AN EXCITING YEAR LIES AHEAD... The last time there were five Fridays in February was in 1980. The next time won’t be until 2036, so enjoy your Leap Year Day parties, but remember: No drinking on the beach! The good news is that, regardless of your stance on the alcohol ban, the whole issue will be moot when property owners east of the 5 finally get to celebrate the fact that global warming has transformed their inland homes into prime beachfront real estate. This is also an Olympic year; the games hit Beijing in August. Records will be broken, medals will be awarded and, in five years, doping scandals will reveal that the world’s fastest woman actually runs on gasoline. Of course, the globally conscious hope it’s ethanol. Either way, it definitely ain’t the shoes.

shows off her natural beauty. Vegetarian restaurants spice up this month’s TASTE section, while BODY gets you running with tips from Ultramarathon Man Dean Karnazes, who ran 50 marathons in 50 states in 50 consecutive days. In MAKEOVER, a Red Sox fan transforms into California Cool. And in yet another hilarious BLIND DATE, this month at Bar West, three men compete for one woman’s attention in the print version of the hit ‘60s and ‘70s TV show, “The Dating Game.”

In November, we may elect the nation’s first female president (see “Campaign in the Butt,” page 50). The issues are many, the debates heated. Keep your fingers crossed that the television coverage of the elections is more entertaining than NBC’s Olympics broadcast.

I’m no Nostradamus, but I predict that 2008 will be a fiscally strong year for San Diego. The bong shops that can’t sell bongs anymore (thanks to City Attorney, Mike Aguirre) will become tattoo removal clinics, thereby enabling people with neck tattoos to get the jobs they’ve longed for, which will stimulate the local economy, raising property values back up to where they belong. (Hurry, Mr. Aguirre, I’m way deep into my fourth mortgage.)

This issue of PACIFIC provides something of a fresh start for the New Year. In STYLE, Rachael Murphy, the hot Aussie star of VH1’s “America’s Most Smartest Model,”

Have fun. Be cool. Vote! As a farewell to all the head shops, I’m voting for the candidate who, like me, never exhaled.

Eight of your neighbors reveal their New Year’s resolutions

Katy, from Georgiou Boutique (1001 Prospect St., La Jolla), says, ”I plan to start myself on an exercise program. But I know myself and I’ll be lucky if I can keep it up for two weeks.”

Amy, from RT’s Longboard Grill (1466 Garnet Ave., PB), says, “My resolution is to absolutely not have a resolution at all. As a slacker, I should be able to keep it forever.”

Pete, from BeachBikes. net (1211 Morena Blvd., Bay Park), says, “My resolution is to party more and work less. I hope I’ll be able to stick with it throughout the year.”

Andrew, owner of Games On (953 Garnet Ave., PB), says,“This year, my resolution is to play more games. That’s a resolution that I’m guaranteed never to break.”

James, from the W Hotel San Diego (421 West B St., Downtown), says, “My resolution is to stop eating peanut butter with my fingers. I think I can do it for at least six months.”

AIMING

HIGH Nature Photographer, rachid dahnoun, shoots for the mountains By Rebecca Chappell

Though he had just obtained a bachelor’s degree in photography from the Maryland Institute College of Art, Rachid Dahnoun was struggling to decide which artistic angle his career should take. “I was actually doing a bunch of equine photography at the end of college,” he says. Bored with horsing around, Dahnoun desired change. “I got sick of living on the East Coast,” he says. “I just packed up all my stuff and moved to Lake Tahoe, sight unseen.” For an avid snowboarder and rock climber, moving to a bustling mountain town is a no-brainer, but the transition provided something more than just a simple change of scenery. It inspired the thrill-seeking outdoorsman to focus his lens on nature. During his first year in Tahoe, Dahnoun estimates that he spent 120-150 days on the snow and about the same amount of time scaling rock. “In many situations in the mountains, experience and safety come first, and then you can start getting creative,” he says. “A lot of the stuff I’ve done – climbing two peaks in one day, way in the back country or at Yosemite – you can’t even get the shots unless you can physically get up there.” No matter how high he climbs, Dahnoun says, “It’s all about looking at the world through a creative perspective. It’s all the little things around us that make up our environment – most people just don’t take the time to look.” Last March, Dahnoun relocated to San Diego to be a rock climbing and photography instructor at REI, an outdoor enthusiasts’ store in Kearny Mesa. “I didn’t want to leave the mountains, but I knew that San Diego would have more opportunity for me to market my work,” he says. Though he misses Tahoe, Dahnoun finally has something to do other than climb and shoot pictures... surf. Seems like the mountain man has adapted well to life in coastal California.

The nfl sacks santa the Superbowl’s supremacy over Christmas by cookie “chainsaw” randolph

In 1966, Beatle John Lennon sparked public outcry when he boasted, “We’re bigger than Jesus.” He had a point. The Beatles sold way more albums that year. If NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell ever said “The SuperBowl is bigger than Christmas,” here are five reasons why he might be right: 1 The menu is unlimited. We had pancakes and linguica the day Joe Montana won his first ring. Excellent combo, but it wouldn’t fly on 12/25. 2 No rules, no obligations. Only your favorite people get invited to Superbowl Sunday. (Sorry, Aunt Edna, other than the missus, I’m not a lipkisser. You’re out.) 3 No return trips to the mall to exchange those well-intentioned but ridiculous gifts your loved ones thought you’d want. The only chore on SB Sunday is garbage and recycling. 10 minutes, tops. 4 No trees, lights or weird elf costumes, unless you count the Chuckies in Raider Nation, but those generally go into storage after New Year’s Day. 5 Instead of a crappy NBA midseason Miami/Cleveland match-up on Christmas Day, you get the actual championship game of America’s favorite sport.

Yes, football is king. Host any World Series parties last fall? James Taylor singing the Game Two anthem didn’t inspire a mass E-Vite? What do Paul McCartney, Michael Jackson, Mick Jagger, Britney Spears, Diana Ross, U2, Sting, Prince, James Brown, Tony Bennett, ZZ Top, Justin Timberlake, Ella Fitzgerald, Janet Jackson’s right breast and the Florida A&M University marching band have in common? (Besides skinny-dipping in Hef’s koi pond.) That’s right, they’ve all performed at Superbowls. This year’s halftime entertainment is Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, carrying on the grand NFL tradition of hiring acts just a tad beyond their freshness date. Don’t get me wrong; Tom and the boys still put on a great show, and he’s a Rock & Roll Hall of Famer, but when he sings “Runnin’ Down a Leg” and “Stop Draggin’ My Oxygen Cart Around,” you’ll know he’s lost a half-step. It’s all part of the show. The commercials, too. All you need is good company, quality consumables and a skilled DVR operator (preferably you). Don’t look back Santa, the Lombardi Trophy is gaining on you. Chainsaw provides sports commentary on 101.5 KGB-FM radio for a morning show called “Dave, Shelly and Chainsaw.” What a coincidence.

crossing the

line Training with UltraMarathon Man Dean Karnazes. by Bonnie Vandewater (PICTURED HERE)

I’m not exactly an athlete. I find any excuse to neglect exercise and training. Sure, put an ice cream truck in front of me and I’ll pick up the pace, but deadlines, the sniffles, blisters – they’ve all kept me from the gym on more than one occasion. Until now. Running was always the thing I turned to, no matter the time or place. There’s always a trail or treadmill waiting, and running consistently clears my mind of clutter. But I hadn’t taken running seriously until my friend Heather asked me to run the Carlsbad Half-Marathon with her. I committed and registered in October for the January 20 event.

running 350 miles in a non-stop, 81-hour trek; surviving a 135-mile run across Death Valley; swimming across the San Francisco Bay; climbing Yosemite’s Half Dome; and mountain-biking for 24 hours straight. He also ranks number 27 on TIME Magazine’s list of the “World’s 100 Most Influential People.” When I first met him three years ago, I wasn’t drawn to Dean for his athletic prowess. Here was a guy who worked a full-time job, traveled extensively, was a devoted husband and father, ran marathons during the night while his family slept, and still managed to find time to write a bestseller. People like Dean challenge me in the same way a Nike commercial calls me to action. I often over-think things, when really I need to Just Do It. Just write it. Run it. Walk it. Love it. Leave it. Fight it. Work it. Read it. Draw it. Paint it. Whatever it is, just shut up and do it already.

“The best runner is the one who is having the most fun.”

The thing about goals is that it doesn’t matter when you start your journey, only that you take your first step. These steps haven’t come easily for Heather and me. In the few months since we began training, we’ve encountered colds, setbacks, job changes, break-ups, breakdowns and even deaths. We’ve had migraines, cramps, sprains and strains. We’ve shown up to the trails sick, sore, sad and sullen. Still, we run.

Sometimes we’re slow, sometimes we stop and rest, but we stay the course and we finish. Each time we run a little longer, grow a little stronger and find clarity in areas we didn’t realize were cloudy. We’re not competing with other runners, or even with each other. We’re each fighting our own demons, competing against past versions of ourselves – ones that are now mildly distorted and no longer suit us. Deciding we could use some extra motivation and training tips, I consulted Ultramarathon Man Dean Karnazes, whose accomplishments include completing 50 marathons in 50 states in 50 consecutive days;

Dean happened to be in town early in my training, which allowed me to meet up with him to run the first three miles of his 100-mile jaunt from Solana Beach to Long Beach. From there he would kayak 25 miles to Catalina to run the inaugural Catalina Eco-Marathon. Gracious enough to run at my pace, Dean offered many insights, including, “The best runner is the one who is having the most fun.” Huh. I hadn’t considered that before. What was once a grueling activity has become “fun” and something I look forward to. I’m not gonna lie; it’s been a rough week and we might have to stop and rest. Some days we feel like gazelles; sometimes, we feel like tractors plodding along. Still, we’ll see you at the finish line.

Dean’s top five running tips: 1 Run for duration more than speed or distance. Instead of saying, “I’m gonna run for five miles,” say, “I’m gonna run for an hour.” Listen to your body. 2 Invest in a good pair of shoes. 3 Sign up for a running event. Go one step further and do it for a charity. 4 Make running something you look forward to. Vary your routes. Change scenery. For long runs, spend all day running. Put a credit card and cell phone in your backpack. If you run by a Starbucks, step inside and grab a latté. Sit down, enjoy it and, when you step out, start jogging again. 5 Listen to everyone; follow no one. We’re all different. Seek advice. Experiment a lot. But learn what’s best for you.

OUTBACK AND

FORTH Q&A with Rachael Murphy, the hot Aussie star of VH1’s “America’s Most Smartest Model.” By Rebecca Chappell PHOTO BY PEARL PREIS

MEET COVER GIRL RACHAEL MURPHY

PACIFIC ASKS...

Leave it to the Australians to produce a beauty like Rachael Murphy. If she looks familiar it’s because you’ve probably seen her on TV. In addition to appearing in numerous commercials, Murphy competed on VH1’s reality series, “America’s Most Smartest Model.”

Best thing about modeling? Each day you never know what you’re going to be doing.

“I thought I could use the exposure if it was going to be a popular show,” says Murphy, quick to note that she was surprised by the experience. “I was expecting the show to be more along the lines of ‘America’s Next Top Model,’” she says. “I wasn’t expecting to do academic challenges as well as modeling challenges.” Turns out Murphy was almost the most smartest – she finished in the final four, proving her wit and and establishing herself as a face to be reckoned with.

Favorite models? The Supermodels of the eighties! I think that they had a great idea about what they were doing, where they wanted to go – they were definitely entrepreneurial and enterprising.

While copywriting and casting talent for an ad agency in Miami, Murpy would occasionally fill in for absentee models, which is how she got started in modeling. “I took it up really as a hobby,” she says. Now based in Los Angeles, Murphy recently signed with Jet Set Models. And though she’s only 25, she knows her high-fashion modeling days are numbered, which is precisely why she has set her sights on acting. No dummy here.

Best asset? Intelligence.

Model tricks? I brush my lips vigorously with a toothbrush. It gets the blood pumping, so you get that nice reddish color in your lips. I’ll sometimes use toothpaste to get rid of a zit. Must-have makeup? Talika eyelash gel. It definitely works, and it’s an alternative to eyelash extensions or wearing mascara every day. Any vices? I have to have a sugar fix every day, and I don’t care how many calories are in my sweets!

West Coast

TRANSFORMER A Red Sox fan CONVERTS TO California COOL by Rebecca Chappell photos by Renata Amazonas

A Beantown conservative moves to San Diego and discovers that preppy fashion doesn’t cut it on the left coast. PACIFIC to the rescue! “The company I was working for in Boston was letting people go left and right, so I didn’t feel especially safe, job-security-wise,” says Andrew Sherman of his decision to move to the Golden State two years ago. “Also, I was getting tired of defrosting my car and shoveling my stairs.” Before

Sherman, whose wardrobe is limited to polos and button-down shirts, describes his style as “relaxed and

comfortable.” The sports fanatic loves his Red Sox and Syracuse hats, but doesn’t quite grasp the local concept of causal. “Growing up on the East Coast – the beach lifestyle is pretty foreign to me,” he says. “I don’t get West Coast fashion.” Aspiring to fit in, Sherman wrote to PACIFIC. “I wanted a makeover, because I was hoping a professional could point out the things that I don’t pay attention to.” To transform this preppie into a California dude, we’ve assembled a team of beauty professionals from Garage Salon, Mission Tan and The River.

Though the Garage Salon is filled with manly Craftsman tool chests and photos of pinup girls and vintage trucks, Sherman feels emasculated. “I feel like my sister’s friends are about to play dress up with me,” he says, fidgeting as the Garage Salon crew plans his new look.

1 PORE NO MORE

Alysa Pfohl administers Sherman’s 30-minute Men’s Mini Tune-Up Facial. Sherman declines the complimentary chest wax. “No thank you,” he says.

2 color me bad

Next, hairstylist Alli Hayes prepares to color and crop Sherman’s top. “It’s very scary for a guy to dye his hair,” Hayes explains, “so we’re using a demi-permanent hair color to darken up his natural color; it washes out in six to eight washes.” Time to make sure the floor mats match the drapes. Hayes applies the same color to Sherman’s eyebrows, “to bring out his eyes.” After a hypnotic scalp massage and shampoo, Hayes begins to cut and style. Sherman says, “This is awesome.”

3 california glow

No California makeover is complete without a sun-kissed glow, but it’s already past dark. Luckily, the sun never sets at Mission Tan, where Sherman enters a Mystic UV-free spray-tan booth, wearing nothing but a complimentary shower cap. Moments later, a swarthier Sherman emerges from the booth. “I was picturing Ross from Friends and his tanning experience, and was trying not to replicate that,” he says, referring to the “Friends” episode in which Ross’ failure to count to five at the right speed results in his being misted twice on the same side.

4 CLOTHES MAKE THE MAN

At The River, stylist Rhiannon Lieber sends Sherman to the dressing room with an armful of jeans. The first pair is a bust. The second pair is “a little snug in the crotchel area,” Sherman explains. The third pair – a straight leg – is the clear winner. Pants down, shoes and shirt to go. Because of his size (he wears size 14 shoes and extra long shirts), dressing Sherman proves challenging. “I feel like a ‘before’ guy in this,” he says of one shirt that fits too snugly. Lieber completes her masterpiece with a cardigan on top of a graphic t-shirt. Giant leather Converse Chuck Taylors keep Sherman grounded.

How do you feel about your new look? Working in finance, I’ve worn shirts and ties since college. I’m definitely going to wear the cool stuff I got, but I think I kind of jumped into the deep end.

Sherman’s girlfriend says... A complete 180 – totally Californian. He looks really good. I think the makeover may have shaken up his sense of style, which is good. He really likes his jeans, he keeps talking about how soft they are, and I especially like his hair; it really brings out his eyes.

What’s the word on the street? It’s funny that a few girls I work with immediately commented about my hair and tan. Best thing about the makeover? It was cool of all these people to take time out of their schedules to

VEDGE

OUT A guide to San Diego’s vegetarian restaurants

By Nicole D’Alesandro venue photos by andrew jorgensen

Everyone knows that vegetables kick serious butt when it comes to nutrients, vitamins and disease-fighting antioxidants. They keep you slim and looking young, and, with care and attention, can easily become the coolest dish on the table. Unfortunately, like the 90-pound class nerd everyone picks on, vegetables have been bullied by hunky cuts of meat, losing the food popularity battle for years. These days, people’s desire for healthy living is empowering vegetables to stage a comeback. And as these veggie-friendly spots prove, meatless doesn’t have to mean tasteless.

1 SpREAD

2879 University Ave., Hillcrest » 619.543.0406 spreadtherestaurant.com Unless you cook with ingredients from a full garden in your own backyard, eating at Spread is as fresh as you’re going to get. The menu, based on the chef’s daily purchases from the farmer’s market, is comprised of “nouveau comfort food,” which is created by pairing exotic ingredients like flower petals and pomegranate with palate pleasers like caramelized shallots, heirloom tomatoes and freshly made peanut spreads. The chef’s creations have included macadamia rose pesto grits with roasted vegetables and handmade pesto; a chocolate salad featuring Valrhona white chocolate and rock salt atop arugula; and a savory banana curry oatmeal. 2 Sipz Fuzion Café

Their “fusion” style of cooking blends all things Asian with classic American flavors. Packed with families and groups of friends, evenings at Sipz are always lively. To accommodate the bustling crowds, Sipz smartly serves “bowlz” of food in individual portions or family-style. Best bets: anything with noodles, orange “chicken,” the flavored milk teas and the vegan “cheese” cake with raspberry sauce. 5 Cilantro live! 3 lean and green

7825 Fay Ave., La Jolla » 858.459.5326 Lean and Green’s menu (printed on recycled paper, using soy-based inks) features tasty and organic wraps, bowls, salads and smoothies – all with an ecofriendly twist. With drinking cups made from corn syrup and cutlery crafted from potatoes, you’ll feel as good about what you’re eating with as you will about what you’re actually eating. Try the colorful beet and goat cheese salad or the roasted veggie wrap, or build your own creation from an extensive selection of fresh ingredients. For a final kick, throw back a cleansing shot of wheatgrass and power through your day knowing you took one for team Mother Earth.

Cilantro Live! is San Diego’s first organic, vegan and raw restaurant. And as the terms “live” and “raw” imply, all items served at Cilantro Live! are considered to be alive or contain life. Each dish on the menu is prepared using fresh vegetables, fruit, sprouts, nuts, seeds and grains, and without the use of any heat over 95 degrees. The theory behind “un-processing” is that ingredients maintain their proper enzymes and nutrients. First timer? Try the sampler platter, tacos with guacamole or the hamburger. For something sweet, go for a bowl of raw ice cream.

Its dark brown walls and Buddha-inspired décor give Vegan Zone its cool, funky vibe. Small, hip and packed with locals, the eatery stays true to its name by cooking without any animal products – no meat, no dairy, no eggs. Even non-vegans will appreciate the restaurant’s tasty take on classic Asian cuisine: along with curries and sushi rolls, Vegan Zone offers signature dishes like Pad Thai with shrimp (made from soy), crispy wontons filled with soy ham and non-dairy cream “cheese,” and a highprotein salad that includes edamame, avocado and sunflower seeds. If eating vegan cuisine isn’t your thing, have a seat at the bar for a frosty organic beer.

Okay, Salad Style isn’t exactly a vegetarian restaurant, but the “fast food” gourmet salad shop supplies way more than your daily requirement of fresh veggies. Located in downtown’s East Village, Salad Style offers twelve signature salads comprised of organic ingredients to “restore your body.” Try the “Totally Vegan” with quinoa and chickpeas or the “Ahi Tuna & Tomato.” Yummy soups and dressings are made in-house, and each salad is made to order. RIO Carnaval returns to san diego By Nicole D’Alesandro Main photo by Renata Amazonas

As February approaches, wild, colorful parties are about to shake their way through town again. The annual celebration of Carnaval is often associated with Brazilians for their adaptation of an age-old tradition. Centuries ago, Roman Catholics would throw lavish costume parties in anticipation of Lent – the 40-day season of fasting and penitence prior to Easter. Such preLent festivities also took place in France, leading to what would later become known as Mardi Gras. But Carnaval has elements of ancient African culture, too. Europeans traded African slaves to many countries, including Brazil. The slaves brought their own styles of dance and parading rituals to the New World, consequently influencing the rhythmic music and fantastical style of Carnaval. Since then, the tradition has evolved into a worldwide phenomenon. And no matter what you call it or how you spell it, Carnaval is a celebration of life that unites people with one common goal: to party. If you can’t fly to Rio for Carnaval this year, do yourself a favor and make the trip before you’re too old to enjoy it. In the meantime, grab any of the roughly 20,000 Brazilians living between here and LA and get your samba on at one of these San Diego events.

Sinner meet bartender of the month, rodney daylamy

28 years ago, Rodney Daylamy, appeared on Earth (some say from another solar system) with the beginnings of a striped goatee and one mission – to become PACIFIC’s Bartender of the Month. Congratulations, Rodney, your dream has come true. PACIFIC interviewed San Diego’s most animated bartender between his shifts at Downtown’s Sin Niteclub (526 F Street) and PB’s Firehouse (722 Grand Ave.). Most scandalous bartending experience? Remember Margarita Rocks? I worked there for 3 years. What drink do you make best? Doubles. What do you do when you’re not bartending? Plan the next big event. Check GreyStreakEvents.com Does your grey streak give you any

magic powers? Yeah, duh. Besides Sin and the Firehouse, where’s your favorite place to drink? Anywhere in VEGAS. Most embarrassing bartending experience? Bartenders don’t get embarrassed. Any superstitious bartending rituals? I always try to drink more than I sell.

“I don’t have enough…” …shifts at the Firehouse. Visit me during my only shift, Tuesdays at 7 p.m., when you can get a shot and a beer for only $6. What’s your New Year’s resolution? Keep up the good work. If you weren’t a bartender, what would you be? An up-and-coming bartender.

Catch the Streak in action, 9 p.m. to 2 a.m., Thursdays through Saturdays at Sin. Read his hilarious contributions to the Blind Dating Game (page 42).

L O V E LET’S meet tonight’s players Bachelorette, ashley Originally from Seattle, Ashley is currently completing her communications degree (with a double-minor in French and Philosophy) at the University of San Diego. When she’s not studying or working at Jet Set Models, Ashley enjoys reading, snowboarding, four-wheeling and shopping. She hasn’t had a serious relationship in a couple of years. “I like funny, relaxed and intelligent guys who are motivated,” she says. Ashley describes herself as independent. “I’m not a needy girl,” she says. bachelor #1, TRAVIS Travis moved to San Diego from Atlanta three years ago. He sells electrical supplies by day and snowboards and plays other sports in his free time. Single for the past year, Travis has a laid back approach to tonight’s game. “It’s not the end of the world if this doesn’t work in my favor,” he says. “I’m just going to be myself, make my smart-aleck comments, and I should be all right.”

bachelor #2, GOVI When he’s not buying vehicles for a car dealership in Hawaii, Govi, a native San Diegan, bicycles, wakeboards and hones his jiu jitsu skills. “I’m just a whatyou-see-is-what-you-get guy,” he says. Single for only a few months now, Govi wants simply to meet a nice girl tonight. “That’s the number one thing, and hopefully I’m attracted to her,” he says. Govi’s plan: “To give some good answers to the questions.”

bachelor #3, RODNEY In addition to bartending at the Gaslamp’s Sin Niteclub (story page 40) and PB’s Firehouse, Rodney runs Grey Streak Productions, a company named after the naturally occurring stripe in his goatee. The line between Rodney’s professional life and leisure activities is certainly blurred. “When I’m not working, I drink,” he says. “I’ve got a pretty solid chance of winning, especially because she can’t see me. I’m ugly.”

Blind Date Three men compete for one woman’s attention at Bar West By Michael Benninger photos by renata amazonas

Welcome to PACIFIC’s Blind Dating Game at Bar West. Tonight, one fearless woman will select her dinner date from a group of three bachelors whom she has never met. Because she won’t even see the men until after she’s made her selection, Ashley will have to base her decision solely upon the men’s wit and charm, the existence of which she’ll determine through a series of playful questions.

L O V E

Unseen by the men, Ashley sits behind the love screen. As the bachelors assume their positions, the crowd assembles to witness the action. game time! The QUESTIONS continue...

The QUESTIONS begin... Bachelor #1, describe Bachelor #2 for me. Bachelor #2 is a strapping young gent. He’s got a kind soul, he’s very well dressed and he’s got so much gel in his hair that I think he’s a fire hazard. <big laugh from the crowd>

Bachelor #3, it’s Sunday afternoon, and although the Chargers game starts in 20 minutes, I’d really like you to go to Bed, Bath & Beyond with me. What do you do? Did you say that you wanted us to go to bed, then take a bath and then go beyond? <big laugh from the crowd>

Bachelor #2, describe Bachelor #3. Well, I’m pretty surprised he’s still standing –he’s got a few drinks under his belt. Other than that, he seems like a pretty cool guy.

Bachelor #1, if I told you that I don’t so much as kiss a guy until the third or fourth date, and that I’m saving myself for marriage, would you still want to go out with me? I was gonna try to think of something funny to say, but, honestly, if you’ve got a great personality, it wouldn’t really matter to me. <collective “awww” from crowd>

Bachelor #3, if you had $1000 to spend on me, what would you buy me? I’d take your thousand dollars, bet it on a couple of football games, and try to win you some more! Bachelor #1, imagine that we’ve been dating for several months, and I mention that I’d like to bring another guy into bed with us one night. How do you feel about that? If you were going to do that, I would have to walk away. That’s the bottom line. That’s just not going to happen.

Bachelor #2, halfway through our date, Bachelor #3 starts hitting on me and tries to split us up. What would you do? I do jiu jitsu so I’d probably choke him out. <crowd chuckles> Bachelor #3, have you ever stolen a pair of panties from a girl you’ve dated? The girls I date don’t wear panties.

Bachelor #1, I’m pretty naughty and I like breaking the rules. Imagine that we’re at your favorite restaurant one night, and I propose that we dine and dash. Do you play along? I’m down with that, because I’m here to serve every purpose you need, baby! Bachelor #2, for some reason I like seeing men wear women’s clothes. If I bought you an outfit from Victoria’s Secret, would you wear it for me? Umm… only if you promise not to tell my friends. Bachelor #1, describe Bachelor #2 with only three words. He’s funny, outgoing and… kind of average. Bachelor #2, what does your best friend think is your worst habit? Probably my ex-girlfriend. <biggest laugh of the night> Bachelor #1, do you have any ex-girlfriend baggage? Actually, I have her Samsonite in my closet. Bachelor #2, I’m a philosophy buff. What’s your philosophy on life? I think you should stay grounded and don’t let anybody change you. Bachelor #1, would you describe yourself as a spiritual person? Yes, I do like to drink spirits.

1st Elimination Ashley must now narrow the playing field to two. She announces, “All right, Bachelor #3, you’re eliminated.” Rodney steps around the bamboo barrier to reveal himself and his beard to the bachelorette. Game over, dude.

Bachelor #2, look at Bachelor #1 and tell me something that he obviously doesn’t have that you do. I think I would just say… style.

Special thanks to Underground Furniture (undergroundfurniture.com) for providing the bamboo love screen.

Bachelor #1, same question. I think a tiger because my name starts with a “T,” and I like tigers. They’re striped and they have good style.

Bachelor #2, if you were an animal, which animal would you be and why? I’m a pretty big water guy, so I’m going to go with dolphin.

L O V E THE DAY AFTER... Ashley says Govi is a really nice, cool guy, but I wouldn’t want to have a relationship with him. I like more of a scrubby, relaxed, edgier look. He was a little too… polished for me. I only picked Govi, because the girls in the crowd were yelling “Number 2,” but it turned out that they were all his friends. Govi told me that his ex-girlfriend found out about the game, and she almost showed up. Apparently, she’s obsessed with him. I kind of wish that I would’ve chosen Bachelor #1 because he seemed the funniest. Govi and I had a lot in common, though. We talked about politics, religion and philosophy. He’s a vegetarian and, since he’s grossed out by meat, he only had a salad for dinner. I only ordered a salad, too, which sucked, because I really wanted dinner. Bar West is such a fun place to be. It’s really posh, and it’s nice that you don’t have to go downtown for that kind of vibe. We stayed there for a while, then went to his house, where he showed me a video on Ron Paul, the politician that he’s supporting for President. He took me home and gave me a hug and a kiss on the cheek.

and the winner is... Ashley contemplates which bachelor will join her for dinner, then announces, “Bachelor #2, I choose to go on a date with you!” Govi wins.

Travis actually crashed our date for a little bit and sat with me and Govi during our dinner at Bar West. We all kind of got into a conversation. When Govi left for the bathroom, Travis and I exchanged numbers. Bachelor #2, Govi (THE WINNER) says... I had a good time. A handful of my friends were there cheering me on. The best part of the night was when I got chosen. I’m competitive, so I definitely wanted to win. The service at Bar West was really good. Ashley is an awesome girl. She knows what she stands for and she’s smart. We stayed at Bar West for a couple of hours, then came back to my house for a little bit, but we didn’t hook up. I was trying to be a gentleman. We talked about politics, but not in a dorky way. I think there was a little bit of chemistry. We exchanged numbers and I gave her a kiss on the cheek. I’m saving the rest for date number two. BACHELOR #1, TRAVIS (RUNNER UP) SAYS... It was fun. I had a pretty good time. The best part of the night was when I sat down with Ashley and Govi. When he went to the bathroom, she told me how bored she was and how she wanted to pick me. She said that she was only going with the audience when she picked Govi, then she found out that they were all his friends. I ended up getting Ashley’s phone number. I feel a little vindicated.

dinner time Ashley and Govi head to a private table for a delicious Bar West meal. PACIFIC gives the would-be lovebirds some privacy, then calls all four players the next morning for post-date debriefings.

Bachelor #3, Rodney (FIRST TO BE CUT) says... Overall, I had a good time. Who wouldn’t with an unlimited bar tab where you know everybody? Basically, I was planning on losing and I’m glad I did because my girlfriend showed up. It’s Ashley’s loss that she didn’t pick me, though. I had big plans for her, if you know what I mean. My favorite part of the night was the Patron shots. NOW WHAT? Ashley laments not going with her gut. Govi’s holding out hope for date number two. Travis is stoked, because, even though he lost the battle, he might win the war. Against all odds, Rodney has fully recovered from his hangover.

Cosmopolitian sophistication meets seaside warmth at Bar West, featuring quintessential California cuisine, VIP booths, DJ pulpit and dining areas, all orbiting the main dance floor. 959 Hornblend St., PB, barwestsd.com

CAMPAIGN IN THE BUTT It’s time for the presidential candidates to get real

2008 Mud-slinging attack ads are so dull. He said this. She said that. We say, “So what?!” Further, in these TiVo times, does anyone really even watch commercials anymore? PACIFIC recommends that candidates harness the power of Reality TV to influence voters, spice up their campaigns and make the elections more enetertaining. 1. Hillary Clinton appears on “The Girls Next Door.” When Hef grows tired of birthday suits, Hillary can strut around the Playboy mansion in a pant suit (or in Monica Lewinsky’s stained blue skirt). 2. Rudy Giuliani appears on “Wife Swap.” Because even the third time isn’t always a charm. For additional exposure, in light of his already proven ability to clean up a once-dirty, crime-ridden, disease-infected New York, Rudy makes a cameo on “I Love New York 3.” 3. Mike Huckabee appears on “Ultimate Fighter.” With Chuck Norris in his corner, Huck may actually have a fighting chance. Plus, even though he’s out of shape, Huckabee doesn’t believe in evolution, so the whole survival-of-the-fittest thing doesn’t apply. 4. Mitt Romney appears on “Temptation Island.” When you’re allowed a dozen wives, turning down a kiss is a breeze. 5. John McCain appears on “Fear Factor.” Because POWs don’t scare easily.

6. Fred Thompson appears on “Judge Judy.” Seems like the next logical step from “Law & Order.” 7.

Barack Obama appears on “So You Think You Can Dance.” He actually thinks he can, but his appearance on “Ellen” proves otherwise.

8. Michael Bloomberg appears on “The Bachelor.” Time to get hooked! We haven’t elected a bachelor president since Grover Cleveland moved into the White House, in 1884. 9. Dennis Kucinich appears on “Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?” He may not be smarter, but he’s definitely shorter. 10. John Edwards appears on “Deal or No Deal.” Even though his suitcase is empty, he settles out of court with Howie Mandell and walks with another million bucks, just enough for one of his fancy haircuts. 11. Al Gore appears on “The Biggest Loser.” As we near the end of what would have been Gore’s second term, nightmares about Jeb Bush and the Florida recount continue to jar the Nobel laureate from his sleep.
