APRIL 2017 | @PACIFICSD

I get up in the morning. I take 10 hits of acid. I paint myself purple in my mother’s makeup. And I run down the street, naked and purple, throwing eggs at people as they walk by, singing songs about the freaks coming together in a united way. And that’s an average day, that’s just a normal day.

Flea and Red Hot Chili Peppers headline KAABOO this September in Del Mar. From South Bay to North County to the desert and beyond, San Diego is rockin’ harder than ever. May you find your rhythm, dear Reader. And turn that mothereffer up! [mic drop… feedback]

THE HUMAN CONNECTION

THE FUTURE OF WORK A NEW MOVEMENT IN WORKING We live in an age when employees collaborate not just in the boardroom, but on the soccer field, when teams require not just printers, but video conferencing around the world, when candidates compare not just compensation, but company missions. In this modern landscape, recruitment, retention, innovation, and productivity have increasingly tangible needs. As we understand how much more workspace is than a lease—truly, a dynamic environment that shapes the whole employee experience—it’s time to explore space as the next frontier.

WEWORK EVOLVES SPACE INTO EXPERIENCE At the forefront of this movement, WeWork offers companies of all sizes the opportunity to redefine employee experience through refreshing design, engaging community, and leveraged benefits for all.

In our tireless pursuit of independence and technology, we have ended up with a culture yearning for interconnectedness and real-life conversations. WeWork enables companies to grow together—in the local communities of each building, and in the global community of the Member Network. CEOs give each other advice over coffee, employees come in early for yoga on the rooftop, members in Berlin collaborate on projects with members in Bangalore. We’re social animals for a reason, and thrive when we belong.

HOW WE BUILD THE BEST PLACE TO WORK Our teams of artists, interior designers, and data engineers research histories of buildings, patterns of workplace behavior, and legacies of neighborhoods to transform buildings into organic habitats for inspiration and focus. DESIGN FOR DEEP THINKING Incorporating furniture that evokes the comforts of home, or prioritizing natural light through the use of glass walls and atriums, our designers are experts in creating thoughtful environments. RESEARCH FOR REFINED PRODUCT Sizes of conference rooms are determined based on metrics, and our app supports not only the community network, but also the ways members interact with their space. INNOVATE FOR WELLBEING Unique common areas like terraces, brainstorming rooms, and phone booths are responsive to the professional needs of today’s mobile, creative, and entrepreneurial workforce.

BENEFITS FOR ALL By being a part of the WeWork community, companies access the benefits of leveraged negotiation and shared resources. We partner with providers to offer meaningful discounts on business services and lifestyle perks. Passionate onsite WeWork staff handle amenities, events and support—delighting guests and solving logistical headaches. Because these days, what’s more valuable to someone’s business than their own time? WeWork members range from companies of one to companies of thousands. Lawyers, entrepreneurs, developers, graphic designers, satellite sales teams, nonprofits, and forwardthinking corporations all use WeWork as the solution to their workspace experience. What does the future of your work look like?

You snore so hard that in the middle of the night, your lungs and throat get together and say, ‘Let’s kill this motherf**ker.’”

I was so drunk by the end of the day I was knocking on people’s houses. They’re like, ‘We’re not even a vineyard.’ I said, ‘I don’t care. You’ve got a big backyard, you must be growing something. On that note, here are 10 local bands and solo artists worth tuning into now.

I’m playing a July festival date with Nine Inch Nails in New York.” Of note: In addition to The New Regime and Nine Inch Nails, Ilan Rubin’s other credits include albums and tours with Paramore and Angels & Airwaves. “I want to take my music as far as I possibly can. I think my music is diverse, creative and smart, and there’s something there for everybody. It can’t be pigeonholed.”

Biggest hit: “Habanera” ONLINE: juliavari.com Youtube: JuliaVari Facebook: @JuliaVariOficial (12K followers) Twitter: @JuliaVari (2K followers) Instagram: @JuliaVariMusic (1K followers) Worst day job: “When I was doing musical theater in New York City, I worked at a pastry shop. They did not have ‘artist-friendly’ hours – and I had 6 a.m. shifts. Obviously, that didn’t last long; I was fired after arriving late and half asleep.” If it weren’t for music, I’d be: “Dead.” Next local gig: May 4, The Loft at UCSD (Price Center E, 9500 Gilman Dr., Ste. 0077, La Jolla). Of note: Julia Vari studied voice, piano, theory and composition at the Eastman School of Music and musical theater at New York University. “Probably one of the more unusual aspects of my music is that I sing in eight different languages. I have always loved languages, and it is easier for me to learn, because they say that both bilingual people and musicians are better language learners. Besides the variety of languages, I consider myself a very versatile singer and musician, and people often have a hard time defining my genre, which I think makes my style a lot more interesting.” K.C. Worst day job: “I worked at Home Goods when I was 16 years old. My first and last ‘clock-in’ job.” If it weren’t for music, I’d be: “A chef, maybe. I love food and I cook when I can.” Next local gig: At Bang Bang (526 Market St., Gaslamp) later this spring. Of note: Lee K (short for Krysinski) has a degree in business marketing from California State University, Los Angeles.

Worst day job: “My first job at Sea World. I worked at the Shipwreck Cafe and I hated everything about it – except the free Sea World and Del Mar Fair tickets.” If it weren’t for music, I’d be: “I don’t know, probably lost.” Next local gig: April 9 at The Observatory (2891 University Ave., North Park). Of note: On March 3, Rob Stone performed at a concert headlined by Los Angeles rapper YG at the Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theater at SDSU. “It’s the best gig I’ve done because it was the biggest crowd yet and it was in my hometown.”

“As an artist, it’s hard to understand exactly how others perceive you. I put my heart into all of my work and I have a somewhat specific taste in music, (and) I think it shows. Short term, I’d like to release a lot of the music I’ve been working on this year. Long term, I’d like to start doing events under my label and also working on a (bigger) live show.”

“My music is me, and only I can do me. I just want to make people feel.”

We really love the idea of the album as a whole.” (Scott Tournet) Worst day job: “Certainly not the worst – it was actually one of the better ones – but maybe the one that surprises people was that I was an exterminator.” (Scott Tournet) If it weren’t for music, we’d be: “Lost.” (Scott Tournet) Next local gig: April 29 at Winstons (1921 Bacon St., Ocean Beach). Of note: Elektric Voodoo leader Scott Tournet co-founded Grace Potter & The Nocturnals, which he was a member of from 2002 to 2015. “We’re combining elements of world music, American music, focused songwriting and improvised moments in a way that we haven’t heard anyone else do. Our music is rhythmically powerful and fun, but it also has deeper layers underneath, musically and lyrically, if you want to explore it further. We want to create something fresh and timeless, and to not compromise artistically. Most importantly, though, we want to have fun and savor the journey.” (Scott Tournet)

Established: 2011 Genre: Americana, country, roots rock, jazz, blues, rock Biggest hit: “I Fall in Love Too Fast” ONLINE: nenaanderson.com / brawleyup.com Twitter: @NenaAnderson (1K followers) Instagram: @NenaAnderson (2K followers) / @BrawleyUp Facebook.com: @NenaAndersonMusic (2K followers) / @BrawleyUp (1K followers) Worst day job: “Maybe I’ve been lucky, but I’ve never had a terrible day job. I’ve always tried to make the best of things. There was one time when I worked for a marketing company when I was 19. I lasted one day. That first day of training and work, I discovered it was a door-to-door sales force, trolling the business parks. No thanks.” If it weren’t for music, I’d be: “Designing, cooking, gardening. I still do all those, too. I’d also be stressed out and not very happy – music is the great leveler and release, emotionally and physically. When I’m not playing music, I’m not whole. I don’t play music for other people, I play for my own sanity. Of course, I do need an audience for music to be my job. It’s always astonishing to me that people appreciate what I do.” Next local gig: April 2 (and the first Sunday of every month) at Solace & Moonlight Lounge (25 East E St., Encinitas); April 22 at the Casbah (2501 Kettner Blvd., Little Italy); April 29 at Bar Pink (3829 30th St., North Park). Of note: In addition to her Americana band, Nena Anderson leads the honky-tonk county group Brawley and performs once a month with a string jazz trio in Palm Springs. “I don’t believe in trying to please everyone or smoothing edges to make things palatable. I sing and I write and try to deliver my performances with complete honesty. I want my audience to feel what I felt when I wrote a song. And, for better or worse, I don’t feel confined by any particular genre. I love to nod to my influences, whether with a straight country-style song or jazz-inflected vocal. I often will mix up a set that way. It keeps it interesting for me and for my audiences. Artistically, I’m always trying to find an emotional, gut connection with my audiences, to create an understanding that no one is alone, and that we all share similar ups and downs.”

I find the study of literature incredibly stimulating, and also how the study of literary texts and traditions from around the world can lead to deeply subtle readings of themes explored, from class, power structures and ideas about what’s most commonly referred to as ‘gender’; to religious beliefs, race and racism, nationalism and xenophobia; to taboos surrounding sex and sexuality.” Next local gig: April 22 at Dizzy’s (1717 Morena Blvd., Morena District). Of note: Jazz and funk keyboard legend Herbie Hancock has hailed Joshua White as “a great artist” with “immense talent” and a “daring and courageous approach to improvisation on the cutting edge of innovation.”

EDUARDO CONTRERAS

“It’s not for me to decide what sets my music apart. I want to continue to nourish my love for books and reading, because, ultimately, that is where I find my inspiration for music. Wrestling with challenging text, or even reading for pleasure, I believe, nurtures one’s ability to visualize – and a strong ability to visualize, coupled with a powerful ability to clearly communicate an idea, are invaluable qualities to have as a musician, or more specifically, a musical improviser. For me, the technical aspects of playing an instrument are secondary to the process of cultivating ideas within one’s own mind.”

Worst day job: “Working for a health insurance company and calling hospitals that overcharged. I got fired; I had a big exit.” (Pat Beers) “I was the manager at a back-rehab facility. My staff was fine, but sh***y administrators ruined it.” (Lety Beers) “When I drove a cab in North County; I was robbed several times.” (Brian Reilly) If it weren’t for music, we’d be: “Depressed.” Next local gig: July 14 at the Casbah (2501 Kettner Blvd., Little Italy). Of note: When not performing on their own, The Schizophonics tour with El Vez (the Mexican Elvis) in the Little Richard tribute band The Little Richards. “We try to express ourselves freely on stage and make records we’d enjoy and would like to listen to, with music that makes people move. Music used to be about putting on a show, but a lot of bands now have lost that. We want to combine good music with a visually captivating show.” (Pat Beers)

Nancarrow Graham Nancarrow: vocals, guitar Joe Weisiger: bass Russel Hayden: pedal steel guitar, lap-pedal and harmony vocals Ron Kerner: drums Established: 2011 Genre: Country Label: Currently independent Biggest hit: “Smokey Tavern” ONLINE nancarrowmusic.com Facebook: @NancarrowOfficial (3K followers) Instagram @GrahamNancarrow (11K followers) / @NancarrowOfficial (1K followers) Twitter: @NancarrowMusic (1K followers)

Worst day job: “I can’t say I’ve had a horrible day job, honestly. Not on record at least.” (Graham Nancarrow) If it weren’t for music, I’d be: “Twenty pounds heavier and playing baseball.” (Graham Nancarrow) Next local gig: April 15 at Belly Up (143 S. Cedros, Solana Beach). Of note: Graham Nancarrow is the son of the late San Diego TV newscaster Loren Nancarrow. “We always talked about music, and my dad would quiz me and see if I could guess whatever song was on the radio,” he says. “He taught me a lot. He was a country-music DJ in New Mexico while he was in college, so he was pretty damn good at music trivia.”

“It’s not easy spilling your guts out onto a piece of paper and then singing it over some chords. I’ve learned that songwriting is a craft that takes hard work; and, oftentimes, it’s painful. Sometimes the songs are therapeutic, like writing in a journal. I see it kind of like painting a picture for one’s ears instead of one’s eyes. I don’t want to paint a crappy picture, so to speak. So I reckon heart is what sets us apart. That constant drive to create and not to settle with mediocrity. A lot of people can play, sing and write, or press ‘play’ on their laptop and turn some knobs, and that’s cool. Good on them. One thing, though, if the heart ain’t there, that’s the first thing that shows. And, without it, there ain’t nowhere to go.”

Our song ‘Fort Knox’ went into the iTunes Top 10 after being featured in the 2010 Kia ‘Soul Hamster’ TV commercial.” (David Poole) ONLINE: goldfishlive.com Youtube: Goldfishlive Facebook: @Goldfishlive (205K followers) Twitter: @Goldfishlive (92K followers) Instagram: @Goldfishlive (34K followers) Snapchat: goldfishlive

Worst day job: “We have only ever been musicians and producers. This is the best job in the world.” (Dom Peters) If it weren’t for music, we’d be: “Probably surfing. That’s one reason we moved here from South Africa.” (David Poole) Next local gig: April 8 at Bang Bang (526 Market St., Gaslamp) Of note: In 2007, Goldfish teamed with South African President Nelson Mandela, Annie Lennox, Peter Gabriel, Ludacris and other stars for the 46664 World AIDS Day Concert at Johannesburg’s Ellis Park. “Our goal is making beautiful music, with artistic integrity, that moves people on and off the dance floor. We’re like a weird combination that’s halfway between two oceans of music – electronica and jazz – and trying to bridge the gap. As far as the EDM world goes, (we’re) outsiders… and jazz musicians don’t necessarily understand what we’re doing. But our audience understands. And they’re not over-thinking it. They’re just digging it. And, maybe, that’s what music always should be about.” (Dom Peters)

WHEN WE WERE YOUNG APRIL 8 – 9, 2017 The inaugural run of this Orange County festival lives up to its name with veteran co-headliners Morrissey and Descendents boasting a combined 75 years of making music between them. But the rest of When We Were Young’s eclectic 37-band roster includes everyone from Alkaline Trio, Beach Fossils, Cage the Elephant and AFI (on Saturday) to Dr. Dog, Taking Back Sunday, FIDLAR and Silversun Pickups (on Sunday). San Diego will be sending a pair of representatives to the festival debut as well. Redhot surf punk trio The Frights and legendary local indie rockers Pinback will perform on Sunday. STAGECOACH APRIL 28 – 30, 2017 Cleanup from six completely bonkers days of Coachella will barely be complete when glow sticks give way to cowboy boots, and the twang returns to the desert. Once again, some of country music’s biggest names will headline each of Stagecoach’s three nights: Dierks Bentley, Shania Twain and Kenny Chesney. But check the smaller font, and that’s where things get really interesting. Living legends Jerry Lee Lewis and Willie Nelson will perform, and fans will also get to see Cyndi Lauper, The Zombies, Los Lobos and others embrace their country side. And, in the event that anything goes wrong, Kiefer Sutherland (scheduled to perform on Sunday, April 30) will be on hand to save the day. COACHELLA APRIL 14 – 16 & APRIL 21 – 23, 2017 In a move that caused everyone’s flower crown to collectively wilt, Beyoncé recently decided that maybe it wasn’t the best idea to anchor the middle night of Coachella’s back-to-back weekends while pregnant with twins. Thankfully, fresh from performing at the Super Bowl in Houston, Lady Gaga jumped in. And while there’s sure to be a few fans still upset they won’t get to see Queen Bey, replacing her with the “Poker Face” singer was an incredible save. CALIFORNIA ROOTS MAY 26 – 28, 2017

LIGHTNING IN A BOTTLE It took Lighting in a Bottle (LIB) a few years to find the right home, but it seems as if the nomadic gathering has finally located a perfect site in Monterey County. Founded and facilitated by the trio of L.A.-based brothers responsible for The Do LaB at Coachella, the “transformational” music festival features peripheral experiences including yoga classes, guest speakers and group meditation – all carefully orchestrated in a green-as-possible environment. With each passing year, LIB’s list of compelling performers has grown. This year’s lineup continues that tradition, showcasing Kaytranada, Bob Moses, Bonobo, Rüfüs Du Sol, Richie Hawtin, Bassnectar and Jhené Aiko. San Diego representation comes in the form of the B-Side Players and Israel Maldonado.

It has to be tough going up against two other major festivals (Lightning in a Bottle and Bottlerock) in the same general region on the same weekend. Time will tell if they fall so close to each other next year. Presented as “a movement” versus a music festival, California Roots is based on a foundation of reggae and roots, expanding beyond that realm with hip-hop and downtempo acts. So, while Rebelution, Soja, Iration, Yellowman the Easy Star All Star and San Diego’s own Tribal Theory will take the lead this year, acts like Nas, Jurassic 5 and Thievery Corporation will be on hand to broaden the festival’s already all-inclusive vibe.

Set in the heart of wine country over Memorial Day weekend, this three-day festival is billed as the “first taste of summer.” While the region’s best wine and culinary offerings contribute to the draw, the main attraction here is the roster of headliners, which includes Maroon 5, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers and Foo Fighters. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, The Roots, Ben Harper, Modest Mouse and Fitz & the Tantrums are also among the 80-some acts scheduled to play. Some of San Diego’s best and brightest will also be on hand, namely Andra Day, Little Hurricane, Hirie and the Redwoods Revue. 575 3RD ST., NAPA, CALIFORNIA BOTTLEROCKNAPAVALLEY.COM

FYF JULY 21 – 23, 2017 Boom. And just like that - FYF is all grown up. Founded in 2004, the one-time acronymless “F--k Yeah Fest” has expanded into three days. Held in L.A.’s Exposition Park since 2009, the annual music-centric festival started as a one-day event across multiple L.A. venues and a record store. But FYF has turned into a juggernaut of its own, with a yearly line-up reveal that’s as highly anticipated as any of its counterparts across the country. This year’s recently-announced roster is arguably FYF’s best, with acts like Nine Inch Nails, Missy Elliot, Björk, Frank Ocean, Iggy Pop, A Tribe Called Quest, Anderson .Paak & The Free Nationals, Solange and Run The Jewels scheduled to perform. AUG. 11 – 13, 2017 2017 marks the 10th anniversary of this three-day festival held in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. Featuring solar-powered stages, a recycling program, refillable water stations and workshops that educate attendees on organic food and farming, this Bay Area music and arts festival aims to be as eco-friendly and green as possible. Last year’s diverse roster of performers included Radiohead, Lana del Rey, Ryan Adams, Major Lazer, LCD Soundsystem, Chance The Rapper and the first-ever festival performance from The Muppets’ Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem. (This year’s lineup was not released before press time.) GOLDEN GATE PARK SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA SFOUTSIDELANDS.COM

BURNING MAN AUG. 27 – SEPT. 4, 2017 Not a music festival per se, this event is a citizen-created, art-filled temporary city that exists for nine days and culminates with the ritual burning of a gigantic wooden effigy. What started as a few friends celebrating the summer solstice on a beach in 1986 has steadily grown into a cultural phenomenon that drew 70,000 participants to the desert last year. And while there are musical acts that do play during the decades-old gathering, the focus continues to be on the art of the event. 2017 attendees are being asked to create interactive rites, processions, elaborate images, shrines, temples and visions that fall under this year’s theme of “radical ritual.” BLACK ROCK DESERT, NEVADA BURNINGMAN.ORG

SEPT. 8 – 10, 2017 Tucked along a beautiful stretch of the Pacific, Doheny State Beach has served as a prime festival spot for decades. The annual blues festival held at the scenic locale turns 20 this year, and the longrunning Doheny Days Festival hosted bands including Jane’s Addiction, Weezer and The Flaming Lips over the years. Ohana, which has grown since its inception, now runs for three days, raises money and awareness for coastal parks and has pulled out a lot of the stops in its bookings. This year’s 24-band lineup boasts big names including Eddie Vedder, Jack Johnson, Social Distortion, Fiona Apple, The Pixies and TV on the Radio. DOHENY STATE BEACH, 25300 DANA POINT HARBOR DR. CRSSD FALL 2017 Although the lineup won’t likely drop until summer, set aside a few weekends in late September/early October for the fall version of CRSSD Fest. In just a few years, this bi-annual festival at Waterfront Park has become a premier EDM destination, attracting some of the biggest DJs and producers on the globe. In March, CRSSD’s spring edition featured Flume, Marian Hill, Bob Moses, Claude Von Stroke, Alunageorge and more. Their yearcloser should be even better. WATERFRONT PARK, 1600 PACIFIC HWY. KAABOO SEPT. 15 – 17, 2017 It’s baaaaaaack. And it’s bigger than ever. Last year, the music, comedy, art and food fest in San Diego’s backyard doubled down on its 2015 debut with a lineup that included Aerosmith, The Chainsmokers, Fall Out Boy, Lenny Kravitz and Cypress Hill. Now, this annual festival-on-the-rise continues its upward trajectory with headlining performances by Red Hot Chili Peppers, P!nk, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers and Muse. Weezer, Jane’s Addiction, Ice Cube, Logic, David Guetta, Garbage and Kesha will help to round out the 70-plus band roster. Recent San Diego Music Award winner Trouble in the Wind will also be on-hand to represent Carlsbad, and there will even be a set by 15-time NBA AllStar Shaquille O’Neal. Taking place on the Lake Tahoe Community College field, the three-day experience trades warm weather and flip-flops for fresh powder and snow boots, combining skiing and snowboarding with live music and a New Year’s Eve celebration. REYKA

MEET THE ICELANDIC V O D K A’ S E N E R G E T I C A M B A S S A D O R BY MICHAEL BENNINGER

To say that Trevor Schneider has a cool job is an understatement. As the U.S. Brand Ambassador for Reyka Vodka, he travels the world, educating hospitality heroes about the virtues of the first Icelandic vodka and the only one that leaves the country. “It’s really a dream job for me in a lot of ways,” Schneider says. “The opportunity to get on a plane and be in front of people in a matter of hours presenting and sharing the story of Reyka and my story of hospitality – it’s an amazing thing.” A New Jersey native, Schneider currently calls Manhattan’s lower-east side home during the few times of the year he’s not on the road. DESCRIBE REY KA’S TAST E? It starts off a little bit sweet, moves onto citrus notes and ends with a white-pepper-like taste. It’s very unique. Vodka’s technically supposed to be colorless, odorless and flavorless. But, as it is, Reyka has a little bit of character. I describe it as a ‘vodka-flavored vodka’ because of the resources we use. We want to make sure that the spirit of Iceland stays in the spirit. It’s a terrible pun, but it really works. WHAT’S UNIQUE ABOUT REYKA’S DISTILLATION PROCESS? Iceland has arctic spring water, which is already some of the purest water in the world – even purer than most bottled waters. The water we use for Reyka is completely untreated and makes up for 60 percent of the final product. There’s also a tremendous amount of geothermal energy in Iceland, and our distillery is 100 percent powered by it, leaving no carbon footprint whatsoever. And we utilize lava rock as our filtration mechanism. It’s a natural, effective and efficient way to remove impurities from our spirit. H OW’D YOU GET T HI S J OB? I fell into hospitality after college. I had a degree in computer science and ended up working in that field for a little while. Not being emotionally or mentally fulfilled, I quit and became a high-school substitute. Then, I decided I wanted to get into TV and film acting. And what happens when you get into entertainment in the (New York) City is you get into hospitality. I booked a couple acting gigs, but wasn’t so successful. Yet, I was making money in hospitality and I was having fun. I fell in love with the job and the bar became my stage. Then I started to travel with this because my personality is a bit larger than life. And I just kept taking it to the next level. That was 10 years ago, and what I do now is what I was attempting to do then.

T R E VO R’ S R E Y K A - M E N DAT I O N S 5:1 MARTINI “No offense, Ian Fleming, but not the James Bond-style. This stirred, not shaken variation allows the character and taste-profile of Reyka to stand out in a good way.”

THE SOUTHSIDE “This classic cocktail from Chicago includes lime juice, Reyka and a little bit of simple syrup. Shake, add mint and serve in a couple glass. It’s approachable, but sophisticated.”

PEQUEÑO DIABLO “This ‘little devil’ includes Reyka vodka, Ancho Reyes chile liqueur, maple syrup and fresh lemon juice, then it’s topped with soda. It’s a long, very refreshing drink. In California, it can be good for all times of the year, but back east, it’s more seasonal.”

B LO O DY M A RY “With a Reyka bloody Mary, there’s not the question of ‘Is there vodka in this?’ Because we don’t strip it away, that character is in there.” Follow Trevor Schneider at facebook.com/trevorschneider and @cocktailninja on Instagram.

n 2012, Scot Blair went from publican to brewery owner when he opened the Monkey Paw Pub & Brewery in East Village. Part of his mission with that operation was to provide young brewers a chance to make a name for themselves. That ethos is alive after the hiring of Monkey Paw’s third and newest head brewer, Nick Norton, a former behind-the-scenes fermentationist from Stone Brewing’s Liberty Station brewpub. Norton’s predecessor oversaw ale-making at Monkey Paw and sisteroperation South Park Brewing. Blair is now in charge of brewing at the latter and, although busier than ever, he took some time to tell us all about it. >>>

Matcha NORTH PARK’S TRENDY NEW TEA RETREAT IS THE TALK OF THE TOWN

APRIL 2017 | @PACIFICSD

W

ith an exquisite pink interior balanced by fluorescent green beverages, Holy Matcha is among the hottest new spots to open in San Diego this year. Not bad, considering the café’s drink menu consists of just four items. As the city’s only café specializing in matcha (an ancient beverage made from powdered tea leaves), Holy Matcha opened in March, serving both traditional and contemporary versions of the antioxidant-rich drink Asian cultures have enjoyed for ages. And customers have been lining up to imbibe. “Since this is San Diego’s first

matcha café, I wanted to offer some variation, because there are so many different grades to matcha,” says owner Geraldine Ridaura. “But, at the same time, I didn’t want to complicate it too much.” For starters, there’s the ceremonial version of the tea, served hot in a traditional bowl called a chawan. And then there’s the premium-grade matcha, which retains more of an umami (savory) flavor. “The ceremonial matcha has a smoother taste and almost sweet notes to it at the end,” Ridaura says, “where the premium is a bit more earthy and has some bitter notes to it.” In the brief time Holy Matcha’s been open, however, the café’s other two drinks seem to have been more popular among locals. The much-loved matcha latte can be prepared hot or cold, and with either almond milk or

coconut milk. The shop’s unique citrus-forward beverage has also been a smashing success. “The matcha lemonade is very refreshing,” says Ridaura. “We hand-squeeze fresh lemons every day, add some mint leaves, then add a little bit of soda water to give it a kick. It’s perfect for a warm, sunny day.” New to the world of matcha? Don’t fret. The cafe’s matcharistas are more than happy to help first-time customers place their orders. And all of Holy Matcha’s drinks are prepared in a Japanese bowl by hand. “Everything is made to order, prepared and served traditionally and unsweetened,” says Ridaura. “Even if you get a lemonade, we will ground the powder, add the lemon water, whisk it by hand, then serve it in a cup.” Matcha’s growing popularity in recent years means the

drink now appears on menus at more local coffee shops and restaurants. But Ridaura assures San Diegans her green powder is the best around. “This isn’t Starbucks’ matcha,” she says. “All of our matcha is 100 percent natural and shadegrown in Japan, so it lacks the sun’s light and overproduces chlorophyll. That’s why it’s so rich in antioxidants and amino acids.” Still need another reason to try matcha? “The benefits are endless,” Ridaura says. “Matcha fights inflammation and calms the brain, yet still keeps you focused. It also relieves stress (and) aids in weight-loss.” Coffee may turn green with envy. HOLY MATCHA 3118 University Ave., North Park holymatchasd.com, @holymatcha

BUDTENDER

L

ike many of the best things in life, Cassandra Pearson’s career as a “budtender” began on Craigslist. In 2012, after spending a few years employed at restaurants around San Diego, the native Minnesotan found herself looking for a new line of work. That’s when she stumbled upon a job posting for M Delivers, a medical marijuana delivery service. “I responded to the ad,” she says, “and it kind of just went from there.” Five years later, Pearson’s still with the

company. As one of M Delivers’ nearly two dozen drivers, she helps downtown, Uptown and Point Loma cannabis patients pack their pipes and enjoy their edibles. In honor of 4/20, here’s insight into what drives this driver. PACIFIC: What do you love most about your job? CASSANDRA PEARSON: Just getting the patients what they need to feel comfortable and medicate. It’s very demanding and it’s hard being on the road all day, but when you get to help this little old lady who’s going through chemo and you’re providing her something that actually makes her feel better, it’s pretty rewarding.

Given the stigma that still surrounds marijuana, does your family support your chosen profession? Yes, actually. My parents are very supportive. I was very secretive about it in the beginning but I realized, if I can’t be open and positive about this, how is anybody else ever going to either? So now I tell everybody. What distinguishes M Delivers from other delivery companies? Customer service and professionalism. With a lot of delivery services out there, you have some kid show up in a tie-dyed T-shirt hours late. When you order through us, you’re going to

D, DELIVERED have somebody professional, on time and welleducated about the products. What’s your preferred method of consuming cannabis? Obviously, when I’m on the road and driving to see patients, I’m not medicating. But I do use a high-CBD, low-THC cartridge from Mighty Pen. It’s non-psychoactive, which gives you an overall calming effect without actually being high. It keeps my stress level down; I smoke mostly for anxiety. It does just what I need without all the other nasty side effects of being too high and stoney.

All-time favorite strain? Jack Herrer. I love the smell and the effect. It’s a really great sativa and it’s my Saturday go-to when cleaning the house. Typically, if I’m smoking flower, I’m definitely rolling a joint. It’s kind of like a whole ritual of sitting down, grinding up the weed and rolling it up. It’s the end-of-the-day reward to take the day away. Some people sit down and have a glass of wine, and I feel like I definitely am one to more turn to that whole ritual of the joint. If you were a strain of marijuana, what would your name be? Wild Child.

If you could smoke up with anyone, who would it be? The group of kids from That ’70s Show, in a basement smoke session. I’ve always loved their random banter. Need to re-up? M Delivers offers home-delivery across San Diego County and mail order service throughout California. Dope!

Where are you from? Born and raised in Sunny San Diego. What’s awesome about the bar you work at? I love the people I get to work with and work for. However, the whiskey list, with almost 300 whiskies, is a nice benefit to working here as well. With a couple of different bars inside Urge Gastropub & Whiskey Bank, there is something for everyone. What cocktail are you making today? This is Treating Connie, named for my mom, who is a loyal Jack Daniels drinker and has been since before I was born. She keeps a bottle of Gentleman Jack in her liquor cabinet for when she wants to treat herself. This cocktail combines Gentleman Jack with blackberry liqueur, fresh-squeezed lemon juice, simple syrup, and a house-made mixed berry marinade. I garnish it with more berries and some fresh mint to brighten it up. Why does Gentleman Jack work well for this cocktail? The soft citrus notes marry well with the berries, and the oak and vanilla round the cocktail out as a whole. What makes this a great cocktail for women who are just getting into whiskey?

Gentleman Jack is beautifully smooth and slightly sweet, which lends to an easy sipping experience. Pairing it with the berries sweetens it up a little more and makes it approachable for even the most novice of whiskey drinkers. What makes this a great cocktail for women who are already experienced whiskey drinkers? The Gentleman Jack is the star in the cocktail. The ingredients are there to enhance the flavors, not to cover them up. What is your first experience with whiskey? My most memorable experience involves a bottle of whiskey, my beautiful friend Jill, a stoop and a Thanksgiving dinner we walked out on because everyone was annoying us. We talked for hours, passed the bottle back and forth and became some of the best friends that night. What advice would you give to women wanting to get into drinking whiskey? Start with something a little sweeter like a “wheated” whiskey, a sweeter bourbon or a Tennessee sipping whiskey. If you ever want to try, come see me at any one of our three locations: Urge Gastropub & Whiskey Bank, 101 Proof or Urge Gastropub & Common house. I’m here for you.

Where are you from? Locally planted and grown in San Diego. What’s awesome about the bar you work at? Dumpling Inn Shanghai Saloon is a unique gem that brings together western flair with oldworld Shanghai. We don’t just make great cocktails, but also serve amazing Chinese food. With 30 beers on tap and wideselection of whiskies, it’s unique for a Chinese restaurant. What cocktail are you making today? I am making something I call Lady of the House; it features Gentleman Jack, lemon juice, lavender syrup and honey. I wanted to make something that was elegant and sophisticated – but not overly complex – that someone would be able to replicate it at home. Why does Gentleman Jack work well for this cocktail? Gentleman Jack gives this cocktail its kick. Its warm, sweet nature helps to pull together all the different layers and flavors. What makes this a great cocktail for women who are just getting into whiskey? It has just enough of whiskey that you know your sipping on something with some oomph, but not so much that you don’t want to take a second sip. It’s romantic and fun, with no strings attached. What makes this a great cocktail for women who are already experienced whiskey drinkers?

Lady of the House highlights how versatile Gentleman Jack can be. In this particular cocktail, it shows how it can help to highlight flavors while adding depth and warmth. Whiskey doesn’t always have to be associated with cigars and dark mahogany walls. It can be light, refreshing and sipped outside in the San Diego sun. What is your first experience with whiskey? My first experience with whiskey was with Mr. Jack Daniels. I had never had alcohol before and ended up buying a bottle of Jack Daniels. I have very fond memories of my first tryst with whiskey and Jack. What advice would you give women wanting to get into drinking whiskey? I highly suggest getting some friends together and tasting a few side-by-side. You don’t have to take shots of it, just enough to coat your pallet to savor the flavors. Sharing the experience with someone makes it less intimidating and more fun. Or join us for one of our Woman and Whiskey events at Shanghai Saloon. ADVERTISEMENT SPONSORED BY JACK DANIELS.

mainstay on America’s Finest music scene, DJ/ producer Schoeny (aka Justin) spins at Analog, Backyard Kitchen & Tap, Bootlegger, Florent, Oxford Social Club and Vin de Syrah, among other popular local venues. In March, he also had show dates scheduled for New York, Chicago and Tucson. This evening, however, Justin’s got a big date – a blind one – with Andrea, a yogi from the Midwest. The two met half an hour ago in the Epic Limo that’s about to drop them off at downtown’s new Lionfish for dinner. Before they arrive, let’s review the pre-date interviews. PACIFIC: Where are you from and where do you live now? ANDREA: I’m from a small, one-stoplight town in Indiana. I currently live in Little Italy, San Diego. JUSTIN: I’m from Northern California, Hayward to be exact, and I’m currently living in San Diego.

*Yep, video. And this one’s really good. Watch it at pacificsandiego.com.

What do you do for a living? ANDREA: I sell tea on Instagram. JUSTIN: Music producer, DJ, Instagram model and meme god. Check me out on Instagram @schoenypony. Why are you going on a blind date in PACIFIC magazine? ANDREA: Because I didn’t get accepted on “The Bachelor.” JUSTIN: Because I’m single and 33 – the f*** you think? Ha! Who am I? What am I doing with my life? But seriously, let’s make some babies. I’m joking. Chill out. What do you do for fun? ANDREA: I spend most of my time being active, whether it’s outdoors hiking or dancing on the tables at Parq. JUSTIN: Play golf, travel, stalk my exes on Facebook – normal-guy stuff. What are you best at? ANDREA: Taking tequila shots with no hands. JUSTIN: Gettin’ liiiiiit. What do you suck at? ANDREA: Adulting.

JUSTIN: Being attentive. What are you looking for in a date, physically and/or otherwise? ANDREA: Abs – a guy who is fit and active is sexy. Also, someone who makes me laugh. If you know how to change a tire, that’s pretty cool, too. JUSTIN: I’m looking for someone that’s well put together and confident. A woman that is comfortable in her own skin – you’d be amazed how hard that is to find in San Diego. Shout out to my exes. Physically, she’s got to be fit, or at least be into herself enough to take pride in what she looks like. Basically, I want to date Lady Gaga. >>>

Describe your special brand of sex appeal in five words or less. ANDREA: A ball of sloppy seduction. JUSTIN: Jeff Goldblum meets Nic Cage. What do you like least about yourself? ANDREA: My ability to lose everything. Like, thankfully my head is attached. JUSTIN: Being right all the time. It gets really annoying and makes it hard to be humble. I’m really, really, really humble. Rate yourself on a scale from one to ten for looks. ANDREA: Sixty-nine. JUSTIN: Pi. Rate yourself on a scale from one to ten for personality. ANDREA: Ninety-six. JUSTIN: A solid 3.5. That’s a nine on the f***-boy scale, by the way. What’s your biggest fear? ANDREA: My parents seeing my phone photo

album. JUSTIN: Chris Hansen walking into my kitchen. What traits could your date exhibit that would be complete deal-breakers? ANDREA: Being boring or a virgin. I don’t know which is worse. JUSTIN: Selling Fit Tea on Instagram is a deal-breaker. Will the night end with a kiss, something more or something less? ANDREA: I don’t kiss and tell, but I cleaned my sheets … in case. JUSTIN: Not sure. I don’t usually kiss on the first date, but this is PACIFIC mag, so maybe I gotta step out my comfort zone. Or take my shirt off – either, or. What’s the most important thing in the world? ANDREA: Love. And money, because money can buy yoga pants. JUSTIN: Send nudes.

When their limo pulls up to the new Pendry San Diego hotel, Andrea and Justin step out onto Fifth Avenue and head inside Lionfish to enjoy a seafood-forward presentation by Chef Jose “JoJo” Ruiz. Oysters, a Big-Eye Tuna Pizza and MapleSriracha Pork Belly BLTs arrive at their table as they talk over cocktails for an hour or so. >>>

y the time they’re ready to leave the restaurant, the daters appear to be on-track to making sweet music together. They jump back into the limo and head up the street to House of Blues to see a concert. Before heading inside, they’re split for mid-date debriefings. PACIFIC: How’s it going so far? ANDREA: Going great. I have had a fantastic time. He has been super enthusiastic, fun and witty – very witty – which is exactly what I wanted. JUSTIN: It’s going spectacularly. What were you first impressions? ANDREA: My first impression when he opened the door was actually very relieved, because he was tattooed. I like that, like a lot. That means he is very open to everything. I have a few tattoos, too, so I thought, “We are going to have a great time together.” JUSTIN: She’s cute. She’s wearing a really nice dress. Is this the type of person you’d normally date? ANDREA: Absolutely.

108

APRIL 2017 | @PACIFICSD

JUSTIN: No. I don’t know what my type is, just a little different, I guess? But, I mean, she’s bangin’. I don’t know, just not really my style, but at the same time, I can see myself being with her. What do you think of the way your date is dressed? ANDREA: I like the way that he is dressed. I think he could have dolled it up a little bit more for a date, however, casual is always good. JUSTIN: Really nice f***in’ dress. How was your experience at Lionfish? ANDREA: It was amazing. The food was so fantastic, I don’t know if there is any place in San Diego that can top it. The appetizers were amazing. JUSTIN: Everything was great. We had a lot of appetizers. I actually didn’t know it was more seafood, but I love seafood, and it was great. What did you eat/drink/do there? ANDREA: We had this tuna appetizer pizza. The lobster was amazing; the oysters were fantastic. The drinks – oh, my gosh – beyond amazing. I had a few vodka cucumber drinks that were great. JUSTIN: We had some oysters – not sure what

kind; they were exotic oysters. The drinks were really good; I was really impressed by the drinks. Everything else was good. I think we had sea bass and some pork; both were spectacular dishes. What’s the most attractive thing your date has done so far? ANDREA: I think feeding me my food at one point was attractive. We had a fun time feeding each other and playing around with it and the sushi and the chopsticks. JUSTIN: Shove some seafood down my throat – she fed me. >>>

l ov E B L I N D DAT E

What’s the least attractive thing? ANDREA: That he was saying he doesn’t drink; that’s a bummer – not necessarily unattractive, but bummed me out. Something else unattractive is he doesn’t really say “please” and “thank you.” He could use a little more pleases and thank-yous. JUSTIN: She grabbed my dick while we were walking to the bathroom, which could be on either end of the spectrum – it could be on the “that was really hot” or it could be “least attractive.” I’ll leave that up to the audience that’s reading.

Rate your date on a scale from one to 10 for looks. ANDREA: Nine. JUSTIN: Eight, solid eight. And for personality? ANDREA: 9.5. JUSTIN: Solid eight. Do you want to kiss your date right now? ANDREA: I think it is questionable. I could possibly kiss him. JUSTIN: I do. I don’t think I am going to have to make the move. I feel like she is going to do it.

Does your date want to kiss you? ANDREA: I think he is thinking about it. JUSTIN: Oh, 100 percent. Now if I’m going to kiss her back, I’m not sure. I might just turn the cheek and let her know what time it is, keep it interesting. TBD. Actually we already kissed in the bathroom. We told you we were leaving the table to go make-out. How and when will the date end? ANDREA: I think it will end with either a good-night kiss or him in my bed – because I am not ending up in his bed, that’s for sure. JUSTIN: Not sure. It’s kinda whatever is going to happen is going to happen, but it’s looking pretty promising for me. I don’t know about her. >>>

RAPPING IT UP

A LIVE SHOW AND A SURPRISE ENDING… OR IS IT?

hen Andrea and Justin arrive at House of Blues after the mid-date break, they grab a table on the balcony. Then, as rapper Shwayze takes the stage, the crowd goes wild – and the magazine crew finally leaves the couple alone to enjoy the rest of their evening away from the camera. The next day, we call to see what we missed.

W

JUSTIN: Great. I’ve always loved that venue.

PACIFIC: How was your experience at House of Blues? ANDREA: House of Blues was a great vibe. It was my first time there, so I was really excited. The music was fantastic. I’m a huge Shwayze fan.

When did you get home? ANDREA: At some point between 2 a.m. and sunrise. JUSTIN: Late

112

APRIL 2017 | @PACIFICSD

Where did you go after the concert? ANDREA: After leaving House of Blues, we went to the opening of the Oxford Social Club in the new Pendry. JUSTIN: We went to the grand opening of Oxford Social Club, and it was amazing.

Was there a kiss or romantic exchange?

ANDREA: My memory is a little hazy, but I believe there was a kiss or make-out session in the limo for the camera. Oh, wow – I can only imagine how sloppy it was. Sorry, Justin. JUSTIN: Yeah, she forced a kiss on me at the House of Blues. I felt like I was kissing my cousin. Not into it. How and when did the date end? ANDREA: It ended as soon as we arrived at the Oxford Social Club. We split after I found my friends and forgot his name while introducing him. JUSTIN: It ended at Oxford. I ditched her five minutes after we arrived. >>>

Fill in the blanks: I wish my date had a bigger “blank” and a smaller “blank.” ANDREA: Bigger feet and a smaller neck tattoo. JUSTIN: I wish my date had a bigger tolerance for alcohol and a smaller appetite for drinks.

What was the worst part of the date? ANDREA: My date being completely sober; me drinking double. The hangover sucked. JUSTIN: She tried to feed me dessert and jammed the f***in’ fork into my teeth.

What’s the funniest thing that happened during the date? ANDREA: I forgot his name, maybe a few times. I thought it was funny. I don’t think he did. JUSTIN: She grabbed my crotch while I was walking to the bathroom.

Will there be a second date? ANDREA: No. He was really cool, don’t get me wrong, but I don’t do DJs. They always one-up me with the AUX cord. JUSTIN: Are you serious? I could barely make it through the first one. She seems like a rad chick, just not my type.

What was the best part of the date? ANDREA: It was really fun trying out the new restaurant Lionfish. The food was amazing, and I had a guy hand-feeding me oysters. JUSTIN: Oxford Social Club, because that’s where I ditched her, and I love that place. Their slogan is “Be sophisticated, or not.” Obviously, I chose the latter.

What’s one thing your date should know before going on another date? ANDREA: Warn her you don’t drink, so that, when you show up, she can already be drunk. JUSTIN: Don’t get so drunk. Or, if you’re going to get drunk, be nice and don’t yell at the limo driver.

What could have made this date better? ANDREA: Roofies. JUSTIN: Drugs. Anything else you’d like to add? ANDREA: Hey, guys, I’m still single. Hit me on the DM. JUSTIN: For more updates on my incredible single life, follow me on Instagram @schoenypony. AFTERMATCH: Whoa. This music issue blind date sure had more face-biting, d***-grabbing and cousin-kissing than previous episodes, huh? Luckily, the PACIFIC crew brought a video camera (watch a PG-13 version at pacificsandiego.com). Andrea and Justin may not have found love in each other, but these two hard-rockin’ singles are sure to be back in the swing soon enough – probably before the next song comes on. And the beat goes on…
