

fter 25 years of successfully serving breakfast and lunch in Pacific City, the Grateful Bread Bakery has added dinners to the menu. “It’s been going pretty well since we opened May 12,” said manager Dawn Beyer. “It was bit of a slow start, but that’s what we were hoping for, since we had a new crew and wanted to be ready. But business is building, and people seem to be loving the food; the plates come back to the kitchen clean.” When Beyer isn’t managing the evening shifts at the Grateful Bread, she helps manage both the Pacific City and TIllamook farmers markets. “The markets are opening this weekend which is great,” she said. “It gives us more options for fresh local ingredients.” And fresh market ingredients definitely light a fire under head chef Arurelian Mot. “We love sourcing from the farmers markets,” he said. “From duck eggs to beets and everything else in God’s green cornacopia.” Even before offering dinner, the restaurant has always used as many local ingredients as possible, like cheese from Salal Ridge Goat Farm in Cloverdale, and salmon from Craig and Susie Wenrick, which the restaurant smokes in-house. The restaurant will also be serving crab, ling cod, and rockfish caught from the Wenrick’s boat, Sea Q. Options on the dinner menu will include appetizers like steamer clams, smoked salmon bruschetta and chicken satay, and entrees such as pesto parmesan encrusted rock fish, New York strip steak, chicken penne, and a risotto made with sun-dried tomatoes, caramelized onion and asparagus. “The risotto is our only vegetarian entree,” Beyer said, “But the salads are very big, so they are meals, too.” People who prefer gluten-free can

Page 10 • Pacific City SUN • June 10, 2016

also rest easy, as the menu guides diners to gluten-free options. “We can accommodate just about any special request.” Beyer said. “Since everything is made fresh we can customize any dish.” Added to the regular menu are nightly specials of entrees, appetizers, soups, and a vegetable side dish. “We also will have a rotating flat bread,” Beyer said. “The toppings will be different every night.” Examples of special plates include entrees of grilled chinook with creamy pesto vinagrette and chicken linguini alfredo, spring pea and ham soup du jour, and rotating flat bread toppings of goat cheese, carmelized onions and roasted peppers. A kids’ menu offers small plates of mac n’ cheese, grilled cheese, or a cheese quesadilla. And at meals end, there will be roughly four dessert options each night for diners to choose from, including the bakery’s decadent chocolate torte. “It’s gluten-free and very delicious,” Beyer said. To accompany any meal, beer and wine are available, including local beers on tap. Chef Mot, who has been with the Grateful Bread Bakery for four years, is very excited about the expanded menu. “We’ve been successful for 25 years, and now it’s time to spread our wings,” he said. “What we are serving at dinner is homegrown comfort food that will hug you.” The Grateful Bread Bakery is located at 34805 Brooten Road and is open Thursday through Monday from 8 a.m.-3 p.m., then opens for dinner from 4:30-9 p.m.

This feature is part one of a summer-long series featuring the restaurants, cafes and eateries of South Tillamook County. Watch for the June 24 edition of the Sun for the more insights into the dining options in the area.

The exhibit starts June 25 at the gallery’s downtown space at 34950 Brooten Rd., Pacific City, and an opening reception for the artists will be held that same day from 5-8 p.m. Both Vogland and Welti have strong connections with the Oregon Coast, having taught and worked at the nearby Sitka Center for Art and Ecology. Vogland, who constructs compelling personal narratives from found objects, old photographs, and architectural artifacts, has also shown her work at Rowboat ever since the gallery located to downtown Pacific City. The gallery’s recent move to a much larger quarters next door inspired Vogland to team with sculptor Rebecca Welti for a space-specific installation taking advantage of the high ceilings and natural light in the gallery’s main exhibition area. rea children looking for a creative outlet this summer need look no farther than Slug Soup, a week-long children’s art day camp, celebrating its 21st year June 20-24. Twelve art classes for children going into kindergarten through sixth grade next fall will be taught by eight working artists at Nestucca Jr./Sr. High School, 34660 Parkway Dr., Cloverdale. Two class times will be available each day and children can take either a morning class from 10 a.m.-noon and/or an afternoon class from 12:30-2 p.m. Each class is 90 minutes each day for all five days. Tuition is $35 per class for students in the Nestucca School District, and $65 per class for students who live outside the Nestucca School District. Materials are included in the tuition. Family and community members are invited to a celebration Friday, June 24 from 2:15-3:15 p.m. to view the student’s creative work. Artwork exhibits, performances, and Tillamook ice cream will round out the celebration. Classes for those entering kindergarten-first grade are Artistic Inspirations (using a variety of paint mediums and recycled materials) and 2 Visions of Color (exploring art using various watercolors). Children entering first and second grade can create art with round objects and various paints (RoundAbout-Art) or create animals out of paper, paint, chalk, and clay (Lions, and Tigers, and Bears...Oh My!). Spruce Up Your Space, Parts One and Two, will be available for those entering second and third grade. Part One will combine collage, fiber art, and mixed media to create home décor items, Part Two will construct suspended wire baskets to hold air plants and moss. Classes for third and fourth graders are Art Off the Page (exploring different types of sculpture) and Animal Crackers in My Soup (drawing and painting animals with watercolors). Children entering fourth and fifth grade can take Stop Motion Animation (working as a team to create an animated stop motion video using dry erase markers and a white board) or Ceramic School of Fish (using

Pelican Pub & Brewery to host ‘Dine Out for Relay’ on June 15 Team Looney Tunes, a locally based Relay for Life team, is hosting a June 15 “Dine Out For Relay” event at both the Pelican Pub and Brewery in Pacific City and at the Pelican Brewery and Tap Room in Tillamook in an effort to raise money for the Relay for Life event that will be held in Tillamook later this year. Team Looney Tunes is just one of several teams that will participate in Tillamook County’s Relay for Life when the 24-hour event is held Saturday, July 9, starting at 10 a.m., through Sunday, July 10. Relay for Life assists cancer patients in our community with services such as transportation for treatment, guest rooms, fuel assistance, financial assistance, and many other services.

The event is held to celebrate, honor, and remember our loved ones that have lost the battle, are still struggling, or have won the fight with cancer. Last year, Team Looney Tunes, sponsored by the Nestucca Ridge Family of Companies, was able to donate more than $3,000 to the Tillamook County Relay for Life, and The Pelican Pub & Brewery had the honor of catering the Survivor Luncheon, which they will be doing again this year. During “Dine Out For Relay,” both Pelican Brewery locations will donate 10 percent of all sales during dinner, from 4 p.m. to close. All menu items are included from burgers to beverages. There will also be information on ways everyone can help.
