From the Editor... Winter has broken. Quick, before it’s too late, pack up your skis (or board) and head to the nearest snow. Nope, not Mt. Baldy… Viejas. Seems like each spring, right around the time we set the clocks forward, San Diego provides some vernal surprises. One day it’s sunny and warm; the next day the local equivalent of a blizzard stops traffic on the 8. What a great time of year to look on the bright side–of everything. For example, the crashing economy is actually good news, because now Arizona spring-breakers can’t afford the gas money to come to San Diego. There’s even a silver lining to the alcohol ban: the Zoneys who do make it here won’t know about the new laws, and the revenue generated by their open-container citations can be used to clean up the beaches.
This issue of PACIFIC Magazine celebrates the many facets of springtime in San Diego. Inside, you’ll visit the county’s freshest farmers’ markets and vive la différence in “Paris in the Spring,” a terrific resource for French restaurant lovers. GROOVE rocks with a story about the San Diego Indie Music Fest and, just in time for the Padres home-opener, an indispensable guide to East Village nightlife. Listen to what your neighbors are spring-cleaning in VOICE, and then learn how to overhaul your closet in MAKEOVER. It’s the season of the birds and the bees. And here, in this wondrous land of plenty, where the birds are often pelicans, we anticipate quite a buzz. Lovin’ it!

DIRTY how san diegans combat filth
Bust out the rubber gloves and vacuum extensions. It’s time to get to work on some spring-cleaning. Here’s what a few of your neighbors are scrubbing, straightening, and sanitizing.
Brannon, owner of Prospect Bar & Lounge (1025 Prospect St., Suite 210, La Jolla), knows exactly what he’s cleaning. “I’ll be here cleaning my new restaurant and getting ready for the summer.”
Rayna, from Better Buzz Coffee (1909 Garnet Ave., PB), is doing some digital decontamination. “I’m spring-cleaning my cell phone. There are a lot of numbers in there for random people I’ve met but don’t even remember who they are. It’s time to get rid of them.”
Steve, from Crest Liquor (3787 Ingraham St., PB), will be doing his cleaning behind the wheel. “My car is a total mess. There’s fast food and three-yearold peanut butter cups all over the interior.”
Cristyn, from Tiss Boutique (1447 Garnet Ave., PB), is doing some traditional tidying up. “I am going to spring-clean my closet. It’s full of sweaters and jackets from the winter, and now it’s time to bring in the spring clothes.”
Juan, from the Broken Yolk Café (1851 Garnet Ave., PB), doesn’t have plans to clean anything. “That’s what my wife is for. She’s going to take care of it all.”
Stephanie, from Now & Then Fashions (4150 Mission Blvd., Suite 145, PB), says, “I am spring-cleaning my room. It’s always a disaster, and I can’t live like that anymore.”

Carrie, waitress at the Tavern at the Beach (1200 Garnet Ave., PB), says she’s going to clean up her language. “I’ve been dropping F-bombs like crazy since last fall.”

This year, instead of watching March Madness college hoops on TV, let’s pit classic sports movies against each other to find the real NCAA champion, the National Cinematic Achievement Association, that is. There will be upsets galore. And snubs? Brian’s Song aficionados expected at least an at-large berth. Chariots of Fire won the Oscar for Best Picture— but talk about overrated; didn’t even win their conference tournament. Where’s Jerry Maguire or Breaking Away? Sorry. Maybe next year’s Cinderella. Chainsaw’s Sweet 16 Bull Durham vs. Field of Dreams The inner conflict for Kevin Costner to choose between these two could be enough to make him actually emote. Sarandon in the bathtub beats Lancaster’s corn. Winner: Bull Durham
Caddyshack vs. Raging Bull It’s unfair that these two greats should be pitted in the first round. Bobby De Niro learns the meaning of the word “respect.” How about a Fresca? Winner: Caddyshack
We Are Marshall vs. The Longest Yard (The Burt Reynolds original, thank you.) McConaughey was terrific, and a plane went down, but so did Bernadette Peters! The Mean Machine triumphs. Winner: The Longest Yard
Downhill Racer vs. The Natural You gotta rent Downhill Racer. Redford and Hackman are perfect, as usual, and those 60s chicks are amazing. Of all people, Glenn Close wins this race. Winner: The Natural
A League of Their Own vs. All the Right Moves Remember how Rosie O’Donnell used to love Tom Cruise? Not anymore. Wacky Tom’s 1983 sleeper scores a huge upset here. Winner: All the Right Moves
North Dallas Forty vs. The Sandlot A batch of little league misfits against Nick Nolte’s drinking, dope-smoking, painkiller-injecting tough guy. He may have researched this role a little too much. Winner: North Dallas Forty
Rudy vs. Rocky One play made Rudy a real-life, small-town cult hero. At least Stallone wrote himself a fake world championship. Fiction beats fact this time. The Italian Stallion knocks out the Fighting Irish. Winner: Rocky

Miracle vs. Hoosiers Neither of these teams had a prayer. And while the 1980 USA Hockey Team beat the Commies, Jimmy Chitwood’s jumper won the Indiana state title for Hickory! Winner: Hoosiers
Final Four The winners pair off in a wicked Elite 8 that sees Kevin Costner execute Burt Reynolds, Stallone knock out Tom Cruise, Bill Murray blow up Redford, and the Hoosiers beat Dallas at the buzzer, setting up this epic Final Four: Bull Durham vs. Rocky If both of these were on cable at the same time and you were already past Tim Robbins’ pre-game “stretch,” which would you rather watch for a while? It’s close. Winner: Rocky Caddyshack vs. Hoosiers This one is a blowout. There has never been a more quoted movie than the Chase/Murray/Dangerfield/ Knight classic—much of it improvised. Winner: Caddyshack THE FINAL: Rocky vs. Caddyshack Next time it comes on, focus on Ted Knight’s performance. Chase was great. Rodney was hilarious. Murray was unforgettable. But Ted Knight should have won the Oscar. Every word, every move, every look—and he never sliced. CHAMPION: Caddyshack I’d bet on this one every time. It has it all. Noonan! Brazilian
Powerhouse intense fitness training by the beach by Michael Benninger Photos by andrew jorgensen
“Three…two…one…” Instructor Rodrigo DaMatta counts in a thick Brazilian accent as the pounding music from his iPod fills the Powerhouse Gym in Pacific Beach. Without further instruction, twenty-five women of various ages line up and begin a series of stretches in perfect unison. During the next 90 minutes, DaMatta will guide this group through an intense workout focused on improving coordination, posture, and flexibility while enhancing strength, endurance, and cardio capacity. It’s called “Cardio Power Training,” a lifestyleenhancing method that Brazilians have been practicing for years, and which DaMatta has modified for the American culture. “In Brazil, girls want to have big, thick legs,” DaMatta explains. “But here in America, women don’t want that.
They want nice, round butts and trim legs.” DaMatta says it was this difference that spurred him to create a workout routine that increases strength, without increasing size. His signature Americanized regimen has kept many of his students training with him three times a week for nearly five years. “You’ll see a lot of beautiful people working out here, and that’s a big motivation for newcomers,” DaMatta says. “Many of my students have lost 30 or 40 pounds from C.P. Training, and this is the only exercising they do.”

the only benefits of this training style. DaMatta guarantees better posture and a stronger core through a combination of weights, aerobics, and balance exercises. “This is a great workout for women who spend all day at a computer,” he says. “The waist weights that we use require some heavy lifting, but ensure a safe back because they keep all of the pressure on the legs.”
DaMatta’s approach to group training is unique in that he doesn’t actually participate in the exercises. “I don’t do the class,” he explains. “I coach it. I make sure that everybody’s exercising with the proper form. It’s their workout, not
mine.” Throughout these sessions, DaMatta roams among his trainees, correcting postures and offering tips and reinforcement. Even when he steps out of the room, the workout continues on autopilot. “Sometimes they know what’s going on better than I do.” Men are welcome to attend DaMatta’s sessions, but they rarely do. “Usually when guys come to train with me,” he says, “they can’t finish, or their legs are so sore the following day that they can’t do anything else.” When men do come to see DaMatta, it’s usually for a different reason. “A lot of husbands and boyfriends come here to thank me for helping their wives and girlfriends get back in shape,” he explains. “I really feel like I’m making people’s lives better.”

A stylist helps the fashion-impaired with a springtime closet overhaul by Bonnie Vandewater
In order to know what to wear, it’s important first to understand what not to wear. And honestly, I don’t have a clue. Some pieces in my wardrobe are frumpy, some don’t fit right, and some are outdated by (gulp) ten years. With a busy schedule and a serious lack of interest, I don’t have time to keep up on what’s hot and what’s not. Occasionally I get it right, but sometimes get it oh-so-wrong. I’m not a typical girlie-girl. Instead, you’ll usually find me in a sweater and jeans. (And sometimes, the dreaded sensible loafers.) My utilitarian personality more often causes me to choose function over form, comfort over creative, and practical over pretty. Fashionistas throughout the county would gasp and call my closet a travesty.
prevent me from making any future fashion faux pas. We cast aside sweaters, pants, shirts, dresses… even my shoes were not immune to Andria’s judgment. Andria took one look at my shelves full of solid sweaters and said, “You should be accessorizing the hell out of your wardrobe!” And I do sometimes…when I take the time to think about it. I can throw on a scarf with the best of them, but still—when it comes down to it—I tend to run late and throw something on, and simply get lazy and outdated when it comes to keeping up on trends.
“Fashionistas would gasp and call my closet a travesty”
So, with the help of Andria Marshall, personal stylist and owner of C&B Scene Boutique in Pacific Beach, we decided to get tough and do a little spring-cleaning inside my closet, paring down my wardrobe to
But that all changed with Andria’s help. In my closet, she did find some keepers, and others that just needed a little help. For example, a particular pair of black pants were fine like they were, but would be better to have the pockets removed to get rid of bulk and sew them down for a more tailored look. Also, my hemlines were outdated. Who knew that a few inches could make such a big difference?
Phase one Andria gets down and dirty to help me clean out my closet.
The color and cut works for this sweater, but the chenille fabric is outdated and needs to go.

This plaid, pearl-snap shirt is all kinds of wrong.
Andria doesn’t even have words for this gem.
Finally, something she loves! However, she recommended shortening the hemline.

ANDRIA’s wardrobe TIPS
Now that we’ve made room, it’s time to add a few new items to my wardrobe. ANDRIA AND I HEAD TO C&B SCENE BOUTIQUE FOR SOME PERSONAL SHOPPING.
Purge. (So you can binge.) A good rule of thumb is to purge. The more space you make, the more you can bring home. Purging also helps you mentally regroup yourself and streamline. Purge again. At least twice a year, go through your wardrobe and get rid of unnecessary things, because this facilitates an easier morning when you get dressed. You won’t have so much stuff to weed through because you’ve gotten rid of things that don’t work. Get real. Remain objective and don’t get emotionally attached to your clothing. If you haven’t worn it in three years, it’s like 20 years past due. Get rid of things that are stained, or things that don’t fit. Even if you’re holding on to things because you’re hoping to fit into them again, the items will likely be out of style by the time they fit, and you’ll want to go out and buy new clothes anyway.
Cute and casual, but not quite right.
Sort. Make three piles: donations, trash, and alterations (for the timeless, classic pieces you want to keep). Know your body type. Athletic, curvy, apples, pears—know what clothing works best for your shape. Not exactly the right little black dress. A little too dressy and dramatic.
Since Andria’s visit, I’ve gotten rid of even more items. I’ve also added a few new items to my repertoire to spice things up. From head to toe, I’ve made subtle changes, including a sideways part: my own take on the new asymmetrical style. (Baby steps: I’m not ready for a cut just yet.)
This, however, seems to be just what we were looking for—a great new dress for spring.
And really, that’s what this whole journey was about. It’s not about drastically changing who you are, but more about working with what you have and getting rid of things you don’t need. I already have the scarves and some really cool pieces of jewelry; I just don’t always wear them in the best
ways—or at all. And it’s also true what Andria says about clearing out the clutter so you don’t have to weed through things every day. I no longer stand in the middle of my closet and stare at the mounds of less-than-desirable options. True confession: Even with all my
progress, I kept one of the dresses Andria pulled from my closet. The rest of the items are gone, but when it came down to it, I just couldn’t get rid of my favorite little, plain sundress that feels so much like home. But next time I wear it, you can bet that I’ll be accessorizing the hell out of it.
Give a piece of clothing its own makeover If you’re having trouble getting rid of items, reinvent them. Make a no-sew scarf out of an old T-shirt. (Raw hems are in.) All you need is a cotton-knit shirt and a pair of scissors. 1. Find a shirt that should be retired. 2. Lay shirt on a flat surface. 3. Remove bottom hem and discard, then cut four 1-inch strips beginning at the bottom. Cut at the seam and trim ends with loose seam edges. These strands will become scarf fringes. 4. Cut band of fabric approximately 6 inches wide, then cut in half at seam. This will become the scarf body. 5. With remaining body of shirt, cut out four squares, removing any seams. For each square, begin in the corner and cut a spiral, ending in the center. Each spiral will become a piece of fringe. 6. At each end of the scarf body, cut four ¼-inch slits to thread fringe through. 7. Thread fringes through, and knot. (Tie straight fringes on one side, spirals on the other.) 8. Tie around neck and accessorize! 9. If you have leftover long sleeves, wear them as legwarmers, or put on faux sleeves for a layered look.

Dress to kill. Every woman must have a Little Black Dress [LBD], and every man should have a finely tailored suit. Go for something classic, elegant, and sophisticated—but the fit is most important. Everyone has to dress according to their body type. Accessorize. If you’re going with a big accessory or a statement piece, you need to build the outfit around the accessory and not the other way around. Layer. Got a vintage tee? Layer it with a longsleeved crew underneath. Shoes. Squared = out. Pointed or rounded = in. This just in. Animal prints, “stemmy” florals, tribal prints, safari, bold colors, and asymmetry.

story and photos By Nicole D’Alesandro
Spoiled rotten, that is. Here in paradise, we enjoy year-round sunshine and abundant fresh produce. Gorgeous weather means local growers can produce great-tasting crops to sell at farmers’ markets nearly every day of the week and all year long. Produce sold at large supermarket chains is often shipped from hundreds of miles away, scrubbed tasteless, and stamped with those annoying little stickers. For fresher veggies, try the perfectly ripe, hand-picked varieties sold at local farmers’ markets. The fact that you’ll be supporting the underdog may make the fruits of the farmers’ labor taste even sweeter.

Walking down Garnet Ave. on your way to the beach, you need a beverage to quench your thirst. Since the new alcohol ban makes an ice-cold beer out of the question, swing by the PB farmers’ market for an ice cold bottle of freshsqueezed orange juice instead. Though this is one of the smaller markets around, vendors here sell all of the industry favorites, including big, juicy naval oranges and perfectly ripe strawberries – a refreshing start to your day at the beach.
La Jolla residents rise and shine on Sunday mornings to support local farmers and help to raise money for the La Jolla Elementary School’s art, music, and technology programs. One of the larger markets in the region, the La Jolla market has over 75 vendors, including certified growers and artisans. Stop by the massage area to relax your shoulders, which may get sore from carrying heavy bags of goodies.
Complete with live music, costumed street performers, and a brightly painted hippie bus, the Ocean Beach farmers’ market is a community gathering that showcases the neighborhood’s eclectic ambiance. Wednesday afternoons and evenings hustle and bustle on Newport Ave. with dozens of vendors, artists, and shoppers; the 4:00 p.m. start time means you don’t have to wake up early to get the goods here. w of e f a isit v d eries t n a a e s iend t french r f e som ines f b a s ’ r By Kyle Van Buskirk o g eg i d photos by flávio scorsato n sa The French have exquisite values. Wine, food, friends, and conversation take precedence over everything else. In San Diego, we needn’t behave any differently. To dine in the French style is to discover new cuisine, sample tasty wines, and take the time to enjoy it all among friends and family. Imagine being driven mad by the aromas of fresh artisan breads just as they come out of the oven, or savoring a scrumptious cassoulet that you’ll never forget. Soon, you’ll be craving homemade coq au vin with a side of potatoes au gratin from the Alpes—and anything from a box simply will not do. Although San Diego is far from Provence, sometimes the right light can make our bay look very much like Marseille. Bon Apétit.

It’s about the music. And the art. And film. And ideas. The San Diego Indie Music Fest is the grassroots love child of local musicians Danielle LoPresti and Alicia Champion. This annual one-day event designed to celebrate indie music, film, art, business, and thought has grown to fill seven stages covering a three-block area, presenting over 70 extraordinary independent artists. Indie music goes relatively unnoticed, except by the people in the community that surround it. LoPresti and Champion created this festival where people could come and be blown away by talent they never knew existed. According to LoPresti, “None of these artists are on major labels; none of them have big corporate backing. There are so many extraordinary

musicians you’ll never hear on the radio because they simply don’t fit into the narrow confines of what constitutes a corporate label’s idea of what is a ‘hit record.’ We feel it’s a total travesty that there is so much music and art that hardly gets the attention it deserves.”
the mainstream corporate radio; there’s a lot of good stuff out there. But once you start to discover the solar system of music that lies just below the mainstream, it’s like getting a new set of eyes and ears. We’re not saying ‘down with all that’s corporate;’ we’re just suggesting a balance.”
More than just music, the festival is a whole social idea. When people support independent artists, they’re supporting that which makes each city and community unique. Lo Presti says, “Who wants their city to look like a strip mall, and look like every other city where it’s just brand after brand? Most people love the super-cool, funky things that are artsy and fun about their community. The same principles can be applied to music. You can be satisfied by the music that exists on
Every music submission is listened to with care. Lo Presti and Champion— along with a committee of handpicked established musicians, enthusiasts, critics, producers, and engineers—sifted through thousands of entries to bring you everything including funk, soul, world, techno, electronica, house, acoustic, glam rock, and really just about anything you can think of. This year, their main stage will host remarkable headliners with huge cult
fan bases—Beth Hart; James Marsters; Uh Huh Her (featuring Alicia Hailey founding member of the Murmurs and who also plays Alice on the popular Showtime series “The L Word”), and filmmaker Amber Benson of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” Their indie film stage in the Birch North Park Theatre will show several independent films, one of which won a 2008 Academy Award for Best Documentary-Short Subject. Champion says, “The artistry is so brilliant, refreshing, powerful, and we’re moved beyond words.” As for what she’ll look forward to most, Lo Presti says, “I look forward to seeing a huge diversity of people and the looks of total delight and awe on their faces when they experience these various bands and artists.”

PACIFIC finds out what some local musicians are wearing What’s the one fashion staple you can’t live without? Bart Mendoza of The Shambles “The things that’re probably my defining point are my Beatle boots. Let me put it this way: I have multiple pairs in boxes in my closet waiting for the next pair to wear out. They’re not easy to come by anymore. To me, they’re like tennis shoes at this point, because they’re basically the only shoes I’ve ever worn. Also, I ride a Vespa, and they can take a beating. With tennis shoes, you’re just asking for trouble. So, they’re practical and rather attractive.”

A GUIDE TO EAST VILLAGE NIGHTLIFE
By Josh Board
There was a time when downtown San Diego was filled with X-rated theatres, transients, and lots of crime. Then the completion of Horton Plaza in the mid-80s attracted locals and tourists, causing the Gaslamp to boom. Even as the Gaslamp was burgeoning, however, visitors to downtown continued to avoid East Village, which, until recently, offered little more than warehouses and rundown hotels. Then, in a similar way to how Horton Plaza helped to revitalize its surrounding area, the construction of Petco Park spawned the creation of a hip, urban nightlife scene in East Village. Here are a few of the places that now draw thousands of locals, tourists, and sports fans alike.

The alluring waitresses, known as the Tilted Kilt Girls, are outfitted in plaid kilts, knee-highs, and matching halter tops; male bartenders wear kilts but not halter tops. Patrons may even be able to catch fly balls from the sunny patio, situated just 15 feet from Petco Park’s K Street entrance (adjacent to the right-field fence). And with the Tilted Kilt Girls serving up friendly service and fun, watching the game from here might just provide an even better view than from inside the park itself. Grand opening March 17.
Basic URBAN KITCHEN 410 Tenth Ave. » 619.531.8869 » barbasic.com Basic offers brick oven-style, thin crust pizzas with unique toppings, including mashed potatoes and fresh little neck clams. There’s a limited bistro menu with goodies smuggled in from Extraordinary Desserts. Free WiFi, live jazz on Tuesdays.

Pool tables and shuffleboard make the Jewel Box a great place to wait out rush hour or game-day traffic.
The Fleetwood 639 J St. » 619.702.7700 » thefleetwood.com For an upscale restaurant, the food is surprisingly inexpensive (a juicy filet mignon is just $29). The Fleetwood’s futuristic interior makes for a light and unique dining experience. Later at night, dinner tables are removed to make room for a DJ and dance floor. BEVERAGE of the month 42
PACIFIC congratulates Bartender of the Month, Jamie Rogers. When she’s not serving drinks at the East Village Tavern & Bowl, Jamie is working towards a degree in anthropology. Behind the bar, Jamie is a spunky mixtress that will tell you exactly how it is.
by Lindsay Pomeroy
Thanks to the ingenuity of New York bartender extraordinaire George Jessel, who mixed tomato juice with vodka in 1939, the Bloody Mary has remained a popular hangover cure for seven decades. Jessel named the drink after witnessing a bloody near-death car accident of a girl named Mary. The “Mary” we know today, however, evolved later, when New York bartender Fernand Petiot spiced things up by lacing the cocktail with black pepper, cayenne, Worcestershire sauce, and Tabasco.
San Diego CitySearch’s “Best Bloody Mary on the Beach 2007” award went to World Famous for the restaurant’s Bloody Caliente—400-500 of which they serve each weekend. Bartender Steve Boe says the “caliente” scores high marks on the spicy scale, a five out of five for hotness. The fiery secret is the house-made atomic horseradish sauce. Add top-shelf vodka, finish with the classic celery stalk and a pickled green tomato, and you’ve got a cure for whatever ails you.
WORLD FAMOUS Highlights of World Famous’ contemporary California cuisine include fresh seafood entrees and superior handcut steaks. Enjoy surfside breakfast, lunch, and dinner; watch the waves and the boardwalk action from their patio. 711 Pacific Beach Dr., PB » 858.272.3100

Meet Tom An Iowa farmboy by birth, Tom is a personal trainer and professional photographer now living in East Lake. Clearly not afraid of heights (he photographed and rode along for PACIFIC’s hot-air-balloon blind date last October), Tom is an outdoorsy guy and an experienced climber. He prefers hiking to partying and arrives at Solid Rock with an open mind. “I think this will be fun no matter what.” Tom doesn’t like meeting girls at bars. “I just don’t think it works that way.” He’s looking for an active, attractive, intelligent woman. “But no matter how hot a girl is,” he explains, “without an outgoing, positive personality, it gets old pretty quick.”
Blind daters embark upon a rock-climbing adventure by michael benninger photos by andrew jorgensen
In celebration of spring, PACIFIC takes the blind date concept to new heights—about 30 feet above sea level. This month, our daters scale sheer cliffs, indoors, at Solid Rock Climbing Gym, and then get more intimate at Old Town’s Miso Harney Sushi. Let’s meet the players.
Meet Tarah
getting off the ground
Tarah, an insurance company supervisor, grew up in Maryland and now lives in Pacific Beach. She enjoys running, hiking, and shopping, and says that she “likes to stay mellow on the weekends.” Despite being a lifelong athlete, Tarah is a novice climber and is excited about tonight’s action. “I like a challenge,” she says. Looking for an athletic, intelligent man with a good sense of humor and a high level of integrity, Tarah has only recently returned to the dating scene. She says, “I’ve gone out with a few guys here and there, mostly friends of friends.” Both Tom and Tarah are athletic and both love to hike; neither is a party animal. So far, so good.
Tarah and Tom meet for the first time at Solid Rock. They get acquainted for a few moments before stepping into their safety gear and powdering each other’s hands. [ Continued on page 46 ]

S G N I R ST D E H C A ATT Tarah belays Tom during his speedy ascent to the top of the indoor cliff. (Belaying is a technique for controlling the rope to prevent a climber from falling.) Now, it’s Tarah’s turn to test her skills. Using all four limbs, she climbs while Tom belays below. When rappelling back to earth, Tarah hollers to the photographer, “Talk about ass shots!” After a few more practice runs, the couple is ready to race. Tarah wins, but it’s obvious that Tom has made no effort to beat her to the top. Laughing aloud, the two appear to be getting along well. PACIFIC separates the climbers for mid-date debriefings.
SHE SAID How’s it going so far? I’m having a good time. Tom has a great sense of humor. He has a nice smile, he’s athletic, and he seems excited to be here. I feel comfortable with him. How about the rock climbing? I was a little uncomfortable coming down with my ass hanging out, but I think I did pretty good. The best part was beating Tom in the last rock-climbing contest.
Is this a good way to meet someone? Yes. Meeting over sporting events breaks the ice and lets you see how athletic a person is. Any chemistry? It’s too soon to tell. I’ve only seen him fully clothed. Did you think you were going to get belayed tonight? Did you really just ask me that question?
Enough rock… time for rolls. Tom and Tarah head to Miso Harney Sushi in Old Town. [ Continued on page 48 ]

HE SAID What’s the 411? It’s going pretty good. Tarah’s a lot of fun. She’s a really cute girl, and I’m surprised by how comfortable I feel around her. Can Tarah out-climb you? She was a little hesitant at first, but she scaled right up that thing pretty quick. I was impressed. I let her win, of course. I had to make her feel like she’s the champion, like she has the power.
Does rock-climbing make a good first date? It’s better than getting drunk and screaming at each other over a DJ. Plus it’s physical, challenging, and fun. Any chemistry? Tarah has an amazing personality. We’ll have to wait until after dinner to find out what’s going on there. Feeling Harney? Oh, yeah! Wait, what?

A live DJ amplifies Miso Harney Sushi’s high-energy atmosphere. The place is packed. Tom and Tarah sit in a high-back booth to enjoy the vibe and a delicious meal. They smile and laugh, using chopsticks to eat sushi and to point at the giant fish tank and other highlights of the Harney’s modern décor. Amid the excitement and the sushi and the sake, Tarah misplaces her cell phone somewhere in the restaurant. Panic! Despite a fruitless search for the lost phone, however, Tarah manages to maintain her composure. The two seem to be getting along famously. PACIFIC leaves Tom and Tarah alone for the remainder of their evening. The next morning, the daters reveal how the night ended up.

SHE SAYS
It went pretty well. The food and atmosphere at Harney were fantastic, and the service was great. It was, by far, the best sushi place I’ve been to in San Diego. We stayed at Harney until ten o’clock or so, at which point I was getting tired. Tarah wanted to stay and drink some vodka, but I told her I was going to take off. I drove her home and got her number. We talked about maybe going rock climbing again.
It was fun. We had a really good time together. The food was incredible. I highly recommend the Maui Wowie roll. Harney’s staff was wonderful and attentive. The music was cool and the atmosphere was awesome. Tom and I had good conversation and we laughed a lot. He has a good sense of humor. He drove me home around ten o’clock because he had to get up early. It was a mutual decision.
I felt like I had known Tarah for a long time. I was sort of attracted to her physically, but I didn’t get the feeling that she wanted to take the date further. I wouldn’t have turned her town if she did—I wish something more scandalous had happened. There was definitely no romance, but I wasn’t really expecting any. I did give her a big hug goodbye, though. I’m a gentleman. I think we’ll go out again, but not a one-on-one type of date.
We’d have to go out again to see if there’s chemistry. He takes care of himself and that’s an attractive quality. We’ll just see what the future holds. We both had lot of fun, but there’s nothing juicy or scandalous to report. There was no kiss goodbye, but I don’t kiss on the first date—ever. I’m a classy lady. I don’t kiss and tell either. I’m definitely going to go back to Solid Rock and Harney Sushi, but probably not with Tom.

Both Tarah and Tom got belayed, and they both felt Harney, but the birds and the bees of spring seem to have flown right past them. PACIFIC’s photographer found Tarah’s phone in the rest room, but Tarah wouldn’t say whom she had called. Sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll. Well… one out of three ain’t bad. Or is that two out of four?
