Woods barn lost to fire despite quick response by NRFPD
By TIM HIRSCH of the Sun
A structure fire claimed a barn in the Woods area in the early morning hours of Saturday, May 13 when what was ruled to be an accidental blaze engulfed a barn just off of Virgil Avenue and Ferry Street.
Emergency personnel responded to the call shortly after 12:30 a.m. and, according to Nestucca Rural Fire Protection District Chief James Oeder, on arrival found the barn “fully involved” by the fire.
“It actually spread to four other structures, (and) those four received minor to medium amount of damage,” Oeder told the Sun
He also said that by the time he arrived, which was just 10 minutes after the call came in, there was already some collapse occurring in the barn structure. As a result, the barn was a total loss.
He added that nearby buildings including a house and a pump house — mostly suffered outside damage but that a shop incurred some heavy smoke damage.
The fire was reportedly under control by approximately 2 a.m., but crews watched for hot spots all night. The scene was investigated at 9 a.m. with the assistance of the state fire marshal, when it was determined to be caused accidentally. However, as of press time, an exact cause hadn’t been reported.
“It was a well done job by everybody,” Oeder told the Sun about the effort. “It really shows that our mutual aid (organizations) work well together and help each other out. It made things go smooth, and we accomplished what we needed to without losing additional structures.”

Voters cast ballots in key races for school board, fire board, PCJWSA
Voters cast ballots on the next slate of directors for the Nestucca Valley School Board and the Nestucca Rural Fire Protection District during a special election that culminated on May 16 when all ballots were due. County wide, unofficial results show a voter turnout of 35.95 percent on the strength of 7,604 Tillamook County residents out of 21,151 registered voters turning in their ballots. The county has 27 days to certify the election results.
According to the unofficial results, in the Nestucca Valley School District Board of Directors race, Position 1, voters
reelected incumbent Joseph A. Boyd (631), over Norman Loveland (471), and Phil Hurliman (342); in Position 2 in a contest of newcomers, former Nestucca teacher Wally Nelson beat Sherry Hartford, 770-705; in Position 3, longtime board member Diana Boisa was reelected over Greg Woods, 732715; and in Position 4, a second race with two newcomers, Zachary Best leads Russ Sanders, 718-717.
The Nestucca Rural Fire Protection Board of Directors race saw two seats go unchallenged, both featuring current board members. In Position 2, Dorothy (Munson)
Gann received 923 votes, and, in Position 4, Verne A. Mobley received 932. The race for Position 1 saw incumbent Shelley Dickson besting challenger Dwaine McClintock, 585444.
Similarly, voters cast ballots on two unchallenged positions for the Pacific City Joint Water-Sanitary Authority Board of Directors. For Position 3, Thomas Donohue was reelected with 213 votes; and for Position 5, Kathy Starotska earned 228 votes.
For more election results, visit co.tillamook.or.us/clerk/elections/clone-2023may-special-election.
With the recent fire in the rear view mirror, Oeder said now is a good time to think about exercising caution when it comes to burning debris.
“(People should) be very careful,” he said. “We’re starting to dry out. (It’s important) to make sure if you do have to burn, that it’s completely out before you leave it.”
Oeder also noted that calls for service have been up this year — and even more so this past weekend when high temperatures affected the area. He said that over the last seven days, staff and volunteers went out on more than 50 calls.
“This year has been busier,” he added. “Over the weekend, I would attribute it to the hot weather, but, overall, it’s hard to pinpoint exactly other than I think people (are) not traveling as far. They’re coming over here to get away for their day.”

Second sinkhole discovered atop Cape Kiwanda
Oregon Parks and Recreation Department is asking visitors to use caution and to stay away from the area where a second sinkhole has formed at Cape Kiwanda State Natural Area.
The second sinkhole was reportedly discovered Monday, May 8 about 10 inches away from the first, which appeared in January. The new sinkhole measures about 10 feet across and about 30 feet deep and developed within the safety fence of the first sinkhole in the northwest corner of the lower dune.
Park staff learned about the additional sinkhole late Monday evening when a photo was posted on social media. They expanded the safety fence early Tuesday, May 9 around both sinkholes to keep park visitors at a safer distance.
“We ask that visitors respect this barrier and all park safety barriers and that they keep pets on leashes and children away from the edges. We are monitoring the site daily, but it’s a dynamic environment. The soft sandstone cliffs can give way without warning, which is why it’s important to respect safety fences everywhere in the park,” said Park Ranger Supervisor Travis Korbe.
The second sinkhole appeared sometime between 10 a.m. when a park ranger checked on the safety fencing and 7:30 p.m. when a photo of the second sinkhole was posted on social media.
Oregon Parks and Recreation Department is working with a geologist to help determine the best location for a permanent safety fence to keep visitors away from the sinkholes. The soil appears to be falling into large, unstable voids beneath the cliff caused by strong ocean waves. The first sinkhole measures about 25 feet across and 15 feet deep.
Cape Kiwanda is a sandstone outcropping, which is naturally much weaker and prone to sudden changes compared with hardier rock like basalt. While any natural area carries risk, enjoying Cape Kiwanda safely requires visitors to pay special attention.
Even though the spot is marked with barriers, OPRD says the sinkholes could change at any moment, and others could appear. Visitors that see something that concerns them are being advised to leave the area and report it to Cape Lookout State Park staff at 503-842-4981. In an emergency, they should call 911.
Oregon Parks and Recreation Department is continuing to monitor the situation. The agency said it will share additional details as they become available.

EXPLORING TILLAMOOK COUNTY’S
RICH CULTURAL HERITAGE
By Nan Devlin, Executive Director, Tillamook Coast Visitors Association
While locals and visitors are aware of the abundance of outdoor recreation and local foods available in Tillamook County, you may not realize how abundant we are in cultural heritage, too. The county has 14 museums, experiences, historic centers and preserves, all available for discovery and learning about local heritage. In Pacific City, the premier experience of course is the Dory Fleet, the only one in the lower 48 states. It is designated as an Oregon Heritage Tradition, and you can see it in real-time action nearly every day as a boat launches out to sea.
There’s much more to explore. Let’s start in north county and work our way back to Pacific City.
In Manzanita, the Nehalem Valley Historical Society has turned a basement in the Pine Grove Community Center into a world rich in local history. Exhibits cover stories from shipwrecks and ancient ships landing along local shores (including Sir Francis Drake’s ship), to the Nehalem Clatsop tribes, homesteaders, industry and townships, and state parks. A recent program was a documentary about the first woman mail carrier. Learn more at nehalemvalleyhistory.org
In Rockaway Beach, in a corner of the Washed Ashore blacksmith shop, is the International Police Museum. Ed Wortman, the former police chief of the city, collected police memorabilia for decades, and about 8 years ago, put his collection on display. Find out more at internationalpolicemuseum.org
Garibaldi is home to three historic entities. The Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad is one of the most popular experiences in the county. Hop aboard in Garibaldi or Rockaway and experience slow travel, train whistles, and views you can’t see from a car. If you have family visiting, take them for a ride on the train! oregoncoastscenice.org
Garibaldi Maritime Museum focuses on ancient sailing ships that explored the area, fishing industry, artifacts, native peoples, and interactive exhibits. Go to garibaldimuseum.org. The Historic Coast Guard Boathouse, sitting in Tillamook Bay in Garibaldi, is the most photographed building on the Oregon Coast. Take a walk out on the 700-foot pier, toss a crab pot over the railing, and watch boaters, fishers and other crabbers. savegaribaldipier.org
In Bay City, Kilchis Point Reserve, guides you along three interpretive trails that lead to a birdwatching station overlooking Tillamook Bay. The trails feature native peoples’ history, homesteaders, and flora and fauna. The trail is ADA-friendly and lovely.
Tillamook is home to four history centers. If you haven’t been to the newly remodeled Tillamook Creamery Visitor Center, you might be surprised to find the story of the creamery, cheesemaking and dairy farming beautifully told along the entry hall and upstairs overlooking the production floor. And of course, there’s ice cream to enjoy! Go to Tillamook.com
Latimer Quilt and Textile Center features the work of both local and international fabric artists, as well as traditional arts, including weaving, spinning, rug making and knitting. Find out more at latimerquiltandtextile.com
Tillamook County Pioneer Museum has three floors of collections and exhibits of pioneer history, native peoples’ artifacts, birds and animals, and logging and dairy industries. Go to tcpm.org
Of course, the Tillamook Air Museum is well known, but if you haven’t been there recently, make a stop. Hangar B a one-of-a-kind structure, and pays homage to World War II defense efforts in our county. More than 15 vintage aircraft are on display. Tillamookair.com
Did you know the Cape Meares Lighthouse is the shortest, most “squat” of Oregon’s coastal lighthouses? It’s also one of the most beautiful – and so are its scenic views. Take a tour of the lighthouse and then walk over to the Octopus Tree. It’s a wonderful setting for appreciating the beauty of Tillamook County. Stateparks.oregon.gov
The Tillamook Forest Center on Highway 6 is a must-see. Pull over on your way to or from Portland and experience this interactive experience about the great Tillamook Forest fire known as the Tillamook Burn. It’s a great place to hike and do birdwatching too. tillamookforestcenter.org
Finally, the self-guided driving tour of the Tillamook Quilt Trail is ideal if you love geocaching and photography. It celebrates the traditional and modern takes on quilt design, painted and mounted on barns and buildings throughout the county. tillamookcoast. com/what-to-do/quilt-trail/

The Pacific City Shuttle service returns this Memorial Day Weekend, starting Friday, May 26, in an effort to accommodate the anticipated high volume of visitors traveling to the Pacific CityWoods area. The free shuttle, a service of the Tillamook County Transportation District, will run through Labor Day weekend, Sept. 4. It will again operate Friday through Sunday along a route traveling from Bob Straub Park in the south, to as far north as Whalen Island County Park with 30-minute frequencies during the mid-day and early evening hours. This year, the shuttle will also operate on Memorial Day, Juneteenth, and Labor Day. Two vehicles will be used to provide this service, including one trolleyreplica bus.
The shuttle departs from the Thousand
Trails office every 30 minutes during the mid-day and early evening hours and begins operating at 10:00 AM on Friday and 8 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The Shuttle provides rides to some of the most-visited places around Pacific City such as the Pelican Pub, Sitka Sedge State Natural Area, and the Kiawanda Community Center. Residents of the Pacific City-Woods area are also welcome on the shuttle. TCTD buses can accommodate two bicycles on the frontload bike rack.

Running into Summer
Registration is now open for Ultimook Track Club’s youth summer running program
Have a young runner?
Each summer Ultimook Track Club facilitates a youth summer running program for Tillamookarea athletes.
“Our mission is to develop young runners in both mind and body. Young runners require a fun, supportive environment to aid in aerobic development,”
Ultimook Youth Director Chelsea Yarnell said.
The Ultimook Youth Track Club is a running club designed for athletes entering Kindergarten-eighth grades.
“Last year we had nearly 100 athletes that participated in our club,” Yarnell said. “Each of our practices educate young athletes on the different elements of running such as warm ups, dynamic drills, running workouts, and stretching. We modify all activities based on ages and break our crew into age groups who are overseen by coaches with running and fitness backgrounds.”
Registration is currently open. The 2023 season will run May 30-July 27 with practices meeting on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30-6:30 at the Tillamook Junior High School. The cost to participate is $74 for the season; financial assistance is available.
“Our practices are always a highlight of my day,” Yarnell said. “Our coaches love to share their passion for running with the community, and in return, we’re always rewarded with so much enthusiasm and joy from the kids on our team.”
Athletes will also be invited to run in the newly branded Tillamook Bay Run on Aug. 19.
A new addition for Ultimook Youth this summer is the Ultimook Track Club Day Camp. The camp will focus on introducing athletes to the various events in track and field including: running races, relays, hurdles, long jump, shot put, discus, and javelin. The day camp will culminate with an all-comers community track meet on July 21. Athletes will be able to show off their skills in a low-key competition setting. For more information or to register, visit ultimooktrackclub.com or email ultimookyouthtrackclub@gmail.com.

Improvements on the Way
Redevelopment of Cape Kiwanda Parking Lot now in progress
Development work for Tillamook County’s Kiwanda Corridor Project began in early May with Phase I of the Cape Kiwanda Parking Lot reconstruction (the first of three phases for the lot). Phase I includes the foundation and underground utilities for the new, ADA, gender-neutral restrooms and shower/foot-wash stations. Officials say the new amenities will be located much closer to the beach, on the west side of the parking lot, allowing for locals and visitors to gain easier access from the beach. Phase I will be completed before July 4, at which time construction will pause for the remainder of the peak summer season. Construction work will resume with Phase II beginning in October 2023, followed immediately by Phase III. The final two phases include demolition of the existing restrooms; repaving/grading of the parking lot and Hungry Harbor Road with upgraded stormwater management systems; construction of pedestrian-only pathways to the beach; civic overlook; upgraded refuse and recycling; EV charging stations; information kiosk; safe routes for drop-offs, pedestrians, bikes and the free PC Shuttle; and the trailhead for the Multi-Use Path.
The new lot and all its amenities are scheduled to be ready for use by June 2024.
The design team has also incorporated infrastructure for future wayfinding connections to the five other project elements of the KCP. For more information on other components of the Kiwanda Corridor Project, visit the project website at https://tillamookcoast.com/southcounty/ kiwanda-corridor/.
County transient lodging taxes and dayuse revenues from Pacific City parking lots have funded the county’s KCP planning work to date and are now slated to fund construction.
The KCP connects multiple county
properties and supports the development of other public spaces with what officials describe as a thoughtfully programmed design that disperses crowds, creates opportunities for equitable outdoor play and education, and promotes stewardship of Pacific City and its natural resources as a whole.
The six project elements include Cape Kiwanda Parking Lot, the Jensen Property, the Nestucca Valley Community Alliance Park, a multi-use path, Webb Park, and the Shorepine Village Boardwalk.
The project’s stated values are: Place (Honor the natural and built heritage of Pacific City), People (Enhance the experience for the diverse range of people in Pacific City), Natural Environment (Prioritize sound ecological decisions and support sustainability), Fiscal Responsibility (Make efficient and responsible financial decisions and maintain affordability), Connectivity (Support and integrate multi-modal connectivity in and around Pacific City while prioritizing accessibility) and Safety (Prioritize everday safety alongside emergency management).

Tillamook County accident claims life of Washington woman
A Washington woman died in a two-car collision on the Tillamook County stretch of Highway 101, near milepost 63, on Sunday, May 7.
Oregon State Police, which responded to the collision at 4:26 p.m., say that preliminary investigation indicated a white Honda sedan, operated by Hunter Baltzell, 21, of Aberdeen. Tillamook Co. Historical Society publishes updated edition of Diana Sears’ account of historic Tierra Del Mar
By SALLY RISSEL for the Sun
The Tillamook County Historical Society just printed the book Diana Sears wrote in 2005 about the history of Tierra Del Mar. The book starts with the memories of Diana’s husband, Bill Sears, who grew up on the family farm in Tierra Del Mar. She shared these stories with her Monday Writing Group, who enjoyed them and encouraged her to combine them into a book. What began as a family history grew into a book that encompassed a comprehensive view of the beginnings and growth of this little coastal town.
Diana typed, published, bound the book, added pictures, sold it, and distributed it to family and friends.
The Tillamook County Historical Society felt the book was a priceless account of the town of Tierra Del Mar and needed to be a more permanent book that documented a Tillamook County community.
Tierra Del Mar resident Jim Spring suggested we solicit other long-time homeowners from the town to add their stories. Eight homeowners have added accounts of how much they appreciate being part of the town’s history with their families.
TCHS will have the newly published “Tales of Tierra Del Mar” and all of their books on Tillamook History for purchase at the gathering Saturday, May 27.at the Tierra Del Mar Community Hall. Diana Sears will be there at 11 a.m. to sign books.
While putting the book together, we learned that the Sears farm is 100 years old this year. Dave Sears will share some of their fourth-generation family history at the event.
“Tales of Tierra Del Mar” is for sale this month at the Oregon Coast Bank, along with other Tillamook County history books.
