GIVING THANKS Bodiless pumpkin heads sitting by trash cans make November feel like a scene from “Apocalypse Now.” As Jack O’Lanterns wither, and Christmas and Hanukah approach, here we sit in autumnal purgatory. But this is no time for inaction. In light of the fires that have devastated our county physically and emotionally, rather than wait in bored anticipation of whether our stockings will be stuffed with iPods that are incredibly small, let’s focus on giving hugs that are intensely warm. This Friends and Family issue of PACIFIC is dedicated to those whose lives have been uprooted by the wildfires. Though we don’t have the resources to rebuild homes or the financial wherewithal to make large monetary donations, we can and will donate our time and energy. We hope this magazine provides at least temporary distraction. Inside, you’ll meet the families behind the Cohn Restaurant Group and Chris Love Coastal Properties, then get acquainted with the five friends that comprise EnDev, San Diego’s premier entertainment development team. This month’s Passion in the Park fashion spread highlights fall styles and exquisite jewelry from Tiffany & Co. And for some comic relief, we offer 4-Play, the hilarious story of a four-way blind date at Stingaree. While our neighbors are in need this Thanksgiving, we at PACIFIC are grateful that we have cans, blankets and love to give. Be safe. La Jolla sunset obscured by smoke from wildfires. A family photographer captures childhood By Rebecca Chappell

After bidding farewell to the U.S. Air Force in 2003 and spending the following three years at home with her kids, Deb Schwedhelm decided to pursue photography. “I was the person in college that always had my snapshot camera with me,” explains the self-taught fine-art photographer. “I guess it’s always been a dream of mine.” Schwedhelm specializes in natural light photography and strives to capture candid expressions. The latter is easiest when children are in front of the lens, she explains, “because children don’t have any self-inflicted pressure. There’s such a beauty and innocence; there’s so much you can get naturally from a child.”

«

Current projects, like her whimsical “Hand-Me-Down Dress” collection, which features young girls wearing vintage slips, have Schwedhelm setting her sights on more than financial success. “Having my work up in a gallery and getting published, that’s much more of a goal of mine than being the richest photographer in the world, so – would I love to be famous because of it? Heck, yeah!”

“There’s such a beauty and innocence.”

Ironically, Schwedhelm draws much of her inspiration from notoriously edgy photographers and often tests her own artistic boundaries. “Breaking the Rules,” an image of her eldest daughter leaning against a broken down car with a pack of candy cigarettes, is altogether startling and beautifully innocent. “I love moody photos,” says

16

Schwedhelm, “I love evocative photos, and I like to be different, too.”

Although she labels herself a child and family photographer, Schwedhelm is open to anything. She has been dabbling in floral photography and most recently photographed Andy Baldwin of ABC’s “The Bachelor” for Military Spouse magazine. “It’s a growing experience,” she says. “I’m still so new to photography that my journey has truly only just begun.” See more of Schwedhelm’s work at debsphotographs.com.

Love Life Meet CHRIS LOVE AND the FIRST family OF COASTAL REAL ESTATE By Rebecca Chappell PHOTOS BY THOMAS MATHEW

When real estate moguls Chris Love and Bill Clapperton aren’t running between multiple beachfront properties and new construction sites, chances are good they’re out on their bayside patio sipping wine and chatting with passersby. Love started selling houses in 1976, quickly dominating San Diego’s coastal towns and becoming a top producer for Coldwell Banker. Clapperton established his highend construction company, Custom Development, in 1980. Somewhere along the way Clapperton emerged as Love’s contractor of choice. “We go way back before we even got married, so we had a little bit of a working relationship along those lines,” says Clapperton. “Though I didn’t realize she was such a great cook, so I really got a bonus there!”

Love’s company is totally separate from Clapperton’s, but symbiotic by design. NOVEMBER

«

PACIFICbeachmag.com

“It’s kind of like South Fork in the old series ‘Dallas,’” jokes Clapperton, “except we call it ‘Bayside’ – that’s our empire.” It’s an empire that includes trusted friends, one niece and two nephews. Trevor Pike first came to his aunt’s office as a marketing intern while enrolled at SDSU. To his surprise (and Love’s), Pike discovered a passion for real estate. Now having closed sales in the millions, he could work anywhere but remains committed to his aunt and uncle.

“I didn’t realize she was such a great cook.”

The couple married five years ago and opened Chris Love Coastal Properties shortly thereafter. “Bill didn’t want me giving all that money back to Coldwell Banker,” says Love. “We were doing a lot of development on our own, so we just decided to open up our own company.”

32

“We sell the property to him or his people and then he develops the project and we sell off the listings,” says Love. “It’s great – everybody says it’s a marriage made in heaven!”

“Chris is so optimistic with everything – that definitely rubs off on not just me but our whole company,” Pike says. She’s always positive in every situation.” Clapperton is pleased to see family members joining the team. “We know that the business will be in good hands as we transition in some ways,” he says. “That’s the best part of it – it’s by their choice, not something where they were forced into it as many families are.”

H O M E Love and Clapperton look forward to more golf and travel as the younger set assumes more responsibilities, but neither has plans to retire completely. “When we go home, we try to leave work behind, but it’s so hard!” says Love. “We’re getting calls all day long. All night long, people stop by… it’s pretty much our lives, but we love it, we just love it.” Love never envisioned quite the level of success that she and Clapperton are experiencing but isn’t totally surprised by it. “I think people like to work with us because we’re local and they know who we are. It’s not a corporate thing; it’s a family affair. We really, really care for our clients, we really take care of them, and we’ve built our reputation on that.” The thing that makes Love most happy is having teamed up with Clapperton. “We’re so compatible and so complementary to one another in our business that it just makes life wonderful.” Clapperton pinpoints the best part about working with his wife: “I don’t have to wait until the end of the day to see her.” chrislove.com

House of love Bill Clapperton is currently developing 3528 Bayside Walk, in Mission Beach. In April 2008, the structure will be a luxurious threecondo complex with unobstructed Mission Bay views, granite and stone floors and an elevator. Each unit will feature an expansive kitchen, a great room and lots of functional living space. Ground floor: $1.8 to $2 million Mid-Level, Penthouse: $2.5 - $2.9 million

A Family of Fare Meet the family behind the Cohn Restaurant Group By Frank Sabatini, Jr. PHOTOS BY THOMAS MATHEW

Presiding over San Diego’s royal family of restaurateurs is David and Leslie Cohn, who operate their 11 stylish restaurants (ten in San Diego, one in Maui) with the help of their children Jeremy and Jessica. “We really didn’t encourage our kids to get involved in the company,” David says. “They instead realized on their own that they could bring their strengths to the table.” Jeremy and Jessica (who now has two little ones of her own) joined the family business nearly a decade after the Cohn Restaurant Group gave birth to Corvette Diner and Kemo Sabe, in Hillcrest, and downtown hotspots Dakota Grill & Spirits, Blue Point and Gaslamp Strip Club.

After working for a public relations firm in San Francisco and completing a restaurant management-training program, Jeremy became marketing manager of Dakota in 2002. He later played a major role in opening Mister Tiki Mai Tai Lounge and Thee Bungalow. Continual expansion of the family business eventually lured Jessica, who had previously worked for an investment banking company in Manhattan, to assume the monumental

Both children have upheld their parents’ core philosophy of giving back to the community through fundraising projects. Jessica is active with a conservation effort at SeaWorld; Jeremy recently raised $15,000 to beautify the entrance to Ocean Beach. David’s parents, two brothers and sister also live nearby. “We’re blessed because we all live in San Diego,” David says.

task of booking special events for all of the Cohn restaurants.

Thanksgiving will be celebrated at a family member’s home, where everyone will jump in on the cooking. The annual family feast, David says, usually features traditional fare. This year’s exceptions are gourmet corn bread pudding and butternut squash soup created by chef Deborah Scott of Indigo Grill, Kemo Sabe and Island Prime. Those recipes, David notes, will be featured in an upcoming issue of Sunset Magazine. When asked if he envisions his two toddler grandsons carrying the dining torch in their adult years, David replies, “It’s everybody’s dream that things will stay in the family, but we’re realistic. It’s a 50-50 shot that they’ll step up to the plate.” For more info, visit cohnrestaurants.com.

Fit

Eat great foods, not great quantities By Vanessa Van Overmeer

The holidays don’t have to mean adding new notches to your belt. The trick is to control portions. Learn the standards: • 4 oz. of turkey is about the size of a deck of cards and has about 230 calories, with 30 grams of protein. • 1 cup of yams is about the size of a tennis ball and has 60 grams of carbs (depending on preparation, of course). • Just 1/2-cup of cranberry side dish contains an average of 42 grams of sugar. Even if you do control portions, there are so many delicious foods to have portions of that burning all of the calories from your Thanksgiving meal will take some serious effort. If you eat this… Food Calories One glass of wine................................................................120 Six ounces of white and dark turkey................................340 ½-cup of stuffing.................................................................180 ½-cup of cranberry sauce..................................................190 ½-cup of mashed potatoes...............................................150 One slice of apple pie........................................................ 410 ½-cup of ice cream ............................................................145 One cup of coffee with cream and sugar.......................... 50 Leftover turkey sandwich with mayo................................450 Total....................................................................................2,035 You’ll have to walk 20.35 miles! That’s 40,700 steps, assuming you cover about 2.6 feet per step. Calculate your own turkey day marathon on the Thanksgiving Calorie Counter at about.com. Tips: • Don’t starve yourself all day before a huge meal. Instead, eat small healthy meals with lean protein in the a.m. so you are not so ravenous when faced with more caloriedense options. • Avoid munching on too many nuts and cookies that may be set out as snacks. • Fill up on salad, veggies and white turkey meat, so you barely have room by the time the pumpkin pie emerges from the oven. • Enjoy yourself, but remember that you will pay later for overeating now. One day of decadence won’t kill your diet, but gorging for the whole season will. S P O R T S On orders from President Roosevelt, the NFL introduced the “Thanksgiving Classic football game, in 1934, during the depths of the Great Depression. The idea was to give poverty-stricken families something exciting to watch on TV, so they could stop dwelling on starvation, which would in turn boost national morale and reduce the family brawls that became epidemic when Prohibition was repealed right before Thanksgiving of 1933.

Although the facts in the above paragraph are about as firm as mashed yams, football has become as representative of Thanksgiving as turkey, cranberry sauce and Uncle Earl drinking one too many bourbons and chasing Aunt Helen around the living room with a baster. For guys, Thanksgiving is easy as pie. We just show up with a bottle of red, a box from Marie Callender’s and “Get ready for some football! For the ladies, it’s three days of divine creation. Turkeys, hams, sweet potatoes, gravy, green beans, cranberry sauce, stuffing, apples and pumpkin pie. Ladies, you are truly God’s gift. Let the aromas fill the air. The greatest smells your house will ever carry will last until about midway through the second quarter of game two.

Somehow Norman Rockwell skipped the classic American scene of the fellas unbuckled on the couch, nodding off during the Cowboys game. Somebody step on a duck in here? Thanksgiving also means a mandatory trip to the emergency room for the traditional ruptured Achilles suffered during the annual “Turkey Bowl touch football game. Like the B-17 pilot who flew one too many missions, if you play enough Turkey Bowls, your number will eventually come up. Turns out man was not meant to exert with mega-doses of tryptophan coursing through his veins. So what’s the greatest thing about Thanksgiving? The pie? The football? The loved-ones? The leftover turkey/cranberry/stuffing sandwiches? Nope. It’s the four-day weekend and knowing you don’t have to see these people again ‘til Christmas. See you Monday. Don’t be limping. Hey, Uncle Earl, can you bring me another slice of pie? Uncle Earl? Anybody seen Earl? Cookie “Chainsaw Randolph has been swindling management and baffling San Diego radio listeners since 1987. The V in Venue Meet the fiVe cool friends behind six of the county’s hottest venues Mike, Demien, James, Mitch and Dana are buddies, the dream team that comprise EnDev, San Diego’s prolific entertainment development partnership responsible for big names in Finest City nightlife, including Side Bar, Stingaree and The Witherby, in the Gaslamp, and Bar West, in Pacific Beach. EnDev’s upcoming projects include Universal nightclub and lounge, Dish

restaurant and Ciro’s Pizzeria, all poised to change the face of Hillcrest, in February ‘08. The team is excited to re-introduce Top of the Cove, La Jolla’s famed restaurant, in mid-2009. But that’s just business. Take a peek at the human side of five regular guys whose uncommon achievements give the rest of us great places to hang with our own friends.

I

Mike Georgopoulos, Vice President of Operations, Partner Best part of working with friends? If you have to be at work 12 hours a day, six days a week, who better to share that time with than friends? Worst part? It’s never fun to tell someone they’re doing a bad job, and it’s even harder to do when it’s a friend. Funniest experience? Theft of the EnDev cup from Bar West* (full story opposite page). Which EnDev partner’s wallet would you steal? James’, because I want to get a new pair of shoes, courtesy of his Macy’s card. Favorite EnDev property? Ciro’s Pizzeria…because I love the pizza. And Derek, Gino, Bob, and Nick remind me of home. Most treasured possession? My phone, because without it, I can’t breathe. “I don’t have enough…” Time in the day to check all my emails, eat all my meals, and return my Mom’s phone calls.

II

Demien Farrell, President of On-SITE Project Development, Partner Best part of working with friends? The comfort level. You can say anything and joke with each other. Worst part? When personal life issues bleed over into the work place. Funniest experience? There can be some serious rip sessions on each other that we could never get away with if we weren’t friends. Which EnDev partner’s wallet would you steal? Everyone probably has the same answer to this one: James, for his black AmEx. Favorite EnDev property? Side Bar, of course, because it made all this possible. Most treasured possession? My dog. “I don’t have enough…” We probably all have the same answer to this one: Time.

III

James Brennan, CEO, Partner Best part of working with friends? We usually know the way each other will respond or react to things, because we all know each other so well. Worst part? Things are always personal and not always business. Funniest experience? Everyday it is something new. We all tend to play with each other by pranking and pushing buttons. Which EnDev partner’s wallet would you steal? Dana’s. He wouldn’t know it was missing. Favorite EnDev property? Side Bar. It’s the baby who started it all. Most treasured possession? My family. “I don’t have enough…” Time.

IV

Mitchell Compton II, President of Real Estate Development, Partner Best part of working with friends? It doesn’t feel like work, even when we’re in “crunch time” on a deal or issue. Worst part? Can’t think of anything. Funniest experience? Where do I start...? Which EnDev partner’s wallet would you steal? JB’s. That’s an easy one. He’s got the “Black Card”… no spending limit. Favorite EnDev property? Stingaree. It’s so different than anything else around; it’s in a league of its own. Most treasured possession? My pregnant wife and two little girls. “I don’t have enough…” Time in the day!

V

Dana Shertz, COO, Partner Best part of working with friends? Being around people that you know have your back, just like friends are supposed to. Worst part? We don’t get enough time to hang out for fun, because we’re all working 14 hours a day. Funniest experience? One of the guys superimposed my head on a photo of a slice-of-pizza costume we used to promote Ciro’s Pizzeria. The picture was hilarious. Which EnDev partner’s wallet would you steal? I like mine the way it is, empty. It doesn’t bulge out of my back pocket. Favorite EnDev property? I love them all, but Universal could be our best yet! Most treasured possession? A ring my wife had made for me before we were married. “I don’t have enough…” Time to spend with my wife and daughter.

Upon reviewing the video surveillance, it was found that the losing team sent four armed bandits (Dave, Chris, Rod, and Big Game James) to Bar West for the purpose of stealing the coveted championship cup and dumping it in the Las Vegas desert. The losing team was armed with masks, baseball bats, and an army figurine to hold the place of the missing cup. Luckily, Bar West had an insider in Vegas, and the cup was returned with only a small crack. Better luck at the EnDev games next year, STINGAREE!

at stingaree Roommates Chelsea and Rachel have been BFFs for five years. Tonight, PACIFIC tests the bond of their friendship in a four-way blind date at the Gaslamp’s chillest hotspot, Stingaree. After individual mini-dates with Kevin and Eli (also pals and roomies), each of these lovely ladies will have to select her dinner date.

Watch the sparks fly!

MEET KEVIN Born in Cincinnati, Kevin is as a finance manager for a local software company. His last relationship ended about a year ago. “We just grew apart,” he says. “She moved to Florida, and I moved to California.”

42

Roommates Kevin and Eli have been buds since they met as freshmen at Miami University, in Ohio.

Kevin typically dates confident, down-to-earth women who like to have a good time. “If she makes $100K a year, that’d be a bonus,” he says. Kevin is wearing a new shirt he bought just for tonight. “I was going to get a haircut, too,” he says. “But I didn’t. I should have, though. I’m getting shaggy.”

Eli says he’s attracted to women that “take care of themselves physically.” He looks for a sense of humor, and “the ability to hold a good conversation.”

PACIFICbeachmag.com

MEET RACHEL Rachel, originally from Montana, says, “I’m not a girly girl. I don’t get my nails done and I don’t get my hair done that often. I’m more natural.” Rachel’s last relationship ended three months ago. “We decided we were better off as friends,” she says.

Chelsea’s last relationship ended six months ago. “We were from very different places emotionally,” she says.

Though she prefers tall, dark and handsome, Rachel remains open. “If a guy seems nice and he’s fun to be around, then I’ll give him a chance,” she says.

Optimistic about tonight’s, Chelsea picked up a new dress. “Any excuse to shop, right?”

Whether she’ll clash with Chelsea over tonight’s men, Rachel says, “Very rarely do we like the same guy.”

MEET ELI Eli works in sales, but won’t say what he sells. Nor will he impart when his last relationship ended. “Let’s just say, I’m currently not in a relationship,” he says. Regardless of when the relationship ended, Eli seems fuzzy about why it ended. “We were, uh… we were in different… we were just at… it was good. We just, you know. There was no real reason why,” he articulates.

NOVEMBER

MEET CHELSEA Born in Encinitas, Chelsea, who has kissed frogs from both north and south of the 52, is ready to find her prince. “I’ve dated a lot of jerks in my day,” she says, “and I don’t need another one. I like funny guys with great smiles and good personalities. I’m definitely not into blonde blue eyes.”

The four daters meet on Stingaree’s spectacular rooftop patio, overlooking the nightscape. After about 20 minutes of conversation, the foursome pays their respect to the blind date gods with a round of shots. Let the games begin. Continued on page 44.

Thanksgiving Haikus

T H I N K

Thanksgiving Haikus are poems whose syllables count five, seven, five. Turkeys in ovens, cooked long by loving mothers, quite often taste fowl. My uncle drinks beers until he is drunk, which sucks, because I bought them. Time sure is flying. Clocks change on November fourth. Holy, crap! I’m old. Canned cranberry sauce, the best part of Thanksgiving, makes me feel gassy. Football on Thursday gives guys the perfect excuse not to help clean up. Grandma’s loose dentures were unfortunately found in the stuffing. Yuck! Friends and family. I love to have them around. When will they go home?
