Welcome to the 2016 Pacific Dental Conference We are very pleased to welcome everyone to the 2016 Pacific Dental Conference! A great three day program awaits all of our attendees. We are very excited to present Pacific Dental Conference in partnership with the Canadian Dental Association this year. It has been seven years since the CDA participated in our meeting. We are sure to be seeing some new faces in the halls of the Vancouver Convention Centre as attendees from across Canada join us in support of the CDA. We have 130 speakers presenting this year on a varied and dynamic range of topics and again are happy to provide you with the widest selection of quality continuing education programming in Canada. This year we have speakers joining us from across North America, the United Kingdom and Asia. Canada will be highlighted in the ‘Canadian Speaker Series’ including topics on sleep apnea, oral cancer, implants, composite restorations, hypnosis, lasers, the effects of gastrointestinal disease and preventing dental decay by natural means. The 2016 PDC presenters are looking forward to sharing their knowledge with you and your entire dental team. The ever expanding PDC Exhibit Hall is a thriving centre of activity over the first two days of the conference with close to 265 exhibitors occupying 625 booths. CDA is delighted to be partnering with the PDC on this stellar event on the Canadian dental meeting calendar. The PDC is an ideal time to learn, connect with colleagues and friends, and find out what’s new in the dental marketplace. And this year there’s no better way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day by gathering “under the rainbow” in dynamic Vancouver, where coastal beauty and unparalleled hospitality abound. The quality and breadth of the CE sessions, along with a dynamic trade show and fun social events, all speak to the outstanding efforts of the local organizing committee who have rolled out the “green” carpet for us. General Information Conference Venues

This year, our conference venues include the Vancouver Convention Centre - West Building, East Building, and the Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel. Refer to the map on page 10 or your “Conference at a Glance” insert for venue locations.

General Information

Registration Area

The registration area is located in the lobby area of Level 1 of the Vancouver Convention Centre - West Building. If you have received your official name badge by mail, please proceed to the attendee bag pick-up table. The attendee bag and program pick-ups are located in the foyer, outside the ballrooms on Level 1 of the Vancouver Convention Centre - West Building, and in the East Building main lobby.

Lunch

A complimentary lunch is served at the Vancouver Convention Centre in the Exhibit Hall between 11:00am - 12:30pm on Thursday and Friday. Please follow the direction of the convention centre staff and lunch area signage. Exhibits Only registration category does not include the complimentary lunches.

Exhibit Hall Reception

The Exhibit Hall reception will feature beer, wine and nonalcoholic refreshments at stations located throughout the Exhibit Hall. Your badge entitles you to two (2) free drinks. Receptions will be held Thursday and Friday between 4:15pm to 5:15pm. Exhibits Only registration category does not include the complimentary drinks.

Session Information

Open sessions are available to all registered conference attendees with the exception of the Exhibits Only category. No additional fee is charged for these sessions. Hands-On courses restrict the number of participants and require additional registration. Registration in these courses is limited and may be reserved through your Pacific Dental Conference online account.

Adding Courses or Special Events

Hands-On courses or special events may be added, subject to availability, until midnight Friday, March 4th 2016 online (www. pdconf.com) and at the registration area on-site. Use your ID and password to access your Pacific Dental Conference account and indicate which sessions or events you would like to add. You can then view your new account balance and make the necessary payments. If you did not receive an ID and password, please email info@pdconf.com for instructions. All session information is included in your badge barcode and is automatically updated when you add courses.

Scanning

All attendees entering an open lecture or hands-on course at the PDC will be scanned upon entering room. The Organizing Group of the PDC would like to collect the number of attendees participating in each session as it helps in determining room allocations and session topics for future PDC’s. Attendees without Green dots on their badge will not need to be scanned out. For those attendees that require session scans for CE reports, please ensure that you are scanned in and scanned out of each session.

Room Capacity

All rooms are set to the maximum capacity allowed by the fire code. Seating space is limited and cannot be guaranteed for open sessions. These are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Rooms open 30 minutes prior to the program time. Please be considerate by silencing your cellular phone prior to entering any of the sessions.

Attire

Please note that temperatures may vary in the meeting rooms, consider dressing in layers.

Coffee Breaks

There are no scheduled coffee breaks during the sessions. Water stations will be provided in or near all meeting rooms.

Child Care Policy

Children and infants are not permitted in any of the conference session rooms. Only children twelve years and over are allowed in the Exhibit Hall and must have a paid ‘Exhibits Only’ badge. Disruptive behaviour will result in the revocation of attendance privileges. Infants are permitted in the Exhibit Hall in a ‘snugglie’ only and strollers are strictly prohibited. The conference venues do not provide daycare, please check with your hotel concierge for these services.

Meeting Room Capacity Protocol We would like you to have the best experience possible at the PDC and want to ensure that everyone finds a comfortable spot in the session rooms with easy access and egress.

Meeting Room Capacity Protocol

The basis for how many people can be accommodated in a meeting room is governed by the Fire Department. Our hard working Room Monitors are in place to ensure that the rules are followed so please respect their instructions. This is what the Fire Department says: Each room has a set capacity for the total number of people allowed in each room – seated or standing. All of the floor plans for the PDC sessions are pre-approved by the Fire Marshall so no chairs can be added to the room above the pre-set number.

What happens when all the seats are filled? Dos: You can stand or sit against the perimeter walls – one person deep. Once the seats are filled the Room Monitor can allow extra people into the room to stand or sit along the perimeter walls. You have to be able to lean against the wall and there should be no one in front of you. Don’ts: No standing or sitting in aisles No standing or sitting in front of any doors – these are fire exits! Holding Seats for Your Friends? Has your friend gone to grab a coffee or is he/she running late? You can hold a seat for them but to be fair to all of the attendees who show up early to secure a seat - the seat you are holding for your friend will be released ten minutes prior to the session. The Hosts of the sessions will make an announcement 10 minutes before the presentation starts that all held seats are now open for the attendees waiting outside. There will be no exceptions here and the Room Monitors will allow people waiting outside to fill all remaining seats that are vacant. Reprinted Name Badges

If you note any spelling errors on the name badge when you receive your 2016 badge, contact the Pacific Dental Conference. Badges returned to the office before March 4th, 2016 will be reprinted at no charge. After March 4th, 2016, badges with spelling errors will be reprinted on-site for a $15 charge. The incorrect badge must be returned. If the original badge is not returned, there will be a $35 charge to reprint the badge.

Refund Policy

Refund requests received in writing prior to February 4th, 2016, are subject to a $25 administration fee plus GST. After February 4th, 2016, no refunds will be granted.

Attendee Substitution

If someone from your office is unable to attend, you are able to replace one attendee for another. The PDC office will require the substitution in writing and the original badge prior to February 19th, 2016 and will be subject to a $25 admin fee. Name changes are not permitted on-site.

Continuing Education / Reporting Your CE Reporting Your CE in British Columbia

It is your responsibility to submit your CE to your regulator. PDC does not submit CE credits on your behalf. For B.C. Dentists, Dental Therapists and Certified Dental Assistants (CDAs), continuing education (CE) credits may be accumulated as follows:

1. Hour-for-hour credit (to a maximum of 5 hours) for visiting the exhibits AND/OR 2. Hour-for-hour credit for eligible session attendance.

Dentists, Dental Therapists and CDAs: Submit your PDC CE credits online by visiting www.cdsbc.org and logging in with your registration/certification number and password. You can also print and complete an individual CE credit submission form (available at www.cdsbc.org/ce-submission) and email it to CE@cdsbc.org. CDSBC reminds registrants to be aware of the maximum limits allowed for certain subjects. Please see the College’s Continuing Education Requirements document for complete information. Note: You must attend the conference to be able to receive credits. Some sessions may not be eligible for CE. This program illustrates a completely different approach to anterior implant cases blocked by multiple interventions for bone and tissue augmentation, amid concerns of root proximity and convergence. The IFAB, (Inlay Flange Adhesive Bridge) marries old-school inlay design to newschool adhesive concepts. A IFAB case will be cemented with simultaneous surgical bulletform subgingival pontic placement to build soft tissue and papillae. A previous bridge on this patient will illustrate the aesthetics attainable. 400 placements over 12 years attest to 98% reliability without greying or debonding.

In the posterior maxilla, residual bone height is limited by the presence of the sinus and often plays a key factor in the placement of dental implants. A sinus lift/graft is the ideal approach (when evaluating an atrophic maxillary ridge with deficiency in vertical height) to build additional bone in order to place a solid and stable implant. Transcrestal approach and Lateral approach will be demonstrated according to indications to overcome vertical deficiencies in posterior maxilla with possible simultaneous implant placements depends on initial stability of the implants at the time of the insertion. As the founding Chairman of the BC Dental Meeting, Dr. Robert Hicks started the meeting format that evolved into today’s Pacific Dental Conference. In 1988, he said “While the quality of the scientific program and the dental trade exhibits must justify the valuable time we set aside to attend continuing education events, we should never lose sight of the importance of the social contact we enjoy when we attend [the Pacific Dental Conference]”. This philosophy has continued to foster the growth of the Pacific Dental Conference to the current day. It is with respect that we have dedicated a lecture to honour the experience and expertise that guided the meeting through its developing years. Samson Ng is a certified specialist in oral medicine and pathology. He is appointed as clinical assistant professor at the UBC, Regional Practice Leader in the Program of Oral Oncology Dentistry at the BC Cancer Agency in Fraser Valley. Dr. Ng also operates private practices in Vancouver and Abbotsford.

This course highlights 21st Century technologies as they relate to forensic dental applications and is designed to delineate the legitimate role of the forensic dentist with respect to dental identification, recognizing and reporting human abuse and the determination of age. Pediatric Dental Complications: Primary Tooth Infection and Trauma

An in-depth review of the complications and procedures when dealing with dental infections and trauma in the pediatric patient. Primary tooth infection treatment, dosing of oral suspension antibiotics, and how to manage primary tooth trauma will all be covered.

Bobby Birdi is a board certified dual specialist in Periodontics and Prosthodontics, in both USA and Canada. He received his DMD from the University of the Saskatchewan and graduate degrees from the University of Minnesota. He is co-director of the Pacific Institute for Education and practices full-time at BC Perio Dental Health & Implant Centres.

The course is designed to help the clinician realize current concepts, techniques, and technologies in implant dentistry that allow predictable surgical placement and restoration of dental implants. Pearls to take back to practice for Monday morning!

Ray Grewal received his Bsc. from McGill and his DDS from Columbia University in New York City. In 2005, he completed his Oral and Maxillofacial training from Yale University. He is a certified specialist in private practice and an Assistant Clinical Professor at UBC. Recently, he became the Head of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver.

Participants will learn how to identify and manage intra-operative and post-operative complications that arise in basic office based oral surgical procedures. Topics to be discussed include broken roots, displaced roots, nerve injuries, oral-antral communications, bleeding, and infections.

Chris Hacker is a Complaint Investigator at the College of Dental Surgeons. Chris is a founding member of the Study Club Alliance of BC, a member of the American Academy of Gold Foil Operators, and the Academy of RV Tucker Study Clubs and serves as secretary for the Associated Ferrier Study Clubs. Dr. Hacker has practised general dentistry or over 30 years. Meredith Moores has been a Complaint Investigator at the College of Dental Surgeons of BC since 2014. She has practised dentistry for 28 years, including provision of geriatric dental services for Providence Health Care (1993 to 2000). She has served on committees related to geriatric dentistry, hospital dentistry and the development of CDSBC’s Guideline for the Early Detection of Oral Cancer. Alex Penner has been investigating complaints at the College of Dental Surgeons of BC since 2002. Alex is a former Deputy Registrar at the College, and worked with the Ethics Committee for six years. He graduated from UBC Dentistry in 1985 and continues to practise dentistry on a part-time basis.

Endodontic Foundations to Predictable Outcomes

Following completion of his science degree in organic chemistry at Simon Fraser University, Jason Conn attended Boston University for both his DMD and Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study in Endodontics where he researched stem cell differentiation for regenerative endodontics. He practices full-time in Langley and Oakridge Centre Vancouver while teaching part-time at UBC.

Minimize the uncertainty in endodontic outcomes. Reduce or eliminate the stress surrounding endodontic treatment and ultimately deliver better care. This is achieved through a systematic approach from access cavity to coronal seal.

Derek Pollard attended Simon Fraser University for undergrad, and then moved to Winnipeg to study both Dentistry and Graduate Orthodontics at the University of Manitoba. Since moving to Kelowna in 2011, he has opened his main practice, Mission Creek Orthodontics, as well as two satellite practices in Merritt and West Kelowna.

Learn how to identify certain, often hidden, patient characteristics that can greatly increase orthodontic case complexity. If these “red flags” can be consistently avoided or addressed, orthodontic treatment can be a predictable, rewarding, and enjoyable addition to your practice.

Tassos Irinakis is a Certified Specialist in Periodontics and an Associate Clinical Professor at the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of British Columbia. He served as the Director of Graduate Periodontics & Implant Surgery for nearly a decade. He is a Reviewer for various scientific journals and well published on Implants and Sinus Bone Grafting. He practices in Vancouver and Courtenay.

Tooth sensitivity is a common complaint and is typically attributed to dentin exposure. There are a number of treatment options available and treatments should be patient focused. It is critical to utilize non-invasive measures prior to more invasive ones such as tissue grafting.

Leanne Turner is the owner of Canadian Dental Staffing, a Canada-wide permanent and temporary dental staffing agency. Reem Atout joined the periodontal department at the University of Manitoba in Sept 2010 after one year teaching at Harvard University. She received a BDS from Jordan in 2000, shortly after she moved to California where she obtained a dental license and practiced general dentistry for few years. In 2006 she joined the University of Alabama to obtain a Master and training in Periodontology.

The ability of dental practitioners to identify the restorative and aesthetic challenges with soft tissue deficiencies, the need and timing of soft tissue augmentation, mainly when it is involving heavily restored teeth, teeth in the aesthetic zone and around dental implants. Frail seniors are often lost as active files in a dental practice due to health and mobility problems and due to lack of an in-house program to maintain contact with seniors. New internet Apps could easily overcome this treatment gap. More patients on file, more oral health, less neglect for frail seniors!

Carlos Llanes graduated from Temple University School of Dentistry in Philadelphia, PA. He has been in private practice in the Phoenix metro area for more than 10 years. He is currently a nationally registered emergency medical technician, an evaluator for the AZ dental state board, and past adjunct faculty at A. T. Still University of Oral Health.

With every second that passes during an emergency without a medical intervention a patient’s survival rate can drop by 10%. Hence the dental team becomes the patient’s life line. Interdisciplinary emergency treatment by the dental team can increase a patient’s survival while reducing complications.

Maggie Wen currently teaches and does research in clinical ergonomics at UBC Dentistry. Wen has been a speaker at a variety of national and international dental conferences and is now the founder of PracWell, an independent ergonomics consulting practice providing one-on-one and group learning opportunities for all dental professionals.
