It twice Your neighbors say whether they’ve been naughty or nice.

Joe Gaglione, owner of Gaglione Bros. Famous Steaks & Subs (728 Ventura Place, Mission Beach), says, “I’ve been nice because I’m busy building this business. The dog’s been naughty, though. She ate my surfboard last week.”

Travis, from Millers Field (4465 Mission Blvd., PB), says, “I’ve probably been a little of both, but something tells me to expect more coal than toys. Why? I don’t want to get on Santa’s bad side, so I’ll keep it all to myself.”

Katie, manager of Planet Funk in Horton Plaza, says, “I’ve been naughty, because I give my customers crazy deals on the hottest styles.”

Amy, of Sun Diego (3126 Mission Blvd., Mission Beach), says, “I’m on my fourth set of handcuffs this year, so I’d say I’ve been pretty naughty.”

Kelsey, hostess at Offshore Tavern (2253 Morena Blvd., Bay Park), says, “I’ve been pretty naughty this year, because I’m so rebellious.”

Brittany, from Lot 81 (1127 W. Morena Blvd., Bay Park), says, “I’ve been pretty nice this year; it’s my twin sister who’s been the naughty one. Wink, wink.”

Steve Hill, founder of Long Hard Ride (1815 Garnet Ave., PB), says, “I’ve been naughty. Mexico is located way too close to San Diego, and temptation is all over the place down there.”

Jami, barista at CaFfé Italia (1704 India St., Little Italy), says, “I’ve been nice. Everybody I run into seems to walk away with a smile on their face.”

Five year-old Isabella says, “I’ve been nice. I’m a good girl!”

SNOW! Pacific’s premier issue photographer, Christa Renee, captures the California cold By Rebecca Chappell photos by christa renee

V I S I O N

“I would set up little fashion shoots in my garage with the neighborhood kids.” Christa Renee first picked up a camera at age five. By nine she was shooting a bevy of aspiring models. Well, sort of. “I would set up little fashion shoots in my garage with the neighborhood kids,” recalls Renee. “My mom has my first shoot in my baby book. It was just something I thought was fun when I was little; I had no idea you could make a living at it.” When she wasn’t directing fashion shoots, the California native split her time between riding waves, riding horses and ditching school whenever she could. “I started shooting a lot more seriously in high school, because photography was the only class where you could leave campus,” Renee confesses. But

even though she and her friends used class as an excuse to surf, she always had a camera on hand to document their adventures. She went on to graduate from the Art Center College of Design, in Pasadena, in 2001, but the early days represent a time Renee frequently attempts to re-create. “I had such a magical childhood and such a fun time in my teen years,” she says. “My parents were sort of hippies and everything just revolved around camping and surfing and being outside. That fits into my work for sure now. That’s what lifestyle photography is all about.” Renee’s artistic tendencies are fun and sexy, favoring movement and freshfaced realism — a quality achieved by

using medium format film and as much natural light as possible. “If it’s not possible for what I’m going for, I use lights and work hard to make it look natural,” she says. “I use a lot of fill cards, foam core, shiny boards, silks, stuff like that.”

17

Though she may put in a truckload of effort, her acute ability to capture the essence of “carefree” hasn’t gone unnoticed. Renee’s impressive client sheet includes Roxy, Mini Cooper, Hewlett Packard, Apple, Target and this magazine (she shot our premier issue’s cover in January of this year.) “I feel very lucky to say this is what I do,” says Renee, who is clearly a long way from the little girl in the garage and definitely making a living. Feel Great RING IN THE NEW YEAR WITH A KETTLE BELL WORKOUT.

By Rebecca Chappell photo by andrew jorgensen

Boys and girls, let’s face facts. Unless you ignore the homemade treats barraging your office space, starve yourself at every must-attend soiree and turn down each peppermint martini, hot buttered rum or glass of bubbly that comes your way, your clothing is going to be a little snug by month’s end. Not to worry, just add “get in shape” to your list of resolutions and say “hello” to your new friend, the kettlebell. Not to be confused with an actual bell, the medieval-looking fitness tool is more cannonball-with-a-handle, circa 18th century Russia. Long hailed by strongmen, soldiers and martial artists, its notoriety has recently reached new heights thanks to professional athletes and Hollywood A-listers. “The first time I picked up a kettlebell I thought it was stupid,” confesses Sarah Lurie, founder and owner of Iron Core, in Pacific Beach. “But I started just playing around, and I started doing two basic exercises — the Swing and the Turkish Getup — and within about six weeks I noticed an immediate change in my body.” Lurie explains that traditional weightlifting only isolates one muscle group at a time, whereas ultra-dynamic kettlebell movements engage all the major muscle groups simultaneously. This

in turn causes an increased heart rate, which takes care of the cardio component. “Weightlifting has its place, Pilates has its place, yoga has its place, running has its place, but you’re going to get all of the benefits from those four things in one workout with kettlebells,” says Lurie. “Basically, it’s a combination of all these great traditional workouts that we love, but who has the time to go to the gym, spend an hour in the weight room, then run on the treadmill for an hour?” Often credited with having sculpted Matthew McConaughey’s abs, Jessica Biel’s glutes, Penelope Cruz’s shoulders and all the Spartanesque bodies in “300,” the kettlebell workout is definitely for people who aren’t afraid to sweat. “It’s for people who like a challenging workout,” says Lurie. “That said, I have younger athletes who can be in a class alongside a 75-year-old grandmother, and I have obese clients – people who are trying to lose 100 pounds or more – who can use them.” Up to the challenge? Iron Core’s “Start Me Up” class introduces the five basic kettlebell exercises and includes a free group session for $35. For more info, visit ironcorekettlebells.com

A Dallas agency hired Tutt when she was 17, launching her modeling career. She spent the next few years living and working throughout Europe and Asia, until she moved back to Texas at the age of 21. Although she worked steadily in

Dallas, Tutt wanted more. In a classic maneuver, she packed up a U-Haul and moved to the Golden State. Here, she maintains a diverse career modeling lingerie and swimsuits, and acting in commercials. Her current focus? Planning her wedding to fiancée and “Saturday Night Live” funny man, Chris Kattan. The nuptials are set for June 2008, in Yosemite.

What are you most vain about? My hair.

The Bay’s

Ablaze The 36th annual parade of lights illuminates san diego bay By Rebecca Chappell photos by joanne dibona

Ah, yes, ‘tis the season in San Diego. We’ve officially swapped our flip-flops for Uggs, swimsuits for sweaters and board shorts for snowboard pants. But how to rein in some holiday spirit when the weather outside isn’t as frightful as the classic carol would have us believe? Thankfully, the 36th Annual San Diego Bay Parade of Lights is back to provide at least a stocking’s worth of good cheer. And parents, if your idea of a holiday light display is driving through the neighborhood at 5 mph, while your kids whine that they have to go to the bathroom again, you’re in for a real treat.

It’s a friendly competition that proves size doesn’t always matter. Winning is simply based on creative lighting, decorations and the ability to engage the crowd. With this year’s theme, “YO HO HO … A Pirate’s Christmas,” you can bet on treasure chests brimming with jewels and more than a few gregarious swashbucklers.

32

Hosted by the Port of San Diego, the “traditional Christmas present to San Diego from the boating community” sets sail Sunday, December 9, and again Sunday, December 16. The parade begins at Shelter Island immediately following a spectacular fireworks display at 5:30 p.m., and ends approximately two hours later at the Coronado Ferry Landing.

Although the parade is definitely family-friendly, we think it’s got “romance” written all over it. Imagine a sparkling nautical wonderland underneath the night sky – all you need is your sweetie, a blanket for two, and a Thermos filled with coffee and Bailey’s or whatever else floats your boat! The first fondue recipe, unwittingly created by Swiss shepherds and peasants centuries ago, may have read something like this: In a large communal cauldron, melt one wheel of last year’s cheese with two jugs of wine. Enjoy by dipping bite-size chunks of months-old crusty bread into mixture. Hey, winters can be brutal, and you gotta do what you gotta do, right? As it turns out, the shepherds were way ahead of their time. Fast forward to the 1970s, when culinary hipsters heralded fondue for its communal design and sheer simplicity. Like, can you dig it, man? Yeah, we dig it. But like disco music and Pet Rocks, the craze waxed and waned, and fondue sets were relegated to basements and storage closets.

Broth fondue requires little more than cutting up a variety of raw meats, poultry, seafood and vegetables and setting them around a fondue pot filled with the broth of your choice. Your guests then “cook” the tasty morsels by skewering them and dunking them into the hot liquid. To complete this savory experience you’ll want some dipping sauces like Jamaican jerk, dill sour cream, Thai peanut, horseradishcream or mango chutney – all of which can be made from scratch or purchased ahead of time. For the classic Swiss cheese fondue, refer back to ye olde shepherds’ recipe. Combine Gruyere and Emmentaler cheeses with dry white wine, and you’ve got yourself a first course, or an entire meal. You can also combine any number of complementary cheeses like Provolone, Mozzarella and Scamorza or Cheddar, Longhorn and Monterey Jack. For dipping, you’ll want to cube some artisan crusty bread, previously deep-fried tidbits, fruits or raw veggies.

“What was once considered uncool eventually became cool again”

Lucky for the culinary hipsters of this generation, what was once considered uncool eventually became cool again. The Florida-based and ever-expanding Melting Pot now has 120 locations throughout the U.S., including La Jolla, San Clemente, Irvine – and coming soon, Temecula – and fondue sets are among the leading gift items on bridal registries and during the holidays. Although fondue is a unique restaurant experience, it’s perhaps even more fun to make at home. It’s nostalgic, it’s a great way to get people together and, when done right, it’s darn tasty. Best of all, it’s easy.

Dessert fondue can take a few forms but chocolate is the clear winner. Think strawberries, bananas, marshmallows and chunks of pound cake or angel food cake. Don’t be afraid to have fun with this one, especially if it’s a party for two! (Recipe page 36.)

Fon-Dos and Fon-Don’ts

Fondue for Chocolate Lovers

by Nicole D’Alesandro

Thanks to the communal pot, fondue spices up the social nature of group dining. It also has the power to bring out the inner-child in those of us who love to play with food. To look like you know what you’re doing and to avoid fondue faux-pas and a trip to the ER, remember these rules: Fon-do’s • Pace yourself. The trick is to enjoy the experience and fill up slowly. •

36

Choose bread with a crust –it’s more likely to stay on your fork, helping you avoid having to fish for fallen pieces. Pair brandy and orange liqueur with melted chocolate fondue, and wine and beer with a cheese mixture. When hosting a party, provide guests with bamboo skewers if you don’t have fondue forks. Skip chopsticks and toothpicks. Drink hot tea instead of cold water to prevent a painful cheese lump from forming in your stomach.

Fon-don’ts Avoid touching the fondue fork to your mouth and then sticking it back into the communal pot. No double-dipping!

Never stick your hand into the pot and lick the chocolate or cheese off your fingers (unless no one’s watching).

Don’t use Kraft American Cheese when trying to impress. Velveeta is equally inelegant.

Don’t seductively feed your date in a mixed gathering. Save PDAs and racier chocolate parties for more intimate settings. Please!

Don’t burn yourself by touching the metal fork to your lips. It is yummy, but it’s also boiling. And no one at work is going to believe the scab on your lip is from a dining mishap.

Chocolate Fondue (serves about 5 people) INGREDIENTS 8 to 10 ounces good-quality, semi-sweet chocolate 2/3 cup milk 1/3 cup heavy cream 1/3 cup super-fine sugar 1 ounce unsalted butter, diced 1 shot Grand Marnier or cognac (optional) Chop chocolate into small pieces and place into fondue pot. Add milk, cream, sugar and butter. Stir frequently over low-medium heat until chocolate melts into a warm, glossy sauce. Finish off with your choice of liqueur. Do not overheat or bring to a boil. Dip in seasonal fruits and marshmallows or cubed pieces of pound cake.

Flirty Dancing blind daters tango cheek 2 cheek before dining at George’s at the Cove By Michael Benninger Photos by Thomas Mathew

In our final match-making effort of the year, PACIFIC pairs a stunning psychologist with a dashing real estate guru. MEET ALISSA “I can’t believe I’m doing this,” says Alissa, 30, who describes herself as a “genuine person.” Originally from San Juan Capistrano, Alissa lives in North PB and is working toward a doctorate in psychology. “School takes up a lot of my time,” she says, “but I also like running, hiking, traveling and spending time with friends and family.” Regarding the type of guy she seeks, Alissa says, “I like passionate men, though intelligence and a good sense of humor are the most important.” Though she’s excited to meet someone new, Alissa doesn’t plan to fall in love tonight. “It’s kind of hard to meet ‘the one,’ so I’m just looking forward to meeting somebody nice who I can have a good conversation with.” Alissa’s got a case of the jitterbugs. “Dancing has always made me nervous,” she says, “but tonight’s lesson sounds like a good opportunity.” MEET Carlos Carlos, 38, is a native San Diegan and a Mission Beach realtor. “I work to play, so I’ve got to play hard,” he says. Though his professional, athletic (he’s an Ironman Triathlete who frequently competes in charity events) and altruistic accomplishments are numerous, the gent’s true fame stems from his decadelong stint as the Aztec Warrior, Monty Montezuma, SDSU’s flaming-torch-toting mascot. “I like women who are active, outgoing and always trying to better themselves,” Carlos says. Though he has never taken a dance class before, Carlos remains confident. “I can get out there and shake it,” he says. “I did a lot of dancing back when I was the Aztec Warrior.” Did Carlos buy a new shirt or anything special for tonight? “I picked up a box of condoms,” he says. “Just kidding. No, seriously. I’m going to surprise her with a nice bouquet of flowers.”

cheek 2 cheek Alissa and Carlos meet for the first time at Cheek 2 Cheek Dance Studio, in PB. After a brief hello and a handshake, Pierre, the studio’s owner and instructor extraordinaire, whisks the daters onto the dance floor for some Salsa 101. After an hour of dips and salsa (and a little tango), PACIFIC splits the blind date dancers for mid-date debriefings. SHE SAYS What do you think of Carlos? He’s handsome and interesting and very much a gentleman. What did you think of the lesson? I was a little bit nervous, but I feel more confident dancing now. Anything embarrassing happen? At one point, when we were dancing, I kind of punched Carlos in the nose by mistake. He took it pretty well. Carlos danced with Pierre nearly as much as with you. Any thoughts? I liked that Pierre took the attention away from me. Is there any chemistry? I think it’s hard to know if there’s a connection there, but I feel comfortable with him.

HE SAYS What do you think of Alissa? She’s hot. How about the dance lesson? I just kind of went with it. I didn’t feel uncomfortable at all. Can the fox trot? Alissa’s dance skills got better as we went along. Anything unusual happen? Right when we first started to dance, she was like, “Oh, wait, there’s something in my eye.” I thought, she just wasn’t into it, but she actually had something in her eye. That was classic, like it was straight from a movie. Is there any chemistry with Alissa? She was looking me in the eyes and smiling, but it’s too early to tell.

The daters move to La Jolla for a delicious evening at the legendary George’s at the Cove. (Continued page 44.)

Curious at George’s Alissa says Carlos is “handsome and interesting.” He says she’s “hot.” So far, so good. The romance continues at George’s at the Cove. The famed restaurant has been exquisitely remodeled (as you’ve probably heard) and is now the ideal, ultra-modern venue for tonight’s hot date.

SHE SAYS The night definitely went better than I thought it might. George’s was amazing. Carlos is really nice and we had a good time talking and getting to know each other. He had a beautiful bouquet flowers delivered to the table, which caught me off-guard. He told me that he had actually arranged them himself. That was cool. The question of what we’re looking for in an ideal relationship came up, and we’re both looking for what everybody’s looking for: someone nice, sincere, motivated, intelligent, that kind of stuff. Carlos was like a mascot or something for San Diego State. He was showing me pictures of that on his iPhone, which was kind of cool. I think he enjoyed my company, because he seemed to be having a good time and he was comfortable. We stayed at George’s for a few hours, and then went to Jack’s for a drink. He gave me a little kiss on the cheek right before we took off. We’re planning to go running sometime soon, and maybe go do yoga. I don’t really do yoga but he does.

The daters enjoy cocktails in George’s downstairs lounge, then move to the ocean-front dining room for a delicious meal. Finally, PACIFIC leaves the would-be love birds alone. We call the next morning for the juicy details.

HE SAYS We had a blast and hit it off pretty well. The service at George’s was wonderful and the ambiance was impeccable. We had the best seat in the house. Alissa is smokin’ hot, and she has a great smile. She’s aspiring to be the best that she can be, and that is a quality that’s very difficult to find in women, especially very attractive women. There’s nothing more sexy than a very beautiful woman who has the drive to live life to the fullest as well as be educated and close to her family. The dancing was awesome. I was absorbing the lesson, and not just thinking about the date. I could tell Alissa was a little stressed, but she was much more relaxed at dinner. I would like to go back to Cheek 2 Cheek with Alissa if she’d be up for it. From what I gathered, she would probably want to hang out again. I would have loved to have gotten it on with her, but I just gave her a nice kiss on the side of her lips. I don’t like to move too quick, especially under these circumstances.

CONCLUSION Carlos says he kissed Alissa “on the side of the lips.” Alissa said it was a peck on the cheek. A few days after the date, Carlos, Alissa and her dog went for a jog along the Mission Beach boardwalk. We wish them luck, which, given our lackluster track record of making love connections (see page 46), they’ll surely need it. Thank you to the friendly staff at the all new, upscale, contemporary restaurant, George’s at the Cove. From the mix-master’s refreshing cocktails to chef Trey Foshee’s inventive California cuisine, the whole night was an absolute ocean-front pleasure. For an unforgettable dining experience by the coast, take a date (blind or otherwise) to George’s, 1250 Prospect St., La Jolla. georgesatthecove.com Thank you to Pierre and everyone at Cheek 2 Cheek Dance Studio for a delightful dance lesson. With 6,000 square feet, two floating dance floors, and two state-of-the-art sound systems, Cheek 2 Cheek is the perfect place to get your groove on. “Walk in, dance out” at Cheek 2 Cheek, 909 Grand Ave., PB. cheek2cheek.net

Blind Date Retrospective WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

PACIFIC has been playing matchmaker for a year now. In some cases, the daters became good friends; in others, they never spoke again. In one, they fell in love.

Back in May, Danielle, the Brazilian bombshell, met Scott, a gringo from Encinitas. The two shared a sultry blind date Gringo’s Cantina in PB. During the mid-date debriefings, Scott said, “Let’s just say there’s a party in my pants and Danielle’s invited. I plan on getting home around midnight, before she turns into a pumpkin.”

Seven months later, PACIFIC checks in for an update. It turns out that despite Scott’s controversial comments, a true love connection was born. The two have been together ever since. DANIELLE SAYS After the magazine came out, I didn’t imagine that I’d see him again. I didn’t like what he said about inviting me to a party in his pants. He acted like a jerk, but he felt very bad about it. I forgave him and now we look back and laugh at that night. SCOTT SAYS I was trying to be funny, but I’m not as funny as I think I am. Dani was really upset, and I didn’t mean to offend her, so I apologized. She is beautiful and awesome; we’re going to be together for a while. The sparks were flying that night, and they lit a fire that still burns today.

YOU Thank you, loyal reader, for making 2007 terrific at PACIFIC. We’ve enjoyed spending the first 12 months of our lives with you and hope to bump into you at one of our upcoming events. Stay tuned for good times. And the excitement continues… Pacific is proud to reveal that our January 2008 cover model will be Rachael Murphy, the exquisitely sexy Aussie star of VH1’s hit reality show, “America’s Most Smartest Model.” “The competitor/exhibitionist in me couldn’t resist the opportunity to test my abilities and hone my modeling skills in front of a national audience,” Murphy says of her newfound celebreality. “I wanted to gain exposure and experience.” Murphy has appeared in TV commercials for Mervyn’s, Circuit City, Mistubishi Electronics and Southwest Airlines. Joining her in next month’s photo shoot will be fellow VH1 castmember/model (and competitor), Daniel Schuman. JAMES BOND HAS LEFT THE BUILDING. Time to say goodbye to 007. Hello, 2008.

Happy new year!
