ANNUAL REPORT
PACIFIC RIDGE SCHOOL
Dear Pacific Ridge Community,
As Chair of the Board of Trustees, I am honored to present Pacific Ridge School's 2023-2024 Annual Report. This report is a testament to the vision of our founders 17 years ago. It reflects a steadfast commitment to providing robust, mission-driven programming and an unparalleled educational experience for every PRS student. Our unique education opportunities through Harkness, service learning, global travel, and other initiatives continue to set Pacific Ridge apart, thanks to the support of our incredible community. As the proud parent of three Firebirds ('22, '24, '27), I have seen firsthand Pacific Ridge's transformative effect on its students.
Your support of the Annual Fund provides nearly 5% of the annual operating budget and impacts every area of the Pacific Ridge experience that tuition alone doesn't cover. From the broad range of academic programming, extracurricular activities, athletics, and community engagement to the recruitment and retention of excellent faculty and staff and the composition of a socio-economically diverse student body for the benefit of every member of our community, we literally could not have accomplished it without you. This year's Annual Fund raised an impressive $955,464!
In closing, I extend my deepest gratitude to every Pacific Ridge School community member. Your generosity and belief in our mission have positioned our school for continued excellence and innovation. With our strong foundation, we are confidently entering the school's 18th year and moving toward a future filled with promise and opportunity. Thank you for being such an impactful part of it!

Meet Barbara Edwards
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF PHILANTHROPY AND ALUMNI RELATIONS
If you’ve attended a Pacific Ridge event in the past eight months you’ve likely had the pleasure of meeting Barbara Edwards! Joining Pacific Ridge School in January as Executive Director of Philanthropy and Alumni Relations, Edwards hit the ground running to help the school achieve its annual goals, while also taking time to connect with families across all areas of our school community.
Before joining Pacific Ridge, Edwards held leadership positions at Scripps Health Foundation and Youth Tennis San Diego. She also served as the Director of the Rancho Santa Fe Education Foundation from 2015 to 2019.
"We are thrilled to welcome Barbara to Pacific Ridge," said Bob Ogle, Head of School. "Her extensive experience and dedication to fostering philanthropy and community engagement both in schools and out will be instrumental in advancing our mission and furthering our impact in the years to come."
Edward’s experience in education organizations includes The Bishops School in La Jolla, where she held various volunteer leadership roles, such as President of the Board of Trustees, Chair of the Head of School Search and Governance Committees, Co-Chair of the School’s Strategic Planning Committee, President of the Parents’ Association and member of the executive committee of the Alumni Association Board. She also served on the development committee at La Jolla Country Day School.
I am delighted to join Pacific Ridge School, which I have always admired as a uniquely kind community that develops young people aligned with its mission," said Barbara Edwards. "I feel fortunate to know some visionary families who courageously founded this innovative school on a strong culture of giving and community engagement. I am excited to collaborate with my colleagues and the community to support the fundraising efforts and advance the school's mission.
In her new role, Edwards leads annual fundraising efforts, scholarship programs, the school’s endowment, and executing major capital campaigns.
Early in her career, she held account management and sales positions at major global media companies Time Inc. Ventures and Conde Nast Publications in Chicago and New York, after starting at two global advertising agencies, DDB Needham Worldwide and the Leo Burnett Company in Chicago. With a bachelor's degree in English literature from Vanderbilt University and Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) and Grant Writing certifications, Edwards brings a wealth of development, strategic planning, organizational transformation, and board governance experience.
ECO ACCOLADES
The U.S. Department of Education named Pacific Ridge School a 2024 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon School award honoree, recognizing the school’s commitment to sustainability. Nominated by the California Department of Education, Pacific Ridge was also selected as a 2024 California Green Ribbon Green Achiever School.
Pacific Ridge is one of only eight non-public schools selected for the award nationwide.
"Since Pacific Ridge School opened its doors in 2007, we have led with environmental sustainability as a core tenet of our program and an ethos of our school,” said Pacific Ridge Head of School Bob Ogle. “Our solar panel addition last year was, in some ways, a final step in making our campus reliably sustainable into the future. We are excited to be honored with the Green Ribbon awards and recognize that the work of maintaining a sustainable community continues in the day-to-day ways in which we live as a school."
The Green Ribbon award is reserved for schools, districts, early learning centers, and postsecondary institutions demonstrating progress in three key areas: reducing environmental impacts and costs, improving health and wellness, and providing effective environmental and sustainability education.
PACIFIC RIDGE NAMED 2024 U.S. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION GREEN RIBBON SCHOOL AND CALIFORNIA GREEN RIBBON GREEN ACHIEVER SCHOOL
Pacific Ridge Sustainability Coordinator and Science Teacher, Melissa Symington says, “It’s an honor for Pacific Ridge to be recognized as a 2024 Green Ribbon School. Since our founding, Pacific Ridge has prioritized environmental stewardship and care for our community through many campus programs and we are proud of the progress we have made in these areas and that our work may be seen as an example for other schools to strive towards.”
The Pacific Ridge curriculum encourages environmental literacy in students from sixth through 12th grade across disciplines through in-depth units of study and project-based learning experiences in addition to opportunities in co-curricular programs. The hallmark of Pacific Ridge’s commitment to green initiatives is environmental stewardship through service learning. Students participate in service-learning projects in collaboration with local sustainabilityfocused organizations from beach cleanups to wildlife conservation efforts. The school’s global travel program allows students to learn about the economics, international sustainability strategies, and place-based environmental concepts.
The school reduces energy consumption using high-efficiency lighting and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, and uses solar panels to generate 85% of the school's electricity.
The school uses 100% reclaimed water and drip systems for irrigation. Pacific Ridge encourages waste reduction with reusable items, compostable tableware, and a three-bin waste sorting system. Ventilation practices that started during the COVID-19 pandemic have become integral to upholding optimal indoor air quality, including HEPA filters and scheduled maintenance on all HVAC units. Also noteworthy is that Pacific Ridge has a chemical management program that strongly encourages purchasing environmentally preferable art and science supplies, furniture, and cleaning products. Pacific Ridge’s lunch program provides local organic food, and nutrition education is available through student health classes, flyers, and wellness programs.
GLOBAL ADVENTURES
6TH GRADE ADVENTURES IN PALI MOUNTAIN
Sixth graders worked on interpersonal and leadership skills while camping at Pali Institute in the San Bernardino National Forest. Students hiked the mountains, conquered rope courses, cheered each other on at the rock climbing wall, paddled kayaks, and stargazed, overcoming challenges and preparing themselves for more adventures to come.
7 TH GRADE MARINE BIOLOGY AND STEWARDSHIP IN CATALINA
Seventh graders built leadership, collaboration, and problem-solving skills while camping on Catalina Island. Students bonded through adventures, kayaking, hiking, and snorkeling. They learned about marine
biology, helped each other put on swim vests, and sought amethysts on the shore, creating memories to share as they advance to eighth grade and step into their new roles as leaders in the middle school.
8TH GRADE WASHINGTON, D.C.: AMERICAN CITIZENSHIP
Eighth graders explored their roles as citizens throughout this six-day visit to our nation’s capital. Students reflected on impactful moments in America’s history at the WWII, Vietnam, and Korean War memorials, and learned about change-makers in American history at the Lincoln, FDR, and MLK memorials.
9 TH GRADE TEAMWORK AND LEADERSHIP IN SEDONA
Our ninth grade headed to Arizona’s Coconino National Forest where diverse landscapes include the famous red rocks of Sedona and Ponderosa pine forests. Students cultivated collaboration and leadership while camping in the backcountry amidst this geological wonderland. Navigating challenging hikes and activities during the day, the ninth graders also planned and cooked meals together, explored creeks and swimming holes, fished, and discovered ways to engage and entertain each other – keeping positive spirits up throughout a journey that asks students to step outside of their comfort zone.
10 TH GRADE –COSTA RICA
Tenth-grade students traveled to Costa Rica for an immersive Central American exploration with Adventures Cross Country (ARCC). Students witnessed the natural beauty of one of the world’s leaders in sustainable development and traveled to places like Mollejones to learn of agricultural service projects and Proyecto Asis to assist in animal rehabilitation.
11TH AND 12TH GRADE
GLOBAL TRAVEL
Students in 11th & 12th grade chose their learning adventure from a variety of destinations including Croatia, Namibia, Vietnam, Japan, Czechia and Austria, Patagonia, and Panama. Following are highlights from two of these impactful journeys.
VIETNAM
Students traveled to Vietnam for an unforgettable adventure filled with cultural experiences and community service. They journeyed to Hanoi and delved into Vietnam's rich history and culture with visits to the Temple of Literature, the Museum of Ethnology, and the Maison Centrale. A traditional water puppet show added a touch of local artistry to their experience.
In the village of Na Chao, students engaged in meaningful community service, helping locals build new roads, plant rice roots, and install solar panels. They also participated in a homestay, fully immersing themselves in Vietnamese culture.
They explored the caves of stunning Ha Long Bay, taking in all the beauty Vietnam had to offer. Students experienced the unique adventure of an overnight train to Hoi An. In Hoi An, they participated in a lantern-making workshop, visited the iconic Japanese Covered Bridge, took a cooking class, and enjoyed a city tour.
CZECHIA AND AUSTRIA
Students experienced a blend of cultural exploration, artistic engagement, and impactful service in Czechia and Austria. In Prague, students participated in unique activities such as glass bowling, a street art spray paint workshop, and a dance workshop. Their time in Prague was enriched by service activities. They met with individuals experiencing homelessness, cooked meals for people in need, toured a shelter serving the unhoused, and received a city tour from a man who shared his experience of homelessness, offering them a new perspective on the city.
In Prague, they also visited the majestic Prague Castle, explored the contemporary and modern art museum, and participated in a Kafka-inspired workshop after viewing the Kafka exhibit.
The adventure continued to Salzburg, where students visited the historic Hohensalzburg Fortress. They continued their service by learning about the impacts of fast fashion and helping an organization sort through clothes for second-hand stores or recycling. With their new knowledge of the fast fashion industry, students took part in a fun thrifted fashion show, showcasing their finds from different thrift stores throughout Salzburg.
Vienna, the final stop of their journey, offered cultural and educational experiences. They visited the Albertina Museum, the House of Human Rights, and the National Library. At the University of Vienna, they participated in the MUT service project for unhoused people, creating care packages full of self-care items. Their cultural explorations included visits to the Belvedere Palace, listening to a piano trio at the Mozarthaus, and exploring the Welt Museum and the Museum of Music. They even had the chance to craft handmade chocolates in the Mozarthaus.

I donate to the Annual Fund as an alumni to Pacific Ridge School because I believe in the transformative power of the quality education the school provides. As with all our efforts to thank and recognize donors, every attempt has been made to ensure accuracy of our information. If your records differ form this report, please contact Barbara Edwards in the Philanthropy Office at 760.448.9849
Pacific Ridge is a nonprofit school. Our financial model is based on fulfilling the year-to-year needs of the school and not on generating revenue. All donations directly support student needs. These gifts are tax deductible. The Annual Fund, which runs each year from July 1 to June 30, provides the foundation for fundraising at Pacific Ridge. Annual Fund gifts cover all aspects of education. Donations provide unrestricted support to be used where funds are needed most. This reliable base helps cover yearly expenses.
